(Having mounted the great chariot, O hero, with the charioteer by me, which army division will you go to, having been told? I will go (there) by you.)
O hero, having mounted the great chariot with me as your charioteer, to which division of the army will you go when I am told? I will go wherever directed by you. (04-40-1)

prīto'smi puruṣavyāghra na bhayaṃ vidyate tava. sarvān nudāmi te śatrūn raṇe raṇaviśārada ॥04-40-2॥

(Pleased I am, O tiger among men, not fear exists for you. All I will drive away your enemies in battle, O expert in battle.)
I am pleased, O tiger among men; you need not fear anything. I will drive away all your enemies in battle, O expert in warfare. (04-40-2)
स्वस्थो भव महाबुद्धे पश्य मां शत्रुभिः सह। युध्यमानं विमर्देऽस्मिन्कुर्वाणं भैरवं महत् ॥०४-४०-३॥
svastho bhava mahābuddhe paśya māṃ śatrubhiḥ saha। yudhyamānaṃ vimarde'smin kurvāṇaṃ bhairavaṃ mahat ॥04-40-3॥

(Steady be O great intellect, see me with enemies together fighting in conflict in this performing terrifying great.)
Remain steady, O great intellect; behold me, together with the enemies, fighting in this conflict and performing a great, terrifying act. (04-40-3)
एतान्सर्वानुपासङ्गान्क्षिप्रं बध्नीहि मे रथे। एतं चाहर निस्त्रिंशं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् ॥ अहं वै कुरुभिर्योत्स्याम्यवजेष्यामि ते पशून् ॥०४-४०-४॥
etān sarvān upāsaṅgān kṣipraṃ badhnīhi me rathe। etaṃ ca āhara nistriṃśaṃ jātarūpapariṣkṛtam ॥ ahaṃ vai kurubhiḥ yotsyāmi avajeṣyāmi te paśūn ॥04-40-4॥

सङ्कल्पपक्षविक्षेपं बाहुप्राकारतोरणम्। त्रिदण्डतूणसम्बाधमनेकध्वजसङ्कुलम् ॥०४-४०-५॥
saṅkalpapakṣavikṣepaṃ bāhuprākāratoraṇam। tridaṇḍatūṇasambādhamanekadhvajasaṅkulam ॥04-40-5॥

(Will-side-spreading, arm-rampart-gateway; three-staff-quiver-crowded, many-banner-filled.)
Spreading the wings of intention, with arms as ramparts and gateways; crowded with triple staffs and quivers, filled with many banners. (04-40-5)
ज्याक्षेपणं क्रोधकृतं नेमीनिनददुन्दुभि। नगरं ते मया गुप्तं रथोपस्थं भविष्यति ॥०४-४०-६॥
jyākṣepaṇaṃ krodhakṛtaṃ nemīninadadundubhi. nagaraṃ te mayā guptaṃ rathopasthaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥04-40-6॥
[ज्याक्षेपणं (jyākṣepaṇam) - bow-string stretching; क्रोधकृतं (krodhakṛtam) - done in anger; नेमीनिनददुन्दुभि (nemīninadadundubhi) - with the drum sounding like the roaring of the chariot wheel; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - city; ते (te) - your; मया (mayā) - by me; गुप्तं (guptam) - protected; रथोपस्थं (rathopastham) - chariot seat; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Bow-string stretching, done in anger, with the drum sounding like roaring of the chariot wheel. City your by me protected, chariot seat will be.)
The stretching of the bowstring, done in anger and accompanied by the sound of drums like the rumble of chariot wheels. Your city will be protected by me; the seat of the chariot will be (so). (04-40-6)
अधिष्ठितो मया सङ्ख्ये रथो गाण्डीवधन्वना। अजेयः शत्रुसैन्यानां वैराटे व्येतु ते भयम् ॥०४-४०-७॥
adhiṣṭhito mayā saṅkhye ratho gāṇḍīvadhanvanā। ajeyaḥ śatrusainyānāṃ vairāṭe vyetu te bhayam॥04-40-7॥

