आहूयमानस्तु स तेन सङ्ख्ये; महामना धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः। निवर्तितस्तस्य गिराङ्कुशेन; गजो यथा मत्त इवाङ्कुशेन ॥०४-६१-१॥
āhūyamānas tu sa tena saṅkhye; mahāmanā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ. nivartitas tasya girāṅkuśena; gajo yathā matta ivāṅkuśena ॥04-61-1॥
[आहूयमानः (āhūyamānaḥ) - being called; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; तेन (tena) - by him; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in the battle; महामना (mahāmanā) - of great mind; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; निवर्तितः (nivartitaḥ) - was turned back; तस्य (tasya) - by his; गिरा (girā) - by speech; अङ्कुशेन (aṅkuśena) - by the goad; गजः (gajaḥ) - elephant; यथा (yathā) - just as; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - intoxicated; इव (iva) - like; अङ्कुशेन (aṅkuśena) - by the goad;]
(Being called but he by him in the battle, the great-minded son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra was turned back by his speech, by the goad, just as an elephant, intoxicated, is (turned) like by the goad.)
But being called in battle by him, the great-minded son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra was turned back by his command, just as an intoxicated elephant is turned back by the goad. (04-61-1)
सोऽमृष्यमाणो वचसाभिमृष्टो; महारथेनातिरथस्तरस्वी। पर्याववर्ताथ रथेन वीरो; भोगी यथा पादतलाभिमृष्टः ॥०४-६१-२॥
so'mṛṣyamāṇo vacasābhimṛṣṭo; mahārathenātirathastarasvī। paryāvavartātha rathena vīro; bhogī yathā pādatalābhimṛṣṭaḥ ॥04-61-2॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अमृष्यमाणः (amṛṣyamāṇaḥ) - not tolerating; वचसा (vacasā) - by words; अभिमृष्टः (abhimṛṣṭaḥ) - struck; महारथेन (mahārathena) - by the great chariot-warrior; अतिरथः (atirathaḥ) - supreme chariot-warrior; तरस्वी (tarasvī) - energetic; पर्याववर्त (paryāvavarta) - turned back; अथ (atha) - then; रथेन (rathena) - with the chariot; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; भोगी (bhogī) - a serpent; यथा (yathā) - as; पादतलाभिमृष्टः (pādatalābhimṛṣṭaḥ) - touched by the sole of the foot;]
(He, not bearing (it), attacked by words, by the great chariot-warrior, the supreme chariot-warrior, energetic, turned back then with the chariot, the hero, as a serpent touched by the sole of the foot.)
He, unable to tolerate being assailed by the great charioteer's words, that energetic supreme chariot-warrior turned his chariot back then, just like a serpent does when touched by the sole of the foot. (4-61-2)
तं प्रेक्ष्य कर्णः परिवर्तमानं; निवर्त्य संस्तभ्य च विद्धगात्रः। दुर्योधनं दक्षिणतोऽभ्यगच्छ; त्पार्थं नृवीरो युधि हेममाली ॥०४-६१-३॥
taṃ prekṣya karṇaḥ parivartamānaṃ; nivartya sanstabhya ca viddhagātraḥ। duryodhanaṃ dakṣiṇato'bhayagaccha; t-pārthaṃ nṛvīro yudhi hemamālī ॥04-61-3॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; परिवर्तमानं (parivartamānam) - rolling; निवर्त्य (nivartya) - withdrawing; संस्तभ्य (saṃstabhya) - having steadied; च (ca) - and; विद्धगात्रः (viddhagātraḥ) - his limbs having been pierced; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; दक्षिणतः (dakṣiṇataḥ) - to the south; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; पार्थं (pārtham) - Arjuna; नृवीरः (nṛ-vīraḥ) - hero among men; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; हेममाली (hemamālī) - wearing a golden garland;]
(Having seen him (Arjuna) rolling, Karna—withdrawing, steadying himself and his limbs being pierced—approached Duryodhana from the south; the hero among men wearing a golden garland (Karna) approached Partha (Arjuna) in battle.)
Seeing him (Arjuna) rolling about, Karna, wounded in his limbs, withdrew, steadied himself, and approached Duryodhana from the south; then the hero among men, adorned with a golden garland, engaged Arjuna in battle. (4-61-3)
भीष्मस्ततः शान्तनवो निवृत्य; हिरण्यकक्ष्यांस्त्वरयंस्तुरङ्गान्। दुर्योधनं पश्चिमतोऽभ्यरक्ष; त्पार्थान्महाबाहुरधिज्यधन्वा ॥०४-६१-४॥
bhīṣmas tataḥ śāntanavo nivṛtya; hiraṇyakakṣyāṃs tvarayaṃs turaṅgān. duryodhanaṃ paścimato'bhyarakṣat pārthān mahābāhur adhijyadhanvā ॥04-61-4॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; निवृत्य (nivṛtya) - having withdrawn; हिरण्यकक्ष्याः (hiraṇyakakṣyāḥ) - those with golden harness; त्वरयन् (tvarayan) - urging; तुरङ्गान् (turaṅgān) - horses; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; पश्चिमतः (paścimataḥ) - from the west; अभ्यरक्षत् (abhyarakṣat) - protected; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pritha (Pandavas); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; अधिज्यधन्वा (adhijyadhanvā) - with the bow strung (ready for action);]
(Bhishma, then, the son of Shantanu, having withdrawn, urging the horses with golden harness, protected Duryodhana from the west against the sons of Pritha (Pandavas), mighty-armed and with (his) bow strung.)
