उत्तर उवाच॥
Uttara said.
अद्याहमनुगच्छेयं दृढधन्वा गवां पदम्। यदि मे सारथिः कश्चिद्भवेदश्वेषु कोविदः ॥०४-३४-१॥
Today I could follow the track of Dṛḍhadhanvā’s cows, if only I had a charioteer skilled with horses. (04-34-1)
तमेव नाधिगच्छामि यो मे यन्ता भवेन्नरः। पश्यध्वं सारथिं क्षिप्रं मम युक्तं प्रयास्यतः ॥०४-३४-२॥
I do not find a man who would serve as my charioteer; look, all of you, at my charioteer who has quickly yoked my chariot and is about to depart. (04-34-2)
अष्टाविंशतिरात्रं वा मासं वा नूनमन्ततः। यत्तदासीन्महद्युद्धं तत्र मे सारथिर्हतः ॥०४-३४-३॥
For twenty-eight nights, or for a month, or at least by the end, during that great battle, my charioteer was killed there. (04-34-3)
स लभेयं यदि त्वन्यं हययानविदं नरम्। त्वरावानद्य यात्वाहं समुच्छ्रितमहाध्वजम् ॥०४-३४-४॥
If I should obtain another man not skilled in driving the chariot instead of you, I—being swift—will go today with the greatly raised banner. (04-34-4)
विगाह्य तत्परानीकं गजवाजिरथाकुलम्। शस्त्रप्रतापनिर्वीर्यान्कुरूञ्जित्वानये पशून् ॥०४-३४-५॥
Enter that hostile army crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots; having conquered the Kurus whose valor was broken by the power of arms, bring back the cattle. (04-34-5)
दुर्योधनं शान्तनवं कर्णं वैकर्तनं कृपम्। द्रोणं च सह पुत्रेण महेष्वासान्समागतान् ॥०४-३४-६॥
Duryodhana, Bhīṣma (the son of Śantanu), Karṇa (the son of Vikartana), Kṛpa, Droṇa along with his son, and the great archers assembled there. (04-34-6)
वित्रासयित्वा सङ्ग्रामे दानवानिव वज्रभृत्। अनेनैव मुहूर्तेन पुनः प्रत्यानये पशून् ॥०४-३४-७॥
Just as Indra, the bearer of the thunderbolt, terrifies the Dānavas in battle, so, having caused terror, I will bring back the cattle again within this very moment. (04-34-7)
शून्यमासाद्य कुरवः प्रयान्त्यादाय गोधनम्। किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यदहं तत्र नाभवम् ॥०४-३४-८॥
The Kurus, having found it empty, take away the cattle-wealth and go. What could I possibly do since I was not there? (04-34-8)
पश्येयुरद्य मे वीर्यं कुरवस्ते समागताः। किं नु पार्थोऽर्जुनः साक्षादयमस्मान्प्रबाधते ॥०४-३४-९॥
Let those assembled Kurus witness my power today. How is it that this Pārtha, Arjuna, is overpowering us directly? (04-34-9)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
तस्य तद्वचनं स्त्रीषु भाषतः स्म पुनः पुनः। नामर्षयत पाञ्चाली बीभत्सोः परिकीर्तनम् ॥०४-३४-१०॥
Panchali did not tolerate the repeated mention of Bibhatsu (Arjuna) by him as he spoke those words among the women. (04-34-10)
अथैनमुपसङ्गम्य स्त्रीमध्यात्सा तपस्विनी। व्रीडमानेव शनकैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०४-३४-११॥
Then the ascetic woman, as if bashful, slowly approached him from among the women and spoke these words. (04-34-11)
योऽसौ बृहद्वारणाभो युवा सुप्रियदर्शनः। बृहन्नडेति विख्यातः पार्थस्यासीत्स सारथिः ॥०४-३४-१२॥
That one who is like a great elephant, a young man of pleasing appearance, who is known as Bṛhannaḍa, was the charioteer of Pārtha (Arjuna). (04-34-12)
धनुष्यनवरश्चासीत्तस्य शिष्यो महात्मनः। दृष्टपूर्वो मया वीर चरन्त्या पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥०४-३४-१३॥
He was newly skilled in archery, and a disciple of that great-souled one. I have seen him before, O hero, while wandering towards the Pāṇḍavas. (04-34-13)
यदा तत्पावको दावमदहत्खाण्डवं महत्। अर्जुनस्य तदानेन सङ्गृहीता हयोत्तमाः ॥०४-३४-१४॥
When that fire burned the great Khāṇḍava forest, at that time the excellent horses of Arjuna were gathered by him. (04-34-14)
तेन सारथिना पार्थः सर्वभूतानि सर्वशः। अजयत्खाण्डवप्रस्थे न हि यन्तास्ति तादृशः ॥०४-३४-१५॥
With that charioteer, Pārtha overcame all creatures completely at Khāṇḍavaprastha. Truly, there is no charioteer like him. (04-34-15)
येयं कुमारी सुश्रोणी भगिनी ते यवीयसी। अस्याः स वचनं वीर करिष्यति न संशयः ॥०४-३४-१६॥
This beautiful-hipped maiden, your younger sister—whatever she says, the hero will surely do, there is no doubt. (04-34-16)
यदि वै सारथिः स स्यात्कुरून्सर्वानसंशयम्। जित्वा गाश्च समादाय ध्रुवमागमनं भवेत् ॥०४-३४-१७॥
If indeed he were the charioteer, without doubt he would defeat all the Kurus, recover the cows, and certainly return. (04-34-17)
एवमुक्तः स सैरन्ध्र्या भगिनीं प्रत्यभाषत। गच्छ त्वमनवद्याङ्गि तामानय बृहन्नडाम् ॥०४-३४-१८॥
Thus spoken to by Sairandhrī, he replied to his sister: "Go, O faultless-limbed one, bring Bṛhannadā." (04-34-18)
सा भ्रात्रा प्रेषिता शीघ्रमगच्छन्नर्तनागृहम्। यत्रास्ते स महाबाहुश्छन्नः सत्रेण पाण्डवः ॥०४-३४-१९॥
She, having been sent quickly by her brother, went to the dancing hall where the mighty-armed Pāṇḍava, concealed by his vow, was staying. (04-34-19)
