वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततस्तेषां महाराज तत्रैवामिततेजसाम्। छद्मलिङ्गप्रविष्टानां पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ॥०४-३०-१॥
Then, O great king, right there were the Pāṇḍavas, those great-souled ones of limitless splendor, who had entered in disguise. (04-30-1)
व्यतीतः समयः सम्यग्वसतां वै पुरोत्तमे। कुर्वतां तस्य कर्माणि विराटस्य महीपतेः ॥०४-३०-२॥
The time passed as they resided well in the foremost city, carrying out the duties of King Virata. (04-30-2)
ततस्त्रयोदशस्यान्ते तस्य वर्षस्य भारत। सुशर्मणा गृहीतं तु गोधनं तरसा बहु ॥०४-३०-३॥
Then, O Bhārata, at the end of that thirteenth year, the herd of cattle was forcefully seized in great numbers by Suśarman. (04-30-3)
ततो जवेन महता गोपाः पुरमथाव्रजत्। अपश्यन्मत्स्यराजं च रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य कुण्डली ॥०४-३०-४॥
Then the cowherds, with great speed, approached the city. They saw the king of the fish and, having leaped down from the chariot, the coiled one. (04-30-4)
शूरैः परिवृतं योधैः कुण्डलाङ्गदधारिभिः। सद्भिश्च मन्त्रिभिः सार्धं पाण्डवैश्च नरर्षभैः ॥०४-३०-५॥
He was surrounded by brave warriors wearing earrings and armlets, together with virtuous counselors and the Pāṇḍavas, the best of men. (04-30-5)
तं सभायां महाराजमासीनं राष्ट्रवर्धनम्। सोऽब्रवीदुपसङ्गम्य विराटं प्रणतस्तदा ॥०४-३०-६॥
He, seeing the great king and prosperer of the kingdom seated in the assembly, then, bowing, approached Virata and spoke to him. (04-30-6)
अस्मान्युधि विनिर्जित्य परिभूय सबान्धवान्। गवां शतसहस्राणि त्रिगर्ताः कालयन्ति ते ॥ तान्परीप्स मनुष्येन्द्र मा नेशुः पशवस्तव ॥०४-३०-७॥
Having completely conquered us along with our kinsmen in battle, the Trigartas are driving away hundreds of thousands of your cows. O king among men, do not let your animals be taken; determine to recover them. (04-30-7)
तच्छ्रुत्वा नृपतिः सेनां मत्स्यानां समयोजयत्। रथनागाश्वकलिलां पत्तिध्वजसमाकुलाम् ॥०४-३०-८॥
Upon hearing that, the king assembled the Matsya army, teeming with chariots, elephants, and horses, and crowded with infantry and banners. (04-30-8)
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च तनुत्राण्यत्र भेजिरे। भानुमन्ति विचित्राणि सूपसेव्यानि भागशः ॥०४-३०-९॥
Kings and princes here partook of thin, shining, and variegated delicacies, to be eaten with soup, served in portions. (04-30-9)
सवज्रायसगर्भं तु कवचं तप्तकाञ्चनम्। विराटस्य प्रियो भ्राता शतानीकोऽभ्यहारयत् ॥०४-३०-१०॥
But Śatānīka, the beloved brother of Virāṭa, brought the armor made of molten gold with a core of thunderbolt-iron. (04-30-10)
सर्वपारसवं वर्म कल्याणपटलं दृढम्। शतानीकादवरजो मदिराश्वोऽभ्यहारयत् ॥०४-३०-११॥
The younger brother of Śatānīka, whose horses were spirited, brought near the firm, auspicious, all-protecting armor. (04-30-11)
शतसूर्यं शतावर्तं शतबिन्दु शताक्षिमत्। अभेद्यकल्पं मत्स्यानां राजा कवचमाहरत् ॥०४-३०-१२॥
The king brought an armor of the fishes that was like one with a hundred suns, a hundred circles, a hundred spots, and a hundred eyes, and was impervious. (04-30-12)
उत्सेधे यस्य पद्मानि शतं सौगन्धिकानि च। सुवर्णपृष्ठं सूर्याभं सूर्यदत्तोऽभ्यहारयत् ॥०४-३०-१३॥
Suryadatta brought from the reservoir of that person a hundred fragrant lotuses, golden-petalled and shining like the sun. (04-30-13)
दृढमायसगर्भं तु श्वेतं वर्म शताक्षिमत्। विराटस्य सुतो ज्येष्ठो वीरः शङ्खोऽभ्यहारयत् ॥०४-३०-१४॥
But the eldest son of Virāṭa, the hero Śaṅkha, brought the white armor with an iron core of Śatākṣimat. (04-30-14)
शतशश्च तनुत्राणि यथास्वानि महारथाः। योत्स्यमानाभ्यनह्यन्त देवरूपाः प्रहारिणः ॥०४-३०-१५॥
The great chariot-warriors, resplendent like gods and ready for battle, each donned their own hundreds of body-armors as they prepared to fight. (04-30-15)
सूपस्करेषु शुभ्रेषु महत्सु च महारथाः। पृथक्काञ्चनसंनाहान्रथेष्वश्वानयोजयन् ॥०४-३०-१६॥
The great chariot-warriors yoked the horses, each adorned with golden harnesses, to their large, shining, fully-equipped chariots. (04-30-16)
