tamasābhiplute loke rajasā caiva bhārata। vyatiṣṭhan vai muhūrtaṁ tu vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ॥04-32-1॥

(By darkness pervaded, in the world, by dust and indeed, O Bhārata, standing indeed for a moment but with arrayed divisions the attackers.)
O Bhārata, in a world pervaded by darkness and dust, the warriors with arrayed divisions stood for a moment.
ततोऽन्धकारं प्रणुदन्नुदतिष्ठत चन्द्रमाः। कुर्वाणो विमलां रात्रिं नन्दयन्क्षत्रियान्युधि ॥०४-३२-२॥
tato'ndhakāraṃ praṇudannudatiṣṭhata candramāḥ। kurvāṇo vimalāṃ rātriṃ nandayankṣatriyānyudhi ॥04-32-2॥

(Then dispelling darkness, the Moon arose, making the night clear, delighting the Kshatriyas in battle.)
Then the Moon arose, dispelling the darkness, making the night pure and delighting the Kshatriyas on the battlefield. (04-32-2)
ततः प्रकाशमासाद्य पुनर्युद्धमवर्तत। घोररूपं ततस्ते स्म नावेक्षन्त परस्परम् ॥०४-३२-३॥
tataḥ prakāśam āsādya punar yuddham avartata। ghorarūpaṃ tataḥ te sma na avekṣanta parasparam॥04-32-3॥

(Then, having attained light, again the battle commenced. Terrible in form, then they indeed did not look at each other.)
Then, after it became light, the battle resumed once again. So terrible was its aspect that after that, they did not even look at each other. (04-32-3)
ततः सुशर्मा त्रैगर्तः सह भ्रात्रा यवीयसा। अभ्यद्रवन्मत्स्यराजं रथव्रातेन सर्वशः ॥०४-३२-४॥
tataḥ suśarmā traigartaḥ saha bhrātrā yavīyasā। abhyadravanmatsyarājaṃ rathavrātena sarvaśaḥ॥04-32-4॥

(Then Suśarmā, the king of the Trigartas, with his younger brother, rushed against the king of the Matsyas with a troop of chariots on all sides.)
Then Suśarmā, the king of Trigarta, along with his younger brother, attacked the king of Matsya from all sides with a troop of chariots. (04-32-4)
ततो रथाभ्यां प्रस्कन्द्य भ्रातरौ क्षत्रियर्षभौ। गदापाणी सुसंरब्धौ समभ्यद्रवतां हयान् ॥०४-३२-५॥
tato rathābhyāṃ praskandya bhrātarau kṣatriyarṣabhau. gadāpāṇī susaṃrabdhau samabhyadravatāṃ hayān ॥04-32-5॥

(Then from the two chariots, leaping down, the two brothers, chiefs among kṣatriyas, with clubs in their hands, very enraged, rushed towards the horses.)
Then the two brothers, chief among kṣatriyas, leapt down from their chariots, clubs in hand and greatly enraged, and rushed together at the horses. (04-32-5)
तथैव तेषां तु बलानि तानि; क्रुद्धान्यथान्योन्यमभिद्रवन्ति। गदासिखड्गैश्च परश्वधैश्च; प्रासैश्च तीक्ष्णाग्रसुपीतधारैः ॥०४-३२-६॥
tathaiva teṣāṃ tu balāni tāni; kruddhānyathānyonyam abhidravanti. gadāsi-khaḍgaiḥ ca paraśvadhaiḥ ca; prāsaiḥ ca tīkṣṇāgra-supīta-dhāraiḥ ॥04-32-6॥

(In the same way, their forces, however, those—enraged—then one another they rush against, with maces, swords, with swords and with axes and with spears and with sharp-pointed, well-polished blades.)

