tasmin pure janapade sañjalpo'bhūc ca sarvaśaḥ। śauryād dhi vallabho rājño mahāsattvaś ca kīcakaḥ॥04-24-2॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; पुरे (pure) - city; जनपदे (janapade) - in the country; सञ्जल्पः (sañjalpaḥ) - discussion; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - everywhere; शौर्यात् (śauryāt) - because of valor; हि (hi) - indeed; वल्लभः (vallabhaḥ) - favorite; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; महासत्त्वः (mahāsattvaḥ) - great-souled; च (ca) - and; कीचकः (kīcakaḥ) - Kīcaka;]
(In that city in the country, there arose a discussion everywhere. Because of valor indeed, the favorite of the king and the great-souled was Kīcaka.)
In that city, throughout the country, there was talk everywhere, for because of his valor, Kīcaka was indeed the king's favorite and a great-souled man. (04-24-2)
आसीत्प्रहर्ता च नृणां दारामर्शी च दुर्मतिः। स हतः खलु पापात्मा गन्धर्वैर्दुष्टपूरुषः ॥०४-२४-३॥
āsīt prahartā ca nṛṇāṃ dārām arśī ca durmatiḥ. sa hataḥ khalu pāpātmā gandharvair duṣṭapūruṣaḥ ॥04-24-3॥

(He was a striker and of men the wives coveter, and evil-minded. He was slain indeed, the wicked-souled, by the Gandharvas, the evil man.)

अथ वै धार्तराष्ट्रेण प्रयुक्ता ये बहिश्चराः। मृगयित्वा बहून्ग्रामान्राष्ट्राणि नगराणि च ॥०४-२४-५॥

कृतोऽस्माभिः परो यत्नस्तेषामन्वेषणे सदा। पाण्डवानां मनुष्येन्द्र तस्मिन्महति कानने ॥०४-२४-९॥
kṛto'smābhiḥ paro yatnas teṣām anveṣaṇe sadā। pāṇḍavānāṃ manuṣyendra tasmin mahati kānane ॥04-24-9॥
[कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; accomplished; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; परः (paraḥ) - utmost; highest; यत्नः (yatnaḥ) - effort; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अन्वेषणे (anveṣaṇe) - in search; in seeking; सदा (sadā) - always; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O king of men; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; महति (mahati) - great; vast; कानने (kānane) - forest;]
(Done by us utmost effort of them in search always, of the Pāṇḍavas, O king of men, in that great forest.)
O king of men, our utmost effort has always been made in searching for the Pāṇḍavas in that great forest. (04-24-9)
निर्जने मृगसङ्कीर्णे नानाद्रुमलतावृते। लताप्रतानबहुले नानागुल्मसमावृते ॥०४-२४-१०॥
nirjane mṛga-saṅkīrṇe nānā-druma-latā-vṛte। latā-pratāna-bahule nānā-gulma-samāvṛte॥04-24-10॥
[निर्जने (nirjane) - in a deserted (place); मृगसङ्कीर्णे (mṛga-saṅkīrṇe) - full of wild animals; नानाद्रुमलतावृते (nānā-druma-latā-vṛte) - enclosed by various trees and creepers; लताप्रतानबहुले (latā-pratāna-bahule) - abundant with masses of creepers; नानागुल्मसमावृते (nānā-gulma-samāvṛte) - covered with various shrubs;]
(In a deserted (place), full of wild animals, enclosed by various trees and creepers, abundant with masses of creepers, covered with various shrubs.)
In a deserted place, thick with wild animals, surrounded by many kinds of trees and creepers, dense with entangled vines, and covered by various bushes. (04-24-10)
न च विद्मो गता येन पार्थाः स्युर्दृढविक्रमाः। मार्गमाणाः पदन्यासं तेषु तेषु तथा तथा ॥०४-२४-११॥
na ca vidmo gatā yena pārthāḥ syur dṛḍha-vikramāḥ। mārgamāṇāḥ pada-nyāsaṃ teṣu teṣu tathā tathā ॥04-24-11॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; विद्मः (vidmaḥ) - (we) know; गता (gatāḥ) - gone; येन (yena) - by which; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā; स्युः (syuḥ) - might be; दृढविक्रमाः (dṛḍha-vikramāḥ) - firm in prowess; मार्गमाणाः (mārgamāṇāḥ) - seeking (searching for); पदन्यासं (pada-nyāsam) - footstep; तेषु (teṣu) - among those; तेषु (teṣu) - among those; तथा (tathā) - so; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(And we do not know by which path the sons of Pṛthā, firm in prowess, have gone, seeking footsteps here and there.)

