तान्यनीकान्यदृश्यन्त कुरूणामुग्रधन्विनाम्। संसर्पन्तो यथा मेघा घर्मान्ते मन्दमारुताः
॥०४-५१-१॥
tāny anīkāni dṛśyanta kurūṇām ugradhanvinām। saṁsarpanto yathā meghā gharmānte
mandamārutāḥ॥04-51-1॥
[तानि (tāni) - those (neuter plural); अनीकानि (anīkāni) - divisions (of an army);
दृश्यन्त (dṛśyanta) - were seen; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; उग्रधन्विनाम्
(ugradhaninām) - of fierce bowmen; संसर्पन्तः (saṁsarpantaḥ) - moving (or gliding) together;
यथा (yathā) - as; like; मेघाः (meghāḥ) - clouds; घर्मान्ते (gharmānte) - at the end of
summer; after heat; मन्दमारुताः (mandamārutāḥ) - with gentle winds;]
(Those divisions were seen of the Kurus of fierce bowmen, moving together as clouds at
the end of summer with gentle winds.)
The formations of the fierce-bowed Kurus appeared, moving together like clouds at the end
of the summer, borne along by gentle breezes. (04-51-1)
अभ्याशे वाजिनस्तस्थुः समारूढाः प्रहारिभिः। भीमरूपाश्च मातङ्गास्तोमराङ्कुशचोदिताः ॥०४-५१-२॥
abhyāśe vājinastasthuḥ samārūḍhāḥ prahāribhiḥ। bhīmarūpāśca
mātaṅgāstomarāṅkuśacoditāḥ॥04-51-2॥
[अभ्याशे (abhyāśe) - near; vicinity; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - horses; तस्थुः (tasthuḥ) - stood;
समारूढाः (samārūḍhāḥ) - mounted by; प्रहारिभिः (prahāribhiḥ) - strikers; attackers; भीमरूपाः
(bhīmarūpāḥ) - terrible in form; च (ca) - and; मातङ्गाः (mātaṅgāḥ) - elephants;
तोमराङ्कुशचोदिताः (tomarāṅkuśacoditāḥ) - urged by spears and goads;]
(Near, the horses stood, mounted by attackers. And terrible in form, the elephants, urged
by spears and goads.)
Nearby, the horses stood with warriors mounted upon them; and the elephants, dreadful in
appearance, were driven forward with spears and goads. (04-51-2)
ततः शक्रः सुरगणैः समारुह्य सुदर्शनम्। सहोपायात्तदा राजन्विश्वाश्विमरुतां गणैः ॥०४-५१-३॥
tataḥ śakraḥ suragaṇaiḥ samāruhya sudarśanam। sahopāyāttadā rājan viśvāśvimarutāṃ
gaṇaiḥ॥04-51-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; सुरगणैः (suragaṇaiḥ) - with groups of gods;
समारुह्य (samāruhya) - having mounted together; सुदर्शनम् (sudarśanam) - Sudarshana (the
heavenly chariot); सह (saha) - together with; उपायात् (upāyāt) - departed; तदा (tadā) -
then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विश्वाश्विमरुतां (viśvāśvimarutāṃ) - of all the Ashvin and