बलं तु मत्स्यस्य बलेन राजा; सर्वं त्रिगर्ताधिपतिः सुशर्मा। प्रमथ्य जित्वा च प्रसह्य मत्स्यं; विराटमोजस्विनमभ्यधावत् ॥०४-३२-७॥
balaṃ tu matsyasya balena rājā; sarvaṃ trigartādhipatiḥ suśarmā. pramathya jitvā ca prasahya matsyaṃ; virāṭamojasvinamabhyadhāvat ॥04-32-7॥
[बलं (balaṃ) - strength; तु (tu) - but; मत्स्यस्य (matsyasya) - of Matsya; बलेन (balena) - by strength; राजा (rājā) - the king; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; त्रिगर्ताधिपतिः (trigartādhipatiḥ) - the lord of Trigarta; सुशर्मा (suśarmā) - Suśarmā; प्रमथ्य (pramathya) - having crushed; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; च (ca) - and; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by force; मत्स्यं (matsyaṃ) - Matsya (Kingdom); विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virāṭa; ओजस्विनम् (ojasvinam) - the powerful; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - he rushed towards;]
(Strength but of Matsya by strength the king; all the lord of Trigarta Suśarmā, having crushed, having conquered and by force Matsya; Virāṭa the powerful he rushed towards.)
But the king Suśarmā, the lord of Trigarta, having overwhelmed all the power of Matsya by strength, and having conquered Matsya by force, rushed at the mighty Virāṭa. (04-32-7)
तौ निहत्य पृथग्धुर्यावुभौ च पार्ष्णिसारथी। विरथं मत्स्यराजानं जीवग्राहमगृह्णताम् ॥०४-३२-८॥
tau nihatya pṛthagdhuryāvubhau ca pārṣṇisārathī। virathaṃ matsyarājānaṃ jīvagrāham agṛhṇatām॥04-32-8॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; पृथग्धुर्यौ (pṛthagdhuryau) - the separate charioteers (of each side); उभौ (ubhau) - both; च (ca) - and; पार्ष्णिसारथी (pārṣṇisārathī) - the charioteers at the heels (rear drivers); विरथम् (viratham) - deprived of his chariot; मत्स्यराजानम् (matsyarājānam) - the king of the Matsyas; जीवग्राहम् (jīvagrāham) - alive (as a captive); अगृह्णताम् (agṛhṇatām) - they seized;]
(Those two, having slain both separate charioteers and the rear drivers, seized the king of the Matsyas, deprived of his chariot, alive (as a captive).)
The two of them, after killing both the charioteers and the rear drivers, captured the king of the Matsyas alive and chariotless. (04-32-8)
तमुन्मथ्य सुशर्मा तु रुदतीं वधुकामिव। स्यन्दनं स्वं समारोप्य प्रययौ शीघ्रवाहनः ॥०४-३२-९॥
tamunmathya suśarmā tu rudatīṃ vadhukāmiva। syandanaṃ svaṃ samāropya prayayau śīghrāvāhanaḥ ॥04-32-9॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उन्मथ्य (unmathya) - having overthrown; सुशर्मा (suśarmā) - Suśarmā; तु (tu) - but; रुदतीं (rudatīm) - weeping; वधुकामिव (vadhukāmiva) - like a bride-to-be; स्यन्दनं (syandanaṃ) - chariot; स्वं (svaṃ) - his own; समारोप्य (samāropya) - having mounted; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; शीघ्रवाहनः (śīghrāvāhanaḥ) - he whose vehicle is swift;]
(Having overthrown him, Suśarmā but, weeping like a bride-to-be, his own chariot having mounted, departed, he whose vehicle is swift.)
Suśarmā, after overthrowing him, like a weeping bride-to-be, mounted his own swift chariot and departed. (04-32-9)
तस्मिन्गृहीते विरथे विराटे बलवत्तरे। प्राद्रवन्त भयान्मत्स्यास्त्रिगर्तैरर्दिता भृशम् ॥०४-३२-१०॥
tasmin-gṛhīte virathe virāṭe balavattare। prādravanta bhayān matsyās trigartair arditā bhṛśam॥04-32-10॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that;, गृहीते (gṛhīte) - having been seized;, विरथे (virathe) - with the chariot lost;, विराटे (virāṭe) - Viraṭa;, बलवत्तरे (balavattare) - with the mightier (enemy);, प्राद्रवन्त (prādravanta) - fled;, भयान् (bhayāt) - from fear;, मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - the Matsyas;, त्रिगर्तैः (trigartaiḥ) - by the Trigartas;, अर्दिताः (arditāḥ) - harassed;, भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(In that (moment), with Viraṭa having been seized and (his) chariot lost, with (an) even stronger (enemy), the Matsyas, greatly harassed by the Trigartas, from fear, fled.)
At that time, when Viraṭa was captured and his chariot lost to a stronger enemy, the Matsyas, greatly harassed by the Trigartas, fled in fear. (04-32-10)
तेषु सन्त्रास्यमानेषु कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। अभ्यभाषन्महाबाहुं भीमसेनमरिंदमम् ॥०४-३२-११॥
teṣu santrāsyamāneṣu kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। abhyabhāṣan mahā-bāhuṃ bhīmasenam ariṃ-damam॥04-32-11॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - among them; सन्त्रास्यमानेषु (santrāsyamāneṣu) - being terrified; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; अभ्यभाषन् (abhyabhāṣan) - addressed; महाबाहुं (mahā-bāhuṃ) - mighty-armed; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; अरिंदमम् (ariṃ-damam) - subduer of enemies;]
(Among them being terrified, the son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira, addressed the mighty-armed Bhīmasena, subduer of enemies.)
While they were being terrified, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, addressed the mighty-armed Bhīmasena, subduer of enemies. (04-32-11)
मत्स्यराजः परामृष्टस्त्रिगर्तेन सुशर्मणा। तं मोक्षय महाबाहो न गच्छेद्द्विषतां वशम् ॥०४-३२-१२॥
matsyarājaḥ parāmṛṣṭas trigartena suśarmaṇā। taṁ mokṣaya mahābāho na gacched dviṣatāṁ vaśam ॥04-32-12॥
[मत्स्यराजः (matsyarājaḥ) - the king of the Matsyas; परामृष्टः (parāmṛṣṭaḥ) - afflicted; त्रिगर्तेन (trigartena) - by Trigarta; सुशर्मणा (suśarmaṇā) - by Suśarman; तं (taṁ) - him; मोक्षय (mokṣaya) - free; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; न (na) - not; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of enemies; वशम् (vaśam) - under control;]
(The king of the Matsyas, afflicted by Trigarta and Suśarman; him free, O mighty-armed, not should go under control of enemies.)
O mighty-armed one, the king of the Matsyas has been attacked by Trigarta and Suśarman; free him, so he does not fall under the power of the enemies. (04-32-12)
उषिताः स्मः सुखं सर्वे सर्वकामैः सुपूजिताः। भीमसेन त्वया कार्या तस्य वासस्य निष्कृतिः ॥०४-३२-१३॥
uṣitāḥ smaḥ sukhaṃ sarve sarvakāmaiḥ supūjitāḥ। bhīmasena tvayā kāryā tasya vāsasya niṣkṛtiḥ ॥04-32-13॥
[उषिताः (uṣitāḥ) - dwelt; स्मः (smaḥ) - we; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happily; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desires (fulfilled); सुपूजिताः (supūjitāḥ) - well-honored; भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - Bhīmasena; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वासस्य (vāsasya) - of the stay; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - recompense;]
(We have dwelt happily, all, with all desires (fulfilled), well-honored. Bhīmasena, by you, should be done the recompense of his stay.)
We all have dwelt happily and have been well-honored with all our wishes fulfilled. Bhīmasena, you should offer recompense for his hospitality for our stay. (04-32-13)

