जित्वा त्रिगर्तान्सङ्ग्रामे गाश्चैवादाय केवलाः। अशोभत महाराजः सह पार्थैः श्रिया वृतः ॥०४-६३-२॥
jitvā trigartān saṅgrāme gāś caiva ādāya kevalāḥ। aśobhata mahārājaḥ saha pārthaiḥ śriyā vṛtaḥ॥04-63-2॥

तमासनगतं वीरं सुहृदां प्रीतिवर्धनम्। उपतस्थुः प्रकृतयः समस्ता ब्राह्मणैः सह ॥०४-६३-३॥
tam-āsanagataṁ vīraṁ suhṛdāṁ prītivardhanam। upatasthuḥ prakṛtayaḥ samastā brāhmaṇaiḥ saha ॥04-63-3॥

(Him, seated, the hero, increaser of the affection of friends, approached (by) all citizens together with Brāhmaṇas.)
All the citizens, together with the Brāhmaṇas, approached him, the hero, who was seated and who increases the affection of friends. (04-63-3)
सभाजितः ससैन्यस्तु प्रतिनन्द्याथ मत्स्यराट्। विसर्जयामास तदा द्विजांश्च प्रकृतीस्तथा ॥०४-६३-४॥
sabhājitaḥ sasainyas-tu pratinandyātha matsyarāṭ। visarjayāmāsa tadā dvijāṁś-ca prakṛtīs-tathā ॥04-63-4॥

Having honored and greeted (them), the king of Matsya, together with his army, then sent away the twice-born and the citizens as well. (04-63-4)
ततः स राजा मत्स्यानां विराटो वाहिनीपतिः। उत्तरं परिपप्रच्छ क्व यात इति चाब्रवीत् ॥०४-६३-५॥
tataḥ sa rājā matsyānāṃ virāṭo vāhinīpatiḥ। uttaraṃ paripapraccha kva yāta iti cābravīt ॥04-63-5॥

(Then he king of the Matsyas, Virāṭa lord of the army, asked Uttara, 'Where gone?' — and thus spoke also.)

आचख्युस्तस्य संहृष्टाः स्त्रियः कन्याश्च वेश्मनि। अन्तःपुरचराश्चैव कुरुभिर्गोधनं हृतम् ॥०४-६३-६॥
ācakhyus tasya saṁhṛṣṭāḥ striyaḥ kanyāś ca veśmani। antaḥpuracarāś caiva kurubhir godhanaṁ hṛtam॥04-63-6॥

विजेतुमभिसंरब्ध एक एवातिसाहसात्। बृहन्नडासहायश्च निर्यातः पृथिवीञ्जयः ॥०४-६३-७॥
vijetumabhi-saṁrabdha eka eva ati-sāhasāt। bṛhannadā-sahāyaś ca niryātaḥ pṛthivīñjayaḥ ॥04-63-7॥

(To conquer, intensely motivated, alone, indeed, from great daring, with Bṛhannadā as companion, and set forth, the conqueror of the earth.)
Motivated to conquer, alone and indeed with great daring, accompanied only by Bṛhannadā, the conqueror of the earth set out. (4-63-7)
उपयातानतिरथान्द्रोणं शान्तनवं कृपम्। कर्णं दुर्योधनं चैव द्रोणपुत्रं च षड्रथान् ॥०४-६३-८॥
upayātān atirathān droṇaṃ śāntanavaṃ kṛpam | karṇaṃ duryodhanaṃ caiva droṇaputraṃ ca ṣaḍrathān ॥04-63-8॥

