uttaraṃ sārathiṃ kṛtvā śamīṃ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam। āyudhaṃ sarvam ādāya tataḥ prāyād dhanañjayaḥ ॥04-41-1॥

(Uttara charioteer having made, śamī tree having circumambulated to the right, weapons all having taken, then set forth Dhanañjaya.)
Having appointed Uttara as the charioteer, performed circumambulation of the śamī tree to the right, and collected all the weapons, then Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) set out. (04-41-1)
ध्वजं सिंहं रथात्तस्मादपनीय महारथः। प्रणिधाय शमीमूले प्रायादुत्तरसारथिः ॥०४-४१-२॥
dhvajaṃ siṃhaṃ rathāt tasmād apanīya mahārathaḥ। praṇidhāya śamīmūle prāyād uttarasārathiḥ ॥04-41-2॥
[ध्वजं (dhvajaṃ) - banner; सिंहं (siṃhaṃ) - lion; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; अपनीय (apanīya) - having removed; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great charioteer; प्रणिधाय (praṇidhāya) - having laid down; शमीमूले (śamīmūle) - at the root of the śamī tree; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; उत्तरसारथिः (uttarasārathiḥ) - Uttarasārathi (proper noun, name of a charioteer);]

Having removed the lion-banner from that chariot, the great charioteer Uttarasārathi laid it down at the root of the śamī tree and departed. (04-41-2)
दैवीं मायां रथे युक्त्वा विहितां विश्वकर्मणा। काञ्चनं सिंहलाङ्गूलं ध्वजं वानरलक्षणम् ॥०४-४१-३॥
daivīṃ māyāṃ rathe yuktvā vihitāṃ viśvakarmaṇā। kāñcanaṃ siṃhalāṅgūlaṃ dhvajaṃ vānaralakṣaṇam ॥04-41-3॥
[दैवीं (daivīm) - divine; मायां (māyām) - illusion; रथे (rathe) - on the chariot; युक्त्वा (yuktvā) - having yoked; विहितां (vihitām) - prepared; विश्वकर्मणा (viśvakarmaṇā) - by Viśvakarman; काञ्चनं (kāñcanam) - golden; सिंहलाङ्गूलं (siṃhalāṅgūlam) - with a lion's tail; ध्वजं (dhvajam) - banner; वानरलक्षणम् (vānaralakṣaṇam) - having the sign of a monkey;]

Having attached (through) divine illusion to the chariot—prepared by Viśvakarman—a golden banner with a lion's tail, marked with the sign of a monkey. (04-41-3)
मनसा चिन्तयामास प्रसादं पावकस्य च। स च तच्चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा ध्वजे भूतान्यचोदयत् ॥०४-४१-४॥
manasā cintayāmāsa prasādaṃ pāvakasya ca। sa ca taccintitaṃ jñātvā dhvaje bhūtāny acodayat॥04-41-4॥
[मनसा (manasā) - by the mind; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - he pondered; प्रसादं (prasādam) - favor; पावकस्य (pāvakasya) - of Pāvaka (Agni, the Fire-god); च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; चिन्तितं (cintitam) - thought; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; ध्वजे (dhvaje) - on the banner; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; अचोदयत् (acodayat) - he urged;]
(By the mind, he pondered the favor of Pāvaka, and he, knowing that thought, on the banner, beings he urged.)
He pondered in his mind the favor of Pāvaka (the Fire-god), and that deity, knowing his thought, urged the beings on the banner. (04-41-4)
सपताकं विचित्राङ्गं सोपासङ्गं महारथः। रथमास्थाय बीभत्सुः कौन्तेयः श्वेतवाहनः ॥०४-४१-५॥
sapatākaṃ vicitrāṅgaṃ sopāsaṅgaṃ mahārathaḥ। rathamāsthāya bībhatsuḥ kaunteyaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ ॥04-41-5॥
[सपताकम् (sapatākam) - with banners; विचित्राङ्गम् (vicitrāṅgam) - with variously decorated body; सोपासङ्गम् (sopāsaṅgam) - with side equipment; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having mounted; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; श्वेतवाहनः (śvetavāhanaḥ) - who has white steeds;]
(With banners, with a variously decorated body, with side equipment, the great chariot-warrior, having mounted the chariot, Bībhatsu, son of Kunti, who has white steeds.)
