अथापरोऽदृश्यत पाण्डवः प्रभु; र्विराटराज्ञस्तुरगान्समीक्षतः। तमापतन्तं ददृशे पृथग्जनो; विमुक्तमभ्रादिव सूर्यमण्डलम् ॥०४-११-१॥
athāparo'dṛśyata pāṇḍavaḥ prabhuḥ; virāṭarājñas turagān samīkṣataḥ. tam āpatantaṃ dadṛśe pṛthag-janaḥ; vimuktam abhrād iva sūryamaṇḍalam ॥04-11-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपरो (aparaḥ) - another; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - was seen; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; विराटराज्ञः (virāṭarājñaḥ) - of King Virāṭa; तुरगान् (turagān) - horses; समीक्षतः (samīkṣataḥ) - while observing; तम् (tam) - him; आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - rushing; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - was seen; पृथग्जनः (pṛthag-janaḥ) - common people; विमुक्तम् (vimuktam) - emerging; अभ्रात् (abhrāt) - from the cloud; इव (iva) - like; सूर्यमण्डलम् (sūryamaṇḍalam) - solar orb;]
(Then another Pāṇḍava lord was seen; while observing the horses of King Virāṭa. Him rushing was seen by the common people, emerging from the cloud like the solar orb.)
Then, another Pāṇḍava lord appeared — as he looked upon King Virāṭa's horses. The people saw him rushing forth, like the solar orb emerging from a cloud. (04-11-1)
स वै हयानैक्षत तांस्ततस्ततः; समीक्षमाणं च ददर्श मत्स्यराट्। ततोऽब्रवीत्ताननुगानमित्रहा; कुतोऽयमायाति नरोऽमरप्रभः ॥०४-११-२॥

(He indeed saw the horses, those from here and there; observing also, the king of the fish saw; then he said to his followers, the destroyer of enemies: From where does this man, with the glory of the immortals, come?)
He indeed saw the horses here and there; observing them, the king of the fish also saw. Then the destroyer of enemies said to his followers: From where does this man, shining like the immortals, come? (04-11-2)
अयं हयान्वीक्षति मामकान्दृढं; ध्रुवं हयज्ञो भविता विचक्षणः। प्रवेश्यतामेष समीपमाशु मे; विभाति वीरो हि यथामरस्तथा ॥०४-११-३॥
ayaṁ hayān-vīkṣati māmakān-dṛḍhaṁ; dhruvaṁ hayajño bhavitā vicakṣaṇaḥ। praveśyatām-eṣa samīpam āśu me; vibhāti vīro hi yathāmaras-tathā ॥04-11-3॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this one; हयान् (hayān) - horses; वीक्षति (vīkṣati) - looks at; मामकान् (māmakān) - mine; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - steadily; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; हय-ज्ञः (haya-jñaḥ) - knower of horses; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; विचक्षणः (vicakṣaṇaḥ) - wise; प्रवेश्यताम् (praveśyatām) - let him be brought in; एषः (eṣaḥ) - he; समीपम् (samīpam) - near; आशु (āśu) - quickly; मे (me) - to me; विभाति (vibhāti) - shines; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; हि (hi) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; अमरः (amaraḥ) - deity; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(This one looks at my horses steadily; certainly, a knower of horses he will be, wise. Let him be brought near to me quickly; the hero shines indeed as a deity so.)
He observes my horses intently; surely, he is a wise judge of horses. Let him be quickly brought near to me; this hero indeed shines like a god. (04-11-3)
अभ्येत्य राजानममित्रहाब्रवी; ज्जयोऽस्तु ते पार्थिव भद्रमस्तु च। हयेषु युक्तो नृप संमतः सदा; तवाश्वसूतो निपुणो भवाम्यहम् ॥०४-११-४॥
abhyetya rājānam amitraḥ ābravīt; jayo'stu te pārthiva bhadram astu ca. hayeṣu yuktaḥ nṛpa saṃmataḥ sadā; tava aśva-sūtaḥ nipuṇaḥ bhavāmi aham ॥04-11-4॥

(Having approached the king, the foe said; Victory be yours, O king, may well-being also be yours. Qualified in horses, O ruler, always approved; as your charioteer I become skilful I.)
Having approached the king, the enemy said, "Victory be yours, O king, and may you have well-being. I am always skilled and approved in the handling of horses, O king; let me become your charioteer." (4-11-4)

dadāmi yānāni dhanaṃ niveśanaṃ; mamāśvasūto bhavituṃ tvamarhasi. kuto'si kasyāsi kathaṃ tvamāgataḥ; prabrūhi śilpaṃ tava vidyate ca yat ॥04-11-5॥

I will give vehicles, wealth, and a dwelling; you are worthy to become my charioteer. From where are you, to whom do you belong, how have you come here? Tell me what skill you possess and which (it is). (04-11-5)

pañcānāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ jyeṣṭho rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। tenāham aśveṣu purā prakṛtaḥ śatrukarśana ॥04-11-6॥

