स राजधान्या निर्याय वैराटिः पृथिवीञ्जयः। प्रयाहीत्यब्रवीत्सूतं यत्र ते कुरवो गताः ॥०४-३६-१॥
sa rājadhānyā niryāya vairāṭiḥ pṛthivīñjayaḥ। prayāhītyabravītsūtaṃ yatra te kuravo gatāḥ ॥04-36-1॥
[स (sa) - he; राजधान्या (rājadhānyā) - from the capital city; निर्याय (niryāya) - having departed; वैराटिः (vairāṭiḥ) - the king of Virāṭa; पृथिवीञ् (pṛthivīñ) - kings; जयः (jayaḥ) - conqueror; प्रयाहि (prayāhi) - go forth; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke; सूतम् (sūtam) - to the charioteer; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - those; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kauravas; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone;]
(He, having departed from the capital city, the king of Virāṭa, conqueror of kings, said to the charioteer, "Go forth where those Kauravas have gone." (04-36-1))
Having left the capital city, the king of Virāṭa, conqueror of kings, told the charioteer, "Go where those Kauravas have gone." (04-36-1)
समवेतान्कुरून्यावज्जिगीषूनवजित्य वै। गाश्चैषां क्षिप्रमादाय पुनरायामि स्वं पुरम् ॥०४-३६-२॥
samavetān kurūn yāvat jigīṣūn avajitya vai। gāś ca eṣām kṣipram ādāya punar āyāmi svaṃ puram ॥04-36-2॥
[समवेतान् (samavetān) - assembled; कुरून् (kurūn) - Kurus; यावद् (yāvat) - until; जिगीषून् (jigīṣūn) - those desiring to conquer; अवजित्य (avajitya) - having conquered; वै (vai) - indeed; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - their; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; पुनः (punar) - again; आयामि (āyāmi) - I return; स्वम् (svam) - own; पुरम् (puram) - city;]
(Having conquered indeed the assembled Kurus who desired to conquer, and quickly having taken their cows, again I return to my own city.)
I will conquer the assembled Kurus who wish to win, take their cows swiftly, and then return again to my own city. (04-36-2)
ततस्तांश्चोदयामास सदश्वान्पाण्डुनन्दनः। ते हया नरसिंहेन चोदिता वातरंहसः ॥ आलिखन्त इवाकाशमूहुः काञ्चनमालिनः ॥०४-३६-३॥
tatastāṁś codayāmāsa sadaśvān pāṇḍunandanaḥ। te hayā narasiṁhena coditā vātaraṁhasaḥ॥ ālikhanta iva ākāśam ūhuḥ kāñcanamālinaḥ॥ 04-36-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तान् (tān) - them; चोदयामास (codayāmāsa) - urged on; सदश्वान् (sadaśvān) - the excellent horses; पाण्डुनन्दनः (pāṇḍunandanaḥ) - descendant of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna); ते (te) - they; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; नरसिंहेन (narasiṁhena) - by the lion among men; चोदिताः (coditāḥ) - being urged; वातरंहसः (vātaraṁhasaḥ) - as fast as the wind; आलिखन्तः (ālikhantaḥ) - tracing (as if drawing); इव (iva) - as if; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - the sky; ऊहुः (ūhuḥ) - carried (went); काञ्चनमालिनः (kāñcanamālinaḥ) - adorned with gold garlands;]
(Then the descendant of Pāṇḍu urged on the excellent horses; those horses, urged by the lion among men, as fast as the wind, as if tracing the sky, adorned with gold garlands, went on.)
Then the son of Pāṇḍu urged on the fine horses; those horses, spurred by the lion among men, sped like the wind, as if tracing paths through the sky, adorned with golden garlands. (04-36-3)
नातिदूरमथो यात्वा मत्स्यपुत्रधनञ्जयौ। अवेक्षेताममित्रघ्नौ कुरूणां बलिनां बलम् ॥ श्मशानमभितो गत्वा आससाद कुरूनथ ॥०४-३६-४॥
nātidūramatho yātvā matsyaputradhanañjayau। avekṣetāmamitraghnau kurūṇāṃ balināṃ balam ॥ śmaśānamabhito gatvā āsasāda kurūnatha ॥04-36-4॥
[नातिदूरम् (nātidūram) - not-too-far; अथ (atha) - then; उ (u) - indeed; यात्वा (yātvā) - having gone; मत्स्यपुत्रधनञ्जयौ (matsyaputra-dhanañjayau) - Matsya's son and Dhananjaya; अवेक्षेताम् (avekṣetām) - should observe; अमित्रघ्नौ (amitraghnau) - destroyers of foes; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the mighty; बलम् (balam) - strength; श्मशानम् (śmaśānam) - cremation ground; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - near; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; आससाद (āsasāda) - reached; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; अथ (atha) - then;]
(Not too far, then indeed having gone, Matsya's son and Dhananjaya, should observe, destroyers of foes, of the Kurus, of the mighty, strength. The cremation ground near having gone, (he) reached the Kurus then.)
After proceeding not too far, the son of Matsya and Dhananjaya, both destroyers of foes, should observe the strength of the mighty Kurus. Having gone near the cremation ground, then he reached the Kurus. (04-36-4)
तदनीकं महत्तेषां विबभौ सागरस्वनम्। सर्पमाणमिवाकाशे वनं बहुलपादपम् ॥०४-३६-५॥
tadanīkaṃ mahatteṣāṃ vibabhau sāgarasvanam। sarpamāṇam ivākāśe vanaṃ bahulapādapam॥04-36-5॥
[तदनीकं (tadanīkaṃ) - that army; महत् (mahat) - great; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; विबभौ (vibabhau) - shone; सागरस्वनम् (sāgarasvanam) - ocean-sound; सर्पमाणम् (sarpamāṇam) - moving; इव (iva) - like; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; वनम् (vanam) - forest; बहुलपादपम् (bahulapādapam) - abundant with trees;]
(That army, great of them, shone with the sound of the ocean; moving as if in the sky the forest abundant with trees.)