Then Bhishma, son of Shantanu, withdrew and urged his horses adorned with golden harness, protecting Duryodhana from the west against the Pandavas, with his mighty arms and his bow strung. (04-61-4)
द्रोणः कृपश्चैव विविंशतिश्च; दुःशासनश्चैव निवृत्य शीघ्रम्। सर्वे पुरस्ताद्विततेषुचापा; दुर्योधनार्थं त्वरिताभ्युपेयुः ॥०४-६१-५॥
droṇaḥ kṛpaś caiva viviṁśatiś ca; duḥśāsanaś caiva nivṛtya śīghram. sarve purastād vitateṣucāpā; duryodhanārthaṁ tvaritābhyupeyuḥ ॥04-61-5॥
[द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विविंशतिः (viviṁśatiḥ) - Viviṁśati; च (ca) - and; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; निवृत्य (nivṛtya) - having withdrawn; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - in front; विततेषुचापा (vitateṣu-cāpā) - with bows drawn; दुर्योधनार्थम् (duryodhanārtham) - for Duryodhana; त्वरिता (tvaritāḥ) - swift; अभ्युपेयुः (abhyupeyuḥ) - approached;]
(Droṇa; Kṛpa; and indeed Viviṁśati; and Duḥśāsana; and indeed, having withdrawn quickly, all in front with bows drawn, for Duryodhana, swift, approached.)
Droṇa, Kṛpa, Viviṁśati, and also Duḥśāsana, having quickly withdrawn, all stood in front with their bows drawn, and swiftly approached for the sake of Duryodhana. (04-61-5)
स तान्यनीकानि निवर्तमाना; न्यालोक्य पूर्णौघनिभानि पार्थः। हंसो यथा मेघमिवापतन्तं; धनञ्जयः प्रत्यपतत्तरस्वी ॥०४-६१-६॥
sa tāny anīkāni nivartamānā; nyālokya pūrṇaughanibhāni pārthaḥ. haṃso yathā megham ivāpatantaṃ; dhanañjayaḥ pratyapatattar asvī ॥04-61-6॥
[स (sa) - he; तानि (tāni) - those; अनीकानि (anīkāni) - armies; निवर्तमाना (nivartamānā) - returning; न्यालोक्य (nyālokya) - having seen closely; पूर्णौघनिभानि (pūrṇaughanibhāni) - resembling a full flood; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); हंसः (haṃsaḥ) - swan; यथा (yathā) - as; मेघम् (megham) - cloud; इव (iva) - like; आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - falling; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); प्रत्यपतत्तरस्वी (pratyapatattar asvī) - headed in the opposite direction swiftly;]
(He, having seen those armies returning, resembling a full flood, Pārtha, like a swan at a falling cloud, Dhananjaya turned back swiftly.)
Seeing the armies withdrawing like a full flood, Arjuna (Pārtha), like a swan at an oncoming cloud, Dhananjaya swiftly turned back. (04-61-6)
ते सर्वतः सम्परिवार्य पार्थ; मस्त्राणि दिव्यानि समाददानाः। ववर्षुरभ्येत्य शरैः समन्ता; न्मेघा यथा भूधरमम्बुवेगैः ॥०४-६१-७॥
te sarvataḥ samparivārya pārtha mṛstrāṇi divyāni samādadānāḥ। vavarṣur abhyetya śaraiḥ samantān meghā yathā bhūdharam ambuvegaiḥ॥04-61-7॥
[ते (te) - they; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; सम्परिवार्य (samparivārya) - having completely surrounded; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); मस्त्राणि (mṛstrāṇi) - missiles; (correct form: 'astrāṇi') दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; समाददानाः (samādadānāḥ) - taking up together; ववर्षुः (vavarṣuḥ) - they rained; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; समन्तात् (samantāt) - from all directions; मेघाः (meghāḥ) - clouds; यथा (yathā) - as; भूधरम् (bhūdharam) - mountain; अम्बुवेगैः (ambuvegaiḥ) - with torrents of water;]
(They, from all sides having completely surrounded O son of Pṛthā, taking up divine missiles, rained down, having come near, with arrows from all directions, as clouds [rain] on a mountain with torrents of water.)