(Having approached the great chariot-warriors Droṇa, the son of Śāntanu, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Duryodhana, and indeed the son of Droṇa, and six charioteers.)
He approached the six great chariot-warriors—Droṇa, Bhīṣma (the son of Śāntanu), Kṛpa, Karṇa, Duryodhana, and the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman). (04-63-8)
राजा विराटोऽथ भृशं प्रतप्तः; श्रुत्वा सुतं ह्येकरथेन यातम्। बृहन्नडासारथिमाजिवर्धनं; प्रोवाच सर्वानथ मन्त्रिमुख्यान् ॥०४-६३-९॥
rājā virāṭo'tha bhṛśaṃ prataptaḥ; śrutvā sutaṃ hy ekarathena yātam. bṛhannadā-sārathim ājivardhanaṃ; provāca sarvān atha mantrimukhyān ॥04-63-9॥
[राजा (rājā) - king; विराटः (virāṭaḥ) - Virata; अथ (atha) - then; भृशं (bhṛśam) - greatly; प्रतप्तः (prataptaḥ) - distressed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सुतं (sutaṃ) - son; हि (hi) - indeed; एकरथेन (ekarathena) - by a single chariot; यातम् (yātam) - gone; बृहन्नडा-सारथिम् (bṛhannadā-sārathim) - with Brihannadā as charioteer; आ-जिवर्धनं (ā-jivardhanam) - Ajivardhana; प्रोवाच (provāca) - he spoke; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अथ (atha) - then; मन्त्रीमुख्यान् (mantrimukhyān) - chief ministers;]
(King Virata then, greatly distressed, having heard (that his) son indeed had gone in a single chariot, with Brihannadā as charioteer, Ajivardhana, he spoke to all then chief ministers.)
King Virata, greatly distressed, upon hearing that his son had gone forth in a single chariot with Brihannadā as his charioteer and Ajivardhana, addressed all his chief ministers. (04-63-9)
सर्वथा कुरवस्ते हि ये चान्ये वसुधाधिपाः। त्रिगर्तान्निर्जिताञ्श्रुत्वा न स्थास्यन्ति कदाचन ॥०४-६३-१०॥
sarvathā kuravas te hi ye ca anye vasudhādhipāḥ। trigartān nirjitān śrutvā na sthāsyanti kadācana॥04-63-10॥
[सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; वसुधाधिपाः (vasudhādhipāḥ) - lords of the earth; त्रिगर्तान् (trigartān) - the Trigartas; निर्जितान् (nirjitān) - conquered; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; न (na) - not; स्थास्यन्ति (sthāsyanti) - will remain; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time;]
(In every way, the Kurus, they indeed, who and other lords of the earth, having heard that the Trigartas are conquered, will not remain at any time.)
Certainly, the Kurus and the other lords of the earth, having heard that the Trigartas have been conquered, will never remain (steady). (04-63-10)
तस्माद्गच्छन्तु मे योधा बलेन महता वृताः। उत्तरस्य परीप्सार्थं ये त्रिगर्तैरविक्षताः ॥०४-६३-११॥
tasmād gacchantu me yodhā balena mahatā vṛtāḥ। uttarasya parīpsārthaṃ ye trigartair avikṣatāḥ॥04-63-11॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; गच्छन्तु (gacchantu) - let (them) go; मे (me) - my; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; बलेन (balena) - with force; महताः (mahatā) - great; वृताः (vṛtāḥ) - arrayed (or accompanied); उत्तरस्य (uttarasya) - of the north; परीप्सार्थम् (parīpsārtham) - for the purpose of seeking (to obtain/secure); ये (ye) - who; त्रिगर्तैः (trigartaiḥ) - by the Trigartas; अविक्षताः (avikṣatāḥ) - not hurt;]
(Therefore let my warriors, arrayed with great force, go, for the sake of securing the north, those who are not wounded by the Trigartas.)
Therefore, let my warriors, accompanied by great force, proceed northward to achieve the objective, namely those who have not been wounded by the Trigartas. (04-63-11)
हयांश्च नागांश्च रथांश्च शीघ्रं; पदातिसङ्घांश्च ततः प्रवीरान्। प्रस्थापयामास सुतस्य हेतो; र्विचित्रशस्त्राभरणोपपन्नान् ॥०४-६३-१२॥
hayāṁś ca nāgāṁś ca rathāṁś ca śīghraṁ; padātisaṅghāṁś ca tataḥ pravīrān। prasthāpayāmāsa sutasya hetoḥ; vicitraśastrābharaṇopapannān ॥04-63-12॥
[हयान् (hayān) - horses; च (ca) - and; नगान् (nāgān) - elephants; च (ca) - and; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; च (ca) - and; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; पदातिसङ्घान् (padātisaṅghān) - infantry-troops; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रवीरान् (pravīrān) - heroic; प्रस्थापयामास (prasthāpayāmāsa) - (he) sent (forth); सुतस्य (sutasya) - of (his) son; हेतोः (hetoḥ) - for the sake (of); विचित्रशस्त्राभरणोपपन्नान् (vicitraśastrābharaṇopapannān) - endowed with various weapons and ornaments;]
(Horses and elephants and chariots quickly, infantry-troops and then heroic (men), he sent forth for the sake of his son, endowed with various weapons and ornaments.)
He quickly sent forth horses, elephants, chariots, and infantry-troops, all heroic and endowed with various weapons and ornaments, for his son's sake. (04-63-12)
एवं स राजा मत्स्यानां विराटोऽक्षौहिणीपतिः। व्यादिदेशाथ तां क्षिप्रं वाहिनीं चतुरङ्गिणीम् ॥०४-६३-१३॥
evaṃ sa rājā matsyānāṃ virāṭo'kṣauhiṇīpatiḥ। vyādideśātha tāṃ kṣipraṃ vāhinīṃ caturaṅgiṇīm ॥04-63-13॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; मत्स्यानां (matsyānāṃ) - of the Matsyas; विराटः (virāṭaḥ) - Virata (proper name); अक्षौहिणीपतिः (akṣauhiṇīpatiḥ) - lord of an army (division); व्यादिदेश (vyādideśa) - ordered; अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - that; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - army; चतुरङ्गिणीम् (caturaṅgiṇīm) - consisting of four parts;]
(Thus he king of the Matsyas Virata, lord of the division, then ordered that army quickly, consisting of four parts.)
Thus, Virata, the king of the Matsyas and lord of the army, then quickly ordered that fourfold army. (04-63-13)
कुमारमाशु जानीत यदि जीवति वा न वा। यस्य यन्ता गतः षण्ढो मन्येऽहं न स जीवति ॥०४-६३-१४॥
kumāram āśu jānīta yadi jīvati vā na vā। yasya yantā gataḥ ṣaṇḍhaḥ manye'haṃ na sa jīvati ॥04-63-14॥
