अथ सङ्गम्य सर्वे तु कौरवाणां महारथाः। अर्जुनं सहिता यत्ताः प्रत्ययुध्यन्त भारत ॥०४-५७-१॥

atha saṅgamya sarve tu kauravāṇāṃ mahārathāḥ। arjunaṃ sahitā yattāḥ pratyayudhyanta bhārata ॥04-57-1॥

[अथ (atha) - then; सङ्गम्य (saṅgamya) - having assembled together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तु (tu) - but; कौरवाणां (kauravāṇāṃ) - of the Kauravas; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; अर्जुनं (arjunaṃ) - Arjuna; सहिता (sahitā) - together; यत्ताः (yattāḥ) - prepared; प्रत्ययुध्यन्त (pratyayudhyanta) - fought against; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]

(Then, having assembled, all the great chariot-warriors of the Kauravas, together, prepared, fought against Arjuna, O Bhārata.)

Then, O Bhārata, all the great chariot-warriors of the Kauravas, having gathered together and being prepared, fought against Arjuna. (04-57-1)

स सायकमयैर्जालैः सर्वतस्तान्महारथान्। प्राच्छादयदमेयात्मा नीहार इव पर्वतान् ॥०४-५७-२॥

sa sāyakamayair jālaiḥ sarvatas tān mahārathān। prācchādayad ameyātmā nīhāra iva parvatān॥04-57-2॥

[स (sa) - he; सायकमयैः (sāyakamayaiḥ) - with arrow-made; जालैः (jālaiḥ) - with nets; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; तान् (tān) - those; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great chariot-warriors; प्राच्छादयत् (prācchādayat) - covered; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable spirit; नीहारः (nīhāraḥ) - fog; इव (iva) - like; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains;]

(He with arrow-made nets on all sides those great chariot-warriors covered, of immeasurable spirit, like fog (covers) mountains.)

He, of immeasurable spirit, covered those great chariot-warriors on all sides with nets made of arrows, just as fog envelops mountains. (04-57-2)

नदद्भिश्च महानागैर्हेषमाणैश्च वाजिभिः। भेरीशङ्खनिनादैश्च स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥०४-५७-३॥

nadadbhiś ca mahānāgair heṣamāṇaiś ca vājibhiḥ | bherīśaṅkhaninādaiś ca sa śabdas tumulo 'bhavat ||04-57-3||

(By those sounding and by great elephants, by those neighing and by horses, by sounds of drums and conches and that sound became tumultuous.)

The sound created by the roaring elephants, the neighing horses, and the blaring of drums and conches became deafening. (04-57-3)

नराश्वकायान्निर्भिद्य लोहानि कवचानि च। पार्थस्य शरजालानि विनिष्पेतुः सहस्रशः ॥०४-५७-४॥

narāśvakāyān nirbhidya lohāni kavacāni ca। pārthasya śarajālāni viniṣpetuḥ sahasraśaḥ ॥04-57-4॥

[नराश्वकायान् (narāśvakāyān) - men-and-horses-bodies; निर्भिद्य (nirbhidya) - having pierced; लोहानि (lohāni) - iron (objects); कवचानि (kavacāni) - armors; च (ca) - and; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); शरजालानि (śarajālāni) - arrow-nets; विनिष्पेतुः (viniṣpetuḥ) - came out; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - in thousands;]

(Having pierced the bodies of men and horses, and (also) the iron armors, from Pārtha thousands of nets of arrows came out.)

Thousands of arrows shot forth from Arjuna, piercing the bodies of men and horses and breaking through iron armors. (04-57-4)

त्वरमाणः शरानस्यन्पाण्डवः स बभौ रणे। मध्यंदिनगतोऽर्चिष्माञ्शरदीव दिवाकरः ॥०४-५७-५॥

tvaramāṇaḥ śarān asyan pāṇḍavaḥ sa babhau raṇe. madhyaṃdinagato'rciṣmāñ śaradīva divākaraḥ ॥04-57-5॥

[त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hastening; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; अस्यन् (asyan) - releasing; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna); सः (saḥ) - he; बभौ (babhau) - shone; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; मध्यंदिनगतः (madhyaṃdinagataḥ) - reaching midday; अर्चिष्मान् (arciṣmān) - radiant; शरदि (śaradi) - in autumn; इव (iva) - like; दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - the sun;]

(Hastening, releasing arrows, the Pāṇḍava, he shone in battle, reaching midday, radiant, like the sun in autumn.)

