ततः शान्तनवो भीष्मो दुराधर्षः प्रतापवान्। वध्यमानेषु योधेषु धनञ्जयमुपाद्रवत् ॥०४-५९-१॥
tataḥ śāntanavo bhīṣmo durādharṣaḥ pratāpavān। vadhyamāneṣu yodheṣu dhanañjayam upādravat॥04-59-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śāntanu; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; दुराधर्षः (durādharṣaḥ) - difficult to assail; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - endowed with splendour; वध्यमानेषु (vadhyamāneṣu) - when being killed; योधेषु (yodheṣu) - among the warriors; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); उपाद्रवत् (upādravat) - assailed;]
(Then the son of Śāntanu, Bhīṣma, difficult to assail, endowed with splendour, when the warriors were being killed, Dhanañjaya assailed.)
Then Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, who was difficult to assail and possessed of great splendour, attacked Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) as the warriors were being slain. (04-59-1)
प्रगृह्य कार्मुकश्रेष्ठं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम्। शरानादाय तीक्ष्णाग्रान्मर्मभेदप्रमाथिनः ॥०४-५९-२॥

पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन मूर्धनि। शुशुभे स नरव्याघ्रो गिरिः सूर्योदये यथा ॥०४-५९-३॥

प्रध्माय शङ्खं गाङ्गेयो धार्तराष्ट्रान्प्रहर्षयन्। प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य बीभत्सुं समवारयत् ॥०४-५९-४॥
pradhamāya śaṅkhaṃ gāṅgeyo dhārtarāṣṭrān praharṣayan। pradakṣiṇam upāvṛtya bībhatsuṃ samavārayat ॥04-59-4॥

(Having blown the conch, the son of Gaṅgā, delighting the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having turned towards the right, restrained Bībhatsu.)
After blowing the conch, Bhīṣma (the son of Gaṅgā), gladdening the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, turned to the right and blocked Arjuna (Bībhatsu). (04-59-4)
तमुद्वीक्ष्य तथायान्तं कौन्तेयः परवीरहा। प्रत्यगृह्णात्प्रहृष्टात्मा धाराधरमिवाचलः ॥०४-५९-५॥
tam udvīkṣya tathā yāntam kaunteyaḥ paravīra-hā। pratyagṛhṇāt prahṛṣṭātmā dhārā-dharam iva acalaḥ॥04-59-5॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उद्वीक्ष्य (udvīkṣya) - having looked up at; तथा (tathā) - thus; यान्तम् (yāntam) - coming; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; परवीरहा (paravīra-hā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - received; प्रहृष्टात्मा (prahṛṣṭātmā) - his heart rejoicing; धाराधरम् (dhārā-dharam) - the mountain; इव (iva) - like; अचलः (acalaḥ) - immovable;]
(Having looked up at him coming thus, Kunti's son, destroyer of enemy heroes, his heart rejoicing, received him, immovable like a mountain.)
Seeing him thus approaching, Kunti's son, the destroyer of enemy heroes, with a rejoicing heart, received him, steadfast as a mountain. (04-59-5)
ततो भीष्मः शरानष्टौ ध्वजे पार्थस्य वीर्यवान्। समपर्यन्महावेगाञ्श्वसमानानिवोरगान् ॥०४-५९-६॥
tato bhīṣmaḥ śarānaṣṭau dhvaje pārthasya vīryavān। samaparyanmahāvegāñśvasamānānivoragān॥04-59-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; ध्वजे (dhvaje) - at the banner; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha (Arjuna); वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - mighty; समपर्यन् (samaparyan) - sent/shot (he completely discharged); महावेगान् (mahāvegān) - of great speed; श्वसमानानिव (śvasamānān iva) - as if hissing; उरगान् (uragān) - serpents;]
(Then Bhishma, mighty, shot eight arrows at the banner of Partha, of great speed, as if hissing snakes.)
Then Bhishma, mighty in valor, shot eight arrows at Arjuna’s banner, swift as hissing serpents. (04-59-6)
ते ध्वजं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य समासाद्य पतत्रिणः। ज्वलन्तः कपिमाजघ्नुर्ध्वजाग्रनिलयांश्च तान् ॥०४-५९-७॥
te dhvajaṃ pāṇḍuputrasya samāsādya patatriṇaḥ। jvalantaḥ kapim ājaghnuḥ dhvajāgranilayāṃś ca tān ॥04-59-7॥
[ते (te) - they; ध्वजं (dhvajaṃ) - the banner; पाण्डुपुत्रस्य (pāṇḍuputrasya) - of the son of Pāṇḍu; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; पतत्रिणः (patatriṇaḥ) - the birds; ज्वलन्तः (jvalantaḥ) - blazing; कपिम् (kapim) - the monkey; आजघ्नुḥ (ājaghnuḥ) - struck; ध्वजाग्रनिलयान् (dhvajāgranilayān) - dwelling at the top of the banner; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them;]
(They, having approached the banner of the son of Pāṇḍu, the birds, blazing, struck the monkey and those dwelling at the banner-top.)

