vasamāneṣu pārtheṣu matsyasya nagare tadā। mahāratheṣu channeṣu māsā daśa samatyayuḥ ॥04-13-1॥

While the Pāṇḍavas were hiding in the city of Matsya at that time, ten months passed by as those great warriors remained concealed. (04-13-1)
याज्ञसेनी सुदेष्णां तु शुश्रूषन्ती विशां पते। अवसत्परिचारार्हा सुदुःखं जनमेजय ॥०४-१३-२॥

O Janamejaya! Draupadī, though deserving of the highest honor, dwelt in great suffering at the palace of Sudeṣṇā, serving her, O lord of the people. (04-13-2)
तथा चरन्तीं पाञ्चालीं सुदेष्णाया निवेशने। सेनापतिर्विराटस्य ददर्श जलजाननाम् ॥०४-१३-३॥
tathā carantīṁ pāñcālīṁ sudeṣṇāyā niveśane. senāpatiḥ virāṭasya dadarśa jalajān-anām ॥04-13-3॥

Thus, as Panchali was wandering in Sudeṣnā’s mansion, the commander of Virata, who had a lotus-like face, saw her. (04-13-3)
तां दृष्ट्वा देवगर्भाभां चरन्तीं देवतामिव। कीचकः कामयामास कामबाणप्रपीडितः ॥०४-१३-४॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā devagarbhābhāṃ carantīṃ devatām iva। kīcakaḥ kāmayām āsa kāmabāṇa-prapīḍitaḥ ॥04-13-4॥
[तां (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; देवगर्भाभां (devagarbhābhām) - shining like a divine one; चरन्तीं (carantīm) - walking; देवतामिव (devatām iva) - like a goddess; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; कामयामास (kāmayām āsa) - desired; कामबाणप्रपीडितः (kāmabāṇa-prapīḍitaḥ) - afflicted by the arrow of desire;]
(Her having seen, shining like a divine one, walking like a goddess, Kīcaka desired, afflicted by the arrow of desire.)
Seeing her, who shone like a divine being and walked like a goddess, Kīcaka was overcome with desire, pierced by the arrows of passion. (04-13-4)
स तु कामाग्निसन्तप्तः सुदेष्णामभिगम्य वै। प्रहसन्निव सेनानीरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०४-१३-५॥
sa tu kāmāgnisantaptaḥ sudeṣṇām abhi-gamya vai। prahasann iva senānīr idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥04-13-5॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; कामाग्निसन्तप्तः (kāmāgni-santaptaḥ) - burned by the fire of desire; सुदेष्णाम् (sudeṣṇām) - to Sudeṣṇā; अभिगम्य (abhi-gamya) - having approached; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रहसन्निव (prahasan iva) - as if smiling; सेनानीः (senānīḥ) - the commander; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(He but burned by the fire of desire, having approached Sudeṣṇā indeed, as if smiling, the commander spoke this speech.)
But he, inflamed by the fire of desire, approached Sudeṣṇā; as if smiling, the commander spoke these words. (04-13-5)
नेयं पुरा जातु मयेह दृष्टा; राज्ञो विराटस्य निवेशने शुभा। रूपेण चोन्मादयतीव मां भृशं; गन्धेन जाता मदिरेव भामिनी ॥०४-१३-६॥
neyaṁ purā jātu mayeha dṛṣṭā; rājño virāṭasya niveśane śubhā। rūpeṇa conmādayatīva māṁ bhṛśaṁ; gandhena jātā madireva bhāminī ॥04-13-6॥
[नेयं (neyaṁ) - not this; पुरा (purā) - before; जातु (jātu) - at any time; मया (mayā) - by me; इह (iha) - here; दृष्टा (dṛṣṭā) - seen; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - Virāṭa; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the residence; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious woman; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - with her beauty; च (ca) - and; उन्मादयतीव (unmādayatīva) - as if maddens; माम् (mām) - me; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; गन्धेन (gandhena) - by fragrance; जाता (jātā) - she has become; मदिरा (madirā) - like wine; इव (iva) - as if; भामिनी (bhāminī) - beautiful woman;]
(Not this before at any time by me here seen; of the king Virāṭa in the residence auspicious woman. With her beauty and as if maddens me greatly; by fragrance she has become like wine as if, beautiful woman.)
