ततो वैकर्तनं जित्वा पार्थो वैराटिमब्रवीत्। एतन्मां प्रापयानीकं यत्र तालो हिरण्मयः ॥०४-५६-१॥
tato vaikartanaṃ jitvā pārtho vairāṭim abravīt। etan māṃ prāpayānīkaṃ yatra tālo hiraṇmayaḥ॥04-56-1॥

अत्र शान्तनवो भीष्मो रथेऽस्माकं पितामहः। काङ्क्षमाणो मया युद्धं तिष्ठत्यमरदर्शनः ॥ आदास्याम्यहमेतस्य धनुर्ज्यामपि चाहवे ॥०४-५६-२॥
atra śāntanavo bhīṣmo rathe'smākaṃ pitāmahaḥ। kāṅkṣamāṇo mayā yuddhaṃ tiṣṭhaty amaradarśanaḥ॥ ādāsyāmy aham etasya dhanurjyām api cāhave॥ 04-56-2॥

(Here, Bhīṣma, son of Śantanu, our grandfather, desiring battle with me, stands on the chariot, of god-like appearance. I shall take even the bow-string of him indeed in battle.)
Here, Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu and our grandfather, stands on his chariot, longing for combat with me and looking like a god. In battle, I shall seize even his bow-string. (04-56-2)
अस्यन्तं दिव्यमस्त्रं मां चित्रमद्य निशामय। शतह्रदामिवायान्तीं स्तनयित्नोरिवाम्बरे ॥०४-५६-३॥
asyantaṃ divyam astraṃ māṃ citram adya niśāmaya। śatahradām ivāyāntīṃ stanayitnor ivāmbare ॥04-56-3॥

सुवर्णपृष्ठं गाण्डीवं द्रक्ष्यन्ति कुरवो मम। दक्षिणेनाथ वामेन कतरेण स्विदस्यति ॥ इति मां सङ्गताः सर्वे तर्कयिष्यन्ति शत्रवः ॥०४-५६-४॥
suvarṇapṛṣṭhaṃ gāṇḍīvaṃ drakṣyanti kuravo mama. dakṣiṇenātha vāmena katareṇa svidasati. iti māṃ saṅgatāḥ sarve tarkayiṣyanti śatravaḥ ॥04-56-4॥

(The gold-backed Gāṇḍīva, the Kurus will see of mine. With the right or with the left—by which indeed (hand) does (he) sweat?—thus me assembled all will speculate the enemies.)
The Kurus will see my gold-backed Gāṇḍīva bow and wonder, 'With his right hand or his left does he sweat while holding it?'—thus all the assembled enemies will speculate about me. (04-56-4)
शोणितोदां रथावर्तां नागनक्रां दुरत्ययाम्। नदीं प्रस्यन्दयिष्यामि परलोकप्रवाहिनीम् ॥०४-५६-५॥
śoṇitodāṃ rathāvartāṃ nāganakrāṃ duratyayām। nadīṃ prasyandayīṣyāmi paralokapravāhinīm॥04-56-5॥

(With blood as water, with chariots as whirlpools, with elephants and crocodiles, difficult to cross, a river I will cause to flow, flowing to the other world.)
I will cause a river to flow, with blood for its water, chariots as its whirlpools, and elephants and crocodiles—difficult to cross—its stream running to the next world. (04-56-5)
पाणिपादशिरःपृष्ठबाहुशाखानिरन्तरम्। वनं कुरूणां छेत्स्यामि भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥०४-५६-६॥
pāṇipādaśiraḥpṛṣṭhabāhuśākhānirantaram. vanaṃ kurūṇāṃ chetsyāmi bhallaiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ॥04-56-6॥