अहमेनं परित्रास्ये शासनात्तव पार्थिव। पश्य मे सुमहत्कर्म युध्यतः सह शत्रुभिः ॥०४-३२-१४॥
aham enaṁ paritrāsye śāsanāt tava pārthiva। paśya me sumahatkarmā yudhyataḥ saha śatrubhiḥ ॥04-32-14॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; एनम् (enam) - this (one); परित्रास्ये (paritrāsye) - shall cause to tremble; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by command; तव (tava) - of you; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; पश्य (paśya) - see; मे (me) - my; सुमहत्कर्म (sumahatkarmā) - great deed; युध्यतः (yudhyataḥ) - fighting; सह (saha) - together with; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - enemies;]
(I shall cause this (one) to tremble by your command, O king. See my great deed, fighting together with enemies.)
O king, by your command I will make this one tremble. Behold my great deed as I fight with the enemies. (04-32-14)
स्वबाहुबलमाश्रित्य तिष्ठ त्वं भ्रातृभिः सह। एकान्तमाश्रितो राजन्पश्य मेऽद्य पराक्रमम् ॥०४-३२-१५॥
svabāhu-balam āśritya tiṣṭha tvaṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। ekāntam āśrito rājan paśya me'dya parākramam॥04-32-15॥
[स्वबाहुबलम् (svabāhubalam) - one's own arm strength; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having taken refuge in; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together with; एकान्तम् (ekāntam) - to a secluded place; आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - having taken shelter; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पश्य (paśya) - see; मे (me) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; पराक्रमम् (parākramam) - valor;]
(Having taken refuge in your own arm strength, you stand with brothers together. Having taken shelter in a secluded place, O king, see my valor today.)
Relying on your own strength, stand here with your brothers. O king, having withdrawn to a secluded place, behold my valor today. (04-32-15)
सुस्कन्धोऽयं महावृक्षो गदारूप इव स्थितः। एनमेव समारुज्य द्रावयिष्यामि शात्रवान् ॥०४-३२-१६॥
suskandho'yaṁ mahāvṛkṣo gadārūpa iva sthitaḥ। enameva samārujya drāvayiṣyāmi śātravān ॥04-32-16॥
[सुस्कन्धः (suskandhaḥ) - with firm trunk; अयम् (ayam) - this; महावृक्षः (mahāvṛkṣaḥ) - great tree; गदारूपः (gadārūpaḥ) - in the form of a mace; इव (iva) - as if; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; एनम् (enam) - this (tree); एव (eva) - indeed; समारुज्य (samārujya) - having mounted; द्रावयिष्यामि (drāvayiṣyāmi) - shall drive away; शात्रवान् (śātravān) - enemies;]
(With a firm trunk, this great tree, standing as if in the form of a mace. Mounting this indeed, I shall drive away the enemies.)
This great tree with a firm trunk stands as if in the form of a mace. Mounting this very tree, I will drive away the enemies. (04-32-16)

