तथा भद्रे करिष्यामि यथा त्वं भीरु भाषसे। अद्य तं सूदयिष्यामि कीचकं सहबान्धवम् ॥०४-२१-१॥
tathā bhadre kariṣyāmi yathā tvaṃ bhīru bhāṣase। adya taṃ sūdayiṣyāmi kīcakaṃ sahabāndhavam ॥04-21-1॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in that manner; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; O kind lady; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भीरु (bhīru) - O timid one; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak; you say; अद्य (adya) - today; तं (taṃ) - him; सूदयिष्यामि (sūdayiṣyāmi) - I shall kill; I will cause to perish; कीचकं (kīcakaṃ) - Kīcaka; सहबान्धवम् (sahabāndhavam) - with (his) relatives;]
(Thus, O auspicious one, I shall do as you, O timid one, speak. Today, I shall kill him, Kīcaka, together with (his) relatives.)
So, O gentle lady, I will act just as you, O timid one, say. Today, I will kill Kīcaka with his relatives. (04-21-1)
अस्याः प्रदोषे शर्वर्याः कुरुष्वानेन सङ्गमम्। दुःखं शोकं च निर्धूय याज्ञसेनि शुचिस्मिते ॥०४-२१-२॥
asyāḥ pradoṣe śarvaryāḥ kuruṣvānena saṅgamam। duḥkhaṃ śokaṃ ca nirdhūya yājñaseni śucismite ॥04-21-2॥
[अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of this (night); प्रदोषे (pradoṣe) - at the evening; शर्वर्याः (śarvaryāḥ) - of the night; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - you should do; अनेन (anena) - with this; सङ्गमम् (saṅgamam) - union; दुःखं (duḥkham) - sorrow; शोकं (śokam) - grief; च (ca) - and; निर्धूय (nirdhūya) - having cast off; याज्ञसेनि (yājñaseni) - O daughter of Yajñasena; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiled one;]
(O daughter of Yajñasena, O pure-smiled one, having cast off sorrow and grief, in the evening of this night, with this (person), you should make union.)
O daughter of Yajñasena, O pure-smiled maiden, cast off your sorrow and grief, and unite with him this very evening of the night. (04-21-2)
यैषा नर्तनशाला वै मत्स्यराजेन कारिता। दिवात्र कन्या नृत्यन्ति रात्रौ यान्ति यथागृहम् ॥०४-२१-३॥
yaiṣā nartanaśālā vai matsyarājena kāritā। divātra kanyā nṛtyanti rātrau yānti yathāgṛham ॥04-21-3॥
[यैषा (yaiṣā) - this; (feminine nominative singular); नर्तनशाला (nartanaśālā) - dance-hall; वै (vai) - indeed; मत्स्यराजेन (matsyarājena) - by King Matsya; कारिता (kāritā) - caused to be made; दिवा (divā) - by day; अत्र (atra) - here; कन्या (kanyā) - girls; maidens; नृत्यन्ति (nṛtyanti) - they dance; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; यान्ति (yānti) - they go; यथा (yathā) - as; गृहम् (gṛham) - home;]
(This dance-hall indeed by King Matsya was caused to be made. By day here girls dance, at night they go as (to their) home.)
This dance-hall was indeed constructed by King Matsya. By day, girls dance here; at night, they go to their respective homes. (04-21-3)
तत्रास्ति शयनं भीरु दृढाङ्गं सुप्रतिष्ठितम्। तत्रास्य दर्शयिष्यामि पूर्वप्रेतान्पितामहान् ॥०४-२१-४॥
tatrāsti śayanaṃ bhīru dṛḍhāṅgaṃ supratiṣṭhitam। tatrāsya darśayiṣyāmi pūrvapretānpitāmahān ॥04-21-4॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अस्ति (asti) - is; शयनम् (śayanam) - couch; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; दृढाङ्गम् (dṛḍhāṅgam) - firm of body; सुप्रतिष्ठितम् (supratiṣṭhitam) - well-established; तत्र (tatra) - there; अस्य (asya) - of him; दर्शयिष्यामि (darśayiṣyāmi) - I shall show; पूर्वप्रेतान् (pūrvapretān) - ancestors deceased before; पितामहान् (pitāmahān) - grandfathers;]
(There is a couch, timid one, firm of body, well-established. There I shall show his ancestors deceased before, grandfathers.)
There is, O timid one, a firm and well-established couch. There I will show you his ancestors and grandfathers who have passed away. (04-21-4)
यथा च त्वां न पश्येयुः कुर्वाणां तेन संविदम्। कुर्यास्तथा त्वं कल्याणि यथा संनिहितो भवेत् ॥०४-२१-५॥
yathā ca tvāṁ na paśyeyuḥ kurvāṇāṁ tena saṁvidam। kuryāstathā tvaṁ kalyāṇi yathā saṁnihito bhavet ॥04-21-5॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; like; च (ca) - and; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; न (na) - not; पश्येयुः (paśyeyuḥ) - they might see; कुर्वाणां (kurvāṇām) - of one doing; while doing; तेन (tena) - by that; संविदम् (saṁvidam) - awareness; knowledge; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - one should do; तथा (tathā) - so; in that manner; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; O blessed woman; यथा (yathā) - as; so that; संनिहितः (saṁnihitaḥ) - approached; being near; भवेत् (bhavet) - might become; might be;]
(And as they might not see you, O auspicious one, while (you are) doing that act with awareness, so should you act so that it might be accomplished in their proximity.)
Just as they might not see you acting knowingly, O blessed one, so you should act so that even when present, they are unaware. (04-21-5)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तथा तौ कथयित्वा तु बाष्पमुत्सृज्य दुःखितौ। रात्रिशेषं तदत्युग्रं धारयामासतुर्हृदा ॥०४-२१-६॥
tathā tau kathayitvā tu bāṣpam utsṛjya duḥkhitau। rātriśeṣaṃ tad atyugraṃ dhārayāmāsatur hṛdā ॥04-21-6॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तौ (tau) - those two; कथयित्वा (kathayitvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; बाष्पम् (bāṣpam) - tears; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having released; दुःखितौ (duḥkhitau) - afflicted (with sorrow); रात्रिशेषम् (rātriśeṣam) - the rest of the night; तद् (tad) - that; अत्युग्रं (atyugram) - very intense; धारयामासतुः (dhārayāmāsatuḥ) - endured; हृदा (hṛdā) - with heart;]
(Thus those two, having spoken, but, having released tears, afflicted (with sorrow), the rest of the night, that, very intense, endured, with heart.)
Thus, after speaking, those two, having shed tears and being afflicted, endured that very intense remainder of the night with their hearts. (04-21-6)
तस्यां रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां प्रातरुत्थाय कीचकः। गत्वा राजकुलायैव द्रौपदीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥०४-२१-७॥
tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ prātarutthāya kīcakaḥ। gatvā rājakulāyaiva draupadīmidamabravīt ॥04-21-7॥
[तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in that; (locative, feminine singular); रात्र्यां (rātryāṃ) - night; (locative, feminine singular); व्यतीतायां (vyatītāyāṃ) - having passed; (locative, feminine singular participle); प्रातरुत्थाय (prātar-utthāya) - having risen in the morning; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; (proper noun, nominative, masculine singular); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; राजकुलायै (rājakulāyai) - to the royal palace; (dative, feminine singular); एव (eva) - indeed; only; द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī; (accusative, feminine singular); इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; (imperfect, 3rd person singular);]
(In that night having passed, having risen in the morning, Kīcaka, having gone indeed to the royal palace, to Draupadī, this said.)
When that night had passed and after rising in the morning, Kīcaka went to the royal palace and said this to Draupadī. (04-21-7)
सभायां पश्यतो राज्ञः पातयित्वा पदाहनम्। न चैवालभथास्त्राणमभिपन्ना बलीयसा ॥०४-२१-८॥
sabhāyāṃ paśyato rājñaḥ pātayitvā padāhanam. na caiva ālabhatha āstrāṇam abhipannā balīyasā ॥04-21-8॥
[सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while (he was) watching; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; पातयित्वा (pātayitvā) - having caused to fall; पदाहनम् (padāhanam) - footwear (sandals); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आलभथ (ālabhatha) - did (you) take up; आस्त्राणम् (āstrāṇam) - protection; अभिपन्नाः (abhipannāḥ) - overcome; बलीयसा (balīyasā) - by the stronger;]
(In the assembly, while the king was watching, having caused the sandals to fall; and you did not indeed take up protection, being overcome by the stronger.)
While the king was watching in the assembly, having been made to throw down your sandals, being overcome by the stronger, you did not even take up any protection. (04-21-8)
प्रवादेन हि मत्स्यानां राजा नाम्नायमुच्यते। अहमेव हि मत्स्यानां राजा वै वाहिनीपतिः ॥०४-२१-९॥
pravādena hi matsyānāṃ rājā nāmnā yam ucyate। aham eva hi matsyānāṃ rājā vai vāhinīpatiḥ ॥04-21-9॥
[प्रवादेन (pravādena) - by report; by rumor; हि (hi) - indeed; मत्स्यानाम् (matsyānām) - of the Matsyas; राजा (rājā) - king; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; यम् (yam) - whom; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - only; indeed; हि (hi) - indeed; मत्स्यानाम् (matsyānām) - of the Matsyas; राजा (rājā) - king; वै (vai) - truly; वाहिनीपतिः (vāhinīpatiḥ) - commander of the army;]
(By report indeed, of the Matsyas, king by name whom is called. I only indeed, of the Matsyas, king truly, commander of the army.)
It is by report that the one called the king of the Matsyas by name is spoken of; but I alone am truly the king of the Matsyas and the commander of the army. (04-21-9)
सा सुखं प्रतिपद्यस्व दासो भीरु भवामि ते। अह्नाय तव सुश्रोणि शतं निष्कान्ददाम्यहम् ॥०४-२१-१०॥
sā sukhaṃ pratipadyasva dāso bhīru bhavāmi te। ahnāya tava suśroṇi śataṃ niṣkān dadāmy aham ॥04-21-10॥
[सा (sā) - she; (that) woman; सुखं (sukham) - happiness; pleasure; प्रतिपद्यस्व (pratipadyasva) - accept; receive; दासः (dāsaḥ) - servant; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; fearful; भवामि (bhavāmi) - I become; ते (te) - for you; अह्नाय (ahnāya) - for (each) day; तव (tava) - your; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped (one); शतं (śatam) - hundred; निष्कान् (niṣkān) - gold coins; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(She happiness accept; (as) a servant, timid one, I become for you. For (each) day, your, O beautiful-hipped (one), a hundred gold coins I give, I.)
Accept happiness; I, though timid, become your servant. O beautiful-hipped one, I give you a hundred gold coins each day. (04-21-10)
दासीशतं च ते दद्यां दासानामपि चापरम्। रथं चाश्वतरीयुक्तमस्तु नौ भीरु सङ्गमः ॥०४-२१-११॥
dāsīśataṃ ca te dadyāṃ dāsānām api cāparam। rathaṃ cāśvatarīyuktam astu nau bhīru saṅgamaḥ॥04-21-11॥
[दासीशतं (dāsīśatam) - hundred maidservants; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; दद्यां (dadyām) - I would give; दासानाम् (dāsānām) - of servants; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अपरम् (aparam) - another (hundred); रथं (ratham) - chariot; च (ca) - and; अश्वतरीयुक्तम् (aśvatarīyuktam) - yoked with mules; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; नौ (nau) - for us; भीरु (bhīru) - O timid one; सङ्गमः (saṅgamaḥ) - union;]
(Hundred maidservants and to you I would give, of servants also another (hundred); chariot and yoked with mules, let there be for us, O timid one, union.)
I would give you a hundred maidservants, and another hundred male servants as well. Let us have a chariot yoked with mules, O timid one, let there be union between us. (04-21-11)
द्रौपद्युवाच॥