This auspicious woman, I have never seen here before at any time in the palace of King Virāṭa. By her beauty she seems to greatly intoxicate me, and by her fragrance she has become like wine, this beautiful lady. (04-13-6)
का देवरूपा हृदयङ्गमा शुभे; आचक्ष्व मे का च कुतश्च शोभना। चित्तं हि निर्मथ्य करोति मां वशे; न चान्यदत्रौषधमद्य मे मतम् ॥०४-१३-७॥
kā devarūpā hṛdayaṅgamā śubhe; ācakṣva me kā ca kutaśca śobhanā. cittaṃ hi nirmathya karoti māṃ vaśe; na cānyadatrauṣadhamadya me matam ॥04-13-7॥
[का (kā) - who (feminine); देवरूपा (devarūpā) - having the form of a god; हृदयङ्गमा (hṛdayaṅgamā) - one who has entered the heart; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; मे (me) - to me; का (kā) - who (feminine); च (ca) - and; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; च (ca) - and; शोभना (śobhanā) - beautiful (feminine); चित्तम् (cittam) - the mind; हि (hi) - indeed; निर्मथ्य (nirmathya) - having agitated; करोति (karoti) - makes; माम् (mām) - me; वशे (vaśe) - under (its) power; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अत्र (atra) - here; औषधम् (auṣadham) - remedy; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - to me; मतम् (matam) - seems;]
(Who is she of divine form, O auspicious one, who has entered the heart? Tell me, who is she, and from where is the beautiful one? For indeed, the mind, having agitated, makes me under its power; nor does any other remedy appear to me here today.)
O auspicious lady, who is that one of divine form who has entered my heart? Tell me, who is she, and from where is that beautiful woman? For indeed, my mind, having been stirred, has brought me under its control; and today I do not see any other remedy for this. (4-13-7)
अहो तवेयं परिचारिका शुभा; प्रत्यग्ररूपा प्रतिभाति मामियम्। अयुक्तरूपं हि करोति कर्म ते; प्रशास्तु मां यच्च ममास्ति किञ्चन ॥०४-१३-८॥
aho taveyaṃ paricārikā śubhā; pratyagrarūpā pratibhāti māmiyam. ayuktarūpaṃ hi karoti karma te; praśāstu māṃ yac ca mamāsti kiñcana ॥04-13-8॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); परिचारिका (paricārikā) - attendant (female); शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; beautiful; प्रत्यग्ररूपा (pratyagrarūpā) - freshly beautiful; youthful in form; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; shines; seems; माम् (mām) - to me; इयम् (iyam) - this; अयुक्तरूपम् (ayuktarūpam) - unsuitably; not proper in form; हि (hi) - indeed; for; करोति (karoti) - does; performs; कर्म (karma) - act; deed; ते (te) - your; प्रशास्तु (praśāstu) - may he/she/it instruct; माम् (mām) - me; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - of me; my; अस्ति (asti) - is; exists; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; something;]
(Indeed, your this attendant, auspicious, freshly beautiful, appears to me this. Unsuitable indeed performs your act; may instruct me whatever and of me is anything.)
Indeed, this beautiful attendant of yours, who appears to me as freshly beautiful, is acting unsuitably; let whoever is in charge instruct me, and let them have whatever of mine there is. (04-13-8)
प्रभूतनागाश्वरथं महाधनं; समृद्धियुक्तं बहुपानभोजनम्। मनोहरं काञ्चनचित्रभूषणं; गृहं महच्छोभयतामियं मम ॥०४-१३-९॥
prabhūtanāgāśvarathaṃ mahādhanaṃ; samṛddhiyuktaṃ bahupānabhojanam। manoharaṃ kāñcanacitraprabhūṣaṇaṃ; gṛhaṃ mahacchobhayatāmiyaṃ mama ॥04-13-9॥
[प्रभूतनागाश्वरथं (prabhūtanāgāśvarathaṃ) - with many (prabhūta;) elephants (nāga;), horses (aśva;), and chariots (ratha;); महाधनं (mahādhanaṃ) - great wealth; समृद्धियुक्तं (samṛddhiyuktaṃ) - endowed with prosperity; बहुपानभोजनम् (bahupānabhojanam) - abounding in much drink and food; मनोहरं (manoharaṃ) - charming; काञ्चनचित्रभूषणं (kāñcanacitraprabhūṣaṇaṃ) - adorned with varied golden ornaments; गृहं (gṛham) - house; महच्छोभयताम् (mahacchobhayatām) - may greatly shine; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; मम (mama) - my;]
(With many elephants, horses, and chariots, great wealth, endowed with prosperity, abounding in much drink and food, charming, adorned with varied golden ornaments, house, may this of mine greatly shine.)
