सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
आमन्त्रये त्वा नरदेवदेव; गच्छाम्यहं पाण्डव स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु। कच्चिन्न वाचा वृजिनं हि किं चि; दुच्चारितं मे मनसोऽभिषङ्गात् ॥५-३०-१॥
I address you, O lord of men and gods; I am leaving, O son of Pandu, may you be well. I hope that nothing sinful has been spoken by me due to any attachment of the mind.
जनार्दनं भीमसेनार्जुनौ च; माद्रीसुतौ सात्यकिं चेकितानम्। आमन्त्र्य गच्छामि शिवं सुखं वः; सौम्येन मां पश्यत चक्षुषा नृपाः ॥५-३०-२॥
O Janardana, Bhimasena, Arjuna, the sons of Madri, Satyaki, and Cekitana, I take my leave after addressing you. May you have auspicious happiness. O kings, look upon me with gentle eyes.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhishthira said:
अनुज्ञातः सञ्जय स्वस्ति गच्छ; न नोऽकार्षीरप्रियं जातु किञ्चित्। विद्मश्च त्वा ते च वयं च सर्वे; शुद्धात्मानं मध्यगतं सभास्थम् ॥५-३०-३॥
Sanjaya, you are permitted to leave with our blessings; never have you caused us any displeasure. We all recognize you as a pure-souled individual, central and present in the assembly.
आप्तो दूतः सञ्जय सुप्रियोऽसि; कल्याणवाक्षीलवान्दृष्टिमांश्च। न मुह्येस्त्वं सञ्जय जातु मत्या; न च क्रुध्येरुच्यमानोऽपि तथ्यम् ॥५-३०-४॥
You are a trusted and dear messenger, Sanjaya, known for your auspicious speech, virtue, and wisdom. Do not be confused by wisdom, nor become angry even when the truth is spoken.
न मर्मगां जातु वक्तासि रूक्षां; नोपस्तुतिं कटुकां नोत शुक्ताम्। धर्मारामामर्थवतीमहिंस्रा; मेतां वाचं तव जानामि सूत ॥५-३०-५॥
I recognize, O Sūta, that your speech is never harsh or piercing; it is always righteous, meaningful, and non-violent.
त्वमेव नः प्रियतमोऽसि दूत; इहागच्छेद्विदुरो वा द्वितीयः। अभीक्ष्णदृष्टोऽसि पुरा हि नस्त्वं; धनञ्जयस्यात्मसमः सखासि ॥५-३०-६॥
You are our dearest messenger; if Vidura comes here, he would be the second. You have been seen by us often before; you are a friend equal to Dhananjaya himself.
इतो गत्वा सञ्जय क्षिप्रमेव; उपातिष्ठेथा ब्राह्मणान्ये तदर्हाः। विशुद्धवीर्यांश्चरणोपपन्ना; न्कुले जातान्सर्वधर्मोपपन्नान् ॥५-३०-७॥
O Sanjaya, go from here quickly and approach the Brahmins who are worthy, possessing pure valor and conduct, born in noble families and endowed with all virtues.
स्वाध्यायिनो ब्राह्मणा भिक्षवश्च; तपस्विनो ये च नित्या वनेषु। अभिवाद्या वै मद्वचनेन वृद्धा; स्तथेतरेषां कुशलं वदेथाः ॥५-३०-८॥
Brahmins, monks, and ascetics who are always in the forests should be saluted by my words, and you should inquire about the welfare of others.
पुरोहितं धृतराष्ट्रस्य राज्ञ; आचार्याश्च ऋत्विजो ये च तस्य। तैश्च त्वं तात सहितैर्यथार्हं; सङ्गच्छेथाः कुशलेनैव सूत ॥५-३०-९॥
O charioteer, you should meet with the priest of King Dhritarashtra, the teachers, and the priests who are his, along with them, dear, as deserved, with well-being indeed.