एकं मे समयं त्वद्य प्रतिपद्यस्व कीचक। न त्वां सखा वा भ्राता वा जानीयात्सङ्गतं मया ॥०४-२१-१२॥
ekaṃ me samayaṃ tvadya pratipadya sva kīcaka। na tvāṃ sakhā vā bhrātā vā jānīyāt saṅgataṃ mayā ॥04-21-12॥
[एकम् (ekam) - one; मे (me) - my; समयम् (samayam) - agreement; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; प्रतिपद्यस्व (pratipadya sva) - accept; कीचक (kīcaka) - Kīcaka; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; सखा (sakhā) - friend; वा (vā) - or; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; वा (vā) - or; जानीयात् (jānīyāt) - should know; सङ्गतम् (saṅgatam) - association; मया (mayā) - with me;]
(One my agreement you today accept, Kīcaka. Not you friend or brother or should know association with me.)
Kīcaka, accept one agreement of mine today: let not either friend or brother know of your association with me. (04-21-12)
अवबोधाद्धि भीतास्मि गन्धर्वाणां यशस्विनाम्। एवं मे प्रतिजानीहि ततोऽहं वशगा तव ॥०४-२१-१३॥
avabodhāddhi bhītāsmi gandharvāṇāṃ yaśasvinām। evaṃ me pratijānīhi tato'haṃ vaśagā tava ॥04-21-13॥
[अवबोधात् (avabodhāt) - from understanding; हि (hi) - indeed; भीता (bhītā) - fearful; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; यशस्विनाम् (yaśasvinām) - renowned; एवम् (evaṃ) - thus; मे (me) - to me; प्रतिजानीहि (pratijānīhi) - promise; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; वशगा (vaśagā) - under control; तव (tava) - of yours;]
(Indeed, from understanding, I am fearful of the Gandharvas, the renowned. Thus, promise to me; then I will be under your control.)
Truly, I am afraid of the renowned Gandharvas because of my understanding. Therefore, promise me this; then I shall be under your control. (04-21-13)
कीचक उवाच॥

एवमेतत्करिष्यामि यथा सुश्रोणि भाषसे। एको भद्रे गमिष्यामि शून्यमावसथं तव ॥०४-२१-१४॥
evam etat kariṣyāmi yathā suśroṇi bhāṣase। eko bhadre gamiṣyāmi śūnyam āvasathaṃ tava ॥04-21-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; यथा (yathā) - as; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped one; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; शून्यम् (śūnyam) - empty; आवसथम् (āvasatham) - dwelling; तव (tava) - your;]
(Thus this I shall do as, O beautiful-hipped one, you speak. Alone, O auspicious one, I shall go to your empty dwelling.)
I shall do exactly as you say, O beautiful-hipped one. Alone, O auspicious one, I shall go to your empty dwelling. (04-21-14)
समागमार्थं रम्भोरु त्वया मदनमोहितः। यथा त्वां नावभोत्स्यन्ति गन्धर्वाः सूर्यवर्चसः ॥०४-२१-१५॥
samāgamārthaṃ rambhoru tvayā madanamohitaḥ। yathā tvāṃ nāvabhotsyanti gandharvāḥ sūryavarcasaḥ ॥04-21-15॥
[समागमार्थं (samāgamārtham) - for the purpose of union; रम्भोरु (rambhoru) - O one with thighs like plantain stalks; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मदनमोहितः (madanamohitaḥ) - deluded by desire; यथा (yathā) - so that; त्वां (tvām) - you; न (na) - not; अवभोत्स्यन्ति (avabhotsyanti) - will recognize; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the gandharvas; सूर्यवर्चसः (sūryavarcasaḥ) - radiant as the sun;]
(For the purpose of union, O one with plantain-like thighs, by you—deluded by desire—so that you the gandharvas, radiant as the sun, will not recognize.)
O Rambhoru, for the purpose of union, you, being deluded by desire, must act so that the radiant gandharvas will not recognize you. (04-21-15)