ततो भल्लेन महता पृथुधारेण पाण्डवः। छत्रं चिच्छेद भीष्मस्य तूर्णं तदपतद्भुवि ॥०४-५९-८॥
tato bhallena mahatā pṛthudhāreṇa pāṇḍavaḥ। chatraṃ ciccheda bhīṣmasya tūrṇaṃ tadapatad bhuvi॥04-59-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भल्लेन (bhallena) - with an arrow; महता (mahatā) - great; पृथुधारेण (pṛthudhāreṇa) - broad-headed; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; छत्रम् (chatram) - umbrella (parasol); चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut off; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; तत् (tat) - that; अपतत् (apatat) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Then, with a great, broad-headed arrow, the son of Pāṇḍu quickly cut off the umbrella of Bhīṣma; that (umbrella) fell on the ground.)
Then Pāṇḍava, with a great broad-headed arrow, quickly cut off Bhīṣma's umbrella, and it fell to the ground. (04-59-8)
ध्वजं चैवास्य कौन्तेयः शरैरभ्यहनद्दृढम्। शीघ्रकृद्रथवाहांश्च तथोभौ पार्ष्णिसारथी ॥०४-५९-९॥
dhvajaṃ caiva asya kaunteyaḥ śaraiḥ abhyahanad dṛḍham। śīghrakṛt rathavāhān ca tathā ubhau pārṣṇisārathī ॥04-59-9॥
[ध्वजं (dhvajaṃ) - banner (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - his; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अभ्यहनत् (abhyahanad) - struck; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; शीघ्रकृत् (śīghrakṛt) - quick-acting; रथवाहान् (rathavāhān) - chariot-drivers (accusative plural); च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; उभौ (ubhau) - both; पार्ष्णिसारथी (pārṣṇisārathī) - heel-charioteers;]
(The son of Kunti indeed with arrows struck his banner firmly, and the quick-acting chariot-drivers likewise, both the heel-charioteers.)
Kaunteya (the son of Kunti) struck firmly with arrows his banner and, likewise, the quick-acting chariot-drivers, both the heel-charioteers. (04-59-9)
तयोस्तदभवद्युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम्। भीष्मस्य सह पार्थेन बलिवासवयोरिव ॥०४-५९-१०॥
tayostadabhavadyuddhaṃ tumulaṃ lomaharṣaṇam। bhīṣmasya saha pārthena balivāsavayoriva ॥04-59-10॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; तद् (tad) - that; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; तुमुलं (tumulaṃ) - terrible; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; सह (saha) - with; पार्थेन (pārthena) - with Pārtha (Arjuna); बलिवासवयोः (balivāsavayoḥ) - of Bali and Vāsava (Indra); इव (iva) - like;]
(Of those two that became battle terrible hair-raising; of Bhīṣma with Pārtha, like (the battle) of Bali and Vāsava.)
There arose between those two a battle, terrible and hair-raising, between Bhīṣma and Pārtha, like that between Bali and Indra. (04-59-10)
भल्लैर्भल्लाः समागम्य भीष्मपाण्डवयोर्युधि। अन्तरिक्षे व्यराजन्त खद्योताः प्रावृषीव हि ॥०४-५९-११॥
bhallairbhallāḥ samāgamya bhīṣmapāṇḍavayoryudhi। antarikṣe vyārajanta khadyotāḥ prāvṛṣīva hi॥04-59-11॥
[भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - by arrows; भल्लाः (bhallāḥ) - arrows; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having come together; भीष्मपाण्डवयोः (bhīṣmapāṇḍavayoḥ) - of Bhīṣma and the Pāṇḍavas; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; व्यराजन्त (vyārajanta) - shone forth; खद्योताः (khadyotāḥ) - fireflies; प्रावृषीव (prāvṛṣīva) - as in the rainy season; हि (hi) - indeed;]
(By arrows, arrows having come together, of Bhīṣma and the Pāṇḍavas in battle, in the sky shone forth fireflies, as in the rainy season indeed.)
Arrows, having come together in the battle between Bhīṣma and the Pāṇḍavas, shone in the sky like fireflies in the rainy season. (04-59-11)
अग्निचक्रमिवाविद्धं सव्यदक्षिणमस्यतः। गाण्डीवमभवद्राजन्पार्थस्य सृजतः शरान् ॥०४-५९-१२॥
agni-cakram-iva āviddham savya-dakṣiṇam asyataḥ। gāṇḍīvam abhavat rājan pārthasya sṛjataḥ śarān॥04-59-12॥
[अग्निचक्रमिव (agni-cakram-iva) - like a wheel of fire; आविद्धं (āviddham) - whirling; सव्यदक्षिणम् (savya-dakṣiṇam) - left and right; अस्यतः (asyataḥ) - of the one shooting; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - the Gandiva bow; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha (Arjuna); सृजतः (sṛjataḥ) - of (him) releasing; शरान् (śarān) - arrows;]
(Like a wheel of fire, whirling left and right of the one shooting, the Gandiva bow of Partha became, O king, of (him) releasing arrows.)