They surrounded you on all sides, O son of Pṛthā, and took up divine missiles; then, coming near, they rained arrows upon you from all directions, just as clouds pour torrents of water on a mountain. (04-61-7)
ततोऽस्त्रमस्त्रेण निवार्य तेषां; गाण्डीवधन्वा कुरुपुङ्गवानाम्। संमोहनं शत्रुसहोऽन्यदस्त्रं; प्रादुश्चकारैन्द्रिरपारणीयम् ॥०४-६१-८॥
tato'stram astreṇa nivārya teṣāṃ; gāṇḍīvadhanvā kurupuṅgavānām. saṃmohanaṃ śatrusahonya dastraṃ; prāduścakāraindrirapāraṇīyam ॥04-61-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अस्त्रम् (astram) - missile; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - with a missile; निवार्य (nivārya) - having warded off; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; गाण्डीवधन्वा (gāṇḍīvadhanvā) - the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow; कुरुपुङ्गवानाम् (kurupuṅgavānām) - of the foremost among Kurus; संमोहनम् (saṃmohanam) - stupefying; शत्रुसहः (śatrusahaḥ) - capable against enemies; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; अस्त्रम् (astram) - missile; प्रादुश्चकार (prāduścakāra) - caused to appear; ऐन्द्रिः (aindriḥ) - (he, Arjuna,) the son of Indra; अपारणीयम् (apāraṇīyam) - not to be countered;]
(Thereafter, having warded off the missile with a missile of them, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, of the foremost among Kurus, stupefying, capable against enemies, another missile, caused to appear, he, the son of Indra, not to be countered.)
Then, after warding off their missile with his own, Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow among the chiefs of the Kurus, invoked another missile that confounds enemies—a stupefying, irresistible weapon not to be countered. (04-61-8)
ततो दिशश्चानुदिशो विवृत्य; शरैः सुधारैर्निशितैः सुपुङ्खैः। गाण्डीवघोषेण मनांसि तेषां; महाबलः प्रव्यथयां चकार ॥०४-६१-९॥
tato diśaś cānudiśo vivṛtya; śaraiḥ sudhāraiḥ niśitaiḥ supuṅkhaiḥ. gāṇḍīvaghoṣeṇa manāṃsi teṣāṃ; mahābalaḥ pravyathayāṃ cakāra ॥04-61-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the quarters; च (ca) - and; अनुदिशः (anudiśaḥ) - the intermediate quarters; विवृत्य (vivṛtya) - turning towards; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; सुधारैः (sudhāraiḥ) - very sharp; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - well-sharpened; सुपुङ्खैः (supuṅkhaiḥ) - well-feathered; गाण्डीवघोषेण (gāṇḍīvaghoṣeṇa) - by the sound of (his) Gāṇḍīva; मनांसि (manāṃsi) - minds; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one; प्रव्यथयाम् (pravyathayām) - caused to tremble; चकार (cakāra) - he did;]
(Then, turning to the quarters and intermediate quarters, with arrows very sharp, well-sharpened, well-feathered, by the sound of Gāṇḍīva the mighty one caused the minds of them to tremble.)
Then, turning towards all the quarters and intermediate directions, the mighty one, with very sharp and well-feathered arrows and the sound of the Gāṇḍīva bow, caused their minds to tremble. (04-61-9)
ततः पुनर्भीमरवं प्रगृह्य; दोर्भ्यां महाशङ्खमुदारघोषम्। व्यनादयत्स प्रदिशो दिशः खं; भुवं च पार्थो द्विषतां निहन्ता ॥०४-६१-१०॥
tataḥ punar bhīmaravaṃ pragṛhya; dorbhyāṃ mahāśaṅkham udāraghoṣam. vyanādayat sa pradiśo diśaḥ khaṃ; bhuvaṃ ca pārtho dviṣatāṃ nihantā ॥04-61-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; भीमरवम् (bhīmaravam) - with a terrible sound; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken up; दोर्-भ्यां (dor-bhyām) - with (his) two arms; महाशङ्खम् (mahāśaṅkham) - the great conch; उदारघोषम् (udāraghoṣam) - with mighty, noble sound; वियनादयत् (vyanādayat) - resounded (it), made (it) reverberate; सः (saḥ) - he; प्रदिशः (pradiśaḥ) - the intermediate directions; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the quarters; खम् (kham) - the sky; भुवम् (bhuvam) - the earth; च (ca) - and; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; निहन्ता (nihantā) - the destroyer;]
(Then again, with a terrible sound, having taken up with his two arms the great conch with mighty noble sound, he resounded it, he, the destroyer of the enemies, Pārtha, made the intermediate directions, the quarters, the sky, the earth, and (all) reverberate.)
