कर्ण यत्ते सभामध्ये बहु वाचा विकत्थितम्। न मे युधि समोऽस्तीति तदिदं प्रत्युपस्थितम् ॥०४-५५-१॥
karṇa yat te sabhāmadhye bahu vācā vikatthitam। na me yudhi samo-'stīti tad idaṃ pratyupasthitam॥04-55-1॥
[कर्ण (karṇa) - Karna; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - by you; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the midst of the assembly; बहु (bahu) - much; many; वाचा (vācā) - by words; विकत्थितम् (vikatthitam) - boasted; spoken boastfully; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; for me; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; समः (samaḥ) - equal; अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; so; तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रत्युपस्थितम् (pratyupasthitam) - has come; is present; stands before (you);]
(Karna, which by you in the midst of the assembly with many words was boasted, 'not for me in battle is equal' — that this has come before (you).)
Karna, that boast of yours in the midst of the assembly, with many words, that 'there is none equal to me in battle' — now this (occasion) has arrived before you. (04-55-1)
अवोचः परुषा वाचो धर्ममुत्सृज्य केवलम्। इदं तु दुष्करं मन्ये यदिदं ते चिकीर्षितम् ॥०४-५५-२॥
avocaḥ paruṣā vāco dharmam utsṛjya kevalam। idaṃ tu duṣkaraṃ manye yad idaṃ te cikīrṣitam॥04-55-2॥
[अवोचः (avocaḥ) - you have spoken; परुषा (paruṣā) - harsh; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult; मन्ये (manye) - I think; यत् (yat) - that which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; ते (te) - by you; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - is intended to be done;]
(You have spoken harsh words, abandoning righteousness only. But this, I think, is difficult, that which this by you is intended to be done.)
You have spoken harsh words, abandoning righteousness. But I think that this act which you intend is difficult. (4-55-2)
यत्त्वया कथितं पूर्वं मामनासाद्य किञ्चन। तदद्य कुरु राधेय कुरुमध्ये मया सह ॥०४-५५-३॥
yat tvayā kathitaṃ pūrvaṃ mām anāsādya kiñcana। tad adya kuru rādheya kuru-madhye mayā saha ॥04-55-3॥
[यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कथितं (kathitam) - spoken; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - before; माम् (mām) - me; अनासाद्य (anāsādya) - not approaching; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; तत् (tat) - that; अद्य (adya) - today; कुरु (kuru) - do; राधेय (rādheya) - O son of Radha; कुरुमध्ये (kuru-madhye) - amidst the Kurus; मया (mayā) - with me; सह (saha) - together;]
(Which by you spoken before, not approaching me, anything—that today, do, O son of Radha, amidst the Kurus, together with me.)
O son of Radha, whatever you said before without coming to me, do that today in the midst of the Kurus, together with me. (04-55-3)
यत्सभायां स्म पाञ्चालीं क्लिश्यमानां दुरात्मभिः। दृष्टवानसि तस्याद्य फलमाप्नुहि केवलम् ॥०४-५५-४॥
yatsabhāyāṃ sma pāñcālīṃ kliśyamānāṃ durātmabhiḥ। dṛṣṭavān asi tasya adya phalam āpnuhi kevalam ॥04-55-4॥
[यत् (yat) - which; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; स्म (sma) - indeed; पाञ्चालीम् (pāñcālīm) - Pañcālī; क्लिश्यमानाम् (kliśyamānām) - being harassed; दुरात्मभिः (durātmabhiḥ) - by evil-minded (men); दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - you saw; असि (asi) - you are; तस्य (tasya) - of that; आद्य (adya) - today; फलम् (phalam) - fruit (result); आप्नुहि (āpnuhi) - obtain; केवलम् (kevalam) - only;]
(Which in the assembly, indeed, Pañcālī being harassed by evil-minded (men), you saw; of that today, the fruit obtain only.)
