न चेद्भागं कुरवोऽन्यत्र युद्धात्प्रयच्छन्ते तुभ्यमजातशत्रो। भैक्षचर्यामन्धकवृष्णिराज्ये श्रेयो मन्ये न तु युद्धेन राज्यम् ॥५-२७-२॥

(If the Kurus do not give you your share from the battle, O Ajatashatru, I think it is better to live a life of mendicancy in the kingdom of the Andhakas and Vrishnis, rather than to fight for the kingdom.)
O Ajatashatru, if the Kurus do not grant you your rightful share from the battle, I believe it is more honorable to live as a mendicant in the lands of the Andhakas and Vrishnis than to wage war for a kingdom.
अल्पकालं जीवितं यन्मनुष्ये; महास्रावं नित्यदुःखं चलं च। भूयश्च तद्वयसो नानुरूपं; तस्मात्पापं पाण्डव मा प्रसार्षीः ॥५-२७-३॥

(Life in humans is short-lived, with great flow, constant sorrow, and instability. Moreover, it is not appropriate for that age. Therefore, O Pandava, do not engage in sin.)
Human life is fleeting, filled with constant sorrow and instability. It is not suitable for one's age. Therefore, O Pandava, refrain from sinful actions.

(Indeed, the desire for wealth is binding here, O Partha; it is overcome by effort alone through righteousness. But he who chooses righteousness is wise; the greedy one is diminished due to pursuit of wealth.)

धर्मं कृत्वा कर्मणां तात मुख्यं; महाप्रतापः सवितेव भाति। हानेन धर्मस्य महीमपीमां; लब्ध्वा नरः सीदति पापबुद्धिः ॥५-२७-६॥

(Having performed duty, O dear, the chief of actions; great splendor shines like the sun. By loss of duty, even having obtained this earth, the evil-minded man sinks.)
O dear, by performing one's duty, one achieves the chief of actions and shines with great splendor like the sun. However, by neglecting duty, even if one gains the entire earth, an evil-minded person will ultimately fall.
वेदोऽधीतश्चरितं ब्रह्मचर्यं; यज्ञैरिष्टं ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च दत्तम्। परं स्थानं मन्यमानेन भूय; आत्मा दत्तो वर्षपूगं सुखेभ्यः ॥५-२७-७॥

(The Veda was studied, celibacy was practiced; sacrifices were performed and given to the Brahmins. Considering the supreme place, the self was given again for many years to pleasures.)

[सुखप्रिये (sukhapriye) - O lover of happiness; सेवमानः (sevamānaḥ) - serving; अतिवेलं (ativelaṁ) - excessively; योगाभ्यासे (yogābhyāse) - in the practice of yoga; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; करोति (karoti) - does; कर्म (karma) - action; वित्तक्षये (vittakṣaye) - in the loss of wealth; हीनसुखः (hīnasukhaḥ) - deprived of happiness; अतिवेलं (ativelaṁ) - excessively; दुःखं (duḥkhaṁ) - suffering; शेते (śete) - sleeps; कामवेगप्रणुन्नः (kāmavegapraṇunnaḥ) - driven by the force of desire;]
(O lover of happiness, serving excessively; who does not perform action in the practice of yoga. In the loss of wealth, deprived of happiness excessively; sleeps suffering, driven by the force of desire.)

एवं पुनरर्थचर्याप्रसक्तो; हित्वा धर्मं यः प्रकरोत्यधर्मम्। अश्रद्दधत्परलोकाय मूढो; हित्वा देहं तप्यते प्रेत्य मन्दः ॥५-२७-९॥

(Thus, again attached to the pursuit of wealth, abandoning righteousness, who does unrighteousness, without faith for the other world, foolish, abandoning the body, suffers after death, dull-witted.)
Thus, a person who is attached to the pursuit of wealth, abandoning righteousness and engaging in unrighteousness without faith in the afterlife, is foolish and suffers after death, having abandoned the body.
न कर्मणां विप्रणाशोऽस्त्यमुत्र; पुण्यानां वाप्यथ वा पापकानाम्। पूर्वं कर्तुर्गच्छति पुण्यपापं; पश्चात्त्वेतदनुयात्येव कर्ता ॥५-२७-१०॥
na karmaṇāṃ vipraṇāśo'styamutra; puṇyānāṃ vāpyatha vā pāpakānām। pūrvaṃ karturgacchati puṇyapāpaṃ; paścāttvetadanuyātyeva kartā ॥5-27-10॥