Then, once more, Pārtha (Arjuna), the destroyer of enemies, having taken up with both arms the great conch with its mighty, noble sound, sounded it so that the quarters, the intermediate directions, the sky, and the earth resounded. (04-61-10)
ते शङ्खनादेन कुरुप्रवीराः; संमोहिताः पार्थसमीरितेन। उत्सृज्य चापानि दुरासदानि; सर्वे तदा शान्तिपरा बभूवुः ॥०४-६१-११॥
te śaṅkhanādena kurupravīrāḥ; saṃmohitāḥ pārthasamīritena। utsṛjya cāpāni durāsadāni; sarve tadā śāntiparā babhūvuḥ ॥04-61-11॥
[ते (te) - they; शङ्खनादेन (śaṅkhanādena) - by the conch-sound; कुरुप्रवीराः (kurupravīrāḥ) - Kuru heroes; संमोहिताः (saṃmohitāḥ) - bewildered; पार्थसमीरितेन (pārthasamīritena) - by the blowing of Pārtha; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; चापानि (cāpāni) - bows; दुरासदानि (durāsadāni) - difficult to approach; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तदा (tadā) - then; शान्तिपराः (śāntiparāḥ) - intent on peace; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became;]
(They by the conch-sound, the Kuru heroes, bewildered by the blowing of Pārtha; having abandoned the bows difficult to approach, all then became intent on peace.)
The Kuru heroes, bewildered by the sound of Pārtha's conch, abandoned their formidable bows; then, all became intent on peace. (04-61-11)
तथा विसञ्ज्ञेषु परेषु पार्थः; स्मृत्वा तु वाक्यानि तथोत्तरायाः। निर्याहि मध्यादिति मत्स्यपुत्र; मुवाच यावत्कुरवो विसञ्ज्ञाः ॥०४-६१-१२॥
tathā visañjñeṣu pareṣu pārthaḥ; smṛtvā tu vākyāni tathottarāyāḥ. niryāhi madhyāditi matsyaputra; uvāca yāvat kuravo visañjñāḥ ॥04-61-12॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; विसञ्ज्ञेषु (visañjñeṣu) - being unconscious; परेषु (pareṣu) - in the others; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - having remembered; तु (tu) - but; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - words; तथोत्तरायाः (tathottarāyāḥ) - of that Uttara (the prince); निर्याहि (niryāhi) - go out; मध्यात् (madhyāt) - from the midst; इति (iti) - thus; मत्स्यपुत्र (matsyaputra) - O son of Matsya (Uttara); उवाच (uvāca) - said; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; विसञ्ज्ञाः (visañjñāḥ) - unconscious; ॥०४-६१-१२॥ (॥04-61-12॥) -;]
(Thus, when the others were unconscious, Pārtha, having remembered the words of that Uttara, said, "Go out from the midst, O son of Matsya," as long as the Kurus were unconscious.)
Thus, while the others were unconscious, Arjuna remembered the words of Uttara and said, "Go out from the midst, O son of Matsya," as long as the Kurus remained unconscious. (04-61-12)
आचार्य शारद्वतयोः सुशुक्ले; कर्णस्य पीतं रुचिरं च वस्त्रम्। द्रौणेश्च राज्ञश्च तथैव नीले; वस्त्रे समादत्स्व नरप्रवीर ॥०४-६१-१३॥
ācārya śāradvatayoḥ suśukle; karṇasya pītaṃ ruciraṃ ca vastram। drauṇeś ca rājñaś ca tathaiva nīle; vastre samādatsva narapravīra ॥04-61-13॥
[आचार्य (ācārya) - preceptor; शारद्वतयोः (śāradvatayoḥ) - of Śāradvat's (i.e., of Kr̥pa and Droṇa); सुशुक्ले (suśukle) - very white (dual); कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; पीतं (pītaṃ) - yellow (singular); रुचिरं (ruciraṃ) - splendid; च (ca) - and; वस्त्रम् (vastram) - cloth; द्रौणेश्च (drauṇeś ca) - and of Drauṇi (Aśvatthāman); राज्ञश्च (rājñaś ca) - and of the king; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; नीले (nīle) - blue (dual); वस्त्रे (vastre) - clothes; समादत्स्व (samādatsva) - do you bestow (imperative); नरप्रवीर (narapravīra) - O best of men;]
(Preceptor Śāradvata's (Kr̥pa and Droṇa) very white; Karṇa's yellow, splendid and cloth; and of Drauṇi and of the king likewise blue clothes; do you bestow, O best of men.)