Today, you shall obtain only the result of having seen Pañcālī being harassed by evil-minded men in the assembly. (04-55-4)
धर्मपाशनिबद्धेन यन्मया मर्षितं पुरा। तस्य राधेय कोपस्य विजयं पश्य मे मृधे ॥०४-५५-५॥
dharmapāśanibaddhena yanmayā marṣitaṃ purā। tasya rādhēya kōpasya vijayaṃ paśya mē mṛdhē॥04-55-5॥
[धर्म-पाश-निबद्धेन (dharma-pāśa-nibaddhena) - by (the one) bound in the noose of dharma; यत् (yat) - which; मया (mayā) - by me; मर्षितं (marṣitaṃ) - endured; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तस्य (tasya) - of that; राधेय (rādheya) - Radheya (Karna); कोपस्य (kopasya) - of anger; विजयं (vijayaṃ) - victory; पश्य (paśya) - see; मे (me) - my; मृधे (mṛdhe) - in battle;]
(By (the one) bound by the noose of dharma, which by me was endured formerly; the victory of that Radheya's anger, see, my, in battle.)
See, in battle, the victory of the anger of that Radheya, which I, bound by the bonds of dharma, formerly endured. (04-55-5)
एहि कर्ण मया सार्धं प्रतिपद्यस्व सङ्गरम्। प्रेक्षकाः कुरवः सर्वे भवन्तु सहसैनिकाः ॥०४-५५-६॥
ehi karṇa mayā sākṛdhaṃ pratipadyasva saṅgaram। prekṣakāḥ kuravaḥ sarve bhavantu sahasainikāḥ ॥04-55-6॥
[एहि (ehi) - come; कर्ण (karṇa) - Karṇa; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धं (sārdham) - together; प्रतिपद्यस्व (pratipadyasva) - undertake; सङ्गरम् (saṅgaram) - battle; प्रेक्षकाः (prekṣakāḥ) - observers; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - let them be; सहसैनिकाः (sahasainikāḥ) - with their soldiers;]
(Come, Karṇa, together with me, undertake battle. Let all the Kurus, observers, be with their soldiers.)
Come, Karṇa, together with me, take up battle. Let all the Kurus be observers along with their soldiers. (04-55-6)

bravīṣi vācā yat pārtha karmaṇā tat samācara। atiśete hi vai vācaṃ karma iti prathitaṃ bhuvi ॥04-55-7॥
[ब्रवीषि (bravīṣi) - you speak; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; यत् (yat) - which; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; तत् (tat) - that; समाचर (samācara) - do; अतिशेते (atiśete) - surpasses; हि (hi) - indeed; वै (vai) - truly; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; कर्म (karma) - action; इति (iti) - thus; प्रथितम् (prathitam) - celebrated; भुवि (bhuvi) - in the world;]
(You speak by speech which, O Pārtha, by action that do. Surpasses indeed truly speech action thus celebrated in the world.)
O Pārtha, you speak by words, but do that by action. Indeed, action is truly said to surpass speech in this world. (04-55-7)
यत्त्वया मर्षितं पूर्वं तदशक्तेन मर्षितम्। इति गृह्णामि तत्पार्थ तव दृष्ट्वापराक्रमम् ॥०४-५५-८॥
yat tvayā marṣitaṁ pūrvaṁ tad aśaktena marṣitam. iti gṛhṇāmi tat pārtha tava dṛṣṭvā aparākramam ॥04-55-8॥
[यत् (yat) - which; that which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मर्षितं (marṣitam) - endured; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - previously; before; तत् (tat) - that; अशक्तेन (aśaktena) - by one without power; by the powerless; मर्षितम् (marṣitam) - endured; इति (iti) - thus; in this way; गृह्णामि (gṛhṇāmi) - I consider; I take; तत् (tat) - that; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; son of Prithā; तव (tava) - your; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अपराक्रमम् (aparākramam) - lack of valor; absence of enterprise;]
(That which was endured by you before, that was endured by the powerless; thus I consider that, O Pārtha, having seen your absence of valor.)
What you previously endured, I consider that to have been the endurance of the powerless, O Pārtha, upon seeing your lack of valor. (04-55-8)
धर्मपाशनिबद्धेन यदि ते मर्षितं पुरा। तथैव बद्धमात्मानमबद्धमिव मन्यसे ॥०४-५५-९॥
dharmapāśanibaddhena yadi te marṣitaṃ purā. tathaiva baddhamātmānam abaddham iva manyase ॥04-55-9॥
[धर्मपाश-निबद्धेन (dharmapāśa-nibaddhena) - by the bond of righteousness; tied;— यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - by you; मर्षितं (marṣitam) - endured; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तथा एव (tathā eva) - in the same way; बद्धम् (baddham) - bound; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; अबद्धम् इव (abaddham iva) - as if unbound; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider;]
(By the bond of righteousness, if by you, formerly, it was endured— in the same way, being bound, yourself, as if unbound, you consider.)