Hurriedly releasing arrows, the Pāṇḍava shone in battle like the radiant sun of autumn at midday. (04-57-5)

उपप्लवन्त वित्रस्ता रथेभ्यो रथिनस्तदा। सादिनश्चाश्वपृष्ठेभ्यो भूमौ चापि पदातयः ॥०४-५७-६॥

upaplavanta vitrastā rathebhyo rathinas tadā। sādiṇaś cāśvapṛṣṭhebhyo bhūmau cāpi padātayaḥ ॥04-57-6॥

(Leaping down, the frightened charioteers then from the chariots; the riders also from the backs of horses, and also the foot-soldiers on the ground.)

Then, frightened charioteers leapt down from their chariots; riders from the backs of horses, and even the foot-soldiers on the ground.

शरैः सन्ताड्यमानानां कवचानां महात्मनाम्। ताम्रराजतलोहानां प्रादुरासीन्महास्वनः ॥०४-५७-७॥

śaraiḥ santāḍyamānānāṃ kavacānāṃ mahātmanām। tāmra-rājata-lohānāṃ prādurāsīn mahāsvanaḥ ॥04-57-7॥

(Of the armors of the great-souled ones, being struck with arrows, of copper, silver, and iron, a great sound arose.)

A great sound arose from the armors of the great-souled warriors, made of copper, silver, and iron, as they were struck with arrows. (04-57-7)

छन्नमायोधनं सर्वं शरीरैर्गतचेतसाम्। गजाश्वसादिभिस्तत्र शितबाणात्तजीवितैः ॥०४-५७-८॥

channam āyodhanaṁ sarvaṁ śarīraiḥ gata-cetasām। gaja-aśva-sādibhiḥ tatra śita-bāṇa-atta-jīvitaiḥ ॥04-57-8॥

[छन्नम् (channam) - covered; आयोधनम् (āyodhanam) - battlefield; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; शरीरैः (śarīraiḥ) - with bodies; गतचेतसाम् (gata-cetasām) - of those who have lost consciousness/life; गजाश्वसादिभिः (gaja-aśva-sādibhiḥ) - with elephants, horses, and others; तत्र (tatra) - there; शितबाणात्तजीवितैः (śita-bāṇa-atta-jīvitaiḥ) - whose lives have been seized by sharp arrows;]

(All the battlefield there was covered with the bodies of those who had lost consciousness, with elephants, horses, and others whose lives had been seized by sharp arrows.)

The entire battlefield there was strewn with the bodies of those who had perished—elephants, horses, and others, their lives taken by sharp arrows. (04-57-8)

रथोपस्थाभिपतितैरास्तृता मानवैर्मही। प्रनृत्यदिव सङ्ग्रामे चापहस्तो धनञ्जयः ॥०४-५७-९॥

rathopasthābhipatitair āstṛtā manavair mahī. pranṛtyad iva saṅgrāme cāpahasto dhanañjayaḥ ॥04-57-9॥

[रथोपस्थ-अभिपतितैः (rathopastha-abhipatitaiḥ) - by those fallen upon the chariot-platform; आस्तृता (āstṛtā) - covered; मानवैः (manavaiḥ) - by men; मही (mahī) - earth; प्रनृत्यद्-इव (pranṛtyad-iva) - as if dancing; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; चाप-हस्तः (cāpa-hastaḥ) - bow-handed; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]

(The earth was covered by men fallen upon the chariot-platform; as if dancing in battle, Arjuna with bow in hand.)

श्रुत्वा गाण्डीवनिर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः। त्रस्तानि सर्वभूतानि व्यगच्छन्त महाहवात् ॥०४-५७-१०॥

śrutvā gāṇḍīva-nirghoṣaṃ visphūrjitam iva āśaneḥ। trastāni sarva-bhūtāni vyagacchanta mahā-havāt ॥04-57-10॥

[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; गाण्डीवनिर्घोषं (gāṇḍīva-nirghoṣam) - the loud sound of the Gandiva (bow); विस्फूर्जितमिव (visphūrjitam iva) - like the thunder; आशनेः (āśaneḥ) - of thunderbolt; त्रस्तानि (trastāni) - frightened; सर्वभूतानि (sarva-bhūtāni) - all beings; व्यगच्छन्त (vyagacchanta) - departed; महाहवात् (mahā-havāt) - from the great battle;]

(Having heard the Gandiva's loud sound, like the thunder of a thunderbolt, frightened all beings departed from the great battle.)

