व्यतीतः समयः सम्यग्वसतां वै पुरोत्तमे। कुर्वतां तस्य कर्माणि विराटस्य महीपतेः ॥०४-३०-२॥
vyatītaḥ samayaḥ samyag-vasatāṃ vai purottame। kurvatāṃ tasya karmāṇi virāṭasya mahīpateḥ ॥04-30-2॥

(Elapsed time, indeed, for those dwelling properly in the foremost city, doing the actions of him, of Virata, the king.)
The time passed as they resided well in the foremost city, carrying out the duties of King Virata. (04-30-2)

ततो जवेन महता गोपाः पुरमथाव्रजत्। अपश्यन्मत्स्यराजं च रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य कुण्डली ॥०४-३०-४॥
tato javena mahatā gopāḥ puram athāvrajat। apaśyan matsyarājaṃ ca rathāt praskandya kuṇḍalī ॥04-30-4॥

शूरैः परिवृतं योधैः कुण्डलाङ्गदधारिभिः। सद्भिश्च मन्त्रिभिः सार्धं पाण्डवैश्च नरर्षभैः ॥०४-३०-५॥

तं सभायां महाराजमासीनं राष्ट्रवर्धनम्। सोऽब्रवीदुपसङ्गम्य विराटं प्रणतस्तदा ॥०४-३०-६॥

अस्मान्युधि विनिर्जित्य परिभूय सबान्धवान्। गवां शतसहस्राणि त्रिगर्ताः कालयन्ति ते ॥ तान्परीप्स मनुष्येन्द्र मा नेशुः पशवस्तव ॥०४-३०-७॥

Having completely conquered us along with our kinsmen in battle, the Trigartas are driving away hundreds of thousands of your cows. O king among men, do not let your animals be taken; determine to recover them. (04-30-7)
तच्छ्रुत्वा नृपतिः सेनां मत्स्यानां समयोजयत्। रथनागाश्वकलिलां पत्तिध्वजसमाकुलाम् ॥०४-३०-८॥
tac chrutvā nṛpatiḥ senāṃ matsyānāṃ samayojayat। rathanāgāśvakalilāṃ pattidhvajasamākulām ॥04-30-8॥

राजानो राजपुत्राश्च तनुत्राण्यत्र भेजिरे। भानुमन्ति विचित्राणि सूपसेव्यानि भागशः ॥०४-३०-९॥
rājāno rājaputrāś ca tanutrāṇy atra bhejire. bhānumanti vicitrāṇi sūpasevyāni bhāgaśaḥ ॥04-30-9॥

(But armor with a core of thunderbolt-iron, molten gold—Virāṭa's dear brother Śatānīka brought.)

सर्वपारसवं वर्म कल्याणपटलं दृढम्। शतानीकादवरजो मदिराश्वोऽभ्यहारयत् ॥०४-३०-११॥
sarvapārasavaṃ varma kalyāṇapaṭalaṃ dṛḍham। śatānīkād avara jo madirāśvo'bhyāharayat ॥04-30-11॥

उत्सेधे यस्य पद्मानि शतं सौगन्धिकानि च। सुवर्णपृष्ठं सूर्याभं सूर्यदत्तोऽभ्यहारयत् ॥०४-३०-१३॥
utsedhe yasya padmāni śataṃ saugandhikāni ca। suvarṇapṛṣṭhaṃ sūryābhaṃ sūryadatto'bhyāharayat॥04-30-13॥

शतशश्च तनुत्राणि यथास्वानि महारथाः। योत्स्यमानाभ्यनह्यन्त देवरूपाः प्रहारिणः ॥०४-३०-१५॥
śataśaś ca tanutrāṇi yathāsvāni mahārathāḥ। yotsyamānābhyanahyanta devarūpāḥ prahāriṇaḥ॥04-30-15॥

