ततो राज्ञः सुतो ज्येष्ठः प्राविशत्पृथिवीञ्जयः। सोऽभिवाद्य पितुः पादौ धर्मराजमपश्यत ॥०४-६४-१॥
tato rājñaḥ suto jyeṣṭhaḥ prāviśat pṛthivīṃ jayaḥ. so'bhivādya pituḥ pādau dharmarājam apaśyat ॥04-64-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; जयः (jayaḥ) - Jaya (proper noun, name); सः (saḥ) - he; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; पितुः (pituḥ) - father's; पादौ (pādau) - feet; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmaraja (proper noun, name of Yudhishthira); अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw;]
(Then the king's son, the eldest, Jaya, entered the earth. He, having saluted the feet of his father, saw Dharmaraja.)
Then the king's eldest son Jaya entered; having saluted his father's feet, he saw Dharmaraja. (04-64-1)
स तं रुधिरसंसिक्तमनेकाग्रमनागसम्। भूमावासीनमेकान्ते सैरन्ध्र्या समुपस्थितम् ॥०४-६४-२॥
sa taṁ rudhira-saṁsiktam anekāgram anāgasam। bhūmāu āsīnam ekānte sairandhryā samupasthitam ॥04-64-2॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṁ) - him; रुधिरसंसिक्तम् (rudhira-saṁsiktam) - sprinkled with blood; अनेकाग्रम् (anekāgram) - attentive on many things; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - guiltless; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; एकान्ते (ekānte) - in a secluded place; सैरन्ध्र्या (sairandhryā) - by Sairandhri; समुपस्थितम् (samupasthitam) - approached;]
(He him sprinkled with blood, attentive on many things, guiltless, sitting on the ground, in a secluded place, approached by Sairandhri.)
He saw him, covered in blood, faultless, sitting on the ground in a secluded place, approached by Sairandhri. (04-64-2)
ततः पप्रच्छ पितरं त्वरमाण इवोत्तरः। केनायं ताडितो राजन्केन पापमिदं कृतम् ॥०४-६४-३॥
tataḥ papraccha pitaraṃ tvaramāṇa ivo'ttaraḥ। kena ayaṃ tāḍitaḥ rājan kena pāpam idaṃ kṛtam॥04-64-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - (he) asked; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - his father; त्वरमाण (tvaramāṇa) - hastening; इव (iva) - as if; उत्तरः (uttaraḥ) - the son; केन (kena) - by whom; अयम् (ayam) - this; ताडितः (tāḍitaḥ) - has been struck; राजन् (rājan) - O King; केन (kena) - by whom; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done;]
(Thereafter, the son, as if hastening, asked his father: By whom has this been struck, O King, by whom has this sin been done?)
Then the son, appearing to hasten, asked his father: 'O King, by whom has this one been struck? By whom was this sinful act done?' (04-64-3)

मयायं ताडितो जिह्मो न चाप्येतावदर्हति। प्रशस्यमाने यः शूरे त्वयि षण्ढं प्रशंसति ॥०४-६४-४॥
mayāyaṃ tāḍito jihmo na cāpyetāvadarhati। praśasyamāne yaḥ śūre tvayi ṣaṇḍhaṃ praśaṃsati ॥04-64-4॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; अयम् (ayam) - this (one); ताडितः (tāḍitaḥ) - struck; जिह्मः (jihmaḥ) - crooked; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; एतावत् (etāvat) - so much; such extent; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; प्रशस्यमाने (praśasyamāne) - being praised; यः (yaḥ) - who; शूरे (śūre) - in the brave one; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; षण्ढम् (ṣaṇḍham) - an impotent man; eunuch; प्रशंसति (praśaṃsati) - praises;]
(By me this crooked one, being struck, does not even deserve so much. When the brave one (you) is being praised, who praises an impotent man?)
I have struck this crooked man, and he hardly deserves this much. When you, the brave one, are being praised, who would praise a eunuch? (04-64-4)

