Bṛhaspati spoke:
त्वमग्ने सर्वदेवानां मुखं त्वमसि हव्यवाट्। त्वमन्तः सर्वभूतानां गूढश्चरसि साक्षिवत् ॥५-१६-१॥
tvamagne sarvadevānāṃ mukhaṃ tvamasi havyavāṭ। tvamantaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ gūḍhaścarasi sākṣivat ॥5-16-1॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; अग्ने (agne) - O Agni; सर्वदेवानाम् (sarvadevānām) - of all gods; मुखम् (mukham) - mouth; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; हव्यवाट् (havyavāṭ) - carrier of offerings; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अन्तः (antaḥ) - inside; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; गूढः (gūḍhaḥ) - hidden; चरसि (carasi) - move; साक्षिवत् (sākṣivat) - as a witness;]
(You, O Agni, are the mouth of all gods; you are the carrier of offerings. You move hidden inside all beings as a witness.)

(The poets say you are one; they also say you are threefold again. If this world, abandoned by you, O Fire, it would immediately perish.)
The poets describe you as singular, yet also as threefold. If you were to abandon this world, O Fire, it would instantly be destroyed.
कृत्वा तुभ्यं नमो विप्राः स्वकर्मविजितां गतिम्। गच्छन्ति सह पत्नीभिः सुतैरपि च शाश्वतीम् ॥५-१६-३॥
kṛtvā tubhyaṃ namo viprāḥ svakarmavijitāṃ gatim। gacchanti saha patnībhiḥ sutairapi ca śāśvatīm ॥5-16-3॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - to you; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; स्वकर्मविजिताम् (svakarmavijitām) - conquered by own actions; गतिम् (gatim) - path; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; सह (saha) - with; पत्नीभिः (patnībhiḥ) - wives; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - sons; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal;]
(Having done salutation to you, O brāhmaṇas, they go to the path conquered by their own actions, along with their wives and sons, also to the eternal.)
After offering salutations to you, O brāhmaṇas, they proceed on the path earned by their own deeds, accompanied by their wives and sons, towards the eternal.
त्वमेवाग्ने हव्यवाहस्त्वमेव परमं हविः। यजन्ति सत्रैस्त्वामेव यज्ञैश्च परमाध्वरे ॥५-१६-४॥

(You indeed, O Agni, are the carrier of offerings, you indeed are the supreme offering. They worship you with sacrifices and rituals in the supreme sacrifice.)
O Agni, you are the one who carries the offerings and are the ultimate offering yourself. People worship you with sacrifices and rituals in the highest form of sacrifice.
सृष्ट्वा लोकांस्त्रीनिमान्हव्यवाह; प्राप्ते काले पचसि पुनः समिद्धः। सर्वस्यास्य भुवनस्य प्रसूति; स्त्वमेवाग्ने भवसि पुनः प्रतिष्ठा ॥५-१६-५॥
sṛṣṭvā lokāṃstrīnimānhavyavāha; prāpte kāle pacasi punaḥ samiddhaḥ। sarvasyāsya bhuvanasya prasūti; tvamevāgne bhavasi punaḥ pratiṣṭhā ॥5-16-5॥
[सृष्ट्वा (sṛṣṭvā) - having created; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; इमान् (imān) - these; हव्यवाह (havyavāha) - O carrier of oblations; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when arrived; काले (kāle) - time; पचसि (pacasi) - you cook; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - kindled; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; अस्य (asya) - this; भुवनस्य (bhuvanasya) - world; प्रसूति (prasūti) - source; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; अग्ने (agne) - O Agni; भवसि (bhavasi) - become; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - foundation;]
(Having created these three worlds, O carrier of oblations, when the time arrives, you cook again, kindled. You indeed, O Agni, become the source and foundation of all this world again.)

त्वामग्ने जलदानाहुर्विद्युतश्च त्वमेव हि। दहन्ति सर्वभूतानि त्वत्तो निष्क्रम्य हायनाः ॥५-१६-६॥

(They say you, O Agni, are the clouds and indeed the lightning. All beings burn, emerging from you, for years.)

त्वय्यापो निहिताः सर्वास्त्वयि सर्वमिदं जगत्। न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किञ्चित्त्रिषु लोकेषु पावक ॥५-१६-७॥
tvayyāpo nihitāḥ sarvāstvayi sarvamidaṃ jagat। na te'styaviditaṃ kiñcittriṣu lokeṣu pāvaka ॥5-16-7॥

एवं स्तुतो हव्यवाहो भगवान्कविरुत्तमः। बृहस्पतिमथोवाच प्रीतिमान्वाक्यमुत्तमम् ॥ दर्शयिष्यामि ते शक्रं सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥५-१६-९॥
evaṃ stuto havyavāho bhagavānkaviruttamaḥ। bṛhaspatimathovāca prītimānvākyamuttamam ॥ darśayiṣyāmi te śakraṃ satyametadbravīmi te ॥5-16-9॥

(Thus praised, Agni, the divine supreme sage, then said to Bṛhaspati, pleased, excellent words: "I will show you Indra, truly I say this to you.")

