पुनरीयुः सुसंरब्धा धनञ्जयजिघांसया। विस्फारयन्तश्चापानि बलवन्ति दृढानि च ॥०४-५८-२॥
punarīyuḥ susaṁrabdhā dhanañjayajighāṁsayā। visphārayantaś cāpāni balavanti dṛḍhāni ca ॥04-58-2॥
[पुनः (punar) (punar) - again; ईयुः (īyuḥ) (īyuḥ) - they went; सुसंरब्धाः (susaṁrabdhāḥ) (susaṁrabdhāḥ) - very enraged; धनञ्जयजिघांसया (dhanañjayajighāṁsayā) (dhanañjaya-jighāṁsayā) - with the intention to slay Dhanañjaya; विस्फारयन्तः (visphārayantaḥ) (visphārayantaḥ) - stretching; चापानि (cāpāni) (cāpāni) - bows; बलवन्ति (balavanti) (balavanti) - strong; दृढानि (dṛḍhāni) (dṛḍhāni) - firm; च (ca) (ca) - and;]
(Again they went, very enraged, with the intention to slay Dhanañjaya, stretching bows, strong and firm and.)
Again, greatly enraged with the desire to slay Dhanañjaya, they advanced, stretching their strong and firm bows. (04-58-2)
तान्प्रकीर्णपताकेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा। प्रत्युद्ययौ महाराज समस्तान्वानरध्वजः ॥०४-५८-३॥
tān prakīrṇapatākena rathena ādityavarcasā। pratyudyayau mahārāja samastān vānaradhvajaḥ ॥04-58-3॥
[तान् (tān) - them; प्रकीर्णपताकेन (prakīrṇapatākena) - with scattered banners; रथेन (rathena) - with the chariot; आदित्यवर्चसा (ādityavarcasā) - with the brilliance of the sun; प्रत्युद्ययौ (pratyudyayau) - approached; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; समस्तान् (samastān) - all; वानरध्वजः (vānaradhvajaḥ) - the one whose banner is the monkey;]

ततः कृपश्च कर्णश्च द्रोणश्च रथिनां वरः। तं महास्त्रैर्महावीर्यं परिवार्य धनञ्जयम् ॥०४-५८-४॥
tataḥ kṛpaś ca karṇaś ca droṇaś ca rathināṃ varaḥ। taṃ mahāstrair mahā-vīryaṃ parivārya dhanañjayam॥04-58-4॥

(Then Kṛpa and Karṇa and Droṇa, the best of chariot-warriors, having surrounded Dhanañjaya of great valor with mighty missiles.)
Then Kṛpa, Karṇa, and Droṇa, the best among chariot-warriors, surrounded the mighty Dhanañjaya with powerful weapons. (04-58-4)
शरौघान्सम्यगस्यन्तो जीमूता इव वार्षिकाः। ववर्षुः शरवर्षाणि प्रपतन्तं किरीटिनम् ॥०४-५८-५॥
śaraughān samyag asyantaḥ jīmūtā iva vārṣikāḥ। vavarṣuḥ śaravarṣāṇi prapatantaṃ kirīṭinam ॥04-58-5॥
[शरौघान् (śaraughān) - arrow-multitudes; सम्यक् (samyak) - completely; स्यन्तः (asyantaḥ) - pouring; जीमूताः (jīmūtāḥ) - clouds; इव (iva) - like; वार्षिकाः (vārṣikāḥ) - rainy-season; ववर्षुः (vavarṣuḥ) - rained; शरवर्षाणि (śaravarṣāṇi) - arrow-showers; प्रपतन्तम् (prapatantam) - falling; किरीटिनम् (kirīṭinam) - the crowned one;]
(Arrow-multitudes completely pouring like rainy-season clouds rained arrow-showers on the falling crowned one.)
