[सुवर्णविकृतानि (suvarṇavikṛtāni) - made of/refined by gold; इमानि (imāni) - these; आयुधानि (āyudhāni) - weapons; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; रुचिराणि (rucirāṇi) - splendid; प्रकाशन्ते (prakāśante) - shine; पार्थानाम् (pārthānām) - of the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and brothers); आशुकारिणाम् (āśukāriṇām) - swift-acting;]
(These weapons made of gold, of the great-souled, splendid, shine, of the sons of Pṛthā swift-acting.)
These splendid weapons made of gold, belonging to the great-souled sons of Pṛthā, who act swiftly, shine brilliantly. (04-39-1)
क्व नु स्विदर्जुनः पार्थः कौरव्यो वा युधिष्ठिरः। नकुलः सहदेवश्च भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ॥०४-३९-२॥

सर्व एव महात्मानः सर्वामित्रविनाशनाः। राज्यमक्षैः पराकीर्य न श्रूयन्ते कदाचन ॥०४-३९-३॥
sarva eva mahātmānaḥ sarvāmitravināśanāḥ। rājyam akṣaiḥ parākīrya na śrūyante kadācana ॥04-39-3॥
[सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; सर्वामित्रविनाशनाः (sarvāmitravināśanāḥ) - destroyers of all enemies; राज्यमक्षैः (rājyam akṣaiḥ) - kingdom by dice; पराकीर्य (parākīrya) - having been scattered; न (na) - not; श्रूयन्ते (śrūyante) - are heard (of); कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time;]
(All indeed great-souled ones, destroyers of all enemies, kingdom by dice having been scattered, are not heard (of) at any time.)
All truly great-souled destroyers of every enemy—none are ever heard of losing their kingdom through dice. (04-39-3)
द्रौपदी क्व च पाञ्चाली स्त्रीरत्नमिति विश्रुता। जितानक्षैस्तदा कृष्णा तानेवान्वगमद्वनम् ॥०४-३९-४॥

[द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; क्व (kva) - where; च (ca) - and; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - the princess of Pāñcāla; स्त्रीरत्नम् (strīratnam) - jewel among women; इति (iti) - thus; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - renowned; जितानक्षैः (jitānakṣaiḥ) - won at dice; तदा (tadā) - then; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (an epithet of Draupadī); तान् (tān) - them; एव (eva) - only; अन्वगमत् (anvagamat) - followed; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest;]
(Draupadī where and Pāñcālī, jewel among women thus renowned, having been won at dice then Kṛṣṇā those only followed to the forest.)
Where then was Draupadī, the Pāñcālī, famed as the jewel among women? Having been won at dice, Kṛṣṇā followed those very ones to the forest. (04-39-4)

aham asmi arjunaḥ pārthaḥ sabhā-stāraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ| ballavo bhīmasenas tu pituḥ te rasa-pācakaḥ ॥04-39-5॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - am; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pritha; सभास्तारः (sabhā-stāraḥ) - hall administrator; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; बल्लवः (ballavaḥ) - cook; servant; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; तु (tu) - but; पितुः (pituḥ) - of your father; ते (te) - your; रसपाचकः (rasa-pācakaḥ) - cook; one who prepares food;]
(I am Arjuna, the son of Pritha, the hall administrator is Yudhishthira. The cook is Bhimasena, but as for your father, he is the one who prepares food.)
I am Arjuna, Partha, and the hall administrator is Yudhishthira. The household servant is Bhimasena, but your father is the cook. (04-39-5)
अश्वबन्धोऽथ नकुलः सहदेवस्तु गोकुले। सैरन्ध्रीं द्रौपदीं विद्धि यत्कृते कीचका हताः ॥०४-३९-६॥
aśvabandho'tha nakulaḥ sahadevastu gokule। sairandhrīṃ draupadīṃ viddhi yatkṛte kīcakā hatāḥ॥04-39-6॥