O king, as Partha released arrows, his Gandiva bow, whirling left and right, looked like a wheel of fire. (04-59-12)
स तैः सञ्छादयामास भीष्मं शरशतैः शितैः। पर्वतं वारिधाराभिश्छादयन्निव तोयदः ॥०४-५९-१३॥
sa taiḥ sañchādayāmāsa bhīṣmaṃ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ। parvataṃ vāridhārābhiśchādayanniva toyadaḥ॥04-59-13॥
[स (sa) - he; तैः (taiḥ) - with those; सञ्छादयामास (sañchādayāmāsa) - covered completely; भीष्मं (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; शरशतैः (śaraśataiḥ) - with hundreds of arrows; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; वारिधाराभिः (vāridhārābhiḥ) - with streams of water; छादयन् (chādayan) - covering; इव (iva) - as if; तोयदः (toyadaḥ) - cloud;]
(He with those covered Bhīṣma with hundreds of sharp arrows, as a cloud covering a mountain with streams of water.)
He then covered Bhīṣma with hundreds of sharp arrows, just as a cloud covers a mountain with streams of water. (04-59-13)
तां स वेलामिवोद्धूतां शरवृष्टिं समुत्थिताम्। व्यधमत्सायकैर्भीष्मो अर्जुनं संनिवारयत् ॥०४-५९-१४॥
tāṃ sa velām ivoddhūtāṃ śaravṛṣṭiṃ samutthitām। vyadhamatsāyakairbhīṣmo arjunaṃ saṃnivārayat॥04-59-14॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; (feminine accusative singular, referring to the shower) स (sa) - he; (referring to Bhīṣma) वेलाम् (velām) - flood; high tide; (accusative singular feminine) इव (iva) - like; as if; उद्धूताम् (uddhūtām) - arisen; tossed up; (accusative singular feminine) शरवृष्टिम् (śaravṛṣṭim) - shower of arrows; समुत्थिताम् (samutthitām) - risen; arisen; sprung up; व्यधमत् (vyadhamat) - he repelled; he warded off; सायकैः (sāyakaiḥ) - with arrows; (instrumental plural) भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; (accusative singular) संनिवारयत् (saṃnivārayat) - was preventing; was restraining;]
(Her, he like a flood arisen, the shower of arrows, sprung up, repelled with arrows Bhīṣma Arjuna was restraining.)
Bhīṣma was restraining Arjuna by repelling that shower of arrows, risen like a surging flood, with his own arrows. (04-59-14)
ततस्तानि निकृत्तानि शरजालानि भागशः। समरेऽभिव्यशीर्यन्त फल्गुनस्य रथं प्रति ॥०४-५९-१५॥
tatastāni nikṛttāni śarajālāni bhāgaśaḥ| samare'bhivyaśīryanta phalgunasya rathaṃ prati ॥04-59-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तानि (tāni) - those; निकृत्तानि (nikṛttāni) - cut off; शरजालानि (śarajālāni) - groups of arrows; भागशः (bhāgaśaḥ) - in portions; समरे (samare) - in battle; अभिव्यशीर्यन्त (abhivyaśīryanta) - were scattered; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Phalguna (Arjuna); रथं (rathaṃ) - chariot; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then those cut-off groups of arrows, in portions, were scattered in battle towards the chariot of Phalguna.)
Then, those severed clusters of arrows were scattered in portions in the battle, towards Arjuna's chariot. (04-59-15)
ततः कनकपुङ्खानां शरवृष्टिं समुत्थिताम्। पाण्डवस्य रथात्तूर्णं शलभानामिवायतिम् ॥ व्यधमत्तां पुनस्तस्य भीष्मः शरशतैः शितैः ॥०४-५९-१६॥
tataḥ kanakapuṁkhānāṃ śaravṛṣṭiṃ samutthitām। pāṇḍavasya rathāttūrṇaṃ śalabhānāmivāyatim ॥ vyadhamattāṃ punastāsya bhīṣmaḥ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ ॥04-59-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कनकपुङ्खानां (kanakapuṁkhānām) - of golden-feathered (arrows); शरवृष्टिं (śaravṛṣṭim) - shower of arrows; समुत्थिताम् (samutthitām) - risen; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the Pāṇḍava; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; तूर्णं (tūrṇam) - quickly; शलभानाम् (śalabhānām) - of moths; इव (iva) - like; आयतिम् (āyatim) - continuously; व्यधमत् (vyadhamat) - dispersed; तां (tām) - that; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तस्य (tasya) - his; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; शरशतैः (śaraśataiḥ) - with hundreds of arrows; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp;]
(Then, the shower of golden-feathered arrows arisen from the chariot of the Pāṇḍava, quickly, like the continuous (flight) of moths, Bhīṣma dispersed again that (shower) of his with sharp hundreds of arrows.)
Then Bhīṣma, with sharp hundreds of arrows, again dispersed that shower of golden-feathered arrows quickly arisen from the chariot of the Pāṇḍava, like the continuous flight of moths. (04-59-16)
ततस्ते कुरवः सर्वे साधु साध्विति चाब्रुवन्। दुष्करं कृतवान्भीष्मो यदर्जुनमयोधयत् ॥०४-५९-१७॥
tataste kuravaḥ sarve sādhu sādhviti cābruvan। duṣkaraṃ kṛtavānbhīṣmo yadarjunamayodhayat ॥04-59-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; साधु (sādhu) - well done; साधु (sādhu) - well done; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they said; दुष्करं (duṣkaraṃ) - difficult to do; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has done; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; यत् (yat) - that; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; अयोधयत् (ayodhayat) - he fought (with);]
(Then they, the Kurus, all (said), "Well done, well done," thus, and they said. Bhīṣma has done (something) difficult to do, that he fought with Arjuna.)
