समादिष्टो मया क्षिप्रं धनूंष्यवहरोत्तर। नेमानि हि त्वदीयानि सोढुं शक्ष्यन्ति मे बलम् ॥०४-३८-२॥
samādiṣṭo mayā kṣipraṃ dhanūṃṣy avaharottara। nemāni hi tvadīyāni soḍhuṃ śakṣyanti me balam ॥04-38-2॥

भारं वापि गुरुं हर्तुं कुञ्जरं वा प्रमर्दितुम्। मम वा बाहुविक्षेपं शत्रूनिह विजेष्यतः ॥०४-३८-३॥
bhāraṃ vāpi guruṃ hartuṃ kuñjaraṃ vā pramarditum। mama vā bāhuvikṣepaṃ śatrūniha vijeṣyataḥ॥04-38-3॥

(A burden even heavy to be carried or an elephant to crush, my or arm-motion, enemies here who will conquer.)
Who here would be able to carry a burden, however heavy, or crush an elephant, or overcome my arm’s sweep and conquer the enemies here? (04-38-3)
तस्माद्भूमिञ्जयारोह शमीमेतां पलाशिनीम्। अस्यां हि पाण्डुपुत्राणां धनूंषि निहितान्युत ॥०४-३८-४॥
tasmādbhūmiñ jayāroha śamīmetāṃ palāśinīm। asyāṃ hi pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ dhanūṃṣi nihitānyuta ॥04-38-4॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - the ground; जय (jaya) - victory; आरोह (āroha) - ascend; शमीम् (śamīm) - the śamī tree; एताम् (etām) - this; पलाशिनीम् (palāśinīm) - bearing palāśa leaves; अस्याम् (asyām) - in this; हि (hi) - indeed; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the Pāṇḍu sons; धनूंषि (dhanūṃṣi) - bows; निहितानि (nihitāni) - placed; उत (uta) - also;]
(Therefore, O victor, ascend the ground, this śamī tree bearing palāśa leaves; in this, indeed, the bows of the sons of Pāṇḍu are placed also.)
Therefore, O victorious one, climb onto the ground, onto this śamī tree with palāśa leaves; for in this tree, the bows of the sons of Pāṇḍu are indeed also kept. (04-38-4)
युधिष्ठिरस्य भीमस्य बीभत्सोर्यमयोस्तथा। ध्वजाः शराश्च शूराणां दिव्यानि कवचानि च ॥०४-३८-५॥
yudhiṣṭhirasya bhīmasya bībhatsor yamayostathā। dhvajāḥ śarāś ca śūrāṇāṃ divyāni kavacāni ca ॥04-38-5॥

अत्र चैतन्महावीर्यं धनुः पार्थस्य गाण्डिवम्। एकं शतसहस्रेण संमितं राष्ट्रवर्धनम् ॥०४-३८-६॥
atra cai tan-mahāvīryaṃ dhanuḥ pārthasya gāṇḍivam। ekaṃ śatasahasreṇa saṃmitaṃ rāṣṭravardhanam ॥04-38-6॥

Here indeed this bow of great might, Gāṇḍiva, belonging to Pārtha, is a single kingdom-enlarger, equal to a hundred thousand.
व्यायामसहमत्यर्थं तृणराजसमं महत्। सर्वायुधमहामात्रं शत्रुसम्बाधकारकम् ॥०४-३८-७॥
vyāyāmasa-hamatyarthaṃ tṛṇa-rājasamaṃ mahat। sarvāyudha-mahāmātraṃ śatru-sambādhakārakam ॥04-38-7॥
[व्यायामसहमत्यर्थं (vyāyāmasaham-atyartham) - especially endurant to exertion; तृणराजसमं (tṛṇa-rājasamam) - equal to the lord of grass (a horse); महत् (mahat) - great; सर्वायुधमहामात्रं (sarvāyudha-mahāmātram) - chief of all weapon-carrying animals; शत्रुसम्बाधकारकम् (śatru-sambādhakārakam) - one that brings distress to foes;]

सुवर्णविकृतं दिव्यं श्लक्ष्णमायतमव्रणम्। अलं भारं गुरुं वोढुं दारुणं चारुदर्शनम् ॥ तादृशान्येव सर्वाणि बलवन्ति दृढानि च ॥०४-३८-८॥

(Made of gold, divine, smooth, long, unblemished; fit to bear weight, heavy, hard, beautiful in appearance; such indeed all are strong and firm.)