आचार्य इष्टोऽनपगो विधेयो; वेदानीप्सन्ब्रह्मचर्यं चचार। योऽस्त्रं चतुष्पात्पुनरेव चक्रे; द्रोणः प्रसन्नोऽभिवाद्यो यथार्हम् ॥५-३०-१०॥
The beloved and unwavering teacher, who was obedient, desired the Vedas and practiced celibacy. He made the weapon fourfold again, and Drona was pleased and saluted as he deserved.
अधीतविद्यश्चरणोपपन्नो; योऽस्त्रं चतुष्पात्पुनरेव चक्रे। गन्धर्वपुत्रप्रतिमं तरस्विनं; तमश्वत्थामानं कुशलं स्म पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-११॥
Having acquired knowledge and good conduct, who again made the weapon fourfold, like the mighty son of a celestial being, inquire about the well-being of Aśvatthāmā.
शारद्वतस्यावसथं स्म गत्वा; महारथस्यास्त्रविदां वरस्य। त्वं मामभीक्ष्णं परिकीर्तयन्वै; कृपस्य पादौ सञ्जय पाणिना स्पृशेः ॥५-३०-१२॥
O Sañjaya, having gone to the abode of Śāradvata, the best among the great chariot-warriors and weapon-knowers, you should constantly praise me and touch the feet of Kṛpa with your hand.
यस्मिञ्शौर्यमानृशंस्यं तपश्च; प्रज्ञा शीलं श्रुतिसत्त्वे धृतिश्च। पादौ गृहीत्वा कुरुसत्तमस्य; भीष्मस्य मां तत्र निवेदयेथाः ॥५-३०-१३॥
Present me to Bhishma, the best of the Kurus, in whom valor, compassion, austerity, wisdom, character, knowledge, strength, and steadfastness are found, by grasping his feet there.
प्रज्ञाचक्षुर्यः प्रणेता कुरूणां; बहुश्रुतो वृद्धसेवी मनीषी। तस्मै राज्ञे स्थविरायाभिवाद्य; आचक्षीथाः सञ्जय मामरोगम् ॥५-३०-१४॥
O Sanjaya, convey to the wise and elderly king, the leader of the Kurus, who is well-learned and serves the elderly, that I am unharmed.
ज्येष्ठः पुत्रो धृतराष्ट्रस्य मन्दो; मूर्खः शठः सञ्जय पापशीलः। प्रशास्ता वै पृथिवी येन सर्वा; सुयोधनं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-१५॥
Sanjaya, the eldest son of Dhritarashtra, is foolish, wicked, and of sinful nature. He is the ruler by whom the entire earth is governed. Dear one, inquire about the welfare of Suyodhana.
भ्राता कनीयानपि तस्य मन्द; स्तथाशीलः सञ्जय सोऽपि शश्वत्। महेष्वासः शूरतमः कुरूणां; दुःशासनं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-१६॥
Sanjaya, though younger and slow, is of such character that he is always a great archer and the most heroic among the Kurus. Dear, ask about Duḥśāsana's welfare.
वृन्दारकं कविमर्थेष्वमूढं; महाप्रज्ञं सर्वधर्मोपपन्नम्। न तस्य युद्धं रोचते वै कदा चि; द्वैश्यापुत्रं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-१७॥
The prince, a wise poet in matters, endowed with great wisdom and virtues, is never pleased by war. Dear father, inquire about the welfare of the merchant's son.
निकर्तने देवने योऽद्वितीय; श्छन्नोपधः साधुदेवी मताक्षः। यो दुर्जयो देवितव्येन सङ्ख्ये; स चित्रसेनः कुशलं तात वाच्यः ॥५-३०-१८॥
In the act of cutting and in divine matters, the unparalleled one with hidden motives and wise eyes of the noble goddess. The invincible one in battle by divine means; he, Citrasena, should be conveyed your well-being, father.
यस्य कामो वर्तते नित्यमेव; नान्यः शमाद्भारतानामिति स्म। स बाह्लिकानामृषभो मनस्वी; पुरा यथा माभिवदेत्प्रसन्नः ॥५-३०-१९॥
The one whose desire is always indeed not other than the peace of the Bharatas, he is the wise bull of the Bahlika, who formerly would not speak unless pleased.