May this house of mine, with many elephants, horses, and chariots, great wealth, abounding in prosperity, plentiful drink and food, charming and adorned with varied golden ornaments, brilliantly shine. (4-13-9)
ततः सुदेष्णामनुमन्त्र्य कीचक; स्ततः समभ्येत्य नराधिपात्मजाम्। उवाच कृष्णामभिसान्त्वयंस्तदा; मृगेन्द्रकन्यामिव जम्बुको वने ॥०४-१३-१०॥
tataḥ sudeṣṇām anumāntrya kīcakaḥ; tataḥ samabhyetya narādhipātmajām। uvāca kṛṣṇām abhisantvayaṃs tadā; mṛgendrakanyām iva jambuko vane ॥04-13-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुदेष्णाम् (sudeṣṇām) - Sudeṣṇā (accusative singular); अनुमन्त्र्य (anumāntrya) - having taken leave; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka (nominative singular); स्ततः (tataḥ) - then; समभ्येत्य (samabhyetya) - having approached; नराधिपात्मजाम् (narādhipātmajām) - the daughter of the king (accusative singular); उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); अभिसान्त्वयन् (abhisantvayan) - soothing; तदा (tadā) - then; मृगेन्द्रकन्याम् (mṛgendrakanyām) - daughter of the lion; इव (iva) - like; जम्बुकः (jambukaḥ) - a jackal; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(Then, having taken leave of Sudeṣṇā, Kīcaka then, having approached the daughter of the king, spoke to Kṛṣṇā, soothing then, like a jackal (approaching) the daughter of the lion in the forest.)
Then, after taking leave of Sudeṣṇā, Kīcaka approached the king's daughter, and began to speak soothingly to Kṛṣṇā, just like a jackal tries to soothe the lion's daughter in the forest. (04-13-10)
इदं च रूपं प्रथमं च ते वयो; निरर्थकं केवलमद्य भामिनि। अधार्यमाणा स्रगिवोत्तमा यथा; न शोभसे सुन्दरि शोभना सती ॥०४-१३-११॥
idaṃ ca rūpaṃ prathamaṃ ca te vayo; nirarthakaṃ kevalam adya bhāmini. adhāryamāṇā srag iva uttamā yathā; na śobhase sundari śobhanā satī ॥04-13-11॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; प्रथमं (prathamaṃ) - first; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; वयः (vayaḥ) - youth; निरर्थकं (nirarthakaṃ) - meaningless; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; अद्य (adya) - now; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O proud lady; अधार्यमाणा (adhāryamāṇā) - not being worn; स्रक् (srak) - garland; इव (iva) - like; उत्तमा (uttamā) - excellent; यथा (yathā) - just as; न (na) - not; शोभसे (śobhase) - you appear; सुन्दरि (sundari) - O beautiful one; शोभना (śobhanā) - charming; सती (satī) - being; ॥०४-१३-११॥ (॥04-13-11॥) - ;]
(This form and your youth only now, O proud lady, are meaningless; not being worn, like an excellent garland, just as, O beautiful one, though being charming, you do not appear.)

