ततः शारद्वतो वाक्यमित्युवाच कृपस्तदा। युक्तं प्राप्तं च वृद्धेन पाण्डवान्प्रति भाषितम् ॥०४-२८-१॥
tataḥ śāradvato vākyam ity uvāca kṛpas tadā। yuktaṃ prāptaṃ ca vṛddhena pāṇḍavān prati bhāṣitam ॥04-28-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शारद्वतः (śāradvataḥ) - son of Śaradvat; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; तदा (tadā) - then; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - appropriate; च (ca) - and; वृद्धेन (vṛddhena) - by the elder; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - towards the Pāṇḍavas; प्रति (prati) - towards; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken;]
(Then the son of Śaradvat, Kṛpa, said these words: "Proper and appropriate is the speech spoken by the elder towards the Pāṇḍavas." (04-28-1))
Then Kṛpa, son of Śaradvat, said: "The words spoken by the elder to the Pāṇḍavas are proper and fitting." (04-28-1)
धर्मार्थसहितं श्लक्ष्णं तत्त्वतश्च सहेतुमत्। तत्रानुरूपं भीष्मेण ममाप्यत्र गिरं शृणु ॥०४-२८-२॥
dharmārthasahitaṃ ślakṣṇaṃ tattvataś ca sahetumat। tatrānurūpaṃ bhīṣmeṇa mamāpy atra giraṃ śṛṇu ॥04-28-2॥
[धर्मार्थसहितं (dharmārthasahitaṃ) - possessed of righteousness and purpose; श्लक्ष्णं (ślakṣṇam) - gentle; तत्त्वतश्च (tattvataś ca) - and in reality; सहेतुमत् (sahetumat) - with reasoning; तत्रानुरूपं (tatrānurūpam) - there should be appropriate; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhīṣma; ममापि (mamāpi) - also my; अत्र (atra) - here; गिरं (giraṃ) - speech; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; ॥०४-२८-२॥ (॥04-28-2॥) -;]
(Possessed of righteousness and purpose, gentle, and in reality with reasoning, there appropriate by Bhīṣma also my here speech hear.)
Hear here also my speech, which is combined with righteousness and purpose, gentle, real, and furnished with reasoning, as is appropriate for Bhīṣma. (04-28-2)
तेषां चैव गतिस्तीर्थैर्वासश्चैषां प्रचिन्त्यताम्। नीतिर्विधीयतां चापि साम्प्रतं या हिता भवेत् ॥०४-२८-३॥
teṣāṃ caiva gatistīrthairvāsaś caiṣāṃ pracintyatām। nītir vidhīyatāṃ cāpi sāmprataṃ yā hitā bhavet॥04-28-3॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गतिः (gatiḥ) - movement; तीर्थैः (tīrthaiḥ) - by crossings; वासः (vāsaḥ) - residence; च (ca) - and; एषां (eṣāṃ) - of these; प्रचिन्त्यताम् (pracintyatām) - let it be considered; नीतिः (nītiḥ) - course of action; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let it be prescribed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; या (yā) - which; हिता (hitā) - beneficial; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be;]
(Of them and indeed their movement by crossings and the residence of these, let it be considered; the course of action let it be prescribed also which at present may be beneficial.)
Let their route by the crossings and their residence be considered; also, let the course of action which would now be beneficial be determined. (04-28-3)
नावज्ञेयो रिपुस्तात प्राकृतोऽपि बुभूषता। किं पुनः पाण्डवास्तात सर्वास्त्रकुशला रणे ॥०४-२८-४॥
nāvajñeyo ripustāta prākṛto'pi bubhūṣatā। kiṃ punaḥ pāṇḍavāstāta sarvāstrakuśalā raṇe ॥04-28-4॥
[न (na) - not; अवज्ञेयः (avajñeyaḥ) - to be disregarded; रिपुः (ripuḥ) - enemy; तात् (tāt) - O dear one; प्राकृतः (prākṛtaḥ) - ordinary; natural; अपि (api) - even; बुभूषता (bubhūṣatā) - by one desiring to live; किं (kiṃ) - what; पुनः (punaḥ) - then again; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तात् (tāt) - O dear one; सर्वास्त्रकुशलाः (sarvāstrakuśalāḥ) - skilled in all weapons; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Not to be disregarded is the enemy, O dear one, even by one desiring to live, who is ordinary. What then (can be said of) the Pāṇḍavas, O dear one, skilled in all weapons, in battle?)