Then all the Kurus said, "Well done, well done," for Bhīṣma has accomplished something difficult, namely, that he fought with Arjuna. (04-59-17)
बलवांस्तरुणो दक्षः क्षिप्रकारी च पाण्डवः। कोऽन्यः समर्थः पार्थस्य वेगं धारयितुं रणे ॥०४-५९-१८॥
balavāṁs taruṇo dakṣaḥ kṣiprakārī ca pāṇḍavaḥ। ko'nyaḥ samarthaḥ pārthasya vegaṁ dhārayituṁ raṇe॥04-59-18॥
[बलवान् (balavān) - strong; तरुणः (taruṇaḥ) - young; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - skilful; क्षिप्रकारी (kṣiprakārī) - quick-acting; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna); कः (kaḥ) - who; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); वेगम् (vegam) - speed; धारयितुम् (dhārayitum) - to withstand; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Strong, young, skilful, quick-acting and the Pāṇḍava; who other is capable of withstanding the speed of Pārtha in battle?)
Arjuna is strong, youthful, skilful and quick to act; who else is capable of withstanding the speed of Pārtha in battle? (04-59-18)
ऋते शान्तनवाद्भीष्मात्कृष्णाद्वा देवकीसुतात्। आचार्यप्रवराद्वापि भारद्वाजान्महाबलात् ॥०४-५९-१९॥
ṛte śāntanavād bhīṣmāt kṛṣṇād vā devakīsutāt। ācāryapravarād vā api bhāradwājān mahābalāt॥04-59-19॥

(With missiles, weapons having warded off, sporting, the two best among men, the eyes of all beings deluding, the two mighty ones.)
The two mighty ones, best among men, sporting and warding off weapons with missiles, bewildered the eyes of all beings. (04-59-20)
प्राजापत्यं तथैवैन्द्रमाग्नेयं च सुदारुणम्। कौबेरं वारुणं चैव याम्यं वायव्यमेव च ॥ प्रयुञ्जानौ महात्मानौ समरे तौ विचेरतुः ॥०४-५९-२१॥
prājāpatyaṃ tathaiva indram āgneyaṃ ca sudāruṇam। kauberaṃ vāruṇaṃ caiva yāmyaṃ vāyavyam eva ca ॥ prayuñjānau mahātmānau samare tau viceratuḥ ॥04-59-21॥

(The weapons of Prajāpati, likewise that of Indra, Agni and the very fierce one; of Kubera, of Varuṇa and indeed of Yama, and of Vāyu too; employing them, the two great-souled ones moved about in battle.)
The two great-souled ones, employing the weapons of Prajāpati, as well as those of Indra, Agni, the very fierce one, Kubera, Varuṇa, Yama, and Vāyu, moved about in battle. (04-59-21)
विस्मितान्यथ भूतानि तौ दृष्ट्वा संयुगे तदा। साधु पार्थ महाबाहो साधु भीष्मेति चाब्रुवन् ॥०४-५९-२२॥
vismitānyatha bhūtāni tau dṛṣṭvā saṃyuge tadā. sādhu pārtha mahābāho sādhu bhīṣmeti cābruvan ॥04-59-22॥
[विस्मितानि (vismitāni) - astonished; amazed; अथ (atha) - then; thereafter; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; creatures; तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in combat; in battle; तदा (tadā) - at that time; साधु (sādhu) - well done; bravo; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; साधु (sādhu) - well done; bravo; भीष्मेति (bhīṣmeti) - ‘O Bhīṣma’; ‘Bhīṣma’ (vocative, with iti: thus called); च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abrūvan) - they spoke; they said;]
(Astonished, then the beings, those two having seen in battle at that time, ‘Well done, O Pārtha, O mighty-armed, well done, O Bhīṣma,’ and they spoke.)
Then, when those two were seen in battle, the beings, astonished, exclaimed at that time, ‘Well done, O Pārtha, O mighty-armed, well done, O Bhīṣma,’ and so they spoke. (04-59-22)
नेदं युक्तं मनुष्येषु योऽयं संदृश्यते महान्। महास्त्राणां सम्प्रयोगः समरे भीष्मपार्थयोः ॥०४-५९-२३॥
nedaṁ yuktaṁ manuṣyeṣu yo'yaṁ sandṛśyate mahān। mahāstrāṇāṁ samprayogaḥ samare bhīṣmapārthayoḥ ॥04-59-23॥

This great employment of mighty weapons in battle between Bhishma and Partha is not proper among men. (04-59-23)
एवं सर्वास्त्रविदुषोरस्त्रयुद्धमवर्तत। अथ जिष्णुरुपावृत्य पृथुधारेण कार्मुकम् ॥ चकर्त भीष्मस्य तदा जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् ॥०४-५९-२४॥
evaṁ sarvāstraviduṣor astrayuddham avartata. atha jiṣṇur upāvṛtya pṛthudhāreṇa kārmukam ॥ cakarta bhīṣmasya tadā jātarūpapariṣkṛtam ॥04-59-24॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; सर्वास्त्रविदुषोः (sarvāstraviduṣoḥ) - of the two who were skilled in all weapons; अस्त्रयुद्धम् (astrayuddham) - fight with weapons; अवर्तत (avartata) - took place; अथ (atha) - then; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - Jiṣṇu (Arjuna); उपावृत्य (upāvṛtya) - having drawn back; पृथुधारेण (pṛthudhāreṇa) - with broad string; कार्मुकम् (kārmukam) - bow; चकर्त (cakarta) - cut off; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; तदा (tadā) - then; जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् (jātarūpapariṣkṛtam) - adorned with pure gold;]
(Thus between the two skilled in all weapons, a fight with weapons took place. Then Jiṣṇu, having drawn back (his) bow with broad string, cut off Bhīṣma’s (bow), which was at that time adorned with pure gold.)