अस्मिन्वृक्षे किलोद्बद्धं शरीरमिति नः श्रुतम्। तदहं राजपुत्रः सन्स्पृशेयं पाणिना कथम् ॥०४-३८-९॥
asmin vṛkṣe kila udbaddhaṃ śarīram iti naḥ śrutam। tad ahaṃ rājaputraḥ san spṛśeyaṃ pāṇinā katham॥04-38-9॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; वृक्षे (vṛkṣe) - tree; किल (kila) - indeed; उद्बद्धं (udbaddhaṃ) - tied up; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; तत् (tat) - that; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; राजपुत्रः (rājaputraḥ) - prince; सन् (san) - being; स्पृशेयं (spṛśeyaṃ) - might touch; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with hand; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(In this tree, indeed, body tied up thus to us heard. That I, prince being, might touch with hand, how?)
It is heard by us that a body is indeed tied up on this tree. So how, being a prince, could I touch it with my hand? (04-38-9)
नैवंविधं मया युक्तमालब्धुं क्षत्रयोनिना। महता राजपुत्रेण मन्त्रयज्ञविदा सता ॥०४-३८-१०॥
naivaṃ-vidhaṃ mayā yuktam ālabdhuṃ kṣatrayoninā। mahatā rājaputreṇa mantrayajñavidā satā ॥04-38-10॥
[नैवंविधं (naivaṃ-vidham) - not of such kind; मया (mayā) - by me; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; fitting; आलब्धुं (ālabdhuṃ) - to obtain; क्षत्रयोनिना (kṣatrayoninā) - by one born in the kṣatriya lineage; महताः (mahatā) - by the great; राजपुत्रेण (rājaputreṇa) - by the prince; मन्त्रयज्ञविदा (mantra-yajña-vidā) - knower of ritual and sacred formulas; सता (satā) - by the true one;]
(Not of such kind by me proper to obtain by one of kṣatriya birth, by the great prince, by the knower of ritual and sacred formulas, by the true one.)
Such an act is not proper for me to attain, being of kṣatriya birth, a great prince, a knower of rituals and mantras, and one who is virtuous. (04-38-10)
स्पृष्टवन्तं शरीरं मां शववाहमिवाशुचिम्। कथं वा व्यवहार्यं वै कुर्वीथास्त्वं बृहन्नडे ॥०४-३८-११॥
spṛṣṭavantaṃ śarīraṃ māṃ śavavāham ivāśucim। kathaṃ vā vyavahāryaṃ vai kurvīthās tvaṃ bṛhannade ॥04-38-11॥

(Having touched my body, (me) like a corpse-bearer, (as) impure, how or for social interaction indeed would you make, O Bṛhannadā?)
O Bṛhannadā, having touched my body, which is impure like that of a corpse-bearer, how indeed would you make me fit for social interaction? (04-38-11)

vyavahāryaś ca rājendra śuciś caiva bhaviṣyasi. dhanūṃṣy etāni mā bhais tvaṃ śarīraṃ nātra vidyate ॥04-38-12॥

(To be engaged in action and pure indeed you will become, O king. These bows, do not fear, you; body not here exists.)
O king, you will indeed become active and pure. Do not be afraid of these bows; your body does not exist here. (04-38-12)
दायादं मत्स्यराजस्य कुले जातं मनस्विनम्। कथं त्वा निन्दितं कर्म कारयेयं नृपात्मज ॥०४-३८-१३॥
dāyādaṃ matsyarājasya kule jātaṃ manasvinam। kathaṃ tvā ninditaṃ karma kārayeyaṃ nṛpātmaja ॥04-38-13॥

O prince, how could I cause you, the high-minded heir born in the family of the king of Matsya, to perform a blameworthy act? (04-38-13)

तमन्वशासच्छत्रुघ्नो रथे तिष्ठन्धनञ्जयः। परिवेष्टनमेतेषां क्षिप्रं चैव व्यपानुद ॥०४-३८-१५॥
tam anvaśāsa chatrughno rathe tiṣṭhan dhanañjayaḥ। pariveṣṭanam eteṣāṃ kṣipraṃ ca eva vyapānuda ॥04-38-15॥

तथा संनहनान्येषां परिमुच्य समन्ततः। अपश्यद्गाण्डिवं तत्र चतुर्भिरपरैः सह ॥०४-३८-१६॥
tathā saṃnahanān yeṣāṃ parimucya samantataḥ। apaśyad gāṇḍivaṃ tatra caturbhir aparaiḥ saha॥04-38-16॥

teṣāṃ vimucyamānānāṃ dhanuṣām arkavarcasām। viniśceruḥ prabhā divyā grahāṇām udayeṣv iva ॥04-38-17॥

स तेषां रूपमालोक्य भोगिनामिव जृम्भताम्। हृष्टरोमा भयोद्विग्नः क्षणेन समपद्यत ॥०४-३८-१८॥
sa teṣāṃ rūpam ālokya bhoginām iva jṛmbhatām। hṛṣṭaromā bhayodvignaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata ॥04-38-18॥
