युधिष्ठिरः सभास्तारः सभ्यानामभवत्प्रियः। तथैव च विराटस्य सपुत्रस्य विशां पते ॥०४-१२-३॥

स ह्यक्षहृदयज्ञस्तान्क्रीडयामास पाण्डवः। अक्षवत्यां यथाकामं सूत्रबद्धानिव द्विजान् ॥०४-१२-४॥

अज्ञातं च विराटस्य विजित्य वसु धर्मराट्। भ्रातृभ्यः पुरुषव्याघ्रो यथार्हं स्म प्रयच्छति ॥०४-१२-५॥

कृष्णापि सर्वान्भ्रातॄंस्तान्निरीक्षन्ती तपस्विनी। यथा पुनरविज्ञाता तथा चरति भामिनी ॥०४-१२-१०॥
kṛṣṇāpi sarvān bhrātṝṁs tān nirīkṣantī tapasvinī। yathā punar avijñātā tathā carati bhāminī॥04-12-10॥

(Kṛṣṇā also, all those brothers looking at, the ascetic lady, just as again unrecognized, so conducts herself the radiant lady.)
Kṛṣṇā too, looking at all those brothers, that ascetic lady moved about just as if she were unrecognized—the illustrious woman conducted herself in that way. (04-12-10)
एवं सम्पादयन्तस्ते तथान्योन्यं महारथाः। प्रेक्षमाणास्तदा कृष्णामूषुश्छन्ना नराधिप ॥०४-१२-११॥
evaṃ sampādayantaste tathānyonyaṃ mahārathāḥ। prekṣamāṇāstadā kṛṣṇāmūṣuśchannā narādhipa ॥04-12-11॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सम्पादयन्तः (sampādayantaḥ) - accomplishing; ते (te) - they; तथा (tathā) - in that manner; अन्योन्यं (anyonyaṃ) - each other; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; प्रेक्षमाणाः (prekṣamāṇāḥ) - observing; तदा (tadā) - then; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); ऊषुः (ūṣuḥ) - dwelt; छन्नाः (channāḥ) - hidden; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Thus accomplishing, they, in that manner with each other, the great chariot-warriors, observing then Kṛṣṇā, dwelt hidden, O king.)
Thus, O king, those great chariot-warriors, while accomplishing (their aims) in this way with each other and watching Kṛṣṇā, concealed themselves and stayed in hiding. (04-12-11)
अथ मासे चतुर्थे तु ब्रह्मणः सुमहोत्सवः। आसीत्समृद्धो मत्स्येषु पुरुषाणां सुसंमतः ॥०४-१२-१२॥
atha māse caturthe tu brahmaṇaḥ sumahotsavaḥ । āsītsamṛddho matsyeṣu puruṣāṇāṃ susammataḥ ॥04-12-12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; मासे (māse) - in the month; चतुर्थे (caturthe) - fourth; तु (tu) - but; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; सुमहोत्सवः (sumahotsavaḥ) - great festival; अासीद् (āsīt) - there was; समृद्धः (samṛddhaḥ) - prosperous; मत्स्येषु (matsyeṣu) - among the Matsyas; पुरुषाणां (puruṣāṇāṃ) - of men; सुसंमतः (susammataḥ) - well-regarded;]
(Then, in the fourth month, but the great festival of Brahmā was there, prosperous among the Matsyas, of men, well-regarded.)

तत्र मल्लाः समापेतुर्दिग्भ्यो राजन्सहस्रशः। महाकाया महावीर्याः कालखञ्जा इवासुराः ॥०४-१२-१३॥
tatra mallāḥ samāpetur digbhyo rājan sahasraśaḥ। mahākāyā mahāvīryāḥ kālakhañjā ivāsurāḥ॥04-12-13॥