If you once endured being bound by the ropes of righteousness, in the same way, though bound, you now consider yourself as if unbound. (04-55-9)
यदि तावद्वने वासो यथोक्तश्चरितस्त्वया। तत्त्वं धर्मार्थवित्क्लिष्टः समयं भेत्तुमिच्छसि ॥०४-५५-१०॥
yadi tāvad vane vāso yathoktaś caritas tvayā। tattvaṃ dharmārthavit kliṣṭaḥ samayaṃ bhettum icchasi ॥04-55-10॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; तावद् (tāvad) - so long as; then; वने (vane) - in the forest; वासः (vāsaḥ) - dwelling; यथोक्तः (yathoktaḥ) - as stated; as agreed; चरितः (caritaḥ) - conducted; practiced; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - truth; essence; धर्मार्थवित् (dharmārthavit) - knower of dharma and artha; one skilled in law and wealth; क्लिष्टः (kliṣṭaḥ) - troubled; afflicted; समयम् (samayam) - agreement; promise; भेत्तुम् (bhettum) - to break; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; you desire;]
(If so long as in the forest dwelling as stated conducted by you, truth, troubled knower of dharma and artha, the promise to break you wish.)
If, though you have conducted yourself in the forest dwelling as earlier agreed, you, possessing the true knowledge of dharma and artha and being troubled, wish to break the promise, (04-55-10)
यदि शक्रः स्वयं पार्थ युध्यते तव कारणात्। तथापि न व्यथा काचिन्मम स्याद्विक्रमिष्यतः ॥०४-५५-११॥
yadi śakraḥ svayaṃ pārtha yudhyate tava kāraṇāt। tathāpi na vyathā kācin mama syād vikramiṣyataḥ ॥04-55-11॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); स्वयं (svayaṃ) - himself; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha (Arjuna); युध्यते (yudhyate) - fights; तव (tava) - for your; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - because of reason; तथापि (tathāpi) - even then; न (na) - not; व्यथा (vyathā) - distress; काचित् (kācin) - any; मम (mama) - for me; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; विक्रमिष्यतः (vikramiṣyataḥ) - of one who is about to make effort (i.e., in one about to fight);]
(If Śakra himself, O Pārtha, fights for your reason, even then, not any distress would be for me, who is about to fight.)
O Pārtha, even if Śakra himself fought for your sake, still, there would be no distress at all for me as I go forth to battle. (04-55-11)
अयं कौन्तेय कामस्ते नचिरात्समुपस्थितः। योत्स्यसे त्वं मया सार्धमद्य द्रक्ष्यसि मे बलम् ॥०४-५५-१२॥
ayaṃ kaunteya kāmaste nacirātsamupasthitaḥ। yotsyase tvaṃ mayā sārdhamadya drakṣyasi me balam ॥04-55-12॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; कामः (kāmaḥ) - wish; ते (te) - your; नचिरात् (nacirāt) - without delay; समुपस्थितः (samupasthitaḥ) - has arrived; योत्स्यसे (yotsyase) - you will fight; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; अद्य (adya) - today; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; मे (me) - my; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(This, O son of Kunti, your wish, without delay, has arrived. You will fight, you, with me together, today; you will see my strength.)
O son of Kunti, this wish of yours has come to fruition without delay. Today, you will fight side by side with me; you will see my strength. (04-55-12)

इदानीमेव तावत्त्वमपयातो रणान्मम। तेन जीवसि राधेय निहतस्त्वनुजस्तव ॥०४-५५-१३॥
idānīmeva tāvat tvam apayāto raṇān mama। tena jīvasi rādheya nihatas tvanujas tava॥04-55-13॥
[इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; एव (eva) - just; indeed; तावत् (tāvat) - thus far; for the present; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपयातः (apayātaḥ) - departed; withdrawn; रणात् (raṇāt) - from the battle; मम (mama) - my; तेन (tena) - by that; therefore; जीवसि (jīvasi) - you live; राधेय (rādheya) - O son of Radha; निहतः (nihataḥ) - killed; त्वनुजः (tvanujaḥ) - your younger brother; तव (tava) - your;]
(Now just thus far you have departed from the battle, my (battle). By that you live, O Rādheya; killed is your younger brother, your.)