Like clouds of the rainy season pouring down, they showered volleys of arrows upon the falling warrior wearing a crown. (04-58-5)
इषुभिर्बहुभिस्तूर्णं समरे लोमवाहिभिः। अदूरात्पर्यवस्थाय पूरयामासुरादृताः ॥०४-५८-६॥
iṣubhir bahubhis tūrṇam samare lomavāhibhiḥ। adūrāt paryavasthāya pūrayām āsur ādṛtāḥ॥04-58-6॥
[इषुभिः (iṣubhiḥ) - with arrows; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - many; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - swiftly; समरे (samare) - in battle; लोमवाहिभिः (lomavāhibhiḥ) - with hairy ones (monkeys); अदूरात् (adūrāt) - from not far (from nearby); पर्यवस्थाय (paryavasthāya) - having stationed themselves around; पूरयाम् (pūrayām) - they filled; आसुः (āsuḥ) - they made (did); आदृताः (ādṛtāḥ) - with zeal;]
(With many arrows, swiftly, in battle, with hairy ones, from nearby, having stationed themselves around, they filled, they did, with zeal.)
With many arrows, the zealous monkeys swiftly surrounded the battlefield from nearby and filled it. (04-58-6)
तथावकीर्णस्य हि तैर्दिव्यैरस्त्रैः समन्ततः। न तस्य द्व्यङ्गुलमपि विवृतं समदृश्यत ॥०४-५८-७॥
tathāvakīrṇasya hi tair divyair astraiḥ samantataḥ। na tasya dvyaṅgulam api vivṛtaṃ samadṛśyata ॥04-58-7॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; अवकीर्णस्य (avakīrṇasya) - of the one who had been showered over; scattered upon; हि (hi) - indeed; for; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - divine; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - by weapons; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; all around; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - of him; द्व्यङ्गुलम् (dvyaṅgulam) - two-fingers (width); अपि (api) - even; विवृतम् (vivṛtam) - open; exposed; समदृश्यत (samadṛśyata) - was seen; observed;]
(Thus, of the one who had been showered over by those divine weapons on all sides, not even two fingers width of him was observed as open.)
Thus, as he was showered on all sides by those divine weapons, not even a space as wide as two fingers of him could be seen as exposed. (04-58-7)
ततः प्रहस्य बीभत्सुर्दिव्यमैन्द्रं महारथः। अस्त्रमादित्यसङ्काशं गाण्डीवे समयोजयत् ॥०४-५८-८॥
tataḥ prahasya bībhatsur divyam aindraṃ mahārathaḥ। astram ādityasaṅkāśaṃ gāṇḍīve samayojayat ॥04-58-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; ऐन्द्रम् (aindram) - of Indra; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - the great chariot-warrior; अस्त्रम् (astram) - missile; आदित्यसङ्काशम् (ādityasaṅkāśam) - shining like the sun; गाण्डीवे (gāṇḍīve) - on the Gāṇḍīva (bow); समयोजयत् (samayojayat) - he fitted;]
(Then, having smiled, Bībhatsu, the great chariot-warrior, fitted the divine Indra's missile, shining like the sun, on the Gāṇḍīva.)
Then, having smiled, Bībhatsu (Arjuna), the mighty chariot-warrior, fitted the divine Indra missile, radiant like the sun, to his Gāṇḍīva bow. (04-58-8)
स रश्मिभिरिवादित्यः प्रतपन्समरे बली। किरीटमाली कौन्तेयः सर्वान्प्राच्छादयत्कुरून् ॥०४-५८-९॥
sa raśmibhir ivādityaḥ pratapan samare balī। kirīṭamālī kaunteyaḥ sarvān prācchādayat kurūn॥04-58-9॥
[स (sa) - he; रश्मिभिः (raśmibhiḥ) - with rays; इव (iva) - like; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - sun; प्रतपन् (pratapan) - scorching; समरे (samare) - in battle; बली (balī) - mighty; किरीटमाली (kirīṭamālī) - wearing a crown; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; प्राच्छादयत् (prācchādayat) - covered; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus;]
(He, with rays like the sun scorching, in battle, mighty, wearing a crown, the son of Kunti, all covered the Kurus.)
He, like the sun scorching with his rays in battle—mighty, crowned, the son of Kunti—covered all the Kurus. (04-58-9)
यथा बलाहके विद्युत्पावको वा शिलोच्चये। तथा गाण्डीवमभवदिन्द्रायुधमिवाततम् ॥०४-५८-१०॥
yathā balāhake vidyutpāvako vā śilocchaye। tathā gāṇḍīvam abhavad indrāyudham ivātatam ॥04-58-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; बलाहके (balāhake) - in the cloud; विद्युत् (vidyut) - lightning; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; (here: shining) वा (vā) - or; शिलोच्चये (śilocchaye) - on the mountain peak; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva (the bow); अभवत् (abhavat) - became; इन्द्रायुधम् (indrāyudham) - Indra's weapon (rainbow); इव (iva) - like; आततम् (ātatam) - stretched;]
(Just as in the cloud the lightning or the fire on the mountain peak, so the Gāṇḍīva bow became like Indra's weapon, stretched.)