प्रविश्यापस्ततो वह्निः ससमुद्राः सपल्वलाः। आजगाम सरस्तच्च गूढो यत्र शतक्रतुः ॥५-१६-१०॥

[प्रविश्य (praviśya) - entering; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; ससमुद्राः (sasamudrāḥ) - with oceans; सपल्वलाः (sapalvalāḥ) - with marshes; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; गूढः (gūḍhaḥ) - hidden; यत्र (yatra) - where; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra;]
(Entering the waters, then the fire with oceans and marshes came to that lake, hidden where Indra (was).)

अथ तत्रापि पद्मानि विचिन्वन्भरतर्षभ। अन्वपश्यत्स देवेन्द्रं बिसमध्यगतं स्थितम् ॥५-१६-११॥
atha tatrāpi padmāni vicinvannbharatarṣabha। anvapaśyatsa devendraṃ bisamadhyagataṃ sthitam ॥5-16-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; पद्मानि (padmāni) - lotuses; विचिन्वन् (vicinvan) - searching; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; अन्वपश्यत् (anvapaśyat) - saw; सः (saḥ) - he; देवेन्द्रम् (devendram) - Indra; बिसमध्यगतम् (bisamadhyagatam) - situated in the midst of the lotus fibers; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing;]
(Then, O best of the Bharatas, while searching for lotuses there, he saw Indra standing in the midst of the lotus fibers.)

शतक्रतो विवर्धस्व सर्वाञ्शत्रून्निषूदय। उत्तिष्ठ वज्रिन्सम्पश्य देवर्षींश्च समागतान् ॥५-१६-१५॥

(O great Indra, having slain the demons, the worlds were protected by you, O lord. Having reached the foam of waters, strengthened by Vishnu's energy, Vritra was slain by you formerly, O king of gods, O lord of the world.)

त्वं सर्वभूतेषु वरेण्य ईड्य; स्त्वया समं विद्यते नेह भूतम्। त्वया धार्यन्ते सर्वभूतानि शक्र; त्वं देवानां महिमानं चकर्थ ॥५-१६-१७॥

(You, among all beings, are most excellent and praiseworthy; by you, nothing equal exists here. By you, all beings are supported, O Indra; you performed the greatness of the gods.)

पाहि देवान्सलोकांश्च महेन्द्र बलमाप्नुहि। एवं संस्तूयमानश्च सोऽवर्धत शनैः शनैः ॥५-१६-१८॥
pāhi devānslokāṃśca mahendra balamāpnuhi। evaṃ saṃstūyamānaśca so'vardhata śanaiḥ śanaiḥ ॥5-16-18॥

(Protect the gods and the worlds, O great Indra, attain strength. Thus being praised, he grew slowly, slowly.)

(Assuming his own form, he became endowed with strength and said to the teacher, the god Bṛhaspati, who was present.)

किं कार्यमवशिष्टं वो हतस्त्वाष्ट्रो महासुरः। वृत्रश्च सुमहाकायो ग्रस्तुं लोकानियेष यः ॥५-१६-२०॥

King Nahuṣa, a human, empowered by the divine sages, has taken over the kingdom of the gods and is causing great distress to all of us.

kathaṁ nu nahuṣo rājyaṁ devānāṁ prāpa durlabham। tapasā kena vā yuktaḥ kiṁvīryo vā bṛhaspate ॥5-16-22॥

देवा भीताः शक्रमकामयन्त; त्वया त्यक्तं महदैन्द्रं पदं तत्। तदा देवाः पितरोऽथर्षयश्च; गन्धर्वसङ्घाश्च समेत्य सर्वे ॥५-१६-२३॥
devā bhītāḥ śakramakāmayanta; tvayā tyaktaṃ mahadaindraṃ padaṃ tat. tadā devāḥ pitaro'tharṣayaśca; gandharvasaṅghāśca sametya sarve ॥5-16-23॥

(Having gone there, they said to Nahusha, "O Indra, you be our king, the protector of the world." To them, Nahusha said, "I am not capable; be strengthened by penance and energy.")
After going there, they addressed Nahusha, saying, "O Indra, become our king and protector of the world." Nahusha replied to them, "I am not capable; strengthen yourselves through penance and energy."
एवमुक्तैर्वर्धितश्चापि देवै; राजाभवन्नहुषो घोरवीर्यः। त्रैलोक्ये च प्राप्य राज्यं तपस्विनः; कृत्वा वाहान्याति लोकान्दुरात्मा ॥५-१६-२५॥

