यत्रैषा काञ्चनी वेदी प्रदीप्ताग्निशिखोपमा। उच्छ्रिता काञ्चने दण्डे पताकाभिरलङ्कृता ॥ तत्र मां वह भद्रं ते द्रोणानीकाय मारिष ॥०४-५३-१॥
yatraiṣā kāñcanī vedī pradīptāgniśikhopamā। ucchritā kāñcane daṇḍe patākābhir-alaṅkṛtā ॥ tatra māṃ vaha bhadraṃ te droṇānīkāya māriṣa ॥04-53-1॥

अश्वाः शोणाः प्रकाशन्ते बृहन्तश्चारुवाहिनः। स्निग्धविद्रुमसङ्काशास्ताम्रास्याः प्रियदर्शनाः ॥ युक्ता रथवरे यस्य सर्वशिक्षाविशारदाः ॥०४-५३-२॥

(Horses, red, shine, large, having beautiful speed, having the luster of polished coral, copper-mouthed, pleasant to see, yoked in an excellent chariot, of whom, skilled in all trainings.)

दीर्घबाहुर्महातेजा बलरूपसमन्वितः। सर्वलोकेषु विख्यातो भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ॥०४-५३-३॥
dīrghabāhur mahātejā balarūpasamanvitaḥ। sarvalokeṣu vikhyāto bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ॥04-53-3॥

Bhāradvāja, long-armed, possessing great brilliance and strength, known throughout all worlds, was glorious. (04-53-3)
बुद्ध्या तुल्यो ह्युशनसा बृहस्पतिसमो नये। वेदास्तथैव चत्वारो ब्रह्मचर्यं तथैव च ॥०४-५३-४॥
buddhyā tulyo hy uśanasā bṛhaspatisamo naye। vedās tathaiva catvāro brahmacaryaṃ tathaiva ca ॥04-53-4॥

He is equal in wisdom to Uśanas, equal to Bṛhaspati in policy; he possesses the four Vedas and lives in celibacy likewise. (04-53-4)
ससंहाराणि दिव्यानि सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि मारिष। धनुर्वेदश्च कार्त्स्न्येन यस्मिन्नित्यं प्रतिष्ठितः ॥०४-५३-५॥
sasaṃhārāṇi divyāni sarvāṇyastrāṇi māriṣa। dhanurvedaś ca kārtsnyena yasminnityaṃ pratiṣṭhitaḥ॥04-53-5॥

O noble one, all divine weapons with their powers of withdrawal, and the entire science of archery, are always established in him. (04-53-5)
क्षमा दमश्च सत्यं च आनृशंस्यमथार्जवम्। एते चान्ये च बहवो गुणा यस्मिन्द्विजोत्तमे ॥०४-५३-६॥
kṣamā damaś ca satyaṃ ca ānṛśaṃsyam athārjavam. ete cānye ca bahavo guṇā yasmin dvijottame ॥04-53-6॥

(Forbearance, self-control, and truth, and non-cruelty, and straightforwardness; these and many other qualities in whom, in the best of the twice-born.)

तेनाहं योद्धुमिच्छामि महाभागेन संयुगे। तस्मात्त्वं प्रापयाचार्यं क्षिप्रमुत्तर वाहय ॥०४-५३-७॥
tenāhaṃ yoddhum icchāmi mahābhāgena saṃyuge। tasmāt tvaṃ prāpaya ācāryam kṣipram uttara vāhaya ॥04-53-7॥

(By him I desire to fight, by the greatly fortunate one, in battle. Therefore, you cause the teacher to be brought, quickly make the chariot be driven.)
I want to fight with him, the greatly fortunate one, in battle. Therefore, bring the teacher and quickly have the chariot driven. (04-53-7)

तमापतन्तं वेगेन पाण्डवं रथिनां वरम्। द्रोणः प्रत्युद्ययौ पार्थं मत्तो मत्तमिव द्विपम् ॥०४-५३-९॥
tam āpatantaṃ vegena pāṇḍavaṃ rathināṃ varam। droṇaḥ pratyudyayau pārthaṃ matto mattam iva dvipam॥04-53-9॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - rushing; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava; रथिनां (rathināṃ) - of chariot-warriors; वरम् (varam) - the best; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; प्रत्युद्ययौ (pratyudyayau) - went forth to meet; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - enraged; मत्तम् (mattam) - to the enraged; इव (iva) - like; द्विपम् (dvipam) - elephant;]
(Him rushing with speed, the Pāṇḍava, the best of chariot-warriors, Droṇa went forth to meet Pārtha, enraged, like (an enraged) elephant to another enraged elephant.)
Droṇa, enraged, advanced to confront Pārtha, as an enraged elephant faces another enraged elephant, when he saw the Pāṇḍava, the best of chariot-warriors, rushing towards him. (04-53-9)
ततः प्राध्मापयच्छङ्खं भेरीशतनिनादितम्। प्रचुक्षुभे बलं सर्वमुद्धूत इव सागरः ॥०४-५३-१०॥
tataḥ prādhmāpayac chaṅkhaṃ bherīśata-nināditam। pracukṣubhe balaṃ sarvam uddhūta iva sāgaraḥ ॥04-53-10॥

अथ शोणान्सदश्वांस्तान्हंसवर्णैर्मनोजवैः। मिश्रितान्समरे दृष्ट्वा व्यस्मयन्त रणे जनाः ॥०४-५३-११॥

तौ रथौ वीर्यसम्पन्नौ दृष्ट्वा सङ्ग्राममूर्धनि। आचार्यशिष्यावजितौ कृतविद्यौ मनस्विनौ ॥०४-५३-१२॥

समाश्लिष्टौ तदान्योन्यं द्रोणपार्थौ महाबलौ। दृष्ट्वा प्राकम्पत मुहुर्भरतानां महद्बलम् ॥०४-५३-१३॥
samāśliṣṭau tad anyonyaṁ droṇa-pārthau mahā-balau. dṛṣṭvā prākampata muhur bharatānāṁ mahad balam ॥04-53-13॥

(Then, having embraced each other, Droṇa and Pārtha, of great strength, having seen the great army of the Bharatas, trembled again and again.)

