धिगस्तु मे बाहुबलं गाण्डीवं फल्गुनस्य च। यत्ते रक्तौ पुरा भूत्वा पाणी कृतकिणावुभौ ॥०४-२०-१॥
dhig astu me bāhubalaṁ gāṇḍīvaṁ phalgunasya ca। yat te raktau purā bhūtvā pāṇī kṛtakiṇāv ubhau॥04-20-1॥
[धिगस्तु (dhig astu) - let there be contempt; मे (me) - my; बाहुबलं (bāhubalaṁ) - arm strength; गाण्डीवं (gāṇḍīvaṁ) - Gāṇḍīva (the bow); फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Pḥalguna (Arjuna); च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - your; रक्तौ (raktau) - blood-covered (dual); पुरा (purā) - formerly; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; पाणी (pāṇī) - hands (dual); कृतकिणौ (kṛtakiṇau) - consecrated with unguents (dual); उभौ (ubhau) - both;]
(Let there be contempt for my arm strength, for Gāṇḍīva, and for the Pḥalguna; which your two hands, formerly, having become blood-covered, both consecrated with unguents.)
Let my arm strength, Gāṇḍīva, and even Pḥalguna be despised—because formerly, your two blood-covered hands were both consecrated with unguents. (04-20-1)
सभायां स्म विराटस्य करोमि कदनं महत्। तत्र मां धर्मराजस्तु कटाक्षेण न्यवारयत् ॥ तदहं तस्य विज्ञाय स्थित एवास्मि भामिनि ॥०४-२०-२॥
sabhāyāṃ sma virāṭasya karomi kadanaṃ mahat। tatra māṃ dharmarājastu kaṭākṣeṇa nyavārayat॥ tadahaṃ tasya vijñāya sthita evāsmi bhāmini॥04-20-2॥
[सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; स्म (sma) - indeed; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; करोमि (karomi) - I do; कदनं (kadanaṃ) - slaughter; महत् (mahat) - great; तत्र (tatra) - there; माम् (mām) - me; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; तु (tu) - but; कटाक्षेण (kaṭākṣeṇa) - with a sideways glance; न्यवारयत् (nyavārayat) - restrained; तद् (tad) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; तस्य (tasya) - of him; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood (remained); एव (eva) - just; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O fair one;]
(In the assembly indeed of Virāṭa I do a great slaughter. There me Dharmarāja but with a sideways glance restrained. Then I, of him having understood, just stood am, O fair one. (04-20-2))
Indeed, in the assembly of Virāṭa, I was performing a great slaughter. There, Dharmarāja restrained me with a mere glance. Realizing this, I simply remained there, O fair one. (04-20-2)
यच्च राष्ट्रात्प्रच्यवनं कुरूणामवधश्च यः। सुयोधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेः सौबलस्य च ॥०४-२०-३॥
yac ca rāṣṭrāt prachyavanaṃ kurūṇām avadhaś ca yaḥ। suyodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ saubalasya ca॥04-20-3॥

दुःशासनस्य पापस्य यन्मया न हृतं शिरः। तन्मे दहति कल्याणि हृदि शल्यमिवार्पितम् ॥ मा धर्मं जहि सुश्रोणि क्रोधं जहि महामते ॥०४-२०-४॥
duḥśāsanasya pāpasya yanmayā na hṛtaṃ śiraḥ। tanme dahati kalyāṇi hṛdi śalyamivārpitam॥ mā dharmaṃ jahi suśroṇi krodhaṃ jahi mahāmate॥04-20-4॥

(Of Duḥśāsana, of the sinful, which by me not taken (away) head, that to me burns, O auspicious lady, in the heart, like a thorn fixed. Do not abandon righteousness, O beautiful-hipped (lady); abandon anger, O intelligent (lady). (04-20-4))
The fact that I did not take the head of sinful Duḥśāsana burns within my heart like a fixed thorn, O auspicious lady. Do not abandon righteousness, O beautiful-hipped one; give up anger, O wise one. (04-20-4)
इमं च समुपालम्भं त्वत्तो राजा युधिष्ठिरः। शृणुयाद्यदि कल्याणि कृत्स्नं जह्यात्स जीवितम् ॥०४-२०-५॥
imaṃ ca samupālaṃbhaṃ tvatto rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। śṛṇuyādyadi kalyāṇi kṛtsnaṃ jahyātsa jīvitam ॥04-20-5॥
[इमं (imaṃ) - this (accusative masculine/neuter singular); च (ca) - and; समुपालम्भं (samupālaṃbham) - reproach; admonition; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; शृणुयात् (śṛṇuyāt) - may (he) hear; यदि (yadi) - if; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious lady; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entirely; wholly; जह्यात् (jahyāt) - may (he) abandon; give up; स (sa) - he; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(And this reproach from you, the king Yudhishthira may hear, if, O auspicious lady, entirely may he abandon his life.)