Just now, for the present, you have withdrawn from my battle, O Rādheya; thus you remain alive, but your younger brother has been killed. (04-55-13)
भ्रातरं घातयित्वा च त्यक्त्वा रणशिरश्च कः। त्वदन्यः पुरुषः सत्सु ब्रूयादेवं व्यवस्थितः ॥०४-५५-१४॥
bhrātaraṃ ghātayitvā ca tyaktvā raṇaśiraśca kaḥ। tvadanyaḥ puruṣaḥ satsu brūyādevaṃ vyavasthitaḥ ॥04-55-14॥
[भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother (accusative singular); घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having caused to be slain; having killed; च (ca) - and; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; रणशिरः (raṇaśiraḥ) - battlefield (head, i.e., forefront of battle); च (ca) - and; कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वदन्यः (tvadanyaḥ) - other than you; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; सत्सु (satsu) - among the good (among honorable men); ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - would say; एवम् (evam) - thus; व्यवस्थितः (vyavasthitaḥ) - so situated; being in such a situation;]
(Having caused his brother to be slain and having abandoned (him) on the battlefield, who but you, a man among the good, situated thus, would say thus?)
Who else but you, among honorable men, having caused his brother to be slain and abandoned him on the battlefield, would speak thus, being so situated? (04-55-14)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

iti karṇaṃ bruvanneva bhībhtsuraparājitaḥ। abhyayād visṛjan bāṇān kāyāvaraṇabhedinaḥ ॥04-55-15॥
[इति (iti) - thus; कर्णं (karṇam) - to Karṇa; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; एव (eva) - just; बीभत्सुः (bhībhatsuḥ) - Bhībhatsu (Arjuna); अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - undefeated; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - advanced; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - releasing; बाणान् (bāṇān) - arrows; कायावरणभेदिनः (kāyāvaraṇabhedinaḥ) - piercing bodily armor;]
(Thus to Karṇa speaking just, Bhībhatsu undefeated advanced, releasing arrows piercing bodily armor.)
Thus, even while speaking to Karṇa, the undefeated Bhībhatsu (Arjuna) advanced, releasing arrows that pierced bodily armor. (04-55-15)
प्रतिजग्राह तान्कर्णः शरानग्निशिखोपमान्। शरवर्षेण महता वर्षमाण इवाम्बुदः ॥०४-५५-१६॥
pratijagrāha tān karṇaḥ śarān agniśikhopamān। śaravarṣeṇa mahatā varṣamāṇa iva ambudaḥ ॥04-55-16॥
[प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - he received; he accepted; तान् (tān) - them; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; अग्निशिखोपमान् (agniśikhopamān) - like fire-flames; शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣeṇa) - with a shower of arrows; महता (mahatā) - great; वर्षमाण (varṣamāṇa) - pouring down; इव (iva) - as if; अम्बुदः (ambudaḥ) - cloud;]
(Karṇa received those arrow-like fire-flames, with a great shower of arrows, as if a cloud pouring down.)
Karṇa received those arrows, which were like flames of fire, with a great shower of arrows, just as a rain cloud pours down. (04-55-16)
उत्पेतुः शरजालानि घोररूपाणि सर्वशः। अविध्यदश्वान्बाह्वोश्च हस्तावापं पृथक्पृथक् ॥०४-५५-१७॥
utpetuḥ śarajālāni ghorarūpāṇi sarvaśaḥ। avidhyadaśvān bāhvoś ca hastāv āpaṃ pṛthak pṛthak ॥04-55-17॥
[उत्पेतुः (utpetuḥ) - arose; (they) sprang up; शरजालानि (śarajālāni) - clusters of arrows; घोररूपाणि (ghorarūpāṇi) - terrible forms; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - on all sides; अविध्यत् (avidhyat) - pierced; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; बाह्वोः (bāhvoḥ) - of the two arms; च (ca) - and; हस्तौ (hastau) - the two hands; आपम् (āpaṃ) - drank (or 'reached/wet', depending on context); पृथक् पृथक् (pṛthak pṛthak) - separately; ॥०४-५५-१७॥ (॥04-55-17॥) -;]
(Arose clusters of arrows of terrifying forms on all sides; pierced the horses and, of the two arms, the two hands, drank separately.)
