स शत्रुसेनां तरसा प्रणुद्य; गास्ता विजित्याथ धनुर्धराग्र्यः। दुर्योधनायाभिमुखं प्रयातो;
भूयोऽर्जुनः प्रियमाजौ चिकीर्षन् ॥०४-४९-१॥
sa śatrusenāṃ tarasā praṇudya; gāstā vijityātha dhanurdharāgryaḥ. duryodhanāyābhimukhaṃ
prayāto; bhūyo'rjunaḥ priyamājau cikīrṣan ॥04-49-1॥
[स (sa) - he; शत्रुसेनां (śatrusenām) - the enemy army; तरसा (tarasā) - by strength;
प्रणुद्य (praṇudya) - having driven away; गास्ता (gāstā) - having conquered the hosts;
विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; अथ (atha) - then; धनुर्धराग्र्यः (dhanurdharāgryaḥ) -
the foremost among archers; दुर्योधनाय (duryodhanāya) - to Duryodhana; अभिमुखं (abhimukham)
- facing toward; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - he went; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) -
Arjuna; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear act; आजौ (ājau) - in the battle; चिकीर्षन् (cikīrṣan) -
desiring to do;]
(He, having driven away the enemy army by strength; having conquered the hosts, then the
foremost among archers; to Duryodhana, facing toward, he went; again Arjuna, desiring to do
a dear act in the battle.)
Having forcefully scattered the enemy army and prevailing over the warriors, Arjuna—the
foremost archer—then moved toward Duryodhana, again seeking to perform a pleasing deed for
him in the battle. (04-49-1)
गोषु प्रयातासु जवेन मत्स्या; न्किरीटिनं कृतकार्यं च मत्वा। दुर्योधनायाभिमुखं प्रयान्तं;
कुरुप्रवीराः सहसाभिपेतुः ॥०४-४९-२॥

departed; (fem. loc.pl. of प्रयाता, gone); जवेन (javena) - with speed; (instrumental of जवा,
speed); मत्स्या; (matsyāḥ;) - the Matsyas; (nom.pl. matsya, here: the Matsya army); किरीटिनं
(kirīṭinaṃ) - the one with a crown; (acc.sg. kirīṭin, Arjuna); कृतकार्यं (kṛtakāryaṃ) -
having accomplished his mission; (acc.sg. kṛtakārya); च (ca) - and; मत्वा। (matvā.) - having
considered; (absolutive from मन्, to think); दुर्योधनायाभिमुखं (duryodhanāyābhimukhaṃ) -

(abhipetuḥ) - rushed towards; (3rd pl. per. perf. of अभि-√पत्, to attack);]
(In the cows having departed with speed, the Matsyas, having considered the one with the
crown and one who had accomplished his mission, proceeding towards Duryodhana, the mighty
Kurus suddenly rushed towards (him).)
When the cows had swiftly departed and the Matsyas, seeing the crowned one (Arjuna), who
had accomplished his task and was proceeding towards Duryodhana, the mighty Kurus suddenly
rushed at him. (04-49-2)
तेषामनीकानि बहूनि गाढं; व्यूढानि दृष्ट्वा बहुलध्वजानि। मत्स्यस्य पुत्रं द्विषतां निहन्ता;
वैराटिमामन्त्र्य ततोऽभ्युवाच ॥०४-४९-३॥
teṣām anīkāni bahūni gāḍhaṃ; vyūḍhāni dṛṣṭvā bahuladhvajāni. matsyasya putraṃ dviṣatāṃ
nihantā; vairāṭim āmantrya tato'bhyuvāca ॥04-49-3॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अनीकानि (anīkāni) - army-divisions; बहूनि (bahūni) - many;
गाढम् (gāḍham) - dense; व्यूढानि (vyūḍhāni) - arrayed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen;
बहुलध्वजानि (bahuladhvajāni) - having many banners; मत्स्यस्य (matsyasya) - of Matsya
(kingdom); पुत्रम् (putram) - the son; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; निहन्ता
(nihantā) - destroyer; वैराटिम् (vairāṭim) - Viraṭa (the king of Virāṭa); आमन्त्र्य
(āmantrya) - having addressed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्युवाच (abhyuvāca) - spoke to;]
(Of them, the army-divisions many, dense; arrayed, having seen, with many banners. Of
Matsya, the son, the enemies' destroyer; Viraṭa, having addressed, then spoke to.)
Having seen their many and densely arrayed divisions with numerous banners, the destroyer
of the enemies addressed Viraṭa, the son of the king of Matsya, and then spoke to him.

