ततः शान्तनवो भीष्मो भरतानां पितामहः। श्रुतवान्देशकालज्ञस्तत्त्वज्ञः सर्वधर्मवित् ॥०४-२७-१॥
tataḥ śāntanavo bhīṣmo bharatānāṃ pitāmahaḥ। śrutavān deśakālajñaḥ tattvajñaḥ sarvadharmavit ॥04-27-1॥

Then Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, grandfather of the Bharatas, learned in all scriptures, knowing time and place, a knower of the essence, and knowledgeable in all dharmas, (spoke thus). (04-27-1)
आचार्यवाक्योपरमे तद्वाक्यमभिसंदधत्। हितार्थं स उवाचेमां भारतीं भारतान्प्रति ॥०४-२७-२॥

युधिष्ठिरे समासक्तां धर्मज्ञे धर्मसंश्रिताम्। असत्सु दुर्लभां नित्यं सतां चाभिमतां सदा ॥ भीष्मः समवदत्तत्र गिरं साधुभिरर्चिताम् ॥०४-२७-३॥
yudhiṣṭhire samāsaktāṃ dharmajñe dharmasaṃśritām। asatsu durlabhāṃ nityaṃ satāṃ cābhimatāṃ sadā॥ bhīṣmaḥ samavadattatra giraṃ sādhubhirarcitām॥04-27-3॥
[युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - in Yudhiṣṭhira; समासक्तां (samāsaktāṃ) - attached; धर्मज्ञे (dharmajñe) - to the knower of dharma; धर्मसंश्रिताम् (dharmasaṃśritām) - resorted to dharma; असत्सु (asatsu) - among the unworthy; दुर्लभां (durlabhāṃ) - difficult to attain; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; सतां (satāṃ) - of the virtuous; च (ca) - and; अभिमतां (abhimatāṃ) - desired; सदा (sadā) - always; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; समवदत्तत्र (samavadattatra) - spoke there; गिरं (giraṃ) - speech; साधुभिरर्चिताम् (sādhubhirarcitām) - honored by the virtuous;]
(In Yudhiṣṭhira, attached, to the knower of dharma, resorted to dharma, among the unworthy difficult to attain, always of the virtuous and always desired; Bhīṣma spoke there speech honored by the virtuous.)
Bhīṣma there uttered words, honored by the virtuous, about that quality — which, attached to Yudhiṣṭhira, who knows dharma, rests in dharma, is always difficult to find among the unworthy, and always cherished by the virtuous. (04-27-3)
यथैष ब्राह्मणः प्राह द्रोणः सर्वार्थतत्त्ववित्। सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्ना नाशं नार्हन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥०४-२७-४॥
yathaiṣa brāhmaṇaḥ prāha droṇaḥ sarvārthatattvavit। sarvalakṣaṇasampannā nāśaṃ nārhanti pāṇḍavāḥ ॥04-27-4॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; सर्व-अर्थ-तत्त्व-वित् (sarva-artha-tattva-vit) - knower of the true essence of all objects; सर्व-लक्षण-सम्पन्नाः (sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampannāḥ) - endowed with all marks; नाशम् (nāśam) - destruction; न (na) - not; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - deserve; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(As this brāhmaṇa Drona, knower of the true essence of all objects, spoke: The Pāṇḍavas, endowed with all marks, do not deserve destruction.)
As this brāhmaṇa Drona, who knows the essence of all things, has said: 'The Pāṇḍavas, endowed with all auspicious marks, do not deserve to be destroyed.' (4-27-4)
श्रुतवृत्तोपसम्पन्नाः साधुव्रतसमन्विताः। वृद्धानुशासने मग्नाः सत्यव्रतपरायणाः ॥०४-२७-५॥
śrutavṛttopasampannāḥ sādhuvratasamanvitāḥ। vṛddhānuśāsane magnāḥ satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ॥04-27-5॥
[श्रुत-वृत्त-उपसम्पन्नाः (śruta-vṛtta-upasampannāḥ) - endowed with learned conduct; साधु-व्रत-समन्विताः (sādhu-vrata-samanvitāḥ) - possessed of good vows; वृद्ध-अनुशासने (vṛddha-anuśāsane) - in the instruction of elders; मग्नाः (magnāḥ) - absorbed; सत्य-व्रत-परायणाः (satya-vrata-parāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to truthfulness in vows;]
(Endowed with learned conduct, possessed of good vows, absorbed in the instruction of elders, devoted to truthfulness in vows.)