taṃ mattam iva mātaṅgam vīkṣamāṇam vanaspatim। abravīt bhrātaram vīram dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥04-32-17॥

(Him, like an intoxicated elephant looking upon the tree, the king of righteousness Yudhiṣṭhira said to his heroic brother.)

मा भीम साहसं कार्षीस्तिष्ठत्वेष वनस्पतिः। मा त्वा वृक्षेण कर्माणि कुर्वाणमतिमानुषम् ॥ जनाः समवबुध्येरन्भीमोऽयमिति भारत ॥०४-३२-१८॥
mā bhīma sāhasaṃ kārṣīs tiṣṭhatu eṣa vanaspatiḥ। mā tvā vṛkṣeṇa karmāṇi kurvāṇam atimānuṣam ॥ janāḥ samavabudhyeran bhīmaḥ ayam iti bhārata ॥04-32-18॥

अन्यदेवायुधं किञ्चित्प्रतिपद्यस्व मानुषम्। चापं वा यदि वा शक्तिं निस्त्रिंशं वा परश्वधम् ॥०४-३२-१९॥
anyadevāyudhaṃ kiñcit pratipadyasva mānuṣam। cāpaṃ vā yadi vā śaktiṃ nistriṃśaṃ vā paraśvadham ॥04-32-19॥

यदेव मानुषं भीम भवेदन्यैरलक्षितम्। तदेवायुधमादाय मोक्षयाशु महीपतिम् ॥०४-३२-२०॥
yad eva mānuṣaṃ bhīma bhaved anyair alakṣitam। tad eva āyudham ādāya mokṣaya āśu mahīpatim॥04-32-20॥

Whatever human weapon there is of Bhīma, unnoticed by others, take up that weapon and quickly rescue the king. (04-32-20)
यमौ च चक्ररक्षौ ते भवितारौ महाबलौ। व्यूहतः समरे तात मत्स्यराजं परीप्सतः ॥०४-३२-२१॥
yamau ca cakrarakṣau te bhavitārau mahābalau। vyūhataḥ samare tāta matsyarājaṃ parīpsatau॥04-32-21॥

(The two sons of Yama and chariot guards, they will become strong of great might; from the array, in battle, dear one, the king of Matsya seeking (to seize).)
The two Ashvin twins, who are chariot guards and of great strength, will join the battle formation, dear one, seeking to capture the king of Matsya. (04-32-21)
ततः समस्तास्ते सर्वे तुरगानभ्यचोदयन्। दिव्यमस्त्रं विकुर्वाणास्त्रिगर्तान्प्रत्यमर्षणाः ॥०४-३२-२२॥
tataḥ samastās te sarve turagān abhyacodayan। divyam astraṃ vikurvāṇās trigartān praty amarṣaṇāḥ ॥04-32-22॥

(Then all of them, every one, drove the horses towards (the enemy), wielding the divine weapon, against the Trigartas, the angry men.)