Since the chariot, mounted by me in battle and bearing the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, is invincible to enemy armies in Virāṭa, let your fear be dispelled. (04-40-7)

bibhemi nāhameteṣāṃ jānāmi tvāṃ sthiraṃ yudhi। keśavenāpi saṅgrāme sākṣādindreṇa vā samam॥04-40-8॥

(I do not fear these; I know you are firm in battle. Even by Keśava in battle, or directly by Indra, (you are) equal.)
I am not afraid of these; I know you to be steadfast in battle. You are a match even for Keśava in battle, or for Indra himself. (04-40-8)
इदं तु चिन्तयन्नेव परिमुह्यामि केवलम्। निश्चयं चापि दुर्मेधा न गच्छामि कथञ्चन ॥०४-४०-९॥
idaṃ tu cintayanneva parimuhyāmi kevalam। niścayaṃ cāpi durmedhā na gacchāmi kathaṃcana॥04-40-9॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - considering; एव (eva) - only; परिमुह्यामि (parimuhyāmi) - I am utterly bewildered; केवलम् (kevalam) - entirely; निश्चयं (niścayam) - resolve; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; दुर्मेधा (durmedhā) - with poor intellect; न (na) - not; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I reach; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - by any means;]
(This but considering only, I am utterly bewildered entirely. Resolve and even, with poor intellect, not I reach by any means.)
But as I keep thinking about this, I am only entirely bewildered. With poor intellect, I am unable to reach any resolve by any means. (04-40-9)
एवं वीराङ्गरूपस्य लक्षणैरुचितस्य च। केन कर्मविपाकेन क्लीबत्वमिदमागतम् ॥०४-४०-१०॥
evaṃ vīrāṅgarūpasya lakṣaṇair ucitasya ca। kena karma-vipākena klībatvam idam āgatam ॥04-40-10॥

How has this impotence come to one who, with the form of a hero and fitting characteristics, thus? (04-40-10)
मन्ये त्वां क्लीबवेषेण चरन्तं शूलपाणिनम्। गन्धर्वराजप्रतिमं देवं वापि शतक्रतुम् ॥०४-४०-११॥
manye tvāṃ klībaveṣeṇa carantaṃ śūlapāṇinam। gandharvarājapratimaṃ devaṃ vāpi śatakratum॥04-40-11॥

bhrātur-niyogāj-jyeṣṭhasya saṃvatsaram-idaṃ vratam। carāmi brahmacaryaṃ vai satyam-etad-bravīmi te ॥04-40-12॥

नास्मि क्लीबो महाबाहो परवान्धर्मसंयुतः। समाप्तव्रतमुत्तीर्णं विद्धि मां त्वं नृपात्मज ॥०४-४०-१३॥
nāsmi klībo mahābāho paravān dharmasaṃyutaḥ। samāptavratam uttīrṇaṃ viddhi māṃ tvaṃ nṛpātmaja ॥04-40-13॥

(Not am I impotent, O mighty-armed, dependent upon others, endowed with dharma. One whose vow is completed, crossed over, know me, you, O prince.)
O mighty-armed prince, know me not to be an impotent or dependent man attached to others' will; I am one endowed with righteousness, who has completed his vow and crossed over. (04-40-13)

