तं पार्थः प्रतिजग्राह वायुवेगमिवोद्धतम्। शरजालेन महता वर्षमाणमिवाम्बुदम् ॥०४-५४-१॥
taṃ pārthaḥ pratijagrāha vāyu-vegam iva uddhatam | śara-jālena mahatā varṣamāṇam iva ambudam ॥04-54-1॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna, son of Pṛthā); प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; accepted; seized; वायुवेगम् (vāyu-vegam) - wind-force; speed of wind; इव (iva) - like; उद्धतम् (uddhatam) - arisen; agitated; raised; शरजालेन (śara-jālena) - with the net of arrows; महत् (mahatā) - great; वर्षमाणम् (varṣamāṇam) - raining; pouring; इव (iva) - as if; like; अम्बुदम् (ambudam) - cloud;]
(Him Pārtha received like wind-force arisen, with the great net of arrows (as if) pouring like a cloud.)
Pārtha (Arjuna) received him, who was rushing with the force of the wind, with his great network of arrows, just as one would meet a cloud pouring rain. (04-54-1)
तयोर्देवासुरसमः संनिपातो महानभूत्। किरतोः शरजालानि वृत्रवासवयोरिव ॥०४-५४-२॥
tayor devāsurasamaḥ saṃnipāto mahān abhūt. kiratoḥ śarajālāni vṛtravāsavayor iva ॥04-54-2॥

(Of the two, a confrontation equal to that of gods and asuras became great. The networks of arrows of the two Kirātas were like those of Vṛtra and Vāsava.)
A great clash between the two, equal to that of gods and demons, arose, and the showers of arrows from the two Kirātas resembled those exchanged by Vṛtra and Indra. (04-54-2)
न स्म सूर्यस्तदा भाति न च वाति समीरणः। शरगाढे कृते व्योम्नि छायाभूते समन्ततः ॥०४-५४-३॥
na sma sūryas tadā bhāti na ca vāti samīraṇaḥ। śaragāḍhe kṛte vyomni chāyābhūte samantataḥ॥04-54-3॥
[न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; तदा (tadā) - then; भाति (bhāti) - shines; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; वाति (vāti) - blows; समीरणः (samīraṇaḥ) - wind; शरगाढे (śaragāḍhe) - when filled with arrows; कृते (kṛte) - having been made; व्योम्नि (vyomni) - in the sky; छायाभूते (chāyābhūte) - having become shadow; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides;]
(Not indeed does the sun then shine, nor does the wind blow; when filled with arrows, the sky having become shadow on all sides.)
At that time, neither did the sun shine nor did the wind blow, as the sky had become completely shadowed on all sides by the mass of arrows. (04-54-3)
महांश्चटचटाशब्दो योधयोर्हन्यमानयोः। दह्यतामिव वेणूनामासीत्परपुरञ्जय ॥०४-५४-४॥
mahāṁś caṭacaṭāśabdo yodhayor hanyamānayoḥ। dahyatām iva veṇūnām āsīt parapurañjaya ॥04-54-4॥

O conqueror of enemy cities, there arose a great crackling sound from the two warriors being struck, as if bamboos were being burned. (04-54-4)
हयानस्यार्जुनः सर्वान्कृतवानल्पजीवितान्। स राजन्न प्रजानाति दिशं काञ्चन मोहितः ॥०४-५४-५॥
hayān asyārjunaḥ sarvān kṛtavān alpajīvitān। sa rājan na prajānāti diśaṃ kāñcana mohitaḥ॥04-54-5॥

ततो द्रौणिर्महावीर्यः पार्थस्य विचरिष्यतः। विवरं सूक्ष्ममालोक्य ज्यां चिच्छेद क्षुरेण ह ॥ तदस्यापूजयन्देवाः कर्म दृष्ट्वातिमानुषम् ॥०४-५४-६॥
tato drauṇir mahā-vīryaḥ pārthasya vicariṣyataḥ। vivaraṃ sūkṣmam ālokya jyāṃ ciccheda kṣureṇa ha ॥ tadasyāpūjayann devāḥ karma dṛṣṭvātimānuṣam ॥04-54-6॥