The great chariot-warrior Arjuna, the son of Kunti, known as Bībhatsu and whose steeds are white, after mounting his chariot adorned with banners and side equipment, (stood ready). (04-41-5)
बद्धासिः सतनुत्राणः प्रगृहीतशरासनः। ततः प्रायादुदीचीं स कपिप्रवरकेतनः ॥०४-४१-६॥
baddhāsiḥ satanutrāṇaḥ pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ। tataḥ prāyādudīcīṃ sa kapipravaraketanaḥ ॥04-41-6॥
[बद्धासिः (baddhāsiḥ) - with sword fastened; सतनुत्राणः (satanutrāṇaḥ) - with body armor; प्रगृहीतशरासनः (pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ) - with bow and arrows taken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - he went; उदीचीम् (udīcīm) - northward; सः (saḥ) - he; कपिप्रवरकेतनः (kapipravaraketanaḥ) - the one who has the foremost monkey as his standard;]
(With sword fastened, with body armor, with bow and arrows taken, then he went northward, he, the one who has the foremost monkey as his standard.)
With his sword fastened on, wearing body armor, and bow and arrows in hand, he then went northward, he who bears the foremost monkey as his banner. (04-41-6)
स्वनवन्तं महाशङ्खं बलवानरिमर्दनः। प्राधमद्बलमास्थाय द्विषतां लोमहर्षणम् ॥०४-४१-७॥
svanavantaṃ mahāśaṅkhaṃ balavānarimardanaḥ। prādhama dbalamāsthāya dviṣatāṃ lomaharṣaṇam ॥04-41-7॥
[स्वनवन्तं (svanavantam) - sounding; possessing sound; महाशङ्खं (mahāśaṅkham) - great conch; large conch; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; powerful; अरिमर्दनः (arimardanaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; प्राधमद् (prādhama) - chief; foremost; बलम् (balam) - army; strength; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having taken up; assuming; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising; causing horripilation;]
(The strong destroyer of enemies, having taken up the sounding great conch and the foremost army, (produced) a hair-raising (sensation) among the enemies.)
The powerful destroyer of enemies, assuming command of the resounding great conch and the chief force, caused horror among his foes. (04-41-7)
ततस्ते जवना धुर्या जानुभ्यामगमन्महीम्। उत्तरश्चापि सन्त्रस्तो रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् ॥०४-४१-८॥
tataste javanā dhuryā jānubhyāmagamamnahīm। uttaraścāpi santrasto rathopastha upāviśat ॥04-41-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; जवना (javanā) - swift; धुर्याः (dhuryāḥ) - horses; जानुभ्याम् (jānubhyām) - with knees; अगमन् (agaman) - reached; महीम् (mahīm) - earth; उत्तरः (uttaraḥ) - Uttara; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सन्त्रस्तः (santrastaḥ) - afraid; रथोपस्थे (rathopasthe) - in the chariot-seat; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down;]
(Then they, the swift horses, reached the earth with their knees. Uttara also, being afraid, sat in the chariot-seat.)
Then the swift horses touched the ground with their knees, and Uttara, frightened, sat down in the chariot-seat. (04-41-8)
संस्थाप्य चाश्वान्कौन्तेयः समुद्यम्य च रश्मिभिः। उत्तरं च परिष्वज्य समाश्वासयदर्जुनः ॥०४-४१-९॥
saṁsthāpya ca aśvān kaunteyaḥ samudyamya ca raśmibhiḥ। uttaraṁ ca pariṣvajya samāśvāsayad arjunaḥ ॥04-41-9॥
[संस्थाप्य (saṁsthāpya) - having caused to stand; च (ca) - and; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; समुद्यम्य (samudyamya) - having taken up; च (ca) - and; रश्मिभिः (raśmibhiḥ) - by the reins; उत्तरं (uttaram) - Uttara (proper noun); च (ca) - and; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; समाश्वासयत् (samāśvāsayat) - comforted; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna;]
(Having caused the horses to stand and having taken up the reins, Kaunteya and, having embraced Uttara, Arjuna comforted him.)