एतेन तूर्णं प्रतिपादयेमा; ञ्श्वेतान्हयान्काञ्चनरश्मियोक्त्रान्। जवेन सर्वेण कुरु प्रयत्न;
मासादयैतद्रथसिंहवृन्दम् ॥०४-४९-४॥
etena tūrṇaṃ pratipādayemā; ñśvetānhayānkāñcanaraśmiyoktrān. javena sarveṇa kuru prayatna;
māsādayaitadrathasiṃhavṛndam ॥04-49-4॥
[एतेन (etena) - by this; तूर्णं (tūrṇam) - quickly; प्रतिपादयेमा (pratipādayemā) - let us
reach; श्वेतान् (śvetān) - white; हयान् (hayān) - horses; काञ्चनरश्मि (kāñcana-raśmi) -
golden reins; युक्त्रान् (yoktrān) - yoked; जवेन् (javen) - with speed; सर्वेण (sarveṇa) -
with all; कुरु (kuru) - do; प्रयत्न (prayatna) - effort; मासादय (māsādaya) - attain; एतद्
(etad) - this; रथ (ratha) - chariot; सिंह (siṃha) - lion; वृन्दम् (vṛndam) - group;]
(By this quickly let us reach; the white horses yoked with golden reins. With all speed
do effort; attain this group of lion-chariots.)
Let us quickly reach by this means; white horses yoked with golden reins. Exert every
effort with speed; attain this troop of lion-like chariots. (04-49-4)
गजो गजेनेव मया दुरात्मा; यो योद्धुमाकाङ्क्षति सूतपुत्रः। तमेव मां प्रापय राजपुत्र;
दुर्योधनापाश्रयजातदर्पम् ॥०४-४९-५॥
gajo gajenāiva mayā durātmā; yo yoddhum-ākāṅkṣati sūtaputraḥ। tam-eva māṃ prāpaya
rāja-putra; duryodhanā-pāśraya-jāta-darpam॥04-49-5॥
[गजः (gajaḥ) - elephant; गजेन (gajena) - by an elephant; इव (iva) - just as; मया (mayā) -
by me; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - wicked soul; यः (yaḥ) - who; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight;
आकाङ्क्षति (ākāṅkṣati) - desires; सूतपुत्रः (sūtaputraḥ) - the son of the charioteer; तम्
(tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; माम् (mām) - me; प्रापय (prāpaya) - cause to reach; राजपुत्र
(rāja-putra) - O prince; दुर्योधनापाश्रयजातदर्पम् (duryodhanā-pāśraya-jāta-darpam) - whose
pride has arisen from reliance on Duryodhana;]
(The wicked soul, like an elephant by an elephant by me, who desires to fight, the sūta's
son; him only, me cause to reach, O prince, whose pride has arisen from reliance on
Duryodhana.)
O prince, bring me to that wicked Karṇa, the son of the charioteer, who desires to fight
with me—like an elephant with another elephant—whose pride has arisen from reliance on
Duryodhana. (04-49-5)
स तैर्हयैर्वातजवैर्बृहद्भिः; पुत्रो विराटस्य सुवर्णकक्ष्यैः। विध्वंसयंस्तद्रथिनामनीकं;
ततोऽवहत्पाण्डवमाजिमध्ये ॥०४-४९-६॥
sa tair hayair vātajavair bṛhadbhiḥ; putro virāṭasya suvarṇakakṣyaiḥ. vidhvaṁsayan tad
rathinām anīkaṁ; tato 'vahat pāṇḍavam āji-madhye ॥04-49-6॥
[स (sa) - he; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - horses; वातजवैः (vātajavaiḥ) -
having the speed of the wind; बृहद्भिः (bṛhadbhiḥ) - great; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; विराटस्य
(virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; सुवर्णकक्ष्यैः (suvarṇakakṣyaiḥ) - with golden harness; विध्वंसयन्
(vidhvaṁsayan) - destroying; तत् (tad) - that; रथिनाम् (rathinām) - of chariot-warriors;
अनीकं (anīkaṁ) - array; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अवहत् (avahat) - conveyed; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) -
the Pāṇḍava; आजिमध्ये (āji-madhye) - in the midst of the battle;]
(He, by those horses, great and having the speed of the wind, the son of Virāṭa, with
golden harness, destroying that array of chariot-warriors, then conveyed the Pāṇḍava into
the midst of the battle.)
He, the son of Virāṭa, with those great horses having the speed of the wind and golden
harness, destroyed that array of chariot-warriors and then brought the Pāṇḍava into the
midst of the battle. (04-49-6)
तं चित्रसेनो विशिखैर्विपाठैः; सङ्ग्रामजिच्छत्रुसहो जयश्च। प्रत्युद्ययुर्भारतमापतन्तं;
महारथाः कर्णमभीप्समानाः ॥०४-४९-७॥
taṃ citraseno viśikhair vipāṭhaiḥ; saṅgrāmajit-śatru-saho jayaś ca. pratyudyayur bhāratam
āpatantaṃ; mahārathāḥ karṇam abhipsamānāḥ ॥04-49-7॥