यदिदं नर्तनागारं मत्स्यराजेन कारितम्। दिवात्र कन्या नृत्यन्ति रात्रौ यान्ति यथागृहम् ॥०४-२१-१६॥
yad idaṁ nartanāgāraṁ matsyarājena kāritam। divā atra kanyā nṛtyanti rātrau yānti yathāgṛham॥04-21-16॥
[यद् (yad) - which; इदं (idaṁ) - this; नर्तनागारं (nartanāgāraṁ) - dancing hall; मत्स्यराजेन (matsyarājena) - by the king of the Matsyas; कारितम् (kāritam) - caused to be made; दिवा (divā) - by day; अत्र (atra) - here; कन्या (kanyā) - maidens; नृत्यन्ति (nṛtyanti) - dance; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; यान्ति (yānti) - they go; यथा (yathā) - as; गृहम् (gṛham) - home;]
(Which this dancing hall by the king of the Matsyas was caused to be made. By day here maidens dance, at night they go as (to) home.)
This dancing hall was caused to be built by the King of the Matsyas. During the day, maidens dance here; at night, they go to their respective homes. (04-21-16)
तमिस्रे तत्र गच्छेथा गन्धर्वास्तन्न जानते। तत्र दोषः परिहृतो भविष्यति न संशयः ॥०४-२१-१७॥
tamistre tatra gacchethā gandharvāstan na jānate। tatra doṣaḥ parihṛto bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ॥04-21-17॥
[तमिस्रे (tamistre) - in darkness; तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छेथा (gacchethā) - you should go; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; तन् (tan) - that; न (na) - not; जानन्ते (jānante) - know; तत्र (tatra) - there; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; परिहृतः (parihṛtaḥ) - removed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(In darkness there you should go, Gandharvas do not know that. There fault removed will be, not doubt.)
You should go there in darkness; the Gandharvas will not know that. There the fault will be removed—there is no doubt. (04-21-17)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तमर्थं प्रतिजल्पन्त्याः कृष्णायाः कीचकेन ह। दिवसार्धं समभवन्मासेनैव समं नृप ॥०४-२१-१८॥
tam arthaṃ pratijalpantyāḥ kṛṣṇāyāḥ kīcakena ha। divasārdhaṃ samabhavan māsenai’va samaṃ nṛpa ॥04-21-18॥
[तमर्थं (tam arthaṃ) - that purpose; प्रतिजल्पन्त्याः (pratijalpantyāḥ) - of (her) repeatedly talking; कृष्णायाः (kṛṣṇāyāḥ) - of Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); कीचकेन (kīcakena) - by Kīcaka; ह (ha) - indeed; दिवसार्धं (divasārdham) - half a day; समभवन् (samabhavat) - became equal; मासेनैव (māsena eva) - with a month indeed; समं (samam) - equally; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(That purpose, of repeatedly talking by Kṛṣṇā, by Kīcaka indeed, half a day became equal with a month, equally, O king.)
O king, because of Kṛṣṇā’s incessant complaints to Kīcaka on that matter, half a day became as long as a whole month.
कीचकोऽथ गृहं गत्वा भृशं हर्षपरिप्लुतः। सैरन्ध्रीरूपिणं मूढो मृत्युं तं नावबुद्धवान् ॥०४-२१-१९॥
kīcako'tha gṛhaṃ gatvā bhṛśaṃ harṣapariplutaḥ. sairandhrīrūpiṇaṃ mūḍho mṛtyuṃ taṃ nāvabuddhavān ॥04-21-19॥
[कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; (proper noun); अथ (atha) - then; गृहं (gṛham) - house; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; भृशं (bhṛśam) - greatly; हर्षपरिप्लुतः (harṣapariplutaḥ) - filled with joy; (overwhelmed by happiness); सैरन्ध्रीरूपिणं (sairandhrī-rūpiṇam) - assuming the form of Sairandhrī; (having the appearance of Sairandhrī); मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded; मृत्युम् (mṛtyum) - death; तम् (tam) - him; (that); न (na) - not; अवबुद्धवान् (avabuddhavān) - understood; (perceived);]
(Kīcaka then house having gone greatly filled with joy, (of) assuming the form of Sairandhrī deluded death him not understood.)
Kīcaka, then, having gone to his house, being greatly filled with joy, did not realize that death, assuming the form of Sairandhrī, was before him. (04-21-19)
गन्धाभरणमाल्येषु व्यासक्तः स विशेषतः। अलञ्चकार सोऽऽत्मानं सत्वरः काममोहितः ॥०४-२१-२०॥
gandhābharaṇamālyeṣu vyāsaktaḥ sa viśeṣataḥ. alañcakāra so''tmānaṃ satvaraḥ kāmamohitaḥ ॥04-21-20॥

tasya tatkurvataḥ karma kālo dīrgha ivābhavat| anucintayataścāpi tāmevāyatalocanām ॥04-21-21॥

(Of him, doing that action, time became as if long; and also, while reflecting upon her only, (her) large eyes.)
For him, doing that action, time seemed to become very long; and also, as he kept thinking only of her with large eyes. (04-21-21)
आसीदभ्यधिका चास्य श्रीः श्रियं प्रमुमुक्षतः। निर्वाणकाले दीपस्य वर्तीमिव दिधक्षतः ॥०४-२१-२२॥
āsīd abhyadhikā cāsya śrīḥ śriyaṃ pramumukṣataḥ। nirvāṇakāle dīpasya vartīm iva didhakṣataḥ ॥04-21-22॥
[आसीत् (āsīt) - was; अभ्यधिका (abhyadhikā) - exceeding; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - splendor; श्रियं (śriyam) - splendor; प्रमुमुक्षतः (pramumukṣataḥ) - desiring to cast off; निर्वाणकाले (nirvāṇakāle) - at the time of extinction; दीपस्य (dīpasya) - of a lamp; वर्तीम् (vartīm) - wick; इव (iva) - like; दिधक्षतः (didhakṣataḥ) - desiring to burn;]
(There was exceeding and his splendor, wishing to cast off splendor, at the time of extinction of the lamp, like the wick desiring to burn.)
His splendor exceeded (before), and now as he was wishing to renounce it, at the time of his extinction, it was like the wick of a lamp desiring to burn just before going out. (04-21-22)
कृतसम्प्रत्ययस्तत्र कीचकः काममोहितः। नाजानाद्दिवसं यान्तं चिन्तयानः समागमम् ॥०४-२१-२३॥
kṛtasampratyayastatra kīcakaḥ kāmamohitaḥ। nājānāaddivasaṃ yāntaṃ cintayānaḥ samāgamam॥04-21-23॥

(Having become convinced there, Kīcaka, deluded by passion, not knew the day passing, thinking of union.)
There, Kīcaka, convinced and deluded by passion, did not notice the day passing as he kept thinking about the union. (04-21-23)
ततस्तु द्रौपदी गत्वा तदा भीमं महानसे। उपातिष्ठत कल्याणी कौरव्यं पतिमन्तिकात् ॥०४-२१-२४॥
tatastu draupadī gatvā tadā bhīmaṃ mahānase। upātiṣṭhata kalyāṇī kauravyaṃ patim antikāt ॥04-21-24॥