अकार्यं ते कृतं राजन्क्षिप्रमेव प्रसाद्यताम्। मा त्वा ब्रह्मविषं घोरं समूलमपि निर्दहेत् ॥०४-६४-५॥
akāryaṃ te kṛtaṃ rājan kṣiprameva prasādyatām। mā tvā brahmaviṣaṃ ghoraṃ samūlam api nirdadhet ॥04-64-5॥
[अकार्यं (akāryam) - improper act; undesirable deed; ते (te) - by you; कृतं (kṛtam) - has been done; राजन् (rājan) - O king; क्षित्प्रमेव (kṣiprameva) - immediately indeed; at once; प्रसाद्यताम् (prasādyatām) - be propitiated; be appeased; मा (mā) - let not; do not; त्वा (tvā) - you; ब्रह्मविषं (brahmaviṣam) - Brahman's poison; divine poison; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; समूलम् (samūlam) - with the root; completely; अपि (api) - even; निर्दहेत् (nirdadhet) - might consume; might burn;]
(An improper act by you, O king, has been done; immediately indeed, let him be appeased. Let not the terrible poison of Brahman, even with the root, consume you.)
O king, you have done something improper; at once seek to appease him, lest the terrible poison of a Brahman burn you up completely, root and all. (04-64-5)

स पुत्रस्य वचः श्रुत्वा विराटो राष्ट्रवर्धनः। क्षमयामास कौन्तेयं भस्मच्छन्नमिवानलम् ॥०४-६४-६॥
sa putrasya vacaḥ śrutvā virāṭo rāṣṭravardhanaḥ | kṣamayāmāsa kaunteyaṃ bhasmacchannam ivānalam ॥04-64-6॥
[स (sa) - he; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of (his) son; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विराटः (virāṭaḥ) - Viraata (proper noun); राष्ट्रवर्धनः (rāṣṭravardhanaḥ) - enlarger of the kingdom; क्षमयामास (kṣamayāmāsa) - forgave; कौन्तेयम् (kaunteyam) - the son of Kunti; भस्मच्छन्नम् (bhasmacchannam) - covered with ashes; इव (iva) - like; अनलम् (analam) - fire;]
(He, having heard the word of (his) son, Viraata, enlarger of the kingdom, forgave the son of Kunti, like fire covered with ashes.)
Having heard his son's words, King Viraata, the enlarger of the kingdom, forgave Kunti's son, just as fire (is) covered by ashes. (04-64-6)
क्षमयन्तं तु राजानं पाण्डवः प्रत्यभाषत। चिरं क्षान्तमिदं राजन्न मन्युर्विद्यते मम ॥०४-६४-७॥
kṣamayantaṃ tu rājānaṃ pāṇḍavaḥ pratyabhāṣata। ciraṃ kṣāntam idaṃ rājan manyur vidyate mama॥04-64-7॥
[क्षमयन्तं (kṣamayantam) - forgiving (the one who is forgiving); तु (tu) - but; राजानं (rājānam) - the king; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna, or a son of Pāṇḍu); प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - spoke (replied); चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; क्षान्तम् (kṣāntam) - has been endured; इदं (idaṃ) - this; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; मम (mama) - my;]
(But to the forgiving king, the Pāṇḍava replied: For a long time, this has been endured, O king; anger exists in me.)
But the Pāṇḍava replied to the forgiving king, "O king, this has long been endured; yet, anger still exists in me." (04-64-7)
यदि ह्येतत्पतेद्भूमौ रुधिरं मम नस्ततः। सराष्ट्रस्त्वं महाराज विनश्येथा न संशयः ॥०४-६४-८॥
yadi hy etat patet bhūmau rudhiraṃ mama nas tataḥ. sarāṣṭras tvaṃ mahārāja vinaśyethā na saṃśayaḥ ॥04-64-8॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; पतेत् (patet) - were to fall; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; रुधिरम् (rudhiraṃ) - blood; मम (mama) - of me; नः (naḥ) - our; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स-राष्ट्रः (sa-rāṣṭraḥ) - with kingdom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; विनश्येथाः (vinaśyethā) - would perish; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(If indeed this, my blood, were to fall on the ground, then you, O great king, along with your kingdom, would perish—no doubt.)
If, indeed, this blood of mine were to fall upon the ground, then you, O great king, together with your kingdom, would surely perish—there is no doubt about it. (04-64-8)
न दूषयामि ते राजन्यच्च हन्याददूषकम्। बलवन्तं महाराज क्षिप्रं दारुणमाप्नुयात् ॥०४-६४-९॥
na dūṣayāmi te rājanya ca hanyād adūṣakam। balavantaṃ mahārāja kṣipraṃ dāruṇam āpnuyāt॥04-64-9॥
[न (na) - not; दूषयामि (dūṣayāmi) - I defame; ते (te) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यच्च (yac ca) - and that which; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should kill; अदूषकम् (adūṣakam) - the innocent; बलवन्तं (balavantam) - the powerful; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - terrible; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - should attain;]
(Not I defame your, O king, and that which should kill the innocent, the powerful, O great king, quickly terrible should attain.)
O king, I do not defame you; and whoever kills an innocent, O great king, the powerful should quickly attain a terrible fate. (04-64-9)
शोणिते तु व्यतिक्रान्ते प्रविवेश बृहन्नडा। अभिवाद्य विराटं च कङ्कं चाप्युपतिष्ठत ॥०४-६४-१०॥
śoṇite tu vyatikrānte praviveśa bṛhannadā। abhivādya virāṭaṃ ca kaṅkaṃ cāpyupatiṣṭhata ॥04-64-10॥
[शोणिते (śoṇite) - in the (court) of Śoṇita; तु (tu) - but; व्यतिक्रान्ते (vyatikrānte) - having passed; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; बृहन्नडा (bṛhannadā) - Bṛhannadā; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; विराटं (virāṭam) - Virāṭa; च (ca) - and; कङ्कं (kaṅkam) - Kaṅka; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उपतिष्ठत (upatiṣṭhata) - approached, attended;]
(But when the court of Śoṇita had been passed, Bṛhannadā entered; having saluted both Virāṭa and Kaṅka, she also attended (them).)
But after the court of Śoṇita had been passed, Bṛhannadā entered; she saluted Virāṭa and Kaṅka and then attended upon them. (04-64-10)
क्षमयित्वा तु कौरव्यं रणादुत्तरमागतम्। प्रशशंस ततो मत्स्यः शृण्वतः सव्यसाचिनः ॥०४-६४-११॥
