गते द्वारवतीं कृष्णे बलदेवे च माधवे। सह वृष्ण्यन्धकैः सर्वैर्भोजैश्च शतशस्तथा ॥५-७-१॥
gate dvāravatīṃ kṛṣṇe baladeve ca mādhave। saha vṛṣṇyandhakaiḥ sarvairbhojaiśca śataśastathā ॥5-7-1॥

Krishna, Balarama, and Madhava went to Dvaraka along with all the Vrishnis, Andhakas, and hundreds of Bhojas.
सर्वमागमयामास पाण्डवानां विचेष्टितम्। धृतराष्ट्रात्मजो राजा दूतैः प्रणिहितैश्चरैः ॥५-७-२॥
sarvamāgamayāmāsa pāṇḍavānāṃ viceṣṭitam। dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajo rājā dūtaiḥ praṇihitaiścaraiḥ ॥5-7-2॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आगमयामास (āgamayāmāsa) - caused to be known; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; विचेष्टितम् (viceṣṭitam) - activities; धृतराष्ट्रात्मजः (dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajaḥ) - son of Dhritarashtra; राजा (rājā) - king; दूतैः (dūtaiḥ) - by messengers; प्रणिहितैः (praṇihitaiḥ) - deployed; चरैः (caraiḥ) - by spies;]
(The son of Dhritarashtra, the king, caused all the activities of the Pandavas to be known by messengers and spies deployed.)
The king, son of Dhritarashtra, had all the activities of the Pandavas reported to him through messengers and spies.
स श्रुत्वा माधवं यातं सदश्वैरनिलोपमैः। बलेन नातिमहता द्वारकामभ्ययात्पुरीम् ॥५-७-३॥
sa śrutvā mādhavaṃ yātaṃ sadaśvairanilopamaiḥ। balena nātimahatā dvārakāmabhyayātpurīm ॥5-7-3॥
[स (sa) - he; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; माधवम् (mādhavam) - Madhava; यातम् (yātam) - gone; सदश्वैः (sadaśvaiḥ) - with horses; अनिलोपमैः (anilopamaiḥ) - like the wind; बलेन (balena) - with force; नातिमहता (nātimahatā) - not very great; द्वारकाम् (dvārakām) - to Dvaraka; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; पुरीम् (purīm) - city;]
(He, having heard that Madhava had gone with horses like the wind, approached the city of Dvaraka with not very great force.)
Upon hearing that Madhava had departed with horses as swift as the wind, he approached the city of Dvaraka with a modest force.
तमेव दिवसं चापि कौन्तेयः पाण्डुनन्दनः। आनर्तनगरीं रम्यां जगामाशु धनञ्जयः ॥५-७-४॥
tameva divasaṃ cāpi kaunteyaḥ pāṇḍunandanaḥ। ānartanagarīṃ ramyāṃ jagāmāśu dhanañjayaḥ ॥5-7-4॥
[तम् (tam) - that; एव (eva) - only; दिवसम् (divasam) - day; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; पाण्डुनन्दनः (pāṇḍunandanaḥ) - descendant of Pandu; आनर्तनगरीम् (ānartanagarīm) - to the city of Anarta; रम्याम् (ramyām) - beautiful; जगाम (jagāma) - went; आशु (āśu) - quickly; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya;]
(On that very day, the son of Kunti, descendant of Pandu, Dhananjaya quickly went to the beautiful city of Anarta.)
On that same day, Arjuna, the son of Kunti and descendant of Pandu, swiftly traveled to the enchanting city of Anarta.
तौ यात्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रौ द्वारकां कुरुनन्दनौ। सुप्तं ददृशतुः कृष्णं शयानं चोपजग्मतुः ॥५-७-५॥
tau yātvā puruṣavyāghrau dvārakāṃ kurunandanau। suptaṃ dadṛśatuḥ kṛṣṇaṃ śayānaṃ copajagmatuhu ॥5-7-5॥
[तौ (tau) - they; (dual) यात्वा (yātvā) - having gone; पुरुषव्याघ्रौ (puruṣavyāghrau) - tiger among men; (dual) द्वारकां (dvārakāṃ) - to Dvaraka; कुरुनन्दनौ (kurunandanau) - descendants of Kuru; (dual) सुप्तं (suptaṃ) - sleeping; ददृशतुः (dadṛśatuḥ) - saw; (dual) कृष्णं (kṛṣṇaṃ) - Krishna; शयानं (śayānaṃ) - lying down; च (ca) - and; उपजग्मतुः (upajagmatuhu) - approached; (dual);]
(They, the tigers among men, the descendants of Kuru, having gone to Dvaraka, saw Krishna sleeping and lying down, and approached him.)
The two heroes, the best among men and descendants of Kuru, went to Dvaraka and saw Krishna asleep. They approached him as he lay there.
ततः शयाने गोविन्दे प्रविवेश सुयोधनः। उच्छीर्षतश्च कृष्णस्य निषसाद वरासने ॥५-७-६॥
tataḥ śayāne govinde praviveśa suyodhanaḥ। ucchīrṣataśca kṛṣṇasya niṣasāda varāsane ॥5-7-6॥

