athāparo'dṛśyata rūpasampadā; strīṇāmalaṅkāra-dharo bṛhat-pumān। prākāra-vapre pratimucya kuṇḍale; dīrghe ca kambū parihāṭake śubhe ॥04-10-1॥

(Then another, endowed with beauty, bearing the ornaments of women, a great man, on the rampart embankment, having fastened earrings, with a long neck and auspicious ornament.)
Then another person appeared, endowed with beauty, bearing women's ornaments, a large man, on the rampart embankment, having adorned himself with earrings and an auspicious ornament on his long neck. (4-10-1)
बहूंश्च दीर्घांश्च विकीर्य मूर्धजा; न्महाभुजो वारणमत्तविक्रमः। गतेन भूमिमभिकम्पयंस्तदा; विराटमासाद्य सभासमीपतः ॥०४-१०-२॥
bahūṁś ca dīrghāṁś ca vikīrya mūrdhajāḥ; mahābhujo vāraṇamatta-vikramaḥ. gatena bhūmim abhikampayaṁs tadā; virāṭam āsādya sabhā-samīpataḥ ॥04-10-2॥
[बहूंश्च (bahūṁś ca) - arms and; दीर्घांश्च (dīrghāṁś ca) - long and; विकीर्य (vikīrya) - having spread; मूर्धजा (mūrdhajāḥ) - hair (from the head); महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - having mighty arms; वारणमत्तविक्रमः (vāraṇa-matta-vikramaḥ) - with the gait/glory of an intoxicated elephant; गतेन (gatena) - moving (with, with speed or step); भूमिम् (bhūmim) - the earth; अभिकम्पयन् (abhikampayan) - causing to quake; तदा (tadā) - then; विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virāṭa; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; सभासमीपतः (sabhā-samīpataḥ) - from near the assembly;]
(Arms and long (arms) and (having) spread hair (from the head), (he,) having mighty arms, of the gait of an intoxicated elephant, then moving, causing the earth to quake, having approached Virāṭa from near the assembly.)
He, with long arms and hair strewn about, possessing mighty arms and the stride of an intoxicated elephant, moved forward, making the earth quake as he went, and then, approaching Virāṭa near the assembly. (04-10-2)
तं प्रेक्ष्य राजोपगतं सभातले; सत्रप्रतिच्छन्नमरिप्रमाथिनम्। विराजमानं परमेण वर्चसा; सुतं महेन्द्रस्य गजेन्द्रविक्रमम् ॥०४-१०-३॥
taṁ prekṣya rājopagataṁ sabhā-tale; satra-praticchannam ari-pramāthinam. virājamānaṁ parameṇa varcasā; sutaṁ mahendrasya gajendra-vikramam ॥04-10-3॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; राजोपगतं (rājopagataṁ) - approached by the king; सभातले (sabhā-tale) - on the hall-floor; सत्रप्रतिच्छन्नम् (satra-praticchannam) - veiled by the sacrificial session; अरिप्रमाथिनम् (ari-pramāthinam) - crusher of enemies; विराजमानं (virājamānam) - shining; परमेण (parameṇa) - by supreme; वर्चसा (varcasā) - splendor; सुतं (sutaṁ) - son; महेन्द्रस्य (mahendrasya) - of Mahendra; गजेन्द्रविक्रमम् (gajendra-vikramam) - with the prowess of the lord of elephants;]
(Him having seen, approached by the king on the hall floor, veiled by the sacrificial session, crusher of enemies, shining by supreme splendor, son of Mahendra, with the prowess of the lord of elephants.)
Seeing him, who had approached the king on the hall floor, veiled by the sacrificial session, the crusher of enemies, shining with supreme splendor, the son of Mahendra, with the might of the lord of elephants. (04-10-3)
सर्वानपृच्छच्च समीपचारिणः; कुतोऽयमायाति न मे पुरा श्रुतः। न चैनमूचुर्विदितं तदा नराः; सविस्मितं वाक्यमिदं नृपोऽब्रवीत् ॥०४-१०-४॥
sarvān apṛcchac ca samīpacāriṇaḥ; kuto'ayam āyāti na me purā śrutaḥ. na ca enam ūcur viditaṃ tadā narāḥ; savismitaṃ vākyam idaṃ nṛpo'bravīt ॥04-10-4॥
[सर्वानपृच्छच्च (sarvān apṛcchac ca) - all (persons) and he inquired; समीपचारिणः (samīpacāriṇaḥ) - those nearby; कुतोऽयमायाति (kuto'ayam āyāti) - from where this (person) comes; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; पुरा (purā) - before; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard (of); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; विदितम् (viditam) - known; तदा (tadā) - then; नराः (narāḥ) - men; सविस्मितम् (savismitam) - with amazement; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; इदम् (idam) - this; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(All (persons) and he inquired those nearby; From where does this (person) come? Not to me before heard (of). And not him said known then men; With amazement, words this, the king said.)