They are endowed with learned conduct, possess good vows, are immersed in the instruction of elders, and are devoted to truthfulness in their vows. (04-27-5)
समयं समयज्ञास्ते पालयन्तः शुचिव्रताः। नावसीदितुमर्हन्ति उद्वहन्तः सतां धुरम् ॥०४-२७-६॥
samayaṃ samayajñās te pālayantaḥ śucivratāḥ। nāvasīditum arhanti udvahantaḥ satāṃ dhuram ॥04-27-6॥
[समयं (samayaṃ) - the appointed time; समयज्ञाः (samayajñāḥ) - knowers of the time; ते (te) - they; पालयन्तः (pālayantaḥ) - observing; शुचिव्रताः (śucivratāḥ) - of pure vows; न (na) - not; अवसीदितुम् (avasīditum) - to sink down; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - are fit; उद्वहन्तः (udvahantaḥ) - bearing; सतां (satām) - of the good; धुरम् (dhuram) - the burden;]
(The appointed time, knowers of the time, they, observing, of pure vows, not to sink down, are fit, bearing the burden of the good.)
Those who know the proper time, are of pure vows and keep their observances, bearing the burden of the virtuous, are not fit to become despondent. (04-27-6)
धर्मतश्चैव गुप्तास्ते स्ववीर्येण च पाण्डवाः। न नाशमधिगच्छेयुरिति मे धीयते मतिः ॥०४-२७-७॥
dharmataś caiva guptās te svavīryeṇa ca pāṇḍavāḥ। na nāśam adhigaccheyur iti me dhīyate matiḥ॥04-27-7॥
[धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - by righteousness; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गुप्ताः (guptāḥ) - protected; ते (te) - they; स्ववीर्येण (svavīryeṇa) - by their own strength; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; न (na) - not; नाशम् (nāśam) - destruction; अधिगच्छेयुः (adhigaccheyuḥ) - would attain; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; धीयते (dhīyate) - is held; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(By righteousness and indeed protected, they, by their own strength and the Pāṇḍavas, would not attain destruction—thus my opinion is held.)
The Pāṇḍavas, being protected both by righteousness and their own strength, will not meet destruction—this is the opinion I hold. (04-27-7)
तत्र बुद्धिं प्रणेष्यामि पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत। न तु नीतिः सुनीतस्य शक्यतेऽन्वेषितुं परैः ॥०४-२७-८॥
tatra buddhiṃ praṇeṣyāmi pāṇḍavānprati bhārata. na tu nītiḥ sunītasya śakyate’nveṣituṃ paraiḥ ॥04-27-8॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - plan; प्रणेष्यामि (praṇeṣyāmi) - I will send forth; पाण्डवान्प्रति (pāṇḍavān prati) - toward the Pāṇḍavas; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; नीतिः (nītiḥ) - policy; सुनीतस्य (sunītasya) - of the well-conducted; शक्यते (śakyate) - is able; अन्वेषितुं (anveṣitum) - to be discovered; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others;]
(There plan I will send forth toward the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata. But the policy of the well-conducted is not able to be discovered by others.)
O Bhārata, there I will devise a plan concerning the Pāṇḍavas. But the strategy of a wise person cannot be detected by others. (04-27-8)
यत्तु शक्यमिहास्माभिस्तान्वै सञ्चिन्त्य पाण्डवान्। बुद्ध्या प्रवक्तुं न द्रोहात्प्रवक्ष्यामि निबोध तत् ॥०४-२७-९॥
yattu śakyam ihāsmābhis tān vai sañcintya pāṇḍavān। buddhyā pravaktuṃ na drohāt pravakṣyāmi nibodha tat॥ 04-27-9॥
[यत् (yat) - what; तु (tu) - but; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; इह (iha) - here; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; तान् (tān) - those; वै (vai) - indeed; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - with intelligence; प्रवक्तुं (pravaktum) - to declare; न (na) - not; द्रोहात् (drohāt) - out of hostility; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I will tell; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; तत् (tat) - that;]
(But what here is possible for us, those Pāṇḍavas having considered indeed, with intelligence to declare, not out of hostility I will tell—understand that.)