Nakula was the keeper of horses, and Sahadeva worked in the cowshed; know Sairandhrī as Draupadī, for whose sake the Kīcakas were slain. (04-39-6)

hanta te'haṁ samācakṣe daśa nāmāni yāni me। arjunaḥ phalguno jiṣṇuḥ kirīṭī śvetavāhanaḥ ॥ bībhatsur vijayaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ savyasācī dhanañjayaḥ ॥04-39-8॥

अर्जुनः फल्गुनो जिष्णुः कृष्णो बीभत्सुरेव च। धनञ्जयश्च केनासि प्रब्रूहि मम तत्त्वतः ॥ श्रुता मे तस्य वीरस्य केवला नामहेतवः ॥०४-३९-१०॥
arjunaḥ phalguno jiṣṇuḥ kṛṣṇo bībhatsureva ca। dhanañjayaśca kenāsi prabrūhi mama tattvataḥ ॥ śrutā me tasya vīrasya kevalā nāmahetavaḥ ॥04-39-10॥

Arjuna, Phalguna, Jiṣṇu, Kṛṣṇa, Bībhatsu, and Dhanañjaya—by what reason are you called by these names? Tell me truly. I have only heard the name-reasons of that hero. (04-39-10)

सर्वाञ्जनपदाञ्जित्वा वित्तमाच्छिद्य केवलम्। मध्ये धनस्य तिष्ठामि तेनाहुर्मां धनञ्जयम् ॥०४-३९-११॥
sarvāñ janapadāñ jitvā vittam ācchidya kevalam। madhye dhanasya tiṣṭhāmi tenāhur māṃ dhanañjayam॥04-39-11॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; (accusative plural masculine); जनपदान् (janapadān) - countries; regions; (accusative plural masculine); जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; आच्छिद्य (ācchidya) - having seized; having taken away; केवलम् (kevalam) - alone; exclusively; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; in the middle; धनस्य (dhanasya) - of wealth; (genitive singular neuter); तिष्ठामि (tiṣṭhāmi) - I stand; I remain; तेन (tena) - therefore; by that; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; they say; माम् (mām) - me; (accusative singular); धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya; conqueror of wealth; (Arjuna's epithet);]
(All countries having conquered, wealth having seized alone, in the midst of wealth I stand; therefore, they call me Dhanañjaya.)