Bestow the very white cloths for the preceptors Śāradvata (Kr̥pa and Droṇa); the yellow and splendid garment for Karṇa; and also the blue garments for Drauṇi and the king in the same way, O best of men. (04-61-13)
भीष्मस्य सञ्ज्ञां तु तथैव मन्ये; जानाति मेऽस्त्रप्रतिघातमेषः। एतस्य वाहान्कुरु सव्यतस्त्व; मेवं हि यातव्यममूढसञ्ज्ञैः ॥०४-६१-१४॥
bhīṣmasya sañjñāṃ tu tathaiva manye; jānāti me'strapratighātameṣaḥ. etasya vāhān kuru savyatastva; mevaṃ hi yātavyamamūḍhasañjñaiḥ ॥04-61-14॥
[भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; सञ्ज्ञां (sañjñām) - signal; तु (tu) - but; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; मन्ये (manye) - I think; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; मे (me) - my; अस्त्रप्रतिघातम् (astrapratighātam) - missile-counteraction; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; एतस्य (etasya) - of him; वाहान् (vāhān) - vehicles; कुरु (kuru) - conduct; सव्यतः (savyataḥ) - from the left; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; यातव्यम् (yātavyam) - it should be gone; अमूढसञ्ज्ञैः (amūḍhasañjñaiḥ) - by those with unimpaired awareness;]
(Of Bhīṣma signal but just so I think; knows my missile-counteraction this. Of him vehicles conduct from the left you; thus indeed it should be gone by those with unimpaired awareness.)
I think that Bhīṣma’s signal is just so; this one knows the counteraction to my missile. Guide the vehicles of him to the left; thus indeed it should be traversed by those whose awareness is unclouded. (04-61-14)
रश्मीन्समुत्सृज्य ततो महात्मा; रथादवप्लुत्य विराटपुत्रः। वस्त्राण्युपादाय महारथानां; तूर्णं पुनः स्वं रथमारुरोह ॥०४-६१-१५॥

(Having completely released the reins, then the great-souled one, Virata's son, having leapt down from the chariot, having taken the garments of the great chariot-warriors, quickly again ascended his own chariot.)
Then the great-souled Virata's son, having fully released the reins and leapt from his chariot, took the garments of the great warriors and quickly ascended his own chariot again. (04-61-15)
ततोऽन्वशासच्चतुरः सदश्वा; न्पुत्रो विराटस्य हिरण्यकक्ष्यान्। ते तद्व्यतीयुर्ध्वजिनामनीकं; श्वेता वहन्तोऽर्जुनमाजिमध्यात् ॥०४-६१-१६॥
tato'nvaśāsa caturaḥ sadaśvāḥ putro virāṭasya hiraṇyakakṣyān। te tad vyatīyur dhvajinām anīkaṃ śvetā vahanto 'arjunam ājimadhyāt ॥04-61-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्वशासत् (anvaśāsat) - drove after; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; सदश्वाः (sadaśvāḥ) - good horses; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; हिरण्यकक्ष्यान् (hiraṇyakakṣyān) - with golden harness; ते (te) - they; तत् (tat) - that; व्यतीयुः (vyatīyuḥ) - passed through; ध्वजिनाम् (dhvajinām) - of the armed forces; अनीकं (anīkaṃ) - array; श्वेताः (śvetāḥ) - white; वहन्तः (vahantaḥ) - carrying; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; आजिमध्यात् (ājimadhyāt) - from the midst of the battle;]
(Then the son of Virāṭa drove after with four good horses with golden harness. They, white (horses), carrying Arjuna, passed through that array of the armed forces from the midst of the battle.)
Then the son of Virāṭa, harnessing four white horses adorned with golden trappings, followed, and they carried Arjuna out from the midst of the battle, passing through the array of warriors. (04-61-16)
तथा तु यान्तं पुरुषप्रवीरं; भीष्मः शरैरभ्यहनत्तरस्वी। स चापि भीष्मस्य हयान्निहत्य; विव्याध पार्श्वे दशभिः पृषत्कैः ॥०४-६१-१७॥
tathā tu yāntaṃ puruṣa-pravīraṃ; bhīṣmaḥ śarair abhyahan tarasvī। sa cāpi bhīṣmasya hayān nihatya; vivyādha pārśve daśabhiḥ pṛṣatkaiḥ॥04-61-17॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; यान्तं (yāntam) - going; पुरुषप्रवीरं (puruṣa-pravīram) - the most excellent among men; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अभ्यहत् (abhyahat) - struck; तरस्वी (tarasvī) - the energetic; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; हयान् (hayān) - horses; निहत्य (nihatya) - killing; विव्याध (vivyādha) - pierced; पार्श्वे (pārśve) - in the side; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; पृषत्कैः (pṛṣatkaiḥ) - sharp arrows;]
(Thus but going the most excellent among men, Bhīṣma with arrows struck (him), energetic. He also, of Bhīṣma horses killing, pierced in the side with ten sharp arrows.)
