कस्य वा त्वं कुतो वा त्वं किं वा तात चिकीर्षसि। न हि मे दृष्टपूर्वस्त्वं तत्त्वं ब्रूहि नरर्षभ ॥०४-९-३॥

(Of whom or you, from where or you, what or dear sir, do you wish to do? Not certainly to me seen before you. The truth tell, O best of men.)
Whose are you, or from where are you, or what do you intend to do, dear sir? You have certainly not been seen by me before. Tell the truth, O best of men. (04-9-3)
स प्राप्य राजानममित्रतापन; स्ततोऽब्रवीन्मेघमहौघनिःस्वनः। वैश्योऽस्मि नाम्नाहमरिष्टनेमि; र्गोसङ्ख्य आसं कुरुपुङ्गवानाम् ॥०४-९-४॥
sa prāpya rājānam amitra-tāpanaḥ; tataḥ abravīt megha-mahā-ughaniḥsvanaḥ। vaiśyaḥ asmi nāmnā aham ariṣṭanemiḥ; go-saṅkhye āsaṃ kuru-puṅgavānām॥04-9-4॥

(He, having approached the king, the afflicter of foes, then spoke with a voice like a vast mass of clouds: "(I am) a Vaiśya, I am by name Ariṣṭanemi. In number of cows, I was among the foremost Kurus." (04-9-4))
Having approached the king, the tormentor of enemies, he spoke with a voice like a great cloud-mass: "I am a Vaiśya named Ariṣṭanemi. In the number of cows, I was among the chief of the Kurus." (04-9-4)
वस्तुं त्वयीच्छामि विशां वरिष्ठ; तान्राजसिंहान्न हि वेद्मि पार्थान्। न शक्यते जीवितुमन्यकर्मणा; न च त्वदन्यो मम रोचते नृपः ॥०४-९-५॥
vastuṁ tvayīcchāmi viśāṁ variṣṭha; tānrājasiṁhān na hi vedmi pārthān. na śakyate jīvitum anyakarmaṇā; na ca tvadanyo mama rocate nṛpaḥ ॥04-9-5॥
[वस्तुं (vastuṁ) - to dwell; त्वयि (tvayi) - with you; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; विशां (viśāṁ) - of people; वरिष्ठ (variṣṭha) - best; तान् (tān) - those; राजसिंहान् (rājasiṁhān) - lion-kings; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; पार्थान् (pārthān) - sons of Pritha; न (na) - not; शक्यते (śakyate) - can be possible; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; अन्यकर्मणा (anyakarmaṇā) - by other action; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; त्वत् (tvad) - than you; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; मम (mama) - to me; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king;]
(To dwell with you I desire, O best of the people; those lion-kings, indeed, I do not know, the sons of Pritha. It is not possible to live by other action; nor does any other king besides you please me.)
O best among men! I wish to live with you; I truly do not know those lion-hearted kings, the sons of Pritha. It is not possible for me to live through any other means, nor does any other king but you appeal to me. (04-9-5)

त्वं ब्राह्मणो यदि वा क्षत्रियोऽसि; समुद्रनेमीश्वररूपवानसि। आचक्ष्व मे तत्त्वममित्रकर्शन; न वैश्यकर्म त्वयि विद्यते समम् ॥०४-९-६॥
tvaṃ brāhmaṇo yadi vā kṣatriyo'si; samudranemīśvararūpavān asi. ācakṣva me tattvam amitrakarśana; na vaiśyakarma tvayi vidyate samam ॥04-9-6॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a brāhmaṇa; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; असि (asi) - you are; समुद्रनेमि (samudranemi) - O ocean-rimmed (one with a wheel as broad as the ocean); ईश्वररूपवान् (īśvararūpavān) - possessing the form of a lord; असि (asi) - you are; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; मे (me) - to me; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - the truth; अमित्रकर्शन (amitrakarśana) - chastiser of foes; न (na) - not; वैश्यकर्म (vaiśyakarma) - vaiśya's duty; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; समम् (samam) - at all;]
(You are a brāhmaṇa, if or a kṣatriya you are; O ocean-rimmed, lordly-formed one you are. Tell to me the truth, O chastiser of foes; Not vaiśya's duty in you is found at all.)
You are either a brāhmaṇa or a kṣatriya; you possess the form of a lord, O ocean-chakraed one. Tell me the truth, O chastiser of enemies; the function of a vaiśya is not seen in you at all. (04-9-6)
कस्यासि राज्ञो विषयादिहागतः; किं चापि शिल्पं तव विद्यते कृतम्। कथं त्वमस्मासु निवत्स्यसे सदा; वदस्व किं चापि तवेह वेतनम् ॥०४-९-७॥
kasyāsi rājño viṣayād ihāgataḥ; kiṁ cāpi śilpaṁ tava vidyate kṛtam। kathaṁ tvam asmāsu nivatsyase sadā; vadasva kiṁ cāpi taveha vetanam ॥04-9-7॥