kṣamayitvā tu kauravyaṃ raṇād uttar am āgatam। praśaśaṃsa tato matsyaḥ śṛṇvataḥ savyasācinaḥ ॥04-64-11॥
[क्षमयित्वा (kṣamayitvā) - having pardoned; तु (tu) - but; कौरव्यम् (kauravyam) - the Kaurava (person from the Kuru dynasty); रणात् (raṇāt) - from battle; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - answer; आगतम् (āgatam) - having come; प्रशशंस (praśaśaṃsa) - praised; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the Matsya (king of Matsya); शृण्वतः (śṛṇvataḥ) - hearing; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Having pardoned the Kaurava who had come with an answer from battle, the Matsya then praised (him) as Savyasācin was hearing.)
But having pardoned the Kaurava who had come from the battle with an answer, the Matsya praised him, as Savyasācin (Arjuna) was listening. (04-64-11)
त्वया दायादवानस्मि कैकेयीनन्दिवर्धन। त्वया मे सदृशः पुत्रो न भूतो न भविष्यति ॥०४-६४-१२॥
tvayā dāyādavānasmi kaikeyī-nandivardhana। tvayā me sadṛśaḥ putro na bhūto na bhaviṣyati ॥04-64-12॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दायादवान् (dāyādavān) - having an heir; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कैकेयीनन्दिवर्धन (kaikeyī-nandivardhana) - O augmenter of the joy of Kaikeyi; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मे (me) - for me; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; न (na) - not; भूतः (bhūtaḥ) - has been; न (na) - nor; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(By you, I am one having an heir, O augmenter of the joy of Kaikeyi. By you, for me, an equal son has not been, nor will be.)
Through you, O increaser of Kaikeyi's joy, I have an heir. By you, I have had no son equal to you, nor will I ever have one. (04-64-12)
पदं पदसहस्रेण यश्चरन्नापराध्नुयात्। तेन कर्णेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥०४-६४-१३॥
padaṃ padasahasreṇa yaś caran nāparādhnuyāt। tena karṇena te tāta katham āsīt samāgamaḥ ॥04-64-13॥
[पदं (padaṃ) - one step; पदसहस्रेण (padasahasreṇa) - with a thousand steps; यः (yaḥ) - who; चरन् (caran) - walking; न (na) - not; अपराध्नुयात् (aparādhnuyāt) - would offend; तेन (tena) - with/by that; कर्णेन (karṇena) - with Karna; ते (te) - your; तात (tāta) - dear (addressing); कथम् (katham) - how; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - meeting;]
(With one step by a thousand steps who, walking, would not offend; with that Karna, your dear, how was the meeting?)
O dear one, how was your meeting with that Karna, by whom, even walking a thousand steps with just one step, would not offend? (04-64-13)
मनुष्यलोके सकले यस्य तुल्यो न विद्यते। यः समुद्र इवाक्षोभ्यः कालाग्निरिव दुःसहः ॥ तेन भीष्मेण ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥०४-६४-१४॥
manuṣyaloke sakale yasya tulyo na vidyate। yaḥ samudra ivākṣobhyaḥ kālāgniriva duḥsahaḥ ॥ tena bhīṣmeṇa te tāta kathamāsītsamāgamaḥ ॥04-64-14॥
[मनुष्यलोके (manuṣya-loke) - in the world of humans; सकले (sakale) - in all (in the whole); यस्य (yasya) - of whom; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; यः (yaḥ) - who; समुद्र (samudra) - the ocean; इव (iva) - like; अक्षोभ्यः (akṣobhyaḥ) - unshakable; कालाग्निः (kālāgniḥ) - the fire of time (death); इव (iva) - like; दुःसहः (duḥsahaḥ) - unbearable; तेन (tena) - with him (by him); भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; ते (te) - your; तात (tāta) - O dear one; कथम् (katham) - how; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - encounter (meeting);]
(In the world of humans, in all, of whom an equal is not found; who is like the ocean, unshakable; like the fire of time, unbearable; with him, by Bhishma, your, O dear one, how was the encounter?)
In the world of humans, there is none whose equal exists; the one who is as unshakable as the ocean, as irresistible as the fire of time— with that Bhishma, O dear one, how did your encounter take place? (04-64-14)
आचार्यो वृष्णिवीराणां पाण्डवानां च यो द्विजः। सर्वक्षत्रस्य चाचार्यः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥ तेन द्रोणेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥०४-६४-१५॥
ācāryo vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca yo dvijaḥ। sarvakṣatrasya cācāryaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ॥ tena droṇena te tāta katham āsīt samāgamaḥ ॥04-64-15॥
[आचार्यः (ācāryaḥ) - preceptor; वृष्णिवीराणाम् (vṛṣṇivīrāṇām) - of the heroes of the Vṛṣṇi (clan); पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; सर्वक्षत्रस्य (sarvakṣatrasya) - of all kṣatriyas; च (ca) - and; आचार्यः (ācāryaḥ) - preceptor; सर्वशस्त्रभृताम् (sarvaśastrabhṛtām) - of all wielders of weapons; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; तेन (tena) - by that; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - Droṇa; ते (te) - your; तात (tāta) - O dear one; कथम् (katham) - how; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - meeting;]
(The preceptor of the heroes of the Vṛṣṇis, of the Pāṇḍavas, and who is a brāhmaṇa; preceptor of all kṣatriyas and the best of all wielders of weapons; by that Droṇa, your, O dear one, how was (the) meeting?)
He who was the preceptor of the heroes of the Vṛṣṇis and of the Pāṇḍavas, that brāhmaṇa, the teacher of all kṣatriyas and the greatest among all wielders of weapons—O dear one, how was your encounter with that Droṇa? (04-64-15)
आचार्यपुत्रो यः शूरः सर्वशस्त्रभृतामपि। अश्वत्थामेति विख्यातः कथं तेन समागमः ॥०४-६४-१६॥
ācāryaputro yaḥ śūraḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtām api। aśvatthāmeti vikhyātaḥ kathaṁ tena samāgamaḥ ॥04-64-16॥