If King Yudhishthira were to hear this reproach from you, O auspicious lady, he might entirely give up his life. (04-20-5)
धनञ्जयो वा सुश्रोणि यमौ वा तनुमध्यमे। लोकान्तरगतेष्वेषु नाहं शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ॥०४-२०-६॥
dhanañjayo vā suśroṇi yamau vā tanumadhyame। lokāntaragateṣveṣu nāhaṃ śakṣyāmi jīvitum ॥04-20-6॥
[धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Arjuna; (lit. 'conqueror of wealth'); वा (vā) - or; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped one; यमौ (yamau) - the two Yamās (the Ashvins, or twins); वा (vā) - or; तनुमध्यमे (tanumadhyame) - O slender-waisted (woman); लोकान्तरगतेषु (lokāntaragateṣu) - entered into other worlds; एषु (eṣu) - among these; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - am able; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live;]
(Arjuna or, O beautiful-hipped one, the two Yamās or, O slender-waisted one, among these who have entered other worlds, not I am able to live.)
O beautiful-hipped and slender-waisted one, whether it be Arjuna or the twin sons of Yama—if they have departed to other worlds, among them I am not able to live. (04-20-6)
सुकन्या नाम शार्याती भार्गवं च्यवनं वने। वल्मीकभूतं शाम्यन्तमन्वपद्यत भामिनी ॥०४-२०-७॥
sukanyā nāma śāryātī bhārgavaṁ cyavanaṁ vane। valmīka-bhūtaṁ śāmyantam anvapadyata bhāminī ॥04-20-7॥
[सुकन्या (sukanyā) - Sukanya; (a proper name); नाम (nāma) - named; called; शार्याती (śāryātī) - daughter of Śāryāti; भार्गवं (bhārgavam) - descendant of Bhṛgu; (i.e. Cyavana); च्यवनं (cyavanam) - Cyavana; (proper name); वने (vane) - in the forest; वल्मीकभूतं (valmīka-bhūtam) - become an anthill; शाम्यन्तम् (śāmyantam) - lying quietly; being calm or at rest; अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - approached; followed; भामिनी (bhāminī) - the illustrious lady; the beautiful woman;]
(Sukanya named, daughter of Śāryāti, the descendant of Bhṛgu Cyavana in the forest, who had become an anthill and was lying quietly, the illustrious lady approached.)
The illustrious lady named Sukanya, daughter of Śāryāti, approached Cyavana, the descendant of Bhṛgu, who was lying quietly in the forest, having become encased in an anthill. (04-20-7)
नाडायनी चेन्द्रसेना रूपेण यदि ते श्रुता। पतिमन्वचरद्वृद्धं पुरा वर्षसहस्रिणम् ॥०४-२०-८॥
nāḍāyanī cendrasenā rūpeṇa yadi te śrutā। patimanvacaradvṛddhaṃ purā varṣasahasriṇam ॥04-20-8॥
[नाडायनी (nāḍāyanī) - descendant of Nāḍāyana; च (ca) - and; इन्द्रसेना (indrasenā) - Indrasenā; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in the form of; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; श्रुता (śrutā) - heard; पतिम् (patim) - husband; अन्वचरत् (anvacarat) - she followed; वृद्धम् (vṛddham) - aged; पुरा (purā) - formerly; वर्षसहस्रिणम् (varṣasahasriṇam) - of a thousand years (old);]

If you have heard of Nāḍāyanī and Indrasenā, in that form, she formerly followed her aged husband who was a thousand years old. (04-20-8)
दुहिता जनकस्यापि वैदेही यदि ते श्रुता। पतिमन्वचरत्सीता महारण्यनिवासिनम् ॥०४-२०-९॥
duhitā janakasyāpi vaidehī yadi te śrutā। patimanvacarat sītā mahāraṇya-nivāsinam ॥04-20-9॥
[दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; जनकस्यापि (janakasya api) - of Janaka also; वैदेही (vaidehī) - Vaidehī; (Sītā, daughter of the king of Videha); यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - by you; श्रुता (śrutā) - has been heard; पतिम् (patim) - her husband; अन्वचरत् (anvacarat) - followed; सीता (sītā) - Sītā; महारण्यनिवासिनम् (mahāraṇya-nivāsinam) - dwelling in the great forest;]
(Daughter of Janaka also, Vaidehī, if by you has been heard; her husband followed Sītā, dwelling in the great forest.)
