ते दृष्ट्वा निहतान्सूतान्राज्ञे गत्वा न्यवेदयन्। गन्धर्वैर्निहता राजन्सूतपुत्राः परःशताः ॥०४-२३-१॥
te dṛṣṭvā nihatān sūtān rājñe gatvā nyavedayan। gandharvair nihatā rājaṁ sūta-putrāḥ paraḥ-śatāḥ॥04-23-1॥
[ते (te) - they; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; निहतान् (nihatān) - slain; सूतान् (sūtān) - charioteers; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - they reported; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; निहता (nihatā) - slain; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सूतपुत्राः (sūta-putrāḥ) - sons of charioteers; परःशताः (paraḥ-śatāḥ) - hundreds;]
(They, having seen the slain charioteers, having gone to the king, reported: O king, by the Gandharvas hundreds of sons of charioteers are slain.)
Having seen the slain charioteers, they went to the king and informed him: "O king, hundreds of charioteers' sons have been slain by the Gandharvas." (04-23-1)
यथा वज्रेण वै दीर्णं पर्वतस्य महच्छिरः। विनिकीर्णं प्रदृश्येत तथा सूता महीतले ॥०४-२३-२॥
yathā vajreṇa vai dīrṇaṁ parvatasya mahacchiraḥ। vinikīrṇaṁ pradṛśyeta tathā sūtā mahītale ॥04-23-2॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; according as; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - with the thunderbolt; by thunderbolt; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; दीर्णं (dīrṇaṁ) - split; torn apart; पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of mountain; महच्छिरः (mahacchiraḥ) - great head; large summit; विनिकीर्णं (vinikīrṇaṁ) - spread out; scattered; प्रदृश्येत (pradṛśyeta) - would be seen; would appear; तथा (tathā) - thus; so; सूता (sūtā) - Sūta; the charioteer; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth's surface; on the ground;]
(As by the thunderbolt indeed the great head of a mountain split, scattered would be seen; thus Sūta on the earth's surface.)
Just as the great summit of a mountain split by the thunderbolt is seen scattered, so was Sūta on the ground. (04-23-2)
सैरन्ध्री च विमुक्तासौ पुनरायाति ते गृहम्। सर्वं संशयितं राजन्नगरं ते भविष्यति ॥०४-२३-३॥
sairaṃdhrī ca vimuktāsau punar āyāti te gṛham। sarvaṃ saṃśayitaṃ rājannagaraṃ te bhaviṣyati॥04-23-3॥
[सैरन्ध्री (sairaṃdhrī) - Sairandhrī (proper noun, a woman's name); च (ca) - and; विमुक्ता (vimuktā) - released; असौ (asau) - this (she); पुनः (punar) - again; आयाति (āyāti) - comes; ते (te) - your; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; संशयितम् (saṃśayitam) - become suspicious; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; ते (te) - your; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(Sairandhrī and released, this (she) again comes to your house. All (will) become suspicious, O king, your city will become.)
Sairandhrī, having been released, will return again to your house; O king, your entire city will become suspicious. (04-23-3)
तथारूपा हि सैरन्ध्री गन्धर्वाश्च महाबलाः। पुंसामिष्टश्च विषयो मैथुनाय न संशयः ॥०४-२३-४॥
tathā-rūpā hi sairandhrī gandharvāś ca mahā-balāḥ। puṁsām iṣṭaś ca viṣayaḥ maithunāya na saṁśayaḥ॥04-23-4॥
[तथारूपा (tathā-rūpā) - of such form; हि (hi) - indeed; सैरन्ध्री (sairandhrī) - Sairandhrī (a female proper noun); गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; च (ca) - and; महाबलाः (mahā-balāḥ) - mighty; पुंसाम् (puṁsām) - for men; इष्टः (iṣṭaḥ) - desired; च (ca) - and; विषयः (viṣayaḥ) - object; मैथुनाय (maithunāya) - for intercourse; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Of such form indeed Sairandhrī and the mighty Gandharvas, for men a desired object for intercourse, there is no doubt.)