अश्वानां प्रकृतिं वेद्मि विनयं चापि सर्वशः। दुष्टानां प्रतिपत्तिं च कृत्स्नं चैव चिकित्सितम् ॥०४-११-७॥
aśvānāṃ prakṛtiṃ vedmi vinayaṃ cāpi sarvaśaḥ। duṣṭānāṃ pratipattiṃ ca kṛtsnaṃ caiva cikitsitam ॥04-11-7॥
[अश्वानां (aśvānāṃ) - of horses; प्रकृतिं (prakṛtim) - nature; वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; विनयं (vinayam) - discipline; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; दुष्टानां (duṣṭānāṃ) - of the wicked / spoiled ones; प्रतिपत्तिं (pratipattim) - method; च (ca) - and; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - completely; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चिकित्सितम् (cikitsitam) - treatment;]
(Of horses nature I know, discipline also entirely; of the wicked ones method and completely indeed treatment.)
I know entirely the nature of horses and their discipline; I also understand completely the methods and treatments for even the wicked ones. (04-11-7)
न कातरं स्यान्मम जातु वाहनं; न मेऽस्ति दुष्टा वडवा कुतो हयाः। जनस्तु मामाह स चापि पाण्डवो; युधिष्ठिरो ग्रन्थिकमेव नामतः ॥०४-११-८॥
na kātaraṃ syān mama jātu vāhanaṃ; na me 'sti duṣṭā vaḍavā kuto hayāḥ. janastu mām āha sa cāpi pāṇḍavo; yudhiṣṭhiro granthikam eva nāmataḥ ॥04-11-8॥
[न (na) - not; कातरं (kātaraṃ) - timid; स्यान् (syān) - may be; मम (mama) - my; जातु (jātu) - ever; वाहनं (vāhanaṃ) - vehicle; न (na) - not; मेऽस्ति (me 'sti) - for me is; दुष्टा (duṣṭā) - wicked; वडवा (vaḍavā) - mare; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how (from where); हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; जनः (janaḥ) - people; तु (tu) - but; माम् (mām) - me; आह (āha) - said; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; ग्रन्थिकम् (granthikam) - knotty (one with knots); एव (eva) - only; नामतः (nāmataḥ) - by name;]
(Not timid may be my ever vehicle; not for me is a wicked mare, how (then) horses? People but me said, he also, the Pāṇḍava, Yudhishthira (called me) "Knotty" by name.)
My vehicle could never be timid, nor do I even have a wicked mare — let alone horses! Yet people, and even the Pāṇḍava Yudhishthira, have called me by the name "Granthika" (Knotty). (04-11-8)

यदस्ति किञ्चिन्मम वाजिवाहनं; तदस्तु सर्वं त्वदधीनमद्य वै। ये चापि केचिन्मम वाजियोजका; स्त्वदाश्रयाः सारथयश्च सन्तु मे ॥०४-११-९॥
yad asti kiñcin mama vāji-vāhanaṁ; tad astu sarvaṁ tvad-adhīnam adya vai। ye ca api kecin mama vāji-yojakāḥ; tvad-āśrayāḥ sārathayaś ca santu me ॥04-11-9॥
[यत् (yat) - whatever; अस्ति (asti) - is; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; मम (mama) - my; वाजिवाहनम् (vāji-vāhanam) - horse-drawn vehicle; तत् (tat) - that; अस्तु (astu) - let be; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; त्वदधीनम् (tvad-adhīnam) - dependent on you; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; केचन (kecana) - any; मम (mama) - my; वाजियोजकाः (vāji-yojakāḥ) - horse-trainers; त्वदाश्रयाः (tvad-āśrayāḥ) - reliant upon you; सारथयः (sārathayaḥ) - charioteers; च (ca) - and; सन्तु (santu) - may be; मे (me) - for me;]
(Whatever is something of mine, horse-drawn vehicle; let that all be dependent on you today indeed. And whoever any of my horse-trainers and charioteers are; may they be reliant upon you for me (04-11-9))
Whatever horse-drawn vehicle I have, let it all be under your authority today. And whoever among my horse-trainers and charioteers there are, let them all depend upon you for me. (04-11-9)
इदं तवेष्टं यदि वै सुरोपम; ब्रवीहि यत्ते प्रसमीक्षितं वसु। न तेऽनुरूपं हयकर्म विद्यते; प्रभासि राजेव हि संमतो मम ॥०४-११-१०॥
idaṃ taveṣṭaṃ yadi vai suropama; bravīhi yatte prasamīkṣitaṃ vasu. na te'nurūpaṃ hayakarma vidyate; prabhāsi rājeva hi saṃmato mama ॥04-11-10॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तव (tava) - to you; इष्टं (iṣṭam) - desired; यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; सुरोपम (suropama) - godlike; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - to you; प्रसमीक्षितं (prasamīkṣitam) - carefully considered; वसु (vasu) - wealth; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; अनुरूपं (anurūpam) - befitting; हयकर्म (hayakarma) - horse-task; (horse-related act) विध्यते (vidyate) - is found; प्रभासि (prabhāsi) - you shine; राजा (rājā) - king; इव (iva) - like; हि (hi) - indeed; संमतो (saṃmataḥ) - agreed (by); मम (mama) - by me;]
(This to you desired if indeed godlike; tell what to you carefully considered wealth. Not for you befitting horse-task is found; you shine like a king indeed agreed (by) me. (04-11-10))
If this desired thing, indeed godlike, is yours, tell me what wealth you seek that you have carefully considered. The horse-related action is not befitting for you; you shine like a king, indeed esteemed by me. (04-11-10)
युधिष्ठिरस्येव हि दर्शनेन मे; समं तवेदं प्रियदर्श दर्शनम्। कथं तु भृत्यैः स विनाकृतो वने; वसत्यनिन्द्यो रमते च पाण्डवः ॥०४-११-११॥
yudhiṣṭhirasyaiva hi darśanena me; samaṃ tavedaṃ priyadarśa darśanam. kathaṃ tu bhṛtyaiḥ sa vinākṛto vane; vasatyanindyo ramate ca pāṇḍavaḥ ॥04-11-11॥
[युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely; दर्शनेन (darśanena) - by the sight; मे (me) - to me; समम् (samam) - equal; तव (tava) - your; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रियदर्श (priyadarśa) - O Priyadarsha; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; कथम् (katham) - how; तु (tu) - but; भृत्यैः (bhṛtyaiḥ) - by attendants; स (sa) - he; विनाकृतः (vinākṛtaḥ) - deprived; वने (vane) - in the forest; वसति (vasati) - dwells; अनिन्द्यः (anindyaḥ) - blameless; रमते (ramate) - rejoices; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pandu;]
(To me, indeed, the sight of you, O Priyadarsha, is equal to the sight of Yudhiṣṭhira. But how does that blameless son of Pandu, deprived of attendants, dwell and rejoice in the forest?)
The sight of you, O Priyadarsha, is truly as pleasing to me as seeing Yudhiṣṭhira himself. But how does that blameless son of Pandu, deprived of his attendants, live and find joy in the forest? (04-11-11)

