ततो दुर्योधनो राजा श्रुत्वा तेषां वचस्तदा। चिरमन्तर्मना भूत्वा प्रत्युवाच सभासदः ॥०४-२५-१॥
tato duryodhanaḥ rājā śrutvā teṣāṃ vacas tadā। ciram antarmanā bhūtvā pratyuvāca sabhāsadaḥ ॥04-25-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; राजा (rājā) - king; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; वचः (vacas) - words; तदा (tadā) - then; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; अन्तर्मना (antarmanā) - thoughtful in mind; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - to the assembly-members;]
(Then Duryodhana the king, having heard their words then, having become thoughtful in mind for a long time, replied to the assembly-members.)
Then King Duryodhana, after hearing their words and remaining thoughtful for a long time, replied to the members of the assembly. (04-25-1)
सुदुःखा खलु कार्याणां गतिर्विज्ञातुमन्ततः। तस्मात्सर्वे उदीक्षध्वं क्व नु स्युः पाण्डवा गताः ॥०४-२५-२॥
suduḥkhā khalu kāryāṇāṃ gatirvijñātumantataḥ। tasmātsarve udīkṣadhvaṃ kva nu syuḥ pāṇḍavā gatāḥ॥04-25-2॥
[सुदुःखा (suduḥkhā) - very difficult; खलु (khalu) - indeed; कार्याणाम् (kāryāṇām) - of events; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the course; विज्ञातुम् (vijñātum) - to know; अन्ततः (antataḥ) - in the end; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वे (sarve) - all; उदीक्षध्वं (udīkṣadhvaṃ) - look around; क्व (kva) - where; नु (nu) - indeed; स्युः (syuḥ) - may be; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone;]
(Very difficult indeed the course of events to know in the end. Therefore, all look around where indeed may be the Pāṇḍavas gone.)
It is indeed very difficult to know the outcome of events in the end. Therefore, all of you look around to see where the Pāṇḍavas might have gone. (04-25-2)
अल्पावशिष्टं कालस्य गतभूयिष्ठमन्ततः। तेषामज्ञातचर्यायामस्मिन्वर्षे त्रयोदशे ॥०४-२५-३॥
alpāvaśiṣṭaṃ kālasya gatabhūyiṣṭhamantataḥ। teṣāmajñātacaryāyāmasminvarṣe trayodaśe ॥04-25-3॥
[अल्पावशिष्टं (alpāvaśiṣṭam) - little-remaining; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; गतभूयिष्ठम् (gatabhūyiṣṭham) - passed-much; (the majority has passed) अन्ततः (antataḥ) - in the end; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अज्ञातचर्यायाम् (ajñātacaryāyām) - in (the) unrecognized-going (incognito period); अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; त्रयोदशे (trayodaśe) - thirteenth;]
(Little remaining of time, much has passed in the end; of them, in (the) incognito period, in this thirteenth year.)
Little remains of the time; most of it has already passed; for them, in this thirteenth year of incognito residence. (04-25-3)
अस्य वर्षस्य शेषं चेद्व्यतीयुरिह पाण्डवाः। निवृत्तसमयास्ते हि सत्यव्रतपरायणाः ॥०४-२५-४॥
asya varṣasya śeṣaṁ ced vyatīyur iha pāṇḍavāḥ। nivṛttasamayās te hi satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ ॥04-25-4॥
[अस्य (asya) - of this; वर्षस्य (varṣasya) - year; शेषम् (śeṣam) - the remainder; चेत् (ced) - if; व्यतीयुः (vyatīyuḥ) - they pass; इह (iha) - here; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; निवृत्तसमयाः (nivṛttasamayāḥ) - those whose time is finished; ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; सत्यव्रतपरायणाः (satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to true vows;]
(If the Pāṇḍavas pass here the remainder of this year, those whose time is finished, indeed, they are devoted to true vows.)
If the Pāṇḍavas spend the remainder of this year here, then, as their period (of exile) is over, they are truly devoted to their vows. (04-25-4)
क्षरन्त इव नागेन्द्राः सर्व आशीविषोपमाः। दुःखा भवेयुः संरब्धाः कौरवान्प्रति ते ध्रुवम् ॥०४-२५-५॥
kṣaranta iva nāgendraāḥ sarva āśīviṣopamāḥ। duḥkhā bhaveyuḥ saṃrabdhāḥ kauravān prati te dhruvam ॥04-25-5॥
[क्षरन्त (kṣaranta) - flowing; इव (iva) - as if; नागेन्द्राः (nāgendraāḥ) - kings of serpents; सर्व (sarva) - all; आशीविषोपमाः (āśīviṣopamāḥ) - like venomous snakes; दुःखा (duḥkhā) - bringing pain; भवेयुः (bhaveyuḥ) - would be; संरब्धाः (saṃrabdhāḥ) - enraged; कौरवान् (kauravān) - towards the Kauravas; प्रति (prati) - towards; ते (te) - they; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly;]
(Flowing as if kings of serpents, all like venomous snakes, bringing pain, would be enraged towards the Kauravas, they certainly.)