(There wrestlers approached from the directions, O king, by thousands. Great-bodied, of great vigor, crooked by Time, like demons.)
O king, there wrestlers by the thousands gathered from all directions—great-bodied and mighty, misshapen by Time, like demons. (04-12-13)
वीर्योन्नद्धा बलोदग्रा राज्ञा समभिपूजिताः। सिंहस्कन्धकटिग्रीवाः स्ववदाता मनस्विनः ॥ असकृल्लब्धलक्षास्ते रङ्गे पार्थिवसंनिधौ ॥०४-१२-१४॥
vīryonnaddhā balodgrā rājñā samabhipūjitāḥ। siṃhaskandhakatigrīvāḥ svavadātā manasvinaḥ॥ asakṛllabdhalakṣāste raṅge pārthivasaṃnidhau॥04-12-14॥

(Strongly endowed with heroism, exceedingly powerful, properly honored by the king, having shoulders, waists, and necks like lions, having their own brightness, high-minded—repeatedly attaining their aim, they on the arena in the presence of the king.)
Endowed with great heroism, exceedingly strong, honored by the king, with the shoulders, waist, and necks of lions, possessing self-born radiance and a noble mind—those men repeatedly achieved their aims on the arena in the presence of the king. (4-12-14)
तेषामेको महानासीत्सर्वमल्लान्समाह्वयत्। आवल्गमानं तं रङ्गे नोपतिष्ठति कश्चन ॥०४-१२-१५॥
teṣām eko mahān āsīt sarva-mallān samāhvayat। āvalgamānaṃ taṃ raṅge nopatiṣṭhati kaścana॥04-12-15॥

(Of them, one great (wrestler) was, all wrestlers he challenged together. Leaping, him in the arena, not approaches anyone.)
Among them, there was one great wrestler who challenged all the wrestlers together. Although he was leaping in the arena, not a single person approached him. (04-12-15)
यदा सर्वे विमनसस्ते मल्ला हतचेतसः। अथ सूदेन तं मल्लं योधयामास मत्स्यराट् ॥०४-१२-१६॥
yadā sarve vimanasaste mallā hatacetasaḥ। atha sūdena taṃ mallaṃ yodhayāmāsa matsyarāṭ॥04-12-16॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विमनसः (vimanasaḥ) - dispirited; ते (te) - they; मल्लाः (mallāḥ) - wrestlers; हतचेतसः (hatacetasaḥ) - destroyed in spirit; अथ (atha) - then; सूदेन (sūdena) - by the charioteer; तम् (tam) - that; मल्लम् (mallam) - wrestler; योधयामास (yodhayāmāsa) - caused to fight; मत्स्यराट् (matsyarāṭ) - the king of Matsya;]
(When all those wrestlers were dispirited, their spirits destroyed, then the king of Matsya caused that wrestler to fight by the charioteer.)
When all the wrestlers became dispirited and downcast, then the king of Matsya had the charioteer make that wrestler fight. (04-12-16)
चोद्यमानस्ततो भीमो दुःखेनैवाकरोन्मतिम्। न हि शक्नोति विवृते प्रत्याख्यातुं नराधिपम् ॥०४-१२-१७॥
codyamānas tato bhīmo duḥkhenaiva akarot matim। na hi śaknoti vivṛte pratyākhyātuṃ narādhipam॥04-12-17॥

Then, being questioned, Bhīma, deeply grieved, made up his mind, for he could not openly refuse the king. (04-12-17)
ततः स पुरुषव्याघ्रः शार्दूलशिथिलं चरन्। प्रविवेश महारङ्गं विराटमभिहर्षयन् ॥०४-१२-१८॥
tataḥ sa puruṣavyāghraḥ śārdūlaśithilaṃ caran। praviveśa mahāraṅgaṃ virāṭam abhiharṣayan॥04-12-18॥

बबन्ध कक्ष्यां कौन्तेयस्ततस्तं हर्षयञ्जनम्। ततस्तं वृत्रसङ्काशं भीमो मल्लं समाह्वयत् ॥०४-१२-१९॥
babandha kakṣyāṁ kaunteyas tatas taṁ harṣayañjanam। tatas taṁ vṛtra-saṅkāśaṁ bhīmo mallaṁ samāhvayat ॥04-12-19॥