One should not disregard an enemy, O dear one, even if he is an ordinary person, when one wishes to survive; how much more so the Pāṇḍavas, O dear one, who are skilled in all weapons in battle? (04-28-4)
तस्मात्सत्रं प्रविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। गूढभावेषु छन्नेषु काले चोदयमागते ॥०४-२८-५॥
tasmātsatraṃ praviṣṭeṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। gūḍhabhāveṣu channeṣu kāle codayamāgate ॥04-28-5॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सत्रम् (satram) - sacrifice; प्रविष्टेषु (praviṣṭeṣu) - after entering (into); पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - in the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - in the great-souled ones; गूढभावेषु (gūḍhabhāveṣu) - with hidden intentions; छन्नेषु (channeṣu) - concealed; काले (kāle) - on the occasion; च (ca) - and; उदयम् (udayam) - beginning; आगते (āgate) - having arrived;]
(Therefore, when the Pāṇḍavas—the great-souled ones—having entered the sacrifice, with hidden intentions, being concealed, and the occasion of the beginning having arrived;)
Therefore, when the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, having entered the sacrifice with hidden intentions and while being concealed, and when the right moment for commencement had arrived (04-28-5)
स्वराष्ट्रपरराष्ट्रेषु ज्ञातव्यं बलमात्मनः। उदये पाण्डवानां च प्राप्ते काले न संशयः ॥०४-२८-६॥
svarāṣṭra-pararāṣṭreṣu jñātavyaṃ balam-ātmanaḥ। udaye pāṇḍavānāṃ ca prāpte kāle na saṃśayaḥ॥04-28-6॥
[स्वराष्ट्रपरराष्ट्रेषु (svarāṣṭra-pararāṣṭreṣu) - in one's own country and in foreign countries; ज्ञातव्यं (jñātavyam) - should be known; बलम् (balam) - strength; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; उदये (udaye) - at the rise; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having arrived; काले (kāle) - at the time; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(In one's own country and in foreign countries, strength of oneself should be known; at the rise of the Pāṇḍavas and when the time has arrived, there is no doubt.)
One should know one's own strength in both one's own and other countries; at the rise of the Pāṇḍavas and when the time comes, there is no doubt about this. (04-28-6)
निवृत्तसमयाः पार्था महात्मानो महाबलाः। महोत्साहा भविष्यन्ति पाण्डवा ह्यतितेजसः ॥०४-२८-७॥
nivṛttasamayaḥ pārthā mahātmāno mahābalāḥ। mahotsāhā bhaviṣyanti pāṇḍavā hyatitejasaḥ॥04-28-7॥
[निवृत्तसमयाः (nivṛttasamayaḥ) - those whose appointed time has ceased; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and his brothers); महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - of great strength; महोत्साहाः (mahotsāhāḥ) - of great enthusiasm; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - they will become; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the sons of Pandu; हि (hi) - indeed; अतितेजसः (atitejasaḥ) - of surpassing brilliance;]
(Those whose allotted time has ended, the sons of Pṛthā, great-souled, of immense strength, of great enthusiasm, will become (remain) the Pāṇḍavas indeed, of surpassing brilliance.)
The Pāṇḍavas, the sons of Pṛthā, whose destined time has come, who are great-souled, mighty, and full of enthusiasm, will indeed be of extraordinary brilliance. (04-28-7)
तस्माद्बलं च कोशं च नीतिश्चापि विधीयताम्। यथा कालोदये प्राप्ते सम्यक्तैः संदधामहे ॥०४-२८-८॥
tasmād balaṃ ca kośaṃ ca nītiś cāpi vidhīyatām। yathā kālodaye prāpte samyaktaiḥ saṃdadhāmahe॥04-28-8॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; च (ca) - and; कोशं (kośaṃ) - treasure; च (ca) - and; नीतिः (nītiḥ) - policy; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let (them) be arranged; यथा (yathā) - so that; काल-उदये (kāla-udaye) - at the rise of time; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when attained; सम्यक्-तैः (samyak-taiḥ) - by the proper ones (means/tools/persons); संदधामहे (saṃdadhāmahe) - we may accomplish;]
(Therefore, strength and treasure and policy also let be arranged, so that when the rise of time is attained, by the proper ones, we may accomplish.)
Therefore, let strength, treasure, and policy also be organized, so that when the proper time comes, with the right means, we may achieve our goal. (04-28-8)
तात मन्यामि तत्सर्वं बुध्यस्व बलमात्मनः। नियतं सर्वमित्रेषु बलवत्स्वबलेषु च ॥०४-२८-९॥
tāta manyāmi tatsarvaṁ buddhyasva balamātmanaḥ। niyataṁ sarvamitreṣu balavatsvabaleṣu ca ॥04-28-9॥
[तात (tāta) - O dear; father; son; मन्यामि (manyāmi) - I think; I consider; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; everything; बुध्यस्व (buddhyasva) - understand; know; बलम् (balam) - strength; power; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself; of your own self; नियतं (niyatam) - certainly; assuredly; सर्वमित्रेषु (sarvamitreṣu) - among all friends; बलवत्सु (balavatsu) - among the strong; अबलेषु (abaleṣu) - among the weak; च (ca) - and; also;]
(O dear, I think all that; know the strength of yourself. Certainly, among all friends, among the strong, and among the weak, too.)
