Kṛpa said.
सदैव तव राधेय युद्धे क्रूरतरा मतिः। नार्थानां प्रकृतिं वेत्थ नानुबन्धमवेक्षसे ॥०४-४४-१॥
sadāiva tava rādhēya yuddhē krūratara matiḥ। na arthānāṃ prakṛtiṃ vēttha na anubandham
avēkṣasē॥04-44-1॥
[सदैव (sadāiva) - always; तव (tava) - your; राधेय (rādhēya) - O son of Radha; युद्धे
(yuddhē) - in battle; क्रूरतरा (krūratara) - more cruel; मतिः (matiḥ) - intention; न (na) -
not; अर्थानां (arthānāṃ) - of purposes; प्रकृतिं (prakṛtim) - nature; वेत्थ (vēttha) - (you)
know; न (na) - not; अनुबन्धम् (anubandham) - the consequence; अवेक्षसे (avēkṣasē) - (you)
consider;]
(Always your intention, O son of Radha, in battle is more cruel. Not of purposes nature
(you) know, not the consequence (you) consider.)
O son of Radha, your intention in battle is always more cruel. You do not understand the
nature of things, nor do you consider the consequences. (04-44-1)
नया हि बहवः सन्ति शास्त्राण्याश्रित्य चिन्तिताः। तेषां युद्धं तु पापिष्ठं वेदयन्ति
पुराविदः ॥०४-४४-२॥
nayā hi bahavaḥ santi śāstrāṇy āśritya cintitāḥ। teṣāṃ yuddhaṃ tu pāpiṣṭhaṃ vedayanti
purāvidaḥ॥04-44-2॥
[नया (nayā) - by new (means); हि (hi) - indeed; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; सन्ति (santi) -
are; शास्त्राणि (śāstrāṇi) - treatises; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having relied on; चिन्तिताः
(cintitāḥ) - thought (of); तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; युद्धम् (yuddham) - war; तु (tu) - but;
पापिष्ठम् (pāpiṣṭham) - most sinful; वेदयन्ति (vedayanti) - declare; पुराविदः (purāvidaḥ) -
the knowers of old (the ancients);]
(By new means, indeed, many treatises are thought (of), having relied upon them; of
those, war indeed is declared most sinful by the knowers of old.)
Indeed, many new treatises, having been considered based on them, are declared by the
ancients to regard war as most sinful. (04-44-2)
देशकालेन संयुक्तं युद्धं विजयदं भवेत्। हीनकालं तदेवेह फलवन्न भवत्युत ॥ देशे काले च
विक्रान्तं कल्याणाय विधीयते ॥०४-४४-३॥
deśakālena saṃyuktaṃ yuddhaṃ vijayadaṃ bhavet। hīnakālaṃ tadeveha phalavan na bhavatyuta ॥
deśe kāle ca vikrāntaṃ kalyāṇāya vidhīyate ॥04-44-3॥
[देशकालेन (deśakālena) - by place and time; संयुक्तं (saṃyuktam) - joined; युद्धं
(yuddham) - battle; विजयदं (vijayadam) - yielding victory; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; हीनकालं
(hīnakālam) - with inappropriate time; तदेव (tadeva) - that very; इह (iha) - here; फलवत्
(phalavat) - fruitful; न (na) - not; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; उत (uta) - indeed; देशे
(deśe) - in place; काले (kāle) - in time; च (ca) - and; विक्रान्तं (vikrāntam) - bold
action; कल्याणाय (kalyāṇāya) - for welfare; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is instituted;]
(A battle joined with place and time may yield victory; that very (battle), here, with
inappropriate time, does not become fruitful indeed. In place and time, indeed bold action
is done for welfare. (04-44-3))
A battle conducted at the right place and time may lead to victory; however, that very
same battle, if fought at the wrong time, does not yield results here. Bold action, in
proper place and time, is always undertaken for welfare. (04-44-3)
आनुकूल्येन कार्याणामन्तरं संविधीयताम्। भारं हि रथकारस्य न व्यवस्यन्ति पण्डिताः ॥०४-४४-४॥
ānukūlyena kāryāṇām antaraṃ saṃvidhīyatām। bhāraṃ hi rathakārasya na vyavasyanti paṇḍitāḥ
॥04-44-4॥
[आनुकूल्येन (ānukūlyena) - with suitability; conformably; कार्याणाम् (kāryāṇām) - of
tasks; of actions; अन्तरं (antaraṃ) - difference; distinction; संविधीयताम् (saṃvidhīyatām) -
let be arranged; should be set; भारं (bhāraṃ) - burden; weight; हि (hi) - indeed; for;
रथकारस्य (rathakārasya) - of the chariot-maker; न (na) - not; व्यवस्यन्ति (vyavasyanti) -
they decide; they assign; पण्डिताः (paṇḍitāḥ) - the wise; sages;]
(With suitability, of tasks, the distinction should be arranged. The burden indeed of the
chariot-maker not they assign, the wise.)