When all beings heard the resounding noise of the Gandiva, like the thunder of a thunderbolt, they fled in terror from the great battle. (04-57-10)

कुण्डलोष्णीषधारीणि जातरूपस्रजानि च। पतितानि स्म दृश्यन्ते शिरांसि रणमूर्धनि ॥०४-५७-११॥

kuṇḍaloṣṇīṣadhārīṇi jātarūpasrajāni ca। patitāni sma dṛśyante śirāṁsi raṇamūrdhani ॥04-57-11॥

[कुण्डलोष्णीषधारीणि (kuṇḍaloṣṇīṣadhārīṇi) - wearing ear-rings and turbans; जातरूपस्रजानि (jātarūpasrajāni) - with golden garlands; च (ca) - and; पतितानि (patitāni) - fallen; स्म (sma) - indeed; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; शिरांसि (śirāṁsi) - heads; रणमूर्धनि (raṇamūrdhani) - on the battlefield;]

(Wearing ear-rings and turbans, with golden garlands and, fallen indeed are seen heads on the battlefield.)

Heads adorned with ear-rings, turbans, and golden garlands are indeed seen fallen on the battlefield. (04-57-11)

विशिखोन्मथितैर्गात्रैर्बाहुभिश्च सकार्मुकैः। सहस्ताभरणैश्चान्यैः प्रच्छन्ना भाति मेदिनी ॥०४-५७-१२॥

viśikhonmathitair gātrair bāhubhiś ca sakārmukaiḥ। sahastābharaṇaiś cānyaiḥ prachannā bhāti medinī ॥04-57-12॥

[विशिखोन्मथितैः (viśikhonmathitaiḥ) - by (those) pierced by arrows; गात्रैः (gātraiḥ) - by bodies; बाहुभिः (bāhubhiḥ) - by arms; च (ca) - and; सकार्मुकैः (sakārmukaiḥ) - with bows; सहस्ताभरणैः (sahastābharaṇaiḥ) - with ornaments on the hands; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; प्रच्छन्ना (prachannā) - covered; भाति (bhāti) - shines; मेदिनी (medinī) - the earth;]

(By bodies pierced by arrows, by arms with bows, and by others with ornaments on the hands, covered, the earth shines.)

The earth appears covered and glows with bodies pierced by arrows, arms bearing bows, and others adorned with ornaments on their hands. (04-57-12)

शिरसां पात्यमानानामन्तरा निशितैः शरैः। अश्मवृष्टिरिवाकाशादभवद्भरतर्षभ ॥०४-५७-१३॥

śirasāṁ pātyamānānām antarā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ। aśmavṛṣṭir iv ākāśād abhavad bharatarṣabha ॥04-57-13॥

[शिरसां (śirasām) - of heads; पात्यमानानाम् (pātyamānānām) - falling; अन्तरा (antarā) - among; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - by sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows; अश्मवृष्टिः (aśmavṛṣṭiḥ) - a shower of stones; इव (iva) - like; आकाशात् (ākāśāt) - from the sky; अभवत् (abhavat) - came to be; भरतरर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]

(Of heads falling among, by sharp arrows, a shower of stones, like, from the sky, arose, O bull among the Bharatas.)

O bull among the Bharatas, among the falling heads, sharp arrows came like a shower of stones from the sky. (04-57-13)

दर्शयित्वा तथात्मानं रौद्रं रुद्रपराक्रमः। अवरुद्धश्चरन्पार्थो दशवर्षाणि त्रीणि च ॥ क्रोधाग्निमुत्सृजद्घोरं धार्तराष्ट्रेषु पाण्डवः ॥०४-५७-१४॥

darśayitvā tathātmānaṃ raudraṃ rudraparākramaḥ। avaruddhaś caran pārtho daśa varṣāṇi trīṇi ca ॥ krodhāgnim utsṛjad ghoram dhārtarāṣṭreṣu pāṇḍavaḥ ॥04-57-14॥

[दर्शयित्वा (darśayitvā) - having shown; तथा (tathā) - thus; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - himself; रौद्रं (raudraṃ) - terrible; रुद्रपराक्रमः (rudraparākramaḥ) - of Rudra-like power; अवरुद्धः (avaruddhaḥ) - imprisoned; चरत् (caran) - dwelling; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); दश (daśa) - ten; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; च (ca) - and; क्रोधाग्निम् (krodhāgnim) - the fire of wrath; उत्सृजत् (utsṛjat) - released; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; धार्तराष्ट्रेषु (dhārtarāṣṭreṣu) - upon the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna);]

(Having shown thus himself (as) terrible, of Rudra-like power, imprisoned, dwelling (there), Pārtha ten years and three also; the Pāṇḍava released fire of wrath, terrible, upon the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.)