O dear one, I think all that; therefore, understand your own strength. Certainly, among all friends, among the strong and among the weak, too. (04-28-9)
उच्चावचं बलं ज्ञात्वा मध्यस्थं चापि भारत। प्रहृष्टमप्रहृष्टं च संदधाम तथा परैः ॥०४-२८-१०॥
uccāvacam balaṃ jñātvā madhyasthaṃ cāpi bhārata। prahṛṣṭamaprahṛṣṭaṃ ca sandadhāma tathā paraiḥ ॥04-28-10॥
[उच्चावचं (uccāvacam) - higher and lower; (of various degrees); बलं (balaṃ) - strength; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; मध्यस्थं (madhyastham) - neutral; standing in the middle; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्रहृष्टम् (prahṛṣṭam) - elated; अप्रहृष्टं (aprahṛṣṭam) - not elated; च (ca) - and; संदधाम (sandadhāma) - let us arrange; let us organize; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; परैः (paraiḥ) - with others; with the enemies;]
(Having known the higher and lower strength, the neutral also, O Bhārata, elated, not elated and, let us arrange thus with others.)
O Bhārata, having understood the strengths of both higher and lower forces, as well as the neutrals, let us thus organize both the elated and the not elated together with others. (04-28-10)
साम्ना भेदेन दानेन दण्डेन बलिकर्मणा। न्यायेनानम्य च परान्बलाच्चानम्य दुर्बलान् ॥०४-२८-११॥
sāmnā bhedena dānena daṇḍena balikarmaṇā। nyāyenānamya ca parānbalāccānamya durbalān ॥04-28-11॥
[साम्ना (sāmnā) - by conciliation; भेदेन (bhedena) - by division; दानेन (dānena) - by gift; दण्डेन (daṇḍena) - by punishment; बलिकर्मणा (balikarmaṇā) - by the act of offering tribute; न्यायेन (nyāyena) - by justice; अनम्य (anamya) - without bowing; च (ca) - and; परान् (parān) - others; बलात् (balāt) - by force; च (ca) - and; अनम्य (anamya) - without bowing; दुर्बलान् (durbalān) - the weak;]
(By conciliation, by division, by gift, by punishment, by the act of offering tribute; by justice without bowing and others, by force and without bowing the weak.)
One should employ conciliation, division, gifts, punishment, or the act of offering tribute; approach others justly without submission, and the weak by force, also without submission. (04-28-11)
सान्त्वयित्वा च मित्राणि बलं चाभाष्यतां सुखम्। सकोशबलसंवृद्धः सम्यक्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ॥०४-२८-१२॥
sāntvayitvā ca mitrāṇi balaṁ cābhāṣyatāṁ sukham। sakośabalasaṁvṛddhaḥ samyaksiddhimavāpsyasi ॥04-28-12॥
[सान्त्वयित्वा (sāntvayitvā) - having conciliated; च (ca) - and; मित्राणि (mitrāṇi) - friends; बलं (balaṁ) - the army; च (ca) - and; अभाष्यतां (abhāṣyatām) - let be addressed; सुखम् (sukham) - comfort; सकोशबलसंवृद्धः (sakośabala-saṁvṛddhaḥ) - having treasury and army increased; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - success; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(Having conciliated and (your) friends and the army, let comfort be addressed; having treasury and army increased, properly, success you will attain.)
By conciliating your friends and the army and offering them comfort, with your treasury and army increased, you will properly attain success. (04-28-12)
योत्स्यसे चापि बलिभिररिभिः प्रत्युपस्थितैः। अन्यैस्त्वं पाण्डवैर्वापि हीनस्वबलवाहनैः ॥०४-२८-१३॥
yotsyase cāpi balibhiraribhiḥ pratyupasthitaiḥ। anyaistvaṁ pāṇḍavairvāpi hīnasvabalavāhanaiḥ॥04-28-13॥
[योत्स्यसे (yotsyase) - you will fight; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; बलिभिः (balibhiḥ) - by the strong; अरिभिः (aribhiḥ) - by enemies; प्रत्युपस्थितैः (pratyupasthitaiḥ) - who are present; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; हीन (hīna) - deprived; स्वबलवाहनैः (svabalavāhanaiḥ) - your own strengths and vehicles;]
(You will fight also with strong enemies who are present; by others, or by the Pāṇḍavas, even deprived of your own strengths and vehicles.)
You may have to fight against strong enemies who are present, or with others, or even with the Pāṇḍavas themselves, perhaps lacking your own army and chariots. (04-28-13)
एवं सर्वं विनिश्चित्य व्यवसायं स्वधर्मतः। यथाकालं मनुष्येन्द्र चिरं सुखमवाप्स्यसि ॥०४-२८-१४॥
evaṃ sarvaṃ viniścitya vyavāsāyaṃ svadharmataḥ। yathākālaṃ manuṣyendra ciraṃ sukhama vāpsyasi ॥04-28-14॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; विनिश्चित्य (viniścitya) - having ascertained; व्यवसायं (vyavāsāyaṃ) - undertaking; स्वधर्मतः (svadharmataḥ) - according to one's own dharma; यथाकालं (yathākālaṃ) - at the proper time; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O best of men; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain;]
(Thus, having ascertained all, undertaking according to one's own dharma, at the proper time, O best of men, for a long time, happiness you will obtain.)
O best of men, thus, having thoroughly determined all things and acting according to your own dharma, at the proper time you shall attain happiness for a long time. (04-28-14)