(Then Drauṇi, of great valor, of Pārtha moving about, having seen a minute opening, cut the bowstring with a razor (-headed arrow) indeed. That his deed, having seen as superhuman, the gods praised.)
Then Drona's son, the mighty hero, seeing a tiny opening as Arjuna moved, cut his bowstring with a razor-headed arrow. The gods, witnessing this superhuman feat, praised his action. (04-54-6)
ततो द्रौणिर्धनूंष्यष्टौ व्यपक्रम्य नरर्षभम्। पुनरभ्याहनत्पार्थं हृदये कङ्कपत्रिभिः ॥०४-५४-७॥
tato drauṇir dhanūṃṣy aṣṭau vyapakramya nararṣabham। punar abhyāhanat pārthaṃ hṛdaye kaṅkapatribhiḥ ॥04-54-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa; धनूंषि (dhanūṃṣi) - bows; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; व्यपक्रम्य (vyapakramya) - retreating; नरर्षभम् (nararṣabham) - the bull among men; पुनः (punar) - again; अभ्याहनत् (abhyāhanat) - struck; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); हृदये (hṛdaye) - in the heart; कङ्कपत्रिभिः (kaṅkapatribhiḥ) - with arrows fletched with vulture feathers;]
(Then Drauṇi, eight bows having withdrawn from the bull among men, again struck Pārtha in the heart with arrows tipped with vulture feathers.)
Then Drauṇi, after retreating eight bows' distance from the bull among men, again struck Pārtha in the heart with arrows with vulture-feathered shafts. (04-54-7)
ततः पार्थो महाबाहुः प्रहस्य स्वनवत्तदा। योजयामास नवया मौर्व्या गाण्डीवमोजसा ॥०४-५४-८॥
tataḥ pārtho mahābāhuḥ prahasya svanavat tadā। yojayāmāsa navayā maurvyā gāṇḍīvam ojasā ॥04-54-8॥

(Then Pārtha, the mighty-armed, having smiled, with a loud sound at that time, joined the Gāṇḍīva bow with a new bowstring made of mūrva, with strength.)
Then Arjuna, mighty of arms, smiling, strung his Gāṇḍīva bow with a new mūrva bowstring, forcefully and making it resound. (04-54-8)
ततोऽर्धचन्द्रमावृत्य तेन पार्थः समागमत्। वारणेनेव मत्तेन मत्तो वारणयूथपः ॥०४-५४-९॥
tato'rdhacandramāvṛtya tena pārthaḥ samāgamat। vāraṇeneva mattena matto vāraṇayūthapaḥ॥04-54-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्धचन्द्रम् (ardhacandram) - half-moon; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having circled; तेन (tena) - by him; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); समागमत् (samāgamat) - approached; वारणेन् (vāraṇena) - by an elephant; इव (iva) - like; मत्तेन (mattena) - by an intoxicated; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - intoxicated; वारणयूथपः (vāraṇayūthapaḥ) - the leader of a herd of elephants;]
(Then, having circled the half-moon (formation), by him Pārtha approached, like an intoxicated leader of a herd of elephants (approaching) by an intoxicated elephant.)
Then, having circled in a half-moon formation, Pārtha advanced against him, like an intoxicated elephant-king moving against another intoxicated elephant. (04-54-9)
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं पृथिव्यामेकवीरयोः। रणमध्ये द्वयोरेव सुमहल्लोमहर्षणम् ॥०४-५४-१०॥
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ pṛthivyām ekavīrayoḥ. raṇamadhye dvayor eva sumahallomaharṣaṇam ॥04-54-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रववृते (pravavṛte) - was undertaken; युद्धं (yuddham) - battle; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; एकवीरयोः (ekavīrayoḥ) - of two heroes; रणमध्ये (raṇamadhye) - in the midst of battle; द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of the two; एव (eva) - indeed; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising;]
(Then was undertaken battle on the earth of two heroes; in the midst of battle of the two indeed very great hair-raising (battle).)
Then, on the earth, a battle was undertaken between the two heroes. In the midst of combat, there was indeed a very great and hair-raising fight between the two. (04-54-10)
तौ वीरौ कुरवः सर्वे ददृशुर्विस्मयान्विताः। युध्यमानौ महात्मानौ यूथपाविव सङ्गतौ ॥०४-५४-११॥
tau vīrau kuravaḥ sarve dadṛśur vismayānvitāḥ। yudhyamānau mahātmānau yūthapāv iva saṅgatau ॥04-54-11॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; विस्मयान्विताः (vismayānvitāḥ) - filled with wonder; युध्यमानौ (yudhyamānau) - fighting; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - great-souled; यूथपाविव (yūthapāv iva) - like two leaders of troops; सङ्गतौ (saṅgatau) - brought together;]
(Those two heroes all the Kurus saw, filled with wonder, fighting, great-souled, like two leaders of troops brought together.)
All the Kurus, filled with wonder, saw those two great-souled heroes fighting each other, like two leaders of troops who had come together. (04-54-11)
तौ समाजघ्नतुर्वीरावन्योन्यं पुरुषर्षभौ। शरैराशीविषाकारैर्ज्वलद्भिरिव पन्नगैः ॥०४-५४-१२॥
tau samājaghnatur vīrau anyonyaṃ puruṣarṣabhau. śarair āśīviṣākāraiḥ jvaladbhir iva pannagaiḥ ॥04-54-12॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; समाजघ्नतु (samājaghnatuḥ) - struck each other; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; अन्योन्यं (anyonyaṃ) - each other; पुरुषर्षभौ (puruṣarṣabhau) - the foremost among men; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; आशीविषाकारैः (āśīviṣākāraiḥ) - having the form of venomous serpents; ज्वलद्भिः (jvaladbhiḥ) - blazing; इव (iva) - like; पन्नगैः (pannagaiḥ) - by serpents;]
(Those two heroes, the foremost among men, struck each other with arrows having the form of venomous serpents, blazing like serpents.)

