विराटस्य सभां गत्वा भूमिपालासनेष्वथ। निषेदुः पावकप्रख्याः सर्वे धिष्ण्येष्विवाग्नयः ॥०४-६५-३॥

(Of Virāṭa assembly having gone, on the seats of the kings then they sat, shining like fire, all, on the seats, as if fires.)
Having gone to Virāṭa's assembly, then all (the heroes), shining like fire, sat on the seats of the kings, just as fires (sit) on their hearths. (04-65-3)
तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु विराटः पृथिवीपतिः। आजगाम सभां कर्तुं राजकार्याणि सर्वशः ॥०४-६५-४॥
teṣu tatropaviṣṭeṣu virāṭaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ। ājagāma sabhāṁ kartuṁ rājakāryāṇi sarvaśaḥ॥04-65-4॥

(Among them, there, when (they) were seated, Virata, lord of the earth, arrived at the assembly to perform royal duties entirely.)

श्रीमतः पाण्डवान्दृष्ट्वा ज्वलतः पावकानिव। अथ मत्स्योऽब्रवीत्कङ्कं देवरूपमवस्थितम् ॥ मरुद्गणैरुपासीनं त्रिदशानामिवेश्वरम् ॥०४-६५-५॥
śrīmataḥ pāṇḍavān dṛṣṭvā jvalataḥ pāvakān iva। atha matsyo'bravīt kaṅkaṃ devarūpam avasthitam॥ marud-gaṇaiḥ upāsīnaṃ tridaśānām iva īśvaram॥ 04-65-5॥

(Having seen the splendid Pāṇḍavas, like blazing fires, then the Matsya (king) said to Kaṅka, standing with a divine form, seated with hosts of Maruts, like the lord of the gods.)
Seeing the illustrious Pāṇḍavas, blazing like fires, the king of the Matsyas then spoke to Kaṅka, who appeared divine and was attended by hosts of Maruts, like the lord of the gods. (4-65-5)
स किलाक्षातिवापस्त्वं सभास्तारो मया कृतः। अथ राजासने कस्मादुपविष्टोऽस्यलङ्कृतः ॥०४-६५-६॥
sa kilākṣātivāpastvaṃ sabhāstāro mayā kṛtaḥ। atha rājāsane kasmādupaviṣṭo'syalankṛtaḥ ॥04-65-6॥

(He indeed not having performed the sprinkling of consecration water, you, the installer of the assembly, were made by me. Then, why are you, adorned, seated on this royal seat?)
He indeed, not having performed the consecration, you who were made the presider over the assembly by me—then why are you, adorned, seated on this royal seat? (04-65-6)
परिहासेप्सया वाक्यं विराटस्य निशम्य तत्। स्मयमानोऽर्जुनो राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०४-६५-७॥

इन्द्रस्याप्यासनं राजन्नयमारोढुमर्हति। ब्रह्मण्यः श्रुतवांस्त्यागी यज्ञशीलो दृढव्रतः ॥०४-६५-८॥