But what can be done by us here, having thoroughly considered the Pāṇḍavas, that I will tell you with intelligence, not out of malice—understand this. (04-27-9)
सा त्वियं साधु वक्तव्या न त्वनीतिः कथञ्चन। वृद्धानुशासने तात तिष्ठतः सत्यशीलिनः ॥०४-२७-१०॥
sā tviyaṃ sādhu vaktavyā na tvanītiḥ kathañcana। vṛddhānuśāsane tāta tiṣṭhataḥ satyaśīlinaḥ ॥04-27-10॥
[सा (sā) - she; त्वियं (tviyaṃ) - truly this; साधु (sādhu) - properly; वक्तव्या (vaktavyā) - should be spoken; न (na) - not; त्व (tva) - your; नीतिः (nītiḥ) - conduct; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - by any means; वृद्धानुशासने (vṛddhānuśāsane) - in the instruction of elders; तात (tāta) - dear father; तिष्ठतः (tiṣṭhataḥ) - standing; सत्यशीलिनः (satyaśīlinaḥ) - truthful in character;]
(She truly this should be spoken properly, not your conduct by any means, in the instruction of elders, dear father, standing, truthful in character.)
She indeed must be properly spoken thus, and never should your conduct (be otherwise), O dear father, when remaining under the guidance of elders, being truthful in character. (04-27-10)
अवश्यं त्विह धीरेण सतां मध्ये विवक्षता। यथामति विवक्तव्यं सर्वशो धर्मलिप्सया ॥०४-२७-११॥
avaśyaṁ tv iha dhīreṇa satāṁ madhye vivakṣatā। yathāmati vivaktavyaṁ sarvaśo dharmalipsayā ॥04-27-11॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - necessarily; तु (tu) - but; इह (iha) - here; धीरेण (dhīreṇa) - by the wise; सतां (satām) - of the good (people); मध्ये (madhye) - among; विवक्षता (vivakṣatā) - with the desire to speak; यथामति (yathāmati) - according to (one's) understanding; विवक्तव्यं (vivaktavyam) - should be expressed; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; धर्मलिप्सया (dharmalipsayā) - with the desire for righteousness;]
(Necessarily but here by the wise, among the good, with the desire to speak, according to (one's) understanding, it should be expressed entirely with the desire for righteousness.)
But here, one must certainly, with wisdom, express oneself among virtuous people, always and fully according to one's understanding, motivated by the desire for righteousness. (04-27-11)
तत्र नाहं तथा मन्ये यथायमितरो जनः। पुरे जनपदे वापि यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-२७-१२॥
tatra nāhaṁ tathā manye yathāyamitaro janaḥ। pure janapade vāpi yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥04-27-12॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; मन्न्ये (manye) - I think; I regard; यथा (yathā) - as; अयम् (ayam) - this; इतरः (itaraḥ) - other; जनः (janaḥ) - person; man; पुरे (pure) - in the city; जनपदे (janapade) - in the country; in the region; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(There not I thus think as this other person; in the city or even in the country where king Yudhishthira (is).)
There, I do not think in the same way as this other person does, either in the city or the country where king Yudhishthira lives. (04-27-12)
नासूयको न चापीर्षुर्नातिवादी न मत्सरी। भविष्यति जनस्तत्र स्वं स्वं धर्ममनुव्रतः ॥०४-२७-१३॥
nāsūyako na cāpīrṣur nātivādī na matsarī। bhaviṣyati janas tatra svaṃ svaṃ dharmam anuvrataḥ॥04-27-13॥
[न (na) - not; असूयकः (asūyakaḥ) - envious; (one) who is not jealous; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ईर्षुः (īrṣuḥ) - hateful; covetous; (one) who is jealous; न (na) - not; अतिवादी (ativādī) - boastful; exceedingly talkative (one); न (na) - not; मत्सरी (matsarī) - malicious; (one) who is spiteful; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; will exist; जनः (janaḥ) - person; people; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्वं स्वं (svaṃ svaṃ) - one's own respective; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; righteousness; अनुव्रतः (anuvrataḥ) - steadfast; devoted to; following;]
(Not envious, nor also jealous, not boastful, not spiteful will be the person there, each steadfast in one's own duty.)