अक्षय्याविषुधी दिव्यौ पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः। तेन पार्थो रणे शूरस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥०४-५४-१३॥
akṣayyāviśudhī divyau pāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ। tena pārtho raṇe śūras tasthau girir ivācalāḥ॥04-54-13॥

अश्वत्थाम्नः पुनर्बाणाः क्षिप्रमभ्यस्यतो रणे। जग्मुः परिक्षयं शीघ्रमभूत्तेनाधिकोऽर्जुनः ॥०४-५४-१४॥
aśvatthāmnaḥ punar bāṇāḥ kṣipram abhyasyato raṇe । jagmuḥ parikṣayaṃ śīghram abhūt tenādhiko'rjunaḥ ॥04-54-14॥
[अश्वत्थाम्नः (aśvatthāmnaḥ) - of Aśvatthāman; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - swiftly; अभ्यस्यतः (abhyasyataḥ) - as he (was) repeatedly shooting; रणे (raṇe) - on the battlefield; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - reached; परिक्षयम् (parikṣayam) - exhaustion; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; तेन (tena) - thereby; अधिकः (adhikaḥ) - superior; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna;]
(Of Aśvatthāman, again arrows swiftly as he repeatedly shot on the battlefield reached exhaustion quickly, became thereby superior Arjuna.)
Aśvatthāman's arrows, as he swiftly and repeatedly shot them in battle, were quickly exhausted; thereby, Arjuna became superior. (04-54-14)
ततः कर्णो महच्चापं विकृष्याभ्यधिकं रुषा। अवाक्षिपत्ततः शब्दो हाहाकारो महानभूत् ॥०४-५४-१५॥
tataḥ karṇo mahaccāpaṁ vikṛṣyābhyadhikaṁ ruṣā। avākṣipat tataḥ śabdo hāhākāro mahān abhūt ॥04-54-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; महच्चापम् (mahaccāpam) - great bow; विकृष्य (vikṛṣya) - drawing; अभ्यधिकम् (abhyadhikam) - exceedingly; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger; अवाक्षिपत् (avākṣipat) - he let loose; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; हाहाकारः (hāhākāraḥ) - cry of alarm; महान् (mahān) - great; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose;]
(Then Karṇa, drawing the great bow exceedingly in anger, let loose (the arrow). Then a sound, a great cry of alarm, arose.)
Then Karṇa, drawing his great bow with intense anger, let loose (an arrow). At that moment, a great outcry of alarm arose. (04-54-15)
तत्र चक्षुर्दधे पार्थो यत्र विस्फार्यते धनुः। ददर्श तत्र राधेयं तस्य कोपोऽत्यवीवृधत् ॥०४-५४-१६॥
tatra cakṣur dadhe pārtho yatra visphāryate dhanuḥ। dadarśa tatra rādheyaṃ tasya kopo'tyavīvṛdhat ॥04-54-16॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - eye; दधे (dadhe) - fixed; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); यत्र (yatra) - where; विस्फार्यते (visphāryate) - is stretched; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तत्र (tatra) - there; राधेयं (rādheyaṃ) - Rādheya (Karna, son of Radha); तस्य (tasya) - his; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; अत्यवीवृधत् (atyavīvṛdhat) - grew exceedingly;]
(There his eye Pārtha fixed, where the bow is stretched; saw there Rādheya; his anger grew exceedingly.)
There, Pārtha fixed his gaze where the bow was being stretched; there he saw Rādheya, and his anger increased greatly. (04-54-16)