(O King, even the throne of Indra, one devoted to brahman, learned, a renouncer, inclined to sacrifice, and firm in vows is worthy to ascend by conduct (policy).)
O King, even the throne of Indra can rightly be ascended, by one who is devoted to brahman, learned, a renouncer, practices sacrifice, and is steadfast in vows, through his conduct. (4-65-8)
अयं कुरूणामृषभः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। अस्य कीर्तिः स्थिता लोके सूर्यस्येवोद्यतः प्रभा ॥०४-६५-९॥
ayaṁ kurūṇām ṛṣabhaḥ kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। asya kīrtiḥ sthitā loke sūryasya-iva udyataḥ prabhā ॥04-65-9॥
[अयं (ayaṁ) - this; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; ऋषभः (ṛṣabhaḥ) - bull (eminent one); कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; अस्य (asya) - his; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; स्थिता (sthitā) - stands; लोके (loke) - in the world; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; इव (iva) - like; उद्यतः (udyataḥ) - risen; प्रभा (prabhā) - radiance;]
(This bull of the Kurus, the son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira—his fame stands in the world like the radiance of the risen sun.)
This illustrious son of Kuntī among the Kurus, Yudhiṣṭhira, his fame shines in the world like the brightness of the risen sun. (04-65-9)
संसरन्ति दिशः सर्वा यशсоऽस्य गभस्तयः। उदितस्येव सूर्यस्य तेजसोऽनु गभस्तयः ॥०४-६५-१०॥
saṃsaranti diśaḥ sarvā yaśaso'sya gabhastayaḥ। uditasyeva sūryasya tejaso'nu gabhastayaḥ ॥04-65-10॥
[संसरन्ति (saṃsaranti) - move about; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; यशसोऽस्य (yaśaso'sya) - of his fame; गभस्तयः (gabhastayaḥ) - rays; उदितस्येव (uditasya eva) - just as of the risen; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; तेजसोऽनु (tejaso'nu) - after the splendor; गभस्तयः (gabhastayaḥ) - rays;]
(The rays of his fame move about all the directions, just as, after the splendor of the risen sun, the rays.)
The rays of his fame spread in all directions, just as the rays follow the splendor of the risen sun. (04-65-10)
एनं दश सहस्राणि कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम्। अन्वयुः पृष्ठतो राजन्यावदध्यावसत्कुरून् ॥०४-६५-११॥
enaṁ daśa sahasrāṇi kuñjarāṇāṁ tarasvinām। anvayuḥ pṛṣṭhato rājanyāvadadhyāvasatkurūn ॥04-65-11॥

(This one, ten thousands of vigorous elephants followed from behind; the nobles dwelt among the Kurus.)

त्रिंशदेनं सहस्राणि रथाः काञ्चनमालिनः। सदश्वैरुपसम्पन्नाः पृष्ठतोऽनुययुः सदा ॥०४-६५-१२॥

एनं नित्यमुपासन्त कुरवः किङ्करा यथा। सर्वे च राजन्राजानो धनेश्वरमिवामराः ॥०४-६५-१४॥
enaṃ nityam upāsanta kuravaḥ kiṅkarā yathā। sarve ca rājan rājāno dhaneśvaram ivāmarāḥ ॥04-65-14॥
[एनम् (enam) - him; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; उपासन्त (upāsanta) - serve; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; किङ्कराः (kiṅkarāḥ) - servants; यथा (yathā) - as; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; धनश्वरम् (dhaneśvaram) - lord of wealth; इव (iva) - like; अमराः (amarāḥ) - the immortals;]
(Him always serve the Kurus as servants; all, and O king, the kings (serve him) like the immortals the lord of wealth.)

एष सर्वान्महीपालान्करमाहारयत्तदा। वैश्यानिव महाराज विवशान्स्ववशानपि ॥०४-६५-१५॥
eṣaḥ sarvān mahīpālān karam āhārayat tadā। vaiśyān iva mahārāja vivaśān svavaśān api॥04-65-15॥