But thus, as the foremost among men was advancing, the energetic Bhīṣma struck him with arrows. And he, having slain Bhīṣma’s horses, pierced Bhīṣma in the side with ten sharp arrows. (04-61-17)
ततोऽर्जुनो भीष्ममपास्य युद्धे; विद्ध्वास्य यन्तारमरिष्टधन्वा। तस्थौ विमुक्तो रथवृन्दमध्या; द्राहुं विदार्येव सहस्ररश्मिः ॥०४-६१-१८॥
tato'ṛjuno bhīṣmam apāsya yuddhe; viddhvāsya yantāram ariṣṭadhanvā. tasthau vimukto rathavṛndamadhyā; drāhuṃ vidāryeva sahasraraśmiḥ ॥04-61-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhiṣma; अपास्य (apāsya) - having set aside; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; विद्ध्वा (viddhvā) - having pierced; अस्य (asya) - his; यन्तारम् (yantāram) - charioteer; अरिष्टधन्वा (ariṣṭadhanvā) - the one with unfailing bow; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - liberated; रथवृन्दमध्या (rathavṛndamadhyā) - amidst the group of chariots; द्राहुम् (drāhum) - the demon Rāhu; विदार्य (vidārya) - having cleft; इव (iva) - as if; सहस्ररश्मिः (sahasraraśmiḥ) - the thousand-rayed (sun);]
(Then Arjuna, having set aside Bhiṣma in battle, having pierced his charioteer, the one with unfailing bow, stood liberated amidst the group of chariots, as the thousand-rayed (sun) cleaving Rāhu.)
Then Arjuna, after having left Bhiṣma aside in battle and having pierced his charioteer—he of the unfailing bow—stood free amidst the array of chariots, like the thousand-rayed sun cleaving Rāhu. (4-61-18)
लब्ध्वा तु सञ्ज्ञां च कुरुप्रवीरः; पार्थं समीक्ष्याथ महेन्द्रकल्पम्। रणाद्विमुक्तं स्थितमेकमाजौ; स धार्तराष्ट्रस्त्वरितो बभाषे ॥०४-६१-१९॥
labdhvā tu sañjñāṃ ca kurupravīraḥ; pārthaṃ samīkṣyātha mahendrakalpam. raṇādvimuktaṃ sthitamekamājau; sa dhārtarāṣṭrastvarito babhāṣe ॥04-61-19॥
[लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; तु (tu) - but; सञ्ज्ञां (sañjñām) - consciousness; च (ca) - and; कुरुप्रवीरः (kurupravīraḥ) - the mighty Kuru; पार्थं (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having observed; अथ (atha) - then; महेन्द्रकल्पम् (mahendrakalpam) - equal to Mahendra (Indra); रणात् (raṇāt) - from battle; विमुक्तं (vimuktam) - separated; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; एकम् (ekam) - alone; आजौ (ājau) - on the battlefield; स (sa) - he; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhritarashtra; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; बभाषे (babhāṣe) - spoke;]
(Having obtained consciousness but and the mighty Kuru, having observed Pārtha then (who was) equal to Indra, separated from battle, standing alone on the battlefield, he, the son of Dhritarashtra, quickly spoke.)
But having regained consciousness, the mighty Kuru, seeing Pārtha—equal to Indra—standing alone, separated from the battle on the field, the son of Dhritarashtra quickly spoke. (04-61-19)
अयं कथं स्विद्भवतां विमुक्त; स्तं वै प्रबध्नीत यथा न मुच्येत्। तमब्रवीच्छान्तनवः प्रहस्य; क्व ते गता बुद्धिरभूत्क्व वीर्यम् ॥०४-६१-२०॥
ayaṃ kathaṃ svid bhavatāṃ vimuktaḥ; taṃ vai prabadhnīta yathā na mucyeta. tam abravīc chāntanavaḥ prahasya; kva te gatā buddhir abhūt kva vīryam ॥04-61-20॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this one; कथम् (katham) - how; स्वित् (svid) - indeed; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you (plural); विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - released; स्तम् (tam) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रबध्नीत (prabadhnīta) - should bind; यथा (yathā) - so that; न (na) - not; मुच्येत् (mucyeta) - would be released; तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - the son of Śantanu; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - smiling; क्व (kva) - where; ते (te) - your; गता (gatā) - has gone; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; अभूत् (abhūt) - has become; क्व (kva) - where; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength;]
(This one—how indeed of you (all) was released? Him indeed should (you all) bind so that he might not be released. To him said the son of Śantanu, smiling: "Where has your intellect gone, where your strength has become?" (04-61-20))
How indeed was this one released by you? You should bind him in such a way that he cannot escape. To him, the son of Śantanu, smiling, said: "Where has your intellect gone, and where is your strength?" (04-61-20)
शान्तिं पराश्वस्य यथा स्थितोऽभू; रुत्सृज्य बाणांश्च धनुश्च चित्रम्। न त्वेव बीभत्सुरलं नृशंसं; कर्तुं न पापेऽस्य मनो निविष्टम् ॥०४-६१-२१॥
śāntiṃ parāśvasya yathā sthito'bhū; utsṛjya bāṇāṃśca dhanuśca citram। na tveva bībhatsuralaṃ nṛśaṃsaṃ; kartuṃ na pāpe'sya mano niviṣṭam ॥04-61-21॥
[शान्तिं (śāntiṃ) - peace; पराश्वस्य (parāśvasya) - of the enemy's horse; यथा (yathā) - as; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; अभूत् (abhūt) - he became; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having cast aside; बाणान् (bāṇān) - arrows; च (ca) - and; धनुश्च (dhanuśca) - and the bow; चित्रम् (citram) - variegated; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एव (eva) - indeed; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); अलं (alaṃ) - fit; नृशंसं (nṛśaṃsaṃ) - cruel; कर्तुम् (kartuṃ) - to do; न (na) - not; पापे (pāpe) - in sin; अस्य (asya) - his; मनो (mano) - mind; निविष्टम् (niviṣṭam) - entered;]
(Peace of the enemy's horse as standing he became; having cast aside arrows and the variegated bow. Not, indeed, Bībhatsu fit cruel to do; not in sin his mind entered.)