अभिप्रयामि सङ्ग्रामे यदहं युद्धदुर्मदान्। नाजित्वा विनिवर्तामि तेन मां विजयं विदुः ॥०४-३९-१२॥
abhiprayāmi saṅgrāme yadahaṃ yuddhadurmadān। nājitvā vinivartāmi tena māṃ vijayaṃ viduḥ॥04-39-12॥
[अभिप्रयामि (abhiprayāmi) - I set forth; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; यत् (yat) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; युद्धदुर्मदान् (yuddhadurmadān) - battle-wild (those mad with pride in battle); न (na) - not; अजित्वा (ajitvā) - without conquering; विनिवर्तामि (vinivartāmi) - I return; तेन (tena) - therefore; माम् (mām) - me; विजयम् (vijayam) - victory; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(I set forth in battle that I, (against) the battle-wild, do not return without conquering; therefore me victory they know.)
When I go into battle, I do not turn back without defeating those who are mad with pride in battle; therefore, they know me as victory itself. (04-39-12)
श्वेताः काञ्चनसंनाहा रथे युज्यन्ति मे हयाः। सङ्ग्रामे युध्यमानस्य तेनाहं श्वेतवाहनः ॥०४-३९-१३॥
śvetāḥ kāñcanasaṁnāhā rathe yujyanti me hayāḥ। saṅgrāme yudhyamānasya tenāhaṁ śvetavāhanaḥ॥04-39-13॥
[श्वेताः (śvetāḥ) - white; काञ्चनसंनाहा (kāñcanasaṁnāhā) - having gold harness; रथे (rathe) - in the chariot; युज्यन्ति (yujyanti) - are yoked; मे (me) - my; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; युध्यमानस्य (yudhyamānasya) - of (me) fighting; तेन (tena) - by that; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; श्वेतवाहनः (śvetavāhanaḥ) - with white steeds;]
(White, gold-harnessed, in chariot, are yoked my horses. In battle, of (me) fighting, by that I (am called) 'with white steeds'.)
My horses, white and adorned with golden harness, are yoked to the chariot; in battle, since I fight thus, I am called 'white-steeded.' (04-39-13)
उत्तराभ्यां च पूर्वाभ्यां फल्गुनीभ्यामहं दिवा। जातो हिमवतः पृष्ठे तेन मां फल्गुनं विदुः ॥०४-३९-१४॥
uttarābhyām ca pūrvābhyām phalgunībhyām ahaṃ divā। jāto himavataḥ pṛṣṭhe tena māṃ phalgunaṃ viduḥ॥04-39-14॥
[उत्तराभ्यां (uttarābhyām) - by the two Uttarā-phalgunī (constellations); च (ca) - and; पूर्वाभ्यां (pūrvābhyām) - by the two Pūrvā-phalgunī (constellations); फल्गुनीभ्याम् (phalgunībhyām) - by the Phalgunī stars; अहम् (aham) - I; दिवा (divā) - by day; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - of Himavat (Himalaya); पृष्ठे (pṛṣṭhe) - on the back (ridge, slopes); तेन (tena) - therefore; माम् (mām) - me; फल्गुनम् (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (by this name); विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(By the two Uttarā and the two Pūrvā Phalgunī (constellations), by day, I was born on the ridge of Himavat; therefore, they know me as Phalguna.)
Because I was born by day under the Uttarā and Pūrvā Phalgunī stars on the slopes of the Himalaya, therefore I am known as Phalguna. (04-39-14)
पुरा शक्रेण मे दत्तं युध्यतो दानवर्षभैः। किरीटं मूर्ध्नि सूर्याभं तेन माहुः किरीटिनम् ॥०४-३९-१५॥
purā śakreṇa me dattaṃ yudhyato dānavarṣabhaiḥ। kirīṭaṃ mūrdhni sūryābhaṃ tena māhuḥ kirīṭinam॥04-39-15॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra (Indra); मे (me) - to me; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given; युध्यतः (yudhyataḥ) - while fighting; दानवर्षभैः (dānavarṣabhaiḥ) - with the foremost of Dānavas; किरीटं (kirīṭaṃ) - crown; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; सूर्याभं (sūryābham) - sun-like (in radiance); तेन (tena) - by that; माहुः (māhuḥ) - they called (me); किरीटिनम् (kirīṭinam) - the one with a crown;]
(Formerly, by Śakra to me was given, while fighting with the foremost of Dānavas, a crown, on the head, sun-like; by that, they called (me) the one with a crown.)
Formerly, Śakra (Indra) gave me a sun-like crown for my head while I was fighting the foremost of Dānavas; because of that, they called me 'the one with a crown.' (04-39-15)
न कुर्यां कर्म बीभत्सं युध्यमानः कथञ्चन। तेन देवमनुष्येषु बीभत्सुरिति मां विदुः ॥०४-३९-१६॥