Indeed, Sairandhrī of such a form and the mighty Gandharvas are, for men, a desired object of union; there is no doubt. (04-23-4)
यथा सैरन्ध्रिवेषेण न ते राजन्निदं पुरम्। विनाशमेति वै क्षिप्रं तथा नीतिर्विधीयताम् ॥०४-२३-५॥
yathā sairandhriveṣeṇa na te rājan-idaṃ puram। vināśam-eti vai kṣipram tathā nītir-vidhīyatām ॥04-23-5॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; like; सैरन्ध्रिवेषेण (sairandhriveṣeṇa) - with the guise of a maid; with the attire of Sairandhri; न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इदं (idaṃ) - this; पुरम् (puram) - city; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; एति (eti) - reaches; attains; comes to; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - swiftly; quickly; तथा (tathā) - so; similarly; thus; नीति: (nītiḥ) - policy; conduct; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let it be established; let it be arranged;]
(As with the guise of Sairandhri not for you, O king, this city reaches destruction swiftly indeed; so let the policy be established.)
Just as the city, through the guise of Sairandhri, does not quickly reach destruction for you, O king, so should policy be established. (04-23-5)
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा विराटो वाहिनीपतिः। अब्रवीत्क्रियतामेषां सूतानां परमक्रिया ॥०४-२३-६॥
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā virāṭo vāhinīpatiḥ। abravītkriyatāmeṣāṃ sūtānāṃ paramakriyā ॥04-23-6॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; तद्वचनम् (tadvacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विराटः (virāṭaḥ) - Virāṭa; वाहिनीपतिः (vāhinīpatiḥ) - the commander of the army; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; एषाम् (eṣām) - for these; सूतानाम् (sūtānām) - of the charioteers; परमक्रिया (paramakriyā) - the highest rite;]
(Of them those words having heard, Virāṭa, the commander of the army, said: Let for these charioteers the highest rite be performed.)
Having heard those words of theirs, Virāṭa, the commander of the army, said: "Let the highest funeral rites be performed for these charioteers." (04-23-6)
एकस्मिन्नेव ते सर्वे सुसमिद्धे हुताशने। दह्यन्तां कीचकाः शीघ्रं रत्नैर्गन्धैश्च सर्वशः ॥०४-२३-७॥
ekasminn eva te sarve susamiddhe hutāśane। dahyantāṃ kīcakāḥ śīghraṃ ratnair gandhaiś ca sarvaśaḥ॥04-23-7॥
[एकस्मिन्नेव (ekasmin eva) - in the very one (place or object); ते (te) - your; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सुसमिद्धे (su-samiddhe) - well-kindled; हुताशने (hutāśane) - on the fire; दह्यन्तां (dahyantāṃ) - let them be burned; कीचकाः (kīcakāḥ) - Kīcakas; शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - with jewels; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with perfumes; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(In the very one (place), your all, on the well-kindled fire, let the Kīcakas be burned quickly with jewels and perfumes, entirely.)
Let all your Kīcakas be quickly burned entirely with jewels and perfumes on the same well-kindled fire. (04-23-7)
सुदेष्णां चाब्रवीद्राजा महिषीं जातसाध्वसः। सैरन्ध्रीमागतां ब्रूया ममैव वचनादिदम् ॥०४-२३-८॥
sudeṣṇāṃ cābravīdrājā mahiṣīṃ jātasādhvasaḥ. sairandhrīmāgatāṃ brūyā mamaiva vacanādidam ॥04-23-8॥
[सुदेष्णां (sudeṣṇām) - to Sudeshna; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) said; राजा (rājā) - the king; महिषीं (mahiṣīm) - queen (consort); जातसाध्वसः (jātasādhvasaḥ) - being filled with fear; सैरन्ध्रीम् (sairandhrīm) - Sairandhri; आगताम् (āgatām) - who has arrived; ब्रूया (brūyā) - (you) should tell; मम (mama) - my; एव (eva) - only; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by the word; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(To Sudeshna and the king (who was) filled with fear said (to his) queen: 'Sairandhri who has arrived, you should tell this by my own word.')