If you have heard of Vaidehī, the daughter of Janaka, Sītā followed her husband, who was dwelling in the great forest. (04-20-9)
रक्षसा निग्रहं प्राप्य रामस्य महिषी प्रिया। क्लिश्यमानापि सुश्रोणी राममेवान्वपद्यत ॥०४-२०-१०॥
rakṣasā nigrahaṁ prāpya rāmasya mahiṣī priyā। kliśyamānāpi suśroṇī rāmamevānvapadyata ॥04-20-10॥
[रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the demon; निग्रहं (nigrahaṁ) - oppression; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; महिषी (mahiṣī) - queen; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved; क्लिश्यमानापि (kliśyamānāpi) - although being tormented; सुश्रोणी (suśroṇī) - one with beautiful hips; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; एव (eva) - only; अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - she followed;]
(By the demon oppression having obtained, of Rāma queen beloved, although being tormented, one with beautiful hips, Rāma only she followed.)
Having suffered oppression by the demon, the beloved queen of Rāma, though tormented, with beautiful hips, followed Rāma alone. (04-20-10)
लोपामुद्रा तथा भीरु वयोरूपसमन्विता। अगस्त्यमन्वयाद्धित्वा कामान्सर्वानमानुषान् ॥०४-२०-११॥
lopāmudrā tathā bhīru vayorūpasamanvitā। agastyamanvayāddhitvā kāmānsarvān amānuṣān॥04-20-11॥
[लोपामुद्रा (lopāmudrā) - Lopamudra; तथा (tathā) - and; भीरु (bhīru) - timid; वयोरूपसमन्विता (vayorūpasamanvitā) - endowed with age and beauty; अगस्त्यम् (agastyam) - Agastya; अन्वयात् (anvayāt) - from the continuity (lineage, connection); धित्वा (dhitvā) - having abandoned; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अमानुषान् (amānuṣān) - non-human;]

यथैताः कीर्तिता नार्यो रूपवत्यः पतिव्रताः। तथा त्वमपि कल्याणि सर्वैः समुदिता गुणैः ॥०४-२०-१२॥
yathaitāḥ kīrtitā nāryo rūpavatyaḥ pativratāḥ। tathā tvam api kalyāṇi sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ॥04-20-12॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; एताः (etāḥ) - these; कीर्तिताः (kīrtitāḥ) - praised; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; रूपवत्यः (rūpavatyaḥ) - beautiful; पतिव्रताः (pativratāḥ) - devoted to their husbands; तथा (tathā) - so; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; समुदिता (samuditā) - endowed; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities;]
(Just as these praised women—beautiful, devoted to their husbands—so you also, O auspicious one, endowed with all qualities.)
Just as these renowned women, who are beautiful and devoted to their husbands, so too you, O auspicious one, are endowed with all virtues. (04-20-12)
मादीर्घं क्षम कालं त्वं मासमध्यर्धसंमितम्। पूर्णे त्रयोदशे वर्षे राज्ञो राज्ञी भविष्यसि ॥०४-२०-१३॥
mā dīrghaṃ kṣama kālaṃ tvaṃ māsa-madhy-ardha-saṃmitam। pūrṇe trayodaśe varṣe rājño rājñī bhaviṣyasi॥04-20-13॥
[मा (mā) - do not; दीर्घं (dīrghaṃ) - long (period); क्षम (kṣama) - endure; कालं (kālam) - time; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मासमध्यर्धसंमितम् (māsa-madhya-ardha-saṃmitam) - equal to one and a half months; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - when complete; त्रयोदशे (trayodaśe) - thirteenth; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; राज्ञी (rājñī) - queen; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(Do not, long, endure, time, you, equal to one and a half months. When the thirteenth year is completed, of the king, queen, you will become.)