They would certainly be enraged towards the Kauravas, flowing as if kings among serpents, all resembling venomous snakes and bringing pain. (04-25-5)
अर्वाक्कालस्य विज्ञाताः कृच्छ्ररूपधराः पुनः। प्रविशेयुर्जितक्रोधास्तावदेव पुनर्वनम् ॥०४-२५-६॥
arvāk-kālasya vijñātāḥ kṛcchra-rūpa-dharāḥ punaḥ। praviśeyur-jita-krodhās tāvad-eva punar-vanam॥04-25-6॥
[अर्वाक्कालस्य (arvāk-kālasya) - of the imminent time; of the approaching time; विज्ञाताः (vijñātāḥ) - having been known; perceiving; कृच्छ्ररूपधराः (kṛcchra-rūpa-dharāḥ) - assuming the form of difficulty; embodying hardship; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रविशेयुः (praviśeyuḥ) - would enter; जितक्रोधाः (jita-krodhāḥ) - those whose anger is conquered; who have restrained anger; तावदेव (tāvad-eva) - just then; at that very moment; पुनर्वनम् (punar-vanam) - again (into the) forest;]
(Having known of the approaching time, assuming the form of hardship again, those who have conquered anger would enter just then again (into the) forest.)
As soon as they perceived the imminent time bringing hardships again, those who had conquered anger would once more enter the forest at that very moment. (04-25-6)
तस्मात्क्षिप्रं बुभुत्सध्वं यथा नोऽत्यन्तमव्ययम्। राज्यं निर्द्वन्द्वमव्यग्रं निःसपत्नं चिरं भवेत् ॥०४-२५-७॥
tasmātkṣipraṁ bubhutsadhvaṁ yathā no’tyantamavyayam। rājyaṁ nirdvandvamavyagraṁ niḥsapatnaṁ ciraṁ bhavet ॥04-25-7॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; बुभुत्सध्वं (bubhutsadhvam) - you all desire to gain; यथा (yathā) - so that; नः (naḥ) - our; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - utterly; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - undecaying; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; निर्द्वन्द्वम् (nirdvandvam) - free from dualities; अव्यग्रम् (avyagram) - without agitation; निःसपत्नम् (niḥsapatnam) - free from enemies; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be;]
(Therefore, quickly desire to gain, so that our utterly undecaying kingdom, free from dualities, without agitation, without enemies, for a long time may be.)
Therefore, quickly strive so that our kingdom may be utterly everlasting, free from conflict, without agitation, devoid of enemies, and enduring for a long time. (04-25-7)
अथाब्रवीत्ततः कर्णः क्षिप्रं गच्छन्तु भारत। अन्ये धूर्ततरा दक्षा निभृताः साधुकारिणः ॥०४-२५-८॥
athābravīttataḥ karṇaḥ kṣipraṃ gacchantu bhārata। anye dhūrtatarā dakṣā nibhṛtāḥ sādhukāriṇaḥ ॥04-25-8॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तः (tataḥ) - thereupon; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; गच्छन्तु (gacchantu) - let them go; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; अन्ये (anye) - others; धूर्ततरा (dhūrtatarā) - more cunning; दक्षा (dakṣā) - skilled; निभृताः (nibhṛtāḥ) - reserved; साधुकारिणः (sādhukāriṇaḥ) - doers of good deeds;]
(Then said thereupon Karṇa: Quickly let them go, O descendant of Bharata. Others, more cunning, skilled, reserved, doers of good deeds.)
Then Karṇa said: Let them go quickly, O Bhārata. Others are more cunning, skilled, reserved, and doers of good deeds. (04-25-8)
चरन्तु देशान्संवीताः स्फीताञ्जनपदाकुलान्। तत्र गोष्ठीष्वथान्यासु सिद्धप्रव्रजितेषु च ॥०४-२५-९॥
carantu deśān saṁvītāḥ sphītān janapadākulān। tatra goṣṭhīṣv athānyāsu siddha-pravrajiteṣu ca ॥04-25-9॥
[चरन्तु (carantu) - let them move; let them wander; देशान् (deśān) - regions; countries; संवीताः (saṁvītāḥ) - enveloped; accompanied; स्फीतान् (sphītān) - prosperous; thriving; जनपदाकुलान् (janapadākulān) - crowded with people; teeming with settlements; तत्र (tatra) - there; गोष्ठीषु (goṣṭhīṣu) - assemblies; gatherings; अथ (atha) - then; and; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - other; different; आसु (āsu) - in those; सिद्धप्रव्रजितेषु (siddha-pravrajiteṣu) - in (places) of accomplished mendicants; among perfected ascetics; च (ca) - and;]
(Let them wander the regions, accompanied by (people), prosperous and crowded with settlements. There, in assemblies and in other (places), and among accomplished mendicants.)