(Hand, foot, head, back, arm, branch (limb), without interruption; the forest of the Kurus, I will cut with arrows with curved joints;)
I will incessantly cut down the forest of limbs—the hands, feet, heads, backs, and arms—of the Kurus with my barbed, curved arrows. (04-56-6)
जयतः कौरवीं सेनामेकस्य मम धन्विनः। शतं मार्गा भविष्यन्ति पावकस्येव कानने ॥ मया चक्रमिवाविद्धं सैन्यं द्रक्ष्यसि केवलम् ॥०४-५६-७॥
jayataḥ kauravīṃ senām ekasya mama dhanvinaḥ। śataṃ mārgā bhaviṣyanti pāvakasyeva kānane ॥ mayā cakram ivāviddhaṃ sainyaṃ drakṣyasi kevalam ॥04-56-7॥
[जयतः (jayataḥ) - conquering; (he) conquers; कौरवीं (kauravīṃ) - of the Kauravas; सेनाम् (senām) - army; एकस्य (ekasya) - of one; मम (mama) - my; धन्विनः (dhanvinaḥ) - of the archer; शतं (śatam) - a hundred; मार्गा (mārgā) - paths; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; पावकस्येव (pāvakasyeva) - like fire's; कानने (kānane) - in the forest; मया (mayā) - by me; चक्रम् (cakram) - wheel; इव (iva) - like; आविद्धम् (āviddham) - penetrated; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; केवलम् (kevalam) - only;]
(Conquering the Kaurava army by one of my archers, a hundred paths will become like fire's in the forest; by me, you will see the army only penetrated like a wheel.)
With one of my archers conquering the Kaurava army, a hundred paths will be made as if by fire in a forest; you will see the army pierced through by me, as if (struck) by a wheel—only that.
असम्भ्रान्तो रथे तिष्ठ समेषु विषमेषु च। दिवमावृत्य तिष्ठन्तं गिरिं भेत्स्यामि धारिभिः ॥०४-५६-८॥
asambhrānto rathe tiṣṭha sameṣu viṣameṣu ca. divam āvṛtya tiṣṭhantam giriṃ bhetsyāmi dhāribhiḥ ॥04-56-8॥
[असम्भ्रान्तः (asambhrāntaḥ) - not agitated; रथे (rathe) - on the chariot; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; समेषु (sameṣu) - in the level (places); विषमेषु (viṣameṣu) - in the uneven (places); च (ca) - and; दिवम् (divam) - the sky; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having covered; तिष्ठन्तम् (tiṣṭhantam) - standing; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; भेत्स्यामि (bhetsyāmi) - I will break; धारिभिः (dhāribhiḥ) - with thunderbolts;]
(Not agitated, stand on the chariot in the level and uneven (places); covering the sky, standing (there), the mountain I will break with thunderbolts.)
Remain unshaken on the chariot whether on level ground or uneven; I will cover the sky and shatter the mountain with thunderbolts. (04-56-8)
अहमिन्द्रस्य वचनात्सङ्ग्रामेऽभ्यहनं पुरा। पौलोमान्कालखञ्जांश्च सहस्राणि शतानि च ॥०४-५६-९॥
aham indrasya vacanāt saṅgrāme 'bhyahanaṃ purā. paulomān kālakhañjān ca sahasrāṇi śatāni ca ॥04-56-9॥

(I, at Indra's command, in battle, I struck down formerly the Paulomas and Kālakhañjas, thousands and hundreds and.)
Formerly, at the command of Indra, I struck down thousands and hundreds of Paulomas and Kālakhañjas in battle. (04-56-9)
अहमिन्द्राद्दृढां मुष्टिं ब्रह्मणः कृतहस्तताम्। प्रगाढं तुमुलं चित्रमतिविद्धं प्रजापतेः ॥०४-५६-१०॥
aham indrād dṛḍhāṃ muṣṭiṃ brahmaṇaḥ kṛta-hastatām। pragāḍhaṃ tumulaṃ citram atividdhaṃ prajāpateḥ ॥04-56-10॥

I obtained from Indra a firm fist, from Brahmā the skill of hand, and from Prajāpati, something profound, tumultuous, wonderful, and very well-perforated. (04-56-10)
अहं पारे समुद्रस्य हिरण्यपुरमारुजम्। जित्वा षष्टिसहस्राणि रथिनामुग्रधन्विनाम् ॥०४-५६-११॥
ahaṃ pāre samudrasya hiraṇyapuram ārujam। jitvā ṣaṣṭi-sahasrāṇi rathinām ugradhanvinām॥04-56-11॥