O great king, this man collected tribute from all the kings at that time, like merchants—both those who were powerless and those who were willing. (04-65-15)
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि स्नातकानां महात्मनाम्। उपजीवन्ति राजानमेनं सुचरितव्रतम् ॥०४-६५-१६॥
aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi snātakānāṃ mahātmanām। upajīvanti rājānam enaṃ sucaritavratam॥04-65-16॥
[अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि (aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi) - eighty-eight thousands; स्नातकानाम् (snātakānām) - of graduates; of initiated (students with completed studies); of learned men; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great souls; उपजीवन्ति (upajīvanti) - subsist; live upon; maintain themselves; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; एनम् (enam) - this; सुचरितव्रतम् (sucaritavratam) - of excellent conduct and vow; endowed with good character and discipline;]
(Eighty-eight thousands of graduates of great souls subsist on this king of excellent conduct and vow.)
Eighty-eight thousand learned and noble individuals depend upon this king, who is distinguished by virtuous conduct and vows. (04-65-16)
एष वृद्धाननाथांश्च व्यङ्गान्पङ्गूंश्च मानवान्। पुत्रवत्पालयामास प्रजा धर्मेण चाभिभो ॥०४-६५-१७॥
eṣa vṛddhān anāthān ca vyaṅgān paṅgūṁś ca mānavān। putravat pālayām āsa prajā dharmeṇa ca abhibho ॥04-65-17॥
[एष (eṣa) - he; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - the aged; अनाथान् (anāthān) - the destitute; च (ca) - and; व्यङ्गान् (vyaṅgān) - the disabled; पङ्गूंश्च (paṅgūṁś ca) - and the lame; मानवान् (mānavān) - men; पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like a son; पालयामास (pālayām āsa) - he protected; प्रजा (prajā) - subjects; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; च (ca) - and; अभिभो (abhibho) - O lord;]
(He the aged, the destitute, and the disabled, and the lame men, like a son, protected (his) subjects by righteousness and, O lord.)
He protected the aged, the destitute, the disabled, and the lame among men, caring for his subjects like a son, by righteousness, O lord. (04-65-17)
एष धर्मे दमे चैव क्रोधे चापि यतव्रतः। महाप्रसादो ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवादी च पार्थिवः ॥०४-६५-१८॥
eṣa dharme dame caiva krodhe cāpi yatavrataḥ. mahāprasādo brahmaṇyaḥ satyavādī ca pārthivaḥ ॥04-65-18॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (man); धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; दमे (dame) - in self-restraint; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; क्रोधे (krodhe) - in anger; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; यतव्रतः (yatavrataḥ) - one whose vows are controlled; महाप्रसादः (mahāprasādaḥ) - very gracious; ब्रह्मण्यः (brahmaṇyaḥ) - devoted to Brahman; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - truthful; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king;]
(This (man) in dharma, in self-restraint, and indeed in anger even, is one whose vows are controlled; very gracious; devoted to Brahman; truthful, and the king.)
This king is devoted to dharma, self-restraint, and even in anger is controlled in his vows; he is very gracious, devoted to Brahman, and a speaker of truth. (04-65-18)
श्रीप्रतापेन चैतस्य तप्यते स सुयोधनः। सगणः सह कर्णेन सौबलेनापि वा विभुः ॥०४-६५-१९॥
śrī-pratāpena ca etasya tapyate saḥ suyodhanaḥ। sa-gaṇaḥ saha karṇena saubalenāpi vā vibhuḥ॥04-65-19॥
[श्रीप्रतापेन (śrī-pratāpena) - by the radiance of majesty; च (ca) - and; एतस्य (etasya) - of this (one); तप्यते (tapyate) - is tormented; स (saḥ) - he; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana; सगणः (sa-gaṇaḥ) - with his retinue; सह (saha) - together with; कर्णेन (karṇena) - with Karṇa; सौबलेन (saubalena) - with (the son of) Subala (Śakuni); अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the lord;]
(By the radiance of majesty and of this (one), he, Suyodhana, is tormented; with his retinue, together with Karṇa, also with (the son of) Subala or the lord.)
Suyodhana is tormented by the majesty and prowess of this one, along with his retinue, together with Karṇa and with the son of Subala, or even the lord himself. (04-65-19)
न शक्यन्ते ह्यस्य गुणाः प्रसङ्ख्यातुं नरेश्वर। एष धर्मपरो नित्यमानृशंस्यश्च पाण्डवः ॥०४-६५-२०॥
na śakyante hy asya guṇāḥ prasaṅkhyātuṃ nareśvara। eṣa dharmaparo nityam ānṛśaṃsyaś ca pāṇḍavaḥ ॥04-65-20॥

O king of men, his qualities indeed cannot be fully enumerated. This Pāṇḍava is ever devoted to dharma and always compassionate. (04-65-20)
एवंयुक्तो महाराजः पाण्डवः पार्थिवर्षभः। कथं नार्हति राजार्हमासनं पृथिवीपतिः ॥०४-६५-२१॥
evaṃ yukto mahārājaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ pārthivarṣabhaḥ। kathaṃ nārhati rājārham āsanaṃ pṛthivīpatiḥ ॥04-65-21॥
[एवंयुक्तः (evaṃ-yuktaḥ) - thus engaged; महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - great king; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - descendant of Pandu; पार्थिवर्षभः (pārthiva-ṛṣabhaḥ) - bull among kings; कथम् (katham) - how; न (na) - not; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; राजार्हम् (rājārham) - worthy of a king; आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth;]
(Thus engaged, the great king, the descendant of Pandu, the bull among kings—how is the lord of the earth not worthy of the kingly seat?)
Thus occupied, the great king, the Pandava and best among kings—how could the lord of the earth not deserve a royal seat? (04-65-21)