(Then but Draupadī, having gone then to Bhīma in the kitchen, stood near the auspicious woman, (her) Kaurava husband, from near.)
Then Draupadī went to Bhīma in the kitchen and the auspicious woman stood near her Kaurava husband. (04-21-24)
तमुवाच सुकेशान्ता कीचकस्य मया कृतः। सङ्गमो नर्तनागारे यथावोचः परन्तप ॥०४-२१-२५॥
tam uvāca sukeśāntā kīcakasya mayā kṛtaḥ। saṅgamaḥ nartanāgāre yathā avocaḥ parantapa ॥04-21-25॥

(To him said Sukeśāntā: "Of Kīcaka, by me the meeting has been done in the dance hall as you spoke, O scorcher of foes.")
Sukeśāntā said to him: "I have arranged the meeting with Kīcaka in the dance hall as you instructed, O scorcher of foes." (04-21-25)
शून्यं स नर्तनागारमागमिष्यति कीचकः। एको निशि महाबाहो कीचकं तं निषूदय ॥०४-२१-२६॥
śūnyaṃ sa nartanāgāram āgamiṣyati kīcakaḥ। eko niśi mahābāho kīcakaṃ taṃ niṣūdaya ॥04-21-26॥
[शून्यं (śūnyam) - empty; स (sa) - he; नर्तनागारम् (nartanāgāram) - dance hall; आगमिष्यति (āgamiṣyati) - will come; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; निशि (niśi) - at night; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; कीचकं (kīcakam) - Kīcaka (accusative); तं (tam) - him; निषूदय (niṣūdaya) - kill;]
(Empty he dance hall will come Kīcaka. Alone at night O mighty-armed, Kīcaka him kill.)
Kīcaka will come alone to the empty dance hall at night. O mighty-armed one, kill him, Kīcaka. (04-21-26)
तं सूतपुत्रं कौन्तेय कीचकं मददर्पितम्। गत्वा त्वं नर्तनागारं निर्जीवं कुरु पाण्डव ॥०४-२१-२७॥
taṃ sūtaputraṃ kaunteya kīcakaṃ madadarpitam। gatvā tvaṃ nartanāgāraṃ nirjīvaṃ kuru pāṇḍava ॥04-21-27॥

(Him, the son of the charioteer, O son of Kunti, Kīcaka, intoxicated with pride; having gone, you, to the dance hall, lifeless, make, O Pāṇḍava.)
O son of Kunti, go to the dance hall and make Kīcaka, the charioteer's son who is intoxicated with pride, lifeless, O Pāṇḍava. (04-21-27)
दर्पाच्च सूतपुत्रोऽसौ गन्धर्वानवमन्यते। तं त्वं प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठ नडं नाग इवोद्धर ॥०४-२१-२८॥
darpāc ca sūtaputro'sau gandharvān avamanyate। taṃ tvaṃ praharatāṃ śreṣṭha naḍaṃ nāga iva uddhara॥04-21-28॥
[दर्पात् (darpāt) - from pride; च (ca) - and; सूतपुत्रः (sūtaputraḥ) - charioteer's son; असौ (asau) - this; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - Gandharvas; अवमन्यते (avamanyate) - despises; तं (taṃ) - him; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रहरताम् (praharatām) - of those who strike; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; नडं (naḍam) - reed; नागः (nāgaḥ) - elephant; इव (iva) - like; उद्धर (uddhara) - uproot;]
(From pride and this charioteer's son despises the Gandharvas; him you, best of the strikers, like an elephant a reed, uproot.)
From pride, this son of the charioteer looks down on the Gandharvas; you, best among fighters, should uproot him like an elephant uproots a reed. (04-21-28)
अश्रु दुःखाभिभूताया मम मार्जस्व भारत। आत्मनश्चैव भद्रं ते कुरु मानं कुलस्य च ॥०४-२१-२९॥
aśru duḥkhābhibhūtāyā mama mārjasva bhārata। ātmanaś caiva bhadraṃ te kuru mānaṃ kulasya ca॥04-21-29॥

(O Bhārata, wipe my tears, overcome by sorrow. Indeed, for your own well-being, do honor to yourself and also to the family.)
O Bhārata, wipe away my sorrowful tears. For your own good, honor yourself and your family as well. (04-21-29)

(Welcome to you, O beautiful-hipped one, that which dear you make known to me. Not indeed for this do I wish any help, O fair-complexioned lady.)
Welcome to you, O beautiful-hipped one; whatever dear thing you make known to me is welcome. In truth, O fair-complexioned lady, I do not desire any help in this matter. (04-21-30)
या मे प्रीतिस्त्वयाख्याता कीचकस्य समागमे। हत्वा हिडिम्बं सा प्रीतिर्ममासीद्वरवर्णिनि ॥०४-२१-३१॥
yā me prītis tvayākhyātā kīcakasya samāgame। hatvā hiḍimbaṃ sā prītir mamāsīd varavarṇini ॥04-21-31॥
[या (yā) - which; मे (me) - my; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - pleasure; love; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आख्याता (ākhyātā) - spoken; told; कीचकस्य (kīcakasya) - of Kīcaka; समागमे (samāgame) - in the association; meeting; हत्वा (hatvā) - after killing; हिडिम्बम् (hiḍimbam) - Hiḍimba; सा (sā) - that; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - pleasure; love; मम (mama) - my; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O fair-complexioned woman;]
(Which pleasure of mine, that was told by you in the association of Kīcaka, after killing Hiḍimba, that pleasure was mine, O fair-complexioned woman.)
The affection of mine, which you described in the presence of Kīcaka, O fair-complexioned lady, was the same as that I felt after killing Hiḍimba. (04-21-31)
सत्यं भ्रातॄंश्च धर्मं च पुरस्कृत्य ब्रवीमि ते। कीचकं निहनिष्यामि वृत्रं देवपतिर्यथा ॥०४-२१-३२॥
satyaṃ bhrātṝṃś ca dharmaṃ ca puraskṛtya bravīmi te। kīcakaṃ nihaniṣyāmi vṛtraṃ devapatir yathā ॥04-21-32॥
[सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; च (ca) - and; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed before; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you; कीचकं (kīcakaṃ) - Kīcaka; निहनिष्यामि (nihaniṣyāmi) - I shall slay; वृत्रं (vṛtram) - Vṛtra (the demon); देवपतिः (devapatiḥ) - the lord of the gods (Indra); यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Truth, brothers, and righteousness having placed before, I speak to you: Kīcaka I shall slay, (just) as the lord of the gods (Indra) (slew) Vṛtra.)
Having upheld truth, my brothers, and righteousness, I say to you: I will slay Kīcaka as Indra slew Vṛtra. (04-21-32)
तं गह्वरे प्रकाशे वा पोथयिष्यामि कीचकम्। अथ चेदवभोत्स्यन्ति हंस्ये मत्स्यानपि ध्रुवम् ॥०४-२१-३३॥
taṃ gahvare prakāśe vā pothayiṣyāmi kīcakam। atha ced avabhotsyanti haṃsye matsyān api dhruvam॥04-21-33॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; गह्वरे (gahvare) - in the cave; (or) in secret; प्रकाशे (prakāśe) - in the open; वा (vā) - or; पोथयिष्यामि (pothayiṣyāmi) - I will beat; (future of 'poth', to strike); कीचकम् (kīcakam) - Kīcaka; अथ (atha) - then; चेत् (cet) - if; अवभोत्स्यन्ति (avabhotsyanti) - they will discover; (future of 'ava-bhū', to find out); हंस्ये (haṃsye) - I will slay; (1st person future, from 'han', to kill); मत्स्यान् (matsyān) - the Matsyas; (people of the Matsya kingdom); अपि (api) - also; even; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; surely;]
(Him in the cave, in the open, or, I will beat Kīcaka. Then if they will discover, I will kill the Matsyas also certainly.)
Whether in secret or in the open, I will strike down Kīcaka. But if they find out, I will surely slay even the Matsyas. (04-21-33)
ततो दुर्योधनं हत्वा प्रतिपत्स्ये वसुन्धराम्। कामं मत्स्यमुपास्तां हि कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-२१-३४॥
tato duryodhanaṃ hatvā pratipatsye vasundharām। kāmaṃ matsyamupāstāṃ hi kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥04-21-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; प्रतिपत्स्ये (pratipatsye) - I shall obtain; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth; कामम् (kāmam) - as he wishes; मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - the Matsya (kingdom); उपास्ताम् (upāstām) - let him serve; हि (hi) - indeed; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kunti; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Then, having slain Duryodhana, I shall obtain the earth. As he wishes, indeed, let Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti, serve (the king of) the Matsyas.)
Then, after killing Duryodhana, I will gain the earth. Let Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kunti, serve in the Matsya kingdom if he so desires. (04-21-34)