(Him, Citrasena, with arrows, with sharp ones, Saṅgrāmajit, Śatru-saha, and Jaya,
advanced (to meet) Bharata (Arjuna) rushing, the great chariot-warriors desiring to support
Karna.)
Him, Citrasena, Saṅgrāmajit, Śatru-saha, and Jaya, armed with sharp arrows, the great
chariot-warriors, longing to support Karna, advanced to meet the rushing Bharata (Arjuna).

ततः स तेषां पुरुषप्रवीरः; शरासनार्चिः शरवेगतापः। व्रातान्रथानामदहत्स मन्यु; र्वनं यथाग्निः
कुरुपुङ्गवानाम् ॥०४-४९-८॥
tataḥ sa teṣāṃ puruṣapravīraḥ; śarāsanārciḥ śaravegatāpaḥ। vrātān rathānām adahatsa manyur
vanaṃ yathāgniḥ kuru-puṅgavānām ॥04-49-8॥

(rathānām) - of chariots; अदहत् (adahat) - burned; स (sa) - he; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - in wrath;
वनम् (vanam) - forest; यथा (yathā) - like; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; कुरुपुङ्गवानाम्
(kuru-puṅgavānām) - of the chief among Kurus;]
(Then he, the foremost among men, his bow blazing, whose arrows have the heat of speed,
burned the hosts of chariots in wrath, like fire (burns) a forest, of the chief among
Kurus.)
Then he, the foremost among men, his bow blazing and his arrows swift and scorching, in
his rage burned the Kuru chieftains’ chariot ranks as fire would burn a forest. (04-49-8)
तस्मिंस्तु युद्धे तुमुले प्रवृत्ते; पार्थं विकर्णोऽतिरथं रथेन। विपाठवर्षेण कुरुप्रवीरो;
भीमेन भीमानुजमाससाद ॥०४-४९-९॥
tasmiṁs tu yuddhe tumule pravṛtte; pārthaṁ vikarṇo'tirathaṁ rathena. vipāṭhavarṣeṇa
kurupravīro; bhīmena bhīmānujamāsasāda ॥04-49-9॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तु (tu) - but; युद्धे (yuddhe) - battle; तुमुले (tumule) -
tumultuous; प्रवृत्ते (pravṛtte) - having commenced; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna);
विकर्णः (vikarṇaḥ) - Vikarṇa; अतिरथम् (atiratham) - great chariot-warrior; रथेन (rathena) -
with chariot; विपाठवर्षेण (vipāṭha-varṣeṇa) - with a shower of arrows; कुरुप्रवीरः
(kuru-pravīraḥ) - the mighty (hero) of the Kurus; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhīma; भीम-अनुजम्
(bhīma-anujam) - younger brother of Bhīma; आससाद (āsasāda) - attacked;]
(In that battle, tumultuous, having commenced; Pārtha (Arjuna), Vikarṇa, great
chariot-warrior, with chariot; with a shower of arrows, the mighty hero of the Kurus; by
Bhīma, the younger brother of Bhīma, attacked.)
But in that tumultuous battle that had commenced, Vikarṇa, the mighty chariot-warrior of
the Kurus, with his chariot and a shower of arrows, attacked Partha (Arjuna); Bhīma
confronted Bhīma's younger brother. (04-49-9)
ततो विकर्णस्य धनुर्विकृष्य; जाम्बूनदाग्र्योपचितं दृढज्यम्। अपातयद्ध्वजमस्य प्रमथ्य;
छिन्नध्वजः सोऽप्यपयाज्जवेन ॥०४-४९-१०॥