There, no one will be envious, jealous, boastful, or malicious; each person will steadfastly follow their own duty. (04-27-13)
ब्रह्मघोषाश्च भूयांसः पूर्णाहुत्यस्तथैव च। क्रतवश्च भविष्यन्ति भूयांसो भूरिदक्षिणाः ॥०४-२७-१४॥
brahmaghoṣāś ca bhūyāṃsaḥ pūrṇāhutyaḥ tathaiva ca। kratavaś ca bhaviṣyanti bhūyāṃsaḥ bhūridakṣiṇāḥ॥04-27-14॥
[ब्रह्मघोषाः (brahmaghoṣāḥ) - chants of the Veda; च (ca) - and; भूयांसः (bhūyāṃsaḥ) - more abundant; पूर्णाहुत्यः (pūrṇāhutyaḥ) - oblations accompanied with completion; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; क्रतवः (kratavaḥ) - sacrifices; च (ca) - and; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; भूयांसः (bhūyāṃsaḥ) - more abundant; भूरिदक्षिणाः (bhūridakṣiṇāḥ) - with great gifts to priests;]
(Chants of the Veda and more abundant, oblations accompanied with completion likewise and, sacrifices and will be more abundant with great gifts to priests.)
The chants of the Veda will become more abundant, as will completed offerings; there will also be many more sacrifices, lavishly endowed with generous gifts to priests. (04-27-14)
सदा च तत्र पर्जन्यः सम्यग्वर्षी न संशयः। सम्पन्नसस्या च मही निरीतीका भविष्यति ॥०४-२७-१५॥
sadā ca tatra parjanyaḥ samyag-varṣī na saṁśayaḥ। sampannasasyā ca mahī nirītikā bhaviṣyati ॥04-27-15॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; पर्जन्यः (parjanyaḥ) - rain-cloud; (here: rain); सम्यग्वर्षी (samyag-varṣī) - well-raining; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; सम्पन्नसस्या (sampanna-sasyā) - having abundant crops; च (ca) - and; मही (mahī) - the earth; निरीतीका (nirītikā) - free from calamity; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Always and there rain-cloud well-raining not doubt; having abundant crops and the earth free from calamity will be.)
There, rain will always fall properly without any doubt; and the earth, with abundant crops, will be free from calamity. (04-27-15)
रसवन्ति च धान्यानि गुणवन्ति फलानि च। गन्धवन्ति च माल्यानि शुभशब्दा च भारती ॥०४-२७-१६॥
rasavanti ca dhānyāni guṇavanti phalāni ca| gandhavanti ca mālyāni śubhaśabdā ca bhāratī ॥04-27-16॥
[रसवन्ति (rasavanti) - having sap; juicy; च (ca) - and; धान्यानि (dhānyāni) - grains; गुणवन्ति (guṇavanti) - having qualities; virtuous; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; च (ca) - and; गन्धवन्ति (gandhavanti) - having fragrance; च (ca) - and; माल्यानि (mālyāni) - garlands; शुभशब्दा (śubhaśabdā) - auspicious words; च (ca) - and; भारती (bhāratī) - speech; utterance; ॥०४-२७-१६॥ (॥04-27-16॥) -;]
(Juicy and grains, virtuous and fruits; fragrant and garlands, auspicious words and speech.)
Grains are juicy, fruits are virtuous, garlands are fragrant, and Bhāratī (goddess of speech) has auspicious words. (04-27-16)
वायुश्च सुखसंस्पर्शो निष्प्रतीपं च दर्शनम्। भयं नाभ्याविशेत्तत्र यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-२७-१७॥
vāyuś ca sukhasaṃsparśo niṣpratīpaṃ ca darśanam| bhayaṃ nābhyāviśet tatra yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥04-27-17॥
[वायुश्च (vāyuḥ ca) - the wind and; सुखसंस्पर्शः (sukhasaṃsparśaḥ) - pleasant to touch; निष्प्रतीपम् (niṣpratīpam) - undisturbed; च (ca) - and; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - appearance; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; न (na) - not; अभ्याविशेत् (abhyāviśet) - would enter; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(The wind and pleasant to touch, undisturbed and appearance; fear would not enter there where king Yudhishthira (is).)