[कुमारम् (kumāram) - the prince; आशु (āśu) - quickly; जानीत (jānīta) - (you) should know; यदि (yadi) - if; जीवति (jīvati) - he lives; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or; यस्यान्ता (yasya yantā) - whose controller; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; षण्ढः (ṣaṇḍhaḥ) - a eunuch; मन्ये (manye) - I believe; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; जीवति (jīvati) - lives;]
(The prince quickly should know if he lives or not. He whose controller has gone is a eunuch, I believe, he does not live.)
Quickly find out whether the prince is alive or not. For I believe that one whose protector is gone—a eunuch—does not truly live. (04-63-14)
तमब्रवीद्धर्मराजः प्रहस्य; विराटमार्तं कुरुभिः प्रतप्तम्। बृहन्नडा सारथिश्चेन्नरेन्द्र; परे न नेष्यन्ति तवाद्य गास्ताः ॥०४-६३-१५॥
tam abravīd dharmarājaḥ prahasya; virāṭam ārtam kurubhiḥ prataptam। bṛhannadā sārathiś ca, nṛpendra; pare na neṣyanti tava adya gāḥ tāḥ॥04-63-15॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीद् (abravīt) - (he) said; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virāṭa; आर्तम् (ārtam) - distressed; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kurus; प्रतप्तम् (prataptam) - tormented; बृहन्नडा (bṛhannadā) - Bṛhannadā; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer; च (ca) - and; नरेन्द्र (nṛindra) - O king; परे (pare) - enemies; न (na) - not; नेष्यन्ति (neṣyanti) - will lead/drive; तव (tava) - your; आद्य (adya) - today; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; ताः (tāḥ) - those;]
(To him Dharmarāja, having smiled, said; Virāṭa distressed, tormented by the Kurus. Bṛhannadā, the charioteer, and O king; the enemies will not today lead your cows, those.)
Dharmarāja, smiling, said to him: "O king, though Virāṭa is distressed and tormented by the Kurus, with Bṛhannadā as his charioteer, the enemies will not take away your cows today." (04-63-15)
सर्वान्महीपान्सहितान्कुरूंश्च; तथैव देवासुरयक्षनागान्। अलं विजेतुं समरे सुतस्ते; स्वनुष्ठितः सारथिना हि तेन ॥०४-६३-१६॥
sarvān mahīpān sahitān kurūṁś ca; tathaiva deva-asura-yakṣa-nāgān. alaṁ vijetuṁ samare sutas te; svanuṣṭhitaḥ sārathinā hi tena ॥04-63-16॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; महीपान् (mahīpān) - kings; सहितान् (sahitān) - together with; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; देव-असुर-यक्ष-नागान् (deva-asura-yakṣa-nāgān) - gods, asuras, yakṣas, nāgas; अलम् (alam) - capable; विजेतुम् (vijetum) - to conquer; समरे (samare) - in battle; सुतः (sutaḥ) - your son; ते (te) - your; स्वनुष्ठितः (svanuṣṭhitaḥ) - appointed; सारथिना (sārathinā) - by the charioteer; हि (hi) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him;]
(All the kings together with the Kurus and likewise gods, asuras, yakṣas, nāgas—capable of being conquered in battle by your son, who has indeed been appointed by the charioteer by him.)
All the kings together with the Kurus, as well as the gods, asuras, yakṣas and nāgas, can be conquered in battle by your son, for he has indeed been positioned by that charioteer. (04-63-16)
अथोत्तरेण प्रहिता दूतास्ते शीघ्रगामिनः। विराटनगरं प्राप्य जयमावेदयंस्तदा ॥०४-६३-१७॥
athottareṇa prahitā dūtās te śīghragāminaḥ। virāṭanagaraṃ prāpya jayam āvedayaṃs tadā ॥04-63-17॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उत्तरेण (uttareṇa) - to the north; प्रहिता (prahitāḥ) - sent; दूताः (dūtāḥ) - messengers; ते (te) - they; शीघ्रगामिनः (śīghragāminaḥ) - swift-going; विराटनगरम् (virāṭanagaram) - Virata's city; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having arrived; जयं (jayaṃ) - victory; आवेदयन् (āvedayan) - reported; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then to the north sent messengers they, swift-going, having arrived at Virata's city, victory reported then.)
Then those swift messengers who had been sent to the north, having reached the city of Virata, reported the victory at that time. (04-63-17)
राज्ञस्ततः समाचख्यौ मन्त्री विजयमुत्तमम्। पराजयं कुरूणां चाप्युपायान्तं तथोत्तरम् ॥०४-६३-१८॥
rājñas tataḥ samācakhyau mantrī vijayam uttamam। parājayaṃ kurūṇāṃ cāpy upāyāntaṃ tathottaram॥04-63-18॥
[राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; समाचख्यौ (samācakhyau) - reported; मन्त्री (mantrī) - minister; विजयम् (vijayam) - victory; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - greatest; पराजयं (parājayam) - defeat; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उपायान्तम् (upāyāntam) - having arrived by means (strategy); तथ (tatha) - so; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - reply;]
(Of the king then reported the minister the greatest victory, the defeat of the Kurus and also the arrival by strategy, so the reply.)
Then the minister reported to the king the greatest victory, the defeat of the Kurus, and also the strategic arrival, and thus gave his reply. (04-63-18)
सर्वा विनिर्जिता गावः कुरवश्च पराजिताः। उत्तरः सह सूतेन कुशली च परन्तप ॥०४-६३-१९॥
sarvā vinirjitā gāvaḥ kuravaś ca parājitāḥ। uttaraḥ saha sūtena kuśalī ca parantapa ॥04-63-19॥
[सर्वा (sarvā) - all (feminine); विनिर्जिता (vinirjitā) - completely conquered; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; च (ca) - and; पराजिताः (parājitāḥ) - defeated; उत्तरः (uttaraḥ) - Uttara; सह (saha) - with; सूतेन (sūtena) - with (the) charioteer; कुशली (kuśalī) - safe; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(All completely conquered cows; Kurus and defeated; Uttara with the charioteer safe and O scorcher of foes.)
All the cows have been completely rescued, and the Kurus were defeated; Uttara and the charioteer are also safe, O scorcher of foes. (04-63-19)