हर्षयुक्तस्तथा पार्थः प्रहसन्निव वीर्यवान्। रथं रथेन द्रोणस्य समासाद्य महारथः ॥०४-५३-१४॥

Thus, filled with joy, Pārtha (Arjuna), mighty and as if smiling, with his chariot approached the chariot of Droṇa, he—the great chariot-warrior. (04-53-14)
अभिवाद्य महाबाहुः सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः। उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा कौन्तेयः परवीरहा ॥०४-५३-१५॥
abhivādya mahābāhuḥ sāntvapūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ। uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā kaunteyaḥ paravīrahā ॥04-53-15॥

(Having dwelt indeed in the forest, abode, wishing to do counteraction, you ought not to do anger towards us, always hard to conquer in battle.)
We have indeed lived in the forest, intending to act in response. You, who are always hard to conquer in battle, ought not to be angry with us. (04-53-16)
अहं तु प्रहृते पूर्वं प्रहरिष्यामि तेऽनघ। इति मे वर्तते बुद्धिस्तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ॥०४-५३-१७॥
ahaṃ tu prahṛte pūrvaṃ prahariṣyāmi te'nagha। iti me vartate buddhistadbhavānkartumarhati ॥04-53-17॥

(I but, when struck first, will strike, your, O sinless one; thus in me stands thought; that you ought to do;)
But I think, O sinless one, that I ought to strike first when (it is) struck; that is my thought, and you ought to do that. (04-53-17)
ततोऽस्मै प्राहिणोद्द्रोणः शरानधिकविंशतिम्। अप्राप्तांश्चैव तान्पार्थश्चिच्छेद कृतहस्तवत् ॥०४-५३-१८॥
tato'smai prāhiṇod droṇaḥ śarān adhikaviṃśatim। aprāptāṃś caiva tān pārthaś ciccheda kṛtahastavat॥04-53-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; अधिकविंशतिम् (adhikaviṃśatim) - more than twenty; अप्राप्तान् (aprāptān) - not arrived; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तान् (tān) - those; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut; कृतहस्तवत् (kṛtahastavat) - like an expert-handed one;]
(Then to him Droṇa sent more than twenty arrows; and those not yet arrived, Pārtha indeed cut, like one with expert hands.)