Wherever the king Yudhishthira is, the wind is pleasant to the touch, the sight is undisturbed, and no fear enters there. (04-27-17)
गावश्च बहुलास्तत्र न कृशा न च दुर्दुहाः। पयांसि दधिसर्पींषि रसवन्ति हितानि च ॥०४-२७-१८॥
gāvaś ca bahulās tatra na kṛśā na ca durduhāḥ। payāṃsi dadhisarpīṃṣi rasavanti hitāni ca॥04-27-18॥
[गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; बहुलाः (bahulāḥ) - abundant; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; कृशाः (kṛśāḥ) - emaciated; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दुर्दुहाः (durduhāḥ) - difficult to milk; पयांसि (payāṃsi) - milk; दधिसर्पींषि (dadhisarpīṃṣi) - curds (dadhi) and ghee (sarpis); रसवन्ति (rasavanti) - full of sap/flavor; हितानि (hitāni) - wholesome; च (ca) - and;]
(The cows and abundant there not emaciated not and difficult to milk; milk, curds and ghee full of flavor, wholesome and.)
There, the cows are abundant, neither emaciated nor difficult to milk; their milk, curds, and ghee are full of flavor and wholesome. (04-27-18)
गुणवन्ति च पानानि भोज्यानि रसवन्ति च। तत्र देशे भविष्यन्ति यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-२७-१९॥
guṇavanti ca pānāni bhojyāni rasavanti ca। tatra deśe bhaviṣyanti yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥04-27-19॥
[गुणवन्ति (guṇavanti) - possessing qualities; च (ca) - and; पानानि (pānāni) - drinks; भोज्यानि (bhojyāni) - foods; रसवन्ति (rasavanti) - full of taste; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; देशे (deśe) - in the land; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will exist; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Possessing qualities and drinks, foods full of taste and; there in the land will exist where king Yudhishthira (is).)
There will be high-quality drinks and foods rich in flavor in that land where King Yudhishthira is present. (04-27-19)
रसाः स्पर्शाश्च गन्धाश्च शब्दाश्चापि गुणान्विताः। दृश्यानि च प्रसन्नानि यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-२७-२०॥
rasāḥ sparśāś ca gandhāś ca śabdāś ca api guṇānvitāḥ. dṛśyāni ca prasannāni yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥04-27-20॥
[रसाः (rasāḥ) - tastes; स्पर्शाः (sparśāḥ) - touches; च (ca) - and; गन्धाः (gandhāḥ) - scents; च (ca) - and; शब्दाः (śabdāḥ) - sounds; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गुणान्विताः (guṇānvitāḥ) - endowed with qualities; दृश्यानि (dṛśyāni) - visible things; च (ca) - and; प्रसन्नानि (prasannāni) - pleasant; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Tastes, touches, scents, and sounds also endowed with qualities; and the visible things, pleasant, where king Yudhiṣṭhira (is).)
Where king Yudhiṣṭhira is, tastes, touches, scents, and sounds endowed with qualities, and even the visible things, are all pleasant. (04-27-20)
स्वैः स्वैर्गुणैः सुसंयुक्तास्तस्मिन्वर्षे त्रयोदशे। देशे तस्मिन्भविष्यन्ति तात पाण्डवसंयुते ॥०४-२७-२१॥
svaiḥ svair guṇaiḥ susaṁyuktās tasmin varṣe trayodaśe। deśe tasmin bhaviṣyanti tāta pāṇḍava-saṁyute ॥04-27-21॥
[स्वैः स्वैः (svaiḥ svaiḥ) - with their own; with their own; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities; सुसंयुक्ताः (susaṁyuktāḥ) - well-endowed; well-joined; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; त्रयोदशे (trayodaśe) - thirteenth; देशे (deśe) - in the country; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; तात (tāta) - O father; पाण्डवसंयुते (pāṇḍava-saṁyute) - connected with the Pāṇḍavas;]
(With their own, with their own qualities, well-endowed, in that year, the thirteenth, in that country, in that, will be, O father, connected with the Pāṇḍavas.)