Thus, between the two warriors skilled in all weapons, a battle of missiles took place. Then Jiṣṇu (Arjuna), drawing back his broad-stringed bow, cut off Bhīṣma’s bow, which was adorned with pure gold. (04-59-24)
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण भीष्मोऽन्यत्कार्मुकं रणे। समादाय महाबाहुः सज्यं चक्रे महाबलः ॥ शरांश्च सुबहून्क्रुद्धो मुमोचाशु धनञ्जये ॥०४-५९-२५॥
nimeṣāntaramātreṇa bhīṣmo'nyatkārmukaṃ raṇe. samādāya mahābāhuḥ sajyaṃ cakre mahābalaḥ ॥ śarāṃś ca subahūn kruddho mumocāśu dhanañjaye ॥04-59-25॥

(Within the space of a blink, Bhishma, having taken up another bow in battle, the strong-armed, exceedingly strong, made it strung; and, angry, released very many arrows quickly at Dhananjaya.)
In the blink of an eye, Bhishma, exceedingly strong and mighty-armed, took up another bow in battle, strung it, and, in anger, quickly released a great many arrows at Dhananjaya (Arjuna). (04-59-25)
अर्जुनोऽपि शरांश्चित्रान्भीष्माय निशितान्बहून्। चिक्षेप सुमहातेजास्तथा भीष्मश्च पाण्डवे ॥०४-५९-२६॥
arjuno'pi śarāṃś citrān bhīṣmāya niśitān bahūn। cikṣepa sumahātejās tathā bhīṣmaś ca pāṇḍave ॥04-59-26॥
[अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; (proper noun; अपि (api) - also; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; चित्रान् (citrān) - varied; भीष्माय (bhīṣmāya) - at Bhishma; (dative singular; निशितान् (niśitān) - sharp; बहून् (bahūn) - many; चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - he discharged; सुमहातेजाः (sumahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; (nominative singular; तथा (tathā) - likewise; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवे (pāṇḍave) - at (the son of) Pandu (Arjuna); (locative singular;]
(Arjuna also, many sharp varied arrows at Bhishma discharged, of great splendor; likewise Bhishma at Pandava (Arjuna).)
Arjuna, who was of great splendor, also discharged many sharp and varied arrows at Bhishma; likewise, Bhishma did the same towards Pandava (Arjuna). (04-59-26)
तयोर्दिव्यास्त्रविदुषोरस्यतोरनिशं शरान्। न विशेषस्तदा राजँल्लक्ष्यते स्म महात्मनोः ॥०४-५९-२७॥
tayor divyāstra-viduṣor asyator aniśaṃ śarān। na viśeṣas tadā rājan lakṣyate sma mahātmanoḥ ॥04-59-27॥
[तयोः (tayor) - of those two; दिव्यास्त्रविदुषोः (divyāstra-viduṣoḥ) - knowers of divine weapons; अस्यतोः (asyator) - shooting (arrows); अनिशम् (aniśam) - continuously; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; न (na) - not; विशेषः (viśeṣaḥ) - distinction; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O King; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - was perceived; स्म (sma) - indeed; महात्मनोः (mahātmanoḥ) - of the great souls;]
(Of those two knowers of divine weapons, shooting arrows continuously, no distinction then, O King, was indeed perceived between the great souls.)
O King, at that time, as those two great souls who knew divine weapons continuously shot arrows, no distinction could be perceived between them. (04-59-27)
अथावृणोद्दश दिशः शरैरतिरथस्तदा। किरीटमाली कौन्तेयः शूरः शान्तनवस्तथा ॥०४-५९-२८॥
athāvṛṇod daśa diśaḥ śarair atirathas tadā। kirīṭamālī kaunteyaḥ śūraḥ śāntanavas tathā ॥04-59-28॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आवृणोत् (āvṛṇot) - covered; दश (daśa) - ten; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अति-रथः (atirathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior; तदा (tadā) - at that time; किरीटमाली (kirīṭamālī) - the one with a crown; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; शूरः (śūraḥ) - warrior; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śāntanu; तथा (tathā) - so also;]
(Then covered ten directions with arrows, the great chariot-warrior at that time, the one with a crown, son of Kunti, warrior; son of Śāntanu so also.)