तान्निवृत्तरथान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवान्सा महाचमूः। वैराटी परमक्रुद्धा युयुधे परमाद्भुतम् ॥०४-३२-२३॥
tān nivṛtta-rathān dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavān sā mahā-camūḥ। vairāṭī parama-kruddhā yuyudhe paramād-bhutam॥04-32-23॥

(Having seen those Pāṇḍavas who had dismounted from their chariots, that great army — the Virāṭa’s daughter, extremely enraged — engaged in a battle most wondrous.)
Upon seeing the Pāṇḍavas after they had left their chariots, the great army, led by the Virāṭa’s daughter, who was extremely enraged, fought in a truly astonishing way. (04-32-23)
सहस्रं न्यवधीत्तत्र कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। भीमः सप्तशतान्योधान्परलोकमदर्शयत् ॥ नकुलश्चापि सप्तैव शतानि प्राहिणोच्छरैः ॥०४-३२-२४॥
sahasraṃ nyavadhīttatra kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīmaḥ saptaśatānyodhānparalokamadarśayat ॥ nakulaścāpi saptaiva śatāni prāhiṇoccharaiḥ ॥04-32-24॥

(A thousand (he) killed there, son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira. Bhīma seven hundred warriors to the other world sent. Nakula also indeed seven hundreds dispatched with arrows.)

O bull among men, the valorous Sahadeva, upon the command of Yudhiṣṭhira, having broken through that great army of the Trigartas, slew three hundred of their heroes. (04-32-25)

tato rājannāśukārī kuntīputro vṛkodaraḥ। samāsādya suśarmāṇamaśvānasya vyapothayat ॥04-32-28॥

tato virāṭaḥ praskandya rathādatha suśarmaṇaḥ। gadām asya parāmṛśya tam evājaghnivān balī॥ sa cacāra gadāpāṇir vṛddho'pi taruṇo yathā॥04-32-31॥

तस्मिन्गृहीते विरथे त्रिगर्तानां महारथे। अभज्यत बलं सर्वं त्रैगर्तं तद्भयातुरम् ॥०४-३२-३३॥
tasmin gṛhīte virathe trigartānāṃ mahārathe। abhjatyata balaṃ sarvaṃ traigartaṃ tadbhayāturam॥04-32-33॥

When that great chariot-warrior of the Trigartas, deprived of his charioteer, was captured, the entire army of the Trigartas, terrified, was shattered. (04-32-33)
निवर्त्य गास्ततः सर्वाः पाण्डुपुत्रा महाबलाः। अवजित्य सुशर्माणं धनं चादाय सर्वशः ॥०४-३२-३४॥
nivartya gās tataḥ sarvāḥ pāṇḍu-putrā mahā-balāḥ। avajitya suśarmāṇam dhanaṃ ca ādāya sarvaśaḥ॥04-32-34॥

svabāhubalasampannā hrīniṣedhā yatavratāḥ। saṅgrāmaśiraso madhye tāṃ rātriṃ sukhino'vasan ॥04-32-35॥

ततो विराटः कौन्तेयानतिमानुषविक्रमान्। अर्चयामास वित्तेन मानेन च महारथान् ॥०४-३२-३६॥
tato virāṭaḥ kaunteyān atimānuṣa-vikramān। arcayāmāsa vittena mānena ca mahārathān॥04-32-36॥