चकर्ष दोर्भ्यामुत्पाट्य भीमो मल्लममित्रहा। विनदन्तमभिक्रोशञ्शार्दूल इव वारणम् ॥०४-१२-२१॥
cakarṣa dorbhyām utpāṭya bhīmo mallam amitrahā। vinadantam abhikrośan śārdūla iva vāraṇam॥04-12-21॥
[चकर्ष (cakarṣa) - dragged; दORB्याम् (dorbhyām) - with (his) two arms; उत्पाट्य (utpāṭya) - having uprooted; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; मल्लम् (mallam) - the wrestler; अमित्रहा (amitrahā) - destroyer of enemies; विनदन्तम् (vinadantam) - roaring; अभिक्रोशन् (abhikrośan) - shouting at; शार्दूलः (śārdūlaḥ) - tiger; इव (iva) - like; वारणम् (vāraṇam) - an elephant;]
(Dragged with his two arms, having uprooted, Bhima the destroyer of enemies the wrestler, roaring, shouting at, like a tiger (attacks) an elephant.)
Bhima, the destroyer of enemies, uprooted the wrestler with his two arms and dragged him, roaring and shouting at him, like a tiger attacks an elephant. (04-12-21)
तमुद्यम्य महाबाहुर्भ्रामयामास वीर्यवान्। ततो मल्लाश्च मत्स्याश्च विस्मयं चक्रिरे परम् ॥०४-१२-२२॥
tam udyamya mahābāhur bhrāmayām āsa vīryavān। tato mallāś ca matsyāś ca vismayaṃ cakrire param॥04-12-22॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having lifted up; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; भ्रामयामास (bhrāmayām āsa) - caused to whirl; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - possessing strength; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मल्लाः (mallāḥ) - wrestlers; च (ca) - and; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - Matsyas (people of Matsya); च (ca) - and; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - experienced; परम् (param) - great;]
(Him having lifted up, the mighty-armed (one) possessing strength caused to whirl. Then the wrestlers and the Matsyas experienced great astonishment.)
The mighty-armed, powerful one lifted him up and whirled him. Then the wrestlers and the people of Matsya were greatly astonished. (04-12-22)
भ्रामयित्वा शतगुणं गतसत्त्वमचेतनम्। प्रत्यपिंषन्महाबाहुर्मल्लं भुवि वृकोदरः ॥०४-१२-२३॥
bhrāmayitvā śataguṇaṁ gatasattvamacetanam. pratyapiṁṣanmahābāhurmallaṁ bhuvi vṛkodaraḥ ॥04-12-23॥
[भ्रामयित्वा (bhrāmayitvā) - having whirled; शतगुणं (śataguṇam) - a hundredfold (turns); गतसत्त्वम् (gatasattvam) - devoid of strength; अचेतनम् (acetanam) - unconscious; प्रत्यपिंषण् (pratyapiṁṣan) - he threw down; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; मल्लम् (mallam) - the wrestler; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara;]
(Having whirled the wrestler a hundredfold, devoid of strength, unconscious, the mighty-armed Vṛkodara threw him on the ground.)
Vṛkodara, the mighty-armed, whirled the wrestler a hundred times and, when he was devoid of strength and unconscious, threw him down on the ground. (04-12-23)
तस्मिन्विनिहते मल्ले जीमूते लोकविश्रुते। विराटः परमं हर्षमगच्छद्बान्धवैः सह ॥०४-१२-२४॥
tasmin-vinihate malle jīmūte loka-viśrute। virāṭaḥ paramaṃ harṣam agacchad bāndhavaiḥ saha॥04-12-24॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; विनिहते (vinihate) - having been slain; मल्ले (malle) - wrestler; जीमूते (jīmūte) - Jīmūta (proper noun); लोकविश्रुते (loka-viśrute) - famed in the world; विराटः (virāṭaḥ) - Virāṭa (proper noun); परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; हर्षम् (harṣam) - joy; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - attained; बान्धवैः (bāndhavaiḥ) - with kinsmen; सह (saha) - together with;]
(In that, the wrestler Jīmūta, famed in the world, having been slain, Virāṭa attained supreme joy together with kinsmen.)
When that wrestler Jīmūta, renowned in the world, was slain, Virāṭa, along with his kinsmen, attained the highest joy. (04-12-24)