Tasks should be arranged appropriately in accordance with their suitability; wise persons
do not assign the burden of a chariot-maker to others. (04-44-4)
परिचिन्त्य तु पार्थेन संनिपातो न नः क्षमः। एकः कुरूनभ्यरक्षदेकश्चाग्निमतर्पयत् ॥०४-४४-५॥
paricintya tu pārthena saṁnipāto na naḥ kṣamaḥ। ekaḥ kurūn abhyarakṣad ekaś cāgnim
atarpayat ॥04-44-5॥
[परिचिन्त्य (paricintya) - having considered;, तु (tu) - but;, पार्थेन (pārthena) - by
Pārtha (Arjuna);, संनिपातः (saṁnipātaḥ) - attack;, न (na) - not;, नः (naḥ) - to us;, क्षमः
(kṣamaḥ) - possible;, एकः (ekaḥ) - one;, कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus;, अभ्यरक्षत्
(abhyarakṣat) - protected;, एकः (ekaḥ) - one;, च (ca) - and;, अग्निम् (agnim) - fire;,
अतर्पयत् (atarpayat) - satisfied;,;]
(Having considered, but by Pārtha, attack not to us was possible. One protected the
Kurus, and one satisfied the fire. (04-44-5))
But, having considered, Pārtha (Arjuna) found that an attack was not possible for us. One
person protected the Kurus, and one (other) satisfied the fire. (04-44-5)
एकश्च पञ्च वर्षाणि ब्रह्मचर्यमधारयत्। एकः सुभद्रामारोप्य द्वैरथे कृष्णमाह्वयत् ॥
अस्मिन्नेव वने कृष्णो हृतां कृष्णामवाजयत् ॥०४-४४-६॥
ekaś ca pañca varṣāṇi brahmacaryam adhārayat। ekaḥ subhadrām āropya dvairathe kṛṣṇam
āhvayat॥ asminn eva vane kṛṣṇo hṛtāṃ kṛṣṇām avājayat॥ 04-44-6॥
[एकश्च (ekaś ca) - and one (person); पञ्च (pañca) - five; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years;
ब्रह्मचर्यमधारयत् (brahmacaryam adhārayat) - practiced celibacy; एकः (ekaḥ) - one (person);
सुभद्रामारोप्य (subhadrām āropya) - having placed Subhadrā (on the chariot); द्वैरथे
(dvairathe) - in chariot-combat; (lit. 'in a duel with chariots'); कृष्णमाह्वयत् (kṛṣṇam
āhvayat) - challenged Krishna; अस्मिन्नेव (asminn eva) - in this very (place); वने (vane) -
in the forest; कृष्णो (kṛṣṇo) - Krishna; हृतां (hṛtāṃ) - the abducted (one); कृष्णाम्
(kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); अवाजयत् (avājayat) - won back;]
(And one (person) for five years practiced celibacy. One, having placed Subhadrā,
challenged Krishna to chariot-combat. In this very forest, Krishna won back the abducted
Kṛṣṇā.)
One of them practiced celibacy for five years; one, carrying Subhadrā, challenged Krishna
to a duel on chariots; and here in this very forest, Krishna recovered the abducted
Draupadī. (04-44-6)
एकश्च पञ्च वर्षाणि शक्रादस्त्राण्यशिक्षत। एकः सांयमिनीं जित्वा कुरूणामकरोद्यशः ॥०४-४४-७॥
ekaś ca pañca varṣāṇi śakrād astrāṇy aśikṣata. ekaḥ sāṃyaminīṃ jitvā kurūṇām akarod yaśaḥ

[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; च (ca) - and; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; शक्रात्
(śakrāt) - from Śakra (Indra); अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - missiles; अशिक्षत (aśikṣata) - learned;
एकः (ekaḥ) - one; सांयमिनीम् (sāṃyaminīm) - Sāṃyamini (a city); जित्वा (jitvā) - having
conquered; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame;]
(One and five years from Śakra missiles learned. One Sāṃyamini having conquered of the
Kurus made fame.)