त्यजामि दारान्मम ये पुरातना; भवन्तु दास्यस्तव चारुहासिनि। अहं च ते सुन्दरि दासवत्स्थितः; सदा भविष्ये वशगो वरानने ॥०४-१३-१२॥
tyajāmi dārān mama ye purātanā; bhavantu dāsyas tava cāruhāsini. ahaṃ ca te sundari dāsavat sthitaḥ; sadā bhaviṣye vaśago varānane ॥04-13-12॥
[त्यजामि (tyajāmi) - I abandon; दारान् (dārān) - wives; मम (mama) - my; ये (ye) - who; पुरातना (purātanā) - old; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - let them be; दास्यः (dāsyas) - maidservants; तव (tava) - your; चारुहासिनि (cāruhāsini) - O charming-smiling one; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; सुन्दरि (sundari) - O beautiful one; दासवत् (dāsavat) - like a servant; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated; सदा (sadā) - always; भविष्ये (bhaviṣye) - I will be; वशगः (vaśagaḥ) - under control; वरानने (varānane) - O lovely-faced one;]
(I abandon wives my who are old; let be maidservants your, O charming-smiling one. I and your, O beautiful one, like a servant situated; always I will be under control, O lovely-faced one.)
I abandon those old wives of mine; let them become your maidservants, O charming-smiling one. I too, O beautiful one, will remain like your servant, always under your control, O lovely-faced one. (04-13-12)

अप्रार्थनीयामिह मां सूतपुत्राभिमन्यसे। विहीनवर्णां सैरन्ध्रीं बीभत्सां केशकारिकाम् ॥०४-१३-१३॥
aprārthanīyām iha māṃ sūtaputrābhimanyase। vihīnavarṇāṃ sairandhrīṃ bībhtsāṃ keśakārikām ॥04-13-13॥
[अप्रार्थनीयाम् (aprārthanīyām) - not-to-be-requested; undesirable; (object not fit to be asked for); इह (iha) - here; in this matter; माम् (mām) - me; सूतपुत्र (sūtaputra) - son of a charioteer (Karna); अभिमन्यसे (abhimanyase) - you consider; you suppose; विहीनवर्णाम् (vihīnavarṇām) - deprived of color; discolored; pale; सैरन्ध्रीम् (sairandhrīm) - the hairdresser (Sairandhrī, Draupadī in disguise); बीभत्साम् (bībhtsām) - horrible; terrifying; dreadful; केशकारिकाम् (keśakārikām) - hairdresser; one who arranges hair;]
(Not-to-be-requested here me, son of a charioteer, you consider—deprived of color, Sairandhrī, dreadful, hairdresser.)
O son of a charioteer, you consider me here as someone not to be sought after—a discolored, dreadful hairdresser Sairandhrī. (04-13-13)
परदारास्मि भद्रं ते न युक्तं त्वयि साम्प्रतम्। दयिताः प्राणिनां दारा धर्मं समनुचिन्तय ॥०४-१३-१४॥
paradārāsmi bhadraṃ te na yuktaṃ tvayi sāmpratam। dayitāḥ prāṇināṃ dārā dharmaṃ samanucintaya॥04-13-14॥
[परदारा (paradārā) - another’s wife; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - blessing; ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - befitting; त्वयि (tvayi) - for you; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; दयिताः (dayitāḥ) - beloved; प्राणिनां (prāṇināṃ) - of living beings; दारा (dārā) - wife; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; समनुचिन्तय (samanucintaya) - think well upon;]
(I am another's wife. Blessing to you. Not befitting for you at present. Beloved are the wives of living beings. Consider righteousness.)
I am another man's wife. Blessings to you. What you are doing is not proper for you now. Wives are dear to all living beings—reflect upon your duty. (04-13-14)
परदारे न ते बुद्धिर्जातु कार्या कथञ्चन। विवर्जनं ह्यकार्याणामेतत्सत्पुरुषव्रतम् ॥०४-१३-१५॥
paradāre na te buddhiḥ jātu kāryā kathañcana। vivarjanaṃ hy akāryāṇām etat satpuruṣavratam ॥04-13-15॥
[परदारे (paradāre) - in another's wife; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intention; जातु (jātu) - ever; कार्या (kāryā) - should be made; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; विवर्जनं (vivarjanam) - renunciation; हि (hi) - indeed; अकार्याणाम् (akāryāṇām) - of improper acts; एतत् (etat) - this; सत्पुरुषव्रतम् (satpuruṣavratam) - vow of a noble person;]
(In another's wife, not your intention ever should be made in any way. Renunciation indeed of improper acts—this is the vow of a noble person.)