Then, at that time, the great chariot-warrior, the crowned son of Kunti, Arjuna, covered the ten directions with arrows; and so also did the son of Śāntanu, Bhishma. (04-59-28)
अतीव पाण्डवो भीष्मं भीष्मश्चातीव पाण्डवम्। बभूव तस्मिन्सङ्ग्रामे राजँल्लोके तदद्भुतम् ॥०४-५९-२९॥
atīva pāṇḍavo bhīṣmaṁ bhīṣmaścātīva pāṇḍavam। babhūva tasminsaṅgrāme rājanloke tadadbhutam॥04-59-29॥
[अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu (here, Yudhishthira or Arjuna); भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; भीष्मश्च (bhīṣmaś ca) - and Bhīṣma; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the son of Pāṇḍu (here, Arjuna or Yudhishthira); बभूव (babhūva) - became; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - battle; राजन् (rājan) - O king; लोके (loke) - in the world; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful;]
(Exceedingly the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna) (attacked) Bhīṣma, and Bhīṣma exceedingly (attacked) the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna); became in that battle, O king, in the world, that (was) wonderful.)
Arjuna attacked Bhīṣma with extraordinary vigor, and Bhīṣma likewise attacked Arjuna with great force; O king, that scene in that battle was truly wonderful in the world. (04-59-29)
पाण्डवेन हताः शूरा भीष्मस्य रथरक्षिणः। शेरते स्म तदा राजन्कौन्तेयस्याभितो रथम् ॥०४-५९-३०॥
pāṇḍavena hatāḥ śūrā bhīṣmasya ratharakṣiṇaḥ। śerate sma tadā rājan kaunteyasya abhito ratham॥04-59-30॥
[पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by Pāṇḍava (Arjuna); हताः (hatāḥ) - slain; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; रथरक्षिणः (ratharakṣiṇaḥ) - chariot protectors; शेरते (śerate) - lie (down); स्म (sma) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कौन्तेयस्य (kaunteyasya) - of Kunti's son; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - around; रथम् (ratham) - chariot;]
(By Pāṇḍava, slain heroes, of Bhīṣma, the chariot protectors, lie indeed then, O king, of Kunti's son, around the chariot.)
O king, the heroes who protected Bhīṣma's chariot and were slain by Pāṇḍava then lay all around the chariot of the son of Kunti. (04-59-30)
ततो गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्ता निरमित्रं चिकीर्षवः। आगच्छन्पुङ्खसंश्लिष्टाः श्वेतवाहनपत्रिणः ॥०४-५९-३१॥
tato gāṇḍīva-nirmuktā niramitraṃ cikīrṣavaḥ। āgacchan puṅkha-saṃśliṣṭāḥ śveta-vāhana-patriṇaḥ॥04-59-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गाण्डीव-निर्मुक्ताः (gāṇḍīva-nirmuktāḥ) - released from the Gāṇḍīva bow; निरमित्रं (niramitraṃ) - at the enemyless (without enemy); चिकीर्षवः (cikīrṣavaḥ) - desiring to accomplish (to act upon); आगच्छन् (āgacchan) - coming; पुङ्ख-संश्लिष्टाः (puṅkha-saṃśliṣṭāḥ) - whose feathers are joined (fitted); श्वेतवाहन-पत्रिणः (śveta-vāhana-patriṇaḥ) - arrows of the white-horsed (Arjuna);]
(Thereafter, released from the Gāṇḍīva bow, aiming at the enemyless, desiring to accomplish, coming, whose feathers joined, the arrows of the white-horsed.)
Then, the arrows released from the Gāṇḍīva bow, joined with their feathers, aiming at the one without enemies, and wishing to accomplish their purpose, came forth from the quiver of the white-horsed one. (04-59-31)
निष्पतन्तो रथात्तस्य धौता हैरण्यवाससः। आकाशे समदृश्यन्त हंसानामिव पङ्क्तयः ॥०४-५९-३२॥
niṣpatanto rathāt tasya dhautā hairaṇyavāsasaḥ। ākāśe samadṛśyanta haṃsānām iva paṅktayaḥ॥04-59-32॥
[निष्पतन्तः (niṣpatantaḥ) - emerging; going out; leaving; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; तस्य (tasya) - his; धौताः (dhautāḥ) - washed; cleansed; हैरण्यवाससः (hairaṇyavāsasaḥ) - wearing golden garments; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; समदृश्यन्त (samadṛśyanta) - were seen clearly; were distinctly visible; हंसानाम् (haṃsānām) - of swans; इव (iva) - like; as if; पङ्क्तयः (paṅktayaḥ) - rows; series;]
(Emerging from his chariot, cleansed and wearing golden garments, in the sky were clearly seen rows like those of swans.)
The cleansed ones, adorned in golden garments, emerging from his chariot, appeared in the sky like rows of swans. (04-59-32)
तस्य तद्दिव्यमस्त्रं हि प्रगाढं चित्रमस्यतः। प्रेक्षन्ते स्मान्तरिक्षस्थाः सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः ॥०४-५९-३३॥
tasya taddivyam astraṃ hi pragāḍhaṃ citram asyataḥ। prekṣante sma antarikṣasthāḥ sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ ॥04-59-33॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रगाढं (pragāḍham) - deep; चित्रम् (citram) - wonderful; अस्यतः (asyataḥ) - when (he) released; प्रेक्षन्ते (prekṣante) - (they) gazed; स्म (sma) - indeed; अन्तरिक्षस्थाः (antarikṣasthāḥ) - those situated in the sky; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सवासवाः (savāsavāḥ) - together with Indra;]
(Of him, that divine weapon indeed deep and wonderful, when released; gazed indeed those situated in the sky, all the gods together with Indra.)