एवं प्रववृते युद्धं भारद्वाजकिरीटिनोः। समं विमुञ्चतोः सङ्ख्ये विशिखान्दीप्ततेजसः ॥०४-५३-२०॥
evaṃ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ bhāradvāja-kirīṭinoḥ। samaṃ vimuñcatoḥ saṅkhye viśikhān dīpta-tejasaḥ॥04-53-20॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्रववृते (pravavṛte) - commenced; युद्धं (yuddham) - battle; भारद्वाजकिरीटिनोः (bhāradvāja-kirīṭinoḥ) - of Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) and Kiritin (Arjuna); समं (samaṃ) - equally; विमुञ्चतोः (vimuñcatoḥ) - releasing; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in the battle; विशिखान् (viśikhān) - arrows; दीप्ततेजसः (dīpta-tejasaḥ) - of blazing energy;]
(Thus commenced the battle of Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) and Kiritin (Arjuna), as both were equally releasing arrows in the battle with blazing energy.)
Thus, the battle began between Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) and Kiritin (Arjuna), as both, full of blazing energy, equally released arrows at each other on the battlefield. (04-53-20)
तावुभौ ख्यातकर्माणावुभौ वायुसमौ जवे। उभौ दिव्यास्त्रविदुषावुभावुत्तमतेजसौ ॥ क्षिपन्तौ शरजालानि मोहयामासतुर्नृपान् ॥०४-५३-२१॥
tāvubhau khyātakarmāṇāubhau vāyusamau jave। ubhau divyāstraviduṣāubhau uttamatejasau॥ kṣipantau śarajālāni mohayāmāsatur nṛpān॥04-53-21॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; ख्यातकर्माणौ (khyātakarmāṇau) - renowned for deeds; उभौ (ubhau) - both; वायुसमौ (vāyusamau) - equal to Wind (Vāyu) in speed; जवे (jave) - in swiftness; उभौ (ubhau) - both; दिव्यास्त्रविदुषौ (divyāstra-viduṣau) - knowers of divine weapons; उभौ (ubhau) - both; उत्तमतेजसौ (uttama-tejasau) - of highest brilliance; क्षिपन्तौ (kṣipantau) - casting; शरजालानि (śara-jālāni) - volleys of arrows; मोहयामासतुः (mohayāmāsatuḥ) - caused to be deluded; नृपान् (nṛpān) - the kings;]
(Those two, both renowned for deeds, both equal to Wind in swiftness, both knowers of divine weapons, both of highest brilliance, casting volleys of arrows, caused the kings to become deluded.)
Those two warriors, famous for their deeds and equal to the Wind in speed, both skilled in divine weapons and possessing supreme brilliance, cast volleys of arrows and bewildered the kings. (04-53-21)
व्यस्मयन्त ततो योधाः सर्वे तत्र समागताः। शरान्विसृजतोस्तूर्णं साधु साध्विति पूजयन् ॥०४-५३-२२॥
vyasmayanta tato yodhāḥ sarve tatra samāgatāḥ। śarān visṛjatos tūrṇaṃ sādhu sādhu iti pūjayan ॥04-53-22॥
[व्यस्मयन्त (vyasmayanta) - were amazed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तत्र (tatra) - there; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; विसृजतोः (visṛjatoḥ) - of the two who were discharging; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - swiftly; साधु साधु (sādhu sādhu) - 'well done! well done!'; इति (iti) - thus; पूजयन् (pūjayan) - honoring;]
(Were amazed then warriors all there assembled; of the two who were discharging arrows swiftly, 'well done! well done!' thus honoring.)
Then all the warriors assembled there were amazed, and as the two swiftly discharged arrows, they honored them saying, "Well done! Well done!" (04-53-22)
द्रोणं हि समरे कोऽन्यो योद्धुमर्हति फल्गुनात्। रौद्रः क्षत्रियधर्मोऽयं गुरुणा यदयुध्यत ॥ इत्यब्रुवञ्जनास्तत्र सङ्ग्रामशिरसि स्थिताः ॥०४-५३-२३॥
droṇaṃ hi samare ko'nyo yoddhum arhati phalgunāt. raudraḥ kṣatriyadharmo'yaṃ guruṇā yad ayudhyata ॥ ity abruvan janās tatra saṅgrāmaśirasi sthitāḥ ॥04-53-23॥
[द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Droṇa; (the warrior and teacher); हि (hi) - indeed; for; surely; समरे (samare) - in battle; (locative singular); कः (kaḥ) - who; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; (infinitive); अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; is able; फल्गुनात् (phalgunāt) - than Phalguna; (from Arjuna, ablative singular); रौद्रः (raudraḥ) - terrible; fierce; क्षत्रियधर्मः (kṣatriyadharmaḥ) - Kṣatriya duty; (warrior's code); अयम् (ayam) - this; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the teacher; (instrumental singular); यत् (yad) - that (which); अयुध्यत् (ayudhyata) - he fought; (imperfect, 3rd person singular); इति (iti) - thus; so; (end of quotation); अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke; they said; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; तत्र (tatra) - there; सङ्ग्रामशिरसि (saṅgrāmaśirasi) - at the head of the battle; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; present;]
(Droṇa indeed in battle who other to fight is worthy than Phalguna? Terrible Kṣatriya duty this by the teacher that (he) fought. Thus they said people there at the head of the battle standing. (04-53-23))
"Indeed, who other than Phalguna is worthy to fight Droṇa in battle? This fierce Kṣatriya duty is that the teacher fought." Thus spoke the people standing there at the forefront of the battle. (04-53-23)
वीरौ तावपि संरब्धौ संनिकृष्टौ महारथौ। छादयेतां शरव्रातैरन्योन्यमपराजितौ ॥०४-५३-२४॥
vīrau tāv api saṁrabdhau saṁnikṛṣṭau mahārathau। chādayetāṁ śaravrātair anyonyam aparājitau॥04-53-24॥
[वीरौ (vīrau) - two heroes; तौ (tau) - those two; अपि (api) - also; संरब्धौ (saṁrabdhau) - enraged; संनिकृष्टौ (saṁnikṛṣṭau) - come near (to each other); महारथौ (mahārathau) - great chariot-warriors; छादयेताम् (chādayetām) - they covered; शरव्रातैः (śaravrātaiḥ) - with showers of arrows; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - one another; अपराजितौ (aparājitau) - invincible;]
(Two heroes, those two also enraged, come near, great chariot-warriors, covered with showers of arrows one another, invincible.)
Those two invincible heroes, great chariot-warriors, enraged and having come close, covered each other with showers of arrows. (04-53-24)
विस्फार्य सुमहच्चापं हेमपृष्ठं दुरासदम्। संरब्धोऽथ भरद्वाजः फल्गुनं प्रत्ययुध्यत ॥०४-५३-२५॥
visphārya sumahaccāpaṃ hemapṛṣṭhaṃ durāsadam | saṃrabdho'tha bharadvājaḥ phalgunaṃ pratyayudhyata ॥04-53-25॥
[विस्फार्य (visphārya) - having drawn; सुमहच्चापं (sumahaccāpam) - very great bow; हेमपृष्ठं (hemapṛṣṭham) - with a golden-backed (bow); दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - difficult to approach; संरब्धः (saṃrabdhaḥ) - fierce; अथ (atha) - then; भरद्वाजः (bharadvājaḥ) - Bharadvāja; फल्गुनं (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); प्रत्ययुध्यत (pratyayudhyata) - fought against;]