(The teacher's son who is heroic, even among all the wielders of weapons, thus well-known as 'Aśvatthāman'—how with him (was the) meeting?)
How did the meeting take place with Aśvatthāman, the son of the teacher, who is heroic and famed even among all wielders of weapons? (04-64-16)
रणे यं प्रेक्ष्य सीदन्ति हृतस्वा वणिजो यथा। कृपेण तेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥०४-६४-१७॥
raṇe yaṃ prekṣya sīdanti hṛtasvā vaṇijo yathā। kṛpeṇa tena te tāta katham āsīt samāgamaḥ ॥04-64-17॥
[रणे (raṇe) - in battle; यं (yaṃ) - whom; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - upon seeing; सीदन्ति (sīdanti) - sink; lose heart; हृतस्वा (hṛtasvā) - having lost wealth; वणिजः (vaṇijaḥ) - merchants; यथा (yathā) - just as; कृपेण (kṛpeṇa) - with Kṛpa; तेन (tena) - with him; ते (te) - your; तात (tāta) - dear one; father; कथम् (katham) - how; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - meeting;]
(In battle whom, upon seeing, lose heart, like merchants having lost wealth; with Kṛpa, with him, your, dear one, how was meeting?)
O dear one, in battle, seeing whom even merchants who have lost their wealth become dispirited—how did you have your meeting with that Kṛpa? (04-64-17)
पर्वतं योऽभिविध्येत राजपुत्रो महेषुभिः। दुर्योधनेन ते तात कथमासीत्समागमः ॥०४-६४-१८॥
parvataṃ yo'bhividhyeta rājaputro maheṣubhiḥ। duryodhanena te tāta katham āsīt samāgamaḥ॥04-64-18॥