(Whose king’s realm are you from here come? What and also craft your exists done? How you among us will dwell always? Speak what and also your here wage.)
From which king's realm have you come here? What craft or skill do you also possess that is accomplished? How will you always reside among us? Speak also, what shall your wage here be? (04-9-7)

pañcānāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ jyeṣṭho rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ. tasya aṣṭaśata-sāhasrā gavāṃ vargāḥ śataṃ śatāḥ ॥04-9-8॥
[पञ्चानां (pañcānāṃ) - of the five; पाण्डुपुत्राणां (pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; तस्य (tasya) - his; अष्टशतसाहस्रा (aṣṭaśata-sāhasrā) - eight hundred thousand; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; वर्गाः (vargāḥ) - groups; शतं (śataṃ) - one hundred; शताः (śatāḥ) - hundreds;]
(Of the five sons of Pāṇḍu, the eldest king is Yudhiṣṭhira. For him, there are eight hundred thousand groups of cows, a hundred hundreds.)
Of the five sons of Pāṇḍu, the eldest king is Yudhiṣṭhira. He had groups of cows numbering eight hundred thousand, in hundreds of hundreds. (04-9-8)
अपरे दशसाहस्रा द्विस्तावन्तस्तथापरे। तेषां गोसङ्ख्य आसं वै तन्तिपालेति मां विदुः ॥०४-९-९॥
apare daśasāhasrā dvistāvantastathāpare। teṣāṃ gosaṅkhyā āsaṃ vai tantipāleti māṃ viduḥ ॥04-9-9॥
[अपरे (apare) - others; दशसाहस्रा (daśasāhasrā) - ten thousand; द्विस्तावन्तः (dvistāvantaḥ) - twice as many; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अपरे (apare) - others; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; गोसङ्ख्या (gosaṅkhyā) - the count of cows; आसं (āsaṃ) - I was; वै (vai) - indeed; तन्तिपाल (tantipāla) - Tantipāla; इति (iti) - thus; माम् (mām) - me; विदुः (viduḥ) - (they) knew;]
(Others (were) ten thousand, twice as many likewise (were) others. Of them, of the count of cows, I was indeed. Thus (as) Tantipāla, me, they knew.)
There were other groups of ten thousand each, and likewise yet others of twice that number. Among them, as a cowherd, I truly was known as Tantipāla.
भूतं भव्यं भविष्यच्च यच्च सङ्ख्यागतं क्वचित्। न मेऽस्त्यविदितं किञ्चित्समन्ताद्दशयोजनम् ॥०४-९-१०॥
bhūtaṃ bhavyaṃ bhaviṣyacca yacca saṅkhyāgataṃ kvacit। na me'astyaviditaṃ kiñcitsamantāddaśayojanam ॥04-9-10॥
[भूतम् (bhūtam) - past; भव्यम् (bhavyam) - present; भविष्य च (bhaviṣya ca) - and future; यत् च (yat ca) - and whatever; सङ्ख्यागतम् (saṅkhyāgatam) - included in number; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; अस्ति (asti) - is; अविदितम् (aviditam) - unknown; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; समन्तात् (samantāt) - from all sides; दश (daśa) - ten; योजनम् (yojanam) - yojanas;]
(Past, present, and also future, and whatever is included in number anywhere; not to me is unknown anything from all sides, ten yojanas.)
Nothing, past, present, or future, or whatever is present in number anywhere within a radius of ten yojanas from all sides, is unknown to me. (04-9-10)
गुणाः सुविदिता ह्यासन्मम तस्य महात्मनः। आसीच्च स मया तुष्टः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-९-११॥
guṇāḥ suviditā hyāsan mama tasya mahātmanaḥ। āsīc ca sa mayā tuṣṭaḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥04-9-11॥
[गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; सुविदिता (suviditāḥ) - well-known; हि (hi) - indeed; आसन् (āsan) - were; मम (mama) - to me; तस्य (tasya) - of him; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; च (ca) - and; स (saḥ) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - Kuru-king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(qualities well-known indeed were to me of him, of the great-souled. Was and he by me pleased, Kuru-king Yudhiṣṭhira.)
The qualities of that great-souled one were indeed well-known to me, and King Yudhiṣṭhira of the Kurus was pleased with me. (04-9-11)
क्षिप्रं हि गावो बहुला भवन्ति; न तासु रोगो भवतीह कश्चित्। तैस्तैरुपायैर्विदितं मयैत; देतानि शिल्पानि मयि स्थितानि ॥०४-९-१२॥
kṣipraṃ hi gāvo bahulā bhavanti; na tāsu rogo bhavatīha kaścit. taistairupāyair viditaṃ mayaita; detāni śilpāni mayi sthitāni ॥04-9-12॥
[क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; हि (hi) - indeed; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; बहुलाः (bahulāḥ) - numerous; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; न (na) - not; तासु (tāsu) - in them; रोगः (rogaḥ) - disease; भवति (bhavati) - arises; इह (iha) - here; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; तैः तैः उपायैः (taiḥ taiḥ upāyaiḥ) - by those various means; विदितं (viditam) - known; मया (mayā) - by me; एत (etat) - these; शिल्पानि (śilpāni) - skills; मयि (mayi) - in me; स्थितानि (sthitāni) - are existing;]
(Quickly indeed cows numerous become; not in them disease arises here any. By those various means known by me these skills in me are existing.)
Cows quickly become numerous, indeed; there is no disease among them here. By various methods, these skills become known by me and reside within me. (04-9-12)
वृषभांश्चापि जानामि राजन्पूजितलक्षणान्। येषां मूत्रमुपाघ्राय अपि वन्ध्या प्रसूयते ॥०४-९-१३॥
vṛṣabhāṁś cāpi jānāmi rājan pūjitalakṣaṇān। yeṣāṁ mūtram upāghrāya api vandhyā prasūyate॥04-9-13॥
[वृषभान् (vṛṣabhān) - bulls; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पूजितलक्षणान् (pūjitalakṣaṇān) - having the signs of being honored; येषाम् (yeṣām) - whose; मूत्रम् (mūtram) - urine; उपाघ्राय (upāghrāya) - having smelled; अपि (api) - even; वन्ध्या (vandhyā) - barren (woman); प्रसूयते (prasūyate) - becomes capable of giving birth;]
(Bulls and also I know, O king, having the signs of being honored, whose urine having smelled even a barren (woman) becomes capable of giving birth.)
O king, I also know the bulls possessing auspicious marks of honor, by smelling the urine of whom even a barren woman becomes capable of bearing offspring. (04-9-13)