Let them wander throughout regions filled with prosperous and populous settlements. There, in assemblies and elsewhere, and among accomplished mendicants too. (04-25-9)
परिचारेषु तीर्थेषु विविधेष्वाकरेषु च। विज्ञातव्या मनुष्यैस्तैस्तर्कया सुविनीतया ॥०४-२५-१०॥
paricāreṣu tīrtheṣu vividheṣvākareṣu ca। vijñātavyā manuṣyaistaistarkayā suvinītayā ॥04-25-10॥
[परिचारेषु (paricāreṣu) - in services;, तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - in holy places;, विविधेषु (vividheṣu) - in various;, आकरेषु (ākareṣu) - in sources;, च (ca) - and;, विज्ञातव्या (vijñātavyā) - should be known;, मनुष्यैः (manuṣyaiḥ) - by humans;, तैः (taiḥ) - by those;, तर्कया (tarkayā) - with reasoning;, सुविनीतया (suvinītayā) - with right conduct;]
(In services, in holy places, in various sources, and, what should be known by humans by those with reasoning and with right conduct.)
That which should be known by humans is to be determined, with proper reasoning and right conduct, in services, holy places, and various sources. (04-25-10)
विविधैस्तत्परैः सम्यक्तज्ज्ञैर्निपुणसंवृतैः। अन्वेष्टव्याश्च निपुणं पाण्डवाश्छन्नवासिनः ॥०४-२५-११॥
vividhaiḥ tat-paraiḥ samyak-tad-jñaiḥ nipuṇa-saṁvṛtaiḥ। anveṣṭavyāś ca nipuṇaṁ pāṇḍavāś channa-vāsinaḥ ॥04-25-11॥
[विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; तत्परैः (tat-paraiḥ) - by those devoted to that (task); सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; तज्ज्ञैः (tad-jñaiḥ) - by those knowing that; निपुणसंवृतैः (nipuṇa-saṁvṛtaiḥ) - accompanied by experts; अन्वेष्टव्याः (anveṣṭavyāḥ) - ought to be searched; च (ca) - and; निपुणं (nipuṇam) - skillfully; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; छन्नवासिनः (channa-vāsinaḥ) - those dwelling in concealment;]
(By various (people) devoted to that, properly by those who know that, accompanied by experts, the Pāṇḍavas, those dwelling in concealment, ought to be searched skillfully and.)
By various persons devoted to that task, who properly know of it, and who are accompanied by experts, the Pāṇḍavas dwelling in hiding must be carefully searched for. (04-25-11)
नदीकुञ्जेषु तीर्थेषु ग्रामेषु नगरेषु च। आश्रमेषु च रम्येषु पर्वतेषु गुहासु च ॥०४-२५-१२॥
nadīkuñjeṣu tīrtheṣu grāmeṣu nagareṣu ca. āśrameṣu ca ramyeṣu parvateṣu guhāsu ca ॥04-25-12॥
[नदीकुञ्जेषु (nadīkuñjeṣu) - in the groves of rivers; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - at the sacred fords; ग्रामेषु (grāmeṣu) - in villages; नगरेषु (nagareṣu) - in cities; च (ca) - and; आश्रमेषु (āśrameṣu) - in hermitages; च (ca) - and; रम्येषु (ramyeṣu) - in delightful (places); पर्वतेषु (parvateṣu) - in mountains; गुहासु (guhāsu) - in caves; च (ca) - and;]
(In the groves of rivers, at the sacred fords, in villages, in cities, and in hermitages, and in delightful (places), in mountains, in caves, and.)
In the groves by rivers, at sacred fords, in villages, in cities, in hermitages, in delightful places, in mountains, and in caves. (4-25-12)
अथाग्रजानन्तरजः पापभावानुरागिणम्। ज्येष्ठं दुःशासनस्तत्र भ्राता भ्रातरमब्रवीत् ॥०४-२५-१३॥
athāgrajānantarajaḥ pāpabhāvānurāgiṇam। jyeṣṭhaṃ duḥśāsanastatra bhrātā bhrātaramabravīt ॥04-25-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अग्रज-अनन्तरजः (agraja-anantarajaḥ) - one born immediately after the eldest; पापभाव-अनुरागिणम् (pāpa-bhāva-anurāgiṇam) - attached to evil nature; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; तत्र (tatra) - there; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - to (his) brother; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then, the one born immediately after the eldest, attached to evil nature, the eldest Duḥśāsana there, brother to brother said.)
