adyā ham anugaccheyaṃ dṛḍha-dhanvā gavāṃ padam। yadi me sā rathiḥ kaścid bhaved aśveṣu kovidaḥ ॥04-34-1॥

(Him indeed I do not find, who for me as a charioteer would be the man; see all of you, the charioteer quickly, my yoked [chariot] about to depart.)
I do not find a man who would serve as my charioteer; look, all of you, at my charioteer who has quickly yoked my chariot and is about to depart. (04-34-2)
अष्टाविंशतिरात्रं वा मासं वा नूनमन्ततः। यत्तदासीन्महद्युद्धं तत्र मे सारथिर्हतः ॥०४-३४-३॥
aṣṭāviṃśatirātraṃ vā māsaṃ vā nūnamantataḥ। yattadāsīnmahadyuddhaṃ tatra me sārathirhataḥ॥04-34-3॥

(Twenty-eight nights or a month or certainly in the end, which that was a great battle, there my charioteer was killed.)

स लभेयं यदि त्वन्यं हययानविदं नरम्। त्वरावानद्य यात्वाहं समुच्छ्रितमहाध्वजम् ॥०४-३४-४॥
sa labheyaṁ yadi tva anyaṁ hayayānavidaṁ naram। tvarāvān adya yātu āham samucchritamahādhvajam॥04-34-4॥

If I should obtain another man not skilled in driving the chariot instead of you, I—being swift—will go today with the greatly raised banner. (04-34-4)
विगाह्य तत्परानीकं गजवाजिरथाकुलम्। शस्त्रप्रतापनिर्वीर्यान्कुरूञ्जित्वानये पशून् ॥०४-३४-५॥
vigāhya tat-parānīkaṃ gaja-vāji-rathākulam। śastra-pratāpa-nirvīryān kurūn jitvā anaye paśūn ॥04-34-5॥

दुर्योधनं शान्तनवं कर्णं वैकर्तनं कृपम्। द्रोणं च सह पुत्रेण महेष्वासान्समागतान् ॥०४-३४-६॥
duryodhanaṃ śāntanavaṃ karṇaṃ vaikartanaṃ kṛpam। droṇaṃ ca saha putreṇa maheṣvāsānsamāgatān ॥04-34-6॥

[वित्रासयित्वा (vitrāsayitvā) - having caused to be terrified; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; दानवानिव (dānavān iva) - like (he who terrifies) the Dānavas; वज्रभृत् (vajrabhṛt) - Vajrabhṛt; (the bearer of the thunderbolt; i.e., Indra); अनेनैव (anenaiva) - by this very; मुहूर्तेन (muhūrtena) - moment; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रत्यानये (pratyānaye) - I will bring back; पशून् (paśūn) - the cattle;]
(Having terrified (the enemy), in battle, like (Indra) the bearer of the thunderbolt (terrifies) the Dānavas; by this very moment I will again bring back the cattle.)
Just as Indra, the bearer of the thunderbolt, terrifies the Dānavas in battle, so, having caused terror, I will bring back the cattle again within this very moment. (04-34-7)
शून्यमासाद्य कुरवः प्रयान्त्यादाय गोधनम्। किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यदहं तत्र नाभवम् ॥०४-३४-८॥
śūnyam āsādya kuravaḥ prayānti ādāya go-dhanam। kiṃ nu śakyaṃ mayā kartum yad ahaṃ tatra na abhavam॥04-34-8॥
[शून्यम् (śūnyam) - empty; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; प्रयान्ति (prayānti) - go; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; गोधनम् (go-dhanam) - cattle-wealth; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुं (kartum) - to do; यत् (yat) - which; अहम् (aham) - I; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; अभवम् (abhavam) - was;]
(Empty having reached, the Kurus go, having taken the cattle-wealth. What indeed possible by me to do, which I there not was.)
The Kurus, having found it empty, take away the cattle-wealth and go. What could I possibly do since I was not there? (04-34-8)
पश्येयुरद्य मे वीर्यं कुरवस्ते समागताः। किं नु पार्थोऽर्जुनः साक्षादयमस्मान्प्रबाधते ॥०४-३४-९॥
paśyeyur adya me vīryaṃ kuravas te samāgatāḥ। kiṃ nu pārtho 'rjunaḥ sākṣād ayam asmān prabādhate॥04-34-9॥
[पश्येयुः (paśyeyuḥ) - may they see; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - my; वीर्यं (vīryam) - power; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; ते (te) - those; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; किं (kiṃ) - what? नु (nu) - indeed; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - the son of Pṛthā; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; अयम् (ayam) - this; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; प्रबाधते (prabādhate) - overpowers;]
(May they see today my power, those assembled Kurus. What indeed, Pārtha Arjuna directly this us overpowers.)
Let those assembled Kurus witness my power today. How is it that this Pārtha, Arjuna, is overpowering us directly? (04-34-9)