Kaunteya (Arjuna), having stopped the horses and taken up the reins, embraced Uttara and comforted him. (04-41-9)
मा भैस्त्वं राजपुत्राग्र्य क्षत्रियोऽसि परन्तप। कथं पुरुषशार्दूल शत्रुमध्ये विषीदसि ॥०४-४१-१०॥
mā bhais tvaṁ rājaputrāgrya kṣatriyo ‘si parantapa। kathaṁ puruṣaśārdūla śatrumadhye viṣīdasi ॥04-41-10॥
[मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhais) - fear; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; राजपुत्राग्र्य (rājaputrāgrya) - foremost among princes; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - Kṣatriya; असि (asi) - are; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes; कथम् (katham) - how; पुरुषशार्दूल (puruṣaśārdūla) - tiger among men; शत्रुमध्ये (śatrumadhye) - in the midst of enemies; विषीदसि (viṣīdasi) - do you despair;]
(Do not fear, you foremost among princes, you are a Kṣatriya, scorcher of foes. How, tiger among men, do you despair in the midst of enemies?)
Do not be afraid, O best among princes, you are a Kṣatriya, destroyer of foes. How can you, tiger among men, become dejected in the midst of enemies? (04-41-10)
श्रुतास्ते शङ्खशब्दाश्च भेरीशब्दाश्च पुष्कलाः। कुञ्जराणां च नदतां व्यूढानीकेषु तिष्ठताम् ॥०४-४१-११॥
śrutās te śaṅkhaśabdāś ca bherīśabdāś ca puṣkalāḥ। kuñjarāṇāṃ ca nadatāṃ vyūḍhānīkeṣu tiṣṭhatām ॥04-41-11॥
[श्रुताः (śrutāḥ) - heard; ते (te) - those; शङ्खशब्दाः (śaṅkhaśabdāḥ) - conch sounds; च (ca) - and; भेरीशब्दाः (bherīśabdāḥ) - drum sounds; च (ca) - and; पुष्कलाः (puṣkalāḥ) - abundant; कुञ्जराणां (kuñjarāṇām) - of elephants; च (ca) - and; नदताम् (nadatām) - roaring; व्यूढानीकेषु (vyūḍhānīkeṣu) - in arrayed troops; तिष्ठताम् (tiṣṭhatām) - standing;]
(Those conch sounds and drum sounds, abundant, of the roaring elephants standing in arrayed troops, have been heard.)
The abundant sounds of conches and drums, and the roars of the elephants standing in arrayed troops, were heard. (04-41-11)
स त्वं कथमिहानेन शङ्खशब्देन भीषितः। विषण्णरूपो वित्रस्तः पुरुषः प्राकृतो यथा ॥०४-४१-१२॥
sa tvaṃ katham ihānena śaṅkhaśabdena bhīṣitaḥ। viṣaṇṇarūpo vitrastaḥ puruṣaḥ prākṛto yathā॥04-41-12॥
[स (sa) - he; but; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कथम् (katham) - how; इह (iha) - here; अनेन (anena) - by this; शङ्खशब्देन (śaṅkhaśabdena) - by the sound of the conch; भीषितः (bhīṣitaḥ) - frightened; विषण्णरूपः (viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ) - with dejected appearance; वित्रस्तः (vitrastaḥ) - terrified; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - person; प्राकृतः (prākṛtaḥ) - ordinary; natural; यथा (yathā) - like; as;]
(He, you, how here by this conch sound, frightened, with dejected appearance, terrified, person, ordinary as.)
So you, how is it that here, frightened by this conch sound, taking on a dejected appearance and terrified, are behaving like an ordinary man? (04-41-12)

श्रुता मे शङ्खशब्दाश्च भेरीशब्दाश्च पुष्कलाः। कुञ्जराणां च निनदा व्यूढानीकेषु तिष्ठताम् ॥०४-४१-१३॥
śrutā me śaṅkhaśabdāś ca bherīśabdāś ca puṣkalāḥ. kuñjarāṇāṃ ca ninadā vyūḍhānīkeṣu tiṣṭhatām ॥04-41-13॥
[श्रुता (śrutā) - heard; मे (me) - by me; शङ्खशब्दाः (śaṅkhaśabdāḥ) - conch sounds; च (ca) - and; भेरीशब्दाः (bherīśabdāḥ) - drum sounds; च (ca) - and; पुष्कलाः (puṣkalāḥ) - abundant; कुञ्जराणाम् (kuñjarāṇām) - of elephants; च (ca) - and; निनदाः (ninadāḥ) - trumpetings; व्यूढानीकेषु (vyūḍhānīkeṣu) - in the arrayed troops; तिष्ठताम् (tiṣṭhatām) - of those standing;]
(Heard by me are conch sounds and drum sounds abundant, and of elephants also trumpetings in the arrayed troops of those standing.)
