एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र महावीर्यपराक्रमः। आजगाम महासत्त्वः कृपः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥ अर्जुनं प्रति संयोद्धुं युद्धार्थी स महारथः ॥०४-५२-१॥
etasminn-antare tatra mahāvīrya-parākramaḥ। ājagāma mahāsattvaḥ kṛpaḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ॥ arjunaṃ prati saṃyoddhuṃ yuddhārthī sa mahārathaḥ॥04-52-1॥
[एतस्मिन्फन्तरे (etasminn-antare) - in this interval; तत्र (tatra) - there; महावीर्यपराक्रमः (mahāvīrya-parākramaḥ) - one of great energy and valor; आजहाम (ājagāma) - arrived; महासत्त्वः (mahāsattvaḥ) - having great courage; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; शस्त्रभृतां (śastrabhṛtām) - of weapon-bearers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; अर्जुनं (arjunaṃ) - Arjuna; प्रति (prati) - towards; संयोद्धुम् (saṃyoddhum) - to fight; युद्धार्थी (yuddhārthī) - desiring battle; स (sa) - he; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior;]
(In this interval there great valor and energy (one) arrived, having great courage, Kṛpa, the best of weapon-bearers. Towards Arjuna to fight desiring battle, he (that) great chariot-warrior.)
Meanwhile, there arrived at that place Kṛpa, the bravest among weapon-bearers, possessing great energy and courage. That great chariot-warrior, desirous of battle, had come to fight Arjuna. (04-52-1)
तौ रथौ सूर्यसङ्काशौ योत्स्यमानौ महाबलौ। शारदाविव जीमूतौ व्यरोचेतां व्यवस्थितौ ॥०४-५२-२॥
tau rathau sūryasaṅkāśau yotsyamānau mahābalau। śāradāviva jīmūtau vyarocetāṃ vyavasthitau ॥04-52-2॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; रथौ (rathau) - chariots; सूर्यसङ्काशौ (sūryasaṅkāśau) - radiant like the sun; योत्स्यमानौ (yotsyamānau) - about to fight; महाबलौ (mahābalau) - of great strength; शारदाविव (śāradāviva) - like (iva) autumn (śārada) clouds (jīmūtau); जीमूतौ (jīmūtau) - clouds; व्यरोचेतां (vyarocetāṃ) - shone; व्यवस्थितौ (vyavasthitau) - standing (firmly);]
(Those two chariots, radiant like the sun, about to fight, of great strength, like autumn clouds, shone, being positioned.)
Those two powerful warriors, standing in their chariots shining like the sun, ready for battle, stood there resplendent like clouds in the autumn sky. (04-52-2)
पार्थोऽपि विश्रुतं लोके गाण्डीवं परमायुधम्। विकृष्य चिक्षेप बहून्नाराचान्मर्मभेदिनः ॥०४-५२-३॥
pārtho'pi viśrutaṃ loke gāṇḍīvaṃ paramāyudham। vikṛṣya cikṣepa bahūnnārācānmarmabhedinaḥ ॥04-52-3॥
[पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; son of Pṛthā; अपि (api) - also; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - famous; renowned; लोके (loke) - in the world; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva; (Arjuna's bow); परमायुधम् (paramāyudham) - supreme weapon; विकृष्य (vikṛṣya) - having drawn (the bow); चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - he shot; बहून् (bahūn) - many; नाराचान् (nārācān) - iron arrows; मर्मभेदिनः (marmabhedinaḥ) - piercing vital spots;]
(Arjuna also, the renowned in the world, Gāṇḍīva supreme weapon, having drawn, shot many iron arrows piercing vital spots.)