Your mind should never, in any way, be set upon another's wife. Indeed, abstaining from improper actions—this is the vow of a noble person. (04-13-15)
मिथ्याभिगृध्नो हि नरः पापात्मा मोहमास्थितः। अयशः प्राप्नुयाद्घोरं सुमहत्प्राप्नुयाद्भयम् ॥०४-१३-१६॥
mithyābhigṛdhno hi naraḥ pāpātmā mohamāsthitaḥ। ayaśaḥ prāpnuyād ghoram sumahat prāpnuyād bhayam ॥04-13-16॥
[मिथ्या-अभिगृध्नः (mithyā-abhigṛdhnaḥ) - wrongly-desiring (one); हि (hi) - indeed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - evil-souled; मोहम्-आस्थितः (moham-āsthitaḥ) - deluded (one having resorted to confusion); अयशः (ayaśaḥ) - disgrace; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may attain; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(Wrongly-desiring indeed man evil-souled having resorted to confusion disgrace may obtain terrible, very great may attain fear.)
Indeed, a man who is evil-souled, wrongly covetous, and deluded, may obtain terrible disgrace and may encounter very great fear. (04-13-16)
मा सूतपुत्र हृष्यस्व माद्य त्यक्ष्यसि जीवितम्। दुर्लभामभिमन्वानो मां वीरैरभिरक्षिताम् ॥०४-१३-१७॥
mā sūtaputra hṛṣyasva mādy tyakṣyasi jīvitam। durlabhām abhimanvānaḥ mām vīraiḥ abhirakṣitām॥04-13-17॥
[मा (mā) - do not; सूतपुत्र (sūtaputra) - O son of Sūta; हृष्यस्व (hṛṣyasva) - rejoice; माद्य (mādya) - exult; त्यक्ष्यसि (tyakṣyasi) - you will give up; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; दुर्लभाम् (durlabhām) - difficult to obtain; अभिमन्वानः (abhimanvānaḥ) - thinking of acquiring; माम् (mām) - me; वीरैः (vīraiḥ) - by heroes; अभिरक्षिताम् (abhirakṣitām) - protected;]
(Do not, O son of Sūta, rejoice, do not exult, you will give up life. Thinking of acquiring me—protected by heroes, difficult to obtain.)
Do not, O Sūta’s son, exult or rejoice—you will lose your life, seeking to obtain me who am protected by heroes and hard to win. (04-13-17)
न चाप्यहं त्वया शक्या गन्धर्वाः पतयो मम। ते त्वां निहन्युः कुपिताः साध्वलं मा व्यनीनशः ॥०४-१३-१८॥
na cāpyahaṃ tvayā śakyā gandharvāḥ patayo mama। te tvāṃ nihanyuḥ kupitāḥ sādhu-alam mā vyanīnaśaḥ॥04-13-18॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - capable (to be conquered/overpowered); गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; पतयः (patayaḥ) - lords; मम (mama) - my; ते (te) - they; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; निहन्युः (nihanyuḥ) - would slay; कुपिताः (kupitāḥ) - angry; साध्वलम् (sādhvalam) - rightly; मा (mā) - do not; व्यनीनशः (vyanīnaśaḥ) - destroy;]
(Not and also I by you capable Gandharvas lords my. They you would slay angry rightly do not destroy.)