Do not endure a long time—just a period equal to one and a half months. When the thirteenth year is completed, you will become the queen of the king. (04-20-13)

आर्तयैतन्मया भीम कृतं बाष्पविमोक्षणम्। अपारयन्त्या दुःखानि न राजानमुपालभे ॥०४-२०-१४॥
ārtayaitanmaya bhīma kṛtaṃ bāṣpavimokṣaṇam। apārayantyā duḥkhāni na rājānamupālabhe ॥04-20-14॥
[आर्तया (ārtayā) - by the distressed one; एतत् (etat) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; भीम (bhīma) - O Bhīma; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; बाष्पविमोक्षणम् (bāṣpa-vimokṣaṇam) - the shedding of tears; अपारयन्त्या (apārayantyā) - by (me) unable (to bear); दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sufferings; न (na) - not; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; उपालभे (upālabhe) - I blame;]
(By the distressed one, this, by me, O Bhīma, done, shedding of tears; by (me) unable (to bear), sufferings, not, the king, I blame.)
O Bhīma, this shedding of tears has been done by me, the distressed one; unable to endure these sufferings, I do not blame the king. (04-20-14)
विमुक्तेन व्यतीतेन भीमसेन महाबल। प्रत्युपस्थितकालस्य कार्यस्यानन्तरो भव ॥०४-२०-१५॥
vimuktena vyatītena bhīmasena mahābala। pratyupasthitakālasya kāryasyānantaro bhava ॥04-20-15॥

Let go of what has been relinquished and what has passed, O mighty Bhīmasena. Be wholly present for the task at hand in the present moment. (04-20-15)
ममेह भीम कैकेयी रूपाभिभवशङ्कया। नित्यमुद्विजते राजा कथं नेयादिमामिति ॥०४-२०-१६॥
mameha bhīma kaikeyī rūpābhibhavaśaṅkayā। nityamudvijate rājā kathaṁ neyādimāmiti ॥04-20-16॥
[मम (mama) - my; इह (iha) - here; भीम (bhīma) - terrible; कैकेयी (kaikeyī) - Kaikeyi; रूपाभिभवशङ्कया (rūpābhibhavaśaṅkayā) - with suspicion of surpassing in beauty; नित्यं (nityam) - always; उद्विजते (udvijate) - is distressed; राजा (rājā) - the king; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नयेत् (nayet) - should lead; इमाम् (imām) - this (woman); इति (iti) - thus;]
(My here terrible Kaikeyi, with suspicion of surpassing (her) beauty, always is distressed the king: 'How should (I) lead this (woman)?' thus.)
Here, on account of my terrible Kaikeyi, with the suspicion that (I) surpass her in beauty, the king is always troubled, thinking, 'How can I take this woman along?' (04-20-16)
तस्या विदित्वा तं भावं स्वयं चानृतदर्शनः। कीचकोऽयं सुदुष्टात्मा सदा प्रार्थयते हि माम् ॥०४-२०-१७॥
tasyā viditvā taṃ bhāvaṃ svayaṃ cānṛtadarśanaḥ। kīcako'yaṃ suduṣṭātmā sadā prārthayate hi mām ॥04-20-17॥
[तस्या (tasyāḥ) - her (genitive singular, feminine); विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; तं (tam) - that; भावं (bhāvam) - intention; feeling; स्वयं (svayam) - oneself; myself; च (ca) - and; अनृतदर्शनः (anṛtadarśanaḥ) - one who sees untruth; a liar; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka (proper name); अयम् (ayam) - this; सुदुष्टात्मा (suduṣṭātmā) - very wicked-minded; of very evil soul; सदा (sadā) - always; प्रार्थयते (prārthayate) - desires; solicits; हि (hi) - indeed; for; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Having known her intention, and being himself a liar, this Kīcaka, of very wicked mind, always indeed desires me.)
Having realized her feelings and being a liar himself, this Kīcaka, who is very wicked-minded, always seeks me. (04-20-17)
तमहं कुपिता भीम पुनः कोपं नियम्य च। अब्रुवं कामसंमूढमात्मानं रक्ष कीचक ॥०४-२०-१८॥
tam ahaṃ kupitā bhīma punaḥ kopaṃ niyamya ca। abruvaṃ kāmasaṃmūḍham ātmānaṃ rakṣa kīcaka ॥04-20-18॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; कुपिता (kupitā) - angered; भीम (bhīma) - O Bhima; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कोपम् (kopam) - anger; नियम्य (niyamya) - restraining; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I spoke; कामसंमूढम् (kāmasaṃmūḍham) - deluded by desire; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; रक्ष (rakṣa) - protect; कीचक (kīcaka) - O Kīcaka;]
(Him I, angered, O Bhima, again restraining anger and, I spoke, to desire-deluded myself, 'Protect (me), O Kīcaka.')