Marut groups; गणैः (gaṇaiḥ) - with the groups;]
(Then Indra, with the groups of gods, having mounted Sudarshana, together departed then,
O king, with the groups of all the Ashvins and Maruts.)
Then, O king, Indra, with the groups of gods, mounted Sudarshana and departed together
with the hosts of all the Ashvins and Maruts. (04-51-3)
तद्देवयक्षगन्धर्वमहोरगसमाकुलम्। शुशुभेऽभ्रविनिर्मुक्तं ग्रहैरिव नभस्तलम् ॥०४-५१-४॥
tad-deva-yakṣa-gandharva-mahōraga-samākulam। śuśubhe 'bhra-vinir-muktaṃ grahair iva
nabhas-talam ॥04-51-4॥
[तत् (tat) - that; देव-यक्ष-गन्धर्व-महोरग-समाकुलम्
(deva-yakṣa-gandharva-mahōraga-samākulam) - filled with devas, yakṣas, gandharvas, and great
serpents; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; अभ्र-विनिर्मुक्तम् ('abhra-vinir-muktam) - freed from
clouds; ग्रहैः (grahaiḥ) - by (the) planets; इव (iva) - like; नभस्तलम् (nabhas-talam) -
(the) vault of the sky;]
(That, filled with devas, yakṣas, gandharvas, and great serpents, shone, freed from
clouds, like the vault of the sky by the planets.)
That place, crowded with devas, yakṣas, gandharvas, and mighty serpents, shone, free from
clouds, like the sky illuminated by the planets. (4-51-4)
अस्त्राणां च बलं तेषां मानुषेषु प्रयुज्यताम्। तच्च घोरं महद्युद्धं भीष्मार्जुनसमागमे
॥०४-५१-५॥
astrāṇāṃ ca balaṃ teṣāṃ mānuṣeṣu prayujyatām. tac ca ghoraṃ mahadyuddhaṃ
bhīṣmārjuna-samāgame ॥04-51-5॥
[अस्त्राणां (astrāṇāṃ) - of the missiles; च (ca) - and; बलं (balaṃ) - power; तेषां
(teṣāṃ) - their; मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among men; प्रयुज्यताम् (prayujyatām) - let it be
employed; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; महत् (mahat) - great;
युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; भीष्मार्जुनसमागमे (bhīṣma-arjuna-samāgame) - in the encounter
between Bhīṣma and Arjuna;]
(And the power of the missiles, their, among men, let it be employed. That and the
terrible great battle in the encounter between Bhīṣma and Arjuna (04-51-5))
And let the power of those missiles be employed among men; and that terrible, great battle
took place in the encounter between Bhīṣma and Arjuna. (04-51-5)
शतं शतसहस्राणां यत्र स्थूणा हिरण्मयाः। मणिरत्नमयाश्चान्याः प्रासादमुपधारयन् ॥०४-५१-६॥
śataṃ śatasahasrāṇāṃ yatra sthūṇā hiraṇmayāḥ. maṇiratnamayāś cānyāḥ prāsādam upadhārayan