गुणैरनेकैः प्रवरैश्च युक्तो; विज्ञानवान्नैव च निष्ठुरो यः। स्नेहादमर्षं सहते सदैव; स सोमदत्तः पूजनीयो मतो मे ॥५-३०-२०॥
Somadatta, endowed with numerous excellent qualities, wise and gentle, who always bears impatience out of affection, is considered worthy of worship by me.
अर्हत्तमः कुरुषु सौमदत्तिः; स नो भ्राता सञ्जय मत्सखा च। महेष्वासो रथिनामुत्तमो यः; सहामात्यः कुशलं तस्य पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-२१॥
Saumadatti, the most venerable among the Kurus, is our brother and friend Sanjaya. He is a great archer and the best among charioteers. You should inquire about his welfare along with his ministers.
ये चैवान्ये कुरुमुख्या युवानः; पुत्राः पौत्रा भ्रातरश्चैव ये नः। यं यमेषां येन येनाभिगच्छे; रनामयं मद्वचनेन वाच्यः ॥५-३०-२२॥
The young chiefs of the Kuru dynasty, including our sons, grandsons, and brothers, should be instructed by my words to ensure that no harm comes to those they approach.
ये राजानः पाण्डवायोधनाय; समानीता धार्तराष्ट्रेण केचित्। वसातयः शाल्वकाः केकयाश्च; तथाम्बष्ठा ये त्रिगर्ताश्च मुख्याः ॥५-३०-२३॥
The kings gathered by Dhritarashtra to fight against the Pandavas included some Vasatis, Shalvas, Kekayas, and the chief Ambasthas and Trigartas.
प्राच्योदीच्या दाक्षिणात्याश्च शूरा; स्तथा प्रतीच्याः पार्वतीयाश्च सर्वे। अनृशंसाः शीलवृत्तोपपन्ना; स्तेषां सर्वेषां कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-२४॥
Dear, inquire about the welfare of all the heroes from the east, north, south, and also those from the west and mountainous regions, who are kind-hearted and endowed with good conduct.
हस्त्यारोहा रथिनः सादिनश्च; पदातयश्चार्यसङ्घा महान्तः। आख्याय मां कुशलिनं स्म तेषा; मनामयं परिपृच्छेः समग्रान् ॥५-३०-२५॥
The great elephant riders, charioteers, horsemen, and foot soldiers, along with noble assemblies, have informed me of their well-being. Indeed, you should inquire about the health of all of them.
तथा राज्ञो ह्यर्थयुक्तानमात्या; न्दौवारिकान्ये च सेनां नयन्ति। आयव्ययं ये गणयन्ति युक्ता; अर्थांश्च ये महतश्चिन्तयन्ति ॥५-३०-२६॥
Thus, the king's ministers, who are endowed with wealth, along with the gatekeepers and others, lead the army. Those who are engaged in calculating income and expenditure, and who consider significant matters, are involved in the administration.
गान्धारराजः शकुनिः पार्वतीयो; निकर्तने योऽद्वितीयोऽक्षदेवी। मानं कुर्वन्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सूत; मिथ्याबुद्धेः कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-२७॥
O charioteer, inquire about the well-being of the one with a misguided mind, as the King of Gandhara, Shakuni, the mountaineer, unmatched in the art of dice, honors Dhritarashtra's son, dear.
यः पाण्डवानेकरथेन वीरः; समुत्सहत्यप्रधृष्यान्विजेतुम्। यो मुह्यतां मोहयिताद्वितीयो; वैकर्तनं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-२८॥
The hero who, with just one chariot, dares to conquer the invincible Pāṇḍavas; and who, as the second bewilderer, confounds those who are already bewildered, ask dear Karna about his well-being.
स एव भक्तः स गुरुः स भृत्यः; स वै पिता स च माता सुहृच्च। अगाधबुद्धिर्विदुरो दीर्घदर्शी; स नो मन्त्री कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-२९॥
He alone is the devotee, the teacher, the servant; indeed, he is the father, mother, and friend. Vidura, with his profound intellect and far-sighted vision, is our minister. Dear, inquire about our well-being.