(Having drawn a very great bow, with a golden back, difficult to approach, then fierce Bharadvāja fought against Phalguna.)
Then, fiercely, Bharadvāja, having drawn his great golden-backed, formidable bow, fought against Phalguna (Arjuna). (04-53-25)
स सायकमयैर्जालैरर्जुनस्य रथं प्रति। भानुमद्भिः शिलाधौतैर्भानोः प्रच्छादयत्प्रभाम् ॥०४-५३-२६॥
sa sāyakamayair jālair arjunasya rathaṃ prati। bhānumadbhiḥ śilādhautair bhānoḥ pracchādayat prabhām ॥04-53-26॥
[स (sa) (sa) - he; सायकमयैः (sāyakamayaiḥ) (sāyakamayaiḥ) - with arrow-made; जालैः (jālaiḥ) (jālaiḥ) - with nets; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; रथं (rathaṃ) (rathaṃ) - chariot; प्रति (prati) (prati) - towards; भानुमद्भिः (bhānumadbhiḥ) (bhānumadbhiḥ) - radiant; शिलाधौतैः (śilādhautaiḥ) (śilādhautaiḥ) - stone-polished; भानोः (bhānoḥ) (bhānoḥ) - of the Sun; प्रच्छादयत् (pracchādayat) (pracchādayat) - he covered; प्रभाम् (prabhām) (prabhām) - light;]
(He with arrow-made nets towards the chariot of Arjuna, with radiant stone-polished (arrows), covered the light of the Sun.)
He covered the radiance of the Sun with radiant, stone-polished nets of arrows directed toward Arjuna's chariot. (04-53-26)
पार्थं च स महाबाहुर्महावेगैर्महारथः। विव्याध निशितैर्बाणैर्मेघो वृष्ट्येव पर्वतम् ॥०४-५३-२७॥
pārthaṃ ca sa mahābāhurmahāvegairmahārathaḥ। vivyādha niśitairbāṇairmegho vṛṣṭyeva parvatam ॥04-53-27॥
[पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; महावेगैः (mahāvegaiḥ) - with great speed; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot warrior; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; मेघः (meghaḥ) - cloud; वृष्ट्या (vṛṣṭyā) - with rain; इव (iva) - like; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - a mountain;]
(And Pārtha, him the mighty-armed, great chariot-warrior, with great speed, pierced with sharp arrows, as a cloud (pierces) a mountain with rain.)
And that great chariot-warrior, mighty-armed, attacked Pārtha with great speed, piercing him with sharp arrows, like a cloud rains upon a mountain. (04-53-27)
तथैव दिव्यं गाण्डीवं धनुरादाय पाण्डवः। शत्रुघ्नं वेगवद्धृष्टो भारसाधनमुत्तमम् ॥ विससर्ज शरांश्चित्रान्सुवर्णविकृतान्बहून् ॥०४-५३-२८॥
tathaiva divyaṃ gāṇḍīvaṃ dhanur-ādāya pāṇḍavaḥ| śatrughnaṃ vegavad dhṛṣṭo bhārasādhanam uttamam|| visasarja śarāṃś citrān suvarṇavikṛtān bahūn||04-53-28||
[तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; in the same manner; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; गाण्डीवं (gāṇḍīvaṃ) - Gāṇḍīva (name of Arjuna's bow); धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आदाय (ādāya) - taking; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna); शत्रुघ्नं (śatrughnam) - destroyer of enemies; वेगवत् (vegavat) - full of speed; धृष्टः (dhṛṣṭaḥ) - bold; भारसाधनम् (bhārasādhanam) - excellent means of accomplishing the task; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; विससर्ज (visasarja) - he released; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; चित्रान् (citrān) - variegated; सुवर्णविकृतान् (suvarṇavikṛtān) - adorned with gold; बहून् (bahūn) - many;]
(Just so, taking the divine Gāṇḍīva bow, the son of Pāṇḍu, destroyer of enemies, full of speed, bold, supreme excellent means of accomplishing the task, released many variegated arrows adorned with gold.)
In the same manner, the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna), bold and swift, took up his divine Gāṇḍīva bow—the supreme weapon for overcoming enemies—and released many variegated arrows adorned with gold. (04-53-28)
नाशयञ्शरवर्षाणि भारद्वाजस्य वीर्यवान्। तूर्णं चापविनिर्मुक्तैस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥०४-५३-२९॥
nāśayañ śara-varṣāṇi bhāradvājasya vīryavān। tūrṇaṃ cāpa-vinir-muktais tad adbhutam ivābhavat ॥04-53-29॥
[नाशयन् (nāśayan) - destroying; शरवर्षाणि (śara-varṣāṇi) - showers of arrows; भारद्वाजस्य (bhāradvājasya) - of Bhāradvāja; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; चापविनिर्मुक्तैः (cāpa-vinir-muktaiḥ) - by those released from the bow; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Destroying showers of arrows of Bhāradvāja, the powerful one quickly (with) those released from the bow— that became as if wonderful.)
The powerful one destroyed the showers of arrows of Bhāradvāja quickly with arrows released from his bow; it seemed truly marvelous. (04-53-29)
स रथेन चरन्पार्थः प्रेक्षणीयो धनञ्जयः। युगपद्दिक्षु सर्वासु सर्वशस्त्राण्यदर्शयत् ॥०४-५३-३०॥
sa rathena caran pārthaḥ prekṣaṇīyo dhanañjayaḥ। yugapad dikṣu sarvāsu sarvaśastrāṇy adarśayat ॥04-53-30॥
[स (sa) - he; रथेन (rathena) - with the chariot; चरण् (caran) - moving; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna, son of Pṛthā); प्रेक्षणीयः (prekṣaṇīyaḥ) - splendid (to behold); धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); युगपत् (yugapad) - simultaneously; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the directions; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; सर्वशस्त्राणि (sarvaśastrāṇi) - all weapons; अदर्शयत् (adarśayat) - he displayed;]
(He, moving with the chariot, Pārtha (Arjuna), splendid (to behold), Dhanañjaya, simultaneously in all directions in all [places], all weapons he displayed.)
Arjuna, known as Pārtha and Dhanañjaya, moving on his chariot and splendid to behold, simultaneously displayed all weapons in every direction. (04-53-30)
एकच्छायमिवाकाशं बाणैश्चक्रे समन्ततः। नादृश्यत तदा द्रोणो नीहारेणेव संवृतः ॥०४-५३-३१॥
ekacchāyam ivākāśaṃ bāṇaiś cakre samantataḥ. nādṛśyata tadā droṇo nīhāreṇeva saṃvṛtaḥ ॥04-53-31॥
[एकच्छायम् (ekacchāyam) - of one shade; इव (iva) - like; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - the sky; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; चक्रे (cakre) - (he) made; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; न (na) - not; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - (he) was seen; तदा (tadā) - then; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; नीहारेण (nīhāreṇa) - by mist; इव (iva) - as if; संवृतः (saṃvṛtaḥ) - enveloped; ॥०४-५३-३१॥ (॥04-53-31॥) -;]
(He made the sky on all sides of one shade with arrows, like (a sky) covered by mist. Then Droṇa was not seen, enveloped as if by mist.)