(Then, as Govinda was lying down, Suyodhana entered and sat down on the excellent seat above Krishna's head.)
Then, when Govinda was resting, Suyodhana entered and took a seat on the distinguished chair at Krishna's head.
ततः किरीटी तस्यानु प्रविवेश महामनाः। पश्चार्धे च स कृष्णस्य प्रह्वोऽतिष्ठत्कृताञ्जलिः ॥५-७-७॥
tataḥ kirīṭī tasyānu praviveśa mahāmanāḥ। paścārdhe ca sa kṛṣṇasya prahvo'tiṣṭhatkṛtāñjaliḥ ॥5-7-7॥

(Then the one with a crown, great-minded, entered after him. In the latter half, he stood humbly with folded hands before Krishna.)

प्रतिबुद्धः स वार्ष्णेयो ददर्शाग्रे किरीटिनम्। स तयोः स्वागतं कृत्वा यथार्हं प्रतिपूज्य च ॥ तदागमनजं हेतुं पप्रच्छ मधुसूदनः ॥५-७-८॥

(Awakened, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi saw the crowned one in front. Having welcomed and honored them as deserved, Madhusūdana asked the reason for their arrival.)
Upon awakening, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi saw the crowned one before him. He welcomed and honored them appropriately, and then Madhusūdana inquired about the reason for their visit.
ततो दुर्योधनः कृष्णमुवाच प्रहसन्निव। विग्रहेऽस्मिन्भवान्साह्यं मम दातुमिहार्हति ॥५-७-९॥
tato duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇam uvāca prahasann iva। vigrahe'smin bhavān sāhyaṃ mama dātum ihārhati ॥5-7-9॥

(Then Duryodhana, smiling as if, said to Krishna: "In this conflict, you deserve to give my assistance here.")