परमोऽनुग्रहो मेऽद्य यत्प्रतर्को न मे वृथा। न हीदृशाः क्लीबरूपा भवन्तीह नरोत्तमाः ॥०४-४०-१४॥
paramo'nugraho me'dya yatpratarko na me vṛthā। na hīdṛśāḥ klībarūpā bhavantīha narottamāḥ ॥04-40-14॥
[परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; अनुग्रःः (anugrahaḥ) - favor; मे (me) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; यत् (yat) - that; प्रतर्कः (pratarkaḥ) - logical consideration; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; इदृशाः (idṛśāḥ) - such; क्लीबरूपाः (klībarūpāḥ) - of unmanly form; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; इह (iha) - here; नरोत्तमाः (narottamāḥ) - best of men;]
(The supreme favor to me today is that my reasoning has not been in vain. For such, of unmanly form, do not become the best of men here.)
The greatest favor to me today is that my judgment has not been futile; for indeed, those of such unmanly nature are never the best of men here. (04-40-14)
सहायवानस्मि रणे युध्येयममरैरपि। साध्वसं तत्प्रनष्टं मे किं करोमि ब्रवीहि मे ॥०४-४०-१५॥
sahāyavān asmi raṇe yudhyeyam amarair api. sādhvasam tat pranaṣṭam me kiṃ karomi bravīhi me ॥04-40-15॥
[सहायवान् (sahāyavān) - having helpers; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; युध्येयम् (yudhyeyam) - I could fight; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - with immortals; अपि (api) - even; साध्वसम् (sādhvasam) - fear; तत् (tat) - that; प्रनष्टम् (pranaṣṭam) - destroyed; मे (me) - for me; किम् (kim) - what; करोमि (karomi) - shall I do; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(Having helpers, I am in battle; I could fight even with immortals. That fear is destroyed for me. What shall I do? Tell me.)
I have allies in battle and could fight even the immortals. That fear has been destroyed for me. What should I do? Tell me. (04-40-15)
अहं ते सङ्ग्रहीष्यामि हयाञ्शत्रुरथारुजः। शिक्षितो ह्यस्मि सारथ्ये तीर्थतः पुरुषर्षभ ॥०४-४०-१६॥
ahaṁ te saṅgrahīṣyāmi hayāñ śatrurathārujaḥ। śikṣito hy asmi sārathye tīrthataḥ puruṣarṣabha ॥04-40-16॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; ते (te) - for you; सङ्ग्रहीष्यामि (saṅgrahīṣyāmi) - will drive; (will assemble/hold/manage); हयान् (hayān) - horses; शत्रुरथारुजः (śatrurathārujaḥ) - enemy chariot conqueror; (one who breaks enemy chariots); शिक्षितः (śikṣitaḥ) - trained; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; सारथ्ये (sārathye) - in charioteering; तीर्थतः (tīrthataḥ) - from a master (by one skilled/at a sacred place); पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(I for you will drive the horses, O conqueror of enemy chariots; trained indeed I am in charioteering from a master, O best of men.)
O best of men, I will drive the horses for you, O conqueror of enemy chariots; for I am indeed trained in charioteering by a master. (04-40-16)
दारुको वासुदेवस्य यथा शक्रस्य मातलिः। तथा मां विद्धि सारथ्ये शिक्षितं नरपुङ्गव ॥०४-४०-१७॥
dāruko vāsudevasya yathā śakrasya mātaliḥ। tathā māṁ viddhi sārathye śikṣitaṁ narapuṅgava ॥04-40-17॥
[दारुकः (dārukaḥ) - Dāruka; (proper noun, charioteer of Kṛṣṇa); वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; (genitive singular, of Kṛṣṇa); यथा (yathā) - as; just as; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; (of Indra); मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; (proper noun, charioteer of Indra); तथा (tathā) - so; in that manner; माम् (mām) - me; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; understand; सारथ्ये (sārathye) - in charioteership; in the charioteer's role; शिक्षितम् (śikṣitam) - trained; instructed; नरपुङ्गव (narapuṅgava) - O best of men; (vocative, addressing a king or hero);]