O prince who could pierce a mountain with great arrows, how did your father have a meeting with Duryodhana? (04-64-18)

न मया निर्जिता गावो न मया निर्जिताः परे। कृतं तु कर्म तत्सर्वं देवपुत्रेण केनचित् ॥०४-६४-१९॥
na mayā nirjitā gāvaḥ na mayā nirjitāḥ pare। kṛtaṃ tu karma tat sarvaṃ devaputreṇa kenacit॥04-64-19॥
[न (na) - not; मया (mayā) - by me; निर्जिता (nirjitāḥ) - conquered (feminine plural); गावो (gāvaḥ) - cows; न (na) - not; मया (mayā) - by me; निर्जिताः (nirjitāḥ) - conquered (masculine plural); परे (pare) - others; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; तु (tu) - indeed; कर्म (karma) - act; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; देवपुत्रेण (devaputreṇa) - by a son of a god; केनचित् (kenacit) - by some;]
(Not by me were conquered the cows, not by me were conquered the others. Done indeed is that entire act by some son of a god.)
I did not conquer the cows, nor did I conquer the others. That whole deed was performed by some son of a god. (04-64-19)
स हि भीतं द्रवन्तं मां देवपुत्रो न्यवारयत्। स चातिष्ठद्रथोपस्थे वज्रहस्तनिभो युवा ॥०४-६४-२०॥
sa hi bhītaṃ dravantaṃ māṃ devaputro nyavārayat। sa cātiṣṭhad rathopasthe vajrahastanibho yuvā॥04-64-20॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; भीतम् (bhītam) - afraid; द्रवन्तम् (dravantam) - running; माम् (mām) - me; देवपुत्रः (devaputraḥ) - son of a god; न्यवारयत् (nyavārayat) - restrained; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - stood; रथोपस्थे (rathopasthe) - on the chariot-seat; वज्रहस्तनिभः (vajrahastanibhaḥ) - like one with the form of a thunderbolt in hand; युवा (yuvā) - a young man;]
(He indeed an afraid running me son of a god restrained. He also stood on the chariot-seat like one with the form of a thunderbolt in hand, a young man.)
For he, the son of a god, restrained me, afraid and running. And he stood on the chariot-seat, a young man resembling one whose hand held a thunderbolt. (04-64-20)
तेन ता निर्जिता गावस्तेन ते कुरवो जिताः। तस्य तत्कर्म वीरस्य न मया तात तत्कृतम् ॥०४-६४-२१॥
tena tā nirjitā gāvas tena te kuravo jitāḥ। tasya tat karma vīrasya na mayā tāta tat kṛtam॥04-64-21॥

(By him, those subdued cows; by him, those Kurus conquered. Of him, that action of the hero, not by me, O father, that done.)
By him those cows were subdued; by him those Kurus were conquered. O father, that heroic deed was not done by me, but by him. (04-64-21)
स हि शारद्वतं द्रोणं द्रोणपुत्रं च वीर्यवान्। सूतपुत्रं च भीष्मं च चकार विमुखाञ्शरैः ॥०४-६४-२२॥
sa hi śāradvataṃ droṇaṃ droṇaputraṃ ca vīryavān. sūtaputraṃ ca bhīṣmaṃ ca cakāra vimukhāñśaraiḥ ॥04-64-22॥

He indeed made Kr̥pa (son of Śāradvata), Droṇa, Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman), the mighty Karṇa (son of the charioteer), and Bhīṣma turn away by his arrows. (04-64-22)
दुर्योधनं च समरे सनागमिव यूथपम्। प्रभग्नमब्रवीद्भीतं राजपुत्रं महाबलम् ॥०४-६४-२३॥
duryodhanaṁ ca samare sanāgam iva yūthapam। prabhagnam abravīd bhītam rājaputraṁ mahābalam॥04-64-23॥