Arjuna also, wielding his renowned supreme weapon Gāṇḍīva, drew his bow and discharged many iron arrows that pierced vital points. (04-52-3)
तानप्राप्ताञ्शितैर्बाणैर्नाराचान्रक्तभोजनान्। कृपश्चिच्छेद पार्थस्य शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥०४-५२-४॥
tānaprāptāñśitairbāṇairnārācānraktabhojanān। kṛpaściccheda pārthasya śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ॥04-52-4॥
[तान् (tān) - them; प्राप्तान् (prāptān) - who had approached; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; नाराचन् (nārācān) - iron arrows; रक्तभोजनान् (raktabhojanān) - who have blood as food; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut down; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Them who had approached with sharp arrows—iron arrows whose food is blood—Kṛpa also cut down those of Pārtha by hundreds and thousands.)
Kṛpa cut down by hundreds and thousands those of Pārtha who had approached—those iron, blood-drinking sharp arrows.
ततः पार्थश्च सङ्क्रुद्धश्चित्रान्मार्गान्प्रदर्शयन्। दिशः सञ्छादयन्बाणैः प्रदिशश्च महारथः ॥०४-५२-५॥
tataḥ pārthaś ca saṅkruddhaś citrān mārgān pradarśayan | diśaḥ sañchādayan bāṇaiḥ pradiśaś ca mahārathaḥ ||04-52-5||

(Then Pārtha and, enraged, showing varied paths, covering directions with arrows and the regions, the great chariot-warrior.)
Then Pārtha, enraged, showed various paths, and the great chariot-warrior covered all directions and regions with arrows. (04-52-5)
एकच्छायमिवाकाशं प्रकुर्वन्सर्वतः प्रभुः। प्रच्छादयदमेयात्मा पार्थः शरशतैः कृपम् ॥०४-५२-६॥
ekacchāyam-ivākāśaṃ prakurvan sarvataḥ prabhuḥ। pracchādayad ameyātmā pārthaḥ śaraśataiḥ kṛpam॥04-52-6॥
[एकच्छायम्-इव (ekacchāyam-iva) - like with a single shadow; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - the sky; प्रकुर्वन् (prakurvan) - making; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - in all directions; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; प्रच्छादयत् (pracchādayat) - covered; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable nature; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); शरशतैः (śaraśataiḥ) - with hundreds of arrows; कृपम् (kṛpam) - Kṛpa (the name of the person);]
(Like covering the sky with a single shadow, the lord of immeasurable nature, Pārtha, covered Kṛpa in all directions with hundreds of arrows.)
Pārtha, whose nature is immeasurable, like making the sky one shadow, covered Kṛpa in all directions with hundreds of arrows. (04-52-6)
स शरैरर्पितः क्रुद्धः शितैरग्निशिखोपमैः। तूर्णं शरसहस्रेण पार्थमप्रतिमौजसम् ॥ अर्पयित्वा महात्मानं ननाद समरे कृपः ॥०४-५२-७॥
sa śarairarpitaḥ kruddhaḥ śitairagniśikhopamaiḥ। tūrṇaṃ śarasahasreṇa pārthamapratimaujasam ॥ arpayitvā mahātmānaṃ nanāda samare kṛpaḥ ॥04-52-7॥
[स (sa) - he; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अर्पितः (arpitaḥ) - afflicted; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; अग्निशिखोपमैः (agniśikhopamaiḥ) - like flames of fire; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; शर-सहस्रेण (śara-sahasreṇa) - with a thousand arrows; पार्थम् (pārtham) - at Pārtha; अप्रतिम-औजसम् (apratima-ojasam) - of incomparable vigor; अर्पयित्वा (arpayitvā) - having cast; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; ननाद (nanāda) - roared; समरे (samare) - in battle; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa;]
(He, afflicted with arrows, angry, with sharp ones like flames of fire, quickly with a thousand arrows at Pārtha of incomparable vigor, having cast at the great-souled one, Kṛpa roared in battle.)