(By good fortune, your cowherds are conquered, and the Kauravas also are defeated. By good fortune, your son is heard (to be) alive, O bull among kings (04-63-20))

नाद्भुतं त्वेव मन्येऽहं यत्ते पुत्रोऽजयत्कुरून्। ध्रुव एव जयस्तस्य यस्य यन्ता बृहन्नडा ॥०४-६३-२१॥

(Not wonderful but indeed I think, I, that your son conquered the Kurus. Sure indeed victory for him whose charioteer is Bṛhannadā.)
I do not consider it wonderful at all that your son conquered the Kurus. Certainly, victory is assured for him whose charioteer is Bṛhannadā. (04-63-21)

tato virāṭo nṛpatiḥ samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ। śrutvā tu vijayaṃ tasya kumārasyāmitaujasaḥ ॥ ācchādayitvā dūtāṃs tān mantriṇaḥ so'bhyacodayat ॥04-63-22॥

(Then Virāṭa, the king, with hair of the body bristling with joy, having heard the victory of that prince of immeasurable strength, but, having covered those messengers, he urged the ministers.)
Then King Virāṭa, his hair standing on end with joy, heard of the victory of that prince of immense power, and, after privately dismissing the messengers, urged his ministers. (04-63-22)
राजमार्गाः क्रियन्तां मे पताकाभिरलङ्कृताः। पुष्पोपहारैरर्च्यन्तां देवताश्चापि सर्वशः ॥०४-६३-२३॥
rājamārgāḥ kriyantāṃ me patākābhir-alaṅkṛtāḥ। puṣpopahārair-arcayantāṃ devatāś-cāpi sarvaśaḥ॥04-63-23॥

(Let the royal roads for me be made adorned with flags. Let the deities also on all sides be worshipped with offerings of flowers.)

कुमारा योधमुख्याश्च गणिकाश्च स्वलङ्कृताः। वादित्राणि च सर्वाणि प्रत्युद्यान्तु सुतं मम ॥०४-६३-२४॥

(Princes, chiefs of warriors, and courtesans, well-adorned, and all musical instruments, let them all advance to meet my son.)
Let the princes, chiefs of warriors, courtesans, all well adorned, and all musical instruments, proceed to welcome my son. (04-63-24)
घण्टापणवकः शीघ्रं मत्तमारुह्य वारणम्। शृङ्गाटकेषु सर्वेषु आख्यातु विजयं मम ॥०४-६३-२५॥
ghaṇṭāpaṇavakaḥ śīghraṃ mattam āruhya vāraṇam | śṛṅgāṭakeṣu sarveṣu ākhyātu vijayaṃ mama ॥04-63-25॥

श्रुत्वा तु तद्वचनं पार्थिवस्य; सर्वे पुनः स्वस्तिकपाणयश्च। भेर्यश्च तूर्याणि च वारिजाश्च; वेषैः परार्ध्यैः प्रमदाः शुभाश्च ॥०४-६३-२७॥

