tasmin kāle samāgamya sarve tatrāsya bāndhavāḥ। ruruduḥ kīcakaṃ dṛṣṭvā parivārya samantataḥ ॥04-22-1॥
[तस्मिन् काले (tasmin kāle) - at that time; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having assembled; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तत्र (tatra) - there; अस्य (asya) - his; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; रुरुदुः (ruruduḥ) - wept; कीचकं (kīcakam) - Kīcaka; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides;]
(At that time, having assembled, all his relatives there, having surrounded Kīcaka on all sides, wept, having seen (him).)
At that time, all his relatives gathered there and, surrounding Kīcaka on all sides, wept when they saw him. (04-22-1)
सर्वे संहृष्टरोमाणः सन्त्रस्ताः प्रेक्ष्य कीचकम्। तथा सर्वाङ्गसम्भुग्नं कूर्मं स्थल इवोद्धृतम् ॥०४-२२-२॥
sarve saṁhṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ santrastāḥ prekṣya kīcakam। tathā sarvāṅgasaṁbhugnaṁ kūrmaṁ sthala ivo-ddhṛtam ॥04-22-2॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; संहृष्टरोमाणः (saṁhṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ) - with hairs standing on end; सन्त्रस्ताः (santrastāḥ) - frightened; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; कीचकम् (kīcakam) - Kiicaka; तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्वाङ्गसम्भुग्नं (sarvāṅgasaṁbhugnam) - with whole body contracted; कूर्मं (kūrmaṁ) - tortoise; स्थल (sthala) - on the ground; इव (iva) - like; उद्धृतम् (uddhṛtam) - lifted;]
(All, with hairs standing on end, frightened, having seen Kiicaka, thus (saw) the tortoise with whole body contracted, like lifted on the ground.)
All became frightened, their hairs standing on end, upon seeing Kiicaka—thus like a tortoise withdrawn with all its limbs, lifted up from the ground. (04-22-2)
पोथितं भीमसेनेन तमिन्द्रेणेव दानवम्। संस्कारयितुमिच्छन्तो बहिर्नेतुं प्रचक्रमुः ॥०४-२२-३॥
pothitaṃ bhīmasenena tam indreṇaiva dānavam। saṃskārayitum icchanto bahir netuṃ pracakramuḥ॥04-22-3॥
[पोथितं (pothitaṃ) - struck down; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; तम् (tam) - that; इन्द्रेणेव (indreṇa eva) - like by Indra; दानवम् (dānavam) - the demon; संस्कारयितुम् (saṃskārayitum) - to perform the funeral rites; इच्छन्तः (icchantaḥ) - desiring; बहि: (bahis) - outside; नेतुम् (netum) - to take; प्रचक्रमुः (pracakramuḥ) - they set about;]
(Struck down by Bhīmasena, that demon, like by Indra, desiring to perform the funeral rites, to take outside, they set about.)
Having been struck down by Bhīmasena, that demon—just as if by Indra—they set about to take outside, desiring to perform the funeral rites. (04-22-3)
ददृशुस्ते ततः कृष्णां सूतपुत्राः समागताः। अदूरादनवद्याङ्गीं स्तम्भमालिङ्ग्य तिष्ठतीम् ॥०४-२२-४॥
dadṛśus te tataḥ kṛṣṇāṃ sūtaputrāḥ samāgatāḥ। adūrād anavadyāṅgīṃ stambhamāliṅgya tiṣṭhatīm ॥04-22-4॥
[ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - (they) saw; ते (te) - they; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - (her who is) dark-complexioned (Draupadi); सूतपुत्राः (sūtaputrāḥ) - the sons of the charioteer; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - having assembled; अदूरात् (adūrāt) - from not far (nearby); अनवद्याङ्गीम् (anavadyāṅgīm) - (her) of faultless limbs; स्तम्भम् (stambham) - (to a) pillar; आलिङ्ग्य (āliṅgya) - embracing; तिष्ठतीम् (tiṣṭhatīm) - standing;]
(They saw then the dark-complexioned (one), the sons of the charioteer having assembled, from not far her of faultless limbs, embracing the pillar, standing.)