tato vikarṇasya dhanurvikṛṣya; jāmbūnadāgryopacitaṃ dṛḍhajyam. apātayaddhvajamasya
pramathya; chinnadhvajaḥ so'pyapayājjavena ॥04-49-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विकर्णस्य (vikarṇasya) - of Vikarṇa; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; विकृष्य
(vikṛṣya) - drawing back; जाम्बूनद-अग्र्य-उपचितं (jāmbūnada-agrya-upacitaṃ) - adorned at tip
with excellent gold; दृढज्यम् (dṛḍhajyam) - with firm string; अपातयत् (apātayat) - he caused
to fall; ध्वजम् (dhvajam) - banner; अस्य (asya) - his; प्रमथ्य (pramathya) - having crushed;
छिन्नध्वजः (chinnadhvajaḥ) - having the banner cut; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; अपयात्
(apayāt) - departed; जवेन (javena) - with speed;]
(Then, having drawn the bow of Vikarṇa, adorned at its tip with excellent gold, with firm
string, he caused his banner to fall, having crushed (it); having the banner cut, he too
departed with speed.)
Then, drawing Vikarṇa's bow, which was adorned at the tip with the best gold and had a
firm string, he brought down his banner after crushing it; with his banner severed, he also
swiftly departed. (04-49-10)
तं शात्रवाणां गणबाधितारं; कर्माणि कुर्वाणममानुषाणि। शत्रुन्तपः कोपममृष्यमाणः;
समर्पयत्कूर्मनखेन पार्थम् ॥०४-४९-११॥
taṃ śātravāṇāṃ gaṇabādhitāraṃ; karmāṇi kurvāṇam amānuṣāṇi. śatrūn tapaḥ kopam amṛṣyamāṇaḥ;
samarpayat kūrmanakhena pārtham ॥04-49-11॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; शात्रवाणां (śātravāṇām) - of enemies; गणबाधितारं (gaṇabādhitāram) -
overcomer of groups; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; कुर्वाणम् (kurvāṇam) - doing; अमानुषाणि
(amānuṣāṇi) - not human; शत्रुन्तपः (śatrūn-tapaḥ) - the one tormenting enemies; कोपम्
(kopam) - anger; अमृष्यमाणः (amṛṣyamāṇaḥ) - not enduring; समर्पयत् (samarpayat) - offered;
कूर्मनखेन (kūrmanakhena) - with tortoise's nail; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Pārtha (Arjuna);]
(Him, overcomer of groups of enemies, doing actions not human. The one tormenting
enemies, not enduring anger, offered with tortoise's nail to Pārtha.)
That overcomer of enemy hosts who performed superhuman deeds, the wrathful vanquisher of
foes, unable to bear his anger, attacked Pārtha with his tortoise-like nail. (04-49-11)
स तेन राज्ञातिरथेन विद्धो; विगाहमानो ध्वजिनीं कुरूणाम्। शत्रुन्तपं पञ्चभिराशु विद्ध्वा;
ततोऽस्य सूतं दशभिर्जघान ॥०४-४९-१२॥
sa tena rājñātirathena viddho; vigāhamāno dhvajinīṃ kurūṇām. śatruntapaṃ pañcabhirāśu
viddhvā; tato'sya sūtaṃ daśabhirjaghāna ॥04-49-12॥
[स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - by him; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; अतिरथेन (atirathena) -