I have heard the abundant sounds of conches and drums, and also the trumpetings of elephants among the arrayed troops of those standing. (04-41-13)
नैवंविधः शङ्खशब्दः पुरा जातु मया श्रुतः। ध्वजस्य चापि रूपं मे दृष्टपूर्वं न हीदृशम् ॥ धनुषश्चैव निर्घोषः श्रुतपूर्वो न मे क्वचित् ॥०४-४१-१४॥
naivaṁvidhaḥ śaṅkhaśabdaḥ purā jātu mayā śrutaḥ। dhvajasya cāpi rūpaṁ me dṛṣṭapūrvaṁ na hīdṛśam ॥ dhanuṣaścaiva nirghoṣaḥ śrutapūrvo na me kvacit ॥04-41-14॥
[नैवंविधः (naivaṁvidhaḥ) - not such as this; शङ्खशब्दः (śaṅkhaśabdaḥ) - conch-sound; पुरा (purā) - formerly; जातु (jātu) - ever; मया (mayā) - by me; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; ध्वजस्य (dhvajasya) - of the banner; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; रूपं (rūpaṁ) - form; मे (me) - by me; दृष्टपूर्वं (dṛṣṭapūrvaṁ) - seen before; न (na) - not; हीदृशम् (hīdṛśam) - such as this; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; निर्घोषः (nirghoṣaḥ) - roar; श्रुतपूर्वः (śrutapūrvaḥ) - heard before; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; क्वचित् (kvacit) - ever;]
(Not such as this conch-sound formerly ever by me heard. Of the banner also the form by me seen before not such as this. Of the bow also the roar heard before not by me ever.)
I have never before heard a conch sound like this. Nor have I ever seen such a banner form. Nor have I ever heard such a roar of a bow anywhere before. (04-41-14)
अस्य शङ्खस्य शब्देन धनुषो निस्वनेन च। रथस्य च निनादेन मनो मुह्यति मे भृशम् ॥०४-४१-१५॥
asya śaṅkhasya śabdena dhanuṣo nisvanena ca। rathasya ca ninādena mano muhyati me bhṛśam ॥04-41-15॥
[अस्य (asya) - of this; शङ्खस्य (śaṅkhasya) - of the conch; शब्देन (śabdena) - by the sound; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; निस्वनेन (nisvanena) - by the twang; च (ca) - and; रथस्य (rathasya) - of the chariot; च (ca) - and; निनादेन (ninādena) - by the rumbling; मनो (mano) - mind; मुह्यति (muhyati) - is bewildered; मे (me) - my; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(By the sound of this conch, by the twang of the bow, and by the rumbling of the chariot, my mind is greatly bewildered.)
The sound of this conch, the twang of the bow, and the rumbling of the chariot greatly confound my mind. (04-41-15)
व्याकुलाश्च दिशः सर्वा हृदयं व्यथतीव मे। ध्वजेन पिहिताः सर्वा दिशो न प्रतिभान्ति मे ॥ गाण्डीवस्य च शब्देन कर्णौ मे बधिरीकृतौ ॥०४-४१-१६॥
vyākulāś ca diśaḥ sarvā hṛdayaṃ vyathatīva me। dhvajena pihitāḥ sarvā diśo na pratibhānti me ॥ gāṇḍīvasya ca śabdena karṇau me badhirīkṛtau ॥04-41-16॥
[व्याकुलाः (vyākulāḥ) - distressed; च (ca) - and; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; व्यथते (vyathate) - is pained; इव (iva) - as if; मे (me) - my; ध्वजेन (dhvajena) - by the banner; पिहिताः (pihitāḥ) - covered; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; न (na) - not; प्रतिभान्ति (pratibhānti) - appear; मे (me) - to me; गाण्डीवस्य (gāṇḍīvasya) - of the Gāṇḍīva (bow); च (ca) - and; शब्देन (śabdena) - by the sound; कर्णौ (karṇau) - ears (dual); मे (me) - my; बधिरीकृतौ (badhirīkṛtau) - have been made deaf;]
(And distressed are all the directions; my heart is as if pained. By the banner covered all the directions do not appear to me. By the sound of Gāṇḍīva also, my ears have been made deaf.)