And one (of them) learned missiles from Śakra for five years; one, having conquered
Sāṃyamini, brought fame to the Kurus. (04-44-7)
एको गन्धर्वराजानं चित्रसेनमरिंदमः। विजिग्ये तरसा सङ्ख्ये सेनां चास्य सुदुर्जयाम् ॥०४-४४-८॥
eko gandharvarājānaṃ citrasenam ariṃdamaḥ। vijigye tarasā saṅkhye senāṃ cāsya
sudurjayām॥04-44-8॥
[एको (eko) - one; गन्धर्वराजानं (gandharvarājānam) - king of Gandharvas; चित्रसेनम्
(citrasenam) - Citraseṇa; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - subduer of enemies; विजिग्ये (vijigye) -
conquered; तरसा (tarasā) - by strength; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; सेनाम् (senām) -
army; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; सुदुर्जयाम् (sudurjayām) - very difficult to
conquer;]
(One subduer of enemies conquered the king of Gandharvas, Citraseṇa, by strength in
battle and his army very difficult to conquer.)
The subduer of enemies single-handedly conquered the king of the Gandharvas, Citraseṇa, by
strength in battle, along with his very difficult-to-defeat army. (04-44-8)
तथा निवातकवचाः कालखञ्जाश्च दानवाः। दैवतैरप्यवध्यास्ते एकेन युधि पातिताः ॥०४-४४-९॥
tathā nivātakavacāḥ kālakhañjāś ca dānavāḥ। daivatair api avadhyās te ekena yudhi
pātitāḥ॥04-44-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; निवातकवचाः (nivātakavacāḥ) - Nivātakavaca demons; कालखञ्जाः
(kālakhañjāḥ) - Kālakhañja demons; च (ca) - and; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas (demons); दैवतैः
(daivataiḥ) - by gods; अपि (api) - also; अवध्याः (avadhyāḥ) - invincible; ते (te) - they;
एकेन (ekena) - by one; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; पातिताः (pātitāḥ) - were laid low;]
(Thus the Nivātakavaca demons, Kālakhañja demons, and Dānavas, who were also invincible
by gods, they were laid low by one in battle.)
Thus the Nivātakavaca, Kālakhañja, and Dānava demons—invincible even to the gods—were all
defeated by one (hero) in battle. (04-44-9)
एकेन हि त्वया कर्ण किं नामेह कृतं पुरा। एकैकेन यथा तेषां भूमिपाला वशीकृताः ॥०४-४४-१०॥
ekena hi tvayā karṇa kiṃ nāma iha kṛtaṃ purā। ekaikena yathā teṣāṃ bhūmipālā
vaśīkṛtāḥ॥04-44-10॥
[एकेन (ekena) - by one; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कर्ण (karṇa) - O Karṇa;
किं (kiṃ) - what; नाम (nāma) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; कृतं (kṛtam) - has been done; पुरा
(purā) - before; एकैकेन (ekaikena) - by each one; यथा (yathā) - just as; तेषां (teṣām) - of
them; भूमिपाला (bhūmipālā) - kings; वशीकृताः (vaśīkṛtāḥ) - were subdued;]
(By one indeed by you, O Karṇa, what indeed here has been done before? By each one just
as of them the kings were subdued.)
O Karṇa, what indeed have you alone accomplished here before, such that, by each one of
them, the kings were subdued? (04-44-10)
इन्द्रोऽपि हि न पार्थेन संयुगे योद्धुमर्हति। यस्तेनाशंसते योद्धुं कर्तव्यं तस्य भेषजम्
॥०४-४४-११॥
indro'pi hi na pārthena saṁyuge yoddhum arhati. yas tenāśaṁsate yoddhuṁ kartavyaṁ tasya
bheṣajam ॥04-44-11॥
[इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; (the god Indra); अपि (api) - even; also; हि (hi) - indeed;
for; न (na) - not; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha; (by Arjuna, son of Pṛthā); संयुगे
(saṁyuge) - in battle; in conflict; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; अर्हति (arhati) - is
worthy; is able; यः (yaḥ) - he who; whoever; तेन (tena) - by him; by that; आशंसते (āśaṁsate)
- desires; wishes; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - must be done; is
to be performed; तस्य (tasya) - for him; of him; भेषजम् (bheṣajam) - remedy; antidote;]
(Even Indra indeed is not able to fight with Pārtha in battle. Whoever desires to fight
with him, for him a remedy must be applied.)