न हास्तिनपुरे त्राणं तव पश्यामि किञ्चन। व्यायामेन परीप्सस्व जीवितं कौरवात्मज ॥०४-६४-२४॥
na hāstinapure trāṇaṃ tava paśyāmi kiñcana। vyāyāmena parīpsasva jīvitaṃ kauravātmaja ॥04-64-24॥

न मोक्ष्यसे पलायंस्त्वं राजन्युद्धे मनः कुरु। पृथिवीं भोक्ष्यसे जित्वा हतो वा स्वर्गमाप्स्यसि ॥०४-६४-२५॥
na mokṣyase palāyaṁs tvaṁ rājann yuddhe manaḥ kuru. pṛthivīṁ bhokṣyase jitvā hato vā svargam āpsyasi ॥04-64-25॥

तत्र मे रोमहर्षोऽभूदूरुस्तम्भश्च मारिष। यदभ्रघनसङ्काशमनीकं व्यधमच्छरैः ॥०४-६४-२७॥
tatra me romaharṣo'bhūdūrustambhaśca māriṣa। yadabhraghana-saṅkāśamanīkaṃ vyadhamaccharaiḥ ॥04-64-27॥

(There my horripilation arose, weakness of thighs too, O dear, which cloud-mass-like host (army) shattered with arrows.)
There, O dear, my hair stood on end and my thighs became weak when (I saw) the host, resembling a mass of clouds, being shattered with arrows. (04-64-27)
तत्प्रणुद्य रथानीकं सिंहसंहननो युवा। कुरूंस्तान्प्रहसन्राजन्वासांस्यपहरद्बली ॥०४-६४-२८॥
tat-praṇudya rathānīkaṃ siṃhasaṃhanano yuvā। kurūṃs tān prahasan rājan vāsāṃsy apaharad balī ॥04-64-28॥

(That lion-built young man, having driven away the chariot-army, laughing at the Kurus, O king, the strong one took away their garments.)

एकेन तेन वीरेण षड्रथाः परिवारिताः। शार्दूलेनेव मत्तेन मृगास्तृणचरा वने ॥०४-६४-२९॥
ekena tena vīreṇa ṣaḍrathāḥ parivāritāḥ। śārdūleneva mattena mṛgās tṛṇacarā vane ॥04-64-29॥
[एकेन (ekena) - by one; by the one; तेन (tena) - by him; by that; वीरेण (vīreṇa) - by the hero; षड्रथाः (ṣaḍrathāḥ) - six chariots; six warriors on chariots; परिवारिताः (parivāritāḥ) - encircled; surrounded; शार्दूलेन (śārdūlena) - by a tiger; इव (iva) - like; as; मत्तेन (mattena) - by the intoxicated; by the furious; मृगाः (mṛgāḥ) - deer; wild animals; तृणचराः (tṛṇacarāḥ) - grazing on grass; grass-eaters; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(By one, by that hero, six chariots were surrounded, like by a tiger, by the intoxicated, the deer grazing on grass in the forest.)
By that one hero, six chariots were surrounded, just as deer that graze on grass in the forest are by an intoxicated tiger. (04-64-29)

kva sa vīro mahābāhur devaputro mahāyaśāḥ। yo me dhanam avājaiṣīt kurubhir grastam āhave ॥04-64-30॥

antardhānaṃ gatastāta devaputraḥ pratāpavān। sa tu śvo vā paraśvo vā manye prādurbhaviṣyati॥04-64-32॥
[अन्तर्धानम् (antardhānam) - disappearance; dissolution; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; has attained; तात (tāta) - dear father; respected one; देवपुत्रः (devaputraḥ) - son of a god; divine son; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; eminent; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; वा (vā) - or; परश्वः (paraśvaḥ) - the day after tomorrow; वा (vā) - or; मन्ये (manye) - I think; I believe; प्रादुर्भविष्यति (prādurbhaviṣyati) - will appear; will manifest;]
(Disappearance has gone, dear father, the divine son, powerful. He, but, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow or, I think, will appear.)
Dear father, the powerful son of a god has disappeared. But I think he will appear either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. (04-64-32)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