(Dāruka of Vāsudeva, just as the Mātali of Śakra; so me know in charioteership trained, O best of men.)
Just as Dāruka is to Vāsudeva and Mātali is to Śakra, so too, O best of men, know me as one trained in the art of charioteering. (04-40-17)
यस्य याते न पश्यन्ति भूमौ प्राप्तं पदं पदम्। दक्षिणं यो धुरं युक्तः सुग्रीवसदृशो हयः ॥०४-४०-१८॥
yasya yāte na paśyanti bhūmau prāptaṃ padaṃ padam। dakṣiṇaṃ yo dhuraṃ yuktaḥ sugrīvasadṛśo hayaḥ ॥04-40-18॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; याते (yāte) - when gone; न (na) - not; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - they see; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - which has come; पदं (padaṃ) - foot; पदम् (padam) - step; दक्षिणं (dakṣiṇam) - the right; यः (yaḥ) - who; धुरं (dhuraṃ) - yoke; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - joined; सुग्रीवसदृशः (sugrīvasadṛśaḥ) - similar to Sugrīva; हयः (hayaḥ) - horse;]
(Of whom when gone not they see on the ground the step of the foot which has come; the right yoke joined, similar to Sugrīva, horse.)
The horse, yoked to the right, resembling Sugrīva, whose footsteps cannot be seen on the ground when he moves.
योऽयं धुरं धुर्यवरो वामं वहति शोभनः। तं मन्ये मेघपुष्पस्य जवेन सदृशं हयम् ॥०४-४०-१९॥
yo'yaṃ dhuraṃ dhuryavaro vāmaṃ vahati śobhanaḥ। taṃ manye meghapuṣpasya javena sadṛśaṃ hayam ॥04-40-19॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; धुरम् (dhuram) - yoke (the shaft); धुर्यवरः (dhuryavaraḥ) - excellent draught-animal; वामम् (vāmam) - left; वहति (vahati) - bears; शोभनः (śobhanaḥ) - beautiful; तम् (tam) - him (that one); मन्ये (manye) - I consider; मेघपुष्पस्य (meghapuṣpasya) - of Meghapushpa; जवेन (javena) - with speed; सदृशम् (sadṛśam) - equal; हयम् (hayam) - horse;]
(Who this yoke excellent-draught-animal left bears beautiful; him I consider of Meghapushpa with speed equal horse.)
This beautiful and excellent draught-horse who pulls the yoke to the left, I consider to be a horse equal in speed to Meghapushpa. (04-40-19)
योऽयं काञ्चनसंनाहः पार्ष्णिं वहति शोभनः। वामं सैन्यस्य मन्ये तं जवेन बलवत्तरम् ॥०४-४०-२०॥
yo'yaṃ kāñcanasaṃnāhaḥ pārṣṇiṃ vahati śobhanaḥ। vāmaṃ sainyasya manye taṃ javena balavattaram ॥04-40-20॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; काञ्चनसंनाहः (kāñcana-saṃnāhaḥ) - golden-armored; पार्ष्णिम् (pārṣṇim) - heel; वहति (vahati) - carries; शोभनः (śobhanaḥ) - splendid; वामम् (vāmam) - left; सैन्यस्य (sainyasya) - of the army; मन्ये (manye) - I think; तम् (tam) - him; जवेन (javena) - with speed; बलवत्तरम् (balavattaram) - more powerful;]
(Who this golden-armored (one), the heel carries, splendid; left of the army I think him, with speed more powerful.)
That splendid one in golden armor, who carries the heel, I think he is on the left of the army and is more powerful in speed. (04-40-20)
योऽयं वहति ते पार्ष्णिं दक्षिणामञ्चितोद्यतः। बलाहकादपि मतः स जवे वीर्यवत्तरः ॥०४-४०-२१॥