स रोषवशमापन्नः कर्णमेव जिघांसया। अवैक्षत विवृत्ताभ्यां नेत्राभ्यां कुरुपुङ्गवः ॥०४-५४-१७॥
sa roṣavaśam-āpannaḥ karṇam-eva jighāṁsayā। avaikṣata vivṛttābhyāṁ netrābhyāṁ kurupuṅgavaḥ ॥04-54-17॥
[स (sa) - he; रोषवशमापन्नः (roṣavaśam-āpannaḥ) - fallen under the sway of anger; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karṇa; एव (eva) - only; जिघांसया (jighāṁsayā) - with the intention to kill; अवैक्षत (avaikṣata) - looked at; विवृत्ताभ्यां (vivṛttābhyām) - with wide-open; नेत्राभ्यां (netrābhyām) - eyes; कुरुपुङ्गवः (kurupuṅgavaḥ) - the chief of the Kurus;]
(He, fallen under the sway of anger, at Karṇa only, with the intention to kill, looked with wide-open eyes, the chief of the Kurus.)
The chief of the Kurus, overcome by anger, looked at Karṇa alone with the desire to kill him, his eyes wide open. (04-54-17)
तथा तु विमुखे पार्थे द्रोणपुत्रस्य सायकान्। त्वरिताः पुरुषा राजन्नुपाजह्रुः सहस्रशः ॥०४-५४-१८॥
tathā tu vimukhe pārthe droṇaputrasya sāyakān। tvaritāḥ puruṣā rājann upājahruḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥04-54-18॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; विमुखे (vimukhe) - having turned away; पार्थे (pārthe) - Pārtha (Arjuna); द्रोणपुत्रस्य (droṇaputrasya) - of the son of Droṇa; सायकान् (sāyakān) - arrows; त्वरिताः (tvaritāḥ) - quick; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उपाजह्रुः (upājahruḥ) - brought near; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by the thousands;]
(Thus but, with Pārtha having turned away, of the son of Droṇa the arrows, quick men, O king, brought near by the thousands.)
But thus, when Pārtha had turned away, O king, quick men brought thousands of arrows belonging to the son of Droṇa near. (04-54-18)
उत्सृज्य च महाबाहुर्द्रोणपुत्रं धनञ्जयः। अभिदुद्राव सहसा कर्णमेव सपत्नजित् ॥०४-५४-१९॥
utsṛjya ca mahābāhur droṇaputraṃ dhanañjayaḥ। abhidudrāva sahasā karṇam eva sapatnajit ॥04-54-19॥

(Having left and the mighty-armed (one) Droṇa’s son, Dhanañjaya suddenly rushed towards Karṇa indeed, the conqueror of foes.)
And having left Droṇa’s son, the mighty-armed Dhanañjaya, the conqueror of foes, suddenly rushed towards Karṇa. (04-54-19)
तमभिद्रुत्य कौन्तेयः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः। कामयन्द्वैरथे युद्धमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०४-५४-२०॥
tam abhidrutya kaunteyaḥ krodhasaṁrakta-locanaḥ। kāmayan dvairathe yuddham idaṁ vacanam abravīt॥04-54-20॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed towards; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः (krodhasaṁrakta-locanaḥ) - with eyes reddened by anger; कामयन् (kāmayan) - desiring; द्वैरथे (dvairathe) - on the dueling chariot; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Him having rushed towards, the son of Kunti, with eyes reddened by anger, desiring battle on the dueling chariot, this speech spoke.)
Having rushed toward him, the son of Kunti, his eyes reddened by anger and desiring battle on the dueling chariot, spoke these words. (04-54-20)