(Having heard but those words of the king, all again with hands in the svastika posture and drums and musical instruments and conch shells and by excellent garments the auspicious women also.)
But when those words of the king were heard, all, with hands in the svastika posture, along with drums, musical instruments, conch shells, and the auspicious women adorned in excellent garments, once again (joined in).
तथैव सूताः सह मागधैश्च; नन्दीवाद्याः पणवास्तूर्यवाद्याः। पुराद्विराटस्य महाबलस्य; प्रत्युद्ययुः पुत्रमनन्तवीर्यम् ॥०४-६३-२८॥
tathaiva sūtāḥ saha māgadhaiś ca; nandīvādyāḥ paṇavās tūryavādyāḥ. purād virāṭasya mahābalasya; pratyudyayuḥ putram anantavīryam ॥04-63-28॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; also; सूताः (sūtāḥ) - charioteers; bards; सह (saha) - together with; मागधैः (māgadhaiḥ) - with the Māgadhas; च (ca) - and; नन्दीवाद्याः (nandīvādyāḥ) - players of joyful instruments; पणवाः (paṇavāḥ) - drum (players); तूर्यवाद्याः (tūryavādyāḥ) - players of musical instruments; पुरात् (purāt) - from the city; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; महाबलस्य (mahābalasya) - of great strength; प्रत्युद्ययुः (pratyudyayuḥ) - went forth to meet; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; अनन्तवीर्यम् (anantavīryam) - of boundless vigor;]
(In the same way, the charioteers together with the Māgadhas and, the joyful instrument players, drummers, and players of musical instruments, from the city of Virāṭa of great strength, went forth to meet the son of boundless vigor.)
Likewise, the charioteers along with the Māgadhas, the players of joyful instruments, drummers, and other musicians from the city of the mighty Virāṭa came out to welcome the son of boundless strength. (04-63-28)
प्रस्थाप्य सेनां कन्याश्च गणिकाश्च स्वलङ्कृताः। मत्स्यराजो महाप्राज्ञः प्रहृष्ट इदमब्रवीत् ॥ अक्षानाहर सैरन्ध्रि कङ्क द्यूतं प्रवर्तताम् ॥०४-६३-२९॥
prasthāpya senāṃ kanyāś ca gaṇikāś ca sv-alaṅkṛtāḥ। matsyarājo mahāprājñaḥ prahṛṣṭa idam abravīt॥ akṣān āhara sairandhri kaṅka dyūtaṃ pravartatām॥04-63-29॥
[प्रस्थाप्य (prasthāpya) - having arranged; सेनाम् (senām) - army; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; च (ca) - and; गणिकाः (gaṇikāḥ) - courtesans; च (ca) - and; स्वलङ्कृताः (sv-alaṅkṛtāḥ) - well-adorned; मत्स्यराजः (matsyarājaḥ) - the king of the Matsyas; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - greatly wise; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अक्षान् (akṣān) - dice; आहर (āhara) - bring; सैरन्ध्रि (sairandhri) - O Sairandhri; कङ्क (kaṅka) - Kanka; द्यूतं (dyūtam) - dice-game; प्रवर्तताम् (pravartatām) - let be commenced;]
(Having arranged the army, maidens and courtesans well-adorned, the greatly wise and delighted king of the Matsyas said this: "Bring the dice, O Sairandhri. Kanka, let the dice-game be commenced." (04-63-29))
After arranging the army and the maidens and courtesans, all well adorned, the wise and delighted king of the Matsyas spoke these words: "Bring the dice, O Sairandhri. Kanka, let the dice-game begin." (04-63-29)
तं तथा वादिनं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवः प्रत्यभाषत। न देवितव्यं हृष्टेन कितवेनेति नः श्रुतम् ॥०४-६३-३०॥
taṁ tathā vāditaṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaḥ pratyabhāṣata। na devitavyaṁ hṛṣṭena kitabheneti naḥ śrutam ॥04-63-30॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; वादिनं (vādinam) - speaking; (the) speaker; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; (the) son of Pāṇḍu; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - replied; न (na) - not; देवितव्यं (devitavyaṁ) - boasting is to be done; boasting must be performed; हृष्टेन (hṛṣṭena) - by the delighted one; by the joyful one; कितवेना (kitavena) - by the gambler; इति (iti) - thus; so; नः (naḥ) - to us; by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - it has been heard; (it is) heard;]
(Him thus speaking having seen, Pāṇḍava replied. 'Not boasting by the delighted gambler is to be done,' thus to us it has been heard.)
Seeing him speaking thus, the Pāṇḍava replied: 'It has been heard by us that boasting is not to be done by a delighted gambler.' (04-63-30)
न त्वामद्य मुदा युक्तमहं देवितुमुत्सहे। प्रियं तु ते चिकीर्षामि वर्ततां यदि मन्यसे ॥०४-६३-३१॥
na tvām adya mudā yuktaṃ ahaṃ devitum utsahe। priyaṃ tu te cikīrṣāmi vartatāṃ yadi manyase॥04-63-31॥
[न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युक्तम् (yuktaṃ) - fitly; appropriately; अहम् (aham) - I; देवितुम् (devitum) - to play (or behave happily); उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear (thing or act); तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - for you; चिकीर्षामि (cikīrṣāmi) - intend to do; वर्तताम् (vartatām) - let it be so; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think (so);]
(Not you today with joy fittingly I am able to behave; dear thing but for you I intend to do, let it be so if you think so.)
I am not able to behave joyfully with you today as is fitting; but I wish to do what is dear to you, let it be so if you think so. (04-63-31)

striyo gāvo hiraṇyaṃ ca yaccānyadvasu kiñcana। na me kiñcittvayā rakṣyamantareṇāpi devitum ॥04-63-32॥
[स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; हिरण्यम् (hiraṇyam) - gold; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; वसु (vasu) - wealth; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - at all; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; रक्ष्यम् (rakṣyam) - to be protected; अन्तरेण (antareṇa) - without; अपि (api) - even; देवितुम् (devitum) - to live;]
(Women, cows, gold and whatever other wealth at all, not to me anything by you to be protected, without (you) even to live.)
Whether it be women, cows, gold, or any other kind of wealth—there is nothing at all that I can protect or even maintain my life without you. (04-63-32)