The king, being filled with fear, said to Queen Sudeshna: 'Tell Sairandhri, who has come, this on my behalf.' (4-23-8)
गच्छ सैरन्ध्रि भद्रं ते यथाकामं चराबले। बिभेति राजा सुश्रोणि गन्धर्वेभ्यः पराभवात् ॥०४-२३-९॥
gaccha sairandhri bhadraṃ te yathākāmaṃ carābale। bibheti rājā suśroṇi gandharvebhyaḥ parābhavāt ॥04-23-9॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; सैरन्ध्रि (sairandhri) - O Sairandhri; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - prosperity; ते (te) - to you; यथाकामं (yathākāmam) - as you wish; चरा (carā) - move about; अबले (abale) - O weak one; बिभेति (bibheti) - he fears; राजा (rājā) - the king; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped one; गन्धर्वेभ्यः (gandharvebhyaḥ) - from the Gandharvas; पराभवात् (parābhavāt) - due to defeat;]
(Go, O Sairandhri, prosperity to you. As you wish, move about, O weak one. The king, O beautiful-hipped one, fears from the Gandharvas due to defeat.)
Go, Sairandhri, may you fare well. Do as you wish, O gentle lady. The king, O beautiful-hipped one, fears being defeated by the Gandharvas. (04-23-9)
न हि तामुत्सहे वक्तुं स्वयं गन्धर्वरक्षिताम्। स्त्रियस्त्वदोषास्तां वक्तुमतस्त्वां प्रब्रवीम्यहम् ॥०४-२३-१०॥
na hi tām utsahe vaktum svayam gandharva-rakṣitām। striyaḥ tvad-doṣāḥ tām vaktum atas tvām prabravīmi aham॥04-23-10॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ताम् (tām) - her; उत्सहे (utsahe) - I am able; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak (about); स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; गन्धर्वरक्षिताम् (gandharva-rakṣitām) - protected by Gandharvas; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; त्वदोषाः (tvad-doṣāḥ) - because of your fault; ताम् (tām) - her; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak (about); अतः (atas) - therefore; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; प्रब्रवीमि (prabravīmi) - I declare; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Not indeed her I am able to speak (about) myself, (she is) protected by Gandharvas. Women, because of your fault, her to speak (about), therefore to you I declare (this) I.)
Indeed, I am not able to speak about her myself, as she is protected by Gandharvas. Because of your fault, I speak to you about her.
अथ मुक्ता भयात्कृष्णा सूतपुत्रान्निरस्य च। मोक्षिता भीमसेनेन जगाम नगरं प्रति ॥०४-२३-११॥
atha muktā bhayāt kṛṣṇā sūtaputrān nirasya ca। mokṣitā bhīmasenena jagāma nagaraṃ prati॥04-23-11॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; मुक्ता (muktā) - released; set free; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); सूतपुत्रान् (sūtaputrān) - Sons of Sūta (reference to Karṇa, et al.); निरस्य (nirasya) - driven away; having expelled; च (ca) - and; मोक्षिता (mokṣitā) - liberated; freed; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; जगाम (jagāma) - she went; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - to the city; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then released from fear, Kṛṣṇā, having driven away the Sūta's sons and being freed by Bhīmasena, she went towards the city.)
Then Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), released from fear after Bhīmasena drove away the Sūta's sons and freed her, went towards the city. (04-23-11)
त्रासितेव मृगी बाला शार्दूलेन मनस्विनी। गात्राणि वाससी चैव प्रक्षाल्य सलिलेन सा ॥०४-२३-१२॥
trāsiteva mṛgī bālā śārdūlena manasvinī। gātrāṇi vāsasī caiva prakṣālya salilena sā ॥04-23-12॥
[त्रासिता (trāsitā) - frightened; इव (iva) - as if; मृगी (mṛgī) - doe (female deer); बाला (bālā) - young girl; शार्दूलेन (śārdūlena) - by a tiger; मनस्विनी (manasvinī) - high-minded; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; वाससी (vāsasī) - clothes; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - just; प्रक्षाल्य (prakṣālya) - having washed; सलिलेन (salilena) - with water; सा (sā) - she;]
(As if frightened, the doe-like young girl, high-minded, having washed the limbs and the clothes just with water, she (did so) by the tiger.)