He became as one at peace with the enemy's horse, having cast aside his arrows and variegated bow. Yet Bībhatsu was not fit to do a cruel deed; his mind was not set on sin. (04-61-21)
त्रैलोक्यहेतोर्न जहेत्स्वधर्मं; तस्मान्न सर्वे निहता रणेऽस्मिन्। क्षिप्रं कुरून्याहि कुरुप्रवीर; विजित्य गाश्च प्रतियातु पार्थः ॥०४-६१-२२॥
trailokyahetor na jahetsvadharmaṃ; tasmān na sarve nihatā raṇe'smin. kṣipraṃ kurūn yāhi kurupravīra; vijitya gāś ca pratiyātu pārthaḥ ॥04-61-22॥
[त्रैलोक्य-हेतोः (trailokya-hetor) - for the sake of the three worlds; of the cause of the three worlds; न (na) - not; जहेत् (jahet) - should abandon; स्वधर्मं (svadharmaṃ) - one's own duty; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; सर्वे (sarve) - all; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - killed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; अस्मिन (asmin) - in this; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; याहि (yāhi) - go; कुरु-प्रवीर (kuru-pravīra) - O chief of the Kurus; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; प्रतियातु (pratiyātu) - let him return; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna);]
(Not for the sake of the three worlds should one abandon one's own duty; therefore not all are killed in this battle. Quickly, O chief of the Kurus, go to the Kurus; having conquered, let Pārtha return with the cows.)
One should not abandon one's own duty even for the sake of the three worlds; therefore, not all are destroyed in this battle. So, O chief of the Kurus, proceed swiftly against the Kurus; let Arjuna recover the cows by victory and return. (04-61-22)
दुर्योधनस्तस्य तु तन्निशम्य; पितामहस्यात्महितं वचोऽथ। अतीतकामो युधि सोऽत्यमर्षी; राजा विनिःश्वस्य बभूव तूष्णीम् ॥०४-६१-२३॥
duryodhanas tasya tu tan niśamya; pitāmahasyātmahitaṃ vaco 'tha. atītakāmo yudhi so 'tyamarṣī; rājā viniḥśvasya babhūva tūṣṇīm ॥04-61-23॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तस्य (tasya) - his; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of grandfather; आत्महितम् (ātma-hitam) - for his own good; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; अथ (atha) - then; अतीतकामः (atīta-kāmaḥ) - whose desires had passed; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; सः (saḥ) - he; अत्य­मर्षी (aty-amarṣī) - very intolerant; राजा (rājā) - the king; विनिःश्वस्य (viniḥśvasya) - having sighed deeply; बभूव (babhūva) - became; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent;]
(Duryodhana, but his, that, having heard, of grandfather, for his own good, words, then, whose desires had passed, in battle, he, very intolerant, the king, having sighed deeply, became, silent.)
But Duryodhana, having heard those words of his grandfather spoken for his (Duryodhana's) own good, being one whose desires had passed, very intolerant in battle, the king sighed deeply and became silent. (04-61-23)
तद्भीष्मवाक्यं हितमीक्ष्य सर्वे; धनञ्जयाग्निं च विवर्धमानम्। निवर्तनायैव मनो निदध्यु; र्दुर्योधनं ते परिरक्षमाणाः ॥०४-६१-२४॥
tad bhīṣmavākyaṃ hitam īkṣya sarve; dhanañjayāgniṃ ca vivardhamānam। nivartanāyaiva mano nidadhyur duryodhanaṃ te parirakṣamāṇāḥ ॥04-61-24॥
[तत् (tat) - that; भीष्म-वाक्यम् (bhīṣma-vākyam) - Bhīṣma's speech; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; ईक्ष्य (īkṣya) - having considered; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धनञ्जय-अग्निम् (dhanañjaya-agnim) - Arjuna-fire; च (ca) - and; विवर्धमानम् (vivardhamānam) - growing; निवर्तनाय एव (nivartanāya eva) - for turning back indeed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; निदध्युः (nidadhyuḥ) - set; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; ते (te) - they; परिरक्षमाणाः (parirakṣamāṇāḥ) - protecting;]
(That Bhīṣma's speech beneficial having considered all; Arjuna-fire and growing; for turning back indeed mind they set Duryodhana protecting.)
