taṃ dṛṣṭvā klībaveṣeṇa rathasthaṃ narapuṅgavam। śamīm abhimukhaṃ yāntaṃ ratham āropya ca uttaram॥04-37-1॥

(Having seen him, in the guise of a eunuch, standing in the chariot, the foremost of men, going towards the śamī tree, having placed the bow in the chariot, and.)
Seeing him, the best of men, disguised as a eunuch, standing in the chariot and proceeding towards the śamī tree, having placed the bow in the chariot, (04-37-1)
भीष्मद्रोणमुखास्तत्र कुरूणां रथसत्तमाः। वित्रस्तमनसः सर्वे धनञ्जयकृताद्भयात् ॥०४-३७-२॥
bhīṣma-droṇa-mukhās tatra kurūṇāṃ ratha-sattamāḥ। vitrasta-manasāḥ sarve dhanañjaya-kṛtāt bhayāt॥04-37-2॥
[भीष्मद्रोणमुखाः (bhīṣma-droṇa-mukhāḥ) - headed by Bhīṣma and Droṇa; तत्र (tatra) - there; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; रथसत्तमाः (ratha-sattamāḥ) - the foremost among chariot-warriors; वित्रस्तमनसः (vitrasta-manasāḥ) - whose minds were terrified; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धनञ्जयकृतात् (dhanañjaya-kṛtāt) - caused by Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear;]
(There, the foremost among chariot-warriors of the Kurus, headed by Bhīṣma and Droṇa, all whose minds were terrified from fear caused by Dhanañjaya.)
The leading chariot-warriors of the Kurus, headed by Bhīṣma and Droṇa, were all filled with terror because of the fear caused by Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). (04-37-2)
तानवेक्ष्य हतोत्साहानुत्पातानपि चाद्भुतान्। गुरुः शस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठो भारद्वाजोऽभ्यभाषत ॥०४-३७-३॥
tān avekṣya hatotsāhān utpātān api ca adbhutān। guruḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ bhāradvājaḥ abhyabhāṣata ॥04-37-3॥
[तान् (tān) - them; अवेक्ष्य (avekṣya) - having seen; हतोत्साहान् (hatotsāhān) - whose enthusiasm was destroyed; उत्पातान् (utpātān) - calamities; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अद्भुतान् (adbhutān) - wonderful; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; शस्त्रभृताम् (śastrabhṛtām) - of the wielders of weapons; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; भारद्वाजः (bhāradvājaḥ) - Bharadvāja; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed (spoke);]
(Having seen them, whose enthusiasm was destroyed, and also the calamities and the wonderful (events), the teacher, the best of the wielders of weapons, Bharadvāja, addressed (them).)
When Bharadvāja, the venerable teacher and foremost among warriors, saw them dispirited and the wondrous portents and disasters, he began to address them. (04-37-3)
चलाश्च वाताः संवान्ति रूक्षाः परुषनिःस्वनाः। भस्मवर्णप्रकाशेन तमसा संवृतं नभः ॥०४-३७-४॥
calāś ca vātāḥ saṁvānti rūkṣāḥ paruṣaniḥsvanāḥ। bhasmavarṇaprakāśena tamasā saṁvṛtaṁ nabhaḥ ॥04-37-4॥
[चलाः (calāḥ) - moving; च (ca) - and; वाताः (vātāḥ) - winds; संवान्ति (saṁvānti) - blow together; रूक्षाः (rūkṣāḥ) - harsh; परुषनिःस्वनाः (paruṣaniḥsvanāḥ) - with harsh sound; भस्मवर्णप्रकाशेन (bhasmavarṇaprakāśena) - with ash-colored brightness; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; संवृतं (saṁvṛtam) - covered; नभः (nabhaḥ) - the sky;]
(Moving and winds blow together, harsh, with harsh sound; with ash-colored brightness, by darkness, the sky covered.)