distressing the enemy; पञ्चभिः (pañcabhiḥ) - with five; आशु (āśu) - quickly; विद्ध्वा
(viddhvā) - having pierced; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; सूतम् (sūtam) -
charioteer; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; जघान (jaghāna) - he struck;]
(He, struck by that king, the great chariot-warrior, while entering the army of the
Kurus, having quickly pierced the enemy-distresser with five, then struck his charioteer
with ten.)
He, struck by that king, the great chariot-warrior, as he entered the army of the Kurus,

ततः स विद्धो भरतर्षभेण; बाणेन गात्रावरणातिगेन। गतासुराजौ निपपात भूमौ; नगो नगाग्रादिव
वातरुग्णः ॥०४-४९-१३॥
tataḥ sa viddho bharatarṣabheṇa; bāṇena gātrāvaraṇātigena. gatāsur ājau nipapāta bhūmau;
nago nagāgrād iva vātarugṇaḥ ॥04-49-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; विद्धः (viddhaḥ) - pierced; भरतर्षभेण (bharatarṣabheṇa)
- by the best of the Bharatas; बाणेन (bāṇena) - by an arrow; गात्रावरणातिगेन
(gātrāvaraṇātigena) - penetrating body-covering; गतासुः (gatāsuḥ) - whose life departed; आजौ
(ājau) - on the battlefield; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; भूमौ (bhūmau) - upon the ground;
नगः (nagaḥ) - the elephant; नगाग्रात् (nagāgrāt) - from the mountain-top; इव (iva) - like;
वातरुग्णः (vātarugṇaḥ) - struck down by wind;]
(Then he, pierced by the best of the Bharatas, by an arrow penetrating the body-covering,
(his) life gone, on the battlefield fell upon the ground; like an elephant from the
mountain-top struck down by the wind.)
Then he, struck by the best of the Bharatas with an arrow that pierced his body, his life
departed, fell on the battlefield to the ground, like an elephant thrown down from a
mountain-top by the wind. (04-49-13)
रथर्षभास्ते तु रथर्षभेण; वीरा रणे वीरतरेण भग्नाः। चकम्पिरे वातवशेन काले; प्रकम्पितानीव
महावनानि ॥०४-४९-१४॥
rathaṛṣabhās te tu rathaṛṣabheṇa; vīrā raṇe vīratareṇa bhagnāḥ. cakam'pire vātavaśena
kāle; prakampitānīva mahāvanāni ॥04-49-14॥
[रथर्षभाः (rathaṛṣabhāḥ) - the best of chariot-warriors; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but;
रथर्षभेण (rathaṛṣabheṇa) - by the best of chariot-warriors; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; रणे
(raṇe) - in battle; वीरतरेण (vīratareṇa) - by a superior hero; भग्नाः (bhagnāḥ) - broken;
चकम्पिरे (cakam'pire) - trembled; वातवशेन (vātavaśena) - by the force of the wind; काले
(kāle) - at that time; प्रकम्पितानि (prakampitāni) - shaken violently; इव (iva) - like;
महावनानि (mahāvanāni) - great forests;]
(The best of chariot-warriors, they, but by the best of chariot-warriors; heroes in
battle by a superior hero broken; trembled by the force of the wind at that time, like great
forests shaken violently.)
But those best of chariot-warriors were broken by the best of chariot-warriors; the heroes
in battle were shattered by a superior hero; they trembled at that time by the force of the
wind, like great forests shaken violently. (04-49-14)
हतास्तु पार्थेन नरप्रवीरा; भूमौ युवानः सुषुपुः सुवेषाः। वसुप्रदा वासवतुल्यवीर्याः; पराजिता
वासवजेन सङ्ख्ये ॥ सुवर्णकार्ष्णायसवर्मनद्धा; नागा यथा हैमवताः प्रवृद्धाः ॥०४-४९-१५॥
hatāstu pārthena narapravīrā; bhūmau yuvānaḥ suśupuḥ suveṣāḥ. vasu-pradā
vāsavatulyavīryāḥ; parājitā vāsavajena saṅkhye ॥ suvarṇakārṣṇāyasavarmanaddhā; nāgā yathā
haimavatāḥ pravṛddhāḥ ॥04-49-15॥
[हतास्तु (hatāstu) - slain; but; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha (Arjuna); नरप्रवीरा
(narapravīrā) - foremost of men; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; युवानः (yuvānaḥ) - the
youths; सुषुपुः (suśupuḥ) - they slept; सुवेषाः (suveṣāḥ) - well-dressed; वसुप्रदा
(vasupradā) - wealth-givers; वासवतुल्यवीर्याः (vāsavatulyavīryāḥ) - equal in strength to
Vāsava (Indra); पराजिता (parājitā) - defeated; वासवजेन (vāsavajena) - by the son of Vāsava