na kuryāṃ karma bībhatsaṃ yudhyamānaḥ kathaṃcana. tena devamanuṣyeṣu bībhatsuriti māṃ viduḥ ॥04-39-16॥
[न (na) - not; कुर्यां (kuryāṃ) - I should do; कर्म (karma) - action; बीभत्सं (bībhatsaṃ) - abhorrent; युध्यमानः (yudhyamānaḥ) - while fighting; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; तेन (tena) - by that; देवमनुष्येषु (devamanuṣyeṣu) - among gods and men; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (one who abhors or shuns wickedness); इति (iti) - thus; माम् (mām) - me; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(Not should I do abhorrent action while fighting in any way. By that, among gods and men, 'Bībhatsu', thus, me, they know.)
I should never perform any abhorrent deed while fighting. Therefore, among gods and men, they know me as 'Bībhatsu' (the one who shuns foul acts). (04-39-16)
उभौ मे दक्षिणौ पाणी गाण्डीवस्य विकर्षणे। तेन देवमनुष्येषु सव्यसाचीति मां विदुः ॥०४-३९-१७॥
ubhau me dakṣiṇau pāṇī gāṇḍīvasya vikarṣaṇe। tena deva-manuṣyeṣu savyasācīti māṃ viduḥ॥04-39-17॥
[उभौ (ubhau) - both; मे (me) - my; दक्षिणौ (dakṣiṇau) - right (hands); पाणी (pāṇī) - hands; गाण्डीवस्य (gāṇḍīvasya) - of Gāṇḍīva (the bow); विकर्षणे (vikarṣaṇe) - in drawing (the bow); तेन (tena) - by that; देवमनुष्येषु (deva-manuṣyeṣu) - among gods and men; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - ambidextrous (one able to use both hands equally); इति (iti) - thus; मां (māṃ) - me; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(Both my right hands in drawing Gāṇḍīva by that among gods and men as 'Savyasācī' thus me know.)
Among gods and men, because both my hands are right hands for drawing the Gāṇḍīva bow, they therefore know me as 'Savyasācī', the ambidextrous one. (04-39-17)
पृथिव्यां चतुरन्तायां वर्णो मे दुर्लभः समः। करोमि कर्म शुक्लं च तेन मामर्जुनं विदुः ॥०४-३९-१८॥
pṛthivyāṃ caturantāyāṃ varṇo me durlabhaḥ samaḥ। karomi karma śuklaṃ ca tena mām arjunaṃ viduḥ॥04-39-18॥
[पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on earth; चतुरन्तायां (caturantāyām) - with four ends; extending in four directions; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - caste; color; मे (me) - my; दुर्लभः (durlabhaḥ) - rare; समः (samaḥ) - equal; करोमि (karomi) - I do; कर्म (karma) - deed; action; शुक्लं (śuklaṃ) - pure; white; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by that; माम् (mām) - me; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; pure; white; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(On earth, extending in four directions, my caste equal (to others) is rare. I do pure action, and by that they know me as 'Arjuna'.)
On the earth extending to four quarters, it is rare for there to be an equal to my caste; I perform pure deeds, and thus they know me as 'Arjuna'. (04-39-18)
अहं दुरापो दुर्धर्षो दमनः पाकशासनिः। तेन देवमनुष्येषु जिष्णुनामास्मि विश्रुतः ॥०४-३९-१९॥
ahaṁ durāpo durdharṣo damanaḥ pākaśāsaniḥ। tena devamanuṣyeṣu jiṣṇunāmāsmi viśrutaḥ॥04-39-19॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; दुरापः (durāpaḥ) - difficult to approach; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - difficult to overcome; दमनः (damanaḥ) - subduer; पाकशासनिः (pākaśāsaniḥ) - Pākaśāsani (epithet of Indra); तेन (tena) - by that; देवमनुष्येषु (devamanuṣyeṣu) - among gods and men; जिष्णु-नाम (jiṣṇu-nāma) - with the name Jishnu (the victorious); अस्मि (asmi) - I am; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - celebrated;]
(I, difficult to approach, difficult to overcome, subduer, Pākaśāsani; by that among gods and men with the name Jishnu I am celebrated.)
I am difficult to approach, hard to overcome, a subduer, known as Pākaśāsani. By that, among gods and men, I am celebrated as Jishnu, the victorious. (04-39-19)
कृष्ण इत्येव दशमं नाम चक्रे पिता मम। कृष्णावदातस्य सतः प्रियत्वाद्बालकस्य वै ॥०४-३९-२०॥
kṛṣṇa ityeva daśamaṁ nāma cakre pitā mama। kṛṣṇāvadātasya sataḥ priyatvād bālakasya vai ॥04-39-20॥
[कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; (name); इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - only; दशमं (daśamam) - tenth; नाम (nāma) - name; (noun); चक्रे (cakre) - (he) made; पिता (pitā) - father; (subject); मम (mama) - my; (of me); कृष्णावदातस्य (kṛṣṇāvadātasya) - of him who is fair or bright like Kṛṣṇa; (genitive); सतः (sataḥ) - existing; of (the boy); प्रियत्वात् (priyatvāt) - due to dearness; (from priya, dear); बालकस्य (bālakasya) - of the boy; (genitive); वै (vai) - indeed; (emphatic);]
(Kṛṣṇa thus only the tenth name made father my. Of the one being like Kṛṣṇa, due to dearness, of the boy indeed.)
My father made the tenth name as “Kṛṣṇa”, indeed, for the boy who was fair like Kṛṣṇa, out of affection. (04-39-20)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः पार्थं स वैराटिरभ्यवादयदन्तिकात्। अहं भूमिञ्जयो नाम नाम्नाहमपि चोत्तरः ॥०४-३९-२१॥
tataḥ pārthaṃ sa vairāṭir abhyavādayad antikāt। ahaṃ bhūmiñ jayo nāma nāmnāham api cottaraḥ ॥04-39-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); स (sa) - he; वैराटिः (vairāṭiḥ) - the son of Virāṭa; अभ्यवादयत् (abhyavādayat) - saluted; greeted; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from nearby; from proximity; अहम् (aham) - I; भूमिन् (bhūmin) - earth-lord; prince; जयः (jayaḥ) - Jaya (name); नाम (nāma) - named; called; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; अहम् अपि (aham api) - I also; च (ca) - and; उत्तरः (uttaraḥ) - Uttara (proper name);]
(Then Pārtha, he, the son of Virāṭa, greeted from nearby. I, the earth-lord, Jaya by name, by name I also am Uttara.)
Then the son of Virāṭa approached Pārtha and greeted him from close by, saying, "I am the prince of the land, named Jaya; I am also called Uttara." (04-39-21)
दिष्ट्या त्वां पार्थ पश्यामि स्वागतं ते धनञ्जय। लोहिताक्ष महाबाहो नागराजकरोपम ॥ यदज्ञानादवोचं त्वां क्षन्तुमर्हसि तन्मम ॥०४-३९-२२॥
diṣṭyā tvāṁ pārtha paśyāmi svāgataṁ te dhanañjaya। lohitākṣa mahābāho nāgarājakaropama ॥ yad ajñānād avocaṁ tvāṁ kṣantum arhasi tan mama ॥04-39-22॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by divine will; त्वाम् (tvām) - you (accusative singular); पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; स्वागतं (svāgatam) - welcome; ते (te) - to you; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya (Arjuna); लोहिताक्ष (lohitākṣa) - red-eyed; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - mighty-armed; नागराजकरोपम (nāgarājakaropama) - like the hand of the king of serpents; यत् (yat) - which; अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - out of ignorance; अवोचम् (avocam) - I spoke; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - of me;]
(By fortune I see you, O son of Pritha; welcome to you, O Dhananjaya, red-eyed, mighty-armed, like the hand of the king of serpents. Which out of ignorance I spoke to you, you ought to forgive that of me.)
By fortune I see you, O Partha; welcome to you, O Dhananjaya, red-eyed, mighty-armed, like the hand of the king of serpents. Whatever I spoke to you out of ignorance, please forgive that of mine. (04-39-22)
यतस्त्वया कृतं पूर्वं विचित्रं कर्म दुष्करम्। अतो भयं व्यतीतं मे प्रीतिश्च परमा त्वयि ॥०४-३९-२३॥
yatastvayā kṛtaṃ pūrvaṃ vicitraṃ karma duṣkaram। ato bhayaṃ vyatītaṃ me prītiśca paramā tvayi ॥04-39-23॥
[यतः (yataḥ) - because; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; विचित्रं (vicitraṃ) - wonderful; कर्म (karma) - action; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult to do; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; व्यतीतं (vyatītaṃ) - has passed; मे (me) - for me; प्रीतिश्च (prītiśca) - and affection; परमा (paramā) - supreme; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you;]
(Because by you a wonderful action, difficult to do, was done before, therefore fear has passed for me and supreme affection is in you.)
Because of the wonderful and difficult deed you performed earlier, therefore my fear has passed and I feel the utmost affection toward you. (04-39-23)