He questioned all those nearby: 'From where has this person come? I have never heard of him before.' And the men did not say that he was known at that time; then, with amazement, the king spoke these words. (04-10-4)
सर्वोपपन्नः पुरुषो मनोरमः; श्यामो युवा वारणयूथपोपमः। विमुच्य कम्बू परिहाटके शुभे; विमुच्य वेणीमपिनह्य कुण्डले ॥०४-१०-५॥
sarvopapannaḥ puruṣo manoramaḥ; śyāmo yuvā vāraṇayūthapopamaḥ। vimucya kambū pari-hāṭake śubhe; vimucya veṇīm api nahya kuṇḍale ॥04-10-5॥
[सर्वोपपन्नः (sarvopapannaḥ) - endowed with all qualities; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; मनोरमः (manoramaḥ) - charming; श्यामः (śyāmaḥ) - dark-complexioned; युवा (yuvā) - young; वारणयूथपोपमः (vāraṇayūthapopamaḥ) - like the leader of a herd of elephants; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; कम्बू (kambū) - neck-ornament; परिहाटके (parihāṭake) - outer garment; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; वेणीम् (veṇīm) - braid; अपि (api) - also; नह्य (nahya) - having tied; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - earrings;]
(Endowed with all qualities, the man is charming; dark, young, like the leader of a herd of elephants. Having released the neck-ornament, in an auspicious outer garment; having released the braid, also having tied the earrings.)
The man, adorned with every quality and of pleasing appearance, is dark-skinned, youthful, and resembles the leader of a herd of elephants. He has removed the necklace, wears an auspicious outer garment, has undone the braid, and is now fastening the earrings. (04-10-5)
शिखी सुकेशः परिधाय चान्यथा; भवस्व धन्वी कवची शरी तथा। आरुह्य यानं परिधावतां भवा; न्सुतैः समो मे भव वा मया समः ॥०४-१०-६॥
śikhī sukeśaḥ paridhāya cānyathā; bhavasva dhanvī kavacī śarī tathā. āruhy a yānaṃ paridhāvatāṃ bhavā; nsutaiḥ samo me bhava vā mayā samaḥ ॥04-10-6॥
[शिखी (śikhī) - crested one; (one with a crest); सुकेशः (sukeśaḥ) - having beautiful hair; (sukeśaḥ – su (good) + keśaḥ (hair)); परिधाय (paridhāya) - having put on; च (ca) - and; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; भवस्व (bhavasva) - become (you be); धन्वी (dhanvī) - armed with a bow; कवची (kavacī) - wearing armor; शरी (śarī) - armed with arrows; तथा (tathā) - so; thus; आaruh्य (āruhy) - having mounted; यानं (yānaṃ) - the vehicle; परिधावतां (paridhāvatām) - of those who run around; (paridhāvatām – paridhāvat (runs around/around) genitive plural); भव (bhava) - be (imperative); सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - with (your) sons; समः (samaḥ) - equal; मे (me) - to me; भव (bhava) - be (imperative); वा (vā) - or; मया (mayā) - with me; by me; समः (samaḥ) - equal;]
(Crested one, having beautiful hair, having put on and otherwise; become armed with a bow, wearing armor, armed with arrows likewise. Having mounted (your) vehicle, among those who run around, be with (your) sons equal to me, or with me equal.)
O crested one with beautiful hair, putting on (armor) in any case, become one armed with a bow, wearing armor and arrows as well. Mount your vehicle and, with your sons, become my equal among those in the race, or else be equal to me. (4-10-6)
वृद्धो ह्यहं वै परिहारकामः; सर्वान्मत्स्यांस्तरसा पालयस्व। नैवंविधाः क्लीबरूपा भवन्ति; कथञ्चनेति प्रतिभाति मे मनः ॥०४-१०-७॥
vṛddho hy ahaṃ vai parihārakāmaḥ; sarvān matsyān tarasā pālayasva. naivaṃvidhāḥ klībarūpā bhavanti; kathaṃcaneti pratibhāti me manaḥ ॥04-10-7॥
[वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; aged; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; वै (vai) - truly; परिहारकामः (parihārakāmaḥ) - desirous of avoidance; wishing to avoid; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; मत्स्यान् (matsyān) - fishes; तरसा (tarasā) - with speed; with energy; पालयस्व (pālayasva) - protect; न (na) - not; एवंविधाः (evaṃvidhāḥ) - such as these; of this kind; क्लीबरूपाः (klībarūpāḥ) - impotent in form; weak in appearance; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; become; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - ever; in any way; इति (iti) - thus; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; seems; मे (me) - to me; my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Old indeed I truly am, desirous of avoidance; all fishes with speed protect. Not such impotent-in-form they become; ever thus it appears to me my mind.)