tathā sa gandharvavaropamo yuvā; virāṭarājñā muditena pūjitaḥ. na ca enam anye'pi viduḥ kathaṃcana; priyābhirāmaṃ vicarantam antarā ॥04-11-12॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; स (sa) - he; गन्धर्ववर-उपमः (gandharvavara-upamaḥ) - like the best among the Gandharvas; युवा (yuvā) - young man; विराट्-राज्ञा (virāṭ-rājñā) - by King Virāṭa; मुदितेन (muditena) - with delight; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; न च (na ca) - and not; एनम् (enam) - him; अन्ये अपि (anye api) - others also; विदुः (viduḥ) - knew; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; प्रिय-अभिरामम् (priya-abhirāmam) - beloved and charming; विचरन्तम् (vicarantam) - wandering; अन्तरा (antarā) - in the midst (of the people);]
(Thus he, a young man like the best among Gandharvas, honored with delight by King Virāṭa. And him, others also did not know in any way—the beloved and charming one, wandering in the midst (of the people).)
Thus, he, a youth like the foremost of the Gandharvas, was joyfully honored by King Virāṭa. Yet none of the others knew him in any way, as he, beloved and charming, moved about among them. (04-11-12)
एवं हि मत्स्ये न्यवसन्त पाण्डवा; यथाप्रतिज्ञाभिरमोघदर्शनाः। अज्ञातचर्यां व्यचरन्समाहिताः; समुद्रनेमीपतयोऽतिदुःखिताः ॥०४-११-१३॥
evaṁ hi matsye nyavasanta pāṇḍavā; yathāpratijñābhir amoghadarśanāḥ। ajñātacaryāṁ vyacaran samāhitāḥ; samudranemīpatayo 'tiduḥkhitāḥ ॥04-11-13॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; मत्स्ये (matsye) - in the Matsya (kingdom); न्यवसन्त (nyavasanta) - they dwelt; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; यथा (yathā) - according as; प्रतिज्ञाभिः (pratijñābhiḥ) - with their vows; अमोघदर्शनाः (amoghadarśanāḥ) - faultless-seeing (ones); अज्ञातचर्यां (ajñātacaryāṁ) - in incognito mode of living; व्यचरन् (vyacaran) - they moved about; समाहिताः (samāhitāḥ) - steadfast; समुद्रनेमी (samudranemī) - with the ocean as the boundary; पतयः (patayaḥ) - lords (kings); अति (ati) - exceedingly; दुःखिताः (duḥkhitāḥ) - distressed;]
(Thus indeed in Matsya they dwelt the Pāṇḍavas; according as with their vows, faultless-seeing (ones). In incognito mode of living they moved about, steadfast; with the ocean as the boundary, lords, exceedingly distressed.)
Thus, the Pāṇḍavas indeed dwelt in the land of Matsya, steadfast and true to their vows, moving about incognito as men of flawless vision, and the kings, whose realms extended to the ocean, were exceedingly distressed. (04-11-13)