समं हि भवतः सख्यं मयि चैवार्जुनेऽपि च। तथा सम्बन्धकं तुल्यमस्माकं त्वयि माधव ॥५-७-१०॥
samaṁ hi bhavataḥ sakhyaṁ mayi caivārjune'pi ca। tathā sambandhakaṁ tulyam asmākaṁ tvayi mādhava ॥5-7-10॥
[समम् (samam) - equal; हि (hi) - indeed; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; मयि (mayi) - in me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; अर्जुने (arjune) - in Arjuna; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; सम्बन्धकम् (sambandhakam) - relationship; तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava;]
(Indeed, your friendship is equal in me and certainly in Arjuna also; thus, the relationship is equal between us and you, O Mādhava.)
Indeed, your friendship is equally shared with me and Arjuna; thus, our relationship with you, O Mādhava, is the same.
अहं चाभिगतः पूर्वं त्वामद्य मधुसूदन। पूर्वं चाभिगतं सन्तो भजन्ते पूर्वसारिणः ॥५-७-११॥
ahaṁ cābhigataḥ pūrvaṁ tvāmadya madhusūdana। pūrvaṁ cābhigataṁ santo bhajante pūrvasāriṇaḥ ॥5-7-11॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; च (ca) - and; अभिगतः (abhigataḥ) - approached; पूर्वं (pūrvaṁ) - before; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; पूर्वं (pūrvaṁ) - before; च (ca) - and; अभिगतं (abhigataṁ) - approached; सन्तः (santaḥ) - saints; भजन्ते (bhajante) - worship; पूर्वसारिणः (pūrvasāriṇaḥ) - those who follow the ancient path;]
(I and approached before you today, Madhusudana. Before, approached saints worship those who follow the ancient path.)
I have approached you first today, O Madhusudana. Previously, the saints who follow the ancient path have also approached and worshipped.
त्वं च श्रेष्ठतमो लोके सतामद्य जनार्दन। सततं संमतश्चैव सद्वृत्तमनुपालय ॥५-७-१२॥
tvaṁ ca śreṣṭhatamo loke satāmadya janārdana। satataṁ saṁmataścaiva sadvṛttamanu pālaya ॥5-7-12॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; च (ca) - and; श्रेष्ठतमः (śreṣṭhatamaḥ) - the best; लोके (loke) - in the world; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; अद्य (adya) - today; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; सततं (satatam) - always; संमतः (saṁmataḥ) - respected; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सद्वृत्तम् (sadvṛttam) - good conduct; अनुपालय (anu pālaya) - maintain; ॥५-७-१२॥ (॥5-7-12॥) - (verse number);]
(You, O Janardana, are the best in the world of the virtuous today; always respected indeed, maintain good conduct.)

भवानभिगतः पूर्वमत्र मे नास्ति संशयः। दृष्टस्तु प्रथमं राजन्मया पार्थो धनञ्जयः ॥५-७-१३॥
bhavānabhigataḥ pūrvamatra me nāsti saṃśayaḥ। dṛṣṭastu prathamaṃ rājanmayā pārtho dhanañjayaḥ ॥5-7-13॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; अभिगतः (abhigataḥ) - approached; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; अत्र (atra) - here; मे (me) - my; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; तु (tu) - but; प्रथमम् (prathamam) - first; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मया (mayā) - by me; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya;]
(You have approached here before, my doubt is not. But first seen by me, O king, was Arjuna, Dhananjaya.)
There is no doubt that you have come here before. However, the first person I saw, O king, was Arjuna, the conqueror of wealth.
तव पूर्वाभिगमनात्पूर्वं चाप्यस्य दर्शनात्। साहाय्यमुभयोरेव करिष्यामि सुयोधन ॥५-७-१४॥
tava pūrvābhigamanātpūrvaṃ cāpyasya darśanāt। sāhāyyamubhayoreva kariṣyāmi suyodhana ॥5-7-14॥

प्रवारणं तु बालानां पूर्वं कार्यमिति श्रुतिः। तस्मात्प्रवारणं पूर्वमर्हः पार्थो धनञ्जयः ॥५-७-१५॥
pravāraṇaṃ tu bālānāṃ pūrvaṃ kāryamiti śrutiḥ। tasmātpravāraṇaṃ pūrvamarhaḥ pārtho dhanañjayaḥ ॥5-7-15॥

(The invitation for the young should be done first, thus says the scripture. Therefore, Arjuna, the worthy Dhananjaya, should be invited first.)

मत्संहननतुल्यानां गोपानामर्बुदं महत्। नारायणा इति ख्याताः सर्वे सङ्ग्रामयोधिनः ॥५-७-१६॥
matsaṁhananatulyānāṁ gopānāmarbudaṁ mahat। nārāyaṇā iti khyātāḥ sarve saṅgrāmayodhinaḥ ॥5-7-16॥
[मत्संहननतुल्यानां (matsaṁhananatulyānāṁ) - equal to the strength of a fish; गोपानाम् (gopānām) - of cowherds; अर्बुदं (arbudaṁ) - a great number; महत् (mahat) - great; नारायणा (nārāyaṇā) - Nārāyaṇa; इति (iti) - thus; ख्याताः (khyātāḥ) - known; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सङ्ग्रामयोधिनः (saṅgrāmayodhinaḥ) - warriors;]
(A great number of cowherds, equal to the strength of a fish, known as Nārāyaṇa, all warriors.)
A vast number of cowherds, renowned as Nārāyaṇa, were all warriors, possessing strength comparable to that of a fish.
ते वा युधि दुराधर्षा भवन्त्वेकस्य सैनिकाः। अयुध्यमानः सङ्ग्रामे न्यस्तशस्त्रोऽहमेकतः ॥५-७-१७॥
te vā yudhi durādharṣā bhavantvekasy sainikāḥ। ayudhyamānaḥ saṅgrāme nyastaśastro'hamekataḥ ॥5-7-17॥

(They or the invincible soldiers in battle may become of one; not fighting in battle, weaponless, I alone.)