(And hundreds of body-armors as their own, the great chariot-warriors, about to fight, put on—having the form of gods, those who attack.)
The great chariot-warriors, resplendent like gods and ready for battle, each donned their own hundreds of body-armors as they prepared to fight. (04-30-15)
सूपस्करेषु शुभ्रेषु महत्सु च महारथाः। पृथक्काञ्चनसंनाहान्रथेष्वश्वानयोजयन् ॥०४-३०-१६॥
sūpaskareṣu śubhreṣu mahatsu ca mahārathāḥ। pṛthak kāñcana-saṃnāhān ratheṣu aśvān ayojayan ॥04-30-16॥
[सूपस्करेषु (sūpaskareṣu) - in chariots equipped with all accessories; शुभ्रेषु (śubhreṣu) - in radiant (ones); महत्सु (mahatsu) - in great (ones); च (ca) - and; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; पृथक्काञ्चनसंनाहान् (pṛthak kāñcana-saṃnāhān) - separately (with) golden harnesses; रथेषु (ratheṣu) - to (their) chariots; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; अयोजयन् (ayojayan) - they yoked;]
(In chariots equipped with all accessories, in radiant, in great (ones), and great chariot-warriors separately (with) golden harnesses to (their) chariots horses they yoked.)
The great chariot-warriors yoked the horses, each adorned with golden harnesses, to their large, shining, fully-equipped chariots. (04-30-16)
सूर्यचन्द्रप्रतीकाशो रथे दिव्ये हिरण्मयः। महानुभावो मत्स्यस्य ध्वज उच्छिश्रिये तदा ॥०४-३०-१७॥
sūryacandrapratīkāśo rathe divye hiraṇmayaḥ। mahānubhāvo matsyasya dhvaja ucchiśriye tadā ॥04-30-17॥
[सूर्यचन्द्रप्रतीकाशः (sūryacandrapratīkāśaḥ) - having the luster like the sun and moon; रथे (rathe) - on the chariot; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; हिरण्मयः (hiraṇmayaḥ) - golden; महानुभावः (mahānubhāvaḥ) - possessing great majesty; मत्स्यस्य (matsyasya) - of the fish (Matsya); ध्वजः (dhvajaḥ) - banner; उच्छिश्रिये (ucchiśriye) - stood high; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having the luster like the sun and moon, on the divine golden chariot, the banner of Matsya, possessing great majesty, stood high then.)
Then, upon the divine golden chariot, the grandly majestic banner bearing Matsya, shining like the sun and moon, stood tall. (04-30-17)
अथान्यान्विविधाकारान्ध्वजान्हेमविभूषितान्। यथास्वं क्षत्रियाः शूरा रथेषु समयोजयन् ॥०४-३०-१८॥
athānyān vividhākārān dhvajān hema-vibhūṣitān। yathā-svaṁ kṣatriyāḥ śūrā ratheṣu samayojayan ॥04-30-18॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; विविधाकारान् (vividhākārān) - of various forms; ध्वजान् (dhvajān) - standards; banners; हेमविभूषितान् (hema-vibhūṣitān) - adorned with gold; यथास्वम् (yathāsvam) - according to each one; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - warriors; kṣatriyas; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; brave ones; रथेषु (ratheṣu) - on chariots; समयोजयन् (samayojayan) - they mounted; attached;]

अथ मत्स्योऽब्रवीद्राजा शतानीकं जघन्यजम्। कङ्कबल्लवगोपाला दामग्रन्थिश्च वीर्यवान् ॥ युध्येयुरिति मे बुद्धिर्वर्तते नात्र संशयः ॥०४-३०-१९॥
atha matsyo'bravīdrājā śatānīkaṃ jaghanyajam। kaṅka-ballava-gopālā dāmagrantiś ca vīryavān॥ yudhyeyur iti me buddhir vartate nātra saṃśayaḥ॥04-30-19॥

(Then Matsya said, the king Śatānīka, the youngest-born, Kaṅka, Ballava, Gopāla, Dāmagranthi and the mighty one — should fight, thus my thought arises, not here (is) doubt.)
Then Matsya said, "King Śatānīka, the youngest one, Kaṅka, Ballava, Gopāla, Dāmagranthi and the mighty one should fight; this is my thought, and there is no doubt about it." (04-30-19)
एतेषामपि दीयन्तां रथा ध्वजपताकिनः। कवचानि विचित्राणि दृढानि च मृदूनि च ॥ प्रतिमुञ्चन्तु गात्रेषु दीयन्तामायुधानि च ॥०४-३०-२०॥

[एतेषाम् अपि (eteṣām api) - to these also; दीयन्तां (dīyantāṃ) - let (them) be given; रथाः (rathāḥ) - chariots; ध्वजपताकिनः (dhvajapatākinaḥ) - with banners and pennants; कवचानि (kavacāni) - armors; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - variegated; दृढानि (dṛḍhāni) - strong; च (ca) - and; मृदूनि (mṛdūni) - soft; च (ca) - and; प्रतिमुञ्चन्तु (pratimuncaṃtu) - let (them) put on; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - on bodies; दीयन्ताम् (dīyantām) - let (them) be given; आयुधानि (āyudhāni) - weapons; च (ca) - and;]
(To these also let chariots with banners and pennants be given; armors variegated, strong and soft, and let them put on (armors) on (their) bodies. Let weapons also be given.)
Let chariots adorned with banners be given to these men as well. Let them be supplied with armors—varied, strong, and soft—and let them put them on their bodies. Weapons too should be distributed. (04-30-20)
वीराङ्गरूपाः पुरुषा नागराजकरोपमाः। नेमे जातु न युध्येरन्निति मे धीयते मतिः ॥०४-३०-२१॥
vīrāṅgarūpāḥ puruṣā nāgarājakaropamāḥ। neme jātu na yudhyeranniti me dhīyate matiḥ ॥04-30-21॥