[शतं (śatam) - a hundred; शतसहस्राणां (śatasahasrāṇām) - of one hundred thousands; यत्र
(yatra) - where; स्थूणा (sthūṇāḥ) - pillars; हिरण्मयाः (hiraṇmayāḥ) - golden; मणिरत्नमयाः
(maṇiratnamayāḥ) - made of gems and jewels; च (ca) - and; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - others; प्रासादम्
(prāsādam) - palace; उपधारयन् (upadhārayan) - was supporting;]
(Where (there were) pillars made of gold, a hundred (in number) of hundred thousands; and
others made of gems and jewels, supporting the palace.)
Where there were a hundred thousand golden pillars and other pillars made of gems and
jewels, supporting the palace. (04-51-6)
तत्र कामगमं दिव्यं सर्वरत्नविभूषितम्। विमानं देवराजस्य शुशुभे खेचरं तदा ॥०४-५१-७॥
tatra kāmagamaṃ divyaṃ sarvaratnavibhūṣitam। vimānaṃ devarājasya śuśubhe khecaraṃ tadā

[तत्र (tatra) - there; कामगमं (kāmagamam) - fulfilling desires; दिव्यं (divyam) - divine;
सर्वरत्नविभूषितम् (sarvaratnavibhūṣitam) - adorned with all jewels; विमानं (vimānam) -
aerial chariot; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of gods; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone;
खेचरं (khecaram) - moving in the sky; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(There desire-fulfilling divine adorned-with-all-jewels aerial-chariot
of-the-king-of-gods shone sky-roaming then.)
Then, there shone the divine aerial chariot of the king of the gods, adorned with all
jewels and moving in the sky, capable of going wherever one's desire leads. (04-51-7)
तत्र देवास्त्रयस्त्रिंशत्तिष्ठन्ति सहवासवाः। गन्धर्वा राक्षसाः सर्पाः पितरश्च महर्षिभिः
॥०४-५१-८॥
tatra devāstrayastr̥ṁśattiṣṭhanti sahavāsavāḥ। gandharvā rākṣasāḥ sarpāḥ pitaraśca
maharṣibhiḥ ॥04-51-8॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; त्रयस्त्रिंशत् (trayastr̥ṁśat) -
thirty-three; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - stand; सह (saha) - together with; वासवाः (vāsavāḥ) -
the followers of Vāsava (Indra); गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) -
Rākṣasas; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - serpents; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; च (ca) - and; महर्षिभिः
(maharṣibhiḥ) - together with great sages;]
(There gods thirty-three stand together with followers of Vāsava; Gandharvas, Rākṣasas,
serpents, ancestors and with great sages.)
There the thirty-three gods reside together with the followers of Vāsava (Indra); along
with Gandharvas, Rākṣasas, serpents, the ancestors, and great sages. (04-51-8)
तथा राजा वसुमना बलाक्षः सुप्रतर्दनः। अष्टकश्च शिबिश्चैव ययातिर्नहुषो गयः ॥०४-५१-९॥
tathā rājā vasumanā balākṣaḥ supratardanaḥ। aṣṭakaś ca śibiś caiva yayātir nahuṣo
gayaḥ॥04-51-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this manner; राजा (rājā) - king; वसुमना (vasumanā) - Vasumanas
(proper noun); बलाक्षः (balākṣaḥ) - Balākṣa (proper noun); सुप्रतर्दनः (supratardanaḥ) -
Supratardana (proper noun); अष्टकः (aṣṭakaḥ) - Aṣṭaka (proper noun); च (ca) - and; शिबिः
(śibiḥ) - Śibi (proper noun); चैव (ca eva) - and also; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti (proper
noun); नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa (proper noun); गयः (gayaḥ) - Gaya (proper noun);]
(Thus, King Vasumanas, Balākṣa, Supratardana, and Aṣṭaka, and also Śibi, Yayāti, Nahuṣa,
Gaya.)
Likewise, the kings Vasumanas, Balākṣa, Supratardana, Aṣṭaka, Śibi, Yayāti, Nahuṣa, and

मनुः क्षुपो रघुर्भानुः कृशाश्वः सगरः शलः। विमाने देवराजस्य समदृश्यन्त सुप्रभाः ॥०४-५१-१०॥
manuḥ kṣupo raghur bhānuḥ kṛśāśvaḥ sagaraḥ śalaḥ। vimāne devarājasya samadṛśyanta
suprabhāḥ ॥04-51-10॥

Manu, Kṣupa, Raghu, Bhānu, Kṛśāśva, Sagara, and Śala, splendid in appearance, were seen

अग्नेरीशस्य सोमस्य वरुणस्य प्रजापतेः। तथा धातुर्विधातुश्च कुबेरस्य यमस्य च ॥०४-५१-११॥

अलम्बुसोग्रसेनस्य गन्धर्वस्य च तुम्बुरोः। यथाभागं यथोद्देशं विमानानि चकाशिरे ॥०४-५१-१२॥

The aerial cars of Alambusa, Ugrasena, the Gandharva, and Tumburu appeared according to