That great army of theirs, resounding like the ocean, shone as it moved like a forest thick with trees in the sky. (04-36-5)
ददृशे पार्थिवो रेणुर्जनितस्तेन सर्पता। दृष्टिप्रणाशो भूतानां दिवस्पृङ्नरसत्तम ॥०४-३६-६॥
dadṛśe pārthivo reṇur janitas tena sarpatā। dṛṣṭipraṇāśo bhūtānāṃ divaspṛṅ narasattama ॥04-36-6॥
[ददृशे (dadṛśe) - was seen; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - earthly; रेणुः (reṇuḥ) - dust; जनितः (janitaḥ) - produced; तेन (tena) - by him; सर्पता (sarpatā) - by moving; दृष्टिप्रणाशः (dṛṣṭipraṇāśaḥ) - destruction of sight; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; दिवःस्पृक् (divaspṛk) - touching the sky; नरसत्तम (narasattama) - O best of men;]
(The earthly dust produced by him moving was seen, destruction of sight of beings, touching the sky, O best of men.)
O best of men, the earthly dust raised by his moving could be seen, causing blindness to beings and reaching up to the sky. (04-36-6)
तदनीकं महद्दृष्ट्वा गजाश्वरथसङ्कुलम्। कर्णदुर्योधनकृपैर्गुप्तं शान्तनवेन च ॥०४-३६-७॥
tadanīkaṃ mahad dṛṣṭvā gajāśvarathasaṅkulam। karṇa-duryodhana-kṛpair-guptaṃ śāntanavena ca ॥04-36-7॥
[तदनीकं (tadanīkam) - that army formation; महत् (mahat) - great; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गज-अश्व-रथ-सङ्कुलम् (gaja-aśva-ratha-saṅkulam) - crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots; कर्ण-दुर्योधन-कृपैः (karṇa-duryodhana-kṛpaiḥ) - by Karṇa, Duryodhana, and Kṛpa; गुप्तम् (guptam) - protected; शान्तनवेन (śāntanavena) - by the son of Śāntanu; च (ca) - and;]
(Having seen that great army formation crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, protected by Karṇa, Duryodhana, Kṛpa, and also by the son of Śāntanu.)
He saw that great army formation, crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, protected by Karṇa, Duryodhana, Kṛpa, and by the son of Śāntanu as well. (04-36-7)
द्रोणेन च सपुत्रेण महेष्वासेन धीमता। हृष्टरोमा भयोद्विग्नः पार्थं वैराटिरब्रवीत् ॥०४-३६-८॥
droṇena ca saputreṇa maheṣvāsena dhīmatā। hṛṣṭaromā bhayodvignaḥ pārthaṃ vairāṭir abravīt ॥04-36-8॥
[द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; च (ca) - and; सपुत्रेण (saputreṇa) - with his son; महेष्वासेन (maheṣvāsena) - by the great archer; धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the wise; हृष्टरोमा (hṛṣṭaromā) - Hṛṣṭaromā; भयोद्विग्नः (bhayodvignaḥ) - agitated by fear; पार्थं (pārthaṃ) - to Pārtha; वैराटि (vairāṭi) - the king of Virāṭa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(By Droṇa and with his son, by the great archer, by the wise (one), Hṛṣṭaromā, agitated by fear, to Pārtha, the king of Virāṭa said.)
Hṛṣṭaromā, agitated by fear at Droṇa, his son, the great and wise archer, spoke to Pārtha on behalf of the king of Virāṭa. (04-36-8)
नोत्सहे कुरुभिर्योद्धुं रोमहर्षं हि पश्य मे। बहुप्रवीरमत्युग्रं देवैरपि दुरासदम् ॥ प्रतियोद्धुं न शक्ष्यामि कुरुसैन्यमनन्तकम् ॥०४-३६-९॥
notsahe kurubhir yoddhuṃ romaharṣaṃ hi paśya me। bahu-pravīram atyugraṃ devair api durāsadam॥ pratiyoddhuṃ na śakṣyāmi kuru-sainyam anantakam॥04-36-9॥
[नोत्सहे (notsahe) - I am not able; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kurus; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; रोमहर्षम् (romaharṣam) - hair-raising; हि (hi) - indeed; पश्य (paśya) - see; मे (me) - my; बहुप्रवीरम् (bahu-pravīram) - with many heroes; अत्युग्रम् (atyugram) - very fierce; देवैः (devaiḥ) - even by the gods; अपि (api) - even; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - difficult to assault; प्रतियोद्धुम् (pratiyoddhum) - to oppose in battle; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I shall be able; कुरुसैन्यम् (kuru-sainyam) - Kuru army; अनन्तकम् (anantakam) - boundless (in strength or size);]
(I am not able to fight with the Kurus; indeed, see my hair-raising (condition). With many heroes, very fierce, even by the gods difficult to assault, to oppose in battle I shall not be able—the Kuru army, boundless.)