ददान्यलङ्कृताः कन्या वसूनि विविधानि च। मनसश्चाप्यभिप्रेतं यद्वः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः ॥०४-३२-३८॥
dadāny alaṅkṛtāḥ kanyā vasūni vividhāni ca. manasaś cāpy abhipretaṃ yad vaḥ śatru-nibarhaṇāḥ ॥04-32-38॥
[ददानि (dadāni) - I shall give; अलङ्कृताः (alaṅkṛtāḥ) - adorned; कन्या (kanyā) - maids; वसूनि (vasūni) - treasures; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of (your) mind; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अभिप्रेतं (abhipretam) - desired; यत् (yat) - whatever; वः (vaḥ) - of you; शत्रुनिबर्हणाः (śatru-nibarhaṇāḥ) - destroyers of enemies;]
(I shall give adorned maids, treasures various and, of (your) mind also, whatever desired, O destroyers of enemies.)
I shall give you adorned maidens, various treasures, and whatever else is desired by your mind, O destroyers of enemies. (04-32-38)
युष्माकं विक्रमादद्य मुक्तोऽहं स्वस्तिमानिह। तस्माद्भवन्तो मत्स्यानामीश्वराः सर्व एव हि ॥०४-३२-३९॥
yuṣmākaṃ vikramād adya mukto'ham svastimān iha। tasmād bhavanto matsyānām īśvarāḥ sarva eva hi॥04-32-39॥
[युष्माकं (yuṣmākam) - of you (plural); विक्रमात् (vikramāt) - from valor; अद्य (adya) - today; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; अहम् (aham) - I; स्वस्तिमान् (svastimān) - blessed; in good condition; इह (iha) - here; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (gentlemen; plural); मत्स्यानाम् (matsyānām) - of the fishes; ईश्वराः (īśvarāḥ) - lords; masters; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly;]
(From your valor today, I freed, blessed, here. Therefore, you gentlemen of the fishes, lords all indeed certainly.)
Because of your valor, today I have been freed and am safe here. Therefore, all of you are truly the lords of the fishes. (04-32-39)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
तथाभिवादिनं मत्स्यं कौरवेयाः पृथक्पृथक्। ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः ॥०४-३२-४०॥
tathābhivādinaṃ matsyaṃ kauraveyāḥ pṛthakpṛthak। ūcuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve yudhiṣṭhira-purogamāḥ॥04-32-40॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; अभिवादिनं (abhivādinam) - one greeting respectfully; मत्स्यं (matsyam) - Matsya (the king of Matsya country); कौरवेयाः (kauraveyāḥ) - the sons of Kuru; पृथक् पृथक् (pṛthak pṛthak) - separately; individually; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; प्राञ्जलयः (prāñjalayaḥ) - with joined palms; सर्वे (sarve) - all; युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः (yudhiṣṭhira-purogamāḥ) - headed by Yudhishthira;]
(Thus, to the one greeting respectfully, Matsya, the sons of Kuru, separately, said, with joined palms, all, headed by Yudhishthira.)
Thus, all the sons of Kuru, headed by Yudhishthira, with joined palms, separately spoke to King Matsya, who had greeted them respectfully. (04-32-40)
प्रतिनन्दाम ते वाक्यं सर्वं चैव विशां पते। एतेनैव प्रतीताः स्मो यत्त्वं मुक्तोऽद्य शत्रुभिः ॥०४-३२-४१॥
pratinandāma te vākyaṃ sarvaṃ caiva viśāṃ pate। etenaiva pratītāḥ smo yat tvaṃ mukto'dya śatrubhiḥ॥04-32-41॥
[प्रतिनन्दाम (pratinandāma) - we welcome; ते (te) - your; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विशाम् (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; एतेन (etena) - by this; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रतीताः (pratītāḥ) - convinced; स्मः (smaḥ) - we are; यत् (yat) - that; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - set free; अद्य (adya) - today; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - from enemies;]
(We welcome your speech, all, and indeed, O lord of men. By this indeed we are convinced that you are set free today from enemies.)
We wholeheartedly receive all your words, O lord of men. By this, we are convinced that today you have been freed from your enemies. (04-32-41)
अथाब्रवीत्प्रीतमना मत्स्यराजो युधिष्ठिरम्। पुनरेव महाबाहुर्विराटो राजसत्तमः ॥ एहि त्वामभिषेक्ष्यामि मत्स्यराजोऽस्तु नो भवान् ॥०४-३२-४२॥