She, high-minded like a young doe frightened by a tiger, washed her limbs and clothes with water. (04-23-12)
तां दृष्ट्वा पुरुषा राजन्प्राद्रवन्त दिशो दश। गन्धर्वाणां भयत्रस्ताः केचिद्दृष्टीर्न्यमीलयन् ॥०४-२३-१३॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā puruṣā rājan prādravanta diśo daśa। gandharvāṇāṃ bhayatrastāḥ kecid dṛṣṭīr nyamīlayan ॥04-23-13॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her (accusative singular, referencing a feminine entity); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्राद्रवन्त (prādravanta) - ran away; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; दश (daśa) - ten; गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; भयत्रस्ताः (bhayatrastāḥ) - stricken with fear; केचित् (kecit) - some; दृष्टीन् (dṛṣṭīn) - eyes; न्यमीलयन् (nyamīlayan) - closed;]
(Her having seen, men, O king, ran away (into the) ten directions. Of the Gandharvas, stricken with fear, some (their) eyes closed.)
Seeing her, O King, the men ran away in all ten directions, and some of the Gandharvas, stricken with fear, closed their eyes. (04-23-13)
ततो महानसद्वारि भीमसेनमवस्थितम्। ददर्श राजन्पाञ्चाली यथा मत्तं महाद्विपम् ॥०४-२३-१४॥
tato mahānasadvāri bhīmasenam avasthitam। dadarśa rājan pāñcālī yathā mattaṃ mahādvipam ॥04-23-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; महानसद्वारि (mahānasadvāri) - at the kitchen door; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; अवस्थितम् (avasthitam) - standing; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Pāñcālī; यथा (yathā) - as; मत्तम् (mattam) - intoxicated; महाद्विपम् (mahādvipam) - great elephant;]
(Thereafter at the kitchen door Bhīmasena standing saw O king Pāñcālī, as (one sees) an intoxicated great elephant.)
Thereafter, O king, Pāñcālī saw Bhīmasena standing at the kitchen door, just like a great intoxicated elephant. (04-23-14)
तं विस्मयन्ती शनकैः सञ्ज्ञाभिरिदमब्रवीत्। गन्धर्वराजाय नमो येनास्मि परिमोचिता ॥०४-२३-१५॥
taṃ vismayantī śanakaiḥ saṃjñābhir idam abravīt. gandharvarājāya namo yenāsmi parimocitā ॥04-23-15॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; विस्मयन्ती (vismayantī) - astonished (she); शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - gently; सञ्ज्ञाभिः (saṃjñābhiḥ) - with gestures; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; गन्धर्वराजाय (gandharvarājāya) - to the king of Gandharvas; नमः (namaḥ) - obeisance; येन (yena) - by whom; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; परिमोचिता (parimocitā) - liberated;]
(Astonished, she gently, with gestures, said this to him: “Obeisance to the king of Gandharvas, by whom I am liberated.” (04-23-15))
Astonished, she slowly said with gestures: “Obeisance to the king of the Gandharvas, by whom I have been set free.” (04-23-15)
भीमसेन उवाच॥

ये यस्या विचरन्तीह पुरुषा वशवर्तिनः। तस्यास्ते वचनं श्रुत्वा अनृणा विचरन्त्युत ॥०४-२३-१६॥
ye yasyā vicarantīha puruṣā vaśavartinaḥ। tasyāste vacanaṁ śrutvā anṛṇā vicarantyuta॥04-23-16॥
[ये (ye) - who; (plural); यस्या (yasyā) - of whom; (feminine genitive singular;) विचरन्ति (vicaranti) - move about; (they wander;) इह (iha) - here; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; वशवर्तिनः (vaśavartinaḥ) - subservient; obedient; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; (of her; feminine genitive singular;) ते (te) - they; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; statement; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अनृणाः (anṛṇāḥ) - free from debt; (not indebted;) विचरन्ति (vicaranti) - move about; (they wander;) उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Who of whom men here obedient move about, her word having heard, free from debt indeed, they wander.)