I am not able to fight with the Kurus; indeed, see my hair standing on end. The Kuru army, with many heroes and exceedingly fierce—difficult even for the gods to contend with—I shall not be able to oppose in battle. (04-36-9)
नाशंसे भारतीं सेनां प्रवेष्टुं भीमकार्मुकाम्। रथनागाश्वकलिलां पत्तिध्वजसमाकुलाम् ॥ दृष्ट्वैव हि परानाजावात्मा प्रव्यथतीव मे ॥०४-३६-१०॥
nāśaṁse bhāratīṁ senāṁ praveṣṭuṁ bhīmākārmukām. rathanāgāśvakalilāṁ pattidhvajasamākulām ॥ dṛṣṭvaiva hi parānājāvātmā pravyathatīva me ॥04-36-10॥
[न (na) - not; शंसे (śaṁse) - I expect; I hope; भारतीं (bhāratīm) - of the Bhāratas; सेनां (senām) - army; प्रवेष्टुं (praveṣṭum) - to enter; भीमकार्मुकाम् (bhīmākārmukām) - terrible with bows; रथनागाश्वकलिलां (rathanāgāśvakalilām) - filled with chariots, elephants, and horses; पत्तिध्वजसमाकुलाम् (pattidhvajasamākulām) - crowded with foot-soldiers and banners; दृष्ट्वैव (dṛṣṭvaiva) - on seeing (just after seeing); हि (hi) - indeed; परान् (parān) - the foes; आजौ (ājau) - in battle; आत्मा (ātmā) - the mind (spirit); प्रव्यथतीव (pravyathatīva) - as if deeply agitated; मे (me) - my;]
(Not I hope to enter the Bhārata army, terrible with bows, filled with chariots, elephants, and horses, crowded with foot-soldiers and banners. Indeed, on seeing the foes in battle, my mind as if is deeply agitated.)
I have no hope of entering the Bhārata army, terrible with bows, packed with chariots, elephants, and horses, crowded with foot-soldiers and banners. Indeed, just seeing the enemy in battle, my mind feels deeply disturbed. (4-36-10)
यत्र द्रोणश्च भीष्मश्च कृपः कर्णो विविंशतिः। अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सोमदत्तोऽथ बाह्लिकः ॥०४-३६-११॥
yatra droṇaś ca bhīṣmaś ca kṛpaḥ karṇo viviṃśatiḥ| aśvatthāmā vikarṇaś ca somadatto'tha bāhlikaḥ ॥04-36-11॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; च (ca) - and; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; च (ca) - and; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; विविंशतिः (viviṃśatiḥ) - Viviṃśati; अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāman; विकर्णः (vikarṇaḥ) - Vikarṇa; च (ca) - and; सोमदत्तः (somadattaḥ) - Somadatta; अथ (atha) - and then; बाह्लिकः (bāhlikaḥ) - Bāhlika;]
(Where Droṇa and Bhīṣma and Kṛpa, Karṇa, Viviṃśati, Aśvatthāman, Vikarṇa and Somadatta, and then Bāhlika.)
Where Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Viviṃśati, Aśvatthāman, Vikarṇa, Somadatta, and also Bāhlika (are present). (04-36-11)
दुर्योधनस्तथा वीरो राजा च रथिनां वरः। द्युतिमन्तो महेष्वासाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥०४-३६-१२॥
duryodhanas tathā vīro rājā ca rathināṃ varaḥ। dyutimanto maheṣvāsāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ ॥04-36-12॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; (son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; proper noun;) तथा (tathā) - in the same way; likewise; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; brave man; राजा (rājā) - king; च (ca) - and; रथिनां (rathināṃ) - of chariot-warriors; वरः (varaḥ) - foremost; best; द्युतिमन्तः (dyutimantaḥ) - resplendent; shining; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great bowmen; सर्वे (sarve) - all; युद्धविशारदाः (yuddhaviśāradāḥ) - skilled in battle;]
(Duryodhana likewise hero, king and of chariot-warriors foremost; resplendent great bowmen all skilled in battle.)
Duryodhana, likewise a hero, a king and the best among chariot-warriors, and all the resplendent, great bowmen are skilled in battle. (04-36-12)
दृष्ट्वैव हि कुरूनेतान्व्यूढानीकान्प्रहारिणः। हृषितानि च रोमाणि कश्मलं चागतं मम ॥०४-३६-१३॥
dṛṣṭvaiva hi kurūnetān vyūḍhānīkān prahāriṇaḥ। hṛṣitāni ca romāṇi kaśmalaṃ cāgataṃ mama॥04-36-13॥
[दृष्ट्वैव (dṛṣṭvaiva) - having just seen; हि (hi) - indeed; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; एतान् (etān) - these; व्यूढानीकान् (vyūḍhānīkān) - with drawn-up troops; प्रहारिणः (prahāriṇaḥ) - about to strike; हृषितानि (hṛṣitāni) - erect; च (ca) - and; रोमाणि (romāṇi) - hairs; कश्मलम् (kaśmalam) - faintness; च (ca) - and; आगतम् (āgatam) - has come; मम (mama) - to me;]
(Having just seen indeed these Kurus with their troops drawn up, about to strike, and my hairs stood on end and faintness has come to me.)
As soon as I saw these Kurus arrayed for battle and ready to strike, my hairs stood on end and a weakness came upon me. (04-36-13)

Vaiśampāyana said.