He made the entire sky on all sides of uniform shade with arrows, so that then Droṇa was not visible, as if he were enveloped by mist. (04-53-31)
तस्याभवत्तदा रूपं संवृतस्य शरोत्तमैः। जाज्वल्यमानस्य यथा पर्वतस्येव सर्वतः ॥०४-५३-३२॥
tasyābhavat tadā rūpaṁ saṁvṛtasya śarottamaiḥ। jājvalyamānasya yathā parvatasyeva sarvataḥ॥04-53-32॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; (genitive singular of 'tat') अभवत् (abhavat) - became; (3rd person singular, past tense of 'bhū') तदा (tadā) - then; रूपं (rūpaṁ) - appearance; form; संवृतस्य (saṁvṛtasya) - being covered; of the covered (genitive singular of 'saṁvṛta'); शरोत्तमैः (śarottamaiḥ) - by the best arrows; (instrumental plural of 'śarottama') जाज्वल्यमानस्य (jājvalyamānasya) - blazing; shining (genitive singular of present participle 'jājvalyamāna'); यथा (yathā) - just as; पर्वतस्येव (parvatasyeva) - of a mountain, indeed; (parvatasya + eva); सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; from everywhere;]
(Of him became then the form, of the one covered by the best arrows, blazing, just as of a mountain indeed on all sides.)
At that moment, his appearance, covered on all sides by the finest arrows and blazing, became just like that of a mountain shining everywhere. (04-53-32)
दृष्ट्वा तु पार्थस्य रणे शरैः स्वरथमावृतम्। स विस्फार्य धनुश्चित्रं मेघस्तनितनिस्वनम् ॥०४-५३-३३॥
dṛṣṭvā tu pārthasya raṇe śaraiḥ svaratham āvṛtam। sa visphārya dhanuś citram megha-stanita-nisvanam ॥04-53-33॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha (Arjuna); रणे (raṇe) - in battle; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; स्वरथम् (sva-ratham) - his own chariot; आवृतम् (āvṛtam) - covered; स (sa) - he; विस्फार्य (visphārya) - having stretched (tightened); धनुः (dhanuḥ) - the bow; चित्रम् (citram) - marvellous; मेघस्तनितनिस्वनम् (megha-stanita-nisvanam) - with sound like thunder of clouds;]
(Having seen but of Partha in battle by arrows his own chariot covered, he having stretched the marvellous bow with a sound like the thunder of clouds.)
But seeing Partha's chariot in the battle covered by arrows, he drew his marvellous bow, which echoed like the thunder of clouds. (04-53-33)
अग्निचक्रोपमं घोरं विकर्षन्परमायुधम्। व्यशातयच्छरांस्तांस्तु द्रोणः समितिशोभनः ॥ महानभूत्ततः शब्दो वंशानामिव दह्यताम् ॥०४-५३-३४॥
agnicakropamaṃ ghoraṃ vikarṣan paramāyudham। vyaśātayac charāṃs tāṃs tu droṇaḥ samitiśobhanaḥ ॥ mahān abhūd tataḥ śabdo vaṃśānām iva dahyatām ॥04-53-34॥
[अग्निचक्रोपमम् (agnicakropamam) - like a fiery wheel; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; विकर्षन् (vikarṣan) - drawing back; परमायुधम् (paramāyudham) - the supreme weapon; व्यशातयत् (vyaśātayat) - released; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; तान् (tān) - those; तु (tu) - but; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; समिति-शोभनः (samiti-śobhanaḥ) - brilliant in battle; महान् (mahān) - great; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; वंशानामिव (vaṃśānām iva) - like that of bamboos; दह्यताम् (dahyatām) - when burning;]
(Like a fiery wheel, terrible, drawing back the supreme weapon, Droṇa, brilliant in battle, released those arrows. Then a great sound arose, like (the sound) of burning bamboos.)
Drawing back his supreme weapon, Droṇa, brilliant in battle, released those terrible arrows, like a fiery wheel. Then a great sound arose, like the bamboos when they are burning. (04-53-34)
जाम्बूनदमयैः पुङ्खैश्चित्रचापवरातिगैः। प्राच्छादयदमेयात्मा दिशः सूर्यस्य च प्रभाम् ॥०४-५३-३५॥
jāmbūnadamayaiḥ puṅkhaiz citracāpavarātigaiḥ। prācchādayad ameyātmā diśaḥ sūryasya ca prabhām ॥04-53-35॥
[जाम्बूनदमयैः (jāmbūnadamayaiḥ) - made of Jāmbūnada (gold); पुङ्खैः (puṅkhaiḥ) - with feathers; चित्रचापवरातिगैः (citracāpavarātigaiḥ) - with exceeding (swift) speed of the beautiful bow (rainbow); प्राच्छादयत् (prācchādayat) - covered; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - one whose nature is immeasurable; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the quarters; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; च (ca) - and; प्रभाम् (prabhām) - the radiance;]
(With feathers made of Jāmbūnada gold and with the speed exceeding that of the beautiful rainbow, the immeasurable-natured one covered the quarters and the radiance of the sun.)
The one of immeasurable nature, with feathers of Jāmbūnada gold and surpassing the speed of the splendid rainbow, covered all the quarters and even the brilliance of the sun. (04-53-35)
ततः कनकपुङ्खानां शराणां नतपर्वणाम्। वियच्चराणां वियति दृश्यन्ते बहुशः प्रजाः ॥०४-५३-३६॥
tataḥ kanakapuṅkhānāṁ śarāṇāṁ nataparvaṇām। viyaccarāṇāṁ viyati dṛśyante bahuśaḥ prajāḥ ॥04-53-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कनकपुङ्खानाम् (kanakapuṅkhānām) - of golden-feathered; शराणाम् (śarāṇām) - of arrows; नतपर्वणाम् (nataparvaṇām) - with bent joints; वियच्चराणाम् (viyaccarāṇām) - moving in the sky; वियति (viyati) - in the sky; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - beings;]
(Then, of golden-feathered, of arrows, with bent joints, moving in the sky, in the sky, are seen, many times, beings.)
Then, in the sky, many beings, like golden-feathered arrows with bent joints, moving aloft, are often seen. (04-53-36)
द्रोणस्य पुङ्खसक्ताश्च प्रभवन्तः शरासनात्। एको दीर्घ इवादृश्यदाकाशे संहतः शरः ॥०४-५३-३७॥
droṇasya puṅkhasaktāś ca prabhavantaḥ śarāsanāt। eko dīrgha ivādṛśyad ākāśe saṅhataḥ śaraḥ॥04-53-37॥
[द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; पुङ्खसक्ताः (puṅkhasaktāḥ) - attached at the feathers; च (ca) - and; प्रभवन्तः (prabhavantaḥ) - arising; शरासनात् (śarāsanāt) - from the bow; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; दीर्घ (dīrgha) - long; इव (iva) - like; अदृश्यत् (adṛśyat) - was seen; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; संहतः (saṅhataḥ) - joined together; शरः (śaraḥ) - arrow;]
(Of Droṇa, arrows attached at the feathers and arising from the bow, one long as if was seen in the sky, joined together, arrow.)
The arrows of Droṇa, attached at the feathers and released from his bow, appeared in the sky like a single long arrow, joined together. (04-53-37)
एवं तौ स्वर्णविकृतान्विमुञ्चन्तौ महाशरान्। आकाशं संवृतं वीरावुल्काभिरिव चक्रतुः ॥०४-५३-३८॥

