yāte trigartaṃ matsye tu paśūṃstānsvānparīpsati। duryodhanaḥ sahāmātyo virāṭamupayādatha ॥04-33-1॥
[याते (yāte) - having gone away; (they) having departed; त्रिगर्तं (trigartaṃ) - to the Trigartas; towards the Trigarta country; मत्स्ये (matsye) - in the Matsya (land); तु (tu) - but; पशूंस्तान् (paśūṃstāñ) - those cattle; those animals; स्वान् (svān) - his own; their own; परीप्सति (parīpsati) - desires to seize; wishes to obtain; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; सहामात्यः (sahāmātyaḥ) - with his minister; विराटम् (virāṭam) - to Virata; towards Virata (the king); उपयात् (upayāt) - approached; went toward; अथ (atha) - then;]
(When (they) had gone to the Trigartas, but in Matsya, desiring to seize those their own cattle, Duryodhana with his minister then approached Virata.)

भीष्मो द्रोणश्च कर्णश्च कृपश्च परमास्त्रवित्। द्रौणिश्च सौबलश्चैव तथा दुःशासनः प्रभुः ॥०४-३३-२॥

विविंशतिर्विकर्णश्च चित्रसेनश्च वीर्यवान्। दुर्मुखो दुःसहश्चैव ये चैवान्ये महारथाः ॥०४-३३-३॥

एते मत्स्यानुपागम्य विराटस्य महीपतेः। घोषान्विद्राव्य तरसा गोधनं जह्रुरोजसा ॥०४-३३-४॥
ete matsyānupāgamya virāṭasya mahīpateḥ। ghoṣān vidrāvya tarasā godhanaṃ jahrur ojasā ॥04-33-4॥
[एते (ete) - these; मत्स्यानुपागम्य (matsyānupāgamya) - having approached Matsya (country); विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; महीपतेः (mahīpateḥ) - of the king (lord of the earth); घोषान् (ghoṣān) - the cow-pens; विद्राव्य (vidrāvya) - having driven away; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; गोधनं (godhanam) - cattle; जह्रु: (jahrur) - they seized; ओजसा (ojasā) - with vigor;]
(These, having approached Matsya (country), of Virāṭa, of the king, the cow-pens having driven away by force, the cattle they seized with vigor.)
These (others), having approached the country of Matsya belonging to King Virāṭa, forcibly drove away the cow-pens and seized the cattle with vigor. (4-33-4)
षष्टिं गवां सहस्राणि कुरवः कालयन्ति ते। महता रथवंशेन परिवार्य समन्ततः ॥०४-३३-५॥
ṣaṣṭiṁ gavāṁ sahasrāṇi kuravaḥ kālayanti te। mahatā rathavaṁśena parivārya samantataḥ॥04-33-5॥

(Sixty thousands of cows the Kurus drive, they, with a great line of chariots having surrounded on all sides.)
The Kurus are driving sixty thousand cows, having surrounded them on all sides with a great line of chariots. (04-33-5)
गोपालानां तु घोषेषु हन्यतां तैर्महारथैः। आरावः सुमहानासीत्सम्प्रहारे भयङ्करे ॥०४-३३-६॥
gopālānāṃ tu ghoṣeṣu hanyatāṃ tair mahārathaiḥ। ārāvaḥ sumahān āsīt samprahāre bhayaṅkare ॥04-33-6॥
[गोपालानां (gopālānāṃ) - of the cowherds; तु (tu) - but; घोषेषु (ghoṣeṣu) - in the settlements; हन्यतां (hanyatām) - let them be killed; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; महारथैः (mahārathaiḥ) - by the great chariot-warriors; आरावः (ārāvaḥ) - clamor; uproar; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सम्प्रहारे (samprahāre) - in the battle; भयङ्करे (bhayaṅkare) - terrible;]
(Of the cowherds but in the settlements let them be killed by those great chariot-warriors; clamor very great was in the terrible battle.)
But in the settlements of the cowherds, let them be slain by those great chariot-warriors; a very great uproar arose in the terrible combat. (04-33-6)
गवाध्यक्षस्तु सन्त्रस्तो रथमास्थाय सत्वरः। जगाम नगरायैव परिक्रोशंस्तदार्तवत् ॥०४-३३-७॥
gavādhyakṣas tu santrasto ratham āsthāya satvaraḥ। jagāma nagarāyaiva parikrośaṃs tad ārtavat॥04-33-7॥
[गवाध्यक्षः (gavādhyakṣaḥ) - chief of cows; तु (tu) - but; सन्त्रस्तः (santrastaḥ) - terrified; रथमास्थाय (ratham āsthāya) - mounting the chariot; सत्वरः (satvaraḥ) - swiftly; जगाम (jagāma) - went; नगराय (nagarāya) - to the city; एव (eva) - only; परिक्रोशन् (parikrośan) - crying out; तदा (tadā) - then; आर्तवत् (ārtavat) - distressfully;]
(The chief of cows, but terrified, mounting the chariot swiftly, went to the city only, crying out then in distress.)