अवियातो वियातस्य मौर्ख्याद्धूर्तस्य पश्यतः। परिदेवयते मन्दः सकाशे सव्यसाचिनः ॥०४-३६-१४॥
aviyāto viyātasya maurkhyāddhūrtasya paśyataḥ। paridevayate mandaḥ sakāśe savyasācinaḥ ॥04-36-14॥
[अवियातो (aviyātaḥ) - not cautious; वियातस्य (viyātasya) - of the careless; मौर्ख्यात् (maurkhyāt) - from foolishness; धूर्तस्य (dhūrtasya) - of the rogue; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - (while) seeing; परिदेवयते (paridevayate) - laments; मन्दः (mandaḥ) - the foolish person; सकाशे (sakāśe) - in the presence; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Not cautious of the careless, from the foolishness of the rogue, while seeing, a foolish person laments in the presence of Savyasācin.)
Out of his own foolishness and carelessness regarding a rogue, the foolish man laments before Savyasācin (Arjuna), even while seeing what is happening. (04-36-14)
त्रिगर्तान्मे पिता यातः शून्ये सम्प्रणिधाय माम्। सर्वां सेनामुपादाय न मे सन्तीह सैनिकाः ॥०४-३६-१५॥
trigartān me pitā yātaḥ śūnye sampraṇidhāya mām। sarvāṁ senām upādāya na me santīha sainikāḥ॥04-36-15॥
[त्रिगर्तात् (trigartāt) - from Trigarta; मे (me) - my; पिता (pitā) - father; यातः (yātaḥ) - has gone; शून्ये (śūnye) - to the empty place; सम्प्रणिधाय (sampraṇidhāya) - having deposited; माम् (mām) - me; सर्वाम् (sarvām) - all; सेनाम् (senām) - army; उपादाय (upādāya) - taking along; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; सन्ति (santi) - (they) are; इह (iha) - here; सैनिकाः (sainikāḥ) - soldiers;]
(From Trigarta my father has gone, having deposited me in the empty place, taking along all the army; not my soldiers are here.)
My father has gone from Trigarta, having left me alone in this empty place, taking all the army with him; there are no soldiers of mine here. (04-36-15)
सोऽहमेको बहून्बालः कृतास्त्रानकृतश्रमः। प्रतियोद्धुं न शक्ष्यामि निवर्तस्व बृहन्नडे ॥०४-३६-१६॥
so'ham-eko bahūn-bālaḥ kṛtāstrān-akṛtaśramaḥ। pratiyoddhuṃ na śakṣyāmi nivartasva bṛhannade ॥04-36-16॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; एको (ekaḥ) - alone; बहून् (bahūn) - many; बालः (bālaḥ) - young man; कृतास्त्रान् (kṛtāstrān) - having weapons prepared; अकृतश्रमः (akṛtaśramaḥ) - not exerted; प्रतियोद्धुम् (pratiyoddhum) - to fight against; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - shall be able; निवर्तस्व (nivartasva) - turn back; बृहन्यडे (bṛhannade) - O Bṛhannadā;]
(He, I alone many young having weapons prepared, not exerted, to fight against not shall be able, turn back, O Bṛhannadā.)
He—I am alone, a young man, facing many who are armed and not yet wearied; I shall not be able to fight them. Turn back, O Bṛhannadā. (04-36-16)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

Arjuna said.
भयेन दीनरूपोऽसि द्विषतां हर्षवर्धनः। न च तावत्कृतं किञ्चित्परैः कर्म रणाजिरे ॥०४-३६-१७॥
bhayena dīnarūpo'si dviṣatāṃ harṣavardhanaḥ। na ca tāvatkṛtaṃ kiñcitparaiḥ karma raṇājire ॥04-36-17॥
[भयेन (bhayena) - by fear; दीनरूपः (dīnarūpaḥ) - of pitiable appearance; असि (asi) - you are; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of enemies; हर्षवर्धनः (harṣavardhanaḥ) - increaser of joy; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; कर्म (karma) - deed; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - in the battlefield;]
(By fear (you are) of pitiable appearance, (but you are) the increaser of the joy of enemies. And not so much as anything has been done by others, a deed, in the battlefield.)
Through fear you appear pitiable, and you bring joy to your enemies. Yet, nothing at all has been done by others in the battlefield. (4-36-17)
स्वयमेव च मामात्थ वह मां कौरवान्प्रति। सोऽहं त्वां तत्र नेष्यामि यत्रैते बहुला ध्वजाः ॥०४-३६-१८॥
svayameva ca mām āttha vaha māṃ kauravān prati। so'haṃ tvāṃ tatra neṣyāmi yatraite bahulā dhvajāḥ ॥04-36-18॥
[स्वयमेव (svayameva) - by oneself indeed; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; आत्थ (āttha) - you said; वह (vaha) - carry; माम् (mām) - me; कौरवान् (kauravān) - to the Kauravas; प्रति (prati) - towards; सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; तत्र (tatra) - there; नेष्यामि (neṣyāmi) - shall lead; यत्र (yatra) - where; एते (ete) - these; बहुलाः (bahulāḥ) - numerous; ध्वजाः (dhvajāḥ) - standards;]
(By yourself indeed and me you said, carry me towards the Kauravas. He I am, you there shall lead where these numerous standards.)
You yourself told me, 'Carry me to the Kauravas.' So I will lead you there, where these numerous standards are. (04-36-18)
मध्यमामिषगृध्राणां कुरूणामाततायिनाम्। नेष्यामि त्वां महाबाहो पृथिव्यामपि युध्यताम् ॥०४-३६-१९॥
madhyamāmiṣagṛdhrāṇāṃ kurūṇām ātatāyinām। neṣyāmi tvāṃ mahābāho pṛthivyām api yudhyatām॥04-36-19॥
[मध्यम (madhyama) - middle; of the middle; of the mediocre; आमिषगृध्राणाम् (āmiṣagṛdhrāṇām) - of those greedy for flesh; of the meat-covetous; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; आततायिनाम् (ātatāyinām) - of the offenders; of the aggressors; नेष्यामि (neṣyāmi) - I shall carry; I shall take; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; अपि (api) - even; also; युध्यताम् (yudhyatām) - of those fighting; among those fighting;]
(Of the middle, flesh-greedy Kurus, offenders, I shall carry you, O mighty-armed, even on the earth among those fighting.)