Then the sons of the charioteer, having gathered, saw the dark-complexioned (Draupadi), standing near, of flawless form, clinging to a pillar. (04-22-4)
समवेतेषु सूतेषु तानुवाचोपकीचकः। हन्यतां शीघ्रमसती यत्कृते कीचको हतः ॥०४-२२-५॥
samaveteṣu sūteṣu tānuvācopakīcakaḥ। hanyatāṃ śīghram asatī yatkṛte kīcako hataḥ ॥04-22-5॥
[समवेतेषु (samaveteṣu) - when assembled; सूतेषु (sūteṣu) - the charioteers; तान् (tān) - to them; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; उपकीचकः (upakīcakaḥ) - Upakīcaka; हन्यताम् (hanyatām) - let (her) be killed; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; असती (asatī) - unfaithful woman; यत् (yat) - because of whom; कृते (kṛte) - on account of; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; हतः (hataḥ) - has been killed;]
(When the charioteers were assembled, Upakīcaka spoke to them: "Let the unfaithful woman because of whom Kīcaka has been killed be slain quickly.")
When the charioteers were gathered together, Upakīcaka said to them: "Quickly kill the unchaste woman for whose sake Kīcaka was killed." (04-22-5)
अथ वा नेह हन्तव्या दह्यतां कामिना सह। मृतस्यापि प्रियं कार्यं सूतपुत्रस्य सर्वथा ॥०४-२२-६॥
atha vā neha hantavyā dahyatāṃ kāminā saha। mṛtasyāpi priyaṃ kāryaṃ sūtaputrasya sarvathā॥04-22-6॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; नेह (na iha) - not here; हन्तव्या (hantavyā) - (she) to be killed; दह्यतां (dahyatām) - let (her) be burned; कामिना (kāminā) - with the lover; सह (saha) - with; मृतस्यापि (mṛtasya api) - of the dead one also; प्रियं (priyam) - dear thing; loving act; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; सूतपुत्रस्य (sūtaputrasya) - of the charioteer's son; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way;]
(Now or, let her not be killed here, let her be burned with the lover; even for the dead, a dear thing should be done for the charioteer's son in every way.)
Alternatively, if she is not to be killed here, let her be burned along with her lover; even for the dead, something dear should always be done for the charioteer's son. (04-22-6)
ततो विराटमूचुस्ते कीचकोऽस्याः कृते हतः। सहाद्यानेन दह्येत तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥०४-२२-७॥
tato virāṭamūcus te kīcako'syāḥ kṛte hataḥ. sahādyānena dahyeta tadanujñātum arhasi ॥04-22-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विराटम् (virāṭam) - to Virāṭa; ऊचु: (ūcuḥ) - they said; ते (te) - they; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake; हतः (hataḥ) - was slain; सह (saha) - together with; अध्यानेन (adyānena) - with his followers; दह्येत (dahyeta) - should be burned; तत् (tat) - that; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Then they said to Virāṭa: Kīcaka was slain for her sake. Together with his followers, he should be burned. That you ought to permit.)
Then they said to Virāṭa: "Kīcaka has been slain for her sake. It is fitting that, along with his followers, he should be burned. You should allow that." (4-22-7)
पराक्रमं तु सूतानां मत्वा राजान्वमोदत। सैरन्ध्र्याः सूतपुत्रेण सह दाहं विशां पते ॥०४-२२-८॥
parākramaṃ tu sūtānāṃ matvā rājā anvamodata. sairandhryāḥ sūtaputreṇa saha dāhaṃ viśāṃ pate ॥04-22-8॥
[पराक्रमं (parākramaṃ) - valour; courage; तु (tu) - but; सूतानां (sūtānāṃ) - of the charioteers; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; having thought; राजा (rājā) - the king; अन्वमोदत (anvamodata) - was gratified; rejoiced; सैरन्ध्र्याः (sairandhryāḥ) - of Sairandhrī; सूतपुत्रेण (sūtaputreṇa) - with the son of the charioteer; सह (saha) - together with; दाहं (dāhaṃ) - pain; burning; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of the people; O king;]
(But having considered the valour of the charioteers, the king was gratified. O lord of the people, (he) felt pain together with the son of the charioteer of Sairandhrī.)
