वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततः शारद्वतो वाक्यमित्युवाच कृपस्तदा। युक्तं प्राप्तं च वृद्धेन पाण्डवान्प्रति भाषितम् ॥०४-२८-१॥
Then Kṛpa, son of Śaradvat, said: "The words spoken by the elder to the Pāṇḍavas are proper and fitting." (04-28-1)
धर्मार्थसहितं श्लक्ष्णं तत्त्वतश्च सहेतुमत्। तत्रानुरूपं भीष्मेण ममाप्यत्र गिरं शृणु ॥०४-२८-२॥
Hear here also my speech, which is combined with righteousness and purpose, gentle, real, and furnished with reasoning, as is appropriate for Bhīṣma. (04-28-2)
तेषां चैव गतिस्तीर्थैर्वासश्चैषां प्रचिन्त्यताम्। नीतिर्विधीयतां चापि साम्प्रतं या हिता भवेत् ॥०४-२८-३॥
Let their route by the crossings and their residence be considered; also, let the course of action which would now be beneficial be determined. (04-28-3)
नावज्ञेयो रिपुस्तात प्राकृतोऽपि बुभूषता। किं पुनः पाण्डवास्तात सर्वास्त्रकुशला रणे ॥०४-२८-४॥
One should not disregard an enemy, O dear one, even if he is an ordinary person, when one wishes to survive; how much more so the Pāṇḍavas, O dear one, who are skilled in all weapons in battle? (04-28-4)
तस्मात्सत्रं प्रविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। गूढभावेषु छन्नेषु काले चोदयमागते ॥०४-२८-५॥
Therefore, when the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, having entered the sacrifice with hidden intentions and while being concealed, and when the right moment for commencement had arrived (04-28-5)
स्वराष्ट्रपरराष्ट्रेषु ज्ञातव्यं बलमात्मनः। उदये पाण्डवानां च प्राप्ते काले न संशयः ॥०४-२८-६॥
One should know one's own strength in both one's own and other countries; at the rise of the Pāṇḍavas and when the time comes, there is no doubt about this. (04-28-6)
निवृत्तसमयाः पार्था महात्मानो महाबलाः। महोत्साहा भविष्यन्ति पाण्डवा ह्यतितेजसः ॥०४-२८-७॥
The Pāṇḍavas, the sons of Pṛthā, whose destined time has come, who are great-souled, mighty, and full of enthusiasm, will indeed be of extraordinary brilliance. (04-28-7)
तस्माद्बलं च कोशं च नीतिश्चापि विधीयताम्। यथा कालोदये प्राप्ते सम्यक्तैः संदधामहे ॥०४-२८-८॥
Therefore, let strength, treasure, and policy also be organized, so that when the proper time comes, with the right means, we may achieve our goal. (04-28-8)
तात मन्यामि तत्सर्वं बुध्यस्व बलमात्मनः। नियतं सर्वमित्रेषु बलवत्स्वबलेषु च ॥०४-२८-९॥
O dear one, I think all that; therefore, understand your own strength. Certainly, among all friends, among the strong and among the weak, too. (04-28-9)
उच्चावचं बलं ज्ञात्वा मध्यस्थं चापि भारत। प्रहृष्टमप्रहृष्टं च संदधाम तथा परैः ॥०४-२८-१०॥
O Bhārata, having understood the strengths of both higher and lower forces, as well as the neutrals, let us thus organize both the elated and the not elated together with others. (04-28-10)
साम्ना भेदेन दानेन दण्डेन बलिकर्मणा। न्यायेनानम्य च परान्बलाच्चानम्य दुर्बलान् ॥०४-२८-११॥
One should employ conciliation, division, gifts, punishment, or the act of offering tribute; approach others justly without submission, and the weak by force, also without submission. (04-28-11)
सान्त्वयित्वा च मित्राणि बलं चाभाष्यतां सुखम्। सकोशबलसंवृद्धः सम्यक्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ॥०४-२८-१२॥
By conciliating your friends and the army and offering them comfort, with your treasury and army increased, you will properly attain success. (04-28-12)
योत्स्यसे चापि बलिभिररिभिः प्रत्युपस्थितैः। अन्यैस्त्वं पाण्डवैर्वापि हीनस्वबलवाहनैः ॥०४-२८-१३॥
You may have to fight against strong enemies who are present, or with others, or even with the Pāṇḍavas themselves, perhaps lacking your own army and chariots. (04-28-13)
एवं सर्वं विनिश्चित्य व्यवसायं स्वधर्मतः। यथाकालं मनुष्येन्द्र चिरं सुखमवाप्स्यसि ॥०४-२८-१४॥
O best of men, thus, having thoroughly determined all things and acting according to your own dharma, at the proper time you shall attain happiness for a long time. (04-28-14)