O mighty-armed one, I shall take you even among those fighting, to the midst of the Kurus—those offenders greedy for flesh—upon the earth. (04-36-19)
तथा स्त्रीषु प्रतिश्रुत्य पौरुषं पुरुषेषु च। कत्थमानोऽभिनिर्याय किमर्थं न युयुत्ससे ॥०४-३६-२०॥
tathā strīṣu pratiśrutya pauruṣaṃ puruṣeṣu ca। katthamāno'bhiniryāya kimarthaṃ na yuyutsase॥04-36-20॥

(Thus, having promised manliness among women and among men, boasting, having gone forth, for what reason do you not wish to fight?)
Having thus promised manliness among women and among men, and having boasted as you went forth, for what reason do you now not wish to fight? (04-36-20)
न चेद्विजित्य गास्तास्त्वं गृहान्वै प्रतियास्यसि। प्रहसिष्यन्ति वीर त्वां नरा नार्यश्च सङ्गताः ॥०४-३६-२१॥
na ced vijitya gās tāstvaṃ gṛhān vai pratiyāsyasi। prahasiṣyanti vīra tvāṃ narā nāryaś ca saṃgatāḥ॥04-36-21॥

(If not, having conquered those cows, you indeed will return to the houses, O hero, the men and women assembled will laugh at you.)
O hero, if you do not return to the houses having conquered those cows, the assembled men and women will laugh at you. (04-36-21)
अहमप्यत्र सैरन्ध्र्या स्तुतः सारथ्यकर्मणि। न हि शक्ष्याम्यनिर्जित्य गाः प्रयातुं पुरं प्रति ॥०४-३६-२२॥
aham apy atra sairaṃdhr-yā stutaḥ sārathyakarmaṇi। na hi śakṣyāmi anirjitya gāḥ prayātuṃ puraṃ prati॥04-36-22॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; अत्र (atra) - here; सैरन्ध्र्या (sairaṃdhr-yā) - by Sairandhri; स्तुतः (stutaḥ) - praised; सारथ्यकर्मणि (sārathyakarmaṇi) - in the charioteer's task; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I shall be able; अनिर्जित्य (anirjitya) - without conquering; गाः (gāḥ) - the cows; प्रयातुम् (prayātum) - to go; पुरम् (puram) - to the city; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(I also here by Sairandhri praised in the charioteer's task; not indeed I shall be able without conquering the cows to go towards the city.)
Here, I too have been praised by Sairandhri for my charioteer's task. But I surely cannot go towards the city without first recovering the cows. (04-36-22)
स्तोत्रेण चैव सैरन्ध्र्यास्तव वाक्येन तेन च। कथं न युध्येयमहं कुरून्सर्वान्स्थिरो भव ॥०४-३६-२३॥

(By the hymn and indeed by the statement of Sairandhri, by your words and by that too, how should I not fight all the Kurus, I, being firm, be.)
Owing to the hymn, Sairandhri's statement, your words and that too, how could I not fight all the Kurus — I shall be firm. (04-36-23)

After speaking thus, Kaunteya leapt down from the excellent chariot and Dhanañjaya chased the prince as he ran, his long braid shaking and his garments brightly red. (4-36-27)
विधूय वेणीं धावन्तमजानन्तोऽर्जुनं तदा। सैनिकाः प्राहसन्केचित्तथारूपमवेक्ष्य तम् ॥०४-३६-२८॥
vidhūya veṇīṃ dhāvantam ajānantaḥ arjunam tadā। sainikāḥ prāhasan kecit tathā-rūpam avekṣya tam॥04-36-28॥

Then, not recognizing Arjuna, some soldiers laughed on seeing him running with his braid loosened in such a manner. (04-36-28)
तं शीघ्रमभिधावन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य कुरवोऽब्रुवन्। क एष वेषप्रच्छन्नो भस्मनेव हुताशनः ॥०४-३६-२९॥

किञ्चिदस्य यथा पुंसः किञ्चिदस्य यथा स्त्रियः। सारूप्यमर्जुनस्येव क्लीबरूपं बिभर्ति च ॥०४-३६-३०॥

It bears a form that is somewhat like that of a man and somewhat like that of a woman, resembling Arjuna, and also has a neuter aspect. (04-36-30)
तदेवैतच्छिरोग्रीवं तौ बाहू परिघोपमौ। तद्वदेवास्य विक्रान्तं नायमन्यो धनञ्जयात् ॥०४-३६-३१॥
tadevaitacchirogrīvaṁ tau bāhū parighopamau। tadvadevāsya vikrāntaṁ nāyamanyo dhanañjayāt॥04-36-31॥
[तत् एव एतत् (tat eva etat) - this indeed this; शिरः ग्रीवं (śiraḥ grīvam) - head (śiras) neck (grīva); तौ बाहू (tau bāhū) - those two arms; परिघ-उपमौ (parigha-upamau) - like (upamau) iron clubs (parigha); तत् वत् एव (tat vat eva) - in the same manner indeed; अस्य विक्रान्तम् (asya vikrāntam) - his valor (vikrānta); न (na) - not; अयम् अन्यः धनञ्जयात् (ayam anyaḥ dhanañjayāt) - this one (person) (ayam anyaḥ) than Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(This indeed is this head and neck, those two arms like iron clubs, in the same manner indeed his valor; not is this other (person) than Dhananjaya.)