युद्धं समभवत्तत्र सुसंरब्धं महात्मनोः। द्रोणपाण्डवयोर्घोरं वृत्रवासवयोरिव ॥०४-५३-४०॥
yuddhaṁ samabhavat tatra susaṁrabdhaṁ mahātmanoḥ। droṇa-pāṇḍavayoḥ ghoram vṛtra-vāsavayoḥ iva ॥04-53-40॥

अथ त्वाचार्यमुख्येन शरान्सृष्टाञ्शिलाशितान्। न्यवारयच्छितैर्बाणैरर्जुनो जयतां वरः ॥०४-५३-४३॥
atha tv ācāryamukhyena śarān sṛṣṭān śilāśitān। nyavārayac chitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ arjunaḥ jayatāṃ varaḥ॥04-53-43॥

(Then, by you, arrows discharged, tipped with stone, were repelled by keen arrows—Arjuna, best of the victorious.)

(Desiring to slay the tiger among men, Arjuna of sharp brilliance, the chief among teachers, Droṇa, the foremost of weapon-bearers, in battle, with Arjuna, together, engaged with arrows with well-bent shafts.)
In battle, Droṇa, the foremost among weapon-bearers and chief of teachers, sought to slay Arjuna, the tiger among men who shone with sharp brilliance, and engaged with him together using arrows with well-bent shafts. (04-53-45)
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि मुञ्चन्तं भारद्वाजं महारणे। अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य फल्गुनः समयोधयत् ॥०४-५३-४६॥
divyānyastrāṇi muñcantaṃ bhāradvājaṃ mahāraṇe। astrair-astrāṇi saṃvārya phalgunaḥ samayodhayat ॥04-53-46॥

तयोरासीत्सम्प्रहारः क्रुद्धयोर्नरसिंहयोः। अमर्षिणोस्तदान्योन्यं देवदानवयोरिव ॥०४-५३-४७॥
tayor āsīt samprabhāraḥ kruddhayoḥ narasiṃhayoḥ। amarṣiṇos tadānyonyaṃ devadānavayor iva॥04-53-47॥

ऐन्द्रं वायव्यमाग्नेयमस्त्रमस्त्रेण पाण्डवः। द्रोणेन मुक्तं मुक्तं तु ग्रसते स्म पुनः पुनः ॥०४-५३-४८॥
aindraṃ vāyavyam āgneyaṃ astram astreṇa pāṇḍavaḥ। droṇena muktaṃ muktaṃ tu grasate sma punaḥ punaḥ॥04-53-48॥

(The son of Pāṇḍu by a weapon (countered) the Indra, Vāyu, and Agni weapons; whatever was released by Droṇa, released again and again, he indeed consumed but again and again.)

एवं शूरौ महेष्वासौ विसृजन्तौ शिताञ्शरान्। एकच्छायं चक्रतुस्तावाकाशं शरवृष्टिभिः ॥०४-५३-४९॥

(Thus the two valorous great archers, releasing sharp arrows, those two made the sky of one shade with showers of arrows.)

ततोऽर्जुनेन मुक्तानां पततां च शरीरिषु। पर्वतेष्विव वज्राणां शराणां श्रूयते स्वनः ॥०४-५३-५०॥
tato'ruṇena muktānāṃ patatāṃ ca śarīriṣu। parvateṣviva vajrāṇāṃ śarāṇāṃ śrūyate svanaḥ॥04-53-50॥

(Then, by Arjuna, of the released arrows, falling into the bodies, as if on mountains, of thunderbolts, of the arrows, the sound is heard.)
Then, from the arrows released by Arjuna striking the bodies, a sound was heard like thunderbolts falling on mountains. (04-53-50)
ततो नागा रथाश्चैव सादिनश्च विशां पते। शोणिताक्ता व्यदृश्यन्त पुष्पिता इव किंशुकाः ॥०४-५३-५१॥
tato nāgā rathāścaiva sādināśca viśāṃ pate। śoṇitāktā vyadṛśyanta puṣpitā iva kiṃśukāḥ ॥04-53-51॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नागाः (nāgāḥ) - elephants; रथाः (rathāḥ) - chariots; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सादिनः (sādināḥ) - horsemen; च (ca) - and; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; शोणिताक्ताः (śoṇitāktāḥ) - smeared with blood; व्यदृश्यन्त (vyadṛśyanta) - were seen; पुष्पिताः (puṣpitāḥ) - blooming; इव (iva) - like; किंशुकाः (kiṃśukāḥ) - butea trees;]
(Then elephants, chariots, and also horsemen, O lord of men, smeared with blood, were seen like blooming kiṃśuka trees.)
Then, O lord of men, elephants, chariots, and horsemen, all smeared with blood, appeared just like blossoming kiṃśuka trees. (04-53-51)
बाहुभिश्च सकेयूरैर्विचित्रैश्च महारथैः। सुवर्णचित्रैः कवचैर्ध्वजैश्च विनिपातितैः ॥०४-५३-५२॥
bāhubhiś ca sakeyūrair vicitraiś ca mahārathaiḥ। suvarṇacitraiḥ kavacair dhvajaiś ca vinipātitaiḥ ॥04-53-52॥

It was strewn with arms adorned with armlets, with splendid and varied great chariot-warriors, with armors adorned with gold, and with banners, all fallen (on the ground). (04-53-52)
योधैश्च निहतैस्तत्र पार्थबाणप्रपीडितैः। बलमासीत्समुद्भ्रान्तं द्रोणार्जुनसमागमे ॥०४-५३-५३॥
yodhaiś ca nihatais tatra pārtha-bāṇa-prapīḍitaiḥ. balam āsīt samudbhrāntaṃ droṇārjuna-samāgame ॥04-53-53॥

विधुन्वानौ तु तौ वीरौ धनुषी भारसाधने। आच्छादयेतामन्योन्यं तितक्षन्तौ रणेषुभिः ॥०४-५३-५४॥
vidhunvānau tu tau vīrau dhanuṣī bhārasādhane। ācchādayetām anyonyaṃ titakṣantau raṇeṣu-bhiḥ ॥04-53-54॥

अथान्तरिक्षे नादोऽभूद्द्रोणं तत्र प्रशंसताम्। दुष्करं कृतवान्द्रोणो यदर्जुनमयोधयत् ॥०४-५३-५५॥

(Then in the sky a sound arose, of those praising Droṇa there. Droṇa had performed a difficult deed, that he fought Arjuna.)
Then, in the sky, a sound arose from those praising Droṇa, for Droṇa had accomplished the difficult feat of engaging Arjuna in battle. (04-53-55)
प्रमाथिनं महावीर्यं दृढमुष्टिं दुरासदम्। जेतारं देवदैत्यानां सर्पाणां च महारथम् ॥०४-५३-५६॥
pramāthinaṃ mahā-vīryaṃ dṛḍha-muṣṭiṃ dur-āsadam। jetāraṃ deva-daityānāṃ sarpāṇāṃ ca mahā-ratham ॥04-53-56॥
[प्रमाथिनम् (pramāthinam) - destroyer; महावीर्यम् (mahāvīryam) - of great strength; दृढमुष्टिम् (dṛḍhamuṣṭim) - with firm fist; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - hard to approach; जेतारम् (jetāram) - conqueror; देवदैत्यानाम् (deva-daityānām) - of gods and daityas; सर्पाणाम् (sarpāṇām) - of serpents; च (ca) - and; महारथम् (mahāratham) - great chariot-warrior;]
(Destroyer, of great strength, with firm fist, hard to approach, conqueror of gods and daityas and serpents, and a great chariot-warrior.)