Truly, I am old and only wish to avoid trouble; protect all the fishes quickly. Such as these are never weak in spirit; so it seems to my mind. (04-10-7)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

गायामि नृत्याम्यथ वादयामि; भद्रोऽस्मि नृत्ते कुशलोऽस्मि गीते। त्वमुत्तरायाः परिदत्स्व मां स्वयं; भवामि देव्या नरदेव नर्तकः ॥०४-१०-८॥
gāyāmi nṛtyāmyatha vādayāmi; bhadro'smi nṛtte kuśalo'smi gīte. tvamuttarāyāḥ paridatsva māṃ svayaṃ; bhavāmi devyā naradeva nartakaḥ ॥04-10-8॥
[गायामि (gāyāmi) - I sing; नृत्यामि (nṛtyāmi) - I dance; अथ (atha) - and; वादयामि (vādayāmi) - I play (an instrument); भद्रः (bhadraḥ) - auspicious (one); अस्मि (asmi) - I am; नृत्ते (nṛtte) - in dance; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; गीते (gīte) - in song; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उत्तरायाः (uttarāyāḥ) - for the answer; परिदत्स्व (paridatsva) - give over; माम् (mām) - me; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself; भवामि (bhavāmi) - I become; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the queen; नरदेव (naradeva) - O king; नर्तकः (nartakaḥ) - dancer;]
(I sing, I dance, and I play (an instrument); I am auspicious, I am skilled in dance, I am skilled in song. You yourself, O king, for the answer, give me over; I become the dancer for the queen.)
I sing, I dance, and I play instruments; I am auspicious, skilled in dance, and skilled in song. For the answer, O king, you yourself give me over; I will become the queen's dancer. (04-10-8)
इदं तु रूपं मम येन किं नु त; त्प्रकीर्तयित्वा भृशशोकवर्धनम्। बृहन्नडां वै नरदेव विद्धि मां; सुतं सुतां वा पितृमातृवर्जिताम् ॥०४-१०-९॥
idaṁ tu rūpaṁ mama yena kiṁ nu ta; tprakīrtayitvā bhṛśaśokavardhanam। bṛhannaḍāṁ vai naradeva viddhi māṁ; sutaṁ sutāṁ vā pitṛmātṛvarjitām॥04-10-9॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; तु (tu) - but; रूपं (rūpam) - form; मम (mama) - my; येन् (yena) - by which; किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; त (ta) - you; त्प्रकीर्तयित्वा (tprakīrtayitvā) - having declared that; भृशशोकवर्धनम् (bhṛśaśokavardhanam) - greatly-increasing sorrow; बृहन्नडां (bṛhannaḍām) - Bṛhannadā; वै (vai) - indeed; नरदेव (naradeva) - O king; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मां (māṁ) - me; सुतं (sutaṁ) - son; सुतां (sutāṁ) - daughter; वा (vā) - or; पितृमातृवर्जिताम् (pitṛmātṛvarjitām) - deprived of father and mother;]
(But this form of mine, by which, what indeed (are you)? Having declared that, greatly-increasing sorrow. Bṛhannadā indeed, O king, know me—son, daughter, or one deprived of father and mother.)
But as for this form of mine—what am I to you by it? By declaring that, great sorrow is only increased. O king, know me as Bṛhannadā, a child—son or daughter—deprived of both father and mother. (04-10-9)

dadāmi te hanta varaṃ bṛhannade; sutāṃ ca me nartaya yāś ca tādṛśīḥ. idaṃ tu te karma samaṃ na me mataṃ; samudranemiṃ pṛthivīṃ tvam arhasi ॥04-10-10॥
[ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; ते (te) - to you; हन्त (hanta) - indeed; वरं (varaṃ) - a boon; बृहन्नडे (bṛhannade) - O Bṛhannada; सुतां (sutāṃ) - daughter; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; नर्तय (nartaya) - make dance; याः (yāḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; तादृशीः (tādṛśīḥ) - such ones; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; कर्म (karma) - act; समं (samaṃ) - equal; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; मतं (mataṃ) - is agreeable; समुद्रनेमिं (samudranemiṃ) - having the ocean as rim; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्हसि (arhasi) - deserve;]
(I give to you indeed a boon, O Bṛhannada; my daughter and make dance those who are such as her. But this act of yours is not agreeable to me as equal; (yet) you deserve the earth with the ocean as its rim.)