This is indeed that head and neck, those two arms are like iron clubs; in just the same way, his valor—this is none other than Dhananjaya (Arjuna). (04-36-31)
अमरेष्विव देवेन्द्रो मानुषेषु धनञ्जयः। एकः कोऽस्मानुपायायादन्यो लोके धनञ्जयात् ॥०४-३६-३२॥
amareṣviva devendro mānuṣeṣu dhanañjayaḥ। ekaḥ ko'smānupāyāyādanyo loke dhanañjayāt ॥04-36-32॥
[अमरेषु (amareṣu) - among immortals; इव (iva) - like; देवेन्द्रः (devendraḥ) - Indra, king of gods; मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among humans; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); एकः (ekaḥ) - one; कः (kaḥ) - who; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; उपायायात् (upāyāyāt) - for accomplishment, for means; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; लोके (loke) - in the world; धनञ्जयात् (dhanañjayāt) - than Dhanañjaya;]
(Among immortals like Indra, among humans Dhanañjaya; one, who for us for accomplishment, another in the world than Dhanañjaya?)
Just as Indra is among the immortals, so is Dhanañjaya among humans; who else in the world is there besides Dhanañjaya for accomplishing our purpose? (04-36-32)
एकः पुत्रो विराटस्य शून्ये संनिहितः पुरे। स एष किल निर्यातो बालभावान्न पौरुषात् ॥०४-३६-३३॥
ekaḥ putro virāṭasya śūnye saṁnihitaḥ pure. sa eṣa kila niryāto bālabhāvān na pauruṣāt ॥04-36-33॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; शून्ये (śūnye) - in emptiness; संनिहितः (saṁnihitaḥ) - present; पुरे (pure) - in the city; सः (saḥ) - he; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; किल (kila) - indeed; निर्यातः (niryātaḥ) - departed; बालभावात् (bālabhāvāt) - from childishness; न (na) - not; पौरुषात् (pauruṣāt) - from manliness;]
(One son of Virāṭa, in emptiness, present in the city. He, this indeed, departed from childishness, not from manliness.)
One son of Virāṭa, present in the deserted city—this is he, who left due to childishness, not out of manliness. (04-36-33)
सत्रेण नूनं छन्नं हि चरन्तं पार्थमर्जुनम्। उत्तरः सारथिं कृत्वा निर्यातो नगराद्बहिः ॥०४-३६-३४॥
satreṇa nūnaṃ channaṃ hi carantaṃ pārtham arjunam। uttaraḥ sārathiṃ kṛtvā niryāto nagarād bahiḥ॥04-36-34॥

(By covering, surely, hidden indeed, moving about, Pārtha Arjuna, Uttara, charioteer having made, has departed from the city outside.)
Surely, Uttara, making Pārtha Arjuna—who is concealed and moving about under cover—his charioteer, has gone outside the city. (04-36-34)
स नो मन्ये ध्वजान्दृष्ट्वा भीत एष पलायति। तं नूनमेष धावन्तं जिघृक्षति धनञ्जयः ॥०४-३६-३५॥
sa no manye dhvajān dṛṣṭvā bhīta eṣa palāyati. taṁ nūnam eṣa dhāvantaṁ jighṛkṣati dhanañjayaḥ ॥04-36-35॥
[स (sa) - he; नः (naḥ) - us; मन्ये (manye) - I think; ध्वजान् (dhvajān) - banners; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); पलायति (palāyati) - flees; तम् (tam) - him; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); धावन्तम् (dhāvantam) - running; जिघृक्षति (jighṛkṣati) - wishes to seize; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna);]
(He, I think, having seen our banners, afraid, this (one) flees. Him, surely, this (one) running, Dhanañjaya wishes to seize.)
I think he, frightened after seeing our banners, is fleeing. Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) certainly wishes to catch that one who is running. (04-36-35)
इति स्म कुरवः सर्वे विमृशन्तः पृथक्पृथक्। न च व्यवसितुं किञ्चिदुत्तरं शक्नुवन्ति ते ॥ छन्नं तथा तं सत्रेण पाण्डवं प्रेक्ष्य भारत ॥०४-३६-३६॥
iti sma kuravaḥ sarve vimṛśantaḥ pṛthak-pṛthak। na ca vyavasituṃ kiñcid uttaraṃ śaknuvanti te॥ channaṃ tathā taṃ satreṇa pāṇḍavaṃ prekṣya bhārata॥ 04-36-36॥

(Thus indeed, all the Kurus, deliberating individually, and not able to decide anything as an answer, having seen that Pāṇḍava thus hidden by the assembly, O Bhārata.)
Thus, all the Kurus, though each deliberated separately, were unable to reach any decision in reply, having seen the Pāṇḍava hidden by the assembly in this way, O Bhārata. (04-36-36)
उत्तरं तु प्रधावन्तमनुद्रुत्य धनञ्जयः। गत्वा पदशतं तूर्णं केशपक्षे परामृशत् ॥०४-३६-३७॥

(But having pursued the one running swiftly north, Dhanañjaya, having gone a hundred steps quickly, seized (him) by the hair tuft.)
But Dhanañjaya, having run after the one going north, quickly covered a hundred steps and seized him by the hair.