O father, in that thirteenth year, in that country connected with the Pāṇḍavas, there will be those who are well-endowed with their own qualities. (04-27-21)
सम्प्रीतिमाञ्जनस्तत्र सन्तुष्टः शुचिरव्ययः। देवतातिथिपूजासु सर्वभूतानुरागवान् ॥०४-२७-२२॥
samprītimāñjanas tatra santuṣṭaḥ śuciravyayaḥ। devatātithipūjāsu sarvabhūtānurāgavān॥04-27-22॥
[सम्प्रीतिमाञ्जनः (samprītimāñjanaḥ) - one who applies endearment (as ointment); तत्र (tatra) - there; in that place; सन्तुष्टः (santuṣṭaḥ) - content; satisfied; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; अव्ययः (avyayaḥ) - imperishable; unchanging; देवता-अतिथि-पूजासु (devatā-atithi-pūjāsu) - in (the acts of) worship of gods and guests; सर्वभूतानुरागवान् (sarvabhūtānurāgavān) - endowed with affection for all beings;]
(There, one who applies endearment, content, pure, unchanging, in worship of gods and guests, endowed with affection for all beings.)
There, he is one who spreads affection, remains content, is pure and steadfast, and in the worship of gods and guests, he is full of love for all beings. (04-27-22)
इष्टदानो महोत्साहः शश्वद्धर्मपरायणः। अशुभद्विट्शुभप्रेप्सुर्नित्ययज्ञः शुभव्रतः ॥ भविष्यति जनस्तत्र यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-२७-२३॥
iṣṭadāno mahotsāhaḥ śaśvaddharmaparāyaṇaḥ। aśubhadviṭśubhaprepsurnityayajñaḥ śubhavrataḥ॥ bhaviṣyati janastatra yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥04-27-23॥
[इष्टदानः (iṣṭadānaḥ) - one who gives the desired gift; महत्साहः (mahotsāhaḥ) - greatly enthusiastic; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - always; धर्मपरायणः (dharmaparāyaṇaḥ) - committed to dharma; अशुभद्विट् (aśubhadviṭ) - hater of evil; शुभप्रेप्सुः (śubhaprepsuḥ) - desirer of good; नित्ययज्ञः (nityayajñaḥ) - always performing sacrifice; शुभव्रतः (śubhavrataḥ) - having auspicious vows; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - there will be; जनः (janaḥ) - people; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(One who gives the desired gift, greatly enthusiastic, always committed to dharma, hater of evil, desirer of good, always performing sacrifice, having auspicious vows—there will be such people where the king is Yudhishthira.)
Where king Yudhishthira rules, there will be people who give the desired gifts, are highly enthusiastic, always devoted to righteousness, hate evil, seek good, perpetually engage in sacrifice, and practice auspicious vows. (04-27-23)
त्यक्तवाक्यानृतस्तात शुभकल्याणमङ्गलः। शुभार्थेप्सुः शुभमतिर्यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥ भविष्यति जनस्तत्र नित्यं चेष्टप्रियव्रतः ॥०४-२७-२४॥
tyaktavākyānṛtastāta śubhakalyāṇamaṅgalaḥ | śubhārthepsuḥ śubhamatiryatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥ bhaviṣyati janastatra nityaṃ ceṣṭapriyavrataḥ ॥04-27-24॥
[त्यक्तवाक्यानृतः (tyaktavākyānṛtaḥ) - rejecting false speech; तात (tāta) - O dear; शुभकल्याणमङ्गलः (śubhakalyāṇamaṅgalaḥ) - endowed with auspiciousness, welfare, and blessing; शुभार्थेप्सुः (śubhārthepsuḥ) - desiring what is auspicious; शुभमतिः (śubhamatiḥ) - having a pure mind; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; जनः (janaḥ) - people; तत्र (tatra) - there; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; चेष्टप्रियव्रतः (ceṣṭapriyavrataḥ) - devoted to good deeds and loving virtue;]
(Rejecting false speech, O dear, endowed with auspiciousness, welfare, and blessing; desiring what is auspicious, having a pure mind, where King Yudhiṣṭhira will be, the people there will always be devoted to good deeds and loving virtue.)