Clusters of arrows of dreadful form sprang up on all sides; they pierced the horses and, in both arms, the hands were wounded separately. (04-55-17)
सोऽमृष्यमाणः कर्णस्य निषङ्गस्यावलम्बनम्। चिच्छेद निशिताग्रेण शरेण नतपर्वणा ॥०४-५५-१८॥
so' mṛṣyamāṇaḥ karṇasya niṣaṅgasya āvalambanam। ciccheda niśitāgreṇa śareṇa nataparvaṇā ॥04-55-18॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अमृष्यमाणः (amṛṣyamāṇaḥ) - not bearing; intolerant; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; निषङ्गस्य (niṣaṅgasya) - of the quiver; आवलम्बनम् (āvalambanam) - support; suspension; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - he cut; निशिताग्रेण (niśitāgreṇa) - with sharp-pointed (weapon); शरेण (śareṇa) - with an arrow; नतपर्वणा (nataparvaṇā) - having bent joints;]
(He, not bearing, of Karṇa the quiver's suspension, cut with the sharp-pointed arrow having bent joints.)
He, unable to bear it, cut the suspension of Karṇa's quiver with a sharp-pointed, bent-jointed arrow. (04-55-18)
उपासङ्गादुपादाय कर्णो बाणानथापरान्। विव्याध पाण्डवं हस्ते तस्य मुष्टिरशीर्यत ॥०४-५५-१९॥
upāsaṅgād upādāya karṇo bāṇān athāparān। vivyādha pāṇḍavaṃ haste tasya muṣṭir aśīryata ॥04-55-19॥
[उपासङ्गात् (upāsaṅgāt) - from Upāsaṅga (a type of arrow or name of a weapon); उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; बाणान् (bāṇān) - arrows; अथ (atha) - then; अपरान् (aparān) - others; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava (the son of Pāṇḍu); हस्ते (haste) - in the hand; तस्य (tasya) - his; मुष्टिः (muṣṭiḥ) - fist; अशीर्यत (aśīryata) - was shattered;]
(From Upāsaṅga having taken Karṇa arrows then others pierced (the) Pāṇḍava in the hand his fist was shattered.)
Karṇa, having taken other arrows from the Upāsaṅga, then pierced the Pāṇḍava in his hand, and his fist was shattered. (04-55-19)
ततः पार्थो महाबाहुः कर्णस्य धनुरच्छिनत्। स शक्तिं प्राहिणोत्तस्मै तां पार्थो व्यधमच्छरैः ॥०४-५५-२०॥
tataḥ pārtho mahābāhuḥ karṇasya dhanuracchinat। sa śaktiṃ prāhiṇottasmai tāṃ pārtho vyadhamaccharaiḥ ॥04-55-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; अच्छिनत् (acchinat) - cut off; स (sa) - he; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - spear; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - sent; तस्मै (tasmai) - at him; ताम् (tām) - that; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); व्यधमत् (vyadhamat) - shattered; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(Thereupon Pārtha, mighty-armed, cut off the bow of Karṇa. He sent a spear at him; that Pārtha shattered with arrows.)
Then Pārtha, the mighty-armed, cut off Karṇa's bow. He (Karṇa) hurled a spear at him, which Pārtha shattered with his arrows. (04-55-20)
ततोऽभिपेतुर्बहवो राधेयस्य पदानुगाः। तांश्च गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तैः प्राहिणोद्यमसादनम् ॥०४-५५-२१॥
tato'bhipetur bahavo rādhe yasya padānugāḥ. tāṁś ca gāṇḍīva-nirmuktaiḥ prāhiṇod yama-sādanam ॥04-55-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिपेतुः (abhipetuḥ) - approached; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; राधेयस्य (rādhe yasya) - of Rādheya (Karna); पदानुगाः (padānugāḥ) - followers; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तैः (gāṇḍīva-nirmuktaiḥ) - by those (arrows) released from Gāṇḍīva; प्राहिणोत् (prāhiṇot) - he dispatched; यमसादनम् (yama-sādanam) - to the abode of Yama (death);]
(Then many followers of Rādheya approached. Them also, with (arrows) released from Gāṇḍīva, he dispatched to the abode of Yama.)