Showing himself as terrible and endowed with Rudra's might, Pārtha (Arjuna), who dwelt in captivity for thirteen years, released a dreadful fire of wrath upon the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (04-57-14)

तस्य तद्दहतः सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा चैव पराक्रमम्। सर्वे शान्तिपरा योधा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य पश्यतः ॥०४-५७-१५॥

tasya taddahataḥ sainyaṁ dṛṣṭvā caiva parākramam। sarve śāntiparā yodhā dhārtarāṣṭrasya paśyataḥ॥04-57-15॥

[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that; दहतः (dahataḥ) - burning; सैन्यं (sainyam) - army; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पराक्रमम् (parākramam) - valor; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शान्तिपराः (śāntiparāḥ) - peace-seeking; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra’s (son); पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while watching;]

(Of him, that burning army having seen and indeed valor, all peace-seeking warriors of Dhritarashtra’s (sons) while watching.)

Seeing the army of his being burned and his valor, all the peace-seeking warriors of Dhritarashtra’s side watched.

वित्रासयित्वा तत्सैन्यं द्रावयित्वा महारथान्। अर्जुनो जयतां श्रेष्ठः पर्यवर्तत भारत ॥०४-५७-१६॥

vitrāsayitvā tatsainyaṁ drāvayitvā mahārathān। arjuno jayatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ paryavartata bhārata ॥04-57-16॥

[वित्रासयित्वा (vitrāsayitvā) - having terrified; तत्सैन्यं (tatsainyaṁ) - that army; द्रावयित्वा (drāvayitvā) - having put to flight; महारथान् (mahārathān) - the great chariot-warriors; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; जयतां (jayatāṁ) - among the victorious; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; पर्यवर्तत (paryavartata) - turned back; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]

(Having terrified that army, having put to flight the great chariot-warriors, Arjuna, the best among the victorious, turned back, O Bhārata.)

O Bhārata, having terrified that army and driven away the great chariot-warriors, Arjuna, the foremost among the victorious, turned back. (04-57-16)

प्रावर्तयन्नदीं घोरां शोणितौघतरङ्गिणीम्। अस्थिशैवलसम्बाधां युगान्ते कालनिर्मिताम् ॥०४-५७-१७॥

prāvartayannadīṃ ghorāṃ śoṇitaughataraṅgiṇīm। asthiśaivalasambādhāṃ yugānte kālanirmitām ॥04-57-17॥

शरचापप्लवां घोरां मांसशोणितकर्दमाम्। महारथमहाद्वीपां शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिस्वनाम् ॥ चकार महतीं पार्थो नदीमुत्तरशोणिताम् ॥०४-५७-१८॥

śara-cāpa-plavāṃ ghorāṃ māṃsa-śoṇita-kardamām। mahā-ratha-mahā-dvīpāṃ śaṅkha-dundubhi-nisvanām ॥ cakāra mahatīṃ pārtho nadīm-uttara-śoṇitām ॥04-57-18॥

[शरचापप्लवां (śara-cāpa-plavām) - having arrows and bows as rafts; घोरां (ghorām) - terrible; मांसशोणितकर्दमाम् (māṃsa-śoṇita-kardamām) - with mud of flesh and blood; महारथमहाद्वीपां (mahāratha-mahādvīpām) - having the great warriors as large islands; शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिस्वनाम् (śaṅkha-dundubhi-nisvanām) - resounding with conches and drums; चकार (cakāra) - made; महतीं (mahatīm) - great; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); नदीम् (nadīm) - a river; उत्तरशोणिताम् (uttara-śoṇitām) - flowing with blood;]

(Pārtha made a great river having arrows and bows as rafts, terrible, with mud of flesh and blood, having the great warriors as large islands, resounding with conches and drums, flowing with blood.)

आददानस्य हि शरान्सन्धाय च विमुञ्चतः। विकर्षतश्च गाण्डीवं न किञ्चिद्दृश्यतेऽन्तरम् ॥०४-५७-१९॥

ādadānasya hi śarān sandhāya ca vimuñcataḥ. vikarṣataś ca gāṇḍīvam na kiñcid dṛśyate'ntaram ॥04-57-19॥

(Of taking up, indeed, arrows, fixing and releasing, of drawing the Gandiva bow, not anything is seen (as) difference.)

Indeed, in the actions of taking up arrows, fixing them, releasing them, and drawing the Gandiva bow, no difference at all can be seen. (04-57-19)