Nor indeed am I, nor are the Gandharvas—my lords—able to be overpowered by you. They, angry, would kill you; do not bring about ruin rightly. (04-13-18)
अशक्यरूपैः पुरुषैरध्वानं गन्तुमिच्छसि। यथा निश्चेतनो बालः कूलस्थः कूलमुत्तरम् ॥ तर्तुमिच्छति मन्दात्मा तथा त्वं कर्तुमिच्छसि ॥०४-१३-१९॥
aśakyarūpaiḥ puruṣair adhvānaṃ gantum icchasi। yathā niścetano bālaḥ kūlasthaḥ kūlam uttaram ॥ tartum icchati mandātmā tathā tvaṃ kartum icchasi ॥04-13-19॥
[अशक्यरूपैः (aśakyarūpaiḥ) - with impossible-formed;, पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men;, अध्वानं (adhvānam) - path;, गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go;, इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;, यथा (yathā) - just as;, निश्चेतनः (niścetanaḥ) - unconscious;, बालः (bālaḥ) - child;, कूलस्थः (kūlasthaḥ) - standing on the bank;, कूलम् (kūlam) - bank;, उत्तरम् (uttaram) - other side;, तर्तुम् (tartum) - to cross;, इच्छति (icchati) - wishes;, मन्दात्मा (mandātmā) - dull-minded one;, तथा (tathā) - so;, त्वं (tvaṃ) - you;, कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do;, इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(You wish to go the path by men of impossible-formed; just as an unconscious child standing on the bank wishes to cross to the other side of the bank, so the dull-minded one wishes to cross; thus you wish to do.)
You wish to follow a path that is impossible for men, just as an unconscious child standing on the bank wishes to cross to the other side; likewise, as a dull-minded person wishes to cross, so you wish to act. (04-13-19)
अन्तर्महीं वा यदि वोर्ध्वमुत्पतेः; समुद्रपारं यदि वा प्रधावसि। तथापि तेषां न विमोक्षमर्हसि; प्रमाथिनो देवसुता हि मे वराः ॥०४-१३-२०॥
antarmahīṃ vā yadi vordhvamutpateḥ; samudrapāraṃ yadi vā pradhāvasi. tathāpi teṣāṃ na vimokṣamarhasi; pramāthino devasūtā hi me varāḥ॥04-13-20॥
[अन्तर्महीं (antarmahīṃ) - into the earth; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upward; उत्पतेः (utpateḥ) - you fly; समुद्रपारं (samudrapāram) - to the far shore of the ocean; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; प्रधावसि (pradhāvasi) - you run; तथापि (tathāpi) - even then; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; न (na) - not; विमोक्षम् (vimokṣam) - release; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you deserve; प्रमाथिनः (pramāthinaḥ) - violent ones; देवसुता (devasutā) - divine sons; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; वराः (varāḥ) - boons;]
(Into the earth or if upward you fly; to the far shore of the ocean if or you run. Even then of them not release you deserve; violent ones, divine sons indeed my boons.)
Whether you enter the earth or fly upward, or run to the other side of the ocean, still you do not deserve release from them; for the violent ones, the divine sons, are indeed my boons. (04-13-20)
त्वं कालरात्रीमिव कश्चिदातुरः; किं मां दृढं प्रार्थयसेऽद्य कीचक। किं मातुरङ्के शयितो यथा शिशु; श्चन्द्रं जिघृक्षुरिव मन्यसे हि माम् ॥०४-१३-२१॥
tvaṃ kālarātrīm iva kaścid āturaḥ; kiṃ māṃ dṛḍhaṃ prārthayase'dya kīcaka. kiṃ mātur aṅke śayito yathā śiśuḥ; candram jighṛkṣur iva manyase hi mām ॥04-13-21॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कालरात्रिम् (kālarātrīm) - Kālarātrī (night of destruction); इव (iva) - like; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some (person); आतुरः (āturaḥ) - afflicted; किं (kiṃ) - why; माम् (mām) - me; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; प्रार्थयसि (prārthayasi) - do you desire; अद्य (adya) - today; कीचक (kīcaka) - Kīcaka; किं (kiṃ) - why; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of mother; अङ्के (aṅke) - in the lap; शयितः (śayitaḥ) - reposing; यथा (yathā) - as, like; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - child; चन्द्रम् (candram) - the moon; जिघृक्षुः (jighṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to seize; इव (iva) - like; मन्यसे (manyase) - do you think; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me;]
(You, like Kālarātrī, some afflicted person; why me firmly do you desire today, Kīcaka? Why, as a child reposing in the mother's lap, desiring to seize the moon, do you indeed think of me? (04-13-21))
Why do you, like some troubled person haunted by Kālarātrī, so persistently crave me today, Kīcaka? Why do you, like a child lying in its mother's lap who thinks to grasp the moon, imagine you can have me? (04-13-21)