kiṁ te dyūtena rājendra bahudoṣeṇa mānada। devane bahavo doṣās tasmāttatparivarjayet ॥04-63-33॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; ते (te) - to you; द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - with gambling; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; बहुदोषेण (bahudoṣeṇa) - with many faults; मानद (mānada) - O bestower of honor; देवने (devane) - in gambling; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; दोषाः (doṣāḥ) - faults; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तत् (tat) - that; परिवर्जयेत् (parivarjayet) - one should avoid;]
(What to you with gambling, O king, with many faults, O bestower of honor? In gambling are many faults; therefore that one should avoid.)
O king and bestower of honor, what do you gain by gambling, which has many faults? There are many faults in gambling, therefore one should avoid it. (04-63-33)
श्रुतस्ते यदि वा दृष्टः पाण्डवो वै युधिष्ठिरः। स राज्यं सुमहत्स्फीतं भ्रातॄंश्च त्रिदशोपमान् ॥०४-६३-३४॥
śrutaḥ te yadi vā dṛṣṭaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ vai yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। sa rājyam sumahat sphītaṃ bhrātṝ̄ṃś ca tridaśopamān ॥04-63-34॥
[श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; referred to something known by hearing; ते (te) - by you; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; perceived; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - descendant of Pāṇḍu; वै (vai) - indeed; surely; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; सः (saḥ) - he; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; स्फीतम् (sphītam) - prosperous; abundant; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝ̄n) - brothers; च (ca) - and; त्रिदशोपमान् (tridaśopamān) - equal to the gods; ॥०४-६३-३४॥ (॥04-63-34॥) - ;]
(He, having been heard by you or seen—Yudhiṣṭhira, the Pāṇḍava indeed—he (possesses) a kingdom very great, prosperous, and brothers equal to the gods.)
If you have heard or seen Yudhiṣṭhira the Pāṇḍava, he has a very great and prosperous kingdom and brothers who are like the gods. (04-63-34)
द्यूते हारितवान्सर्वं तस्माद्द्यूतं न रोचये। अथ वा मन्यसे राजन्दीव्याव यदि रोचते ॥०४-६३-३५॥
dyūte hāritavān sarvaṁ tasmād dyūtaṁ na rocaye. atha vā manyase rājan dīvyāva yadi rocate ॥04-63-35॥
[द्यूते (dyūte) - in gambling; हारितवान् (hāritavān) - (I) have lost; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - everything; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; द्यूतं (dyūtaṁ) - gambling; न (na) - not; रोचये (rocaye) - (I) like; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; मन्यसे (manyase) - (you) think; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दीव्याव (dīvyāva) - let us gamble; यदि (yadi) - if; रोचते (rocate) - it pleases (you);]
(In gambling (I) have lost everything; therefore, gambling (I) do not like. Or, if (you) think, O king, let us gamble, if it pleases (you).)

(When the dice-game was proceeding, but the King of Matsya said to the Pāṇḍava: "See, by my son in battle such Kurus have been conquered.")
While the dice-game was ongoing, the King of Matsya said to the Pāṇḍava, "See, my son has conquered such Kurus in battle." (04-63-36)
ततोऽब्रवीन्मत्स्यराजं धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। बृहन्नडा यस्य यन्ता कथं स न विजेष्यति ॥०४-६३-३७॥
tato'bravīn matsyarājaṃ dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bṛhannadā yasya yantā kathaṃ sa na vijeṣyati॥04-63-37॥

Thus addressed, the angry king Matsya said to the Pāṇḍava: 'In the presence of my son, O twice-born, you praise the eunuch.' (04-63-38)
वाच्यावाच्यं न जानीषे नूनं मामवमन्यसे। भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्सर्वान्कस्मान्न स विजेष्यति ॥०४-६३-३९॥
vācyāvācyaṃ na jānīṣe nūnaṃ mām avamanyase। bhīṣmadroṇamukhān sarvān kasmān na sa vijeṣyati ॥04-63-39॥
[वाच्यावाच्यम् (vācyāvācyam) - what is to be said and what is not to be said; न (na) - not; जानीषे (jānīṣe) - you know; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; अवमन्यसे (avamanyase) - you disregard; भीष्मद्रोणमुखान् (bhīṣmadroṇamukhān) - Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and the leaders; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; विजेष्यति (vijeṣyati) - will conquer;]
(What is to be said and what is not to be said you do not know; indeed, you disregard me. Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and the leaders, all—why will he not conquer?)
You do not know what may or may not be spoken; truly, you disregard me. Why would he not conquer all the leaders like Bhīṣma and Droṇa? (04-63-39)
वयस्यत्वात्तु ते ब्रह्मन्नपराधमिमं क्षमे। नेदृशं ते पुनर्वाच्यं यदि जीवितुमिच्छसि ॥०४-६३-४०॥
vayasytvāt tu te brahman aparādham imaṃ kṣame। nedṛśaṃ te punar vācyaṃ yadi jīvitum icchasi॥04-63-40॥
[वयस्यत्वात् (vayasyatvāt) - because of friendship; तु (tu) - however; ते (te) - to you; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; अपराधम् (aparādham) - offense; इमम् (imam) - this; क्षमे (kṣame) - I forgive; ने (na) - not; इदृशम् (idṛśam) - such; ते (te) - to you; पुनः (punar) - again; वाच्यम् (vācyaṃ) - should be spoken; यदि (yadi) - if; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(Because of friendship, however, O Brāhmaṇa, I forgive this offense of yours. Not such (words) should be spoken by you again, if to live you wish.)
O Brāhmaṇa, I forgive this offense of yours because of our friendship; but you must not speak such words to me again, if you wish to live. (04-63-40)

मरुद्गणैः परिवृतः साक्षादपि शतक्रतुः। कोऽन्यो बृहन्नडायास्तान्प्रतियुध्येत सङ्गतान् ॥०४-६३-४२॥
marud-gaṇaiḥ parivṛtaḥ sākṣād api śatakratuḥ। ko'nyaḥ bṛhannadāyās tān pratiyudhyeta saṅgatān ॥04-63-42॥

Who else except Bṛhannadā could fight against those joined together, even when Indra himself is directly surrounded by the hosts of Maruts? (04-63-42)

बहुशः प्रतिषिद्धोऽसि न च वाचं नियच्छसि। नियन्ता चेन्न विद्येत न कश्चिद्धर्ममाचरेत् ॥०४-६३-४३॥
bahuśaḥ pratiṣiddho'si na ca vācaṃ niyacchasi। niyantā cen na vidyeta na kaścid dharmam ācaret ॥04-63-43॥
[बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; often; प्रतिषिद्धः (pratiṣiddhaḥ) - prohibited; restrained; असि (asi) - you are; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; वाचं (vācam) - speech; words; नियच्छसि (niyacchasi) - you restrain; you check; नियन्ता (niyantā) - controller; restrainer; चेत् (cet) - if; न (na) - not; विद्येत (vidyeta) - exists; would be; न (na) - not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; righteousness; आचरेत् (ācaret) - would practice; perform;]
(Often you are prohibited, and you do not restrain your speech. If there would not exist a controller, no one would practice dharma.)
You are often restrained, yet you do not control your speech. If there were no controller, no one would observe righteousness. (04-63-43)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