संहर्षात्प्रददौ वित्तं बहु राजा महामनाः। बल्लवाय महारङ्गे यथा वैश्रवणस्तथा ॥०४-१२-२५॥
saṁharṣāt pradadau vittaṁ bahu rājā mahā-manāḥ। ballavāya mahā-raṅge yathā vaiśravaṇas tathā॥04-12-25॥
[संहर्षात् (saṁharṣāt) - from great joy; प्रददौ (pradadau) - he gave; वित्तं (vittaṁ) - wealth; बहु (bahu) - much; राजा (rājā) - the king; महामनाः (mahā-manāḥ) - of great mind; बल्लवाय (ballavāya) - to Ballava; महारङ्गे (mahā-raṅge) - in the great arena; यथा (yathā) - as; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera); तथा (tathā) - so;]
(From great joy the king, of great mind, gave much wealth to Ballava in the great arena, as Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera) (does), so.)
Out of great joy, the magnanimous king gave much wealth to Ballava in the great arena, just as Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera) would do. (04-12-25)
एवं स सुबहून्मल्लान्पुरुषांश्च महाबलान्। विनिघ्नन्मत्स्यराजस्य प्रीतिमावहदुत्तमाम् ॥०४-१२-२६॥
evaṃ sa subahūn mallān puruṣāṃś ca mahābalān। vinighnan matsyarājasya prītim āvahad uttamām॥04-12-26॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स (sa) - he; सुबहून् (subahūn) - many; मल्लान् (mallān) - wrestlers; पुरुषांश्च (puruṣāṃś ca) - and men; महाबलान् (mahābalān) - of great strength; विनिघ्नन् (vinighnan) - while vanquishing; मत्स्यराजस्य (matsyarājasya) - of the king of the Matsyas; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - joy; आवहत् (āvahat) - he brought; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - supreme;]
(Thus he, while vanquishing many wrestlers and men of great strength, brought supreme joy to the king of the Matsyas.)
In this way, while defeating many wrestlers and mighty men, he brought the utmost delight to the king of the Matsyas. (04-12-26)
यदास्य तुल्यः पुरुषो न कश्चित्तत्र विद्यते। ततो व्याघ्रैश्च सिंहैश्च द्विरदैश्चाप्ययोधयत् ॥०४-१२-२७॥
yadāsya tulyaḥ puruṣo na kaścittatra vidyate। tato vyāghraiśca siṁhaiśca dviradaiścāpyayodhayat ॥04-12-27॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; अस्य (asya) - his; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; न (na) - not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; तत्र (tatra) - there; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; ततः (tataḥ) - then; व्याघ्रैः (vyāghraiḥ) - with tigers; च (ca) - and; सिंहैः (siṁhaiḥ) - with lions; च (ca) - and; द्विरदैः (dviradaiḥ) - with elephants; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अयोधयत् (ayodhayat) - he fought;]
(When his equal man not any there exists, then with tigers and and with lions and with elephants and also he fought.)
When there was no man equal to him there, then he fought with tigers, lions, and elephants also. (04-12-27)
पुनरन्तःपुरगतः स्त्रीणां मध्ये वृकोदरः। योध्यते स्म विराटेन सिंहैर्मत्तैर्महाबलैः ॥०४-१२-२८॥
punarantaḥpuragataḥ strīṇām madhye vṛkodaraḥ. yodhyate sma virāṭena siṃhair mattair mahābalaiḥ ॥04-12-28॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) (punaḥ) - again; अन्तःपुरगतः (antaḥpuragataḥ) (antaḥpuragataḥ) - having entered the inner apartments; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) (strīṇām) - of the women; मध्ये (madhye) (madhye) - among; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); योध्यते (yodhyate) (yodhyate) - was fought; स्म (sma) (sma) - indeed; विराटेन (virāṭena) (virāṭena) - by Virāṭa; सिंहैः (siṃhaiḥ) (siṃhaiḥ) - with lions; मत्तैः (mattaiḥ) (mattaiḥ) - mad, intoxicated; महाबलैः (mahābalaiḥ) (mahābalaiḥ) - of great strength;]
(Again, having entered the inner apartments, among the women, Vṛkodara was fought by Virāṭa with lions, mad, of great strength.)