अविश्रमं च शिक्षां च लाघवं दूरपातिताम्। पार्थस्य समरे दृष्ट्वा द्रोणस्याभूच्च विस्मयः ॥०४-५३-५७॥
aviśramaṃ ca śikṣāṃ ca lāghavaṃ dūrapātitām। pārthasya samare dṛṣṭvā droṇasyābhūc ca vismayaḥ ॥04-53-57॥
[अविश्रमम् (aviśramam) - without fatigue; च (ca) - and; शिक्षाम् (śikṣām) - training; च (ca) - and; लाघवम् (lāghavam) - lightness; दूरपातिताम् (dūrapātitām) - having caused to fall at a distance; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); समरे (samare) - in battle; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; अभूत् (abhūt) - there was; च (ca) - and; विस्मयः (vismayaḥ) - astonishment;]
(Without fatigue and (his) training and (his) lightness, (arrows) caused to fall at a distance; having seen, of Pārtha in battle, of Droṇa there was also astonishment.)
When Droṇa saw in battle the tirelessness, the skill, and the lightness with which Pārtha (Arjuna) cast his arrows afar, he was astonished. (04-53-57)
अथ गाण्डीवमुद्यम्य दिव्यं धनुरमर्षणः। विचकर्ष रणे पार्थो बाहुभ्यां भरतर्षभ ॥०४-५३-५८॥
atha gāṇḍīvam-udyamya divyaṃ dhanur-amarṣaṇaḥ| vicakarṣa raṇe pārtho bāhubhyāṃ bharatarṣabha॥04-53-58॥
[अथ (atha) - then; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva (the bow); उद्यम्य (udyamya) - raising; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; अमर्षणः (amarṣaṇaḥ) - restless (with indignation); विचकर्ष (vicakarṣa) - drew (tight, the bowstring); रणे (raṇe) - in the battle; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); बाहुभ्यां (bāhubhyāṃ) - with (his) arms; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Then, Gāṇḍīva, raising the divine bow, restless (with indignation), drew (the string) in the battle, Pārtha, with (his) arms, O bull among the Bharatas.)
Then Pārtha (Arjuna), raising the divine Gāṇḍīva bow, restless with indignation, drew its string with his arms in the battle, O bull among the Bharatas. (04-53-58)
तस्य बाणमयं वर्षं शलभानामिवायतम्। न च बाणान्तरे वायुरस्य शक्नोति सर्पितुम् ॥०४-५३-५९॥
tasya bāṇamayaṃ varṣaṃ śalabhānām ivāyatam। na ca bāṇāntare vāyur asya śaknoti sarpitum ॥04-53-59॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; बाणमयं (bāṇamayaṃ) - arrow-made; वर्षं (varṣaṃ) - shower; शलभानाम् (śalabhānām) - of locusts; इव (iva) - like; आयतम् (āyatam) - extended; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; बाणान्तरे (bāṇāntare) - within (the space) between arrows; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; अस्य (asya) - of it (his); शक्नोति (śaknoti) - is able; सर्पितुम् (sarpitum) - to move;]
(Of him arrow-made shower like of locusts extended. And not within (the space) between arrows the wind of it is able to move.)
His shower of arrows was spread out like a swarm of locusts, and even the wind was not able to pass between his arrows. (04-53-59)
अनिशं संदधानस्य शरानुत्सृजतस्तदा। ददृशे नान्तरं किञ्चित्पार्थस्याददतोऽपि च ॥०४-५३-६०॥
aniśaṁ saṁdadhānasya śarān utsṛjataḥ tadā। dadṛśe na antaraṁ kiñcit pārthasya ādadato'pi ca ॥04-53-60॥
[अनिशं (aniśam) (aniśam) - without ceasing; continually; संदधानस्य (saṁdadhānasya) (saṁdadhānasya) - of (him) fitting (on the bow); शरान् (śarān) (śarān) - arrows; उत्सृजतः (utsṛjataḥ) (utsṛjataḥ) - (him) releasing; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; ददृशे (dadṛśe) (dadṛśe) - was seen; न (na) (na) - not; अन्तरं (antaraṁ) (antaraṁ) - difference; gap; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) (kiñcit) - even the least; anything; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); आददतः (ādadataḥ) (ādadataḥ) - (him) taking up (arrows); अपि (api) (api) - even; च (ca) (ca) - and;]
(Then, of him (Pārtha/Arjuna) continually fitting arrows, releasing and taking up, not even the least gap was seen.)
At that time, as Arjuna continually fitted arrows, released them, and took them up, not even the slightest gap was seen. (04-53-60)
तथा शीघ्रास्त्रयुद्धे तु वर्तमाने सुदारुणे। शीघ्राच्छीघ्रतरं पार्थः शरानन्यानुदीरयत् ॥०४-५३-६१॥
tathā śīghrāstrayuddhe tu vartamāne sudāruṇe. śīghrācchīghrataraṃ pārthaḥ śarān anyān udīrayat ॥04-53-61॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; शीघ्रास्त्रयुद्धे (śīghrāstrayuddhe) - in the swift-weapons battle; तु (tu) - but; वर्तमाने (vartamāne) - when (it is) ongoing; सुदारुणे (sudāruṇe) - very fierce; शीघ्रात् (śīghrāt) - than speed; शीघ्रतरम् (śīghrataram) - even swifter; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); शरान् (śarān) - arrows; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; उदीरयत् (udīrayat) - sent forth;]
(Thus, in the swift-weapons battle but ongoing, very fierce, swifter than (even) speed, Pārtha sent forth other arrows.)
Thus, while the very fierce and fast missile-battle was ongoing, Pārtha (Arjuna) sent forth other arrows, even swifter than before. (04-53-61)
ततः शतसहस्राणि शराणां नतपर्वणाम्। युगपत्प्रापतंस्तत्र द्रोणस्य रथमन्तिकात् ॥०४-५३-६२॥
tataḥ śatasahasrāṇi śarāṇāṃ nataparvaṇām। yugapatprāpataṃstatra droṇasya rathamantikāt॥04-53-62॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शतसहस्राणि (śata-sahasrāṇi) - hundred-thousands; शराणां (śarāṇām) - of arrows; नतपर्वणाम् (nata-parvaṇām) - with curved joints; युगपत् (yugapat) - simultaneously; प्रापतन् (prāpatan) - fell; तत्र (tatra) - there; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - near;]
(Then hundred-thousands of arrows with curved joints simultaneously fell there near Droṇa's chariot.)
Then, hundreds of thousands of arrows with curved joints fell all at once near Droṇa's chariot. (04-53-62)
अवकीर्यमाणे द्रोणे तु शरैर्गाण्डीवधन्वना। हाहाकारो महानासीत्सैन्यानां भरतर्षभ ॥०४-५३-६३॥
avakīryamāṇe droṇe tu śarairgāṇḍīvadhanvanā। hāhākāro mahān āsītsainyānāṃ bharatarṣabha ॥04-53-63॥