But having observed the valour of the charioteers, the king was pleased. O lord of the people, he experienced pain together with the son of Sairandhrī's charioteer. (4-22-8)
तां समासाद्य वित्रस्तां कृष्णां कमललोचनाम्। मोमुह्यमानां ते तत्र जगृहुः कीचका भृशम् ॥०४-२२-९॥
tāṁ samāsādya vitrastāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ kamalalocanām। momuhyamānāṁ te tatra jagṛhuḥ kīcakā bhṛśam ॥04-22-9॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; वित्रस्ताम् (vitrastām) - terrified; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); कमललोचनाम् (kamalalocanām) - lotus-eyed; मोमुह्यमानाम् (momuhyamānām) - becoming greatly bewildered; ते (te) - they; तत्र (tatra) - there; जगृहुः (jagṛhuḥ) - seized; कीचकाः (kīcakāḥ) - the Kīcakās; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - violently;]
(Her, having approached, terrified, Kṛṣṇā, lotus-eyed, becoming greatly bewildered, they, there, seized, Kīcakās, violently.)
The Kīcakās, having come near her—the terrified, lotus-eyed Kṛṣṇā who was greatly bewildered—seized her violently at that place. (04-22-9)
ततस्तु तां समारोप्य निबध्य च सुमध्यमाम्। जग्मुरुद्यम्य ते सर्वे श्मशानमभितस्तदा ॥०४-२२-१०॥
tatastu tāṃ samāropya nibadhya ca sumadhyamām। jagmurudhyamya te sarve śmaśānamabhitastadā॥04-22-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - indeed; तां (tāṃ) - her; समारोप्य (samāropya) - having lifted up; निबध्य (nibadhya) - having bound; च (ca) - and; सुमध्यमाम् (sumadhyamām) - the slender-waisted one; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; उद्यम्य (udhyamya) - having taken up; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; श्मशानम् (śmaśānam) - cremation ground; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - towards; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(Then indeed her having lifted up, having bound and the slender-waisted one, having taken up, they all went towards the cremation ground at that time.)
Then, after binding and lifting up that slender-waisted woman, all of them took her and went towards the cremation ground at that time. (04-22-10)
ह्रियमाणा तु सा राजन्सूतपुत्रैरनिन्दिता। प्राक्रोशन्नाथमिच्छन्ती कृष्णा नाथवती सती ॥०४-२२-११॥
hriyamāṇā tu sā rājan sūtaputrair aninditā। prākrośannātham icchantī kṛṣṇā nāthavatī satī ॥04-22-11॥
[ह्रियमाणा (hriyamāṇā) - being carried away; तु (tu) - but; सा (sā) - she; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सूतपुत्रैः (sūtaputraiḥ) - by the sons of the charioteer; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - blameless; प्राक्रोशत् (prākrośat) - cried out; नाथम् (nātham) - for her protector; इच्छन्ती (icchantī) - desiring; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); नाथवती (nāthavatī) - having a protector; सती (satī) - chaste;]
(Being carried away but she O king by the sons of the charioteer blameless cried out for her protector desiring Kṛṣṇā, having a protector, chaste.)
But as she was being carried away, O king, the blameless and chaste Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), who had a protector, cried out desiring her lord. (04-22-11)

Victory, Jayanta, Vijaya, Jayatsena, and Jayadbala — let them understand my words; the sons of the charioteer are leading me. (04-22-12)
येषां ज्यातलनिर्घोषो विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः। व्यश्रूयत महायुद्धे भीमघोषस्तरस्विनाम् ॥०४-२२-१३॥
yeṣāṃ jyātalanirghoṣo visphūrjitam ivāśaneḥ। vyaśrūyata mahāyuddhe bhīmaghoṣas tarasvinām ॥04-22-13॥
[येषां (yeṣām) - of whom; ज्यातलनिर्घोषः (jyātala-nirghoṣaḥ) - the twang of bowstring; विस्फूर्जितम् (visphūrjitam) - thunder; इव (iva) - like; आशनेः (āśaneḥ) - of a thunderbolt; व्यश्रूयत (vyaśrūyata) - was heard; महायुद्धे (mahāyuddhe) - in the great battle; भीमघोषः (bhīmaghoṣaḥ) - terrifying noise; तरस्विनाम् (tarasvinām) - of the energetic;]
(Of whom the twang of bowstring—like the thunder of a thunderbolt—was heard in the great battle, a terrifying noise of the energetic.)