सोऽर्जुनेन परामृष्टः पर्यदेवयदार्तवत्। बहुलं कृपणं चैव विराटस्य सुतस्तदा ॥०४-३६-३८॥
so'rujūnena parāmṛṣṭaḥ paryadevayad ārtavat। bahulaṃ kṛpaṇaṃ caiva virāṭasya sutas tadā ॥04-36-38॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; परामृष्टः (parāmṛṣṭaḥ) - struck; touched; पर्यदेवयत् (paryadevayat) - lamented; grieved; आर्तवत् (ārtavat) - like one afflicted; like distressed; बहुलम् (bahulam) - copiously; much; कृपणम् (kṛpaṇam) - miserably; pitiably; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virata; सुतः (sutaḥ) - the son; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, struck by Arjuna, lamented like one afflicted; copiously, pitiably indeed, the son of Virata then.)
When struck by Arjuna, the son of Virata then lamented profusely and pitiably, like one in distress. (04-36-38)
शातकुम्भस्य शुद्धस्य शतं निष्कान्ददामि ते। मणीनष्टौ च वैडूर्यान्हेमबद्धान्महाप्रभान् ॥०४-३६-३९॥
śātakumbhasya śuddhasya śataṃ niṣkān dadāmi te। maṇīn aṣṭau ca vaiḍūryān hemabaddhān mahāprabhān ॥04-36-39॥
[शातकुम्भस्य (śātakumbhasya) - of electrum (śātakumbha); शुद्धस्य (śuddhasya) - of pure; clean; शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; निष्कान् (niṣkān) - niṣka coins; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; ते (te) - to you; मणीन् (maṇīn) - gems; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; च (ca) - and; वैडूर्यान् (vaiḍūryān) - lapis lazuli (vaidurya stones); हेमबद्धान् (hemabaddhān) - bound with gold; महाप्रभान् (mahāprabhān) - of great luster;]
(Of electrum, of pure, a hundred niṣka coins I give to you; gems, eight, and lapis lazuli ones bound with gold, of great luster.)
I give you one hundred pure electrum niṣka coins, and also eight gems of lapis lazuli bound in gold, all of great luster. (04-36-39)
हेमदण्डप्रतिच्छन्नं रथं युक्तं च सुव्रजैः। मत्तांश्च दश मातङ्गान्मुञ्च मां त्वं बृहन्नडे ॥०४-३६-४०॥
hemadaṇḍapraticchannaṃ rathaṃ yuktaṃ ca su-vrajaiḥ. mattāṃś ca daśa mātaṅgān muñca māṃ tvaṃ bṛhannade ॥04-36-40॥
[हेमदण्डप्रतिच्छन्नं (hemadaṇḍa-praticchannam) - covered with golden poles; रथं (ratham) - chariot; युक्तं (yuktam) - yoked; च (ca) - and; सुव्रजैः (su-vrajaiḥ) - with excellent horses; मत्तान् (mattān) - intoxicated; च (ca) - and; दश (daśa) - ten; मातङ्गान् (mātaṅgān) - elephants; मुञ्च (muñca) - release; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; बृहन्नडे (bṛhannade) - O Bṛhannadā;]
(Covered with golden poles, chariot yoked and with excellent horses, intoxicated and ten elephants release me you, O Bṛhannadā.)
O Bṛhannadā, you release me along with the chariot covered with golden poles, yoked with excellent horses, and ten intoxicated elephants. (04-36-40)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमादीनि वाक्यानि विलपन्तमचेतसम्। प्रहस्य पुरुषव्याघ्रो रथस्यान्तिकमानयत् ॥०४-३६-४१॥
evamādīni vākyāni vilapantam acetasaṃ | prahasya puruṣavyāghraḥ rathasya antikam ānayat ॥04-36-41॥
[एवमादीनि (evam-ādīni) - such and similar; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - statements; विलपन्तम् (vilapantam) - lamenting; अचेतसम् (acetasaṃ) - unconscious; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having laughed at; पुरुषव्याघ्रः (puruṣavyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; रथस्य (rathasya) - of the chariot; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - near; आनयत् (ānayat) - brought;]
(Such and similar statements, lamenting, the unconscious (person); having laughed at (him), the tiger among men brought to the chariot's proximity.)
Having laughed at him as he lamented such statements in an unconscious state, the tiger among men brought (him) close to the chariot. (04-36-41)
अथैनमब्रवीत्पार्थो भयार्तं नष्टचेतसम्। यदि नोत्सहसे योद्धुं शत्रुभिः शत्रुकर्शन ॥ एहि मे त्वं हयान्यच्छ युध्यमानस्य शत्रुभिः ॥०४-३६-४२॥
athainamabravīt pārtho bhayārtaṃ naṣṭacetasam। yadi notsahase yoddhuṃ śatrubhiḥ śatrukarśana ॥ ehi me tvaṃ hayān yaccha yudhyamānasya śatrubhiḥ ॥04-36-42॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - the son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); भयार्तम् (bhayārtam) - afflicted by fear; नष्टचेतसम् (naṣṭacetasam) - lost mind; यदि (yadi) - if; न (na) - not; उत्सहसे (utsahase) - you are able; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - with enemies; शत्रुकर्शन (śatrukarśana) - subduer of enemies; एहि (ehi) - come; मे (me) - my; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हयान् (hayān) - horses; यच्छ (yaccha) - restrain; युध्यमानस्य (yudhyamānasya) - fighting; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - with enemies;]
(Then Arjuna spoke to him, afflicted by fear, his mind lost: "If you are not able to fight with the enemies, O subduer of enemies, come, you restrain my horses as I am fighting with the enemies." (04-36-42))
Then Arjuna said to him, who was afflicted by fear and had lost his mind: "If you are not able to fight with the enemies, O subduer of enemies, then come, you take hold of my horses as I fight with the enemies." (04-36-42)
प्रयाह्येतद्रथानीकं मद्बाहुबलरक्षितः। अप्रधृष्यतमं घोरं गुप्तं वीरैर्महारथैः ॥०४-३६-४३॥
prayāhy etad rathānīkaṃ mad-bāhu-bala-rakṣitaḥ। apradhṛṣyatamaṃ ghoraṃ guptaṃ vīrair mahārathaiḥ॥04-36-43॥
[प्रयाहि (prayāhi) - go forth; act; एतत् (etat) - this; रथानीकम् (rathānīkam) - chariot-army; मद्बाहुबलरक्षितः (mad-bāhu-bala-rakṣitaḥ) - protected by my arm's strength; अप्रधृष्यतमम् (apradhṛṣyatamam) - most unassailable; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; गुप्तम् (guptam) - protected; वीरैः (vīraiḥ) - by heroes; महारथैः (mahārathaiḥ) - by great chariot-warriors;]
(Go forth to this chariot-army protected by my arm's strength; most unassailable, terrible, protected by heroes, by great chariot-warriors.)