Then I, though angered, O Bhima, again restraining my anger, spoke to my desire-deluded self, 'Protect me, O Kīcaka.' (04-20-18)
गन्धर्वाणामहं भार्या पञ्चानां महिषी प्रिया। ते त्वां निहन्युर्दुर्धर्षाः शूराः साहसकारिणः ॥०४-२०-१९॥
gandharvāṇām ahaṃ bhāryā pañcānāṃ mahiṣī priyā। te tvāṃ nihanyur durdharṣāḥ śūrāḥ sāhasakāriṇaḥ॥04-20-19॥
[गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; अहम् (aham) - I; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; पञ्चानाम् (pañcānām) - of five; महिषी (mahiṣī) - queen-consort; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved; ते (te) - they; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; निहन्युः (nihanyuḥ) - would slay; दुर्धर्षाः (durdharṣāḥ) - invincible; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; साहसकारिणः (sāhasakāriṇaḥ) - doers of bold deeds;]
(Of Gandharvas I wife, of five queen-consort, beloved. They you would slay, invincible, heroes, doers of bold deeds.)
I am the wife of the Gandharvas, the beloved queen-consort of five. They, invincible, heroic and daring, would slay you. (04-20-19)
एवमुक्तः स दुष्टात्मा कीचकः प्रत्युवाच ह। नाहं बिभेमि सैरन्ध्रि गन्धर्वाणां शुचिस्मिते ॥०४-२०-२०॥
evam-uktaḥ sa duṣṭātmā kīcakaḥ pratyuvāca ha। nāhaṃ bibhemi sairandhri gandharvāṇām śucismite ॥04-20-20॥

(Thus addressed, he, the wicked-souled Kīcaka, replied indeed: "I am not afraid, O Sairandhrī, of the Gandharvas, O pure-smiled one.")
Thus, when addressed, the wicked Kīcaka replied: "I am not afraid, O Sairandhrī, of the Gandharvas, O one with a pure smile." (04-20-20)
शतं सहस्रमपि वा गन्धर्वाणामहं रणे। समागतं हनिष्यामि त्वं भीरु कुरु मे क्षणम् ॥०४-२०-२१॥
śataṃ sahasram api vā gandharvāṇām ahaṃ raṇe। samāgataṃ haniṣyāmi tvaṃ bhīru kuru me kṣaṇam ॥04-20-21॥
[शतं (śatam) - hundred; सहस्रं (sahasram) - thousand; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of Gandharvas; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; समागतं (samāgatam) - assembled; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - will slay; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भीरु (bhīru) - fearful one; कुरु (kuru) - do; मे (me) - for me; क्षणम् (kṣaṇam) - a moment;]
(Hundred, thousand even or of Gandharvas I in battle assembled will slay; you fearful one do for me a moment.)
Whether a hundred or even a thousand Gandharvas assemble in battle, I will slay them; fearful one, just give me a moment. (04-20-21)
इत्युक्ते चाब्रुवं सूतं कामातुरमहं पुनः। न त्वं प्रतिबलस्तेषां गन्धर्वाणां यशस्विनाम् ॥०४-२०-२२॥
ityukte cābruvaṃ sūtaṃ kāmāturamahaṃ punaḥ. na tvaṃ pratibalasteṣāṃ gandharvāṇāṃ yaśasvinām ॥04-20-22॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I said; सूतं (sūtaṃ) - to the charioteer; कामातुरम् (kāmāturam) - afflicted by desire; अहम् (aham) - I; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रतिबलः (pratibalaḥ) - equal in power; तेषां (teṣām) - of those; गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; यशस्विनाम् (yaśasvinām) - glorious;]
(Thus having been spoken, and I, afflicted by desire, again said to the charioteer: "You are not equal in strength to those glorious Gandharvas.")
When this had been spoken, I, overcome by desire, again said to the charioteer: "You are not a match for those glorious Gandharvas." (4-20-22)
धर्मे स्थितास्मि सततं कुलशीलसमन्विता। नेच्छामि कञ्चिद्वध्यन्तं तेन जीवसि कीचक ॥०४-२०-२३॥
dharme sthitāsmi satataṃ kulaśīlasamanvitā। necchāmi kañcidvadhyantaṃ tena jīvasi kīcaka ॥04-20-23॥
[धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; स्थितास्मि (sthitāsmi) - I am established; सततं (satataṃ) - always; कुलशीलसमन्विता (kulaśīlasamanvitā) - endowed with family virtue; नेच्छामि (necchāmi) - I do not wish; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - anyone; वध्यन्तं (vadhyantam) - being slain; तेन (tena) - by that; जीवसि (jīvasi) - you live; कीचक (kīcaka) - Kīcaka;]
(In righteousness I am established, always endowed with family virtue; I do not wish anyone to be slain, by that you live, Kīcaka.)