Just as lightning appears in the cloud or fire shines on a mountain peak, so the Gāṇḍīva bow looked, stretched like Indra's weapon (the rainbow). (04-58-10)
यथा वर्षति पर्जन्ये विद्युद्विभ्राजते दिवि। तथा दश दिशः सर्वाः पतद्गाण्डीवमावृणोत् ॥०४-५८-११॥
yathā varṣati parjanye vidyud-vibhrājate divi। tathā daśa diśaḥ sarvāḥ patad-gāṇḍīvam-āvṛṇot ॥04-58-11॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; वर्षति (varṣati) - rains; पर्जन्ये (parjanye) - in the cloud; विद्युत् (vidyut) - lightning; विभ्राजते (vibhrājate) - shines; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; तथा (tathā) - so; दश (daśa) - ten; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; पतत्-गाण्डीवम् (patad-gāṇḍīvam) - flying (or falling) Gāṇḍīva (the bow); आवृणोत् (āvṛṇot) - covered;]
(Just as it rains in the cloud, lightning shines in the sky, so in all ten directions, the flying Gāṇḍīva covered.)
Just as when it rains in the cloud and lightning flashes in the sky, so too did the flying Gāṇḍīva cover all ten directions. (04-58-11)
त्रस्ताश्च रथिनः सर्वे बभूवुस्तत्र सर्वशः। सर्वे शान्तिपरा भूत्वा स्वचित्तानि न लेभिरे ॥ सङ्ग्रामविमुखाः सर्वे योधास्ते हतचेतसः ॥०४-५८-१२॥
trastāś ca rathinaḥ sarve babhūvus tatra sarvaśaḥ। sarve śāntiparā bhūtvā svacittāni na lebhire॥ saṅgrāmavimukhāḥ sarve yodhās te hatacetasaḥ॥04-58-12॥
[त्रस्ताः (trastāḥ) (trastāḥ) - frightened; च (ca) (ca) - and; रथिनः (rathinaḥ) (rathinaḥ) - chariot-warriors; सर्वे (sarve) (sarve) - all; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) (babhūvuḥ) - became; तत्र (tatra) (tatra) - there; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; सर्वे (sarve) (sarve) - all; शान्तिपराः (śāntiparāḥ) (śāntiparāḥ) - peace-seeking; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) (bhūtvā) - becoming; स्वचित्तानि (svacittāni) (svacittāni) - their own minds; न (na) (na) - not; लेभिरे (lebhire) (lebhire) - obtained; सङ्ग्रामविमुखाः (saṅgrāmavimukhāḥ) (saṅgrāmavimukhāḥ) - turned away from battle; सर्वे (sarve) (sarve) - all; योधाः (yodhāḥ) (yodhāḥ) - warriors; ते (te) (te) - they; हतचेतसः (hatacetasaḥ) (hatacetasaḥ) - whose minds were destroyed;]
(Frightened and all the chariot-warriors became there entirely. All becoming peace-seeking did not obtain their own minds. Turned away from battle, all those warriors, whose minds were destroyed.)
All the chariot-warriors became frightened there—all of them. All of them, having become intent on peace, could not regain their own minds. All those warriors, turned away from battle, were bereft of sense. (04-58-12)
एवं सर्वाणि सैन्यानि भग्नानि भरतर्षभ। प्राद्रवन्त दिशः सर्वा निराशानि स्वजीविते ॥०४-५८-१३॥
evaṃ sarvāṇi sainyāni bhagnāni bharatarṣabha। prādravanta diśaḥ sarvā nirāśāni svajīvite ॥04-58-13॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - armies; भग्नानि (bhagnāni) - defeated; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; प्राद्रवन्त (prādravanta) - fled; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; निराशानि (nirāśāni) - despairing; स्वजीविते (svajīvite) - of their own lives;]
(Thus all armies defeated, O bull among the Bharatas, fled in all directions, despairing of their own lives.)
Thus, O bull among the Bharatas, all the defeated armies fled in every direction, despairing for their very lives. (04-58-13)