(There is no destruction of actions in the other world; neither of good deeds nor of bad deeds. First, the good and bad deeds go to the doer; afterwards, the doer indeed follows this.)
In the other world, actions do not perish; neither good nor bad deeds are destroyed. Initially, the results of good and bad deeds go to the doer, and subsequently, the doer follows these results.
न्यायोपेतं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो यदन्नं; श्रद्धापूतं गन्धरसोपपन्नम्। अन्वाहार्येषूत्तमदक्षिणेषु; तथारूपं कर्म विख्यायते ते ॥५-२७-११॥
nyāyopetaṃ brāhmaṇebhyo yadannaṃ; śraddhāpūtaṃ gandharasopapannam। anvāhāryeṣūttamadakṣiṇeṣu; tathārūpaṃ karma vikhyāyate te ॥5-27-11॥
[न्यायोपेतं (nyāyopetam) - endowed with justice; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brahmins; यत् (yat) - which; अन्नं (annam) - food; श्रद्धापूतं (śraddhāpūtam) - purified by faith; गन्धरसोपपन्नम् (gandharasopapannam) - endowed with fragrance and taste; अन्वाहार्येषु (anvāhāryeṣu) - in the sacrifices; उत्तमदक्षिणेषु (uttamadakṣiṇeṣu) - with excellent gifts; तथारूपं (tathārūpam) - such; कर्म (karma) - act; विख्यायते (vikhyāyate) - is known; ते (te) - your;]
(The food which is endowed with justice, given to the Brahmins, purified by faith, endowed with fragrance and taste, in the sacrifices with excellent gifts, such an act is known as yours.)
The act of offering food, which is just, given to Brahmins, purified by faith, and endowed with fragrance and taste, in sacrifices with excellent gifts, is recognized as your deed.
इह क्षेत्रे क्रियते पार्थ कार्यं; न वै किञ्चिद्विद्यते प्रेत्य कार्यम्। कृतं त्वया पारलोक्यं च कार्यं; पुण्यं महत्सद्भिरनुप्रशस्तम् ॥५-२७-१२॥
iha kṣetre kriyate pārtha kāryaṁ; na vai kiñcidvidyate pretya kāryam। kṛtaṁ tvayā pāralokyaṁ ca kāryaṁ; puṇyaṁ mahatsadbhiranupraśastam ॥5-27-12॥
[इह (iha) - here; क्षेत्रे (kṣetre) - in the field; क्रियते (kriyate) - is done; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - duty; न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; कार्यं (kāryam) - duty; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पारलोक्यं (pāralokyaṁ) - for the other world; च (ca) - and; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - duty; पुण्यं (puṇyaṁ) - virtue; महत् (mahat) - great; सद्भिः (sadbhih) - by the good; अनुप्रशस्तम् (anuprashastam) - praised;]
(Here in the field, O son of Pritha, duty is performed; indeed, nothing exists after death as duty. What has been done by you for the other world is duty; great virtue is praised by the good.)
In this field, O Arjuna, duties are performed, and nothing remains as duty after death. The actions you have done for the afterlife are considered duties, and great virtues are praised by the wise.
जहाति मृत्युं च जरां भयं च; न क्षुत्पिपासे मनसश्चाप्रियाणि। न कर्तव्यं विद्यते तत्र किं चि; दन्यत्र वै इन्द्रियप्रीणनार्थात् ॥५-२७-१३॥
jahāti mṛtyuṃ ca jarāṃ bhayaṃ ca; na kṣutpipāse manasaścāpriyāṇi। na kartavyaṃ vidyate tatra kiṃ ci; danyatra vai indriyaprīṇanārthāt ॥5-27-13॥
[जहाति (jahāti) - abandons; मृत्यं (mṛtyuṃ) - death; च (ca) - and; जरां (jarāṃ) - old age; भयं (bhayaṃ) - fear; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; क्षुत्पिपासे (kṣutpipāse) - hunger and thirst; मनसश्च (manasaśca) - and of the mind; अप्रियाणि (apriyāṇi) - unpleasant things; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यं (kartavyaṃ) - duty; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; तत्र (tatra) - there; किं (kiṃ) - anything; चि (ci) - at all; दन्यत्र (danyatra) - except; वै (vai) - indeed; इन्द्रियप्रीणनार्थात् (indriyaprīṇanārthāt) - for the satisfaction of the senses;]
(Abandons death and old age and fear; not hunger and thirst and unpleasant things of the mind. There exists no duty at all except indeed for the satisfaction of the senses.)
One transcends death, old age, and fear; neither hunger nor thirst nor unpleasant things of the mind affect them. There is no duty except for the satisfaction of the senses.
एवंरूपं कर्मफलं नरेन्द्र; मात्रावता हृदयस्य प्रियेण। स क्रोधजं पाण्डव हर्षजं च; लोकावुभौ मा प्रहासीश्चिराय ॥५-२७-१४॥
evaṁrūpaṁ karmaphalaṁ narendra; mātrāvatā hṛdayasya priyeṇa। sa krodhajaṁ pāṇḍava harṣajaṁ ca; lokāvubhau mā prahāsīścirāya ॥5-27-14॥
[एवंरूपं (evaṁrūpaṁ) - of such form; कर्मफलं (karmaphalaṁ) - fruit of action; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; मात्रावता (mātrāvatā) - with measure; हृदयस्य (hṛdayasya) - of the heart; प्रियेण (priyeṇa) - by the beloved; स (sa) - he; क्रोधजं (krodhajaṁ) - born of anger; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pandu; हर्षजं (harṣajaṁ) - born of joy; च (ca) - and; लोकावुभौ (lokāvubhau) - both worlds; मा (mā) - do not; प्रहासीः (prahāsīḥ) - abandon; चिराय (cirāya) - for long;]
(O king, the fruit of action of such form, with measure by the beloved of the heart. O son of Pandu, he born of anger and born of joy; do not abandon both worlds for long.)
O King, the results of actions are of such a nature, measured by the beloved of the heart. O son of Pandu, do not forsake both worlds, those born of anger and joy, for a long time.
अन्तं गत्वा कर्मणां या प्रशंसा; सत्यं दमश्चार्जवमानृशंस्यम्। अश्वमेधो राजसूयस्तथेष्टः; पापस्यान्तं कर्मणो मा पुनर्गाः ॥५-२७-१५॥

(Having reached the end of actions, which is praised; truth, self-control, honesty, non-cruelty. The horse sacrifice, royal consecration, and desired; do not go again to the end of sinful action.)
Having achieved the ultimate goal of actions, which is praised as truth, self-control, honesty, and non-cruelty, the horse sacrifice and royal consecration are desired. Do not return to sinful actions.
तच्चेदेवं देशरूपेण पार्थाः; करिष्यध्वं कर्म पापं चिराय। निवसध्वं वर्षपूगान्वनेषु; दुःखं वासं पाण्डवा धर्महेतोः ॥५-२७-१६॥