I always abide in righteousness and am endowed with family virtue; I do not wish anyone to be killed, and because of that, you are alive, Kīcaka. (04-20-23)
एवमुक्तः स दुष्टात्मा प्रहस्य स्वनवत्तदा। न तिष्ठति स्म सन्मार्गे न च धर्मं बुभूषति ॥०४-२०-२४॥
evam-uktaḥ sa duṣṭātmā prahasya svanavat tadā। na tiṣṭhati sma sanmārge na ca dharmaṃ bubhūṣati॥ 04-20-24॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; स (sa) - he; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-minded; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having laughed; स्वनवत् (svanavat) - loudly; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - he remained; स्म (sma) - indeed; सन्मार्गे (sanmārge) - on the right path; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; बुभूषति (bubhūṣati) - he wished to attain;]
(Thus addressed, he, the wicked-minded, after laughing loudly then, did not indeed remain on the right path, nor did he desire righteousness.)
When thus addressed, that wicked-minded one laughed aloud at that time, and did not remain on the right path, nor did he wish for righteousness. (04-20-24)
पापात्मा पापभावश्च कामरागवशानुगः। अविनीतश्च दुष्टात्मा प्रत्याख्यातः पुनः पुनः ॥ दर्शने दर्शने हन्यात्तथा जह्यां च जीवितम् ॥०४-२०-२५॥
pāpātmā pāpabhāvaś ca kāmarāgavaśānugaḥ। avinītaś ca duṣṭātmā pratyākhyātaḥ punaḥ punaḥ॥ darśane darśane hanyāt tathā jahyāñ ca jīvitam॥04-20-25॥
[पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - having a sinful soul; पापभावः (pāpabhāvaḥ) - having sinful nature; च (ca) - and; कामरागवशानुगः (kāmarāgavaśānugaḥ) - one who follows the sway of passion and desire; अविनीतः (avinītaḥ) - undisciplined; च (ca) - and; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - corrupt-minded; प्रत्याख्यातः (pratyākhyātaḥ) - rejected; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; दर्शने (darśane) - on seeing; दर्शने (darśane) - at every sight; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should kill; तथा (tathā) - thus; जह्यां (jahyām) - I would give up; च (ca) - and; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(Sinful-souled, of sinful nature, and who follows the sway of passion and desire; undisciplined and corrupt-minded, rejected again and again. On seeing, on seeing, should kill; thus, I would give up life and;)
One who is sinful in soul, of sinful nature, under the sway of passion and desire, undisciplined and corrupt-minded, repeatedly rejected—on sight, again and again, should be slain; thus, I would even give up my life. (04-20-25)
तद्धर्मे यतमानानां महान्धर्मो नशिष्यति। समयं रक्षमाणानां भार्या वो न भविष्यति ॥०४-२०-२६॥
taddharme yatamānānāṃ mahāndharmo naśiṣyati। samayaṃ rakṣamāṇānāṃ bhāryā vo na bhaviṣyati ॥04-20-26॥
[तद्धर्मे (tad-dharme) - in that duty; यतमानानां (yatamānānām) - of those striving; महान् (mahān) - great; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; न (na) - not; शिष्यति (śiṣyati) - will be destroyed; समयम् (samayam) - agreement; रक्षमाणानां (rakṣamāṇānām) - of those protecting; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; वः (vaḥ) - your; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(In that duty, of those striving, great righteousness will not be destroyed. Agreement, of those protecting, wife your not will be.)