athābravīt prītamanā matsyarājo yudhiṣṭhiram। punareva mahābāhur virāṭo rājasattamaḥ ॥ ehi tvām abhiṣekṣyāmi matsyarājo 'stu no bhavān ॥04-32-42॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; प्रीतमना (prītamanā) - with pleased mind; मत्स्यराजः (matsyarājaḥ) - the king of the Matsyas; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; विराटः (virāṭaḥ) - Virata; राजसत्तमः (rājasattamaḥ) - best of kings; एहि (ehi) - come; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभिषेक्ष्यामि (abhiṣekṣyāmi) - I will anoint; मत्स्यराजः (matsyarājaḥ) - king of the Matsyas; अस्तु (astu) - may be; नः (naḥ) - for us; भवान् (bhavān) - yourself;]
(Then the pleased-minded king of the Matsyas said to Yudhishthira. Again indeed, the mighty-armed Virata, best of kings. 'Come, I will anoint you: may you yourself be the king of the Matsyas for us.' (04-32-42))
Then, with a pleased heart, the king of the Matsyas said to Yudhishthira once again: The mighty-armed Virata, best among kings, said, 'Come, I will anoint you; may you become the king of the Matsyas for us.' (04-32-42)
मनसश्चाप्यभिप्रेतं यत्ते शत्रुनिबर्हण। तत्तेऽहं सम्प्रदास्यामि सर्वमर्हति नो भवान् ॥०४-३२-४३॥
manasaś cāpy abhipretaṃ yat te śatru-nibarhaṇa। tat te' haṃ sampradāsyāmi sarvam arhati no bhavān॥04-32-43॥
[मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अभिप्रेतं (abhipretam) - desired; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - by you; शत्रु-निबर्हण (śatru-nibarhaṇa) - remover of enemies; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; सम्प्रदास्यामि (sampradāsyāmi) - shall fully give; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; नः (naḥ) - by us; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific);]
(And whatever is desired of the mind by you, O remover of enemies, that all I shall fully give to you; you deserve (it) by us.)
O remover of enemies, whatever is desired in your mind, I will grant all that to you; you are worthy of it from us. (04-32-43)
रत्नानि गाः सुवर्णं च मणिमुक्तमथापि वा। वैयाघ्रपद्य विप्रेन्द्र सर्वथैव नमोऽस्तु ते ॥०४-३२-४४॥
ratnāni gāḥ suvarṇaṃ ca maṇimuktam athāpi vā। vaiyāghrapadya viprendra sarvathaiva namo'stu te ॥04-32-44॥
[रत्नानि (ratnāni) - jewels; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; सुवर्णं (suvarṇam) - gold; च (ca) - and; मणिमुक्तम् (maṇimuktam) - gems and pearls; अथापि (athāpi) - moreover; वा (vā) - or; वैयाघ्रपद्य (vaiyāghrapadya) - from (the one) with tiger's feet; विप्रेन्द्र (viprendra) - O best of brāhmaṇas; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; एव (eva) - indeed; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; अस्तु (astu) - may there be; ते (te) - to you;]
(Jewels cows gold and gems and pearls moreover or from (the one) with tiger's feet O best of brāhmaṇas in every way indeed salutation may there be to you)
O best of brāhmaṇas! Whether it be jewels, cows, gold, or gems and pearls, or anything from the one with tiger's feet—indeed, in every way, my salutations be to you. (04-32-44)
त्वत्कृते ह्यद्य पश्यामि राज्यमात्मानमेव च। यतश्च जातः संरम्भः स च शत्रुर्वशं गतः ॥०४-३२-४५॥
tvatkṛte hy adya paśyāmi rājyam ātmānam eva ca। yataś ca jātaḥ saṁrambhaḥ sa ca śatrur vaśaṁ gataḥ॥04-32-45॥
[त्वत्कृते (tvatkṛte) - for your sake; हि (hi) - indeed; अद्य (adya) - today; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and; यतः (yataḥ) - because; च (ca) - and; जातः (jātaḥ) - has arisen; संरम्भः (saṁrambhaḥ) - anger; स (sa) - that; च (ca) - and; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; वशम् (vaśam) - control; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone;]
(For your sake indeed today I see the kingdom and myself only; because the anger which has arisen, and that enemy, have become controlled.)
Indeed, today, for your sake I see both the kingdom and even myself as under control; for whatever anger had arisen, that enemy is now subdued. (04-32-45)
ततो युधिष्ठिरो मत्स्यं पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत। प्रतिनन्दामि ते वाक्यं मनोज्ञं मत्स्य भाषसे ॥०४-३२-४६॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro matsyaṃ punarevābhyabhāṣata। pratinandāmi te vākyaṃ manojñaṃ matsya bhāṣase॥04-32-46॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - Matsya (the king of Matsya); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; प्रतिनन्दामि (pratinandāmi) - I welcome; ते (te) - your; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; मनोञ्ज्ञम् (manojñam) - pleasing; मत्स्य (matsya) - Matsya; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak;]