yo'yaṁ vahati te pārṣṇiṁ dakṣiṇāmañcitodyataḥ। balāhakād api mataḥ sa jave vīryavattaraḥ ॥04-40-21॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; वहति (vahati) - carries; ते (te) - your; पार्ष्णिम् (pārṣṇim) - heel; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - right; अञ्चितः (añcitaḥ) - bent; उद्यतः (udyataḥ) - raised; बलाहकात् (balāhakāt) - than a cloud; अपि (api) - even; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; सः (saḥ) - he; जवे (jave) - in speed; वीर्यवत्तरः (vīryavattaraḥ) - more powerful;]
(Who this carries your heel right bent raised; than a cloud even considered he in speed more powerful;)
He who carries your right heel raised and bent is considered, even compared to a cloud, more powerful in speed. (04-40-21)
त्वामेवायं रथो वोढुं सङ्ग्रामेऽर्हति धन्विनम्। त्वं चेमं रथमास्थाय योद्धुमर्हो मतो मम ॥०४-४०-२२॥
tvām evāyaṁ ratho voḍhuṁ saṅgrāme 'rhati dhanvinam। tvaṁ cemaṁ ratham āsthāya yoddhum arho mato mama ॥04-40-22॥
[त्वाम् (tvām) (tvām) - you; एव (eva) (eva) - alone; अयम् (ayam) (ayam) - this; रथः (rathaḥ) (rathaḥ) - chariot; वोढुम् (voḍhum) (voḍhum) - to bear; सङ्ग्रमे (saṅgrame) (saṅgrame) - in battle; अर्हति (arhati) (arhati) - is worthy; धन्विनम् (dhanvinam) (dhanvinam) - archer; त्वम् (tvam) (tvam) - you; च (ca) (ca) - and; इमम् (imam) (imam) - this; रथम् (ratham) (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) (āsthāya) - having mounted; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) (yoddhum) - to fight; अर्हः (arhaḥ) (arhaḥ) - are worthy; मतः (mataḥ) (mataḥ) - considered; मम (mama) (mama) - by me;]
(You alone this chariot to bear in battle is worthy of (the) archer; you and this chariot having mounted to fight are worthy considered by me.)
Only you are worthy to drive this chariot in battle for an archer; you, having mounted this chariot, are considered by me to be fit to fight. (04-40-22)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततो निर्मुच्य बाहुभ्यां वलयानि स वीर्यवान्। चित्रे दुन्दुभिसंनादे प्रत्यमुञ्चत्तले शुभे ॥०४-४०-२३॥
tato nirmucya bāhubhyāṃ valayāni sa vīryavān। citre dundubhi-saṃnāde prati amuñcat tale śubhe॥04-40-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निर्मुच्य (nirmucya) - having taken off; बाहुभ्यां (bāhubhyām) - from (his) arms; वलयानि (valayāni) - bracelets; स (sa) - he; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful; चित्रे (citre) - in the splendid; दुन्दुभिसंनादे (dundubhi-saṃnāde) - with the sound of a drum; प्रत्य् (prati) - towards; अमुन्चत् (amuñcat) - he released; तले (tale) - on the ground; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious;]
(Then, having taken off the bracelets from (his) arms, he, the powerful one, in the splendid drum-sound, towards (it), released (them) on the auspicious ground.)
Then, having removed the bracelets from his arms, the mighty one, with the splendid sound of the drum, placed them down on the auspicious ground. (04-40-23)
कृष्णान्भङ्गीमतः केशाञ्श्वेतेनोद्ग्रथ्य वाससा। अधिज्यं तरसा कृत्वा गाण्डीवं व्याक्षिपद्धनुः ॥०४-४०-२४॥
kṛṣṇān bhaṅgīmataḥ keśāñ śvetena udgrathya vāsasā | adhijyaṃ tarasā kṛtvā gāṇḍīvaṃ vyākṣipad dhanuḥ ॥04-40-24॥
[कृष्णान् (kṛṣṇān) - black; (hair); भङ्गीमतः (bhaṅgīmataḥ) - curved-formed; (with a bent shape); केशान् (keśān) - hair; श्वेतेन (śvetena) - with white; उद्ग्रथ्य (udgrathya) - having bound up; (having tied up); वाससा (vāsasā) - with cloth; अधिज्यं (adhijyam) - strung; (with bowstring on); तरसा (tarasā) - with force; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; गाण्डीवं (gāṇḍīvam) - Gandiva (the bow); व्याक्षिपत् (vyākṣipat) - drew back; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow;]