All the gods together with Indra, who were dwelling in the sky, gazed at that deep and wonderful divine weapon as he released it. (04-59-33)
तद्दृष्ट्वा परमप्रीतो गन्धर्वश्चित्रमद्भुतम्। शशंस देवराजाय चित्रसेनः प्रतापवान् ॥०४-५९-३४॥
taddṛṣṭvā paramaprīto gandharvaś citram adbhutam। śaśaṁsa devarājāya citrasenaḥ pratāpavān॥ 04-59-34॥
[तत् (tad) (tad) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; परमप्रीतः (paramaprītaḥ) (paramaprītaḥ) - extremely gladdened; गन्धर्वः (gandharvaḥ) (gandharvaḥ) - the Gandharva; चित्रम् (citram) (citram) - wonderful; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) (adbhutam) - marvelous; शशंस (śaśaṁsa) (śaśaṁsa) - praised; देवराजाय (devarājāya) (devarājāya) - to the king of gods; चित्रसेनः (citrasenaḥ) (citrasenaḥ) - Citrasena; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) (pratāpavān) - valiant;]
(Having seen that, extremely gladdened the Gandharva wonderful marvelous praised to the king of gods Citrasena valiant.)
Seeing that marvel, the Gandharva Citrasena, greatly gladdened and valiant, praised the wonderful sight to the king of gods. (04-59-34)
पश्येमानरिनिर्दारान्संसक्तानिव गच्छतः। चित्ररूपमिदं जिष्णोर्दिव्यमस्त्रमुदीर्यतः ॥०४-५९-३५॥
paśyemānarinirdārāṁsaṁsaktāniva gacchataḥ। citrarūpamidaṁ jiṣṇordivyamastramudīryataḥ॥04-59-35॥
[पश्येम (paśyema) - let us see; अनरि (anari) - O enemy; निर्दारान् (nirdārān) - torn asunder; संसक्तानिव (saṁsaktān iva) - as if clinging together; गच्छतः (gacchataḥ) - moving; चित्ररूपम् (citrarūpam) - wondrous form; इदं (idaṁ) - this; जिष्णोः (jiṣṇoḥ) - of the victorious one; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; उदीर्यतः (udīryataḥ) - being discharged;]
(Let us see, O enemy, the torn asunder (beings), as if clinging together, moving; this wondrous form of the victorious one’s divine weapon being discharged.)
O enemy, let us see these beings, torn asunder yet appearing to cling together as they move, as the wondrous form of the victorious one's divine weapon is being discharged. (04-59-35)
नेदं मनुष्याः श्रद्दध्युर्न हीदं तेषु विद्यते। पौराणानां महास्त्राणां विचित्रोऽयं समागमः ॥०४-५९-३६॥
nedaṁ manuṣyāḥ śraddadhyur na hīdaṁ teṣu vidyate. paurāṇānāṁ mahāstrāṇāṁ vicitro'yaṁ samāgamaḥ ॥04-59-36॥
[नेदं (na idam) - not this; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - men; humans; श्रद्दध्युः (śraddadhyuḥ) - would believe; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṁ) - this; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; in them; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; पौराणानाम् (paurāṇānām) - of ancient ones; महास्त्राणाम् (mahāstrāṇām) - of great weapons; विचित्रः (vicitraḥ) - wondrous; marvelous; अयम् (ayam) - this; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - conjunction; assembly;]
(Not this men would believe; not indeed this among them exists; of the ancient ones of the great weapons marvelous this conjunction.)
Men would not believe this; indeed, this does not exist among them. This wondrous conjunction of the ancient great weapons (is unique). (04-59-36)
मध्यंदिनगतं सूर्यं प्रतपन्तमिवाम्बरे। न शक्नुवन्ति सैन्यानि पाण्डवं प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ॥०४-५९-३७॥
madhyandina-gataṁ sūryaṁ pratapantam ivāmbare। na śaknuvanti sainyāni pāṇḍavaṁ prativīkṣitum ॥04-59-37॥
[मध्यंदिनगतं (madhyandina-gatam) - having reached midday; सूर्यं (sūryam) - the sun; प्रतपन्तम् (pratapantam) - shining intensely; इव (iva) - like; आम्बरे (āmbare) - in the sky; न (na) - not; शक्नुवन्ति (śaknuvanti) - are able; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - the armies; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the son of Pandu; प्रतिवीक्षितुम् (prativīkṣitum) - to gaze upon;]
(Having reached midday, (the) sun, shining intensely in the sky as if, not are able (the) armies the son of Pandu to gaze upon.)