Great righteousness will not perish among those striving to uphold that duty; as long as you are protecting the agreement, your wife will not be lost. (04-20-26)
भार्यायां रक्ष्यमाणायां प्रजा भवति रक्षिता। प्रजायां रक्ष्यमाणायामात्मा भवति रक्षितः ॥०४-२०-२७॥
bhāryāyāṃ rakṣyamāṇāyāṃ prajā bhavati rakṣitā. prajāyāṃ rakṣyamāṇāyām ātmā bhavati rakṣitaḥ ॥04-20-27॥
[भार्यायाम् (bhāryāyām) - in the wife; रक्ष्यमाणायाम् (rakṣyamāṇāyām) - who is being protected; प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; progeny; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; arises; रक्षिता (rakṣitā) - protected; प्रजायाम् (prajāyām) - in progeny; रक्ष्यमाणायाम् (rakṣyamāṇāyām) - who is being protected; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; soul; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; is; रक्षितः (rakṣitaḥ) - protected;]
(In the wife who is being protected, offspring becomes protected. In the progeny who is being protected, the self becomes protected. (04-20-27))
When the wife is protected, the offspring are protected; when the progeny is protected, the self is protected. (04-20-27)
वदतां वर्णधर्मांश्च ब्राह्मणानां हि मे श्रुतम्। क्षत्रियस्य सदा धर्मो नान्यः शत्रुनिबर्हणात् ॥०४-२०-२८॥
vadatāṃ varṇadharmāṃś ca brāhmaṇānāṃ hi me śrutam। kṣatriyasya sadā dharmo nānyaḥ śatrunibarhaṇāt ॥04-20-28॥
[वदतां (vadatām) - of those who speak; वर्णधर्मान् (varṇadharmān) - the duties of varnas; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - by me; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of the Kṣatriya; सदा (sadā) - always; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - the duty; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; शत्रुनिबर्हणात् (śatrunibarhaṇāt) - apart from destruction of enemies;]
(Of those who speak, the duties of varnas and of the Brāhmaṇas, indeed, by me, have been heard. For the Kṣatriya, always, the duty is not other than the destruction of enemies.)
I have heard from those who speak about the duties of the castes and of the Brāhmaṇas. The duty of a Kṣatriya is always solely the destruction of enemies; there is no other. (04-20-28)
पश्यतो धर्मराजस्य कीचको मां पदावधीत्। तव चैव समक्षं वै भीमसेन महाबल ॥०४-२०-२९॥
paśyato dharmarājasya kīcako māṃ padāvadhīt। tava caiva samakṣaṃ vai bhīmasena mahābala ॥04-20-29॥
[पश्यतो (paśyataḥ) - while (he) was seeing; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; मां (mām) - me; पदावधीत् (padā avadhīt) - struck (me) with (his) foot; तव (tava) - of you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समक्षं (samakṣam) - in the presence (of); वै (vai) - certainly; भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - Bhīmasena; महाबल (mahābala) - O mighty-armed;]
(While Dharmarāja was seeing, Kīcaka struck me with (his) foot; also indeed in the presence of you, O mighty-armed Bhīmasena, certainly.)
While Dharmarāja looked on, Kīcaka struck me with his foot, and this happened right in your presence, O mighty-armed Bhīmasena. (04-20-29)
त्वया ह्यहं परित्राता तस्माद्घोराज्जटासुरात्। जयद्रथं तथैव त्वमजैषीर्भ्रातृभिः सह ॥०४-२०-३०॥
tvayā hy ahaṃ paritrātā tasmād ghorāj jaṭāsurāt। jayadrathaṃ tathaiva tvam ajaiṣīr bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ॥04-20-30॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; by means of you; हि (hi) - indeed; verily; अहम् (aham) - I; परित्राता (paritrātā) - rescued; saved; one who is delivered; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; from him; घोरात् (ghorāt) - terrible; dreadful; जटासुरात् (jaṭāsurāt) - from Jaṭāsura (a proper noun, demon); जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - Jayadratha (a proper noun, person); तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; thus also; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अजैषीः (ajaiṣīḥ) - you conquered; you defeated; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - along with (your) brothers; सह (saha) - together with; with;]
(By you indeed I was rescued from that dreadful Jaṭāsura. Jayadratha, in the same way, you conquered together with your brothers.)