Again, having entered the inner quarters, Vṛkodara (Bhīma) was engaged in battle by Virāṭa with mad and mighty lions, in the presence of the women. (04-12-28)
बीभत्सुरपि गीतेन सुनृत्तेन च पाण्डवः। विराटं तोषयामास सर्वाश्चान्तःपुरस्त्रियः ॥०४-१२-२९॥
bībhatsur api gītena sunṛttena ca pāṇḍavaḥ। virāṭaṃ toṣayāmāsa sarvāś cāntaḥpurastriyaḥ॥04-12-29॥
[बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Arjuna (the terrible one); अपि (api) - also; गीतेन (gītena) - with (his) singing; सुनृत्तेन (sunṛttena) - with good dancing; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna); विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virāṭa; तोषयामास (toṣayāmāsa) - gratified; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; च (ca) - and; अन्तःपुरस्त्रियः (antaḥpurastriyaḥ) - the women of the inner palace;]
(Bībhatsuḥ (Arjuna) also with singing and with good dancing, the Pāṇḍava gratified Virāṭa and all the women of the inner palace.)
Arjuna, even as Bībhatsu, delighted King Virāṭa and all the women of the inner palace with his singing and excellent dancing. (04-12-29)
अश्वैर्विनीतैर्जवनैस्तत्र तत्र समागतैः। तोषयामास नकुलो राजानं राजसत्तम ॥०४-१२-३०॥
aśvairvinītairjavanaistatra tatra samāgataiḥ। toṣayāmāsa nakulo rājānaṃ rājasattama ॥04-12-30॥
[अश्वैः (aśvaiḥ) - with horses; विनीतैः (vinītaiḥ) - disciplined; जवनैः (javanais) - swift; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; समागतैः (samāgataiḥ) - brought together; तोषयामास (toṣayāmāsa) - gratified; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - best among kings;]
(With horses disciplined and swift, here and there assembled, Nakula gratified the king, best among kings.)
Nakula gratified the king, the best among kings, by assembling disciplined and swift horses here and there. (04-12-30)
तस्मै प्रदेयं प्रायच्छत्प्रीतो राजा धनं बहु। विनीतान्वृषभान्दृष्ट्वा सहदेवस्य चाभिभो ॥०४-१२-३१॥
tasmai pradeyaṃ prāyacchatprīto rājā dhanaṃ bahu। vinītānvṛṣabhāndṛṣṭvā sahadevasya cābhibho ॥04-12-31॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रदेयं (pradeyam) - to be given; प्रायच्छत् (prāyacchat) - he gave; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; राजा (rājā) - the king; धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; बहु (bahu) - much; विनीतान् (vinītān) - humble; वृषभान् (vṛṣabhān) - bulls; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सहदेवस्य (sahadevasya) - of Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; अभिभो (abhibho) - O chief;]
(To him to be given gave, pleased, the king much wealth, humble bulls having seen, of Sahadeva and O chief.)
The king, pleased, gave much wealth to him, having seen the humble bulls of Sahadeva, O chief. (04-12-31)
एवं ते न्यवसंस्तत्र प्रच्छन्नाः पुरुषर्षभाः। कर्माणि तस्य कुर्वाणा विराटनृपतेस्तदा ॥०४-१२-३२॥
evaṁ te nyavasaṁs tatra pracchannāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ। karmāṇi tasya kurvāṇā virāṭanṛpates tadā॥04-12-32॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; ते (te) - they; न्यवसं्स् (nyavasaṁs) - dwelt; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रच्छन्नाः (pracchannāḥ) - inconspicuous; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - tasks; तस्य (tasya) - of him; कुर्वाणा (kurvāṇā) - performing; विराटनृपतेः (virāṭanṛpateḥ) - of king Virāṭa; तदा (tadā) - at that time; ॥०४-१२-३२॥ (॥04-12-32॥) -;]
(Thus they dwelt there, inconspicuous bulls among men, performing tasks of him, of king Virāṭa, at that time.)
Thus, those foremost of men lived there concealed, performing tasks for King Virāṭa at that time. (04-12-32)