सर्वदेवनिकायाश्च सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः। अर्जुनस्य कुरूणां च द्रष्टुं युद्धमुपागताः ॥०४-५१-१३॥
sarvadevanikāyāś ca siddhāś ca paramarṣayaḥ। arjunasya kurūṇāṃ ca draṣṭuṃ yuddham
upāgatāḥ॥04-51-13॥
[सर्वदेवनिकायाः (sarva-deva-nikāyāḥ) - all divine assemblies; च (ca) - and; सिद्धाः
(siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; च (ca) - and; परमर्षयः (parama-ṛṣayaḥ) - supreme sages;
अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; च (ca) - and;
द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; युद्धम् (yuddham) - the battle; उपागताः (upāgatāḥ) - have
come;]
(All divine assemblies and perfected beings and supreme sages, of Arjuna and of the
Kurus, to see the battle, have come.)
All the divine hosts, accomplished beings, and supreme sages have come to witness the
battle of Arjuna and the Kurus. (04-51-13)
दिव्यानां तत्र माल्यानां गन्धः पुण्योऽथ सर्वशः। प्रससार वसन्ताग्रे वनानामिव पुष्पिताम्
॥०४-५१-१४॥
divyānāṃ tatra mālyānāṃ gandhaḥ puṇyo'tha sarvaśaḥ। prasasāra vasantāgre vanānām iva
puṣpitām ॥04-51-14॥
[दिव्यानां (divyānām) - of divine; of celestial; of excellent; तत्र (tatra) - there;
माल्यानां (mālyānām) - of garlands; of flower wreaths; गन्धः (gandhaḥ) - fragrance; scent;
पुण्यः (puṇyaḥ) - pure; auspicious; meritorious; अथ (atha) - then; moreover; सर्वशः
(sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; everywhere; प्रससार (prasasāra) - spread; extended; वसन्ताग्रे
(vasantāgre) - in the beginning of spring; वनानाम् (vanānām) - of forests; इव (iva) - like;
as; पुष्पिताम् (puṣpitām) - blossoming; covered with flowers;]
(Of divine garlands there, the fragrance pure then entirely spread, as at the beginning
of spring of forests like blossoming.)
There, the pure fragrance of the divine garlands spread everywhere, like that of
blossoming forests at the beginning of spring. (04-51-14)
रक्तारक्तानि देवानां समदृश्यन्त तिष्ठताम्। आतपत्राणि वासांसि स्रजश्च व्यजनानि च ॥०४-५१-१५॥
raktāraktāni devānāṃ samadṛśyanta tiṣṭhatām। ātapatrāṇi vāsāṃsi srajaś ca vyajanāni ca
॥04-51-15॥
[रक्तारक्तानि (raktāraktāni) - red and very red; (raktāni: red; araktāni: very red;)
देवानां (devānāṃ) - of the gods; समदृश्यन्त (samadṛśyanta) - were seen together; तिष्ठताम्
(tiṣṭhatām) - for those standing; आतपत्राणि (ātapatrāṇi) - umbrellas; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) -
garments; स्रजः (srajaḥ) - garlands; च (ca) - and; व्यजनानि (vyajanāni) - fans; च (ca) -
and;]
(Red and very red of the gods were seen together for those standing: umbrellas, garments,
garlands and fans and.)
Umbrellas, garments, garlands, and fans in shades of red and scarlet, belonging to the
gods, were seen together for those standing. (04-51-15)
उपशाम्यद्रजो भौमं सर्वं व्याप्तं मरीचिभिः। दिव्यान्गन्धानुपादाय वायुर्योधानसेवत ॥०४-५१-१६॥
upaśāmyadrajo bhaumaṃ sarvaṃ vyāptaṃ marīcibhiḥ. divyāngandhānupādāya vāyuryodhānasevata

[उपशाम्यद्रजो (upaśāmyadrajaḥ) - settled-dust; भौमं (bhaumam) - earthly; सर्वं (sarvam) -
all; व्याप्तं (vyāptam) - pervaded; मरीचिभिः (marīcibhiḥ) - by rays; दिव्यान् (divyān) -
divine; गन्धान् (gandhān) - fragrances; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; वायुः (vāyuḥ) -
wind; योधान् (yodhān) - warriors; असेवत (asevata) - attended;]
(With the dust settled, all the earth was pervaded by rays. Having taken the divine
fragrances, the wind attended the warriors.)
After the dust had settled, the earth was filled with rays. The wind, carrying divine
fragrances, moved among the warriors. (04-51-16)
प्रभासितमिवाकाशं चित्ररूपमलङ्कृतम्। सम्पतद्भिः स्थितैश्चैव नानारत्नावभासितैः ॥
विमानैर्विविधैश्चित्रैरुपानीतैः सुरोत्तमैः ॥०४-५१-१७॥
prabhāsitam ivākāśaṃ citrarūpam alaṅkṛtam। sampatadbhiḥ sthitaiś caiva
nānā-ratnāvabhāsitaiḥ॥ vimānair vividhaiz citrair upānītaiḥ surottamaiḥ॥04-51-17॥
[प्रभासितम् (prabhāsitam) - shining; इव (iva) - like; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - sky; चित्ररूपम्
(citrarūpam) - variously formed; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned; सम्पतद्भिः (sampatadbhiḥ)
- moving; स्थितैः (sthitaiḥ) - stationed; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नानारत्नावभासितैः
(nānā-ratnāvabhāsitaiḥ) - shining with many gems; विमानैः (vimānaiḥ) - with palaces
(celestial chariots); विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; चित्रैः (citraiḥ) - resplendent;
उपानीतैः (upānītaiḥ) - brought; सुरोत्तमैः (surottamaiḥ) - by best of the gods;]
(Shining like the sky, variegated in form, adorned, moving and also stationed, shining
with many gems; with palaces, various, resplendent, brought by the best of the gods.)
It shone like the sky, adorned in various resplendent forms, and was lit with many kinds
of jewels, with celestial palaces—some moving, some stationary—brought by the best of the