ध्वजवृक्षं पत्तितृणं रथसिंहगणायुतम्। वनमादीपयिष्यामि कुरूणामस्त्रतेजसा ॥०४-५६-१२॥
dhvajavṛkṣaṁ pattitṛṇaṁ rathasiṁhagaṇāyutam। vanamādīpayiṣyāmi kurūṇāmastratejasā ॥04-56-12॥
[ध्वजवृक्षं (dhvajavṛkṣam) - banner (and) tree; पत्तितृणं (pattitṛṇam) - leaf (and) grass; रथसिंहगणायुतम् (rathasiṁhagaṇāyutam) - chariot, lion, troop, countless; वनम् (vanam) - forest; आदीपयिष्यामि (ādīpayiṣyāmi) - I will set on fire; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; अस्त्रतेजसा (astratejasā) - by the power of (my) weapon;]
(Banner, tree, leaf, grass, chariot, lion, troop, countless, the forest I will set on fire by the power of the Kurus' weapon.)
I will set ablaze the forest—along with banners, trees, leaves, grass, chariots, lions, and countless troops—by the power of the Kurus' weapon. (04-56-12)
तानहं रथनीडेभ्यः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः। एकः सङ्कालयिष्यामि वज्रपाणिरिवासुरान् ॥०४-५६-१३॥
tānahaṃ rathanīḍebhyaḥ śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ। ekaḥ saṅkālayiṣyāmi vajrapāṇirivāsurān ॥04-56-13॥
[तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I; रथ-नीडेभ्यः (ratha-nīḍebhyaḥ) - from the chariot-seats; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; सन्नत-पर्वभिः (saṃnata-parvabhiḥ) - having well-bent joints; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; सङ्कालयिष्यामि (saṅkālayiṣyāmi) - I will destroy; वज्र-पाणिः (vajra-pāṇiḥ) - the thunderbolt-handed (Indra); इव (iva) - like; असुरान् (asurān) - the asuras (demons);]
(Them I from the chariot-seats with arrows having well-bent joints, alone I will destroy, like thunderbolt-handed (Indra) the asuras.)

रौद्रं रुद्रादहं ह्यस्त्रं वारुणं वरुणादपि। अस्त्रमाग्नेयमग्नेश्च वायव्यं मातरिश्वनः ॥ वज्रादीनि तथास्त्राणि शक्रादहमवाप्तवान् ॥०४-५६-१४॥
raudraṃ rudrād ahaṃ hy astraṃ vāruṇaṃ varuṇād api। astram āgneyaṃ agneś ca vāyavyaṃ mātariśvanaḥ ॥ vajrādīni tathāstrāṇi śakrād aham avāptavān ॥04-56-14॥

(I indeed (have) weapon of Rudra from Rudra, the Varuṇa weapon also from Varuṇa; weapon of Agni from Agni and that of Vāyu from Mātariśvan; the thunderbolt and other such weapons from Śakra I have obtained.)
I have received the weapon of Rudra from Rudra himself, the Varuṇa weapon from Varuṇa as well; the weapon of Agni from Agni, the weapon of Vāyu from Mātariśvan; and likewise, I have obtained the thunderbolt and other such weapons from Śakra. (04-56-14)
धार्तराष्ट्रवनं घोरं नरसिंहाभिरक्षितम्। अहमुत्पाटयिष्यामि वैराटे व्येतु ते भयम् ॥०४-५६-१५॥
dhārtarāṣṭravanaṃ ghoraṃ narasiṃhābhirakṣitam। ahamutpāṭayiṣyāmi vairāṭe vyetu te bhayam ॥04-56-15॥
[धार्तराष्ट्रवनं (dhārtarāṣṭravanam) - the forest of the descendants of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; नरसिंहाभिरक्षितम् (narasiṃhābhirakṣitam) - protected by lion-like men; अहम् (aham) - I; उत्पाटयिष्यामि (utpāṭayiṣyāmi) - will uproot; वैराटे (vairāṭe) - in Virāṭa's (city); व्येतु (vyetu) - may disappear; ते (te) - your; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]