[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the way; as; by which manner; न (na) - not; सन्त्यजेथाः (santyajethāḥ) - (you) would not abandon; (you) do not give up; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; वै (vai) - indeed; मत्कृते (matkṛte) - for my sake; for me; विभो (vibho) - O lord; निगूढः (nigūḍhaḥ) - hidden; in disguise; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तथा (tathā) - in that way; thus; वीर (vīra) - O hero; कीचकं (kīcakaṃ) - Kīcaka (proper noun); विनिपातय (vinipātaya) - (you) overthrow; strike down; destroy;]
(Just as you would not abandon the truth indeed for my sake, O lord, hidden you, thus, O hero, overthrow Kīcaka.)
Just as you would not give up the truth for my sake, O lord, so too, staying hidden, O hero, strike down Kīcaka. (04-21-35)

evam etat kariṣyāmi yathā tvaṃ bhīru bhāṣase. adṛśyamānas tasyādya tamasvinyām anindite ॥04-21-36॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; भीरु (bhīru) - fearful one; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - speak; अदृश्यमानः (adṛśyamānaḥ) - unseen; तस्य (tasya) - to him; आद्य (ādya) - today; तमस्विन्याम् (tamasvinyām) - in darkness; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one;]
(Thus this I will do as you fearful one speak. Unseen by him today in the darkness, O blameless one.)
I will do this just as you, O fearful one, have said. Today, O blameless one, I will remain unseen by him in the darkness. (04-21-36)
नागो बिल्वमिवाक्रम्य पोथयिष्याम्यहं शिरः। अलभ्यामिच्छतस्तस्य कीचकस्य दुरात्मनः ॥०४-२१-३७॥
nāgo bilvam ivākramya pothayiṣyāmy ahaṃ śiraḥ। alabhyām icchatas tasya kīcakasya durātmanaḥ॥04-21-37॥
[नागः (nāgaḥ) - serpent; (or) elephant; बिल्वम् (bilvam) - bael wood; (hard fruit); इव (iva) - like; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having trampled; having attacked; पोथयिष्यामि (pothayiṣyāmi) - I shall crush; अहम् (aham) - I; शिरः (śiraḥ) - the head; अलभ्याम् (alabhyām) - which cannot be gained; unattainable; इच्छत: (icchataḥ) - for desiring; तस्य (tasya) - of that; कीचकस्य (kīcakasya) - of Kīcaka; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - of evil-minded;]
(I, like a serpent trampling a bael wood, shall crush the head of that evil-minded Kīcaka who desires the unattainable.)
Like a serpent trampling a bael wood, I will crush the head of that evil-minded Kīcaka who covets the unattainable. (04-21-37)

(Bhīma then, first having gone, at night, hidden, sat down. The beast, like a lion, invisible, he waited in expectation for Kīcaka.)
Then Bhīma went first and, hiding himself at night, sat down. Like a lion unseen, the beast waited in expectation for Kīcaka. (04-21-38)
कीचकश्चाप्यलङ्कृत्य यथाकाममुपाव्रजत्। तां वेलां नर्तनागारे पाञ्चालीसङ्गमाशया ॥०४-२१-३९॥
kīcakaś cāpy alaṅkṛtya yathākāmam upāvrajat। tāṃ velāṃ nartanāgāre pāñcālīsaṅgamāśayā ॥04-21-39॥
[कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; (proper noun masculine nominative singular); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अलङ्कृत्य (alaṅkṛtya) - having adorned (himself); यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as he desired; उपाव्रजत् (upāvrajat) - approached; तां (tām) - that; वेलाम् (velām) - time; नर्तनागारे (nartanāgāre) - in the dancing-hall; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Pāñcālī (Draupadī); सङ्गम (saṅgama) - meeting; आशया (āśayā) - with the intention;]

Kīcaka, having adorned himself as he wished, also went at that time to the dancing-hall, intending to meet Pāñcālī (Draupadī). (04-21-39)
मन्यमानः स सङ्केतमागारं प्राविशच्च तम्। प्रविश्य च स तद्वेश्म तमसा संवृतं महत् ॥०४-२१-४०॥
manyamānaḥ sa saṅketam-āgāraṃ prāviśac ca tam। praviśya ca sa tad veśma tamasā saṃvṛtaṃ mahat ॥04-21-40॥

पूर्वागतं ततस्तत्र भीममप्रतिमौजसम्। एकान्तमास्थितं चैनमाससाद सुदुर्मतिः ॥०४-२१-४१॥
pūrvāgataṃ tatas tatra bhīmam apratima-ojasam। ekāntam āsthitaṃ ca enam āsasāda sudurmatiḥ ॥04-21-41॥

(Already come before, thereafter, there, Bhīma, of incomparable energy, in solitude, situated, and, him, approached, very evil-minded.)
Afterwards there, the very evil-minded one approached Bhīma, of incomparable energy, who had already arrived, and was stationed alone. (04-21-41)
शयानं शयने तत्र मृत्युं सूतः परामृशत्। जाज्वल्यमानं कोपेन कृष्णाधर्षणजेन ह ॥०४-२१-४२॥
śayānaṃ śayane tatra mṛtyuṃ sūtaḥ parāmṛśat। jājvalyamānaṃ kopena kṛṣṇādharṣaṇajena ha ॥04-21-42॥

(Lying on the bed there, to Death the charioteer touched, burning with anger born from Krishna's affront indeed.)
There, lying on the bed, the charioteer touched Death, burning with anger that arose from Krishna's insult. (04-21-42)
उपसङ्गम्य चैवैनं कीचकः काममोहितः। हर्षोन्मथितचित्तात्मा स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत ॥०४-२१-४३॥
upasaṅgamya caiva enaṃ kīcakaḥ kāmamohitaḥ| harṣonmathitacittātmā smayamāno'bhyabhāṣata ॥04-21-43॥