(Thus encouraged by the words of the gods, King Nahuṣa of terrible strength became the ruler of the three worlds. Having obtained the kingdom of the ascetic, the wicked soul goes to the worlds, having made vehicles.)
Encouraged by the gods, King Nahuṣa, known for his terrible strength, became the ruler of the three worlds. After obtaining the kingdom of the ascetic, his wicked nature led him to travel to different worlds using vehicles.
तेजोहरं दृष्टिविषं सुघोरं; मा त्वं पश्येर्नहुषं वै कदाचित्। देवाश्च सर्वे नहुषं भयार्ता; न पश्यन्तो गूढरूपाश्चरन्ति ॥५-१६-२६॥
tejo-haraṁ dṛṣṭi-viṣaṁ sughoraṁ; mā tvaṁ paśyer-nahuṣaṁ vai kadācit। devāś-ca sarve nahuṣaṁ bhayārtā; na paśyanto gūḍha-rūpāś-caranti ॥5-16-26॥

te vai samāgamya mahendramūcu; rdiṣṭyā tvāṣṭro nihataścaiva vṛtraḥ। diṣṭyā ca tvāṃ kuśalinamakṣataṃ ca; paśyāmo vai nihatāriṃ ca śakra ॥5-16-28॥

(They indeed, having assembled, said to Mahendra: "Fortunately, Tvaṣṭra is slain and indeed Vritra. Fortunately, we see you safe and unharmed, and the enemy slain, O Shakra.")
Having gathered, they said to Mahendra: "It is fortunate that Tvaṣṭra and Vritra are slain. We are glad to see you safe and unharmed, and the enemy defeated, O Shakra."
स तान्यथावत्प्रतिभाष्य शक्रः; सञ्चोदयन्नहुषस्यान्तरेण। राजा देवानां नहुषो घोररूप; स्तत्र साह्यं दीयतां मे भवद्भिः ॥५-१६-२९॥
sa tānyathāvatpratibhāṣya śakraḥ; sañcodayannahuṣasyāntareṇa। rājā devānāṃ nahuṣo ghorarūpa; tatra sāhyaṃ dīyatāṃ me bhavadbhiḥ ॥5-16-29॥

(They said, Nahusha is of terrible form; his sight is poisonous, we fear, O god. If you, O king, defeat Nahusha, then indeed we deserve a share, O Indra.)

(Indra said, "Let you be the lord of waters; Yama and Kubera may attain the great consecration today with him; let us conquer the enemy Nahusha, the fierce-eyed.")
Indra declared, "You shall become the lord of waters; Yama and Kubera will receive the great consecration today alongside him; together, let us defeat the enemy Nahusha, who is fierce-eyed."
ततः शक्रं ज्वलनोऽप्याह भागं; प्रयच्छ मह्यं तव साह्यं करिष्ये। तमाह शक्रो भविताग्ने तवापि; ऐन्द्राग्नो वै भाग एको महाक्रतौ ॥५-१६-३२॥
tataḥ śakraṃ jvalano'pyāha bhāgaṃ; prayaccha mahyaṃ tava sāhyaṃ kariṣye. tamāha śakro bhavitāgne tavāpi; aindrāgno vai bhāga eko mahākratau ॥5-16-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; ज्वलनः (jvalanaḥ) - Agni; अपि (api) - also; आह (āha) - said; भागम् (bhāgam) - share; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; मह्यम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; तव (tava) - your; साह्यम् (sāhyam) - assistance; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I will do; तम् (tam) - to him; आह (āha) - said; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; अग्ने (agne) - O Agni; तव (tava) - your; अपि (api) - also; ऐन्द्राग्नः (aindrāgnaḥ) - Indra and Agni; वै (vai) - indeed; भागः (bhāgaḥ) - share; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; महाक्रतौ (mahākratau) - in the great sacrifice;]
(Then Agni also said to Indra, "Give me a share; I will assist you." Indra said to him, "O Agni, your share will also be one in the great sacrifice of Indra and Agni.")
Then Agni requested Indra for a share, promising his assistance. Indra assured Agni that he would indeed have a share in the great sacrifice, signifying the collaboration between Indra and Agni.
एवं सञ्चिन्त्य भगवान्महेन्द्रः पाकशासनः। कुबेरं सर्वयक्षाणां धनानां च प्रभुं तथा ॥५-१६-३३॥
evaṃ sañcintya bhagavānmahendraḥ pākaśāsanaḥ। kuberaṃ sarvayakṣāṇāṃ dhanānāṃ ca prabhuṃ tathā ॥5-16-33॥

vaivasvataṁ pitṝṇāṁ ca varuṇaṁ cāpyapāṁ tathā। ādhipatyaṁ dadau śakraḥ satkṛtya varadastadā ॥5-16-34॥