एवमाश्वासितस्तेन वैराटिः सव्यसाचिना। व्यगाहत रथानीकं भीमं भीष्मस्य धीमतः ॥०४-५६-१६॥
evam āśvāsitas tena vairāṭiḥ savyasācinā। vyagāhata rathānīkaṃ bhīmaṃ bhīṣmasya dhīmataḥ ॥04-56-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आश्वसितः (āśvāsitaḥ) - encouraged; तेन (tena) - by him; वैराटिः (vairāṭiḥ) - the son of Virāṭa; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Savyasācin (Arjuna); व्यगाहत (vyagāhata) - penetrated; रथानीकं (rathānīkaṃ) - the chariot-battalion; भीमं (bhīmaṃ) - terrible; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - the wise;]
(Thus encouraged by Savyasācin (Arjuna), the son of Virāṭa penetrated the terrible chariot-battalion of the wise Bhīṣma.)
Thus, encouraged by Savyasācin (Arjuna), the son of Virāṭa broke into the formidable chariot array of the wise Bhīṣma. (04-56-16)
तमायान्तं महाबाहुं जिगीषन्तं रणे परान्। अभ्यवारयदव्यग्रः क्रूरकर्मा धनञ्जयम् ॥०४-५६-१७॥
tam āyāntam mahābāhuṃ jigīṣantam raṇe parān। abhyavārayad avyagraḥ krūrakarmā dhanañjayam ॥04-56-17॥

(Unagitated, the one of cruel deeds blocked Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) who, mighty-armed, was approaching, desiring to conquer the enemies in battle.)
Unruffled, the one of cruel deeds blocked Dhanañjaya, the mighty-armed Arjuna, who advanced desiring to defeat the enemies in battle. (04-56-17)
तं चित्रमाल्याभरणाः कृतविद्या मनस्विनः। आगच्छन्भीमधन्वानं मौर्वीं पर्यस्य बाहुभिः ॥०४-५६-१८॥
taṃ citramālyābharaṇāḥ kṛtavidyā manasvinaḥ। āgacchan bhīmadhanvānaṃ maurvīṃ paryasya bāhubhiḥ॥04-56-18॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; चित्रमाल्याभरणाः (citramālyābharaṇāḥ) - ornamented with variegated garlands and ornaments; कृतविद्या (kṛtavidyā) - accomplished in knowledge; मनस्विनः (manasvinaḥ) - high-minded ones; आगच्छन् (āgacchan) - approaching; भीमधन्वानं (bhīmadhanvānam) - holding a terrible bow; मौर्वीं (maurvīm) - a bowstring made of the fibre of the murva plant; पर्यस्य (paryasya) - having stretched; बाहुभिः (bāhubhiḥ) - with arms;]
(Him, adorned with variegated garlands and ornaments, accomplished in knowledge, high-minded ones, approaching the one holding a terrible bow, having stretched the murva-fibre bowstring with (their) arms.)
Those high-minded ones, accomplished in knowledge and adorned with various garlands and ornaments, approached him who held a terrible bow, having drawn the murva string with their arms. (04-56-18)
दुःशासनो विकर्णश्च दुःसहोऽथ विविंशतिः। आगत्य भीमधन्वानं बीभत्सुं पर्यवारयन् ॥०४-५६-१९॥

Duḥśāsana, Vikarṇa, Duḥsaha and Viviṃśati then came and surrounded Arjuna, the wielder of the great bow, also called Bībhatsu. (04-56-19)

अथैनं पञ्चभिः पश्चात्प्रत्यविध्यत्स्तनान्तरे। सोऽपयातो रणं हित्वा पार्थबाणप्रपीडितः ॥०४-५६-२२॥
athainaṃ pañcabhiḥ paścāt pratyavidhyat stanāntare. so'payāto raṇaṃ hitvā pārthabāṇaprapīḍitaḥ॥04-56-22॥

(Then him with five from behind struck in the space between the breasts. He retreated, the battle having left, oppressed by Arjuna's arrows.)
Then, someone struck him from behind with five (arrows) in the space between the breasts; thus, wounded by Arjuna's arrows, he left the battle and retreated. (04-56-22)
तं विकर्णः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्गार्ध्रपत्रैरजिह्मगैः। विव्याध परवीरघ्नमर्जुनं धृतराष्ट्रजः ॥०४-५६-२३॥
taṃ vikarṇaḥ śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ gārdhrapatraiḥ ajihmagaiḥ। vivyādha paravīraghnam arjunaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ॥04-56-23॥