Kīcaka, deluded by desire and his mind agitated with joy, approached her, and smiling, he spoke to her. (04-21-43)
प्रापितं ते मया वित्तं बहुरूपमनन्तकम्। तत्सर्वं त्वां समुद्दिश्य सहसा समुपागतः ॥०४-२१-४४॥
prāpitaṃ te mayā vittaṃ bahurūpamanantakam। tatsarvaṃ tvāṃ samuddiśya sahasā samupāgataḥ ॥04-21-44॥
[प्रापितम् (prāpitaṃ) - obtained; brought; accomplished; ते (te) - by you; for you; मया (mayā) - by me; वित्तम् (vittaṃ) - wealth; property; बहुरूपम् (bahurūpam) - of many forms; अनन्तकम् (anantakam) - endless; boundless; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; whole; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; समुद्दिश्य (samuddiśya) - having in view; with reference to; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; quickly; समुपागतः (samupāgataḥ) - has come; has arrived;]
(Obtained by you by me, wealth of many forms, endless; that all, having you in view, suddenly has come.)
All the wealth of many and boundless forms that I obtained for you, having you in mind, I have suddenly brought here. (04-21-44)
नाकस्मान्मां प्रशंसन्ति सदा गृहगताः स्त्रियः। सुवासा दर्शनीयश्च नान्योऽस्ति त्वादृशः पुमान् ॥०४-२१-४५॥
na kasmān māṃ praśaṃsanti sadā gṛhagataāḥ striyaḥ। suvāsā darśanīyaś ca nānyo'sti tvādṛśaḥ pumān॥04-21-45॥
[न (na) - not; अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - without reason; माम् (mām) - me; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - praise; सदा (sadā) - always; गृहगताः (gṛhagataāḥ) - home-dwelling; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; सुवासा (suvāsā) - well-dressed; दर्शनीयः (darśanīyaḥ) - handsome; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अस्ति (asti) - exists; त्वादृशः (tvādṛśaḥ) - like you; पुमान् (pumān) - man;]
(Not without reason, me praise always home-dwelling women. Well-dressed, handsome and, no other exists like you man.)
It is not without reason that the women of the household always praise me. There is no other man like you, well-dressed and handsome. (04-21-45)

diṣṭyā tvaṃ darśanīyo'si diṣṭyātmānaṃ praśaṃsasi. īdṛśas tu tvayā sparśaḥ spṛṣṭapūrvo na karhi cit ॥04-21-46॥

(By fortune you are admirable; by fortune you praise yourself. But such a touch by you has never been touched before at any time.)
It is by good fortune that you are admirable, and by good fortune that you praise yourself. But such a touch as this has never happened previously at any time. (04-21-46)

ity uktvā taṃ mahābāhur bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ। samutpatya ca kaunteyaḥ prahasya ca narādhamam ॥ bhīmo jagrāha keśeṣu mālyavatsu sugandhiṣu ॥04-21-47॥