All the directions seem distressed, and my heart feels as if pained. All the directions are obscured from me by the banner, and I cannot see them. The sound of the Gāṇḍīva bow has made my ears deaf as well. (04-41-16)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

Arjuna said.
एकान्ते रथमास्थाय पद्भ्यां त्वमवपीडय। दृढं च रश्मीन्संयच्छ शङ्खं ध्मास्याम्यहं पुनः ॥०४-४१-१७॥
ekānte ratham āsthāya padbhyāṁ tvam avapīḍaya। dṛḍhaṁ ca raśmīn saṁyaccha śaṅkhaṁ dhmāsyāmy ahaṁ punaḥ ॥04-41-17॥
[एकान्ते (ekānte) - in seclusion; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having mounted; पद्भ्यां (padbhyām) - with (your) feet; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अवपीडय (avapīḍaya) - press down; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; च (ca) - and; रश्मीन् (raśmīn) - reins; संयच्छ (saṁyaccha) - hold; शङ्खम् (śaṅkham) - conch; ध्मास्यामि (dhmāsyāmi) - I shall blow; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(In seclusion, having mounted the chariot, with (your) feet you press down; and firmly hold the reins; the conch I shall blow again.)
Mount the chariot in seclusion, press down with your feet, and hold the reins firmly; I will blow the conch again. (04-41-17)

tasya śaṅkhasya śabdena rathanemi-svanena ca। gāṇḍīvasya ca ghoṣeṇa pṛthivī samakampata ॥04-41-18॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of his; शङ्खस्य (śaṅkhasya) - of the conch; शब्देन (śabdena) - by the sound; रथनेमिस्वनेन (rathanemi-svanena) - by the sound of the chariot's wheel; च (ca) - and; गाण्डीवस्य (gāṇḍīvasya) - of the Gandiva (bow); च (ca) - and; घोषेण (ghoṣeṇa) - by the roar; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; समकम्पत (samakampata) - trembled; ॥०४-४१-१८॥ (॥04-41-18॥) - ;]

[यथा (yathā) - just as; रथस्य (rathasya) - of the chariot; निर्घोषः (nirghoṣaḥ) - sound; noise; यथा (yathā) - just as; शङ्खः (śaṅkhaḥ) - conch; उदीर्यते (udīryate) - is sounded; कम्पते (kampate) - trembles; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Just as the sound of the chariot, just as the conch is sounded, and just as the earth trembles, this (is) not other than Savyasācin.)
Just as the sound of the chariot, the blowing of the conch, and the trembling of the earth are seen, this is nothing other than Savyasācin (Arjuna). (04-41-19)
शस्त्राणि न प्रकाशन्ते न प्रहृष्यन्ति वाजिनः। अग्नयश्च न भासन्ते समिद्धास्तन्न शोभनम् ॥०४-४१-२०॥
śastrāṇi na prakāśante na prahṛṣyanti vājinaḥ। agnayaś ca na bhāsante samiddhās tan na śobhanam॥04-41-20॥
[शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; न (na) - not; प्रकाशन्ते (prakāśante) - shine; न (na) - not; प्रहृष्यन्ति (prahṛṣyanti) - are rejoicing; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - horses; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; भासन्ते (bhāsante) - shine; समिद्धाः (samiddhāḥ) - kindled; तत् (tat) - that; न (na) - not; शोभनम् (śobhanam) - auspicious;]
(Weapons do not shine, nor do the horses rejoice. The fires also, though kindled, do not shine; that is not auspicious.)
The weapons do not gleam, the horses are not joyful, even the kindled fires do not shine; this is not a good sign. (04-41-20)
प्रत्यादित्यं च नः सर्वे मृगा घोरप्रवादिनः। ध्वजेषु च निलीयन्ते वायसास्तन्न शोभनम् ॥ शकुनाश्चापसव्या नो वेदयन्ति महद्भयम् ॥०४-४१-२१॥
pratyādityaṃ ca naḥ sarve mṛgā ghorapravādinaḥ। dhvajeṣu ca nilīyante vāyasās tanna śobhanam॥ śakunāś cāpasavyā no vedayanti mahadbhayam॥04-41-21॥
[प्रत्यादित्यं (pratyādityaṃ) - towards the sun; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - to us; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मृगा (mṛgāḥ) - animals; घोरप्रवादिनः (ghorapravādinaḥ) - uttering fearful cries; ध्वजेषु (dhvajeṣu) - in (the) banners; च (ca) - and; निलीयन्ते (nilīyante) - are hiding; वायसाः (vāyasāḥ) - crows; तन् (tan) - that; न (na) - not; शोभनम् (śobhanam) - auspicious; शकुनाः (śakunāḥ) - birds (omens); च (ca) - and; अपसव्याः (apasavyāḥ) - moving to the left; नः (naḥ) - for us; वेदयन्ति (vedayanti) - indicate; महत् (mahat) - great; भयम् (bhayam) - danger;]
(Towards the sun and to us, all animals utter fearful cries; and crows are hiding in the banners, that is not auspicious. Birds also, moving to the left for us, indicate great danger.)