He, enraged, afflicted Pārtha of unmatched vigor with sharp arrows like fire-flames, and, having swiftly cast a thousand arrows at the great-souled one, Kṛpa roared on the battlefield. (04-52-7)
ततः कनकपुङ्खाग्रैर्वीरः संनतपर्वभिः। त्वरन्गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तैरर्जुनस्तस्य वाजिनः ॥ चतुर्भिश्चतुरस्तीक्ष्णैरविध्यत्परमेषुभिः ॥०४-५२-८॥
tataḥ kanakapuṁkhāgrair vīraḥ sannataparbhabhiḥ। tvaran gāṇḍīva-nirmuktair arjunaḥ tasya vājinaḥ॥ caturbhiś caturas tīkṣṇair avidhyat parameṣubhiḥ॥04-52-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कनकपुङ्खाग्रैः (kanakapuṁkhāgraiḥ) - with golden-feathered tips; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; संनतपर्वभिः (sannataparbhabhiḥ) - with curved shafts; त्वरन् (tvaran) - hastening; गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तैः (gāṇḍīvanirmuktaiḥ) - shot from the Gāṇḍīva; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तस्य (tasya) - his; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - horses; चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - with four; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; तीक्ष्णैः (tīkṣṇaiḥ) - sharp; अविध्यत् (avidhyat) - pierced; परमेषुभिः (parameṣubhiḥ) - with supreme arrows;]
(Then, with golden-feathered tips, the hero, with curved shafts, hastening, with arrows shot from the Gāṇḍīva, Arjuna (pierced) his horses with four, four sharp, with supreme arrows.)
Then, the hero Arjuna, swiftly shot four supreme, sharp, golden-feathered arrows from his Gāṇḍīva and pierced his (opponent's) four horses. (04-52-8)
ते हया निशितैर्विद्धा ज्वलद्भिरिव पन्नगैः। उत्पेतुः सहसा सर्वे कृपः स्थानादथाच्यवत् ॥०४-५२-९॥
te hayā niśitairviddhā jvaladbhiriva pannagaiḥ utpetuḥ sahasā sarve kṛpaḥ sthānādathācyavat ॥04-52-9॥
[ते (te) - they; हया (hayā) - horses; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - by sharp; विद्धा (viddhā) - pierced; ज्वलद्भिः (jvaladbhiḥ) - by blazing; इव (iva) - as if; पन्नगैः (pannagaiḥ) - by serpents; उत्पेतुः (utpetuḥ) - sprang up; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from the place; अथ (atha) - then; अच्यवत् (acyavat) - was dislodged;]
(They horses by sharp pierced by blazing as if by serpents sprang up suddenly all; Kṛpa from the place then was dislodged.)
Those horses, pierced by sharp-pointed (arrows) blazing as if by serpents, all suddenly sprang up; then Kṛpa was dislodged from his place. (04-52-9)
च्युतं तु गौतमं स्थानात्समीक्ष्य कुरुनन्दनः। नाविध्यत्परवीरघ्नो रक्षमाणोऽस्य गौरवम् ॥०४-५२-१०॥
cyutaṃ tu gautamaṃ sthānāt samīkṣya kurunandanaḥ। nāvidhyat paravīraghno rakṣamāṇo 'sya gauravam ॥04-52-10॥
[च्युतं (cyutam) - fallen; तु (tu) - but; गौतमं (gautamam) - Gautama (proper noun); स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from place; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having seen; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - son of the Kurus (Arjuna); न (na) - not; अविध्यत् (avidhyat) - pierced, killed; परवीरघ्नः (paravīraghnaḥ) - destroyer of enemy heroes; रक्षमाणः (rakṣamāṇaḥ) - protecting; अस्य (asya) - his; गौरवम् (gauravam) - honor, dignity;]
(Having seen Gautama fallen from his place, but the son of the Kurus, the destroyer of enemy heroes, did not pierce (him), protecting his honor.)