The winds that move together, harsh and noisy, blow; the sky, with an ash-colored brightness, is covered by darkness. (04-37-4)
रूक्षवर्णाश्च जलदा दृश्यन्तेऽद्भुतदर्शनाः। निःसरन्ति च कोशेभ्यः शस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥०४-३७-५॥
rūkṣavarṇāś ca jaladā dṛśyante'dbhutadarśanāḥ। niḥsaranti ca kośebhyaḥ śastrāṇi vividhāni ca॥04-37-5॥
[रूक्षवर्णाः (rūkṣavarṇāḥ) - having harsh color; च (ca) - and; जलदाः (jaladāḥ) - clouds; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; अद्भुतदर्शनाः (adbhutadarśanāḥ) - wonderful appearance; निःसरन्ति (niḥsaranti) - emerge; च (ca) - and; कोशेभ्यः (kośebhyaḥ) - from sheaths; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and;]
(Clouds of harsh color and of wonderful appearance are seen. And various weapons emerge from sheaths.)
Clouds of harsh colors and marvelous appearance are seen, and various weapons come forth from their sheaths. (04-37-5)
शिवाश्च विनदन्त्येता दीप्तायां दिशि दारुणाः। हयाश्चाश्रूणि मुञ्चन्ति ध्वजाः कम्पन्त्यकम्पिताः ॥०४-३७-६॥
śivāś ca vinadanty etā dīptāyāṃ diśi dāruṇāḥ। hayāś cāśrūṇi muñcanti dhvajāḥ kampanty akampitāḥ॥04-37-6॥
[शिवाः (śivāḥ) - auspicious (signs); च (ca) - and; विनदन्ति (vinadanti) - are noisily crying; एता (etā) - these; दीप्तायाम् (dīptāyām) - in blazing; दिशि (diśi) - direction; दारुणाः (dāruṇāḥ) - terrible; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; च (ca) - and; आश्रूणि (aśrūṇi) - tears; मुञ्चन्ति (muñcanti) - are shedding; ध्वजाः (dhvajāḥ) - banners; कम्पन्ति (kampanti) - are trembling; अकम्पिताः (akampitāḥ) - unshaken (hitherto);]
(And auspicious (signs) also these are noisily crying in the blazing direction terrible. Horses also tears are shedding. Banners are trembling unshaken (till now).)
Auspicious signs are crying terribly in the blazing direction. The horses are shedding tears, and banners that were previously motionless are trembling. (04-37-6)
यादृशान्यत्र रूपाणि संदृश्यन्ते बहून्यपि। यत्ता भवन्तस्तिष्ठन्तु स्याद्युद्धं समुपस्थितम् ॥०४-३७-७॥
yādṛśānyatra rūpāṇi sandṛśyante bahūnyapi। yattā bhavantastiṣṭhantu syādyuddhaṃ samupasthitam ॥04-37-7॥
[यादृशानि (yādṛśāni) - of what kind; such as; these; अत्र (atra) - here; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; appearances; संदृश्यन्ते (sandṛśyante) - are seen; are perceived; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; अपि (api) - also; even; यत्ता (yattā) - prepared; ready; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (respectful plural); तिष्ठन्तु (tiṣṭhantu) - let them stand; let them remain; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; might be; युद्धम् (yuddham) - war; battle; समुपस्थितम् (samupasthitam) - arrived; has come;]
(Such forms as are seen here, although many; let you remain prepared, the battle may have arrived.)
Various forms such as are seen here, though many, let you all stand ready; a battle may be at hand. (04-37-7)
रक्षध्वमपि चात्मानं व्यूहध्वं वाहिनीमपि। वैशसं च प्रतीक्षध्वं रक्षध्वं चापि गोधनम् ॥०४-३७-८॥
rakṣadhvam api ca ātmānam vyūhadhvam vāhinīm api। vaiśasam ca pratīkṣadhvam rakṣadhvam ca api godhanam ॥04-37-8॥
[रक्षध्वम् (rakṣadhvam) - protect (you all); अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourselves; व्यूहध्वम् (vyūhadhvam) - array (you all in formation); वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - the army; अपि (api) - also; वैशसं (vaiśasam) - slaughter; च (ca) - and; प्रतीक्षध्वम् (pratīkṣadhvam) - wait (you all); रक्षध्वम् (rakṣadhvam) - protect (you all); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गोधनम् (godhanam) - the cattle (wealth of cows);]
(Protect also yourselves, array (you all) the army also, and wait (you all) for the slaughter, and also protect the cattle.)