गिरिकूटेषु तुङ्गेषु नानाजनपदेषु च। जनाकीर्णेषु देशेषु खर्वटेषु पुरेषु च ॥०४-२४-१२॥
girikūṭeṣu tuṅgeṣu nānājanapadeṣu ca। janākīrṇeṣu deśeṣu kharvaṭeṣu pureṣu ca ॥04-24-12॥

नरेन्द्र बहुशोऽन्विष्टा नैव विद्मश्च पाण्डवान्। अत्यन्तभावं नष्टास्ते भद्रं तुभ्यं नरर्षभ ॥०४-२४-१३॥
narendra bahuśo-'nviṣṭā naiva vidmaś-ca pāṇḍavān। atyanta-bhāvaṃ naṣṭās-te bhadraṃ tubhyaṃ nararṣabha ॥04-24-13॥
[नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; अन्विष्टाः (anviṣṭāḥ) - have been sought for; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; विद्मः (vidmaḥ) - we know; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; अत्यन्तभावम् (atyanta-bhāvam) - their complete whereabouts; नष्टाः (naṣṭāḥ) - lost; ते (te) - they; भद्रम् (bhadram) - welfare; तुभ्यम् (tubhyaṃ) - to you; नरर्षभ (nararṣabha) - O best of men;]
(O king, many times have been sought for, not indeed we know and the Pāṇḍavas. Their complete whereabouts lost they. Welfare to you, O best of men. (04-24-13))
O king, the Pāṇḍavas have been searched for many times, but we truly do not know them or their complete whereabouts, they are lost. Blessings to you, O best of men. (04-24-13)
वर्त्मान्यन्विष्यमाणास्तु रथानां रथसत्तम। कञ्चित्कालं मनुष्येन्द्र सूतानामनुगा वयम् ॥०४-२४-१४॥
vartmānyanviṣyamāṇāstu rathānāṃ rathasattama। kañcitkālaṃ manuṣyendra sūtānāmanugā vayam ॥04-24-14॥
[वर्त्मानि (vartmāni) - paths; अन्विष्यमाणाः (anviṣyamāṇāḥ) - being searched; तु (tu) - but; रथानाम् (rathānām) - of the chariots; रथसत्तम (rathasattama) - O best of charioteers; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - for some; कालम् (kālam) - time; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O lord of men; सूतानाम् (sūtānām) - of the charioteers; अनुगा (anugā) - following; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(But being searched are the paths of the chariots, O best of charioteers. For some time, O lord of men, we are followers of the charioteers.)