But seeing Gautama fallen from his place, the son of the Kurus, the destroyer of enemy heroes, did not strike him, protecting his honor. (04-52-10)
स तु लब्ध्वा पुनः स्थानं गौतमः सव्यसाचिनम्। विव्याध दशभिर्बाणैस्त्वरितः कङ्कपत्रिभिः ॥०४-५२-११॥
sa tu labdhvā punaḥ sthānaṃ gautamaḥ savyasācinam। vivyādha daśabhirbāṇais tvaritaḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ ॥04-52-11॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having attained; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; स्थानं (sthānam) - position; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; सव्यसाचिनम् (savyasācinam) - Savyasācin (Arjuna); विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; कङ्कपत्रिभिः (kaṅkapatribhiḥ) - with arrows having feathers of the heron;]
(He but having attained again position Gautama Savyasācin (Arjuna) pierced with ten arrows quickly with arrows having feathers of the heron.)
But, regaining his position, Gautama quickly pierced Savyasācin (Arjuna) with ten arrows tipped with heron-feathered shafts. (04-52-11)
ततः पार्थो धनुस्तस्य भल्लेन निशितेन च। चिच्छेदैकेन भूयश्च हस्ताच्चापमथाहरत् ॥०४-५२-१२॥
tataḥ pārtho dhanus tasya bhallena niśitena ca। cicched aikena bhūyaś ca hastāc cāpam athāharat ॥04-52-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; तस्य (tasya) - his; भल्लेन (bhallena) - with an arrow (barbed); निशितेन (niśitena) - sharp; च (ca) - and; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut; एकेन (eikena) - with one (arrow); भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; हस्तात् (hastāt) - from (his) hand; चापम् (cāpam) - the bow; अथ (atha) - then; आहरत् (āharat) - drew away;]
(Then Pārtha his bow with a sharp arrow and cut with one. Again and from (his) hand the bow then drew away.)
Then Pārtha (Arjuna) with a sharp arrow cut his bow with one shot, and again drew away the bow from his hand. (04-52-12)
अथास्य कवचं बाणैर्निशितैर्मर्मभेदिभिः। व्यधमन्न च पार्थोऽस्य शरीरमवपीडयत् ॥०४-५२-१३॥
athāsya kavacaṃ bāṇair niśitair marmabhedibhiḥ। vyadhaman na ca pārtho'sya śarīram avapīḍayat ॥04-52-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; कवचं (kavacaṃ) - armor; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - sharp; मर्मभेदिभिः (marmabhedibhiḥ) - piercing the vital points; व्यधमन् (vyadhaman) - struck; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); अस्य (asya) - his; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; अवपीडयत् (avapīḍayat) - did oppress, did crush;]
(Then his armor with sharp arrows piercing the vital points (they) struck; and Pārtha did not oppress his body.)
Then they struck his armor with sharp arrows piercing the vital points; but Arjuna did not harm his body. (04-52-13)
तस्य निर्मुच्यमानस्य कवचात्काय आबभौ। समये मुच्यमानस्य सर्पस्येव तनुर्यथा ॥०४-५२-१४॥
tasya nirmucyāmānasya kavacāt kāya ābabhau। samaye mucyamānasya sarpasya iva tanuḥ yathā ॥04-52-14॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; निर्मुच्यमानस्य (nirmucyāmānasya) - being shed; कवचात् (kavacāt) - from the armor; कायः (kāyaḥ) - body; आबभौ (ābabhau) - appeared; समये (samaye) - at the time; मुच्यमानस्य (mucyamānasya) - being released; सर्पस्य (sarpasya) - of the serpent; इव (iva) - like; तनुः (tanuḥ) - body; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Of him, being shed from the armor, the body appeared; at the time, of the serpent being released, like the body as.)
As his armor was being shed, his body appeared just like the body of a serpent at the time it casts off its slough. (04-52-14)
छिन्ने धनुषि पार्थेन सोऽन्यदादाय कार्मुकम्। चकार गौतमः सज्यं तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥०४-५२-१५॥
chinne dhanuṣi pārthena so'ñyad-ādāya kārmukam| cakāra gautamaḥ sajyaṃ tad-adbhutam-iva-abhavat ॥04-52-15॥
[छिन्ने (chinne) - when (it was) broken; धनुषि (dhanuṣi) - bow; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha (Arjuna); सः (saḥ) - he; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; कार्मुकम् (kārmukam) - bow; चकार (cakāra) - made (it ready); गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama; सज्यम् (sajyam) - strung; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(When the bow was broken by Pārtha, he, having taken another bow, Gautama made it strung; that became as if wonderful.)