(O son of Pritha, choose either of the two which is more agreeable to you. You are indeed the most excellent according to duty.)

evamuktastu kṛṣṇena kuntīputro dhanañjayaḥ। ayudhyamānaṃ saṅgrāme varayāmāsa keśavam ॥5-7-19॥

सहस्राणां सहस्रं तु योधानां प्राप्य भारत। कृष्णं चापहृतं ज्ञात्वा सम्प्राप परमां मुदम् ॥५-७-२०॥
sahasrāṇāṃ sahasraṃ tu yodhānāṃ prāpya bhārata। kṛṣṇaṃ cāpahṛtaṃ jñātvā samprāpa paramāṃ mudam ॥5-7-20॥

(Having obtained a thousand of thousands of warriors, O Bharata, and knowing that Krishna was taken away, attained supreme joy.)

निगृह्योक्तो हृषीकेशस्त्वदर्थं कुरुनन्दन। मया सम्बन्धकं तुल्यमिति राजन्पुनः पुनः ॥५-७-२४॥

गते दुर्योधने कृष्णः किरीटिनमथाब्रवीत्। अयुध्यमानः कां बुद्धिमास्थायाहं त्वया वृतः ॥५-७-३१॥

(When Duryodhana had gone, Krishna said to Arjuna, "Not fighting, what intention have I taken, being chosen by you?")
After Duryodhana departed, Krishna asked Arjuna why he chose him, knowing he would not fight.

भवांस्तु कीर्तिमाँल्लोके तद्यशस्त्वां गमिष्यति। यशसा चाहमप्यर्थी तस्मादसि मया वृतः ॥५-७-३३॥
bhavāṁstu kīrtimāṁlloke tadyaśastvāṁ gamiṣyati। yaśasā cāhamapyarthī tasmādasi mayā vṛtaḥ ॥5-7-33॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; तु (tu) - but; कीर्तिमान् (kīrtimān) - famous; लोके (loke) - in the world; तत् (tat) - that; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will go; यशसा (yaśasā) - by fame; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; अर्थी (arthī) - desirous; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; मया (mayā) - by me; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen;]
(You, however, are famous in the world; that fame will go to you. By fame, I am also desirous; therefore, you are chosen by me.)
You are renowned in the world, and that fame will reach you. I too desire fame, and that is why I have chosen you.
सारथ्यं तु त्वया कार्यमिति मे मानसं सदा। चिररात्रेप्सितं कामं तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ॥५-७-३४॥
sārathyaṃ tu tvayā kāryamiti me mānasaṃ sadā। cirarātrepsitaṃ kāmaṃ tadbhavānkartumarhati ॥5-7-34॥
[सारथ्यम् (sārathyam) - charioteership; तु (tu) - but; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मानसम् (mānasam) - mind; सदा (sadā) - always; चिररात्र (cirarātra) - long-desired; इप्सितम् (ipsitam) - wished; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; तत् (tad) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हति (arhati) - ought to;]
(Charioteership, however, by you is to be done, thus my mind always. Long-desired wish, that you ought to do.)

(This is appropriate, O son of Pritha, that you compete with me; I will do your charioteering; may your desire be fulfilled.)
O son of Pritha, it is fitting that you compete with me. I shall be your charioteer; may your wish be granted.

(Thus, joyful Arjuna, together with Krishna, then surrounded by the best of the Dasharhas, came again to Yudhishthira.)
Thus, a joyful Arjuna, accompanied by Krishna and surrounded by the best of the Dasharhas, returned once more to Yudhishthira.