Even Indra himself is not capable of fighting with Pārtha in battle. Whoever wishes to
fight with him must be given a remedy. (04-44-11)
आशीविषस्य क्रुद्धस्य पाणिमुद्यम्य दक्षिणम्। अविमृश्य प्रदेशिन्या दंष्ट्रामादातुमिच्छसि
॥०४-४४-१२॥
āśīviṣasya kruddhasya pāṇim udyamya dakṣiṇam। avimṛśya pradeśinyā daṁṣṭrām ādātum
icchasi॥04-44-12॥
[आशीविषस्य (āśīviṣasya) - of a venomous serpent; क्रुद्धस्य (kruddhasya) - of one who is
angry; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having raised; दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - the
right; अविमृश्य (avimṛśya) - without considering; प्रदेशिन्या (pradeśinyā) - with the index
finger; दंष्ट्राम् (daṁṣṭrām) - fang; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to seize; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you
desire;]
(Of a venomous serpent, of one who is angry, hand having raised, the right, without
considering, with the index finger, fang to seize, you desire.)
You wish to seize the fang of an angry venomous serpent with your right hand raised and
your index finger, without considering (the consequences). (04-44-12)
अथ वा कुञ्जरं मत्तमेक एव चरन्वने। अनङ्कुशं समारुह्य नगरं गन्तुमिच्छसि ॥०४-४४-१३॥
atha vā kuñjaraṃ mattam eka eva caran vane। anaṅkuśaṃ samāruhya nagaraṃ gantum icchasi
॥04-44-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; कुञ्जरं (kuñjaraṃ) - elephant; मत्तम् (mattam) -
intoxicated; एकः (eka) - alone; एव (eva) - indeed; चरन् (caran) - roaming; वने (vane) - in
the forest; अनङ्कुशम् (anaṅkuśam) - without goad; समारुह्य (samāruhya) - having mounted;
नगरं (nagaraṃ) - city; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(Then or elephant intoxicated alone indeed roaming in the forest without goad having
mounted city to go you wish.)
Or else, do you wish to go to the city riding alone upon an intoxicated elephant, roaming
in the forest without a goad? (04-44-13)
समिद्धं पावकं वापि घृतमेदोवसाहुतम्। घृताक्तश्चीरवासास्त्वं मध्येनोत्तर्तुमिच्छसि
॥०४-४४-१४॥
samiddhaṃ pāvakaṃ vāpi ghṛta-medau-vasāhutam। ghṛtāktaścīra-vāsāstvam madhyena uttartum
icchasi॥04-44-14॥
[समिद्धम् (samiddham) - kindled; lighted; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; वा अपि (vā api) - or
even; घृतमेदः-उवस-आहुतम् (ghṛta-medaḥ-vasā-ahutam) - clarified butter, fat, flesh—offering;
घृताक्तः (ghṛtāktaḥ) - anointed with ghee; चीरवासाः (cīra-vāsāḥ) - wearing bark-cloth
garment; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मध्येना (madhyena) - by the middle; through the midst;
उत्तर्तुम् (uttartum) - to cross over; to pass; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(Kindled fire or even an offering of clarified butter, fat, flesh—one anointed with ghee,
wearing bark-cloth, you, by the middle, wish to cross.)