The men who move about here obedient to her, having heard her word, indeed wander free from any debt. (04-23-16)

tataḥ sā nartanāgāre dhanañjayam apaśyat। rājñaḥ kanyā virāṭasya nartayānaṃ mahābhujam ॥04-23-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; नर्तनागारे (nartanāgāre) - in the dance hall; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; नर्तयानम् (nartayānam) - dancing; महाभुजम् (mahābhujam) - mighty-armed;]
(Then she in the dance hall saw Dhanañjaya. The king's daughter of Virāṭa dancing, mighty-armed.)
Then she saw Dhanañjaya in the dance hall — the mighty-armed dancer, daughter of King Virāṭa. (04-23-17)
ततस्ता नर्तनागाराद्विनिष्क्रम्य सहार्जुनाः। कन्या ददृशुरायान्तीं कृष्णां क्लिष्टामनागसम् ॥०४-२३-१८॥
tatastā naṛtanāgārād viniṣkramya sahārjunāḥ. kanyā dadṛśur āyāntīṃ kṛṣṇāṃ kliṣṭām anāgasam ॥04-23-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ता (tā) - they (feminine); नर्तनागारात् (naṛtanāgārāt) - from the dancing-hall; विनिष्क्रम्य (viniṣkramya) - having come out; सह (saha) - with; अर्जुनाः (arjunāḥ) - Arjuna; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - the young women; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; आयान्तीम् (āyāntīm) - coming (accusative feminine singular); कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); क्लिष्टाम् (kliṣṭām) - distressed; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - blameless;]
(Then they, having come out from the dancing hall with Arjuna, the maidens saw Kṛṣṇā coming, distressed, blameless.)
Then, having left the dancing hall with Arjuna, the young women saw Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) approaching—distressed and without fault. (04-23-18)
कन्या ऊचुः॥

दिष्ट्या सैरन्ध्रि मुक्तासि दिष्ट्यासि पुनरागता। दिष्ट्या विनिहताः सूता ये त्वां क्लिश्यन्त्यनागसम् ॥०४-२३-१९॥
diṣṭyā sairandhri muktāsi diṣṭyāsi punarāgatā। diṣṭyā vinihatāḥ sūtā ye tvāṃ kliśyantyanāgasam ॥04-23-19॥

(By good fortune, O Sairandhri, you are freed; by good fortune, you have come again; by good fortune, the charioteers who tormented you, being innocent, are defeated.)
By good fortune, O Sairandhri, you have been freed; by good fortune, you have returned; and by good fortune, those charioteers who tormented you despite your innocence have been vanquished. (04-23-19)

kathaṁ sairandhri muktāsi kathaṁ pāpāśca te hatāḥ। icchāmi vai tava śrotuṁ sarvameva yathātatham ॥04-23-20॥

(How, O Sairandhri, are you freed? How are your evildoers killed? I wish indeed to hear from you everything indeed as it truly happened.)
How, O Sairandhri, were you freed? How were your evil-doers killed? I truly wish to hear everything from you exactly as it happened. (04-23-20)

बृहन्नडे किं नु तव सैरन्ध्र्या कार्यमद्य वै। या त्वं वससि कल्याणि सदा कन्यापुरे सुखम् ॥०४-२३-२१॥
bṛhannade kiṃ nu tava sairandhryā kāryam adya vai। yā tvaṃ vasasi kalyāṇi sadā kanyāpure sukham ॥04-23-21॥
[बृहन्नडे (bṛhannade) - O Bṛhannadā; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; सैरन्ध्र्या (sairandhryā) - with Sairandhrī; कार्यम् (kāryam) - purpose; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; या (yā) - who; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वससि (vasasi) - you dwell; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; सदा (sadā) - always; कन्यापुरे (kanyāpure) - in the city of maidens; सुखम् (sukham) - happily;;]
(O Bṛhannadā, what indeed is your purpose with Sairandhrī today? You, O auspicious one, always dwell happily in the city of maidens.)