Protect yourselves also, arrange the army, wait for the attack, and also protect the cattle. (04-37-8)
एष वीरो महेष्वासः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः। आगतः क्लीबवेषेण पार्थो नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥०४-३७-९॥
eṣa vīro maheṣvāsaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। āgataḥ klībaveṣeṇa pārtho nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ॥04-37-9॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; (masculine singular pronoun); वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; courageous man; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - mighty-armed; wielder of great bow; सर्वशस्त्रभृताम् (sarvaśastrabhṛtām) - of all weapon-bearers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; chief; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come; arrived; क्लीबवेषेण (klībaveṣeṇa) - in a eunuch's disguise; with the appearance of an impotent person; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; Arjuna; (son of Pṛthā); नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अत्र (atra) - here; in this; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(This hero, mighty-armed, of all weapon-bearers the best, has come in eunuch's disguise, Pārtha (Arjuna); there is not here doubt.)
This is Arjuna, the heroic and mighty-armed chief among all weapon-bearers, who has come in the guise of a eunuch; there is no doubt about it. (04-37-9)
स एष पार्थो विक्रान्तः सव्यसाची परन्तपः। नायुद्धेन निवर्तेत सर्वैरपि मरुद्गणैः ॥०४-३७-१०॥
sa eṣa pārtho vikrāntaḥ savyasācī parantapaḥ। nāyuddhena nivarteta sarvair api marud-gaṇaiḥ॥04-37-10॥
[स (sa) - he; एष (eṣa) - this; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); विक्रान्तः (vikrāntaḥ) - valiant; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - ambidextrous archer; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; न (na) - not; अयुद्धेन (ayuddhena) - without battle; निवर्तेत (nivarteta) - would/will turn back; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; अपि (api) - even; मरुद्गणैः (marud-gaṇaiḥ) - by the groups of Maruts (divine beings);]
(He, this Pārtha, valiant, ambidextrous archer, scorcher of foes, would not turn back without battle even by all the hosts of Maruts.)
This Pārtha, a valiant, ambidextrous archer and scorcher of foes, would not turn back from battle even if confronted by all the hosts of Maruts. (04-37-10)
क्लेशितश्च वने शूरो वासवेन च शिक्षितः। अमर्षवशमापन्नो योत्स्यते नात्र संशयः ॥०४-३७-११॥
kleśitaś ca vane śūro vāsavena ca śikṣitaḥ। amarṣavaśam āpanno yotsyate nātra saṃśayaḥ ॥04-37-11॥
[क्लेशितः (kleśitaḥ) - distressed; च (ca) - and; वने (vane) - in the forest; शूरः (śūraḥ) - hero; वासवेन (vāsavena) - by Vāsava (Indra); च (ca) - and; शिक्षितः (śikṣitaḥ) - trained; अमर्षवशम् (amarṣavaśam) - under the influence of indignation; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - having attained; योत्स्यते (yotsyate) - will fight; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Distressed and in the forest, the hero, trained by Vāsava (Indra), having come under the influence of indignation, will fight. There is no doubt here.)
Distressed and living in the forest, the heroic one, trained by Indra, being overcome by anger, will certainly fight. There is no doubt about this. (04-37-11)
नेहास्य प्रतियोद्धारमहं पश्यामि कौरवाः। महादेवोऽपि पार्थेन श्रूयते युधि तोषितः ॥०४-३७-१२॥
nehāsya pratiyoddhāramahaṃ paśyāmi kauravāḥ। mahādevo'pi pārthena śrūyate yudhi toṣitaḥ॥04-37-12॥
[नेह (neha) - here; in this place; अस्य (asya) - his; प्रतियोद्धारम् (pratiyoddhāram) - opponent; one capable of fighting against; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - see; perceive; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - Kauravas; (O) Kauravas; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahadeva; the great god (Śiva); अपि (api) - even; also; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Partha; by Arjuna; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; is said; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; तोषितः (toṣitaḥ) - pleased; gratified;]
(Here his opponent I do not see, O Kauravas. Even Mahadeva is heard to have been pleased by Partha in battle.)