O dear, wherever King Yudhiṣṭhira—who rejects false speech, is auspicious, desires what is good, and is pure-minded—will reign, the people there will always be engaged in good deeds and devoted to what is right. (04-27-24)
धर्मात्मा स तदादृश्यः सोऽपि तात द्विजातिभिः। किं पुनः प्राकृतैः पार्थः शक्यो विज्ञातुमन्ततः ॥०४-२७-२५॥
dharmātmā sa tadādṛśyaḥ so'pi tāta dvijātibhiḥ। kiṃ punaḥ prākṛtaiḥ pārthaḥ śakyo vijñātumantataḥ॥04-27-25॥
[धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - virtuous-souled; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; अदृश्यः (adṛśyaḥ) - invisible; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; तात (tāta) - O dear one; द्विजातिभिः (dvijātibhiḥ) - by twice-born (brāhmaṇas etc.); किं (kiṃ) - how; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्राकृतैः (prākṛtaiḥ) - by ordinary men; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - O Pārtha; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - capable (to be); विज्ञातुम् (vijñātum) - to be known; अन्ततः (antataḥ) - in the end;]
(Virtuous-souled he then invisible, he also O dear one by twice-born; how again by ordinary men, O Pārtha, is capable to be known in the end?)
That virtuous-souled one then became invisible, O dear one, even to the twice-born; how then, O Pārtha, can he possibly be known thoroughly by ordinary men? (04-27-25)
यस्मिन्सत्यं धृतिर्दानं परा शान्तिर्ध्रुवा क्षमा। ह्रीः श्रीः कीर्तिः परं तेज आनृशंस्यमथार्जवम् ॥०४-२७-२६॥
yasmin satyaṃ dhṛtir dānaṃ parā śāntir dhruvā kṣamā | hrīḥ śrīḥ kīrtiḥ paraṃ teja ānṛśaṃsyam athārjavam ||04-27-26||
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; धृति: (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; दानं (dānaṃ) - generosity; परा (parā) - supreme; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; ध्रुवा (dhruvā) - steady; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forbearance; ह्रीः (hrīḥ) - modesty; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - fortune; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; तेज (teja) - radiance; आनृशंस्यम् (ānṛśaṃsyam) - compassion; अथ (atha) - and; आर्जवम् (ārjavam) - straightforwardness;]
(In whom truth, steadfastness, generosity, supreme peace, steady forbearance, modesty, fortune, fame, supreme radiance, compassion, and straightforwardness (are found).)
In whom truth, steadfastness, generosity, supreme peace, unwavering forbearance, modesty, prosperity, fame, supreme brilliance, compassion, and honesty abide. (04-27-26)
तस्मात्तत्र निवासं तु छन्नं सत्रेण धीमतः। गतिं वा परमां तस्य नोत्सहे वक्तुमन्यथा ॥०४-२७-२७॥
tasmāttatra nivāsaṃ tu channaṃ satreṇa dhīmataḥ। gatiṃ vā paramāṃ tasya notsahe vaktumanyathā ॥04-27-27॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तत्र (tatra) - there; निवासं (nivāsaṃ) - residence; तु (tu) - but; छन्नं (channaṃ) - hidden; सत्रेण (satreṇa) - by a sacrificial session; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise one; गतिं (gatiṃ) - the path; वा (vā) - or; परमां (paramāṃ) - supreme; तस्य (tasya) - of him; न (na) - not; उत्सहे (utsaḥe) - am able; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Therefore, there the residence but hidden by the sacrificial session of the wise one; or the supreme path of him I am not able to speak otherwise.)
Therefore, I am not able to disclose otherwise the hidden residence there, or the supreme path of that wise one, by means of the sacrificial session. (04-27-27)
एवमेतत्तु सञ्चिन्त्य यत्कृतं मन्यसे हितम्। तत्क्षिप्रं कुरु कौरव्य यद्येवं श्रद्दधासि मे ॥०४-२७-२८॥
evam etat tu sañcintya yat kṛtaṃ manyase hitam। tat kṣipraṃ kuru kauravya yad evam śraddadhāsi me॥04-27-28॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; तु (tu) - but; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having reflected; यत् (yat) - which; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; तत् (tat) - that; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; कुरु (kuru) - do; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O Kaurava; यत् (yat) - because; एवम् (evam) - thus; श्रद्दधासि (śraddadhāsi) - you have faith; मे (me) - in me;]
(Thus, indeed, but having reflected, which has been done, you think beneficial, that quickly do, O Kaurava, because thus you have faith in me.)
But after thus reflecting, whatever you think is beneficial, do that at once, O Kaurava, since you have such faith in me. (04-27-28)