O Bṛhannadā, what is your purpose with Sairandhrī today? You, O auspicious one, always reside happily in the city of maidens. (04-23-21)
न हि दुःखं समाप्नोषि सैरन्ध्री यदुपाश्नुते। तेन मां दुःखितामेवं पृच्छसे प्रहसन्निव ॥०४-२३-२२॥
na hi duḥkhaṃ samāpnoṣi sairandhrī yad upāśnute। tena māṃ duḥkhitām evaṃ pṛcchase prahasann iva ॥04-23-22॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; दुःखं (duḥkham) - sorrow; समाप्नोषि (samāpnoṣi) - you attain; you obtain; सैरन्ध्री (sairandhrī) - Sairandhrī (proper name, typically Draupadī); यत् (yat) - which; उपाश्नुते (upāśnute) - (she) experiences; attains; तेन (tena) - by that; मां (mām) - me; दुःखिताम् (duḥkhitām) - sorrowful; afflicted; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; पृच्छसे (pṛcchase) - you ask; प्रहसन्निव (prahasann iva) - as if smiling;]
(Not indeed sorrow you obtain, Sairandhrī, which she experiences. By that me sorrowful thus you ask as if smiling.)
Sairandhrī, you do not attain the sorrow that she does. Because of that, you ask me, who am sorrowful, in this way, as if smiling. (04-23-22)
बृहन्नडोवाच॥

Bṛhannaḍa said.
बृहन्नडापि कल्याणि दुःखमाप्नोत्यनुत्तमम्। तिर्यग्योनिगता बाले न चैनामवबुध्यसे ॥०४-२३-२३॥
bṛhannadāpi kalyāṇi duḥkhamāpnotyanuttamam। tiryagyonigatā bāle na caināmavabudhyase ॥04-23-23॥
[बृहन्-नडा (bṛhan-naḍā) - one with enlarged vagina; (hermaphrodite); अपि (api) - even; also; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; pain; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; experiences; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; highest; तिर्यक्-योनि-गता (tiryak-yoni-gatā) - entered into the womb of lower animals (born as animal); बाले (bāle) - O girl; O child; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her; अवबुध्यसे (avabudhyase) - you are discerning; you recognize;]
(Even a hermaphrodite, O auspicious one, obtains unsurpassed suffering; entered into the womb of lower animals, O girl, and you do not recognize her.)
O virtuous girl, even a hermaphrodite experiences the greatest pain, having entered the womb of lower animals, yet you are not able to recognize her. (04-23-23)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः सहैव कन्याभिर्द्रौपदी राजवेश्म तत्। प्रविवेश सुदेष्णायाः समीपमपलायिनी ॥०४-२३-२४॥
tataḥ sahaiva kanyābhir draupadī rājaveśma tat। praviveśa sudeṣṇāyāḥ samīpam apalāyinī ॥04-23-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सहैव (sahaiva) - together with; कन्याभिः (kanyābhiḥ) - with maidens; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; राजवेश्म (rājaveśma) - royal palace; तत् (tat) - that; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; सुदेष्णायाः (sudeṣṇāyāḥ) - of Sudeṣṇā; समीपम् (samīpam) - presence; अपलायिनी (apalāyinī) - not fleeing;]
(Then together with the maidens Draupadī that royal palace entered, of Sudeṣṇā in (her) presence, not fleeing.)