Just as the midday sun shines intensely in the sky, so the armies are not able to look upon Pandava. (04-59-37)
उभौ विश्रुतकर्माणावुभौ युद्धविशारदौ। उभौ सदृशकर्माणावुभौ युधि दुरासदौ ॥०४-५९-३८॥
ubhau viśrutakarmāṇāv ubhau yuddhaviśāradau। ubhau sadṛśakarmāṇāv ubhau yudhi durāsadau ॥04-59-38॥

इत्युक्तो देवराजस्तु पार्थभीष्मसमागमम्। पूजयामास दिव्येन पुष्पवर्षेण भारत ॥०४-५९-३९॥
ity-ukto devarājas tu pārtha-bhīṣma-samāgamam। pūjayām āsa divyena puṣpavarṣeṇa bhārata ॥04-59-39॥
[इत्युक्तः (ity-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of the gods; तु (tu) - but; पार्थभीष्मसमागमम् (pārtha-bhīṣma-samāgamam) - the meeting of Pārtha (Arjuna) and Bhīṣma; पूजयामास (pūjayām āsa) - honored; दिव्येन (divyena) - with divine; पुष्पवर्षेण (puṣpavarṣeṇa) - with a shower of flowers; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus addressed, the king of the gods but the meeting of Pārtha and Bhīṣma honored with divine with a shower of flowers, O Bhārata.)

ततो भीष्मः शान्तनवो वामे पार्श्वे समर्पयत्। अस्यतः प्रतिसन्धाय विवृतं सव्यसाचिनः ॥०४-५९-४०॥
tato bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo vāme pārśve samarpyat। asyataḥ pratisandhāya vivṛtaṃ savyasācinaḥ ॥04-59-40॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śāntanu; वामे (vāme) - on (the) left; पार्श्वे (pārśve) - side; समर्पयत् (samarpyat) - he placed; अस्यतः (asyataḥ) - while he was shooting; प्रतिसन्धाय (pratisandhāya) - having aimed; विवृतं (vivṛtam) - opened; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Then Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, on the left side placed (it); as he was shooting, having aimed at the opened (part) of Savyasācin (Arjuna).)
Then Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, placed it on the left side while Arjuna (Savyasācin) was shooting, having aimed at his exposed part. (04-59-40)
ततः प्रहस्य बीभत्सुः पृथुधारेण कार्मुकम्। न्यकृन्तद्गार्ध्रपत्रेण भीष्मस्यामिततेजसः ॥०४-५९-४१॥
tataḥ prahasya bībhatsuḥ pṛthudhāreṇa kārmukam। nyakṛntad gārdhrapatreṇa bhīṣmasyāmitatejasaḥ॥04-59-41॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - smiling broadly; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); पृथुधारेण (pṛthudhāreṇa) - with broad-bodied; कार्मुकम् (kārmukam) - bow; न्यकृन्तद् (nyakṛntat) - cut down; गार्ध्रपत्रेण (gārdhrapatreṇa) - by (an arrow) with vulture-feathers; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy;]
(Then, having smiled, Bībhatsu with a broad-bodied bow cut down (it) by (an arrow) with vulture-feathers of Bhīṣma of immeasurable energy.)
Then, smiling, Bībhatsu (Arjuna) cut down Bhīṣma’s broad bow with a vulture-feathered arrow. (04-59-41)
अथैनं दशभिर्बाणैः प्रत्यविध्यत्स्तनान्तरे। यतमानं पराक्रान्तं कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः ॥०४-५९-४२॥
athainaṃ daśabhirbāṇaiḥ pratyavidhyat stanāntare। yatamānaṃ parākrāntaṃ kuntī-putro dhanañjayaḥ ॥04-59-42॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; प्रत्यविध्यत् (pratyavidhyat) - pierced; स्तनान्तरे (stanāntare) - in the region of the chest; यतमानम् (yatamānam) - striving; पराक्रान्तम् (parākrāntam) - valiant; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - son of Kuntī; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya;]
(Then him with ten arrows pierced in the region of the chest, striving, valiant, the son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya.)
Then Dhanañjaya, the son of Kuntī, pierced that valiant and striving one in the region of the chest with ten arrows. (04-59-42)
स पीडितो महाबाहुर्गृहीत्वा रथकूबरम्। गाङ्गेयो युधि दुर्धर्षस्तस्थौ दीर्घमिवातुरः ॥०४-५९-४३॥
sa pīḍito mahābāhur gṛhītvā rathakūbaram. gāṅgeyo yudhi durdharṣas tasthau dīrgham ivāturaḥ ॥04-59-43॥
[स (sa) - he; पीडितः (pīḍitaḥ) - afflicted; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; रथकूबरम् (rathakūbaram) - chariot-yoke; गाङ्गेयः (gāṅgeyaḥ) - the son of the Ganges; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - difficult to conquer; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - for a long (time); इव (iva) - as if; आतुरः (āturaḥ) - ill;]
(He, afflicted, mighty-armed, having taken the chariot-yoke, Gāṅgeya, in battle, difficult to conquer, stood for a long (time) as if ill.)
Though afflicted, the mighty-armed son of the Ganga seized the chariot-yoke, and, hard to conquer in battle, stood for a long time as if he were ill. (04-59-43)
तं विसञ्ज्ञमपोवाह संयन्ता रथवाजिनाम्। उपदेशमनुस्मृत्य रक्षमाणो महारथम् ॥०४-५९-४४॥
taṃ visañjñam apovāha saṃyantā rathavājinām। upadeśam anusmṛtya rakṣamāṇo mahāratham ॥04-59-44॥

(Him unconscious the charioteer of chariot-horses carried away, remembering the instruction, protecting the great chariot-warrior.)
The charioteer of the chariot-horses, remembering the instruction, carried away the unconscious great chariot-warrior, protecting him. (04-59-44)