But the chief of the cows, terrified, swiftly mounted his chariot and went straight to the city, crying out in distress. (04-33-7)
स प्रविश्य पुरं राज्ञो नृपवेश्माभ्ययात्ततः। अवतीर्य रथात्तूर्णमाख्यातुं प्रविवेश ह ॥०४-३३-८॥
sa praviśya puraṃ rājño nṛpaveśmābhyayāt tataḥ। avatīrya rathāt tūrṇam ākhyātuṃ praviveśa ha ॥04-33-8॥
[स (sa) - he; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; पुरं (puraṃ) - city; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; नृपवेश्म (nṛpa-veśma) - royal palace; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - he approached; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having alighted; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to tell; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - he entered; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He, having entered the city of the king, approached the royal palace; then, having alighted from the chariot, quickly to tell (the news), he indeed entered.)
Having entered the king's city, he approached the royal palace; then, getting down from the chariot, he entered quickly to report (the matter). (04-33-8)
दृष्ट्वा भूमिञ्जयं नाम पुत्रं मत्स्यस्य मानिनम्। तस्मै तत्सर्वमाचष्ट राष्ट्रस्य पशुकर्षणम् ॥०४-३३-९॥
dṛṣṭvā bhūmiñjayaṃ nāma putraṃ matsyasya māninam। tasmai tatsarvamācaṣṭa rāṣṭrasya paśukarṣaṇam॥04-33-9॥

Seeing Bhūmiñjaya, the proud son of Matsya, he related to him everything about the kingdom's cattle-yoking. (04-33-9)
षष्टिं गवां सहस्राणि कुरवः कालयन्ति ते। तद्विजेतुं समुत्तिष्ठ गोधनं राष्ट्रवर्धनम् ॥०४-३३-१०॥
ṣaṣṭiṁ gavāṁ sahasrāṇi kuravaḥ kālayanti te। tadvijetuṁ samuttiṣṭha godhanaṁ rāṣṭravardhanam ॥04-33-10॥
[षष्टिं (ṣaṣṭim) - sixty; गवां (gavām) - of cows; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; कालयन्ति (kālayanti) - seize; ते (te) - they; तत् (tat) - that; विजेतुम् (vijetum) - to conquer; समुत्तिष्ठ (samuttiṣṭha) - arise; गोधनं (godhanam) - wealth of cows; राष्ट्रवर्धनम् (rāṣṭravardhanam) - nation-increasing;]
(Sixty thousands of cows the Kurus seize, they. That to conquer, arise, the wealth of cows, nation-increasing.)
The Kurus are seizing sixty thousand cows. Arise to reclaim that herd of cows, for such wealth increases the nation. (04-33-10)
राजपुत्र हितप्रेप्सुः क्षिप्रं निर्याहि वै स्वयम्। त्वां हि मत्स्यो महीपालः शून्यपालमिहाकरोत् ॥०४-३३-११॥
rājaputra hitaprepsuḥ kṣipraṃ niryāhi vai svayam। tvāṃ hi matsyo mahīpālaḥ śūnyapālam ihākarot ॥04-33-11॥
[राजपुत्र (rājaputra) - prince; हितप्रेप्सुः (hitaprepsuḥ) - desiring benefit; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; निर्याहि (niryāhi) - go out; वै (vai) - indeed; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself; त्वां (tvām) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - Matsya (the king); महीपालः (mahīpālaḥ) - king; शून्यपालम् (śūnyapālam) - keeper of an empty (place); इह (iha) - here; अकरोत् (akarot) - made;]
(Prince, desiring benefit, quickly go out indeed yourself. You indeed Matsya the king made (you) the keeper of an empty (place) here.)
Prince, wishing your welfare, do go out quickly yourself. Indeed, King Matsya has made you the keeper of an empty place here. (04-33-11)
त्वया परिषदो मध्ये श्लाघते स नराधिपः। पुत्रो ममानुरूपश्च शूरश्चेति कुलोद्वहः ॥०४-३३-१२॥
tvayā pariṣado madhye ślāghate sa narādhipaḥ। putro mamānurūpaś ca śūraś ceti kulodvahaḥ ॥04-33-12॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; परिषदः (pariṣadaḥ) - assembly; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst (of); श्लाघते (ślāghate) - praises; स (sa) - he; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - the son; मम (mama) - my; अनुरूपः (anurūpaḥ) - suitable (to); च (ca) - and; शूरः (śūraḥ) - heroic; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; कुलोद्वहः (kulodvahaḥ) - the best of the lineage;]
(By you, in the midst of the assembly, he, the king, praises: "my son, suitable (to me) and heroic", thus the best of the lineage.)