तस्य तद्वचनं स्त्रीषु भाषतः स्म पुनः पुनः। नामर्षयत पाञ्चाली बीभत्सोः परिकीर्तनम् ॥०४-३४-१०॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ strīṣu bhāṣataḥ sma punaḥ punaḥ. nāmarṣayata pāñcālī bībhatsoḥ parikīrtanam ॥04-34-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तद्वचनम् (tadvacanam) - those words; स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - among women; भाषतः (bhāṣataḥ) - speaking; स्म (sma) - indeed; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; नामर्षयत (nāmarṣayata) - did not tolerate; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Panchali (Draupadi); बीभत्सोः (bībhatsoḥ) - of Bibhatsu (Arjuna); परिकीर्तनम् (parikīrtanam) - mention, repeated narration;]
(Of him those words among women speaking indeed again and again did not tolerate Panchali of Bibhatsu the mention.)
Panchali did not tolerate the repeated mention of Bibhatsu (Arjuna) by him as he spoke those words among the women. (04-34-10)
अथैनमुपसङ्गम्य स्त्रीमध्यात्सा तपस्विनी। व्रीडमानेव शनकैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०४-३४-११॥
athainam upasaṅgamya strī-madhyāt sā tapasvinī। vrīḍamāneva śanakair idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥04-34-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; उपसङ्गम्य (upasaṅgamya) - having approached; स्त्री-मध्यात् (strī-madhyāt) - from among the women; सा (sā) - she; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - the austere woman; व्रीडमाना (vrīḍamānā) - being bashful; इव (iva) - as if; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - slowly; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Then, having approached him from among the women, she, the austere woman, being bashful as if, slowly spoke this speech.)
Then the ascetic woman, as if bashful, slowly approached him from among the women and spoke these words. (04-34-11)
योऽसौ बृहद्वारणाभो युवा सुप्रियदर्शनः। बृहन्नडेति विख्यातः पार्थस्यासीत्स सारथिः ॥०४-३४-१२॥
yo'sau bṛhadvāraṇābho yuvā supriyadarśanaḥ। bṛhannaḍeti vikhyātaḥ pārthasyāsīts sārathiḥ॥04-34-12॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; बृहद्वारणाभः (bṛhadvāraṇābhaḥ) - having the appearance of a great elephant; युवा (yuvā) - young man; सुप्रियदर्शनः (supriyadarśanaḥ) - of pleasing appearance; बृहन्नडः (bṛhannaḍaḥ) - Bṛhannaḍa (proper noun); इति (iti) - thus; विख्यातः (vikhyātaḥ) - famous; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सः (saḥ) - he; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer;]
(Who that great-elephant-like young man of pleasing appearance, as Bṛhannaḍa is thus famous, of Pārtha was he charioteer.)

धनुष्यनवरश्चासीत्तस्य शिष्यो महात्मनः। दृष्टपूर्वो मया वीर चरन्त्या पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥०४-३४-१३॥
dhanuṣyanavaraś cāsīt tasya śiṣyo mahātmanaḥ। dṛṣṭapūrvo mayā vīra carantyā pāṇḍavānprati॥04-34-13॥

येयं कुमारी सुश्रोणी भगिनी ते यवीयसी। अस्याः स वचनं वीर करिष्यति न संशयः ॥०४-३४-१६॥
yeyam kumārī suśroṇī bhaginī te yavīyasī। asyāḥ sa vacanaṃ vīra kariṣyati na saṃśayaḥ॥04-34-16॥

This beautiful-hipped maiden, your younger sister—whatever she says, the hero will surely do, there is no doubt. (04-34-16)
यदि वै सारथिः स स्यात्कुरून्सर्वानसंशयम्। जित्वा गाश्च समादाय ध्रुवमागमनं भवेत् ॥०४-३४-१७॥
yadi vai sārathiḥ sa syāt kurūn sarvān asaṃśayam। jitvā gāś ca samādāya dhruvam āgamanaṃ bhavet॥04-34-17॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer; स (sa) - he; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus (Kurus, a people/tribe); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; समादाय (samādāya) - having taken (with him); ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - return; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(If indeed that charioteer were (present), the Kurus all, without doubt, having conquered and having taken the cows, certainly return would be.)
If indeed he were the charioteer, without doubt he would defeat all the Kurus, recover the cows, and certainly return. (04-34-17)
एवमुक्तः स सैरन्ध्र्या भगिनीं प्रत्यभाषत। गच्छ त्वमनवद्याङ्गि तामानय बृहन्नडाम् ॥०४-३४-१८॥
evam-uktaḥ sa sairandhryā bhaginīṁ pratyabhāṣata। gaccha tvam-anavadyāṅgi tām-ānaya bṛhannadām ॥04-34-18॥