(Thus having spoken to him, the mighty-armed Bhīma of terrible prowess, having sprung up and having laughed at the lowest of men, Bhīma seized by the hair, adorned with garlands, fragrant.)
Having said this, Bhīma the mighty-armed, terrifying in strength, sprung up; Kuntī's son laughed at the vile man, and Bhīma seized him by his fragrant, garlanded hair. (04-21-47)
स केशेषु परामृष्टो बलेन बलिनां वरः। आक्षिप्य केशान्वेगेन बाह्वोर्जग्राह पाण्डवम् ॥०४-२१-४८॥
sa keśeṣu parāmṛṣṭo balena balināṃ varaḥ। ākṣipya keśān vegena bāhor jagrāha pāṇḍavam ॥04-21-48॥
[स (sa) - he; केशेषु (keśeṣu) - in the hair; परामृष्टः (parāmṛṣṭaḥ) - seized; बलेन (balena) - with force; बलिनां (balinām) - of the strong (men); वरः (varaḥ) - the best; आक्षिप्य (ākṣipya) - having dragged; केशान् (keśān) - the hair; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; बाह्वोः (bāhoḥ) - by the arms; जग्राह (jagrāha) - he seized; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira or a Pāṇḍava prince);]
(He (sa), in the hair (keśeṣu), seized (parāmṛṣṭaḥ) with force (balena), the best of the strong men (balināṃ varaḥ), having dragged (ākṣipya) the hair (keśān) with speed (vegena), by the arms (bāhoḥ) seized (jagrāha) the Pāṇḍava (pāṇḍavam).)
He, having seized the Pāṇḍava by the hair with force—the best among the strong men—dragged him swiftly by the hair, seizing him by the arms. (04-21-48)
बाहुयुद्धं तयोरासीत्क्रुद्धयोर्नरसिंहयोः। वसन्ते वाशिताहेतोर्बलवद्गजयोरिव ॥०४-२१-४९॥
bāhuyuddhaṁ tayor āsīt kruddhayor narasiṁhayoḥ। vasante vāśitāhetor balavad gajayor iva ॥04-21-49॥
[बाहुयुद्धं (bāhuyuddham) - arm-battle; तयोः (tayor) - of the two; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; क्रुद्धयोः (kruddhayoḥ) - of the enraged ones; नरसिंहयोः (narasiṁhayoḥ) - of the lion-men; वसन्ते (vasante) - in springtime; वाशिताहेतोर् (vāśitāhetoḥ) - for the sake of mating; बलवत् (balavat) - strong; गजयोर् (ganayoḥ) - of elephants; इव (iva) - like;]
(Arm-battle of the two was, of the enraged lion-men; in springtime, for the sake of mating, like of strong elephants.)
There was a hand-to-hand fight between the two enraged lion-like men, just like the mighty elephants (fight) for a mate in the spring. (04-21-49)
ईषदागलितं चापि क्रोधाच्चलपदं स्थितम्। कीचको बलवान्भीमं जानुभ्यामाक्षिपद्भुवि ॥०४-२१-५०॥
īṣad-āgalitaṃ cāpi krodhāc-calapadaṃ sthitam। kīcako balavān bhīmaṃ jānubhyām ākṣipad bhuvi ॥04-21-50॥
[ईषदागलितं (īṣad-āgalitam) - slightly loosened; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; चलपदं (calapadam) - with unsteady step; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; जानुभ्याम् (jānubhyām) - with (his) knees; आक्षिपत् (ākṣipat) - threw down; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Slightly loosened and also, from anger, with unsteady step standing, Kīcaka, the strong, Bhīma with (his) knees threw on the ground.)
Standing unsteadily with slightly loosened steps out of anger, the strong Kīcaka threw Bhīma to the ground with his knees. (04-21-50)
पातितो भुवि भीमस्तु कीचकेन बलीयसा। उत्पपाताथ वेगेन दण्डाहत इवोरगः ॥०४-२१-५१॥
pātito bhuvi bhīmas tu kīcakena balīyasā। utpapātātha vegena daṇḍāhata ivo 'ragaḥ ॥04-21-51॥
[पातितः (pātitaḥ) - cast down; भुवि (bhuvi) - upon the earth; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; तु (tu) - but; कीचकेन (kīcakena) - by Kichaka; बलीयसा (balīyasā) - by the stronger; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - sprang up; अथ (atha) - then; वेगेन (vegena) - with force; दण्डाहतः (daṇḍāhataḥ) - struck by a staff; इव (iva) - like; उरगः (uragaḥ) - a serpent;]
(Cast down upon the earth, Bhima but by Kichaka, by the stronger, sprang up then with force, struck by a staff like a serpent.)
Though cast to the ground by the stronger Kichaka, Bhima then sprang up forcefully, like a serpent struck by a staff. (04-21-51)
स्पर्धया च बलोन्मत्तौ तावुभौ सूतपाण्डवौ। निशीथे पर्यकर्षेतां बलिनौ निशि निर्जने ॥०४-२१-५२॥
spardhayā ca balonmattau tāvubhau sūtapāṇḍavau। niśīthe paryakarṣetāṃ balinau niśi nirjane ॥04-21-52॥
[स्पर्धया (spardhayā) - by rivalry; by competition; च (ca) - and; बलोन्मत्तौ (balonmattau) - intoxicated with strength; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; सूतपाण्डवौ (sūtapāṇḍavau) - the son of the charioteer and the son of Pāṇḍu; निशीथे (niśīthe) - at midnight; पर्यकर्षेताम् (paryakarṣetām) - drew each other around; dragged each other; बलिनौ (balinau) - the strong ones; निशि (niśi) - in the night; निर्जने (nirjane) - in solitude;]
(By rivalry and intoxicated with strength, those two, both the son of the charioteer and the son of Pāṇḍu, at midnight, the strong ones, drew each other around in the night, in solitude.)
Driven by rivalry and intoxicated with strength, both the son of the charioteer and the son of Pāṇḍu wrestled with each other at midnight, those strong men, alone in the night, in a solitary place. (04-21-52)
ततस्तद्भवनश्रेष्ठं प्राकम्पत मुहुर्मुहुः। बलवच्चापि सङ्क्रुद्धावन्योन्यं तावगर्जताम् ॥०४-२१-५३॥
tatas tad bhavana-śreṣṭhaṃ prākampata muhur muhuḥ। balavat cāpi saṅkruddhāv anyonyaṃ tāv agarjatām ॥04-21-53॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tad) - that; भवनश्रेष्ठम् (bhavana-śreṣṭham) - mansion-best; the excellent mansion; प्राकम्पत (prākampata) - quivered; मुहुर्मुहुः (muhur muhuḥ) - again and again; बलवत् (balavat) - with force; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सङ्क्रुद्धौ (saṅkruddhau) - mutually-enraged (dual); अन्योन्यम् (anyonyaṃ) - each other; तौ (tau) - they both; अर्जताम् (arjatām) - were roaring (dual);]
(Then that excellent mansion quivered again and again. And with force also, they both, mutually enraged, were roaring at each other.)
Then that excellent mansion shook again and again as those two, both enraged, roared fiercely at each other. (04-21-53)
तलाभ्यां तु स भीमेन वक्षस्यभिहतो बली। कीचको रोषसन्तप्तः पदान्न चलितः पदम् ॥०४-२१-५४॥
talābhyāṁ tu sa bhīmena vakṣasy abhihato balī। kīcako roṣasantaptaḥ padān na calitaḥ padam ॥04-21-54॥
[तलाभ्यां (talābhyām) - by the palms; by blows of the palm; तु (tu) - but; स (sa) - he; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhīma; वक्षसि (vakṣasi) - on the chest; अभिहतः (abhihataḥ) - struck; बली (balī) - the strong one; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; रोषसन्तप्तः (roṣasantaptaḥ) - burning with anger; पदान् (padān) - from (his) feet; न (na) - not; चलितः (calitaḥ) - moved; पदम् (padam) - a step;]
(But he, Kīcaka, the strong one, struck on the chest by Bhīma with the palms, burning with anger, did not move a step from his feet.)
But Kīcaka, strong as he was, though struck on the chest by Bhīma with the blows of his palms, burning with anger, did not move a single step from where he stood. (04-21-54)
मुहूर्तं तु स तं वेगं सहित्वा भुवि दुःसहम्। बलादहीयत तदा सूतो भीमबलार्दितः ॥०४-२१-५५॥
muhūrtaṁ tu sa taṁ vegaṁ sahitvā bhuvi duḥsaham। balādahīyata tadā sūto bhīmabalārditaḥ ॥04-21-55॥
[मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - a moment; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; तम् (tam) - that; वेगम् (vegam) - force; सहित्वा (sahitvā) - having withstood; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; दुःसहम् (duḥsaham) - unbearable; बलात् (balāt) - by force; अहीयत (ahīyata) - was overcome; तदा (tadā) - then; सूतः (sūtaḥ) - the charioteer; भीमबलार्दितः (bhīmabalārditaḥ) - afflicted by Bhīma's strength;]
(But he, having withstood that unbearable force on the earth for a moment, was overcome by force then, the charioteer afflicted by Bhīma's strength.)
But the charioteer, overpowered by Bhīma's strength, withstood that unbearable force on the ground for a moment, and then was forcibly overcome. (04-21-55)
तं हीयमानं विज्ञाय भीमसेनो महाबलः। वक्षस्यानीय वेगेन ममन्थैनं विचेतसम् ॥०४-२१-५६॥
taṃ hīyamānaṃ vijñāya bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। vakṣasyānīya vegena mamanthainaṃ vicetasam ॥04-21-56॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; हीयमानं (hīyamānaṃ) - diminishing; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having perceived; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - mighty; वक्षसि (vakṣasi) - on the chest; आनीय (ānīya) - having drawn/dragged; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; ममन्थ (mamantha) - crushed; एनं (enaṃ) - him; विचेतसम् (vicetasam) - unconscious;]
(Him diminishing having perceived, Bhīmasena mighty on the chest having dragged with speed crushed him unconscious.)
Perceiving him to be weakening, the mighty Bhīmasena dragged him swiftly onto his chest and crushed him while he was unconscious. (04-21-56)
क्रोधाविष्टो विनिःश्वस्य पुनश्चैनं वृकोदरः। जग्राह जयतां श्रेष्ठः केशेष्वेव तदा भृशम् ॥०४-२१-५७॥
krodhāviṣṭo viniḥśvasya punaś cainaṁ vṛkodaraḥ। jagrāha jayatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ keśeṣveva tadā bhṛśam ॥04-21-57॥
[क्रोधाविष्टः (krodhāviṣṭaḥ) - one possessed by anger; विनिःश्वस्य (viniḥśvasya) - having exhaled deeply; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma; lit. wolf-bellied); जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; जयताम् (jayatām) - of the victorious; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; केशेषु (keśeṣu) - in the hair; एव (eva) - just; only; तदा (tadā) - then; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - forcefully;]
(One possessed by anger, having exhaled deeply again and (then) Vṛkodara (the best of the victorious) seized him just then forcefully by the hair.)
Possessed by anger, Vṛkodara—the foremost of the victorious—exhaled deeply once more and then seized him forcefully by the hair. (04-21-57)
गृहीत्वा कीचकं भीमो विरुराव महाबलः। शार्दूलः पिशिताकाङ्क्षी गृहीत्वेव महामृगम् ॥०४-२१-५८॥
gṛhītvā kīcakaṃ bhīmo virurāva mahābalaḥ। śārdūlaḥ piśitākāṅkṣī gṛhītv-eva mahāmṛgam ॥04-21-58॥
[गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having seized; कीचकं (kīcakam) - Kīcaka; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; विरुराव (virurāva) - roared loudly; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the one of great strength; शार्दूलः (śārdūlaḥ) - tiger; पिशिताकाङ्क्षी (piśitākāṅkṣī) - desiring flesh; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having seized; इव (iva) - like; महामृगम् (mahāmṛgam) - a great animal;]
(Having seized Kīcaka, Bhīma, the one of great strength, roared loudly, just as a tiger desiring flesh, having seized a great animal.)
Bhīma, possessing great strength, seized Kīcaka and roared loudly, like a tiger longing for flesh after capturing a mighty animal. (04-21-58)
तस्य पादौ च पाणी च शिरो ग्रीवां च सर्वशः। काये प्रवेशयामास पशोरिव पिनाकधृक् ॥०४-२१-५९॥
tasya pādau ca pāṇī ca śiro grīvāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ। kāye praveśayāmāsa paśor iva pinākadhṛk ॥04-21-59॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; पादौ (pādau) - feet (dual); च (ca) - and; पाणी (pāṇī) - hands (dual); च (ca) - and; शिरो (śiraḥ) - head; ग्रीवां (grīvām) - neck; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely; काये (kāye) - in the body; प्रवेशयामास (praveśayāmāsa) - caused to enter; पशोः (paśoḥ) - of an animal; इव (iva) - like; पिनाकधृक् (pinākadhṛk) - the wielder of Pināka (Śiva);]
(Of him, the feet and the hands and the head and the neck, completely, in the body, caused to enter, like of an animal, the wielder of Pināka (Śiva).)
Śiva, the wielder of Pināka, caused all his feet, hands, head, and neck to enter completely into (his) body, just as (is done) to an animal. (04-21-59)
तं संमथितसर्वाङ्गं मांसपिण्डोपमं कृतम्। कृष्णायै दर्शयामास भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥०४-२१-६०॥
taṁ saṁmathita-sarvāṅgaṁ māṁsa-piṇḍopamaṁ kṛtam। kṛṣṇāyai darśayāmāsa bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ॥04-21-60॥