Then, many followers of Rādheya approached, and Arjuna dispatched them with arrows shot from the Gāṇḍīva to the abode of Yama (death). (04-55-21)
ततोऽस्याश्वाञ्शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्बीभत्सुर्भारसाधनैः। आकर्णमुक्तैरभ्यघ्नंस्ते हताः प्रापतन्भुवि ॥०४-५५-२२॥
tato'syāśvāñśarais tīkṣṇair bībhatsur bhārasādhanaiḥ. ākarṇamuktair abhyaghnaṃs te hatāḥ prāpatan bhuvi ॥04-55-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; तीक्ष्णैः (tīkṣṇaiḥ) - sharp; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); भारसाधनैः (bhārasādhanaiḥ) - weighty (powerful); आकर्णमुक्तैः (ākarṇamuktaiḥ) - released (drawn back) to the ear; अभ्यघ्नन् (abhyaghan) - he struck; ते (te) - they; हताः (hatāḥ) - struck down; प्रापतन् (prāpatan) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Then Bībhatsu, with sharp and weighty arrows released to the ear, struck his horses; they, having been struck down, fell on the ground.)
Then Bībhatsu (Arjuna), using sharp and powerful arrows drawn to the ear, struck his (enemy's) horses; those struck fell to the ground. (04-55-22)
अथापरेण बाणेन ज्वलितेन महाभुजः। विव्याध कर्णं कौन्तेयस्तीक्ष्णेनोरसि वीर्यवान् ॥०४-५५-२३॥
athāpareṇa bāṇena jvalitena mahābhujaḥ। vivyādha karṇaṃ kaunteyas tīkṣṇenorasi vīryavān ॥04-55-23॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपरेण (apareṇa) - with another; बाणेन (bāṇena) - with an arrow; ज्वलितेन (jvalitena) - inflamed; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - the mighty-armed one; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; तीक्ष्णेन (tīkṣṇena) - with sharp; उरसि (urasi) - in the chest; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful one;]
(Then with another arrow, inflamed, the mighty-armed one pierced Karna, the son of Kunti, with a sharp (arrow) in the chest, the powerful one.)
Then the mighty-armed Kunti's son, the powerful one, pierced Karna in the chest with another fiery sharp arrow. (04-55-23)
तस्य भित्त्वा तनुत्राणं कायमभ्यपतच्छरः। ततः स तमसाविष्टो न स्म किञ्चित्प्रजज्ञिवान् ॥०४-५५-२४॥
tasya bhittvā tanutrāṇaṃ kāyam abhyapatac charaḥ। tataḥ sa tamasāviṣṭo na sma kiñcit prajajñivān॥04-55-24॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; of him; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; after piercing; तनुत्राणम् (tanutrāṇam) - thin armor; slender shield; कायम् (kāyam) - body; अभ्यपतत् (abhyapatat) - fell upon; struck; शरः (śaraḥ) - arrow; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; आविष्टः (āviṣṭaḥ) - overcome; possessed; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; (emphatic particle); किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; प्रजज्ञिवान् (prajajñivān) - was conscious; perceived; ॥०४-५५-२४॥ (॥04-55-24॥) - ;]
(His, having pierced the thin armor, upon the body the arrow fell. Then he, overcome by darkness, was not at all conscious of anything.)
The arrow pierced through his thin armor and struck his body; then, overcome by darkness, he became completely unconscious. (04-55-24)
स गाढवेदनो हित्वा रणं प्रायादुदङ्मुखः। ततोऽर्जुन उपाक्रोशदुत्तरश्च महारथः ॥०४-५५-२५॥
sa gāḍhavedano hitvā raṇaṃ prāyād udaṅmukhaḥ. tato 'rjuna upākrośad uttaraś ca mahārathaḥ॥04-55-25॥

(He, intensely pained, abandoning the battle, departed northward. Then Arjuna called out near, and Uttara, the great chariot-warrior.)
He, overwhelmed with pain, left the battlefield and departed facing north. Then Arjuna called out, and Uttara, the great chariot-warrior, responded. (04-55-25)