(Black, bent-form hair with the white (cloth) having bound up, strung with force having made Gandiva he drew back the bow.)
Having bound up his black, curling hair with a white cloth, he swiftly strung the Gandiva and drew back his bow. (04-40-24)
तस्य विक्षिप्यमाणस्य धनुषोऽभून्महास्वनः। यथा शैलस्य महतः शैलेनैवाभिजघ्नुषः ॥०४-४०-२५॥
tasya vikṣipyamāṇasya dhanuṣo'bhūnmahāsvanaḥ। yathā śailasya mahataḥ śailenaivābhijaghnuṣaḥ॥04-40-25॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of his; विक्षिप्यमाणस्य (vikṣipyamāṇasya) - being drawn; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; महास्वनः (mahāsvanaḥ) - great sound; यथा (yathā) - as; शैलस्य (śailasya) - of a mountain; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; शैलेनैव (śailena eva) - by a (another) mountain itself; अभिजघ्नुषः (abhijaghnuṣaḥ) - of one striking;]
(Of his being drawn bow arose great sound, as of a great mountain (when) struck by a mountain itself by one striking.)
As his bow was being drawn, a great sound arose, like that of a great mountain struck by another mountain by one who strikes. (04-40-25)
सनिर्घाताभवद्भूमिर्दिक्षु वायुर्ववौ भृशम्। भ्रान्तद्विजं खं तदासीत्प्रकम्पितमहाद्रुमम् ॥०४-४०-२६॥
sanirghātābhavadbhūmirdikṣu vāyurvavau bhṛśam। bhrāntadvijaṃ khaṃ tadāsītprakampitamahādrumam॥04-40-26॥
[सनिर्घात (sanirghāta) - with thunder; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the quarters; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; ववौ (vavau) - blew; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - strongly; भ्रान्तद्विजम् (bhrāntadvijam) - with agitated birds; खम् (kham) - the sky; तदा (tadā) - then; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; प्रकम्पित (prakampita) - trembling; महाद्रुमम् (mahādrumam) - with great trees;]
(With thunder, the earth became; in the quarters, the wind blew strongly. With agitated birds, the sky then was trembling with great trees.)
The earth shook with thunder, the wind blew forcefully in all directions, the sky filled with agitated birds, and the great trees trembled. (04-40-26)
तं शब्दं कुरवोऽजानन्विस्फोटमशनेरिव। यदर्जुनो धनुःश्रेष्ठं बाहुभ्यामाक्षिपद्रथे ॥०४-४०-२७॥
taṁ śabdaṁ kuravo'jānan visphoṭam aśanera iva। yad arjuno dhanuḥ-śreṣṭhaṁ bāhubhyām ākṣipad rathe॥04-40-27॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; शब्दं (śabdam) - sound; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kuru warriors; अजानन् (ajānan) - did not know; विस्फोटम् (visphoṭam) - explosion; अशनेः (aśaneḥ) - of thunderbolt; इव (iva) - like; यत् (yat) - when; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; धनुःश्रेष्ठम् (dhanuḥ-śreṣṭham) - the excellent bow; बाहुभ्याम् (bāhubhyām) - with (his) arms; आक्षिपत् (ākṣipat) - twanged (drew back forcefully); रथे (rathe) - on (his) chariot;]
(That sound the Kuru warriors did not know, like the explosion of a thunderbolt, when Arjuna with his arms twanged the excellent bow on the chariot.)
The Kuru warriors did not recognize that sound, like the explosion of a thunderbolt, when Arjuna drew back his excellent bow with his arms on the chariot. (04-40-27)
