वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said;
प्रत्याख्यातो राजपुत्र्या सुदेष्णां कीचकोऽब्रवीत्। अमर्यादेन कामेन घोरेणाभिपरिप्लुतः ॥०४-१४-१॥
After being rejected by the princess, Kīcaka, overwhelmed by unrestrained and violent desire, spoke to Sudeṣṇā. (04-14-1)
यथा कैकेयि सैरन्ध्र्या समेयां तद्विधीयताम्। तां सुदेष्णे परीप्सस्व माहं प्राणान्प्रहासिषम् ॥०४-१४-२॥
O Kaikeyi, just as I may meet Sairandhri, let that be arranged. O Sudeṣṇā, seek to bring her; let me not lose my life. (04-14-2)
तस्य तां बहुशः श्रुत्वा वाचं विलपतस्तदा। विराटमहिषी देवी कृपां चक्रे मनस्विनी ॥०४-१४-३॥
When she, the noble-minded queen of Virāṭ, had repeatedly heard his lamenting words, the lady felt compassion. (04-14-3)
स्वमर्थमभिसन्धाय तस्यार्थमनुचिन्त्य च। उद्वेगं चैव कृष्णायाः सुदेष्णा सूतमब्रवीत् ॥०४-१४-४॥
Sudeṣṇā, having considered her own purpose, thought of his purpose and also the distress of Kṛṣṇā, spoke to the charioteer. (04-14-4)
पर्विणीं त्वं समुद्दिष्य सुरामन्नं च कारय। तत्रैनां प्रेषयिष्यामि सुराहारीं तवान्तिकम् ॥०४-१४-५॥
For the festival, you have liquor and food prepared; I will send this liquor-consuming woman to your presence there. (04-14-5)
तत्र सम्प्रेषितामेनां विजने निरवग्रहाम्। सान्त्वयेथा यथाकामं सान्त्व्यमाना रमेद्यदि ॥०४-१४-६॥
There, having sent her to a solitary place without restraint, you should console her as she desires; if, being consoled, she may be pleased. (04-14-6)
कीचकस्तु गृहं गत्वा भगिन्या वचनात्तदा। सुरामाहारयामास राजार्हां सुपरिस्रुताम् ॥०४-१४-७॥
But Kīcaka went to the house and, at his sister's request, brought liquor that was fit for a king and excellently purified. (04-14-7)
आजौरभ्रं च सुभृशं बहूंश्चोच्चावचान्मृगान्। कारयामास कुशलैरन्नपानं सुशोभनम् ॥०४-१४-८॥
He had excellent food and drink prepared by skilled persons from goats, sheep, and many other kinds of animals, both great and small. (04-14-8)
तस्मिन्कृते तदा देवी कीचकेनोपमन्त्रिता। सुदेष्णा प्रेषयामास सैरन्ध्रीं कीचकालयम् ॥०४-१४-९॥
When that had been done, then the queen, Sudeshna, after being approached by Kīcaka, sent Sairandhri to Kīcaka's house. (04-14-9)
सुदेष्णोवाच॥
Sudeṣṇa said.
उत्तिष्ठ गच्छ सैरन्ध्रि कीचकस्य निवेशनम्। पानमानय कल्याणि पिपासा मां प्रबाधते ॥०४-१४-१०॥
Arise and go, Sairandhri, to Kīcaka's chamber. O auspicious one, bring a drink, for I am tormented by thirst. (04-14-10)
द्रौपद्युवाच॥
Draupadī said.
न गच्छेयमहं तस्य राजपुत्रि निवेशनम्। त्वमेव राज्ञि जानासि यथा स निरपत्रपः ॥०४-१४-११॥
O princess, I should not go to his residence. O queen, you alone know how shameless he is. (04-14-11)
न चाहमनवद्याङ्गि तव वेश्मनि भामिनि। कामवृत्ता भविष्यामि पतीनां व्यभिचारिणी ॥०४-१४-१२॥
O flawless-limbed and radiant one, I will not, in your house, become an unfaithful wife to my husband by engaging in passions. (04-14-12)
त्वं चैव देवि जानासि यथा स समयः कृतः। प्रविशन्त्या मया पूर्वं तव वेश्मनि भामिनि ॥०४-१४-१३॥
You, O goddess, indeed know how that agreement was made when I previously entered your house, O beautiful one. (04-14-13)
कीचकश्च सुकेशान्ते मूढो मदनदर्पितः। सोऽवमंस्यति मां दृष्ट्वा न यास्ये तत्र शोभने ॥०४-१४-१४॥
Kīcaka, deluded and intoxicated by the pride of passion at Sukeśānta, will despise me when he sees me. Therefore, O beautiful one, I will not go there. (04-14-14)
सन्ति बह्व्यस्तव प्रेष्या राजपुत्रि वशानुगाः। अन्यां प्रेषय भद्रं ते स हि मामवमंस्यते ॥०४-१४-१५॥
O princess, you have many obedient female attendants; send another one, for he will indeed think less of me. (04-14-15)
सुदेष्णोवाच॥
Sudeṣṇa said.
नैव त्वां जातु हिंस्यात्स इतः सम्प्रेषितां मया। वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said: "He whom I have sent from here will never harm you."
इत्यस्याः प्रददौ कांस्यं सपिधानं हिरण्मयम्। सा शङ्कमाना रुदती दैवं शरणमीयुषी ॥०४-१४-१७॥
Thus he gave her a golden bronze vessel with a lid. She, suspecting and weeping, sought refuge in the divine. (04-14-17)
प्रातिष्ठत सुराहारी कीचकस्य निवेशनम् ॥०४-१४-१७॥
The liquor-drinker set out towards the residence of Kīcaka. (04-14-17)
द्रौपद्युवाच॥
Draupadī said.
यथाहमन्यं पाण्डुभ्यो नाभिजानामि कञ्चन। तेन सत्येन मां प्राप्तां कीचको मा वशे कृथाः ॥०४-१४-१८॥
As I know no one other than the Pāṇḍavas, by that truth, O Kīcaka, do not bring me under your control. (04-14-18)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
उपातिष्ठत सा सूर्यं मुहूर्तमबला ततः। स तस्यास्तनुमध्यायाः सर्वं सूर्योऽवबुद्धवान् ॥०४-१४-१९॥
The weak woman approached the Sun for a moment; then the Sun understood everything about the slender-waisted woman. (04-14-19)
अन्तर्हितं ततस्तस्या रक्षो रक्षार्थमादिशत्। तच्चैनां नाजहात्तत्र सर्वावस्थास्वनिन्दिताम् ॥०४-१४-२०॥
Then that Rakshasa, having become invisible, ordered protection for her. And he did not abandon her, the blameless one, in any situation there. (04-14-20)
तां मृगीमिव वित्रस्तां दृष्ट्वा कृष्णां समीपगाम्। उदतिष्ठन्मुदा सूतो नावं लब्ध्वेव पारगः ॥०४-१४-२१॥
When he saw Kṛṣṇā approaching, terrified like a frightened doe, the charioteer joyfully rose up, as if someone wishing to cross over had found a boat. (04-14-21)