The terrifying twang of the bows of those energetic warriors, like the thunder of a thunderbolt, was heard in the great battle. (04-22-13)
रथघोषश्च बलवान्गन्धर्वाणां यशस्विनाम्। ते मे वाचं विजानन्तु सूतपुत्रा नयन्ति माम् ॥०४-२२-१४॥
rathaghoṣaś ca balavān gandharvāṇāṃ yaśasvinām। te me vācaṃ vijānantu sūtaputrā nayanti mām॥04-22-14॥

(Of her those piteous words—of Kṛṣṇā, the lamentations—having heard indeed, Bhīma rushed from the bed without reflecting.)
When Bhīma heard those piteous lamentations—the words of Kṛṣṇā—he immediately rushed from his bed without any hesitation. (04-22-15)

ahaṃ śṛṇomi te vācaṃ tvayā sairandhri bhāṣitām। tasmāt te sūtaputrebhyo na bhayaṃ bhīru vidyate॥04-22-16॥

(I hear your speech uttered by you, O Sairandhri. Therefore, to you, from the sons of the charioteer, fear, O timid one, does not exist.)
I hear the words you have spoken, O Sairandhri. Therefore, O timid one, you need not fear the sons of the charioteer. (04-22-16)

इत्युक्त्वा स महाबाहुर्विजजृम्भे जिघांसया। ततः स व्यायतं कृत्वा वेषं विपरिवर्त्य च ॥ अद्वारेणाभ्यवस्कन्द्य निर्जगाम बहिस्तदा ॥०४-२२-१७॥
ity uktvā sa mahābāhur vijajṛmbhe jighāṁsayā. tataḥ sa vyāyataṁ kṛtvā veṣaṁ viparivartya ca ॥ advāreṇābhyavaskandya nirjagāma bahis tadā ॥04-22-17॥
[इति उुक्त्वा (iti uktvā) - thus having spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; विजजृम्भे (vijajṛmbhe) - stretched himself out; जिघांसया (jighāṁsayā) - with the intention to harm; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; व्यायतं कृत्वा (vyāyataṁ kṛtvā) - making himself extended; वेषं विपरिवर्त्य च (veṣaṁ viparivartya ca) - and having changed his appearance; अद्वारेण (advāreṇa) - by another exit; अभ्यवस्कन्द्य (abhyavaskandya) - having leapt; निर्जगाम (nirjagāma) - he went out; बहि: तदा (bahiḥ tadā) - outside at that time;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the mighty-armed, stretched himself out with the intention to harm. Then he, having made himself extended and having changed his appearance, by another exit, having leapt, went out outside at that time.)
Having thus spoken, the mighty-armed one stretched himself out with harmful intent. Then, extending himself and changing his appearance, he leapt out by a different exit and went outside at that moment. (04-22-17)
स भीमसेनः प्राकारादारुज्य तरसा द्रुमम्। श्मशानाभिमुखः प्रायाद्यत्र ते कीचका गताः ॥०४-२२-१८॥
sa bhīmasenaḥ prākārād ārujya tarasā drumam। śmaśānābhimukhaḥ prāyād yatra te kīcakā gatāḥ॥04-22-18॥

Bhīmasena leaped forcefully from the wall, seized a tree, and went toward the cremation ground where the Kīcakas had gone. (04-22-18)
स तं वृक्षं दशव्यामं सस्कन्धविटपं बली। प्रगृह्याभ्यद्रवत्सूतान्दण्डपाणिरिवान्तकः ॥०४-२२-१९॥
sa taṁ vṛkṣaṁ daśavyāmaṁ saskandhaviṭapaṁ balī। pragṛhyābhyadravatsūtāndaṇḍapāṇirivāntakaḥ॥04-22-19॥

(He, the strong one, having seized that ten-vyāma long tree with branches and boughs, rushed towards the charioteers like Death with staff in hand.)