मृगयित्वा यथान्यायं विदितार्थाः स्म तत्त्वतः। प्राप्ता द्वारवतीं सूता ऋते पार्थैः परन्तप ॥०४-२४-१५॥
mṛgayitvā yathā-nyāyaṁ viditārthāḥ sma tattvataḥ। prāptā dvāravatīṁ sūtā ṛte pārthaiḥ parantapa ॥04-24-15॥
[मृगयित्वा (mṛgayitvā) - having sought; यथा न्यायम् (yathā nyāyam) - according to justice; विदितार्थाः (viditārthāḥ) - those who have ascertained the meaning; स्म (sma) - indeed; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - reached; द्वारवतीम् (dvāravatīm) - Dvāravatī (city of Dvārakā); सूता (sūtā) - the charioteers; ऋते (ṛte) - except; पार्थैः (pārthaiḥ) - by the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas); परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(Having sought according to justice, those who had truly ascertained the meaning, indeed, the charioteers except for the sons of Pṛthā, O scorcher of foes, reached Dvāravatī.)
O scorcher of foes, the charioteers, having duly sought out and ascertained the truth, returned to Dvāravatī, except for the Pāṇḍavas. (04-24-15)
न तत्र पाण्डवा राजन्नापि कृष्णा पतिव्रता। सर्वथा विप्रनष्टास्ते नमस्ते भरतर्षभ ॥०४-२४-१६॥
na tatra pāṇḍavā rājan nāpi kṛṣṇā pativratā। sarvathā vipranaṣṭās te namas te bharatarṣabha ॥04-24-16॥
[न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; पाण्डवा (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - even; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); पतिव्रता (pativratā) - chaste to her husband; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - entirely; विप्रनष्टाः (vipranaṣṭāḥ) - completely destroyed; ते (te) - they; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; ते (te) - to you; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Not there the Pāṇḍavas, O king, nor even Kṛṣṇā, the chaste to her husband. Entirely destroyed are they. Salutation to you, O bull among the Bharatas. (04-24-16))
O king, neither the Pāṇḍavas nor Kṛṣṇā, the devoted wife, are there; they are all completely destroyed. Salutations to you, O best of the Bharatas. (04-24-16)
न हि विद्मो गतिं तेषां वासं वापि महात्मनाम्। पाण्डवानां प्रवृत्तिं वा विद्मः कर्मापि वा कृतम् ॥ स नः शाधि मनुष्येन्द्र अत ऊर्ध्वं विशां पते ॥०४-२४-१७॥

(Not indeed we know the movement of them, abode or even of the great-souled ones. Of the Pāṇḍavas activity or we know, action even or done. He, us instruct, O king of men, from here afterwards, O lord of the people. (04-24-17))
Indeed, we do not know the whereabouts or abode of those great-souled ones, nor do we know the actions done or the activity of the Pāṇḍavas. Therefore, O king of men, instruct us as to what should be done next, O lord of the people. (04-24-17)
अन्वेषणे पाण्डवानां भूयः किं करवामहे। इमां च नः प्रियामीक्ष वाचं भद्रवतीं शुभाम् ॥०४-२४-१८॥
anveṣaṇe pāṇḍavānāṁ bhūyaḥ kiṁ karavāmahe। imāṁ ca naḥ priyām īkṣa vācaṁ bhadravatīṁ śubhām ॥04-24-18॥
[अन्वेषणे (anveṣaṇe) - in the search; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; किम् (kim) - what; करवामहे (karavāmahe) - shall we do; इमाम् (imām) - this; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - our; प्रियाम् (priyām) - dear; ईक्ष (īkṣa) - behold; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; भद्रवतीम् (bhadravatīm) - prosperous; शुभाम् (śubhām) - auspicious;]
(In the search for the Pāṇḍavas, again, what shall we do? And behold this our dear, prosperous, auspicious speech.)
While searching for the Pāṇḍavas, what more can we do? And look upon this our dear, fortunate, and auspicious speech. (04-24-18)
येन त्रिगर्ता निकृता बलेन महता नृप। सूतेन राज्ञो मत्स्यस्य कीचकेन महात्मना ॥०४-२४-१९॥
yena trigartā nikṛtā balena mahatā nṛpa। sūtena rājño matsyasya kīcakena mahātmanā ॥04-24-19॥

(By whom the Trigartas were defeated by great strength, O king; by the charioteer of the king of Matsya, by Kīcaka, the great-souled.)
O king, by whom the Trigartas were overcome with great strength—it was by Kīcaka, the charioteer of the king of Matsya, a man of great soul. (04-24-19)
स हतः पतितः शेते गन्धर्वैर्निशि भारत। अदृश्यमानैर्दुष्टात्मा सह भ्रातृभिरच्युत ॥०४-२४-२०॥

प्रियमेतदुपश्रुत्य शत्रूणां तु पराभवम्। कृतकृत्यश्च कौरव्य विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम् ॥०४-२४-२१॥
priyam etad upaśrutya śatrūṇāṃ tu parābhavam। kṛtakṛtyaś ca kauravya vidhatsva yad anantaram ॥04-24-21॥

Having heard this pleasant news—the defeat of the enemies—but being one whose purpose is accomplished, O Kauravya, now do whatever should follow. (04-24-21)