(Slain by Pārtha, foremost of men; on the ground, the youths slept, well-dressed.
Wealth-givers, equal in strength to Vāsava; defeated by the son of Vāsava in battle. Adorned
with golden and iron armor; like elephants, grown large, of the Himālaya. (04-49-15))
Slain by Arjuna, foremost among men, the young warriors, well-attired, fell asleep on the
ground. These wealth-givers, equal in might to Indra, were defeated in battle by the son of
Indra. Clad in golden and iron armor, they were like great elephants of the Himalayas.

तथा स शत्रून्समरे विनिघ्न; न्गाण्डीवधन्वा पुरुषप्रवीरः। चचार सङ्ख्ये प्रदिशो दिशश्च;
दहन्निवाग्निर्वनमातपान्ते ॥०४-४९-१६॥
tathā sa śatrūnsamare viniṅgh; ngāṇḍīvadhanvā puruṣapravīraḥ। cacāra saṅkhye pradiśo
diśaśca; dahannivāgnirvanamātapānte ॥04-49-16॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; स (sa) - he; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; समरे (samare) - in battle;
विनिघ्नन् (viniṅghan) - destroying; गाण्डीवधन्वा (gāṇḍīvadhanvā) - bearer of the bow
Gāṇḍīva; पुरुषप्रवीरः (puruṣapravīraḥ) - the foremost of men; चचार (cacāra) - moved about;
सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in the battle-array; प्रदिशः (pradiśaḥ) - quarters of the sky; दिशः
(diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; दहन् (dahan) - burning; इव (iva) - like; अग्निः (agniḥ)
- fire; वनम् (vanam) - forest; आतप-अन्ते (ātapa-ante) - at the end of the hot season;]
(Thus he, enemies in battle destroying, bearer of the bow Gāṇḍīva, the foremost of men,
moved about in the battle-array in the quarters and directions, burning like fire a forest
at the end of the hot season.)
Thus, Arjuna, the foremost of men and bearer of Gāṇḍīva, destroying his enemies in battle,
moved through the battle-array across all directions, like fire burning a forest at the end
of summer. (04-49-16)
प्रकीर्णपर्णानि यथा वसन्ते; विशातयित्वात्यनिलो नुदन्खे। तथा सपत्नान्विकिरन्किरीटी; चचार
सङ्ख्येऽतिरथो रथेन ॥०४-४९-१७॥
prakīrṇaparṇāni yathā vasante; viśātayitvāti-anilo nudan khe. tathā sapatnān vikiran
kirīṭī; cacāra saṅkhye'tiratho rathena ॥04-49-17॥
[प्रकीर्णपर्णानि (prakīrṇaparṇāni) - scattered leaves; यथा (yathā) - just as; वसन्ते
(vasante) - in spring; विशातयित्वा (viśātayitvā) - having shaken down; अत्यनिलः (ati-anilaḥ)
- strong wind; नुदन् (nudan) - driving; खे (khe) - in the sky; तथा (tathā) - in the same
way; सपत्नान् (sapatnān) - rival enemies; विकिरन् (vikiran) - scattering; किरीटी (kirīṭī) -
the crested one; चचार (cacāra) - moved; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; अतिरथः (atirathaḥ) -
great chariot-warrior; रथेन (rathena) - with his chariot;]
(Scattered leaves just as, in spring, having shaken down, strong wind, driving, in the
sky; in the same way, rival enemies, scattering, the crested one, moved, in battle, great
chariot-warrior, with his chariot.)
Just as in spring, a strong wind drives and scatters fallen leaves through the sky, so too
the crested great chariot-warrior moved in battle, scattering his rivals with his chariot.