I grant you a boon, O Bṛhannada; you may have my daughter and make dance others who are like her. But this act of yours is not agreeable to me as equal; however, you deserve the whole earth encircled by the ocean. (04-10-10)

बृहन्नडां तामभिवीक्ष्य मत्स्यरा; ट्कलासु नृत्ते च तथैव वादिते। अपुंस्त्वमप्यस्य निशम्य च स्थिरं; ततः कुमारीपुरमुत्ससर्ज तम् ॥०४-१०-११॥
bṛhannadāṃ tām abhivīkṣya matsyarāṭ kalāsu nṛtte ca tathaiva vāditē | apuṃstvam apy asya niśamya ca sthiraṃ tataḥ kumārīpuram utsasarja tam ॥04-10-11॥
[बृहन्नडां (bṛhannadām) - the large-naḍā (musical instrument); ताम् (tām) - her; अभिवीक्ष्य (abhivīkṣya) - having observed; मत्स्यराṭ् (matsya-rāṭ) - the king of fish; कलासु (kalāsu) - in the arts; नृत्ते (nṛtte) - in dance; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - similarly; वादिते (vāditē) - in playing (music); अपुंस्त्वम् (apuṃstvam) - impotence; अपि (api) - even; अस्य (asya) - of him; निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; च (ca) - and; स्थिरम् (sthiram) - firmly; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुमारीपुरम् (kumārīpuram) - Kumārīpura (the city of the maiden); उत्ससर्ज (utsasarja) - he dismissed; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Having observed her with the large naḍā, the king of fish in the arts, in dance and likewise in playing (music), also firmly hearing even of his impotence, then he dismissed him from Kumārīpura.)
The king of the fish, having observed her with the great lute in the arts of dance and music, and upon firmly hearing of his impotence, then dismissed him from Kumārīpura. (04-10-11)
स शिक्षयामास च गीतवादितं; सुतां विराटस्य धनञ्जयः प्रभुः। सखीश्च तस्याः परिचारिकास्तथा; प्रियश्च तासां स बभूव पाण्डवः ॥०४-१०-१२॥
sa śikṣayāmāsa ca gīta-vāditaṃ; sutāṃ virāṭasya dhanañjayaḥ prabhuḥ. sakhīś ca tasyāḥ paricārikās tathā; priyaś ca tāsāṃ sa babhūva pāṇḍavaḥ ॥04-10-12॥
[स (sa) - he; शिक्षयामास (śikṣayāmāsa) - taught; च (ca) - and; गीतवादितं (gīta-vāditam) - singing and playing musical instruments; सुतां (sutām) - daughter; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; सखीः (sakhīḥ) - female friends; च (ca) - and; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; परिचारिकाः (paricārikāḥ) - maidservants; तथा (tathā) - also; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; च (ca) - and; तासां (tāsāṃ) - of them; स (sa) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava.;]
(He taught also singing and instrumental music; the daughter of Virāṭa, Dhanañjaya, the lord. And the female friends of her, also the maidservants; and dear to them he became, the Pāṇḍava.)
Dhanañjaya, the lord, taught singing and instrumental music to the daughter of Virāṭa. He also became dear to her female friends and maidservants; thus the Pāṇḍava was beloved by them all. (04-10-12)
तथा स सत्रेण धनञ्जयोऽवस; त्प्रियाणि कुर्वन्सह ताभिरात्मवान्। तथागतं तत्र न जज्ञिरे जना; बहिश्चरा वाप्यथवान्तरेचराः ॥०४-१०-१३॥
tathā sa satreṇa dhanañjayo'vasa; tpriyāṇi kurvansaha tābhirātmavān. tathāgataṃ tatra na jajñire janā; bahiścarā vāpyathavāntarecarāḥ ॥04-10-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; स (sa) - he; सत्रेण (satreṇa) - with the sacrifice; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); अवसत् (avasat) - dwelled; प्रियाणि (priyāṇi) - dear things; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - doing; सह (saha) - with; ताभिः (tābhiḥ) - those (women); आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-possessed; तथा (tathā) - in that way; आगतम् (āgatam) - having come; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - recognized; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; बहिश्चराः (bahiścarāḥ) - moving outside; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; अथवा (athavā) - or else; अन्तरेचराः (antarecarāḥ) - moving inside;]
(Thus he, Dhanañjaya, dwelled with the sacrifice, doing dear things along with those (women), being self-possessed. In that way, those people who move outside or even those who move inside there, did not recognize the arrival (of Arjuna) there.)
Thus, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) stayed there with the sacrifice, doing pleasing things along with those women, self-controlled. No people, whether moving outside or within, recognized his presence there. (04-10-13)