Then Duḥśāsana, the brother born immediately after the eldest and attached to evil intentions, spoke to his eldest brother there. (04-25-13)
एतच्च कर्णो यत्प्राह सर्वमीक्षामहे तथा। यथोद्दिष्टं चराः सर्वे मृगयन्तु ततस्ततः ॥ एते चान्ये च भूयांसो देशाद्देशं यथाविधि ॥०४-२५-१४॥
etacca karṇo yatprāha sarvam īkṣāmahe tathā। yathoddiṣṭaṃ carāḥ sarve mṛgayantu tatastataḥ ॥ ete ca anye ca bhūyāṃso deśād deśaṃ yathāvidhi ॥04-25-14॥
[एतच्च (etacca) - and this; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; यत् (yat) - what; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; ईक्षामहे (īkṣāmahe) - let us observe; तथा (tathā) - thus; यथोद्दिष्टम् (yathoddiṣṭam) - as instructed; चराः (carāḥ) - scouts; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मृगयन्तु (mṛgayantu) - let them seek; ततः (tataḥ) - here and there; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; भूयांसः (bhūyāṃsaḥ) - many more; देशात् (deśāt) - from region; देशम् (deśam) - to region; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rule;]
(And this Karṇa, what (he) spoke, all let us observe thus. As instructed scouts all let them seek here and there. These and others, many more, from region to region as per rule.)
And as Karṇa has spoken, let us observe everything accordingly. Let all the scouts search everywhere as instructed. These and many other men also should proceed from region to region according to rule. (04-25-14)
न तु तेषां गतिर्वासः प्रवृत्तिश्चोपलभ्यते। अत्याहितं वा गूढास्ते पारं वोर्मिमतो गताः ॥०४-२५-१५॥
na tu teṣāṃ gatirvāsaḥ pravṛttiścopalabhyate। atyāhitaṃ vā gūḍhāste pāraṃ vormimato gatāḥ॥04-25-15॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; गतिः (gatiḥ) - course; वासः (vāsaḥ) - dwelling; प्रवृत्तिः (pravṛttiḥ) - activity; च (ca) - and; उपलभ्यते (upalabhyate) - is obtained; अत्याहितं (atyāhitaṃ) - highly placed; वा (vā) - or; गूढाः (gūḍhāḥ) - hidden; ते (te) - they; पारम् (pāram) - other shore; वोर्मिमतः (vormimataḥ) - of the surging (sea/wave); गताः (gatāḥ) - have reached;]
(But of them, course, dwelling, or activity is not obtained; highly placed or hidden, they have reached the other shore of the surging (sea).)
But for them, neither their course, their dwelling, nor their activity can be ascertained; whether they are highly placed or hidden, they have crossed to the other shore of the surging sea. (04-25-15)
व्यालैर्वापि महारण्ये भक्षिताः शूरमानिनः। अथ वा विषमं प्राप्य विनष्टाः शाश्वतीः समाः ॥०४-२५-१६॥
vyālair vāpi mahāraṇye bhakṣitāḥ śūramāninaḥ। atha vā viṣamaṃ prāpya vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ॥04-25-16॥
[व्यालैः (vyālaiḥ) - by wild beasts; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; महारण्ये (mahāraṇye) - in the great forest; भक्षिताः (bhakṣitāḥ) - devoured; शूरमानिनः (śūramāninaḥ) - those who consider themselves brave; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; विषमं (viṣamam) - danger; hardship; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; विनष्टाः (vinaṣṭāḥ) - perished; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; lasting; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(By wild beasts or also in the great forest, devoured (are) those who consider themselves brave; or, having reached danger, (they have) perished for eternal years.)
Those who considered themselves brave were either devoured by wild beasts in the great forest or, having encountered danger, have perished for all time. (04-25-16)
तस्मान्मानसमव्यग्रं कृत्वा त्वं कुरुनन्दन। कुरु कार्यं यथोत्साहं मन्यसे यन्नराधिप ॥०४-२५-१७॥
tasmān mānasam-avyagraṁ kṛtvā tvaṁ kurunandana। kuru kāryaṁ yathotsāhaṁ manyase yan narādhipa ॥04-25-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मानसं (mānasam) - mind; अव्यग्रम् (avyagram) - undisturbed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kuru (clan); कुरु (kuru) - do; कार्यं (kāryam) - duty; यथोत्साहम् (yathotsāham) - with enthusiasm; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; यत् (yat) - which; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(Therefore, having made the mind undisturbed, you, O joy of the Kurus, do the duty with enthusiasm, which you think, O lord of men.)
Therefore, O Kurunandana, compose your mind and calmly perform such duties as you think right with enthusiasm, O lord of men. (04-25-17)