ततस्तमपि कौन्तेयः शरेणानतपर्वणा। ललाटेऽभ्यहनत्तूर्णं स विद्धः प्रापतद्रथात् ॥०४-५६-२४॥
tatas tam api kaunteyaḥ śareṇānataparvaṇā. lalāṭe’bhyahanattūrṇaṃ sa viddhaḥ prāpatadrathāt ॥04-56-24॥

(Then him also the son of Kunti with an arrow sharp-edged on the forehead struck quickly; he pierced fell down from the chariot.)
Then the son of Kunti quickly struck him also on the forehead with a sharp-edged arrow; pierced, he fell from the chariot. (04-56-24)
ततः पार्थमभिद्रुत्य दुःसहः सविविंशतिः। अवाकिरच्छरैस्तीक्ष्णैः परीप्सन्भ्रातरं रणे ॥०४-५६-२५॥
tataḥ pārtham abhidrutya duḥsahaḥ saviviṃśatiḥ. avākirac charais tīkṣṇaiḥ parīpsan bhrātaraṃ raṇe ॥04-56-25॥

(Then, having rushed towards Arjuna, Duḥsaha together with twenty (companions), desiring to overpower the brother, covered him in battle with sharp arrows.)
Then Duḥsaha, along with twenty others, rushed at Arjuna and, wishing to subdue his brother in battle, covered him with sharp arrows. (04-56-25)
तावुभौ गार्ध्रपत्राभ्यां निशिताभ्यां धनञ्जयः। विद्ध्वा युगपदव्यग्रस्तयोर्वाहानसूदयत् ॥०४-५६-२६॥
tāv ubhau gārdhrapatrābhyām niśitābhyām dhanañjayaḥ। viddhvā yugapad avyagrastayor vāhān asūdayat॥04-56-26॥

(Those two, both, with two vulture-feathered, sharp (arrows), Dhananjaya, having pierced, simultaneously, undisturbed, their vehicles, destroyed.)
Dhananjaya (Arjuna), undisturbed, simultaneously pierced and destroyed the vehicles of both of them with two sharp, vulture-feathered arrows. (04-56-26)
तौ हताश्वौ विविद्धाङ्गौ धृतराष्ट्रात्मजावुभौ। अभिपत्य रथैरन्यैरपनीतौ पदानुगैः ॥०४-५६-२७॥
tau hatāśvau vividdhāṅgau dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajāvubhau। abhipatya rathairanyairapanītau padānugaiḥ ॥04-56-27॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; हताश्वौ (hatāśvau) - having dead horses; विविद्धाङ्गौ (vividdhāṅgau) - with pierced bodies; धृतराष्ट्रात्मजौ (dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajau) - sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; उभौ (ubhau) - both; अभिपत्य (abhipatya) - having approached; रथैः (rathaiḥ) - by chariots; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; अपनीतौ (apanītau) - carried away; पदानुगैः (padānugaiḥ) - by foot followers;]
(Those two, having dead horses, with pierced bodies, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, both, having approached, by chariots of others, were carried away by the foot followers.)
Those two sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, both with dead horses and pierced bodies, having been approached, were carried away by foot soldiers in other chariots. (04-56-27)
सर्वा दिशश्चाभ्यपतद्बीभत्सुरपराजितः। किरीटमाली कौन्तेयो लब्धलक्षो महाबलः ॥०४-५६-२८॥
sarvā diśaś cābhyapatad bībhatsur aparājitaḥ। kirīṭamālī kaunteyo labdhalakṣo mahābalaḥ॥04-56-28॥
[सर्वा (sarvā) - all; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; अभ्यपतत् (abhyapatat) - he rushed towards; बीभत्सु (bībhatsu) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - unconquered; किरीटमाली (kirīṭamālī) - the one adorned with a diadem; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kuntī; लब्धलक्षः (labdhalakṣaḥ) - one who has obtained the aim; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength;]
(And Bībhatsu, unconquered, the son of Kuntī, adorned with a diadem, of great strength, who had obtained his aim, rushed towards all directions.)
Bībhatsu (Arjuna), the unconquered son of Kuntī, crowned with his diadem, greatly powerful and having achieved his objective, rushed towards all directions. (04-56-28)