When the bow was broken by Arjuna, Gautama took another bow and strung it, and that appeared as if wonderful. (04-52-15)
स तदप्यस्य कौन्तेयश्चिच्छेद नतपर्वणा। एवमन्यानि चापानि बहूनि कृतहस्तवत् ॥ शारद्वतस्य चिच्छेद पाण्डवः परवीरहा ॥०४-५२-१६॥
sa tad apy asya kaunteyaś ciccheda nataparvaṇā। evam anyāni cāpāni bahūni kṛtahastavat ॥ śāradvatasya ciccheda pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā ॥04-52-16॥
[स (sa) - he; तत् (tat) - that; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - his; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kuntī; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut; नतपर्वणा (nataparvaṇā) - with curved joint (bow); एवम् (evam) - thus; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; चापानि (cāpāni) - bows; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; कृतहस्तवत् (kṛtahastavat) - from skilled-hand person; शारद्वतस्य (śāradvatasya) - of Śāradvata (the son of Śaradvat, i.e. Kṛpa); चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes;]
(He that also, his, Kuntī's son cut with curved-jointed (bow). Thus other bows, many, from skilled-hand person. Of Śāradvata, he cut, the Pāṇḍava, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
He, the son of Kuntī, cut that also (the bow) of his (opponent) with his curved-jointed bow. Thus he cut many other bows from the hands of (the skilled) Śāradvata. The Pāṇḍava, the destroyer of enemy heroes, cut Śāradvata's (bow too). (04-52-16)
स छिन्नधनुरादाय अथ शक्तिं प्रतापवान्। प्राहिणोत्पाण्डुपुत्राय प्रदीप्तामशनीमिव ॥०४-५२-१७॥
sa chinnadhanur-ādāya atha śaktiṁ pratāpavān. prāhiṇot pāṇḍu-putrāya pradīptām aśanīm iva ॥04-52-17॥
[स (sa) - he; छिन्नधनुः (chinna-dhanuḥ) - with broken bow; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; अथ (atha) - then; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - lance; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - he sent; पाण्डुपुत्राय (pāṇḍu-putrāya) - to the son of Pāṇḍu; प्रदीप्ताम् (pradīptām) - blazing; अशनीम् (aśanīm) - thunderbolt; इव (iva) - like;]
(He, with broken bow having taken then a lance, the mighty one sent to the son of Pāṇḍu a blazing thunderbolt-like (weapon).)
Then, having taken up a lance after his bow was broken, the mighty warrior sent it to the son of Pāṇḍu like a blazing thunderbolt. (04-52-17)
तामर्जुनस्तदायान्तीं शक्तिं हेमविभूषिताम्। वियद्गतां महोल्काभां चिच्छेद दशभिः शरैः ॥ सापतद्दशधा छिन्ना भूमौ पार्थेन धीमता ॥०४-५२-१८॥
tām arjunaḥ tad āyāntīṃ śaktiṃ hema-vibhūṣitām। viyat-gatāṃ maholkābhāṃ ciccheda daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ ॥ sā apatad daśadhā chinnā bhūmau pārthena dhīmatā ॥04-52-18॥
[ताम् (ताम्) (tām) - her; अर्जुनः (अर्जुनः) (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तत् (तत्) (tad) - that; आयान्तीं (आयान्तीम्) (āyāntīm) - approaching; शक्तिम् (शक्तिम्) (śaktim) - spear; हेमविभूषिताम् (हेम-विभूषिताम्) (hema-vibhūṣitām) - gold-adorned; वियद्गताम् (वियत्-गताम्) (viyat-gatām) - that had gone through the sky; महो्ल्काभाम् (महा-उल्का-आभाम्) (maholkābhām) - having the appearance of a great meteor; चिच्छेद (चिच्छेद) (ciccheda) - cut; दशभिः (दशभिः) (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; शरैः (शरैः) (śaraiḥ) - arrows; सा (सा) (sā) - she; अपतत् (अपतत्) (apatat) - fell; दशधा (दशधा) (daśadhā) - in ten pieces; छिन्ना (छिन्ना) (chinnā) - cut; भूमौ (भूमौ) (bhūmau) - on the ground; पार्थेन (पार्थेन) (pārthena) - by Pārtha (Arjuna); धीमता (धीमता) (dhīmatā) - by the wise;]
(Her, Arjuna, that approaching spear, gold-adorned, that had gone through the sky, having the appearance of a great meteor, cut with ten arrows. She fell, cut in ten pieces, on the ground by Pārtha, the wise.)
