athāparo'dṛśyata rūpasampadā; strīṇāmalaṅkāra-dharo bṛhat-pumān। prākāra-vapre pratimucya kuṇḍale; dīrghe ca kambū parihāṭake śubhe ॥04-10-1॥
Then another person appeared, endowed with beauty, bearing women's ornaments, a large man, on the rampart embankment, having adorned himself with earrings and an auspicious ornament on his long neck. (4-10-1)
bahūṁś ca dīrghāṁś ca vikīrya mūrdhajāḥ; mahābhujo vāraṇamatta-vikramaḥ. gatena bhūmim abhikampayaṁs tadā; virāṭam āsādya sabhā-samīpataḥ ॥04-10-2॥
He, with long arms and hair strewn about, possessing mighty arms and the stride of an intoxicated elephant, moved forward, making the earth quake as he went, and then, approaching Virāṭa near the assembly. (04-10-2)
taṁ prekṣya rājopagataṁ sabhā-tale; satra-praticchannam ari-pramāthinam. virājamānaṁ parameṇa varcasā; sutaṁ mahendrasya gajendra-vikramam ॥04-10-3॥
Seeing him, who had approached the king on the hall floor, veiled by the sacrificial session, the crusher of enemies, shining with supreme splendor, the son of Mahendra, with the might of the lord of elephants. (04-10-3)
sarvān apṛcchac ca samīpacāriṇaḥ; kuto'ayam āyāti na me purā śrutaḥ. na ca enam ūcur viditaṃ tadā narāḥ; savismitaṃ vākyam idaṃ nṛpo'bravīt ॥04-10-4॥
He questioned all those nearby: 'From where has this person come? I have never heard of him before.' And the men did not say that he was known at that time; then, with amazement, the king spoke these words. (04-10-4)
sarvopapannaḥ puruṣo manoramaḥ; śyāmo yuvā vāraṇayūthapopamaḥ। vimucya kambū pari-hāṭake śubhe; vimucya veṇīm api nahya kuṇḍale ॥04-10-5॥
The man, adorned with every quality and of pleasing appearance, is dark-skinned, youthful, and resembles the leader of a herd of elephants. He has removed the necklace, wears an auspicious outer garment, has undone the braid, and is now fastening the earrings. (04-10-5)
śikhī sukeśaḥ paridhāya cānyathā; bhavasva dhanvī kavacī śarī tathā. āruhy a yānaṃ paridhāvatāṃ bhavā; nsutaiḥ samo me bhava vā mayā samaḥ ॥04-10-6॥
O crested one with beautiful hair, putting on (armor) in any case, become one armed with a bow, wearing armor and arrows as well. Mount your vehicle and, with your sons, become my equal among those in the race, or else be equal to me. (4-10-6)
vṛddho hy ahaṃ vai parihārakāmaḥ; sarvān matsyān tarasā pālayasva. naivaṃvidhāḥ klībarūpā bhavanti; kathaṃcaneti pratibhāti me manaḥ ॥04-10-7॥
Truly, I am old and only wish to avoid trouble; protect all the fishes quickly. Such as these are never weak in spirit; so it seems to my mind. (04-10-7)

I sing, I dance, and I play instruments; I am auspicious, skilled in dance, and skilled in song. For the answer, O king, you yourself give me over; I will become the queen's dancer. (04-10-8)
idaṁ tu rūpaṁ mama yena kiṁ nu ta; tprakīrtayitvā bhṛśaśokavardhanam। bṛhannaḍāṁ vai naradeva viddhi māṁ; sutaṁ sutāṁ vā pitṛmātṛvarjitām॥04-10-9॥
But as for this form of mine—what am I to you by it? By declaring that, great sorrow is only increased. O king, know me as Bṛhannadā, a child—son or daughter—deprived of both father and mother. (04-10-9)

dadāmi te hanta varaṃ bṛhannade; sutāṃ ca me nartaya yāś ca tādṛśīḥ. idaṃ tu te karma samaṃ na me mataṃ; samudranemiṃ pṛthivīṃ tvam arhasi ॥04-10-10॥
I grant you a boon, O Bṛhannada; you may have my daughter and make dance others who are like her. But this act of yours is not agreeable to me as equal; however, you deserve the whole earth encircled by the ocean. (04-10-10)

The king of the fish, having observed her with the great lute in the arts of dance and music, and upon firmly hearing of his impotence, then dismissed him from Kumārīpura. (04-10-11)
sa śikṣayāmāsa ca gīta-vāditaṃ; sutāṃ virāṭasya dhanañjayaḥ prabhuḥ. sakhīś ca tasyāḥ paricārikās tathā; priyaś ca tāsāṃ sa babhūva pāṇḍavaḥ ॥04-10-12॥
Dhanañjaya, the lord, taught singing and instrumental music to the daughter of Virāṭa. He also became dear to her female friends and maidservants; thus the Pāṇḍava was beloved by them all. (04-10-12)
tathā sa satreṇa dhanañjayo'vasa; tpriyāṇi kurvansaha tābhirātmavān. tathāgataṃ tatra na jajñire janā; bahiścarā vāpyathavāntarecarāḥ ॥04-10-13॥
Thus, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) stayed there with the sacrifice, doing pleasing things along with those women, self-controlled. No people, whether moving outside or within, recognized his presence there. (04-10-13)