śataṃ sahasrāṇi samāhitāni; varṇasya varṇasya viniścitā guṇaiḥ। paśūn sapālān bhavate dadāmy ahaṃ; tvad āśrayā me paśavo bhavantv iha ॥04-9-14॥
[शतं (śataṃ) - one hundred; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; समाहितानि (samāhitāni) - collected; वर्णस्य (varṇasya) - of the class; वर्णस्य (varṇasya) - of the class; विनिश्चिता (viniścitā) - ascertained; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by qualities; पशून् (paśūn) - cattle; सपालान् (sapālān) - with keepers; भवते (bhavate) - to you; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; त्वदाश्रया (tvad āśrayā) - depending on you; मे (me) - my; पशवः (paśavaḥ) - cattle; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - may become; इह (iha) - here; ॥०४-९-१४॥ (॥04-9-14॥) - ;]
(One hundred thousands collected; of the class of the class ascertained by qualities. Cattle with keepers to you I give I. Depending on you my cattle may become here (04-9-14))
I give you one hundred thousand well-selected cattle of each class, all distinguished by their qualities, together with herdsmen. May my cattle here become dependent upon you. (04-9-14)

tathā sa rājño'vidito viśāṃ pate; uvāsa tatraiva sukhaṃ nareśvaraḥ. na ca enam anye'pi viduḥ kathaṃcana; prādāc ca tasmai bharaṇaṃ yathepsitam ॥04-9-15॥