Arjuna cut that gold-adorned, meteor-like spear, which was coming through the sky, with ten arrows. Severed into ten pieces by the wise Pārtha, it fell to the ground. (04-52-18)
युगमध्ये तु भल्लैस्तु ततः स सधनुः कृपः। तमाशु निशितैः पार्थं बिभेद दशभिः शरैः ॥०४-५२-१९॥
yugamadhye tu bhallais tu tataḥ sa sadhanuh kṛpaḥ। tam āśu niśitaiḥ pārthaṃ bibheda daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ॥04-52-19॥
[युगमध्ये (yugamadhye) - in the midst of the arena; तु (tu) - but; भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - with arrows (broad-headed); तु (tu) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; सधनुः (sadhanuh) - with bow; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpaḥ (Kripa, proper noun); तम् (tam) - him; आशु (āśu) - quickly; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Partha (Arjuna, proper noun); बिभेद (bibheda) - pierced; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows;]
(In the midst of the arena, but then he, with bow, Kṛpaḥ, him quickly with sharp (arrows), Partha, pierced with ten arrows.)
But there, in the midst of the arena, Kṛpa, with his bow, quickly pierced Partha (Arjuna) with ten sharp arrows. (04-52-19)
ततः पार्थो महातेजा विशिखानग्नितेजसः। चिक्षेप समरे क्रुद्धस्त्रयोदश शिलाशितान् ॥०४-५२-२०॥
tataḥ pārtho mahāteja viśikhān agnitejasaḥ। cikṣepe samare kruddhaḥ trayodaśa śilāśitān ॥04-52-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); महातेजा (mahātejaḥ) - of great brightness; विशिखान् (viśikhān) - arrows; अग्नितेजसः (agnitejasaḥ) - having the brilliance of fire; चिक्षेप (cikṣepe) - he discharged; समरे (samare) - in battle; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen; शिलाशितान् (śilāśitān) - stone-tipped;]
(Then Pārtha, of great brightness, arrows having the brilliance of fire, discharged in battle, angry, thirteen, stone-tipped.)
Then Pārtha (Arjuna), possessing great radiance, angrily discharged thirteen stone-tipped arrows, blazing like fire, in the midst of battle. (04-52-20)
अथास्य युगमेकेन चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान्। षष्ठेन च शिरः कायाच्छरेण रथसारथेः ॥०४-५२-२१॥
athāsya yugam ekena caturbhiś caturō hayān | ṣaṣṭhēna ca śiraḥ kāyāc charēṇa rathasāratheḥ ॥04-52-21॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; अस्य (asya) - of him; of this; युगम् (yugam) - yoke; एकेन (ekena) - with one; चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - with four; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; हयान् (hayān) - horses; षष्ठेन (ṣaṣṭhena) - with the sixth; च (ca) - and; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; कायात् (kāyāt) - from the body; शरेण (śareṇa) - with an arrow; रथसारथेः (rathasāratheḥ) - of the charioteer;]
(Then of him the yoke with one (arrow), with four (arrows) the four horses, with the sixth also the head from the body with an arrow of the charioteer.)