Indeed, by your actions I was rescued from that terrible demon Jaṭāsura. Likewise, together with your brothers, you defeated Jayadratha. (04-20-30)
जहीममपि पापं त्वं योऽयं मामवमन्यते। कीचको राजवाल्लभ्याच्छोककृन्मम भारत ॥०४-२०-३१॥
jahīmamapi pāpaṃ tvaṃ yo'yaṃ māmavamanyate। kīcako rājavāllabhyācchokakṛnmama bhārata ॥04-20-31॥
[जहि (jahi) - destroy; इमम् (imam) - this; अपि (api) - also; पापम् (pāpam) - wicked one; त्वम् (tvam) - you; यः (yaḥ) - who; 'अयम् ('ayam) - this; माम् (mām) - me; अवमन्यते (avamanyate) - despises; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; राजवाल्लभ्यात् (rājavāllabhyāt) - from the favor of the king; शोककृत् (śokakṛt) - causer of sorrow; मम (mama) - of me; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(You destroy also this wicked one who, this (person), despises me—Kīcaka, from the king's favor, causer of my sorrow, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, you destroy even this wicked Kīcaka, who despises me and, favored by the king, has become the cause of my sorrow. (04-20-31)
तमेवं कामसंमत्तं भिन्धि कुम्भमिवाश्मनि। यो निमित्तमनर्थानां बहूनां मम भारत ॥०४-२०-३२॥
tam evaṃ kāmasaṃmattaṃ bhindhi kumbham ivāśmani। yo nimittam anarthānāṃ bahūnāṃ mama bhārata॥04-20-32॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कामसंमत्तम् (kāmasaṃmattaṃ) - deluded by desire; भिन्धि (bhindhi) - break; कुम्भम् (kumbham) - a pot; इव (iva) - like; अश्मनि (aśmani) - upon a stone; यः (yaḥ) - who; निमित्तम् (nimittam) - the cause; अनर्थानाम् (anarthānām) - of misfortunes; बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - of many; मम (mama) - for me; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Him thus deluded by desire break, like a pot upon a stone, who is the cause of misfortunes many for me, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, break that one who is thus deluded by desire—who is the cause of many misfortunes for me—like a pot upon a stone. (04-20-32)
तं चेज्जीवन्तमादित्यः प्रातरभ्युदयिष्यति। विषमालोड्य पास्यामि मा कीचकवशं गमम् ॥ श्रेयो हि मरणं मह्यं भीमसेन तवाग्रतः ॥०४-२०-३३॥
taṁ cej jīvantam ādityaḥ prātar abhyudayiṣyati. viṣam āloḍya pāsyāmi mā kīcaka-vaśaṁ gamam ॥ śreyo hi maraṇaṁ mahyaṁ bhīmasena tavāgrataḥ ॥04-20-33॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; चेत् (cet) - if; जीवन्तम् (jīvantam) - living; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - the sun; प्रातः (prātaḥ) - in the morning; अभ्युदयिष्यति (abhyudayiṣyati) - will rise up; विषम् (viṣam) - poison; आलोड्य (āloḍya) - considering (or after churning, or after reflecting); पास्यामि (pāsyāmi) - I will drink; मा (mā) - not; कीचकवशम् (kīcaka-vaśam) - Kīcaka's control; गमम् (gamam) - I go; श्रेयो (śreyo) - better; हि (hi) - indeed; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; म्ह्यं (mahyam) - to me; भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - Bhīmasena; तव (tava) - in your; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - before (presence);]
(If him living the sun in the morning will rise up, poison having considered I will drink, not Kīcaka's control may I go. Better indeed death to me, Bhīmasena, in your presence.)
If he remains alive when the sun rises in the morning, I will drink poison rather than be under Kīcaka's control. For me, Bhīmasena, death before you is truly better. (04-20-33)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ity uktvā prārudat kṛṣṇā bhīmasyorah samāśritā। bhīmaś ca tāṃ pariṣvajya mahatsāntvaṃ prayujya ca॥ kīcakaṃ manasā agacchat sṛkkiṇī parisaṃlihan॥ 04-20-34॥
[इति उक्त्वा (iti uktvā) - thus having spoken; प्रारुदत् (prārudat) - wept; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; उरः (urah) - chest; समाश्रिता (samāśritā) - having taken refuge (leaned upon); भीमः च (bhīmaḥ ca) - and Bhīma; तां (tāṃ) - her; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; महत् सान्त्वं (mahat sāntvaṃ) - great consolation; प्रयुज्य च (prayujya ca) - and having applied (having given); कीचकं (kīcakam) - Kīcaka; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went (went towards; resolved to go); सृक्किणी (sṛkkiṇī) - with the corners of the mouth; परिसंलिहन् (parisaṃlihan) - licking all around;]
(Thus having spoken, Kṛṣṇā wept, having taken refuge on Bhīma's chest. And Bhīma, having embraced her and having given great consolation, went towards Kīcaka in his mind, licking with the corners of his mouth all around.)
Having said thus, Kṛṣṇā wept, leaning on Bhīma's chest. Bhīma, embracing her and offering great consolation, mentally went towards Kīcaka, licking the corners of his mouth. (04-20-34)