O Kauravas, I do not see anyone here who can oppose him. It is said that even Mahadeva himself was pleased by Partha in battle. (04-37-12)
कर्ण उवाच॥

सदा भवान्फल्गुनस्य गुणैरस्मान्विकत्थसे। न चार्जुनः कला पूर्णा मम दुर्योधनस्य वा ॥०४-३७-१३॥
sadā bhavān phalgunasya guṇair asmān vicatthase. na ca arjunaḥ kalā pūrṇā mama duryodhanasya vā ॥04-37-13॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; भवान् (bhavān) - you; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Phalguna (Arjuna); गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by qualities; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; विकत्थसे (vicatthase) - you boast; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; कला (kalā) - part; पूर्णा (pūrṇā) - full; मम (mama) - of me; दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; वा (vā) - or;]
(Always you boast to us of Arjuna's (Phalguna's) qualities. Not even a part of Arjuna is full of me or of Duryodhana.)
You are always boasting to us about the qualities of Arjuna, but neither I nor Duryodhana possess even a full part of Arjuna's abilities. (04-37-13)
दुर्योधन उवाच॥

यद्येष पार्थो राधेय कृतं कार्यं भवेन्मम। ज्ञाताः पुनश्चरिष्यन्ति द्वादशान्यान्हि वत्सरान् ॥०४-३७-१४॥
yadyeṣa pārtho rādheya kṛtaṃ kāryaṃ bhavenmama. jñātāḥ punaś cariṣyanti dvādaśānyān hi vatsarān ॥04-37-14॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pṛthā; राधेय-कृतम् (rādheya-kṛtam) - done by Rādheya; कार्यं (kāryam) - task; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; मम (mama) - my; ज्ञाताः (jñātāḥ) - kinsmen; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; चरिष्यन्ति (cariṣyanti) - will move/live; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; हि (hi) - indeed; वत्सरान् (vatsarān) - years;]
(If this son of Pṛthā, the task done by Rādheya would be mine. Kinsmen again will live indeed twelve other years.)
If this son of Pṛthā considers the task done by Rādheya as mine, my kinsmen will again live for another twelve years. (04-37-14)
अथैष कश्चिदेवान्यः क्लीबवेषेण मानवः। शरैरेनं सुनिशितैः पातयिष्यामि भूतले ॥०४-३७-१५॥
athaiṣa kaścid evānyaḥ klībāveṣeṇa mānavaḥ। śarair enaṃ suniśitaiḥ pātayiṣyāmi bhūtale ॥04-37-15॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एष (eṣa) - this; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; देवः (devaḥ) - god; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; क्लीबवेषेण (klībāveṣeṇa) - with the appearance/guise (veṣa) of an impotent (klība); मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; एनम् (enam) - him; सुनिशितैः (suniśitaiḥ) - very sharp; पातयिष्यामि (pātayiṣyāmi) - I shall cause to fall; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the ground;]
(Then this, some other god, with the appearance of an impotent man, with very sharp arrows, him I shall cause to fall upon the ground.)
Then this other god, disguised as an impotent man, I shall strike down to the ground with very sharp arrows. (04-37-15)

tasmin bruvati tadvākyaṃ dhārtarāṣṭre parantape। bhīṣmo droṇaḥ kṛpo drauṇiḥ pauruṣaṃ tad apūjayan ॥04-37-16॥
[तस्मिन्ब्रुवति (tasmin bruvati) - while he was speaking; तद्वाक्यं (tadvākyaṃ) - those words; धार्तराष्ट्रे (dhārtarāṣṭre) - in Dhārtarāṣṭra (Dhritarashtra's son, i.e. Duryodhana); परन्तपे (parantape) - in the great oppressor of enemies; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kripa; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drauni (Ashvatthama, son of Drona); पौरुषं (pauruṣam) - manliness; तत् (tat) - that; अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - honoured;]
(While he was speaking those words in Dhārtarāṣṭra, the great oppressor of enemies, Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Drauni, manliness, that, honoured.)
While he was speaking those words to Dhritarashtra's son, the great oppressor of foes, Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Drauni (Ashvatthama) honoured that manliness. (04-37-16)