Then he severed the yoke with one arrow, the four horses with four arrows, and with the sixth arrow, the head from the body of the charioteer. (04-52-21)
त्रिभिस्त्रिवेणुं समरे द्वाभ्यामक्षौ महाबलः। द्वादशेन तु भल्लेन चकर्तास्य ध्वजं तथा ॥०४-५२-२२॥
tribhis triveṇuṃ samare dvābhyām akṣau mahābalaḥ। dvādaśena tu bhallena cakartā'sya dhvajaṃ tathā॥04-52-22॥
[त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - with three; त्रिवेणुं (triveṇum) - three bamboo arrows; समरे (samare) - in battle; द्वाभ्याम् (dvābhyām) - with two; अक्षौ (akṣau) - axle (of chariot); महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one; द्वादशेन (dvādaśena) - with twelve; तु (tu) - but; भल्लेन (bhallena) - with a broad-headed arrow; चकर्त (cakarta) - cut; अस्य (asya) - his; ध्वजं (dhvajam) - banner; तथा (tathā) - also; ॥०४-५२-२२॥ (॥04-52-22॥) -;]
(With three, the three-bamboo arrow in battle, with two, the axle, the mighty one; with twelve, but, with a broad-headed arrow, cut his banner also.)
Using three arrows, he struck the triple-bamboo bow in battle; with two, the axle, the mighty warrior; and then with twelve, but with a broad-headed arrow, he cut down his banner as well. (04-52-22)
ततो वज्रनिकाशेन फल्गुनः प्रहसन्निव। त्रयोदशेनेन्द्रसमः कृपं वक्षस्यताडयत् ॥०४-५२-२३॥
tato vajranikāśena phalgunaḥ prahasanniva। trayodaśenendrasamaḥ kṛpaṃ vakṣasyatāḍayat ॥04-52-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वज्रनिकाशेन (vajranikāśena) - with (a) thunderbolt-like; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); प्रहसन्निव (prahasanniva) - smiling as if; त्रयोदशेन (trayodaśena) - with the thirteenth (arrow); इन्द्रसमः (indrasamaḥ) - equal to Indra; कृपम् (kṛpam) - Kripa; वक्षस्य (vakṣasi) - in/on the chest; अताडयत् (atāḍayat) - struck;]
(Then, with (an) arrow like a thunderbolt, Phalguna, smiling as if, with the thirteenth (arrow), equal to Indra, struck Kripa on the chest.)
Then Phalguna (Arjuna), as if smiling, struck Kripa on the chest with the thirteenth arrow, using a shaft like a thunderbolt, being equal to Indra. (04-52-23)
स छिन्नधन्वा विरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः। गदापाणिरवप्लुत्य तूर्णं चिक्षेप तां गदाम् ॥०४-५२-२४॥
sa chinnadhanvā viratho hatāśvo hatasārathiḥ. gadāpāṇiravaplutya tūrṇaṃ cikṣepa tāṃ gadām ॥04-52-24॥
[स (sa) - he; छिन्नधन्वा (chinna-dhanvā) - bow broken; विरथः (virathaḥ) - deprived of chariot; हताश्वः (hata-aśvaḥ) - horses slain; हतसारथिः (hata-sārathiḥ) - charioteer killed; गदापाणिः (gadā-pāṇiḥ) - mace in hand; अवप्लुत्य (avaplutya) - having sprung down; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - he hurled; ताम् (tām) - that; गदाम् (gadām) - mace;]
(He, with bow broken, deprived of chariot, horses slain, charioteer killed, with mace in hand, having sprung down quickly hurled that mace.)