(Then, having become angry, the king struck him Yudhiṣṭhira with the dice forcefully on the face, from anger, saying "Not thus indeed," reproaching.)
Then the enraged king struck Yudhiṣṭhira forcefully on the face with the dice, angrily reproaching him, saying "Not like this indeed." (04-63-44)
बलवत्प्रतिविद्धस्य नस्तः शोणितमागमत्। तदप्राप्तं महीं पार्थः पाणिभ्यां प्रत्यगृह्णत ॥०४-६३-४५॥
balavat-pratividdhasya nastaḥ śoṇitam āgamat। tad aprāptaṃ mahīṃ pārthaḥ pāṇibhyāṃ pratyagṛhṇata ॥04-63-45॥
[बलवत् (balavat) - powerful; प्रतिविद्धस्य (pratividdhasya) - of (him) pierced; नस्तः (nastaḥ) - from (his) nose; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood; आगमत् (āgamat) - came; तत् (tat) - that; अप्राप्तम् (aprāptam) - not reaching; महीम् (mahīm) - to the ground; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); पाणिभ्यां (pāṇibhyām) - with (his) hands; प्रत्यगृह्णत (pratyagṛhṇata) - caught;]
(The blood of the powerful (one), pierced, came from his nose. That, not reaching the ground, Pārtha (Arjuna) caught with (his) hands.)
From the nose of the mighty, when pierced, blood flowed; Arjuna caught it with his hands before it reached the ground. (04-63-45)
अवैक्षत च धर्मात्मा द्रौपदीं पार्श्वतः स्थिताम्। सा वेद तमभिप्रायं भर्तुश्चित्तवशानुगा ॥०४-६३-४६॥
avaikṣata ca dharmātmā draupadīṁ pārśvataḥ sthitām. sā veda tamabhiprāyaṁ bhartuś cittavaśānugā ॥04-63-46॥
[अवैक्षत (avaikṣata) - looked at; च (ca) - and; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the one whose soul is righteousness; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṁ) - Draupadī (accusative); पार्श्वतः (pārśvataḥ) - at the side (from the side); स्थिताम् (sthitām) - standing; सा (sā) - she; वेद (veda) - knows; तमभिप्रायं (tamabhiprāyaṁ) - his intention; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; चित्तवशानुगा (cittavaśānugā) - devoted to the wish of (following the will of) the mind;]
(Looked at and the righteous-souled one Draupadī, standing at the side. She knows his intention, of the husband, devoted to the will of the mind.)
The righteous-souled one looked at Draupadī, who was standing at his side. She, devoted to her husband's will, knew his intention. (04-63-46)
पूरयित्वा च सौवर्णं पात्रं कांस्यमनिन्दिता। तच्छोणितं प्रत्यगृह्णाद्यत्प्रसुस्राव पाण्डवात् ॥०४-६३-४७॥
pūrayitvā ca sauvarṇaṁ pātraṁ kāṁsyam aninditā. tac choṇitaṁ pratyagṛhṇād yat prasusrāva pāṇḍavāt ॥04-63-47॥
[पूरयित्वा (pūrayitvā) - having filled; च (ca) - and; सौवर्णम् (sauvarṇam) - golden; पात्रम् (pātram) - vessel; कांस्यम् (kāṁsyam) - bronze; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - the blameless lady; तत् (tat) - that; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood; प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - she received; यत् (yat) - which; प्रसुस्राव (prasusrāva) - flowed out; पाण्डवात् (pāṇḍavāt) - from Pāṇḍava;]
(Having filled and a golden vessel, the blameless lady (took) a bronze (one). That blood she received, which flowed out from the Pāṇḍava.)
After filling a golden vessel and (then) a bronze one, the blameless lady received the blood which flowed from the Pāṇḍava. (04-63-47)
अथोत्तरः शुभैर्गन्धैर्माल्यैश्च विविधैस्तथा। अवकीर्यमाणः संहृष्टो नगरं स्वैरमागमत् ॥०४-६३-४८॥
athottaraḥ śubhair gandhair mālyaiś ca vividhais tathā। avakīryamāṇaḥ saṃhṛṣṭo nagaraṃ svairam āgamat ॥04-63-48॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उत्तरः (uttaraḥ) - the one who returned; (here, the returning person) शुभैः (śubhaiḥ) - with auspicious; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with perfumes; माल्यैः (mālyaiḥ) - with garlands; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अवकीर्यमाणः (avakīryamāṇaḥ) - being showered; संहृष्टः (saṃhṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; नगरम् (nagaraṃ) - city; स्वैरम् (svairam) - freely; आगमत् (āgamat) - he entered;]
(Then the returning one, being showered with auspicious perfumes and garlands and likewise with various (offerings), joyful, freely entered the city.)
Then the returning person, joyfully showered with auspicious perfumes and various garlands, entered the city freely. (04-63-48)
सभाज्यमानः पौरैश्च स्त्रीभिर्जानपदैस्तथा। आसाद्य भवनद्वारं पित्रे स प्रत्यहारयत् ॥०४-६३-४९॥
sabhājyamānaḥ pauraiś ca strībhiḥ jānapadais tathā| āsādya bhavanadvāraṃ pitre sa pratyāhārayat ॥04-63-49॥

(Being honored by townsmen and by women, also by country people, having reached the door of the house, to (his) father, he reported.)

