अथाब्रवीन्महावीर्यो द्रोणस्तत्त्वार्थदर्शिवान्। न तादृशा विनश्यन्ति नापि यान्ति पराभवम् ॥०४-२६-१॥
athābravīn mahāvīryo droṇas tattvārthadarśivān। na tādṛśā vinaśyanti nāpi yānti parābhavam ॥04-26-1॥
[अथा (athā) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great might; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; तत्त्वार्थदर्शिवान् (tattvārthadarśivān) - one who perceives the true nature; न (na) - not; तादृशाः (tādṛśāḥ) - such ones; विनश्यन्ति (vinaśyanti) - are destroyed; नापि (nāpi) - nor; यान्ति (yānti) - go; पराभवम् (parābhavam) - to defeat; to disgrace;]
(Then said the great-mighty Droṇa, perceiver of the true nature: Such ones are not destroyed nor do they go to defeat.)
Then the greatly powerful Droṇa, who perceives the true essence, said: Such as these are neither destroyed nor do they meet defeat. (04-26-1)
शूराश्च कृतविद्याश्च बुद्धिमन्तो जितेन्द्रियाः। धर्मज्ञाश्च कृतज्ञाश्च धर्मराजमनुव्रताः ॥०४-२६-२॥
śūrāś ca kṛtavidyāś ca buddhimanto jitendriyāḥ। dharmajñāś ca kṛtajñāś ca dharmarājamanuvratāḥ ॥04-26-2॥
[शूराः (śūrāḥ) - valiant; च (ca) - and; कृतविद्याः (kṛtavidyāḥ) - accomplished in knowledge; च (ca) - and; बुद्धिमन्तः (buddhimantaḥ) - intelligent; जितेन्द्रियाः (jitendriyāḥ) - having mastered the senses; धर्मज्ञाः (dharmajñāḥ) - knowers of dharma; च (ca) - and; कृतज्ञाः (kṛtajñāḥ) - grateful; च (ca) - and; धर्मराजमनुव्रताः (dharmarājam-anuvratāḥ) - devoted to the King of Dharma;]
(Valiant and accomplished in knowledge and intelligent, having mastered the senses, knowers of dharma and grateful, and devoted to the King of Dharma.)
Valiant, learned, intelligent, self-controlled, knowers of righteousness, grateful, and devoted to the King of Righteousness. (04-26-2)
नीतिधर्मार्थतत्त्वज्ञं पितृवच्च समाहितम्। धर्मे स्थितं सत्यधृतिं ज्येष्ठं ज्येष्ठापचायिनम् ॥०४-२६-३॥
nīti-dharmārtha-tattva-jñaṃ pitṛ-vac ca samāhitam। dharme sthitaṃ satya-dhṛtiṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ jyeṣṭhāpacāyinam॥04-26-3॥
[नीतिधर्मार्थतत्त्वज्ञं (nīti-dharmārtha-tattva-jñam) - knower of the principles of morality, righteousness, and purpose; पितृवत् (pitṛ-vat) - like a father; च (ca) - and; समाहितम् (samāhitam) - composed; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; स्थितम् (sthitam) - established; सत्यधृतिं (satya-dhṛtim) - firm in truth; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - elder; ज्येष्ठापचायिनम् (jyeṣṭhāpacāyinam) - one who honors the elders;]
(The knower of the principles of morality, righteousness, and purpose, composed like a father, established in righteousness, possessing firmness in truth, the elder, honoring elders.)
He who knows the principles of morality, righteousness, and purpose, composed like a father, established in righteousness, truthful and firm, the elder, and one who honors elders. (04-26-3)
अनुव्रता महात्मानं भ्रातरं भ्रातरो नृप। अजातशत्रुं ह्रीमन्तं तं च भ्रातॄननुव्रतम् ॥०४-२६-४॥
anuvratā mahātmānaṃ bhrātaraṃ bhrātaro nṛpa। ajātaśatruṃ hrīmantam taṃ ca bhrātṝn-anuvratam ॥04-26-4॥
[अनुव्रता (anuvratā) - obedient; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled; भ्रातरं (bhrātaram) - brother; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; नृप (nṛpa) - king; अजातशत्रुं (ajātaśatrum) - Ajātaśatru (one whose enemies are unborn); ह्रीमन्तं (hrīmantam) - modest; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; अनुव्रतम् (anuvratam) - obedient;]
(Obedient, the brothers, O king, (towards) the great-souled brother, Ajātaśatru, modest, him and the obedient brothers.)
O king, the brothers were obedient to their great-souled brother, Ajātaśatru, who was modest, and to those obedient brothers as well. (04-26-4)
तेषां तथा विधेयानां निभृतानां महात्मनाम्। किमर्थं नीतिमान्पार्थः श्रेयो नैषां करिष्यति ॥०४-२६-५॥
teṣāṃ tathā vidheyānāṃ nibhṛtānāṃ mahātmanām। kimarthaṃ nītimān pārthaḥ śreyo naiṣāṃ kariṣyati॥04-26-5॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; तथा (tathā) - in that way; विधेयानां (vidheyānām) - obedient ones; निभृतानां (nibhṛtānām) - calm ones; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - great-souled ones; किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; नीतिमान् (nītimān) - righteous; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - betterment; नैषां (naiṣām) - for these; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(Of them, in that way, of the obedient, of the calm, of the great-souled, for what reason will the righteous Pārtha do betterment for these?)