All the animals are crying out fearfully towards the sun and at us; crows are hiding in the banners, which is inauspicious. Birds flying to our left also foretell great danger. (04-41-21)
गोमायुरेष सेनाया रुवन्मध्येऽनुधावति। अनाहतश्च निष्क्रान्तो महद्वेदयते भयम् ॥ भवतां रोमकूपाणि प्रहृष्टान्युपलक्षये ॥०४-४१-२२॥
gomāyur eṣa senāyā ruvan madhye'nudhāvati। anāhataś ca niṣkrānto mahad vedayate bhayam ॥ bhavatāṃ romakūpāṇi prahṛṣṭāny upalakṣaye ॥04-41-22॥
[गोमायुः (gomāyuḥ) (gomāyuḥ) - jackal; एषः (eṣaḥ) (eṣaḥ) - this; सेनायाः (senāyāḥ) (senāyāḥ) - of the army; रुवन् (ruvan) (ruvan) - howling; मध्ये (madhye) (madhye) - in the middle; अनुधावति (anudhāvati) (anudhāvati) - runs after; अनाहतः (anāhataḥ) (anāhataḥ) - unstruck; च (ca) (ca) - and; निष्क्रान्तः (niṣkrāntaḥ) (niṣkrāntaḥ) - having gone out; महत् (mahat) (mahat) - great; वेदयते (vedayate) (vedayate) - feels; भयम् (bhayam) (bhayam) - fear; भवताम् (bhavatām) (bhavatām) - of you (pl.); रोमकूपाणि (romakūpāṇi) (romakūpāṇi) - hair pores; प्रहृष्टानि (prahṛṣṭāni) (prahṛṣṭāni) - thrilled; उपलक्षये (upalakṣaye) (upalakṣaye) - I observe;]
(The jackal, this, of the army, howling, in the middle, runs after. Unstruck and having gone out, great, feels, fear. Of you, hair pores, thrilled, I observe. (04-41-22))
This jackal is running after the army, howling in the midst. Unstruck and having come out, it feels great fear. I observe the hair on your body standing on end with joy. (04-41-22)
पराभूता च वः सेना न कश्चिद्योद्धुमिच्छति। विवर्णमुखभूयिष्ठाः सर्वे योधा विचेतसः ॥ गाः सम्प्रस्थाप्य तिष्ठामो व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः ॥०४-४१-२३॥
parābhūtā ca vaḥ senā na kaścid yoddhum icchati। vivarṇamukhabhūyiṣṭhāḥ sarve yodhā vicetasaḥ ॥ gāḥ samprasthāpya tiṣṭhāmo vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ॥04-41-23॥
[पराभूता (parābhūtā) - defeated; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - your; सेना (senā) - army; न (na) - not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; इच्छति (icchati) - wishes; विवर्णमुखभूयिष्ठाः (vivarṇamukhabhūyiṣṭhāḥ) - having mostly pale-faced; सर्वे (sarve) - all; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; विचेतसः (vicetasaḥ) - bewildered; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; सम्प्रस्थाप्य (samprasthāpya) - having sent away; तिष्ठामः (tiṣṭhāmaḥ) - let us stand; व्यूढानीकाः (vyūḍhānīkāḥ) - formed in battle array; प्रहारिणः (prahāriṇaḥ) - strikers;]
(Defeated and your army not anyone to fight wishes. Having mostly pale-faced all warriors bewildered. Cows having sent away, let us stand formed in battle array, strikers. (04-41-23))
Your army has been defeated, and nobody wishes to fight. All the warriors are bewildered, with mostly pale faces. Having sent the cows away, let us stand ready in battle formation, prepared to strike. (04-41-23)