ततो द्वाःस्थः प्रविश्यैव विराटमिदमब्रवीत्। बृहन्नडासहायस्ते पुत्रो द्वार्युत्तरः स्थितः ॥०४-६३-५०॥
tato dvāḥsthaḥ praviśyaiva virāṭam idam abravīt। bṛhannadāsahāyas te putro dvāry uttaraḥ sthitaḥ॥04-63-50॥

(Then the doorkeeper, having just entered, said this to Virāṭa: Bṛhannadā's companion, your son Uttara, is stationed at the door.)
Then the doorkeeper entered and said to Virāṭa: 'Bṛhannadā's companion, your son Uttara, is at the door.' (4-63-50)
ततो हृष्टो मत्स्यराजः क्षत्तारमिदमब्रवीत्। प्रवेश्यतामुभौ तूर्णं दर्शनेप्सुरहं तयोः ॥०४-६३-५१॥
tato hṛṣṭo matsyarājaḥ kṣattāram idam abravīt। praveśyatām ubhau tūrṇaṃ darśanepsur ahaṃ tayoḥ॥04-63-51॥

(Then, gladdened, the king of fishes said this to the chamberlain: 'Let both of them be brought in quickly, I am desiring to see those two.' (04-63-51))
Then the delighted king of fishes said to the chamberlain, 'Have both brought in quickly; I wish to see them.' (04-63-51)
क्षत्तारं कुरुराजस्तु शनैः कर्ण उपाजपत्। उत्तरः प्रविशत्वेको न प्रवेश्या बृहन्नडा ॥०४-६३-५२॥
kṣattāraṃ kururājas tu śanaiḥ karṇa upājapat। uttaraḥ praviśatv eko na praveśyā bṛhannadā ॥04-63-52॥
[क्षत्तारं (kṣattāram) - the charioteer; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - the king of the Kurus; तु (tu) - but; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - gently; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; उपाजपत् (upājapat) - addressed; उत्तरः (uttaraḥ) - Uttara; प्रविशतु (praviśatu) - let him enter; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; न (na) - not; प्रवेश्या (praveśyā) - to be permitted to enter; बृहन्नडा (bṛhannadā) - Bṛhannadā;]
(But the king of the Kurus, Karṇa, gently addressed the charioteer. Let Uttara enter alone; Bṛhannadā is not to be permitted to enter.)
But Karṇa, the king of the Kurus, gently addressed the charioteer: "Let Uttara enter alone; Bṛhannadā is not to be allowed in." (04-63-52)
एतस्य हि महाबाहो व्रतमेतत्समाहितम्। यो ममाङ्गे व्रणं कुर्याच्छोणितं वापि दर्शयेत् ॥ अन्यत्र सङ्ग्रामगतान्न स जीवेदसंशयम् ॥०४-६३-५३॥
etasya hi mahābāho vratam etat samāhitam। yo mama aṅge vraṇaṃ kuryāt śoṇitaṃ vā api darśayet॥ anyatra saṅgrāma-gatāt na sa jīvet asaṃśayam॥04-63-53॥
[एतस्य (etasya) - of this; हि (hi) - indeed; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; एतत् (etat) - this; समाहितम् (samāhitam) - firmly established; यो (yo) - who; मम (mama) - my; अङ्गे (aṅge) - on (my) limb; व्रणम् (vraṇam) - wound; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would make; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; दर्शयेत् (darśayet) - would show; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; सङ्ग्रामगतात् (saṅgrāma-gatāt) - from one gone to battle; न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; जीवेत् (jīvet) - would live; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - doubtlessly;]
(Of this indeed, O mighty-armed, this vow is firmly established: whoever on my limb would make a wound or would even show blood, except from one gone to battle, he would not live, doubtlessly.)
This, O mighty-armed one, is a firmly established vow: whoever causes a wound on my body or even shows blood—unless it comes from one who has gone to battle—he will certainly not live, without a doubt. (04-63-53)
न मृष्याद्भृशसङ्क्रुद्धो मां दृष्ट्वैव सशोणितम्। विराटमिह सामात्यं हन्यात्सबलवाहनम् ॥०४-६३-५४॥
na mṛṣyād bhṛśasaṅkruddho māṃ dṛṣṭvaiva saśoṇitam। virāṭam iha sāmātyaṃ hanyāt sabalavāhanam॥04-63-54॥
[न (na) - not; मृष्यात् (mṛṣyāt) - would endure; भृशसङ्क्रुद्धः (bhṛśasaṅkruddhaḥ) - greatly enraged; माम् (mām) - me; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - just; सशोणितम् (saśoṇitam) - with blood; विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virata; इह (iha) - here; सामात्यम् (sāmātyam) - with ministers; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - might kill; सबलवाहनम् (sabalavāhanam) - with army and vehicles;]
(Not would endure greatly enraged me having seen just with blood; Virata here with ministers might kill with army and vehicles.)
If greatly enraged, on just seeing me wounded and with blood, he (the king) would not endure it but might kill Virata here, along with his ministers, army, and vehicles. (04-63-54)