Bhīmasena of great strength, having made him with all his limbs crushed like a lump of flesh, showed him to Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī). (04-21-60)
उवाच च महातेजा द्रौपदीं पाण्डुनन्दनः। पश्यैनमेहि पाञ्चालि कामुकोऽयं यथा कृतः ॥०४-२१-६१॥
uvāca ca mahātejā draupadīṃ pāṇḍunandanaḥ। paśyainamehi pāñcāli kāmuko'yaṃ yathā kṛtaḥ ॥04-21-61॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great splendor; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - to Draupadī; पाण्डुनन्दनः (pāṇḍunandanaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; पश्य (paśya) - see; एनम् (enam) - this; एहि (ehi) - come; पाञ्चालि (pāñcāli) - O daughter of the Pāñcāla; कामुकः (kāmukaḥ) - passionate one; अयम् (ayam) - this; यथा (yathā) - how; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been made;]
(And the son of Pāṇḍu of great splendor said to Draupadī: See this, come, O daughter of the Pāñcāla, how this passionate one has been made.)
The illustrious son of Pāṇḍu said to Draupadī: "Look at this, O daughter of the Pāñcāla, come here and see how this passionate one has been dealt with." (04-21-61)
तथा स कीचकं हत्वा गत्वा रोषस्य वै शमम्। आमन्त्र्य द्रौपदीं कृष्णां क्षिप्रमायान्महानसम् ॥०४-२१-६२॥
tathā sa kīcakaṃ hatvā gatvā roṣasya vai śamam। āmantrya draupadīṃ kṛṣṇāṃ kṣipram āyān mahānasam॥04-21-62॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; स (sa) - he; कीचकं (kīcakaṃ) - Kīcaka (the proper noun, accusative singular); हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; रोषस्य (roṣasya) - of anger; वै (vai) - indeed; शमम् (śamam) - calm; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadī (accusative singular); कृष्णां (kṛṣṇāṃ) - Kṛṣṇā (epithet of Draupadī, accusative singular); क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आयान् (āyān) - he went; महानसम् (mahānasam) - kitchen;]
(Thus, he, having slain Kīcaka, having gone, indeed of anger's calm, having addressed Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā), quickly went to the kitchen.)
Thus, having slain Kīcaka and after his anger subsided, he addressed Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā) and quickly went to the kitchen. (04-21-62)
कीचकं घातयित्वा तु द्रौपदी योषितां वरा। प्रहृष्टा गतसन्तापा सभापालानुवाच ह ॥०४-२१-६३॥
kīcakaṃ ghātayitvā tu draupadī yoṣitāṃ varā। prahṛṣṭā gatasantāpā sabhāpālān uvāca ha ॥04-21-63॥
[कीचकं (kīcakam) - Kīcaka; (proper noun, object); घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having caused to be killed; तु (tu) - but; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; (proper noun, subject); योषितां (yoṣitām) - among women; वरा (varā) - foremost; प्रहृष्टा (prahṛṣṭā) - gladdened; गतसन्तापा (gatasantāpā) - free from distress; सभापालान् (sabhāpālān) - to the guards of the assembly; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Kīcaka having been caused to be killed but Draupadī, foremost among women, gladdened, free from distress, to the guards of the assembly indeed said.)
But Draupadī, foremost among women, gladdened and free from distress after causing Kīcaka to be killed, indeed spoke to the guards of the assembly. (04-21-63)
कीचकोऽयं हतः शेते गन्धर्वैः पतिभिर्मम। परस्त्रीकामसंमत्तः समागच्छत पश्यत ॥०४-२१-६४॥
kīcako'yaṃ hataḥ śete gandharvaiḥ patibhir mama। parastrīkāmasaṃmattaḥ samāgacchata paśyata ॥04-21-64॥

(Kīcaka, this, slain, lies, by Gandharvas, by my husbands, my, another's wife, desire, intoxicated, approached, behold.)
This Kīcaka, infatuated with desire for another's wife, approached (me) and was slain by my husbands, the Gandharvas. Behold! (04-21-64)
तच्छ्रुत्वा भाषितं तस्या नर्तनागाररक्षिणः। सहसैव समाजग्मुरादायोल्काः सहस्रशः ॥०४-२१-६५॥
tacchrutvā bhāṣitaṃ tasyā nartanāgārarakṣiṇaḥ। sahasaiva samājagmur ādāyolkāḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥04-21-65॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भाषितं (bhāṣitam) - speech; तस्या (tasyāḥ) - her; नर्तनागाररक्षिणः (nartanāgārarakṣiṇaḥ) - the guards of the dance-hall; सहसा (sahasā) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - came together; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; उल्काः (ulkāḥ) - torches; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by the thousands;]
(That having heard speech her dance-hall guards quickly indeed came together having taken torches by the thousands.)
Having heard her words, the guards of the dance-hall quickly gathered together, each carrying torches by the thousands. (04-21-65)
ततो गत्वाथ तद्वेश्म कीचकं विनिपातितम्। गतासुं ददृशुर्भूमौ रुधिरेण समुक्षितम् ॥०४-२१-६६॥
tato gatvātha tadvēśma kīcakaṃ vinipātitam। gatāsuṃ dadṛśurbhūmau rudhirēṇa samukṣitam ॥04-21-66॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; अथ (atha) - thereafter; तद्वेश्म (tadvēśma) - that house; कीचकं (kīcakaṃ) - Kīcaka (a proper noun); विनिपातितम् (vinipātitam) - struck down; गतासुं (gatāsuṃ) - devoid of life; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; रुधिरेण (rudhirēṇa) - with blood; समुक्षितम् (samukṣitam) - besmeared;]
(Then, having gone thereafter to that house, Kīcaka, struck down, devoid of life, they saw on the ground, besmeared with blood.)
Then, after they went to that house, they saw Kīcaka, struck down lifeless, lying on the ground, all smeared with blood. (04-21-66)
क्वास्य ग्रीवा क्व चरणौ क्व पाणी क्व शिरस्तथा। इति स्म तं परीक्षन्ते गन्धर्वेण हतं तदा ॥०४-२१-६७॥
kvāsya grīvā kva caraṇau kva pāṇī kva śiras tathā। iti sma taṃ parīkṣante gandharveṇa hataṃ tadā ॥04-21-67॥
[क्व (kva) - where; अस्य (asya) - of him; ग्रीवा (grīvā) - neck; क्व (kva) - where; चरणौ (caraṇau) - feet; क्व (kva) - where; पाणी (pāṇī) - hands; क्व (kva) - where; शिरः (śiras) - head; तथा (tathā) - likewise; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - formerly; तम् (tam) - him; परीक्षन्ते (parīkṣante) - they examine; गन्धर्वेण (gandharveṇa) - by the gandharva; हतम् (hatam) - slain; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Where is his neck, where are his feet, where are his hands, where is his head likewise—thus they formerly examined him, then (who was) slain by the gandharva.)
"Where is his neck, where are his feet, where are his hands, where is his head likewise?" Thus they examined him then, the one slain by the gandharva. (04-21-67)