(Then Yudhiṣṭhira addressed Matsya again indeed. I welcome your speech, pleasing one, Matsya, you speak.)
Then Yudhiṣṭhira again addressed King Matsya, saying: "I welcome your pleasing words, O Matsya, that you have spoken." (04-32-46)
आनृशंस्यपरो नित्यं सुसुखः सततं भव। गच्छन्तु दूतास्त्वरितं नगरं तव पार्थिव ॥ सुहृदां प्रियमाख्यातुं घोषयन्तु च ते जयम् ॥०४-३२-४७॥
ānṛśaṁsyaparo nityaṁ susukhaḥ satataṁ bhava। gacchantu dūtāstvaritaṁ nagaraṁ tava pārthiva॥ suhṛdāṁ priyamākhyātuṁ ghoṣayantu ca te jayam॥04-32-47॥
[आनृशंस्यपरो (ānṛśaṁsyaparaḥ) - one intent upon compassion; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; सुसुखः (susukhaḥ) - very happy; सततं (satataṁ) - constantly; भव (bhava) - be; गच्छन्तु (gacchantu) - let go; दूताः (dūtāḥ) - messengers; त्वरितं (tvaritaṁ) - quickly; नगरं (nagaraṁ) - city; तव (tava) - your; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; सुहृदां (suhṛdāṁ) - of friends; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing news; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to declare; घोषयन्तु (ghoṣayantu) - let them proclaim; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; जयम् (jayam) - victory;]
(Intent upon compassion, always, very happy, constantly be. Let messengers quickly go to the city, your, O king. Of friends, pleasing news to declare, let them proclaim and your victory.)
Always be intent upon compassion and remain continually happy. Let your messengers quickly go, O king, to your city, to declare pleasing news to your friends and to announce your victory. (04-32-47)
ततस्तद्वचनान्मत्स्यो दूतान्राजा समादिशत्। आचक्षध्वं पुरं गत्वा सङ्ग्रामे विजयं मम ॥०४-३२-४८॥
tatas tad-vacanān matsyo dūtān rājā samādiśat। ācakṣadhvaṃ puraṃ gatvā saṅgrāme vijayaṃ mama ॥04-32-48॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तद्वचनात् (tad-vacanāt) - from those words; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - Matsya (king); दूतान् (dūtān) - messengers; राजा (rājā) - the king; समादिशत् (samādiśat) - ordered; आचक्षध्वम् (ācakṣadhvam) - announce; पुरम् (puram) - city; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in the battle; विजयम् (vijayam) - victory; मम (mama) - my;]
(Then from those words, Matsya, the king, ordered messengers: "Announce, having gone to the city, in the battle, my victory." (04-32-48))
Then, on hearing those words, Matsya, the king, ordered the messengers: "Go to the city and announce my victory in battle." (04-32-48)
कुमाराः समलङ्कृत्य पर्यागच्छन्तु मे पुरात्। वादित्राणि च सर्वाणि गणिकाश्च स्वलङ्कृताः ॥०४-३२-४९॥
kumārāḥ samalaṅkṛtya paryāgacchantu me purāt । vāditrāṇi ca sarvāṇi gaṇikāś ca swalaṅkṛtāḥ ॥04-32-49॥
[कुमाराः (kumārāḥ) - princes; समलङ्कृत्य (samalaṅkṛtya) - having well adorned; पर्यागच्छन्तु (paryāgacchantu) - let them come around; मे (me) - to me; पुरात् (purāt) - from the city; वादित्राणि (vāditrāṇi) - musical instruments; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; गणिकाः (gaṇikāḥ) - courtesans; च (ca) - and; स्वलङ्कृताः (swalaṅkṛtāḥ) - well adorned;]
(Princes, having well adorned, let them come to me from the city. Musical instruments also all, and courtesans and well adorned.)
Let the princes, having been well adorned, come to me from the city. And let all the musical instruments and the courtesans, also well adorned, come as well. (04-32-49)
ते गत्वा केवलां रात्रिमथ सूर्योदयं प्रति। विराटस्य पुराभ्याशे दूता जयमघोषयन् ॥०४-३२-५०॥
te gatvā kevalāṃ rātrim atha sūryodayaṃ prati। virāṭasya purābhyāśe dūtā jayam aghoṣayan ॥04-32-50॥
[ते (te) - they; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; केवलाम् (kevalām) - entire; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; अथ (atha) - then; सूर्योदयं (sūryodayam) - sunrise; प्रति (prati) - towards; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; पुराभ्याशे (purābhyāśe) - near the city; दूताः (dūtāḥ) - the messengers; जयम् (jayam) - victory; अघोषयन् (aghoṣayan) - announced;]
(They, having gone the entire night, then towards sunrise, near the city of Virāṭa, the messengers announced victory.)
After journeying through the entire night, then at sunrise, the messengers proclaimed victory near the city of Virāṭa. (04-32-50)