सूर्यचन्द्रप्रतीकाशो रथे दिव्ये हिरण्मयः। महानुभावो मत्स्यस्य ध्वज उच्छिश्रिये तदा ॥०४-३०-१७॥
Then, upon the divine golden chariot, the grandly majestic banner bearing Matsya, shining like the sun and moon, stood tall. (04-30-17)
अथान्यान्विविधाकारान्ध्वजान्हेमविभूषितान्। यथास्वं क्षत्रियाः शूरा रथेषु समयोजयन् ॥०४-३०-१८॥
Then the heroic kṣatriya warriors mounted banners of various forms, adorned with gold, on their respective chariots. (04-30-18)
अथ मत्स्योऽब्रवीद्राजा शतानीकं जघन्यजम्। कङ्कबल्लवगोपाला दामग्रन्थिश्च वीर्यवान् ॥ युध्येयुरिति मे बुद्धिर्वर्तते नात्र संशयः ॥०४-३०-१९॥
Then Matsya said, "King Śatānīka, the youngest one, Kaṅka, Ballava, Gopāla, Dāmagranthi and the mighty one should fight; this is my thought, and there is no doubt about it." (04-30-19)
एतेषामपि दीयन्तां रथा ध्वजपताकिनः। कवचानि विचित्राणि दृढानि च मृदूनि च ॥ प्रतिमुञ्चन्तु गात्रेषु दीयन्तामायुधानि च ॥०४-३०-२०॥
Let chariots adorned with banners be given to these men as well. Let them be supplied with armors—varied, strong, and soft—and let them put them on their bodies. Weapons too should be distributed. (04-30-20)
वीराङ्गरूपाः पुरुषा नागराजकरोपमाः। नेमे जातु न युध्येरन्निति मे धीयते मतिः ॥०४-३०-२१॥
These men, heroic in form and with arms like the king of serpents, I do not ever think that they would not fight. (04-30-21)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु नृपतेर्वाक्यं त्वरितमानसः। शतानीकस्तु पार्थेभ्यो रथान्राजन्समादिशत् ॥ सहदेवाय राज्ञे च भीमाय नकुलाय च ॥०४-३०-२२॥
Hearing these words of the king, Śatānīka, his mind full of haste, ordered chariots for the sons of Pṛthā—Sahadeva, the king (Yudhiṣṭhira), Bhīma, and Nakula, O king. (04-30-22)
तान्प्रहृष्टास्ततः सूता राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः। निर्दिष्टान्नरदेवेन रथाञ्शीघ्रमयोजयन् ॥०४-३०-२३॥
Then the delighted charioteers, honored due to their loyalty to the king, quickly yoked the chariots as ordered by the king. (04-30-23)
कवचानि विचित्राणि दृढानि च मृदूनि च। विराटः प्रादिशद्यानि तेषामक्लिष्टकर्मणाम् ॥ तान्यामुच्य शरीरेषु दंशितास्ते परन्तपाः ॥०४-३०-२४॥
Virāṭ gave them various armour—some strong, some soft—to those faultless in action. Putting these on their bodies, they, destroyers of their enemies, became armed. (4-30-24)
तरस्विनश्छन्नरूपाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः। विराटमन्वयुः पश्चात्सहिताः कुरुपुङ्गवाः ॥ चत्वारो भ्रातरः शूराः पाण्डवाः सत्यविक्रमाः ॥०४-३०-२५॥
All the energetic ones, skilled in battle and in disguise, together with the foremost among the Kurus, followed Virāṭa from behind. The four valiant brothers, the Pāṇḍavas of true might. (04-30-25)
भीमाश्च मत्तमातङ्गाः प्रभिन्नकरटामुखाः। क्षरन्त इव जीमूताः सुदन्ताः षष्टिहायनाः ॥०४-३०-२६॥
Terrible, intoxicated elephants, with mouths broken by tusks, streaming like clouds, sixty years old and having good teeth. (04-30-26)
स्वारूढा युद्धकुशलैः शिक्षितैर्हस्तिसादिभिः। राजानमन्वयुः पश्चाच्चलन्त इव पर्वताः ॥०४-३०-२७॥
Mounted with trained and battle-skilled elephant riders and others, they followed the king from behind, moving like mountains. (04-30-27)
विशारदानां वश्यानां हृष्टानां चानुयायिनाम्। अष्टौ रथसहस्राणि दश नागशतानि च ॥ षष्टिश्चाश्वसहस्राणि मत्स्यानामभिनिर्ययुः ॥०४-३०-२८॥
Eight thousand chariots, one thousand elephants, and sixty thousand horses of the Matsyas, all skilled, obedient, joyful, and loyal followers, marched out. (04-30-28)
तदनीकं विराटस्य शुशुभे भरतर्षभ। सम्प्रयातं महाराज निनीषन्तं गवां पदम् ॥०४-३०-२९॥
O great king, O bull of the Bharatas, that army of Virāṭa appeared splendid as it set forth, desiring to follow the track of the cows. (04-30-29)
तद्बलाग्र्यं विराटस्य सम्प्रस्थितमशोभत। दृढायुधजनाकीर्णं गजाश्वरथसङ्कुलम् ॥०४-३०-३०॥
The foremost army of Virāṭa, having set out, looked magnificent, filled with warriors bearing sturdy weapons, and crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots. (04-30-30)