evam ākhyāyamānaṃ tu channaṃ satreṇa pāṇḍavam। vasantaṃ tatra nājñāsīdviraāṭaḥ pārtham arjunam॥04-64-33॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आख्यायमानम् (ākhyāyamānam) - being narrated; तु (tu) - but; छन्नम् (channam) - hidden; सत्रेण (satreṇa) - by vow (of incognito); पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava; वसन्तम् (vasantam) - residing; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; अज्ञासीद् (ajñāsīt) - (he) knew; विराटः (virāṭaḥ) - Virāṭa; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna;]
(Thus, being narrated but the Pāṇḍava hidden by the vow, residing there, Virāṭa did not know Pārtha Arjuna.)
Thus, while this was being recounted, although the Pāṇḍava was concealed by his vow and residing there, King Virāṭa did not recognize Pārtha, that is, Arjuna. (04-64-33)
ततः पार्थोऽभ्यनुज्ञातो विराटेन महात्मना। प्रददौ तानि वासांसि विराटदुहितुः स्वयम् ॥०४-६४-३४॥
tataḥ pārtho'bhyanugñāto virāṭena mahātmanā। pradadau tāni vāsāṃsi virāṭaduhituḥ svayam ॥04-64-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; विराटेन (virāṭena) - by Virāṭa; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - the great-souled; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; तानि (tāni) - those; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; विराटदुहितुः (virāṭaduhituḥ) - of Virāṭa's daughter; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(Then Pārtha, having been permitted by the great-souled Virāṭa, himself gave those garments of Virāṭa's daughter.)
Then Arjuna, having been allowed by King Virāṭa, personally handed over those garments belonging to Virāṭa's daughter. (04-64-34)
उत्तरा तु महार्हाणि विविधानि तनूनि च। प्रतिगृह्याभवत्प्रीता तानि वासांसि भामिनी ॥०४-६४-३५॥
uttarā tu mahārhāṇi vividhāni tanūni ca। pratigṛhyābhavatprītā tāni vāsāṃsi bhāminī ॥04-64-35॥
[उत्तरा (uttarā) - Uttara; [proper noun, feminine]; तु (tu) - but; महार्हाणि (mahārhāṇi) - very precious; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; तनूनि (tanūni) - clothing; garments; च (ca) - and; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; she was; प्रीता (prītā) - pleased; delighted; तानि (tāni) - those; (refers back to garments); वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - clothes; garments; भामिनी (bhāminī) - the radiant lady;]
(Uttara but very precious various garments and having accepted became pleased those clothes the radiant lady.)
But Uttara, the radiant lady, having accepted those various and very precious garments, became pleased. (04-64-35)
मन्त्रयित्वा तु कौन्तेय उत्तरेण रहस्तदा। इतिकर्तव्यतां सर्वां राजन्यथ युधिष्ठिरे ॥०४-६४-३६॥
mantrayitvā tu kaunteya uttarēṇa rahastadā। itikartavyatāṃ sarvāṃ rājanya^atha yudhiṣṭhire ॥04-64-36॥
[मन्त्रयित्वा (mantrayitvā) - having consulted; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; उत्तरेण (uttarēṇa) - with Uttara; रहः (rahas) - in secret; तदा (tadā) - then; इतिकर्तव्यतां (itikartavyatām) - the course of action; सर्वां (sarvāṃ) - all; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - as; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - unto Yudhishthira;]
(Having consulted but, O son of Kunti, with Uttara in secret then, the entire course of action, O king, as unto Yudhishthira.)
But having consulted in secret with Uttara, O son of Kunti, the entire course of action was explained to Yudhishthira, O king. (04-64-36)
ततस्तथा तद्व्यदधाद्यथावत्पुरुषर्षभ। सह पुत्रेण मत्स्यस्य प्रहृष्टो भरतर्षभः ॥०४-६४-३७॥
tatas tathā tad vyadadhād yathāvat puruṣarṣabha. saha putreṇa matsyasya prahṛṣṭo bharatarṣabhaḥ ॥04-64-37॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तथा (tathā) - in that way; तत् (tat) - that; व्यदधात् (vyadadhāt) - placed; यथावत् (yathāvat) - appropriately; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; सह (saha) - together with; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - with (his) son; मत्यस्य (matsyasya) - of the king of the Matsyas; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; भरतर्षभः (bharatarṣabhaḥ) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Then thus that (he) placed appropriately, O best of men; together with (his) son, the joyful king of the Matsyas, O bull among the Bharatas.)
Then, O bull among the Bharatas, the joyful king of the Matsyas, together with his son, appropriately placed that (object), O best of men. (04-64-37)