Having considered that beneficial speech of Bhīṣma, all of them, seeing the growing fire of Arjuna, set their minds towards retreat, protecting Duryodhana. (04-61-24)
तान्प्रस्थितान्प्रीतमनाः स पार्थो; धनञ्जयः प्रेक्ष्य कुरुप्रवीरान्। आभाषमाणोऽनुययौ मुहूर्तं; सम्पूजयंस्तत्र गुरून्महात्मा ॥०४-६१-२५॥
tān prasthitān prītamanāḥ sa pārtho; dhanañjayaḥ prekṣya kuru-pravīrān. ābhāṣamāṇo'nuyayau muhūrtam; sampūjayaṁs tatra gurūn mahātmā ॥04-61-25॥
[तान् (tān) - them; प्रस्थितान् (prasthitān) - departed (those who have set out); प्रीतमनाः (prītamanāḥ) - with pleased mind; स (sa) - he; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; कुरुप्रवीरान् (kuru-pravīrān) - Kuru heroes; आभाषमाणः (ābhāṣamāṇaḥ) - speaking (addressing); अनुययौ (anuyayau) - followed; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; सम्पूजयन् (sampūjayan) - honoring; तत्र (tatra) - there; गुरून् (gurūn) - elders; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled (one);]
(Them departed, with a pleased mind, he Pārtha (Arjuna), Dhanañjaya, having seen the Kuru heroes, speaking, followed for a moment, honoring there the elders, the great-souled one.)
With a pleased mind, Pārtha (Arjuna), also called Dhanañjaya, saw the Kuru heroes as they departed. Speaking to them, the great-souled hero followed for a moment, honoring the elders present there. (04-61-25)
पितामहं शान्तनवं स वृद्धं; द्रोणं गुरुं च प्रतिपूज्य मूर्ध्ना। द्रौणिं कृपं चैव गुरूंश्च सर्वा; ञ्शरैर्विचित्रैरभिवाद्य चैव ॥०४-६१-२६॥
pitāmahaṁ śāntanavaṁ sa vṛddhaṁ; droṇaṁ guruṁ ca pratipūjya mūrdhnā. drauṇiṁ kṛpaṁ caiva gurūṁś ca sarvān; śarair vicitrair abhivādya caiva ॥04-61-26॥

दुर्योधनस्योत्तमरत्नचित्रं; चिच्छेद पार्थो मुकुटं शरेण। आमन्त्र्य वीरांश्च तथैव मान्या; न्गाण्डीवघोषेण विनाद्य लोकान् ॥०४-६१-२७॥
duryodhanasyottamaratnacitraṃ; ciccheda pārtho mukuṭaṃ śareṇa. āmantrya vīrāṃś ca tathaiva mānyān; gaṇḍīvaghoṣeṇa vinādya lokān ॥04-61-27॥

(Of Duryodhana, adorned with excellent jewels, Pārtha cut off the crown with an arrow; having addressed the heroes and in the same manner the honorable ones, with the sound of Gandiva, having resounded the worlds.)
Pārtha (Arjuna) cut off Duryodhana's jewel-studded crown with an arrow; after addressing the heroes and other honorable ones, he resounded through the worlds with the echo of Gandiva. (04-61-27)
स देवदत्तं सहसा विनाद्य; विदार्य वीरो द्विषतां मनांसि। ध्वजेन सर्वानभिभूय शत्रू; न्स हेमजालेन विराजमानः ॥०४-६१-२८॥
sa devadattaṃ sahasā vinādya; vidārya vīro dviṣatāṃ manāṃsi. dhvajena sarvān abhibhūya śatrūn sa hemajālena virājamānaḥ ॥04-61-28॥

(He, having suddenly caused Devadatta to sound out; having pierced the minds of the enemies, the hero, having subdued all the enemies with his banner, shining with a golden network.)
He, having suddenly made Devadatta neigh, heroically pierced the minds of the enemies, and, overcoming all the foes with his banner, shone brightly adorned with a golden network. (04-61-28)
दृष्ट्वा प्रयातांस्तु कुरून्किरीटी; हृष्टोऽब्रवीत्तत्र स मत्स्यपुत्रम्। आवर्तयाश्वान्पशवो जितास्ते; याताः परे याहि पुरं प्रहृष्टः ॥०४-६१-२९॥
dṛṣṭvā prayātāṃs tu kurūn kirīṭī; hṛṣṭo 'bravīt tatra sa matsya-putram. āvartayāśvān paśavo jitās te; yātāḥ pare yāhi puraṃ prahṛṣṭaḥ ॥04-61-29॥

(Having seen the departed Kurus, the one with the diadem, delighted, spoke there to the son of Matsya: "Turn the horses! The cattle are won by you; the others have gone. Go to the city joyful." (04-61-29))