In the midst of the assembly, the king praises you as "my son, worthy (of me) and heroic", O best of the lineage. (04-33-12)
इष्वस्त्रे निपुणो योधः सदा वीरश्च मे सुतः। तस्य तत्सत्यमेवास्तु मनुष्येन्द्रस्य भाषितम् ॥०४-३३-१३॥
iṣvastre nipuṇo yodhaḥ sadā vīraś ca me sutaḥ। tasya tat satyam evāstu manuṣyendrasya bhāṣitam ॥04-33-13॥
[इष्वस्त्रे (iṣvastre) - in bow and arrow; निपुणः (nipuṇaḥ) - skilled; योधः (yodhaḥ) - warrior; सदा (sadā) - always; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्तु (astu) - may be; मनुष्येन्द्रस्य (manuṣyendrasya) - of the king of men; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - utterance;]
(My son, always a hero, a warrior skilled in bow and arrow, may that utterance of the king of men indeed be truth for him.)
My son, ever valiant and skilled in weaponry, is a warrior; may the words spoken by the king of men become true for him. (04-33-13)
आवर्तय कुरूञ्जित्वा पशून्पशुमतां वर। निर्दहैषामनीकानि भीमेन शरतेजसा ॥०४-३३-१४॥
āvartaya kurūñ jitvā paśūn paśumatāṃ vara। nirdaha eṣām anīkāni bhīmena śaratejasā॥04-33-14॥

O best among the wealthy, having conquered the Kurus, drive back the herds; burn their armies with the fierce power of your arrows. (04-33-14)
धनुश्च्युतै रुक्मपुङ्खैः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः। द्विषतां भिन्ध्यनीकानि गजानामिव यूथपः ॥०४-३३-१५॥
dhanuścyutai rukmapuṅkhaiḥ śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ। dviṣatāṃ bhindhyanīkāni gajānāmiva yūthapaḥ॥04-33-15॥
[धनुश्च्युतै (dhanuś-cyutai) - by those discharged from the bow; रुक्मपुङ्खैः (rukma-puṅkhaiḥ) - with gold-feathered; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows; सन्नतपर्वभिः (saṃnata-parvabhiḥ) - having curved joints; द्विषतां (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; भिन्ध्यनीकानि (bhindhya-anīkāni) - piercing the ranks; गजानामिव (gajānām iva) - like (those) of elephants; यूथपः (yūthapaḥ) - the chief (of a herd);]
(By arrows discharged from the bow, with golden feathers, having curved joints, piercing the ranks of the enemies, like the chief of a herd among elephants.)
With arrows shot from his bow, gold-feathered and having curved joints, the chief pierced the enemy ranks, just as the leader of a herd does among elephants. (04-33-15)
पाशोपधानां ज्यातन्त्रीं चापदण्डां महास्वनाम्। शरवर्णां धनुर्वीणां शत्रुमध्ये प्रवादय ॥०४-३३-१६॥
pāśopadhānāṃ jyātantrīṃ cāpadaṇḍāṃ mahāsvanām। śaravarṇāṃ dhanurvīṇāṃ śatrumadhye pravādaya ॥04-33-16॥
[पाशोपधानां (pāśopadhānām) - with evil nooses laid as traps; ज्यातन्त्रीं (jyātantrīm) - with bowstring as string; चापदण्डां (cāpadaṇḍām) - with the bow-staff as body; महास्वनाम् (mahāsvanām) - producing great sound; शरवर्णां (śaravarṇām) - with arrows as frets; धनुर्वीणां (dhanurvīṇām) - the bow as vīṇā (lute); शत्रुमध्ये (śatrumadhye) - in the midst of enemies; प्रवादय (pravādaya) - play (as an instrument);]
(With evil nooses laid as traps, with bowstring as string, with the bow-staff as body, producing great sound, with arrows as frets, the bow as vīṇā (lute), in the midst of enemies, play (it as an instrument).)