Then, together with the maidens, Draupadī entered that royal palace, approaching Sudeṣṇā without fleeing. (04-23-24)
तामब्रवीद्राजपुत्री विराटवचनादिदम्। सैरन्ध्रि गम्यतां शीघ्रं यत्र कामयसे गतिम् ॥०४-२३-२५॥
tām abravīd rājaputrī virāṭa-vacanāt idam. sairandhri gamyatām śīghram yatra kāmayase gatim ॥04-23-25॥
[ताम् (tām) - to her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (she) said; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; विराट-वचनात् (virāṭa-vacanāt) - by the order of Virāṭa; इदम् (idam) - this; सैरन्ध्रि (sairandhri) - Sairandhri; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - go; शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; यत्र (yatra) - where; कामयसे (kāmayase) - you desire; गतिम् (gatim) - to go;]
(To her the princess said this by the order of Virāṭa: "Sairandhri, go quickly where you desire to go." (04-23-25))
The princess addressed her, saying, on the order of Virāṭa: "Sairandhri, quickly go wherever you wish to go." (04-23-25)
राजा बिभेति भद्रं ते गन्धर्वेभ्यः पराभवात्। त्वं चापि तरुणी सुभ्रु रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ॥०४-२३-२६॥
rājā bibheti bhadraṃ te gandharvebhyaḥ parābhavāt। tvaṃ cāpi taruṇī subhru rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi ॥04-23-26॥
[राजा (rājā) - king; बिभेति (bibheti) - fears; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - well-being; ते (te) - to you; गन्धर्वेभ्यः (gandharvebhyaḥ) - from Gandharvas; पराभवात् (parābhavāt) - from defeat; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तरुणी (taruṇī) - young woman; सुभ्रु (subhru) - of beautiful eyebrows; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in beauty; अप्रतिमा (apratimā) - unrivalled; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(The king fears, 'well-being to you,' from the Gandharvas, from defeat. And you also, young woman of beautiful eyebrows, in beauty are unrivalled on earth.)
The king is afraid, wishing you safety, of defeat at the hands of the Gandharvas; and you too, young lady with lovely eyebrows, are unmatched in beauty on earth. (04-23-26)
सैरन्ध्र्युवाच॥

त्रयोदशाहमात्रं मे राजा क्षमतु भामिनि। कृतकृत्या भविष्यन्ति गन्धर्वास्ते न संशयः ॥०४-२३-२७॥
trayodaśāhamātraṁ me rājā kṣamatu bhāmini। kṛtakṛtyā bhaviṣyanti gandharvāste na saṁśayaḥ॥04-23-27॥
[त्रयोदशाहमात्रम् (trayodaśāhamātram) - for only thirteen days; मे (me) - to me; राजा (rājā) - the king; क्षमतु (kṣamatu) - should forgive; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O beautiful lady; कृतकृत्याः (kṛtakṛtyāḥ) - having their purpose accomplished; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the gandharvas; ते (te) - these; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Let the king forgive me for only thirteen days, O beautiful lady; these gandharvas will become accomplished in their purpose, there is no doubt.)
O beautiful lady, let the king forgive me for only thirteen days; these gandharvas will undoubtedly have accomplished their purpose. (04-23-27)
ततो मां तेऽपनेष्यन्ति करिष्यन्ति च ते प्रियम्। ध्रुवं च श्रेयसा राजा योक्ष्यते सह बान्धवैः ॥०४-२३-२८॥
tato māṃ te'paneṣyanti kariṣyanti ca te priyam। dhruvaṃ ca śreyasā rājā yokṣyate saha bāndhavaiḥ ॥04-23-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; माम् (mām) - me; ते (te) - they; अपनेष्यन्ति (apaneṣyanti) - will take away; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will do; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing (thing); favorite; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; undoubtedly; च (ca) - and; श्रेयसा (śreyasā) - with prosperity; with benefit; राजा (rājā) - the king; योक्ष्यते (yokṣyate) - will be united; will enjoy; will be associated; सह (saha) - with; बान्धवैः (bāndhavaiḥ) - by (his) relatives; with relatives;]
(Then me they will take away, and they will do for you (something) pleasing. Surely, with prosperity, the king will be united with (his) relatives.)
After that, they will take me away and do what is pleasing for you. Certainly, the king will prosper and be united with his relatives. (04-23-28)