You, anointed with ghee and wearing bark cloth, desire to cross through the midst of the
kindled fire or even offerings of ghee, fat, and flesh. (04-44-14)
आत्मानं यः समुद्बध्य कण्ठे बद्ध्वा महाशिलाम्। समुद्रं प्रतरेद्दोर्भ्यां तत्र किं नाम
पौरुषम् ॥०४-४४-१५॥
ātmānaṃ yaḥ samudbad hya kaṇṭhe baddhvā mahāśilām। samudraṃ pratared dorbhyāṃ tatra kiṃ
nāma pauruṣam॥04-44-15॥
[आत्मानं (ātmānam) - the self; यः (yaḥ) - who; समुद्बध्य (samudbadhya) - having bound
together; कण्ठे (kaṇṭhe) - on the neck; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having fastened; महाशिलाम्
(mahāśilām) - a great stone; समुद्रं (samudram) - the ocean; प्रतरेत् (prataret) - would
cross; दोर्भ्यां (dorbhyām) - with (his) two arms; तत्र (tatra) - there; किं (kiṃ) - what;
नाम (nāma) - indeed; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - manliness;]
(The self who, having bound (himself) by the neck after fastening a great stone, would
cross the ocean with (his) two arms, what indeed (would be called) manliness there?)
If someone binds himself to a great stone at the neck, yet crosses the ocean by his own
two arms, what could possibly be called manliness in that?
अकृतास्त्रः कृतास्त्रं वै बलवन्तं सुदुर्बलः। तादृशं कर्ण यः पार्थं योद्धुमिच्छेत्स
दुर्मतिः ॥०४-४४-१६॥
akṛtāstraḥ kṛtāstraṃ vai balavantaṃ sudurbalaḥ। tādṛśaṃ karṇa yaḥ pārthaṃ yoddhum icchet
sa durmatiḥ॥04-44-16॥
[अकृतास्त्रः (akṛtāstraḥ) - who is untrained in weapons; कृतास्त्रं (kṛtāstram) - trained
in weapons; वै (vai) - indeed; बलवन्तं (balavantaṃ) - powerful; सुदुर्बलः (sudurbalaḥ) -
very weak; तादृशं (tādṛśam) - such; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna; यः (yaḥ) - who; पार्थं (pārtham) -
son of Pritha (Arjuna); योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; इच्छेत् (icchet) - should wish; स
(sa) - he; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - foolish;]
(Untrained in weapons, indeed extremely weak, (who wishes) to fight with Karna, who (is)
powerful and trained in weapons—such a one who should wish to fight with Partha, he is
foolish.)
One untrained in weapons and very weak who wishes to fight with Karna, who is powerful and
skilled in arms like Partha, is truly foolish. (04-44-16)
अस्माभिरेष निकृतो वर्षाणीह त्रयोदश। सिंहः पाशविनिर्मुक्तो न नः शेषं करिष्यति ॥०४-४४-१७॥
asmābhireṣa nikṛto varṣāṇīha trayodaśa। siṃhaḥ pāśavinirmukto na naḥ śeṣaṃ
kariṣyati॥04-44-17॥
[अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; निकृतः (nikṛtaḥ) - subdued; वर्षाणि
(varṣāṇi) - years; इह (iha) - here; त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - lion;
पाशविनिर्मुक्तः (pāśavinirmuktaḥ) - released from bondage; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - to us;
शेषम् (śeṣam) - harm (remaining); करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(By us, this (being) subdued, years here thirteen, the lion released from bondage, not to
us harm will do.)
This one, having been subdued by us for thirteen years here, the lion, now released from
bondage, will not do any harm to us. (04-44-17)
एकान्ते पार्थमासीनं कूपेऽग्निमिव संवृतम्। अज्ञानादभ्यवस्कन्द्य प्राप्ताः स्मो भयमुत्तमम्
॥०४-४४-१८॥
ekānte pārtham āsīnaṃ kūpe'gnim iva saṃvṛtam। ajñānād abhyavaskandya prāptāḥ smo bhayam
uttamam ॥04-44-18॥
[एकान्ते (ekānte) - in solitude; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna, son of Pṛthā); आसीनं
(āsīnam) - sitting; कूपे (kūpe) - in a well; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; इव (iva) - like;
संवृतम् (saṃvṛtam) - hidden; अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; अभ्यवस्कन्द्य
(abhyavaskandya) - having approached; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - we have attained; स्मः (smo) -
we (are); भयम् (bhayam) - fear; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(In solitude, Pārtha sitting, in a well, fire, like, hidden; from ignorance, having
approached, we have attained we, fear, supreme.)