He, strong as he was, seized that ten-vyāma-long tree with its branches and boughs and charged at the charioteers like Death wielding his staff. (04-22-19)
ऊरुवेगेन तस्याथ न्यग्रोधाश्वत्थकिंशुकाः। भूमौ निपतिता वृक्षाः सङ्घशस्तत्र शेरते ॥०४-२२-२०॥
ūruvegena tasyātha nyagrodhāśvatthakiṃśukāḥ। bhūmau nipatitā vṛkṣāḥ saṅghaśas tatra śerate॥04-22-20॥
[ऊरुवेगेन (ūruvegena) - with great speed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अथ (atha) - then; न्यग्रोध- अश्वत्थ- किंशुकाः (nyagrodha-aśvattha-kiṃśukāḥ) - banyan, peepal, and kimshuka trees; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; निपतिताः (nipatitāḥ) - fallen; वृक्षाः (vṛkṣāḥ) - trees; सङ्घशः (saṅghaśas) - in groups; तत्र (tatra) - there; शेरते (śerate) - are lying;]
(With great speed, of him, then, banyan, peepal, and kimshuka trees, fallen trees, in groups, there, are lying.)
With his great speed, then, the banyan, peepal, and kimshuka trees had fallen to the ground there and were lying in groups. (04-22-20)
तं सिंहमिव सङ्क्रुद्धं दृष्ट्वा गन्धर्वमागतम्। वित्रेसुः सर्वतः सूता विषादभयकम्पिताः ॥०४-२२-२१॥
taṃ siṃham iva saṅkruddhaṃ dṛṣṭvā gandharvam āgatam। vitresuḥ sarvataḥ sūtā viṣāda-bhaya-kampitāḥ॥04-22-21॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; सिंहमिव (siṃham iva) - like a lion; सङ्क्रुद्धं (saṅkruddham) - enraged; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गन्धर्वम् (gandharvam) - the Gandharva; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; वित्रेसुः (vitresuḥ) - became frightened; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; सूता (sūtā) - the charioteers; विषादभयकम्पिताः (viṣāda-bhaya-kampitāḥ) - trembling with despair and fear;]
(Him like a lion enraged having seen the Gandharva arrived, became frightened on all sides the charioteers, trembling with despair and fear.)

तमन्तकमिवायान्तं गन्धर्वं प्रेक्ष्य ते तदा। दिधक्षन्तस्तदा ज्येष्ठं भ्रातरं ह्युपकीचकाः ॥ परस्परमथोचुस्ते विषादभयकम्पिताः ॥०४-२२-२२॥
tam antakam iva āyāntam gandharvam prekṣya te tadā। didhakṣantaḥ tadā jyeṣṭham bhrātaram hi upakīcakāḥ ॥ parasparam atha ūcuḥ te viṣāda-bhaya-kampitāḥ ॥04-22-22॥
[तम् (tam) (tam) - him; अन्तकमिव (antakam iva) (antakam iva) - like Yama (the god of death); आयान्तम् (āyāntam) (āyāntam) - approaching; गन्धर्वम् (gandharvam) (gandharvam) - (the) Gandharva; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) (prekṣya) - having seen; ते (te) (te) - they; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; दिधक्षन्तः (didhakṣantaḥ) (didhakṣantaḥ) - desiring to burn; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) (jyeṣṭham) - elder; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) (bhrātaram) - brother; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; उपकीचकाः (upakīcakāḥ) (upakīcakāḥ) - the Upakīcakas; परस्परम् (parasparam) (parasparam) - to one another; अथ (atha) (atha) - then; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) (ūcuḥ) - said; ते (te) (te) - they; विषाद-भय-कम्पिताः (viṣāda-bhaya-kampitāḥ) (viṣāda-bhaya-kampitāḥ) - shaken by grief and fear;]
(Him, like Yama (the god of death) approaching, the Gandharva having seen, they then, desiring to burn the elder brother indeed, the Upakīcakas, to one another then said, they, shaken by grief and fear.)