शोणाश्ववाहस्य हयान्निहत्य; वैकर्तनभ्रातुरदीनसत्त्वः। एकेन सङ्ग्रामजितः शरेण; शिरो जहाराथ
किरीटमाली ॥०४-४९-१८॥
śoṇāśvavāhasya hayān nihatya; vaikartana-bhrātur adīnasattvaḥ। ekena saṅgrāmajitaḥ śareṇa;
śiro jahāra atha kirīṭamālī ॥04-49-18॥
[शोणाश्ववाहस्य (śoṇāśvavāhasya) - of him whose horses are red; हयान् (hayān) - horses;
निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; वैकर्तनभ्रातुः (vaikartana-bhrātuḥ) - of the brother of
Vaikartana; अदीनसत्त्वः (adīna-sattvaḥ) - one whose spirit is undepressed; एकेन (ekena) -
with one; सङ्ग्रामजितः (saṅgrāma-jitaḥ) - victorious in battle; शरेण (śareṇa) - with an
arrow; शिरः (śiraḥ) - the head; जहार (jahāra) - he took; अथ (atha) - then; किरीटमाली
(kirīṭamālī) - the one adorned with a diadem;]
(Having slain the horses of him whose steeds are red, of the brother of Vaikartana, the
one whose spirit is undepressed, with one arrow, victorious in battle, then the
diadem-adorned one took the head.)
The diadem-adorned hero, undismayed in spirit, slew the red steeds of Vaikartana’s
brother, and then with a single arrow, victorious in battle, took off his head. (04-49-18)
तस्मिन्हते भ्रातरि सूतपुत्रो; वैकर्तनो वीर्यमथाददानः। प्रगृह्य दन्ताविव नागराजो; महर्षभं
व्याघ्र इवाभ्यधावत् ॥०४-४९-१९॥
tasmin hate bhrātari sūtaputro; vaikartano vīryam athādadānaḥ. pragṛhya dantāv iva
nāgarājo; maharṣabhaṃ vyāghra ivābhyadhāvat ॥04-49-19॥
[तस्मिन्हते (tasmin hate) - in that (one) having been killed; भ्रातरि (bhrātari) -
brother; सूतपुत्रः (sūtaputraḥ) - the charioteer's son; वैकर्तनः (vaikartanaḥ) - Vaikartana
(Karna); वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; अथ (atha) - then; आददानः (ādadānaḥ) - taking up;
प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having seized; दन्तौ इव (dantau iva) - like the (two) tusks; नागराजः
(nāgarājaḥ) - king of serpents (elephant king); महर्षभम् (maharṣabham) - great bull;
व्याघ्रः (vyāghraḥ) - tiger; इव (iva) - like; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - rushed at;]
(In that one having been killed, (his) brother, the charioteer's son Vaikartana (Karna),
then taking up (his) strength, having seized (his weapons) like the tusks (are seized) by
the king of serpents, like a tiger (rushes at) a great bull, rushed at (him).)
When his brother was killed, Karna, the son of the charioteer (Vaikartana), seizing his
strength, grasped his weapons like the elephant king his tusks, and like a tiger attacking a
great bull, rushed forward. (4-49-19)
स पाण्डवं द्वादशभिः पृषत्कै; र्वैकर्तनः शीघ्रमुपाजघान। विव्याध गात्रेषु हयांश्च सर्वा;
न्विराटपुत्रं च शरैर्निजघ्ने ॥०४-४९-२०॥
sa pāṇḍavaṃ dvādaśabhiḥ pṛṣatkair vaikartanaḥ śīghram upājaghāna। vivyādha gātreṣu hayāṃś
ca sarvān virāṭaputraṃ ca śaraiḥ nijaghne ॥04-49-20॥
[स (sa) - he; पाण्डवं (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava; द्वादशभिः (dvādaśabhiḥ) - with twelve;
पृषत्कैः (pṛṣatkaiḥ) - with arrows; वैकर्तनः (vaikartanaḥ) - Vaikartana (son of Vikartana,
i.e., Karṇa); शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; उपाजघान (upājaghāna) - approached (and) struck;
विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - in the limbs; हयांश् (hayāṃś) - horses; च
(ca) - and; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; विराटपुत्रं (virāṭaputram) - the son of Virāṭa; च (ca) -
and; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; निजघ्ने (nijaghne) - he struck down;]
(He, the Vaikartana, quickly approached and struck the Pāṇḍava with twelve arrows; he
pierced all the horses in the limbs, and he struck down the son of Virāṭa with arrows.)
Vaikartana (Karna) quickly attacked the Pāṇḍava with twelve arrows, piercing all the
horses in their limbs, and struck down the son of Virāṭa with arrows. (04-49-20)
स हस्तिनेवाभिहतो गजेन्द्रः; प्रगृह्य भल्लान्निशितान्निषङ्गात्। आकर्णपूर्णं च धनुर्विकृष्य;
विव्याध बाणैरथ सूतपुत्रम् ॥०४-४९-२१॥
sa hastinevābhihato gajendraḥ; pragṛhya bhallān niśitān niṣaṅgāt. ākarṇapūrṇaṃ ca dhanur
vikṛṣya; vivyādha bāṇair atha sūtaputram ॥04-49-21॥
[स (sa) - he; हस्तिनेव (hastinā iva) - like by an elephant; अभिहतः (abhihataḥ) - having