[अवकीर्यमाणे (avakīryamāṇe) - being covered over; द्रोणे (droṇe) - Droṇa; तु (tu) - but; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; गाण्डीवधन्वना (gāṇḍīvadhanvanā) - by the wielder of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna); हाहाकारः (hāhākāraḥ) - cries of alarm; महान् (mahān) - great; आसीत् (āsīt) - arose; सैन्यानाम् (sainyānām) - of the armies; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(But when Droṇa was being covered over with arrows by the wielder of Gāṇḍīva, O bull among the Bharatas, a great cry of alarm arose among the armies.)
O best of the Bharatas, when Droṇa was being showered with arrows by Arjuna, a great outcry arose among the armies. (04-53-63)
पाण्डवस्य तु शीघ्रास्त्रं मघवान्समपूजयत्। गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव ये च तत्र समागताः ॥०४-५३-६४॥
pāṇḍavasya tu śīghrāstraṃ maghavān samapūjayat। gandharvāpsarasaś caiva ye ca tatra samāgatāḥ ॥04-53-64॥
[पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the son of Pandu; तु (tu) - but; शीघ्रास्त्रं (śīghrāstram) - swift weapon; मघवान् (maghavān) - Indra; समपूजयत् (samapūjayat) - completely worshipped; गन्धर्वाप्सरसः (gandharvāpsarasaḥ) - the Gandharvas and Apsarases; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;]
(Of the son of Pandu, but the swift weapon Indra completely worshipped. The Gandharvas and Apsarases also and who and there assembled.)
But Indra completely honored the swift weapon of the son of Pandu; and the Gandharvas, the Apsarases, and all who were assembled there also did so. (04-53-64)
ततो वृन्देन महता रथानां रथयूथपः। आचार्यपुत्रः सहसा पाण्डवं प्रत्यवारयत् ॥०४-५३-६५॥
tato vṛndena mahatā rathānāṁ rathayūthapaḥ। ācāryaputraḥ sahasā pāṇḍavaṁ pratyavārayat॥04-53-65॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वृन्देन (vṛndena) - with the host; महतā (mahatā) - great; रथानां (rathānāṁ) - of chariots; रथयूथपः (rathayūthapaḥ) - chief of the chariot-warriors; आचार्यपुत्रः (ācāryaputraḥ) - the teacher's son; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; पाण्डवं (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna or Yudhishthira); प्रत्यवारयत् (pratyavārayat) - checked;]
(Then with the great host of chariots, the chief of the chariot-warriors, the teacher's son, suddenly checked the Pāṇḍava.)
Then, accompanied by a great host of chariots, the chief of the chariot-warriors, the teacher's son, suddenly stopped the Pāṇḍava. (04-53-65)
अश्वत्थामा तु तत्कर्म हृदयेन महात्मनः। पूजयामास पार्थस्य कोपं चास्याकरोद्भृशम् ॥०४-५३-६६॥
aśvatthāmā tu tatkarma hṛdayena mahātmanaḥ। pūjayāmāsa pārthasya kopaṃ ca asya akarot bhṛśam॥04-53-66॥
[अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāmā; तु (tu) - but; तत्-कर्म (tat-karma) - that act; हृदयेन (hṛdayena) - with heart; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled (person); पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - very much;]
(Aśvatthāmā but that act with the heart of the great-souled (person) honored; of Pārtha anger and his made very much.)
But Aśvatthāma honored that act with the heart of the great-souled one and greatly angered Pārtha. (04-53-66)
स मन्युवशमापन्नः पार्थमभ्यद्रवद्रणे। किरञ्शरसहस्राणि पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ॥०४-५३-६७॥
sa manyuvaśamāpannaḥ pārtham abhyadravad raṇe। kirañ śara-sahasrāṇi parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān ॥04-53-67॥
[स (sa) - he; मन्युवशमापन्नः (manyuvaśam-āpannaḥ) - come under control of anger; पार्थम् (pārtham) - towards Pārtha (Arjuna); अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - rushed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; किरन् (kiran) - showering; शरसहस्राणि (śara-sahasrāṇi) - thousands of arrows; पर्जन्य (parjanya) - Parjanya (cloud); इव (iva) - like; वृष्टिमान् (vṛṣṭimān) - possessed of rain;]
(He, having come under control of anger, towards Pārtha rushed in battle, showering thousands of arrows like Parjanya possessed of rain.)
He, overcome with anger, rushed at Pārtha in the battle, pouring forth thousands of arrows like the rain-filled cloud Parjanya. (04-53-67)
आवृत्य तु महाबाहुर्यतो द्रौणिस्ततो हयान्। अन्तरं प्रददौ पार्थो द्रोणस्य व्यपसर्पितुम् ॥०४-५३-६८॥
āvṛtya tu mahābāhur yato drauṇis tato hayān। antaraṃ pradadau pārtho droṇasya vyapasarpitum॥04-53-68॥
[आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having surrounded; तु (tu) - but; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; यतः (yataḥ) - from where; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman); ततः (tataḥ) - from there; हयान् (hayān) - the horses; अन्तरम् (antaram) - distance; gap; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; granted; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; व्यपसर्पितुम् (vyapasarpitum) - to retreat;]
(Having surrounded, but the mighty-armed (Arjuna), from where Drauṇi (Aśvatthāman), from there the horses, a distance gave Pārtha, of Droṇa, to retreat.)
But the mighty-armed Arjuna, having surrounded, allowed the horses a gap from where Drauṇi was so that he could retreat from Droṇa. (04-53-68)
स तु लब्ध्वान्तरं तूर्णमपायाज्जवनैर्हयैः। छिन्नवर्मध्वजः शूरो निकृत्तः परमेषुभिः ॥०४-५३-६९॥
sa tu labdhvāntaraṃ tūrṇam apāyāj javanair hayaiḥ। chinnavarmadhvajaḥ śūro nikṛttaḥ parameṣubhiḥ॥04-53-69॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; अन्तरम् (antaram) - an opening; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अपायात् (apāyāt) - departed; जवनैः (javanaiḥ) - with swift; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - horses; छिन्नवर्मध्वजः (chinna-varma-dhvajaḥ) - with armor and banner cut; शूरः (śūraḥ) - the hero; निकृत्तः (nikṛttaḥ) - cut down; परमेषुभिः (parameṣubhiḥ) - by excellent arrows;]
(He but having obtained an opening quickly departed with swift horses; with armor and banner cut, the hero was cut down by excellent arrows.)
But he, having found an opening, quickly escaped with swift horses; his armor and banner severed, the hero was struck down by excellent arrows. (04-53-69)