Seeing that Gandharva approaching like Yama (the god of death), the Upakīcakas, desiring to burn the elder brother, then, shaking with grief and fear, said to one another. (04-22-22)
गन्धर्वो बलवानेति क्रुद्ध उद्यम्य पादपम्। सैरन्ध्री मुच्यतां शीघ्रं महन्नो भयमागतम् ॥०४-२२-२३॥
gandharvo balavāneti kruddha udyamya pādapam। sairandhrī mucyatāṃ śīghraṃ mahan no bhayam āgatam ॥04-22-23॥
[गन्धर्वः (gandharvaḥ) - a gandharva (celestial being); बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; इति (iti) - thus; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angered; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having raised; पादपम् (pādapam) - a tree; सैरन्ध्री (sairandhrī) - Sairandhrī (proper name); मुच्यताम् (mucyatām) - let her be released; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; महत् (mahat) - great; नः (naḥ) - for us; भयम् (bhayam) - danger; आगतम् (āgatam) - has come;]
(A gandharva (celestial being) is powerful—thus, angered, having raised a tree. Sairandhrī, let her be released quickly; great danger for us has come.)
"A gandharva is powerful!" In anger he has raised a tree. Release Sairandhrī quickly, for great danger has come upon us. (04-22-23)
ते तु दृष्ट्वा तमाविद्धं भीमसेनेन पादपम्। विमुच्य द्रौपदीं तत्र प्राद्रवन्नगरं प्रति ॥०४-२२-२४॥
te tu dṛṣṭvā tamāviddhaṃ bhīmasenena pādapam। vimucya draupadīṃ tatra prādravannagaraṃ prati ॥04-22-24॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - however; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तम् (tam) - that; आविद्धं (āviddham) - pierced; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; पादपम् (pādapam) - tree; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadī; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्राद्रवन् (prādravan) - they fled; नगरं (nagaram) - city; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(They however, having seen that tree pierced by Bhīmasena, having released Draupadī there, fled towards the city.)

द्रवतस्तांस्तु सम्प्रेक्ष्य स वज्री दानवानिव। शतं पञ्चाधिकं भीमः प्राहिणोद्यमसादनम् ॥०४-२२-२५॥
dravatastāṃstu samprekṣya sa vajrī dānavāniva। śataṃ pañcādhikaṃ bhīmaḥ prāhiṇodyamasādanam ॥04-22-25॥
[द्रवतस्तान् (dravatastān) - those (who were) fleeing; तु (tu) - but; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having observed; सः (saḥ) - he; वज्री (vajrī) - (the) wielder of the vajra; दानवान् (dānavān) - demons; इव (iva) - like; शतम् (śatam) - one hundred; पञ्चाधिकम् (pañcādhikam) - plus five; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; यमसादनम् (yamasādanam) - to the abode of Yama;]
(Those (who were) fleeing, but having observed, he, the wielder of the vajra, like demons, one hundred plus five, Bhīma sent to the abode of Yama.)
Observing those who were fleeing, Bhīma, like the wielder of the vajra among demons, sent one hundred and five to the abode of Yama. (04-22-25)
तत आश्वासयत्कृष्णां प्रविमुच्य विशां पते। उवाच च महाबाहुः पाञ्चालीं तत्र द्रौपदीम् ॥ अश्रुपूर्णमुखीं दीनां दुर्धर्षः स वृकोदरः ॥०४-२२-२६॥
tat āśvāsayat kṛṣṇāṃ pravimucya viśāṃ pate। uvāca ca mahābāhuḥ pāñcālīṃ tatra draupadīm ॥ aśrupūrṇamukhīṃ dīnāṃ durdharṣaḥ sa vṛkodaraḥ ॥04-22-26॥

(Then, having set free Kṛṣṇā, O lord of the people, the mighty-armed (one) spoke also to Pāñcālī there, Draupadī, with face full of tears, dejected; that irrepressible Vṛkodara (said this).)