In the midst of enemies, play the bow, which has snares as its traps, the bowstring as the string, the bow-staff as its body, arrows for frets, producing a great sound, just like a vīṇā (lute). (04-33-16)
श्वेता रजतसङ्काशा रथे युज्यन्तु ते हयाः। ध्वजं च सिंहं सौवर्णमुच्छ्रयन्तु तवाभिभोः ॥०४-३३-१७॥
śvetā rajatasaṅkāśā rathe yujyantu te hayāḥ। dhvajaṃ ca siṃhaṃ sauvarṇam ucchrayantu tavābhibhoḥ ॥04-33-17॥
[श्वेता (śvetā) - white; रजतसङ्काशा (rajatasaṅkāśā) - silver-like in appearance; रथे (rathe) - to the chariot; युज्यन्तु (yujyantu) - may be yoked; ते (te) - your; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; ध्वजं (dhvajam) - banner; च (ca) - and; सिंहं (siṃham) - lion; सौवर्णम् (sauvarṇam) - golden; उच्छ्रयन्तु (ucchrayantu) - may they raise/alight; तव (tava) - your; अभिभोः (abhibhoḥ) - O great one;]
(White, silver-like horses may be yoked to your chariot. The banner and the golden lion may they raise, O great one.)
May white, silver-like horses be yoked to your chariot, and may the golden lion banner be raised for you, O mighty one. (04-33-17)
रुक्मपुङ्खाः प्रसन्नाग्रा मुक्ता हस्तवता त्वया। छादयन्तु शराः सूर्यं राज्ञामायुर्निरोधिनः ॥०४-३३-१८॥
rukmapuṅkhāḥ prasannāgrā muktā hastavatā tvayā। chādayantu śarāḥ sūryaṃ rājñām āyurnirodhinaḥ॥04-33-18॥
[रुक्मपुङ्खाः (rukmapuṅkhāḥ) - having golden-feathered; प्रसन्नाग्राः (prasannāgrāḥ) - with shining points; मुक्ताः (muktāḥ) - released; हस्तवता (hastavatā) - by you who possesses a hand; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; छादयन्तु (chādayantu) - may cover; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; सूर्यम् (sūryam) - the sun; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of the kings; आयुः (āyuḥ) - the life; निरोधिनः (nirodhinaḥ) - that obstruct;]
(Golden-feathered, shining-pointed, released by you who possesses a hand—may the arrows cover the sun, obstructing the life of the kings.)
May the golden-feathered, bright-tipped arrows released by your hand cover the sun and cut off the life of the kings. (04-33-18)
रणे जित्वा कुरून्सर्वान्वज्रपाणिरिवासुरान्। यशो महदवाप्य त्वं प्रविशेदं पुरं पुनः ॥०४-३३-१९॥
raṇe jitvā kurūn sarvān vajrapāṇiḥ iva āsurān। yaśaḥ mahat avāpya tvaṃ praviśet am puram punaḥ ॥04-33-19॥
[रणे (raṇe) - in battle; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; वज्रपाणिः (vajrapāṇiḥ) - Vajrapāṇi (the wielder of the thunderbolt, i.e., Indra); इव (iva) - like; असुरान् (āsurān) - the Asuras; यशः (yaśaḥ) - renown; महत् (mahat) - great; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; प्रविशेत् (praviśet) - should enter; अम् (am) - this; पुरम् (puram) - city; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(In battle having conquered all the Kurus, like Vajrapāṇi (Indra) (conquering) the Asuras, having obtained great renown you should enter this city again.)
After defeating all the Kurus in battle, like Indra with his thunderbolt defeated the Asuras, and having gained great fame, you should enter this city again. (04-33-19)
त्वं हि राष्ट्रस्य परमा गतिर्मत्स्यपतेः सुतः। गतिमन्तो भवन्त्वद्य सर्वे विषयवासिनः ॥०४-३३-२०॥
tvaṃ hi rāṣṭrasya paramā gatir matsyapateḥ sutaḥ। gatimanto bhavantv adya sarve viṣayavāsinaḥ॥04-33-20॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; राष्ट्रस्य (rāṣṭrasya) - of the kingdom; परमा (paramā) - supreme; गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; मत्स्यपतेः (matsyapateḥ) - of the king of the Matsyas; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; गतिमन्तः (gatimantaḥ) - possessing speed; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - may become; अद्य (adya) - today; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विषयवासिनः (viṣayavāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of the kingdom;]
(You indeed of the kingdom supreme refuge, O king of the Matsyas' son. Possessing speed may become today all the inhabitants of the kingdom.)
You are indeed the supreme refuge of the kingdom, O son of the king of the Matsyas. Today, may all the inhabitants of the kingdom become swift. (04-33-20)
स्त्रीमध्य उक्तस्तेनासौ तद्वाक्यमभयङ्करम्। अन्तःपुरे श्लाघमान इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०४-३३-२१॥