taken; भल्लान् (bhallān) - arrowheads; निशितान् (niśitān) - sharp; निषङ्गात् (niṣaṅgāt) -
from the quiver; आकर्णपूर्णं (ākarṇapūrṇam) - drawn up to the ear; च (ca) - and; धनुः
(dhanuḥ) - bow; विकृष्य (vikṛṣya) - having stretched; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; बाणैः
(bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; अथ (atha) - then; सूतपुत्रम् (sūtaputram) - the charioteer's son;]
(He, like an elephant struck by another elephant, gajendra; having taken sharp arrowheads
from the quiver; and having stretched the bow drawn up to the ear; pierced with arrows then
the charioteer's son.)

अथास्य बाहूरुशिरोललाटं; ग्रीवां रथाङ्गानि परावमर्दी। स्थितस्य बाणैर्युधि निर्बिभेद;
गाण्डीवमुक्तैरशनिप्रकाशैः ॥०४-४९-२२॥

the one standing; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; निर्बिभेद
(nirbibheda) - pierced; गाण्डीवमुक्तैः (gāṇḍīvamuktaiḥ) - released from the Gandiva;
अशनिप्रकाशैः (aśaniprakāśaiḥ) - shining like lightning;]
(Then the subduer of foes, with arrows released from the Gandiva shining like lightning,
in battle pierced his arms, thighs, head, forehead, neck, and parts of the chariot, of the
one standing.)
Then the subduer of foes, standing in battle, pierced with arrows shining like
lightning—loosed from the Gandiva—the arms, thighs, head, forehead, neck, and chariot parts

battle; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; वैकर्तनः (vaikartanaḥ) - the son of Vikartana
(Karna); पाण्डवबाणतप्तः (pāṇḍava-bāṇa-taptaḥ) - scorched by Pāṇḍava's arrows;]
(He, struck by Arjuna-released arrows, like an elephant by an elephant, defeated swift
one, having left the forefront of battle, departed—the son of Vikartana, scorched by
Pāṇḍava's arrows.)