He—his bow broken, his chariot lost, his horses and charioteer slain—seized his mace in hand, leapt down quickly, and hurled that mace. (04-52-24)
सा तु मुक्ता गदा गुर्वी कृपेण सुपरिष्कृता। अर्जुनेन शरैर्नुन्ना प्रतिमार्गमथागमत् ॥०४-५२-२५॥
sā tu muktā gadā gurvī kṛpeṇa supariṣkṛtā। arjunena śarair nunnā pratimārgam athāgamat ॥04-52-25॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; मुक्ता (muktā) - released; गदा (gadā) - mace; गुर्वी (gurvī) - heavy; कृपेण (kṛpeṇa) - by Kṛpa (the proper noun); सुपरिष्कृता (supariṣkṛtā) - well-adorned; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; नुन्ना (nunnā) - repelled; प्रतिमार्गम् (pratimārgam) - back along the path; अथ (atha) - then; आगमत् (āgamat) - came;]
(She, but, the heavy mace well-adorned by Kṛpa, having been released, having been repelled by Arjuna with arrows, then came back along the path.)
But that heavy mace, which had been well-adorned by Kṛpa and released, was driven back along its path by Arjuna's arrows and then returned. (04-52-25)
ततो योधाः परीप्सन्तः शारद्वतममर्षणम्। सर्वतः समरे पार्थं शरवर्षैरवाकिरन् ॥०४-५२-२६॥
tato yodhāḥ parīpsantaḥ śāradvatam-amarṣaṇam. sarvataḥ samare pārthaṃ śara-varṣaiḥ avākiran ॥04-52-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; परीप्सन्तः (parīpsantaḥ) - desiring to obtain; शारद्वतममर्षणम् (śāradvatam-amarṣaṇam) - Śāradvata's son (Aśvatthāman), inciting; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; समरे (samare) - in the battle; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); शरवर्षैः (śara-varṣaiḥ) - with showers of arrows; अवाकिरन् (avākiran) - showered down;]
(Then the warriors, desiring to obtain (victory), with Śāradvata's son inciting, from all sides in the battle Pārtha with showers of arrows showered down.)
Then, at the urging of Śāradvata's son, the warriors, wishing for victory, showered Pārtha with volleys of arrows from all sides in the battle. (04-52-26)
ततो विराटस्य सुतः सव्यमावृत्य वाजिनः। यमकं मण्डलं कृत्वा तान्योधान्प्रत्यवारयत् ॥०४-५२-२७॥
tato virāṭasya sutaḥ savyam āvṛtya vājinaḥ। yamakaṃ maṇḍalaṃ kṛtvā tān yodhān pratyavārayat ॥04-52-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then;, विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa;, सुतः (sutaḥ) - son;, सव्यम् (savyam) - to the left;, आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having turned;, वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - horses;, यमकं (yamakaṃ) - double;, मण्डलं (maṇḍalam) - circular movement;, कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made;, तान् (tān) - those;, योधान् (yodhān) - warriors;, प्रत्यवारयत् (pratyavārayat) - he obstructed;,;]
(Then the son of Virāṭa, having turned his horses to the left, making a double circular movement, those warriors he obstructed.)
Then, the son of Virāṭa turned his horses to the left and, making a double circular movement, blocked those warriors. (04-52-27)
ततः कृपमुपादाय विरथं ते नरर्षभाः। अपाजह्रुर्महावेगाः कुन्तीपुत्राद्धनञ्जयात् ॥०४-५२-२८॥
tataḥ kṛpam-upādāya virathaṃ te nararṣabhāḥ। apājahruḥ mahāvegāḥ kuntī-putrāt dhanaṃjayāt ॥04-52-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृपम् (kṛpam) - Kṛpa; उपादाय (upādāya) - after taking; विरथम् (viratham) - chariotless; ते (te) - they; नरर्षभाः (nararṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; अपाजह्रुः (apājahruḥ) - led away; महावेगाः (mahāvegāḥ) - of great speed; कुन्तीपुत्रात् (kuntī-putrāt) - from the son of Kuntī; धनञ्जयात् (dhanaṃjayāt) - from Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna);]
(Then, after taking Kṛpa who was chariotless, they, the bulls among men of great speed, led (him) away from the son of Kuntī, from Dhanaṃjaya.)
Then, those bulls among men of great speed took away the chariotless Kṛpa from the son of Kuntī, Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna). (04-52-28)