Go forward to this chariot-army, protected by the strength of my arms—most unassailable, dreadful, guarded by heroes and mighty chariot-warriors. (04-36-43)
मा भैस्त्वं राजपुत्राग्र्य क्षत्रियोऽसि परन्तप। अहं वै कुरुभिर्योत्स्याम्यवजेष्यामि ते पशून् ॥०४-३६-४४॥
mā bhaistvaṃ rājaputrāgrya kṣatriyo'si parantapa। ahaṃ vai kurubhir yotsyāmyavajeṣyāmi te paśūn ॥04-36-44॥
[मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhaiḥ) - fear; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; राजपुत्राग्र्य (rājaputrāgrya) - excellent among princes; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a warrior; असि (asi) - are (you are); परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वै (vai) - indeed; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - with the Kurus; योत्स्यामि (yotsyāmi) - will fight; अवजेष्यामि (avajeṣyāmi) - will defeat; ते (te) - your; पशून् (paśūn) - cattle;]
(Do not fear, you, excellent prince, you are a Kshatriya, scorcher of foes; I indeed will fight with the Kurus, I will defeat (them), your cattle.)
Do not fear, O foremost of princes, you are a Kshatriya and a conqueror of enemies. I will fight the Kurus and retrieve your cattle for you. (04-36-44)
प्रविश्यैतद्रथानीकमप्रधृष्यं दुरासदम्। यन्ता भूस्त्वं नरश्रेष्ठ योत्स्येऽहं कुरुभिः सह ॥०४-३६-४५॥
praviśyaitadrathānikamapradhṛṣyaṁ durāsadam। yantā bhūstvaṁ naraśreṣṭha yotsye'haṁ kurubhiḥ saha ॥04-36-45॥
[प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; एतत् (etat) - this; रथ-अनीकम् (ratha-anīkam) - the chariot-division; अप्रधृष्यम् (apradhṛṣyam) - invincible; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - hard to approach; यन्ता (yantā) - the charioteer; भूः (bhūḥ) - be (you); त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; नर-श्रेष्ठ (nara-śreṣṭha) - O best of men; योत्स्ये (yotsye) - I will fight; अहम् (aham) - I; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - with the Kurus; सह (saha) - together with;]
(Having entered this chariot-division, invincible, hard to approach, be you the charioteer, O best of men; I will fight together with the Kurus.)
Enter this invincible and hard-to-approach chariot-division; you be the charioteer, O best of men, and I will fight along with the Kurus. (04-36-45)
एवं ब्रुवाणो बीभत्सुर्वैराटिमपराजितः। समाश्वास्य मुहूर्तं तमुत्तरं भरतर्षभ ॥०४-३६-४६॥
evaṁ bruvāṇo bībhatsur vairāṭim aparājitaḥ। samāśvāsya muhūrtaṁ tam uttaraṁ bharatarṣabha ॥04-36-46॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; ब्रुवाणः (bruvāṇaḥ) - speaking; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); वैराटिम् (vairāṭim) - to Uttara (son of Virāṭa); अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - unvanquished; समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having comforted; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; तम् (tam) - him; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - Uttara; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Thus speaking Bībhatsu, unvanquished, to Uttara (son of Virāṭa), having comforted him for a moment, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O bull among the Bharatas, thus Bībhatsu (Arjuna), unvanquished, having spoken to Uttara, comforted him for a moment. (04-36-46)
तत एनं विचेष्टन्तमकामं भयपीडितम्। रथमारोपयामास पार्थः प्रहरतां वरः ॥०४-३६-४७॥
tat enaṃ viceṣṭantam-akāmaṃ bhayapīḍitam। ratham-āropayāmāsa pārthaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ ॥04-36-47॥
[तत (tat) - then; एनं (enaṃ) - him; विचेष्टन्तम् (viceṣṭantam) - struggling; अकामं (akāmaṃ) - unwilling; भयपीडितम् (bhayapīḍitam) - afflicted by fear; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आरोपयामास (āropayāmāsa) - caused to ascend; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; प्रहरतां (praharatām) - of those striking (warriors); वरः (varaḥ) - the chief;]
(Then him, struggling, unwilling, afflicted by fear, onto the chariot caused to ascend Pārtha, the chief of striking (warriors).)
Then Pārtha, the foremost of warriors, caused him—struggling, unwilling, and afflicted by fear—to ascend the chariot. (04-36-47)