Then, having released Kṛṣṇā, O lord of the people, the mighty-armed Vṛkodara (Bhīma) consoled Pāñcālī—there, Draupadī, whose face was full of tears and who was dejected. (04-22-26)
एवं ते भीरु वध्यन्ते ये त्वां क्लिश्यन्त्यनागसम्। प्रैहि त्वं नगरं कृष्णे न भयं विद्यते तव ॥ अन्येनाहं गमिष्यामि विराटस्य महानसम् ॥०४-२२-२७॥
evaṃ te bhīru vadhyante ye tvāṃ kliśyantyanāgasam। praihi tvaṃ nagaraṃ kṛṣṇe na bhayaṃ vidyate tava ॥ anyenāhaṃ gamiṣyāmi virāṭasya mahānasam ॥04-22-27॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ते (te) - for you; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; वध्यन्ते (vadhyante) - are to be punished; ये (ye) - those who; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; क्लिश्यन्ति (kliśyanti) - afflict; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - without fault; प्रैहि (praihi) - go forth; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; नगरम् (nagaraṃ) - city; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); न (na) - not; भयम् (bhayaṃ) - fear; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; तव (tava) - for you; अन्येन (anyena) - by another way; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - shall go; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; महानसम् (mahānasam) - kitchen;]
(Thus for you, timid one, are to be punished those who afflict you, faultless one. Go forth, you, to the city, O Kṛṣṇā; no fear exists for you. By another way I shall go to the kitchen of Virāṭa. (04-22-27))
Thus, O timid one, those who trouble you, though you are faultless, deserve punishment. Go to the city, O Kṛṣṇā; there is no danger to you. I will go to the kitchen of Virāṭa by another way. (04-22-27)
पञ्चाधिकं शतं तच्च निहतं तत्र भारत। महावनमिव छिन्नं शिश्ये विगलितद्रुमम् ॥०४-२२-२८॥
pañcādhikaṃ śataṃ tacca nihataṃ tatra bhārata। mahāvanamiva chinnaṃ śiśye vigalitadrumam॥04-22-28॥
[पञ्चाधिकं (pañcādhikam) - five more than; शतं (śatam) - a hundred; तच्च (tacca) - and that; निहतं (nihatam) - slain; तत्र (tatra) - there; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; महावनमिव (mahāvanam iva) - like a great forest; छिन्नं (chinnam) - cut down; शिश्ये (śiśye) - lay; विगलितद्रुमम् (vigalitadrumam) - with fallen trees;]
(Five more than a hundred, and that slain there, O Bhārata. Like a great forest cut down lay (it), with (its) trees fallen.)
O Bhārata, there, a hundred and five (men) were slain; it lay like a great forest cut down, with its trees fallen. (4-22-28)
एवं ते निहता राजञ्शतं पञ्च च कीचकाः। स च सेनापतिः पूर्वमित्येतत्सूतषट्शतम् ॥०४-२२-२९॥
evaṃ te nihatā rājañśataṃ pañca ca kīcakāḥ। sa ca senāpatiḥ pūrvamityetatsūtaṣaṭśatam ॥04-22-29॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ते (te) - they; निहता (nihatā) - were slain; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शतं (śatam) - hundred; पञ्च (pañca) - five; च (ca) - and; कीचकाः (kīcakāḥ) - Kīcakas; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; सेनापतिः (senāpatiḥ) - the commander; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; सूतर् षट्शतम् (sūtaṣaṭśatam) - six hundred charioteers;]
(Thus they were slain, O king, one hundred and five Kīcakas; and the commander before—thus this is (the total) six hundred charioteers.)
Thus, O king, one hundred and five Kīcakas were slain along with their commander earlier—thus, in total, this makes six hundred charioteers. (04-22-29)
तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं नरा नार्यश्च सङ्गताः। विस्मयं परमं गत्वा नोचुः किञ्चन भारत ॥०४-२२-३०॥
tad dṛṣṭvā mahad-āścaryaṃ narā nāryaś ca saṅgatāḥ। vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatvā nocuḥ kiñcana bhārata॥04-22-30॥
[तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महत् (mahat) - great; आश्चर्यं (āścaryam) - wonder; नराः (narāḥ) - men; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; च (ca) - and; सङ्गताः (saṅgatāḥ) - assembled; विस्मयं (vismayam) - amazement; परमं (paramam) - supreme; गत्वा (gatvā) - having attained; न (na) - not; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - (they) spoke; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(That having seen great wonder men women and assembled, amazement supreme having attained, not spoke anything, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having seen that great wonder, the assembled men and women, attaining supreme amazement, did not say anything. (04-22-30)