By approaching Pārtha, who sat hidden in solitude like fire in a well, out of ignorance we
have incurred supreme fear. (04-44-18)
सह युध्यामहे पार्थमागतं युद्धदुर्मदम्। सैन्यास्तिष्ठन्तु संनद्धा व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः
॥०४-४४-१९॥
saha yudhyāmahe pārtham-āgatam yuddha-durmadam। sainyās tiṣṭhantu saṃnaddhā vyūḍha-ānikāḥ
prahāriṇaḥ॥ 04-44-19॥
[सह (saha) - together; युध्यामहे (yudhyāmahe) - let us fight; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha
(Arjuna); आगतं (āgatam) - who has come; युद्धदुर्मदम् (yuddha-durmadam) - intoxicated by the
battle; सैन्याः (sainyāḥ) - armies; तिष्ठन्तु (tiṣṭhantu) - let them stand; संनद्धाः
(saṃnaddhāḥ) - well-armored; व्यूढानीकाः (vyūḍha-ānikāḥ) - having arranged their divisions;
प्रहारिणः (prahāriṇaḥ) - ready to strike;]
(Together, let us fight Pārtha who has come, maddened by battle. Let the armies,
well-armored, having arranged their divisions, stand, ready to strike.)
Let us together fight Arjuna, who has arrived intoxicated by battle. Let the armies,
well-armored and arrayed in their divisions, stand ready to strike. (04-44-19)
द्रोणो दुर्योधनो भीष्मो भवान्द्रौणिस्तथा वयम्। सर्वे युध्यामहे पार्थं कर्ण मा साहसं कृथाः
॥०४-४४-२०॥
droṇo duryodhanō bhīṣmō bhavān drauṇis tathā vayam। sarvē yudhyāmahē pārthaṃ karṇa mā
sāhasaṃ kṛthāḥ ॥04-44-20॥

(Droṇa, Duryodhana, Bhīṣma, you, Drauṇi, and we all, all fight Pārtha. Karṇa, do not
perform rashness.)
Droṇa, Duryodhana, Bhīṣma, yourself, Drauṇi, and all of us fight against Arjuna. Karṇa, do
not act rashly. (04-44-20)
वयं व्यवसितं पार्थं वज्रपाणिमिवोद्यतम्। षड्रथाः प्रतियुध्येम तिष्ठेम यदि संहताः ॥०४-४४-२१॥
vayaṃ vyavasitaṃ pārthaṃ vajrapāṇimivodyatam। ṣaḍrathāḥ pratiyudhyema tiṣṭhema yadi
saṃhatāḥ ॥04-44-21॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; व्यवसितम् (vyavasitam) - firmly resolved; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Arjuna;
वज्रपाणिम् (vajrapāṇim) - (as) Indra (the one with the thunderbolt in hand); इव (iva) -
like; उद्यतम् (udyatam) - raised (weapon; poised to strike); षट्-रथाः (ṣaṭ-rathāḥ) - (we)
six chariot warriors; प्रति-युध्येम (prati-yudhyema) - would fight against; तिष्ठेम
(tiṣṭhema) - would stand (fast); यदि (yadi) - if; संहताः (saṃhatāḥ) - united;]
(We, having resolved, (against) Arjuna—like Indra with the thunderbolt uplifted—(we) six
chariot warriors, would fight against, would stand fast, if (we are) united.)
If we six chariot warriors unite, we could face Arjuna, who stands firm and ready like
Indra with upraised thunderbolt. (04-44-21)
व्यूढानीकानि सैन्यानि यत्ताः परमधन्विनः। युध्यामहेऽर्जुनं सङ्ख्ये दानवा वासवं यथा
॥०४-४४-२२॥
vyūḍhānīkāni sainyāni yattāḥ paramadhanvinaḥ। yudhyāmahe'rjunaṃ saṅkhye dānavā vāsavaṃ
yathā॥04-44-22॥

(yattāḥ) - devoted; परम-धन्विनः (parama-dhanvinaḥ) - the supreme archers; युध्यामहे
(yudhyāmahe) - we fight; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; दानवाः
(dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas (demons); वासवम् (vāsavam) - Indra; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Arrayed divisions armies devoted supreme archers we fight Arjuna in battle, the Dānavas
(demons) Indra as.)
Our armies, with arrayed divisions and supreme archers devoted, fight Arjuna in battle
just as the Dānavas fought Indra. (04-44-22)