For those who are obedient, calm, and great-souled in this way, for what reason would the righteous Pārtha do anything better for them? (04-26-5)
तस्माद्यत्नात्प्रतीक्षन्ते कालस्योदयमागतम्। न हि ते नाशमृच्छेयुरिति पश्याम्यहं धिया ॥०४-२६-६॥
tasmādyatnātp pratīkṣante kālasya udayam āgatam। na hi te nāśam ṛccheyur iti paśyāmi ahaṃ dhiyā॥04-26-6॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; यत्नात् (yatnāt) - with effort; प्रतीक्षन्ते (pratīkṣante) - they wait; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; उदयम् (udayam) - the arising; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they; नाशम् (nāśam) - destruction; ऋच्छेयुः (ṛccheyuḥ) - might attain; इति (iti) - thus; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; अहम् (aham) - I; धिया (dhiyā) - by understanding;]
(Therefore with effort they wait for the arrival of the arising of time. Not indeed do they attain destruction, thus I see by (my) understanding.)
Therefore, with effort, they wait for the arising of the destined time's arrival. Indeed, I see by my understanding that they do not meet with destruction. (04-26-6)
साम्प्रतं चैव यत्कार्यं तच्च क्षिप्रमकालिकम्। क्रियतां साधु सञ्चिन्त्य वासश्चैषां प्रचिन्त्यताम् ॥०४-२६-७॥
sāmprataṃ caiva yatkāryaṃ tacca kṣipram akālikam। kriyatāṃ sādhu sañcintya vāsaś caiṣāṃ pracintyatām॥04-26-7॥
[साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यत् (yat) - which; कार्यं (kāryam) - task; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अकालिकम् (akālikam) - not delayed; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; साधु (sādhu) - well; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - after careful consideration; वासः (vāsaḥ) - dwelling; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; प्रचिन्त्यताम् (pracintyatām) - let it be considered;]
(At present and indeed, which task, that and quickly not delayed, let it be done well after careful consideration, and the dwelling of these ones let it also be considered.)
Let whatever task is at hand now—and is urgent and cannot wait—be accomplished properly after careful consideration. Let the accommodation of these people also be duly considered. (04-26-7)
यथावत्पाण्डुपुत्राणां सर्वार्थेषु धृतात्मनाम्। दुर्ज्ञेयाः खलु शूरास्ते अपापास्तपसा वृताः ॥०४-२६-८॥
yathāvat pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ sarvārtheṣu dhṛtātmanām। durjñeyāḥ khalu śūrās te apāpās tapasā vṛtāḥ॥04-26-8॥
[यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; in proper manner; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; सर्वार्थेषु (sarvārtheṣu) - in all matters; धृतात्मनाम् (dhṛtātmanām) - of the resolute ones; (whose self is steadfast;) दुर्ज्ञेयाः (durjñeyāḥ) - difficult to know; difficult to comprehend; खलु (khalu) - indeed; truly; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; valiant ones; ते (te) - they; अपापाः (apāpāḥ) - sinless; without fault; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; वृताः (vṛtāḥ) - surrounded; endowed;]
(As it is, of the sons of Pāṇḍu, in all matters, of the resolute ones—difficult to understand indeed are those heroes, they are sinless, endowed with austerity.)
Truly, in every matter, those resolute sons of Pāṇḍu are difficult to comprehend—their heroism is remarkable, and they are sinless, endowed with austerity. (4-26-8)
शुद्धात्मा गुणवान्पार्थः सत्यवान्नीतिमाञ्शुचिः। तेजोराशिरसङ्ख्येयो गृह्णीयादपि चक्षुषी ॥०४-२६-९॥
śuddhātmā guṇavān pārthaḥ satyavān nītimān śuciḥ। tejorāśiḥ asaṅkhyeyaḥ gṛhṇīyāt api cakṣuṣī ॥04-26-9॥
[शुद्धात्मा (śuddhātmā) - pure-souled; गुणवान् (guṇavān) - endowed with virtues; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna, son of Prithā); सत्यवान् (satyavān) - truthful; नीतिमान् (nītimān) - upright; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; तेजराशिः (tejorāśiḥ) - a mass of light; असङ्ख्येयः (asaṅkhyeyaḥ) - immeasurable; गृह्णीयात् (gṛhṇīyāt) - may he take; अपि (api) - even; चक्षुषी (cakṣuṣī) - the eyes;]
(Pure-souled, endowed with virtues, Pārtha, truthful, upright, pure, a mass of light, immeasurable, may even take the eyes.)
Pārtha (Arjuna), who is pure-souled, virtuous, truthful, upright, and pure, is a mass of immeasurable light; he would even accept the eyes. (04-26-9)
विज्ञाय क्रियतां तस्माद्भूयश्च मृगयामहे। ब्राह्मणैश्चारकैः सिद्धैर्ये चान्ये तद्विदो जनाः ॥०४-२६-१०॥
vijñāya kriyatāṁ tasmādbhūyaśca mṛgayāmahe। brāhmaṇaiścārakaiḥ siddhairye cānye tadvido janāḥ॥ 04-26-10॥
[विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; मृगयामहे (mṛgayāmahe) - let us search; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; चारकैः (cārakaiḥ) - by spies; सिद्धैः (siddhaiḥ) - by accomplished ones; ये (ye) - those who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; तद्विदः (tadvidaḥ) - who know that; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(Having understood, let it be done therefore; again, let us search by Brāhmaṇas, by spies, by the accomplished ones, and by other people who know that.)
Therefore, having understood, let it be done; and again let us search with Brāhmaṇas, spies, accomplished men, and other people who know about this. (04-26-10)