(Having the form of heroic bodies, men, resembling the hands of the king of serpents; these ever not would fight—thus to me is considered thought.)
These men, heroic in form and with arms like the king of serpents, I do not ever think that they would not fight. (04-30-21)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु नृपतेर्वाक्यं त्वरितमानसः। शतानीकस्तु पार्थेभ्यो रथान्राजन्समादिशत् ॥ सहदेवाय राज्ञे च भीमाय नकुलाय च ॥०४-३०-२२॥
etac chrutvā tu nṛpater vākyaṃ tvarita-mānasaḥ। śatānīkas tu pārthebhyo rathān rājan samādiśat ॥ sahadevāya rājñe ca bhīmāya nakulāya ca ॥04-30-22॥

(This having heard but of the king's words, with hastened mind, Śatānīka but to the sons of Pṛthā chariots, O king, ordered; to Sahadeva, to the king and to Bhīma, to Nakula and. (04-30-22))

तान्प्रहृष्टास्ततः सूता राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः। निर्दिष्टान्नरदेवेन रथाञ्शीघ्रमयोजयन् ॥०४-३०-२३॥
tān prahṛṣṭās tataḥ sūtā rājabhakti-puraskṛtāḥ। nirdiṣṭān naradevena rathān śīghram ayojayan॥04-30-23॥

(Armours various, strong and soft, Virāṭ gave which to them faultless in action; those having put on on bodies, armed, they destroyers of foes.)
Virāṭ gave them various armour—some strong, some soft—to those faultless in action. Putting these on their bodies, they, destroyers of their enemies, became armed. (4-30-24)
तरस्विनश्छन्नरूपाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः। विराटमन्वयुः पश्चात्सहिताः कुरुपुङ्गवाः ॥ चत्वारो भ्रातरः शूराः पाण्डवाः सत्यविक्रमाः ॥०४-३०-२५॥
tarasvinaś channarūpāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ। virāṭam anvayuḥ paścāt sahitāḥ kurupuṅgavāḥ॥ catvāro bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ satyavikramāḥ॥04-30-25॥
[तरस्विनः (tarasvinaḥ) - energetic ones; छन्नरूपाः (channarūpāḥ) - in disguised forms; सर्वे (sarve) - all; युद्धविशारदाः (yuddhaviśāradāḥ) - skilled in battle; विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virāṭa; अन्वयुः (anvayuḥ) - they followed; पश्चात् (paścāt) - after; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; कुरुपुङ्गवाः (kurupuṅgavāḥ) - best among the Kurus; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - valiant; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सत्यविक्रमाः (satyavikramāḥ) - truly mighty;]
(Energetic ones, in disguised forms, all, skilled in battle, Virāṭa they followed, after, together, best among the Kurus. Four brothers, valiant, the Pāṇḍavas, truly mighty.)
All the energetic ones, skilled in battle and in disguise, together with the foremost among the Kurus, followed Virāṭa from behind. The four valiant brothers, the Pāṇḍavas of true might. (04-30-25)
भीमाश्च मत्तमातङ्गाः प्रभिन्नकरटामुखाः। क्षरन्त इव जीमूताः सुदन्ताः षष्टिहायनाः ॥०४-३०-२६॥
bhīmāś ca mattamātaṅgāḥ prabhinnakaraṭāmukhāḥ। kṣaranta iva jīmūtāḥ sudantāḥ ṣaṣṭihāyanāḥ ॥04-30-26॥
[भीमाः (bhīmāḥ) - terrible; powerful; च (ca) - and; मत्तमातङ्गाः (mattamātaṅgāḥ) - intoxicated elephants; प्रभिन्नकरटामुखाः (prabhinnakaraṭāmukhāḥ) - with broken tusks' mouths; क्षरन्त (kṣaranta) - flowing; इव (iva) - as if; like; जीमूताः (jīmūtāḥ) - clouds; सुदन्ताः (sudantāḥ) - with good teeth; षष्टिहायनाः (ṣaṣṭihāyanāḥ) - sixty years old;]