वृद्धाः स्त्रियो याश्च गुणोपपन्ना; या ज्ञायन्ते सञ्जय मातरस्ताः। ताभिः सर्वाभिः सहिताभिः समेत्य; स्त्रीभिर्वृद्धाभिरभिवादं वदेथाः ॥५-३०-३०॥
O Sanjaya, you should offer your respects to the elderly women who are known for their virtues and regarded as mothers, gathering together with all the women and elderly.
कच्चित्पुत्रा जीवपुत्राः सुसम्य; ग्वर्तन्ते वो वृत्तिमनृशंसरूपाम्। इति स्मोक्त्वा सञ्जय ब्रूहि पश्चा; दजातशत्रुः कुशली सपुत्रः ॥५-३०-३१॥
Sanjaya, after having spoken thus, tell me whether your sons, the living ones, are well and conduct themselves with compassion. Ajatashatru is well with his sons.
या नो भार्याः सञ्जय वेत्थ तत्र; तासां सर्वासां कुशलं तात पृच्छेः। सुसङ्गुप्ताः सुरभयोऽनवद्याः; कच्चिद्गृहानावसथाप्रमत्ताः ॥५-३०-३२॥
Sanjaya, you know who our wives are there; please inquire about the welfare of all of them, dear. Are they well-protected, fragrant, and faultless? Are they attentive to their homes and dwellings?
कच्चिद्वृत्तिं श्वशुरेषु भद्राः; कल्याणीं वर्तध्वमनृशंसरूपाम्। यथा च वः स्युः पतयोऽनुकूला; स्तथा वृत्तिमात्मनः स्थापयध्वम् ॥५-३०-३३॥
Ensure that you, noble ones, maintain auspicious and compassionate behavior towards your in-laws, so that your husbands remain favorable to you; thus, establish your own conduct accordingly.
या नः स्नुषाः सञ्जय वेत्थ तत्र; प्राप्ताः कुलेभ्यश्च गुणोपपन्नाः। प्रजावत्यो ब्रूहि समेत्य ताश्च; युधिष्ठिरो वोऽभ्यवदत्प्रसन्नः ॥५-३०-३४॥
Sanjaya, you know who our daughters-in-law are, those who have come from noble families and are endowed with virtues. Tell me about them, those who have children, after assembling them; Yudhishthira spoke to you with a pleased heart.
कन्याः स्वजेथाः सदनेषु सञ्जय; अनामयं मद्वचनेन पृष्ट्वा। कल्याणा वः सन्तु पतयोऽनुकूला; यूयं पतीनां भवतानुकूलाः ॥५-३०-३५॥
Daughters, you should live in the houses, Sanjaya. After inquiring about their well-being through my words, may your husbands be auspicious and favorable, and may you be favorable to your husbands.
अलङ्कृता वस्त्रवत्यः सुगन्धा; अबीभत्साः सुखिता भोगवत्यः। लघु यासां दर्शनं वाक्च लघ्वी; वेशस्त्रियः कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-३६॥
The courtesans, adorned and clothed, are fragrant and not repulsive. They are happy and enjoying pleasures. Their sight and speech are light. Father, you may ask about their welfare.
दासीपुत्रा ये च दासाः कुरूणां; तदाश्रया बहवः कुब्जखञ्जाः। आख्याय मां कुशलिनं स्म तेभ्यो; अनामयं परिपृच्छेर्जघन्यम् ॥५-३०-३७॥
The sons of maidservants and the servants of the Kurus, many of whom are dependent on them, are hunchbacked and lame. Having informed me, they should inquire about the well-being of the lowest among them, ensuring they are without illness.
कच्चिद्वृत्तिर्वर्तते वै पुराणी; कच्चिद्भोगान्धार्तराष्ट्रो ददाति। अङ्गहीनान्कृपणान्वामनांश्च; आनृशंस्याद्धृतराष्ट्रो बिभर्ति ॥५-३०-३८॥
Is the ancient conduct still maintained? Does Dhritarashtra's son provide pleasures? Dhritarashtra supports the disabled, the poor, and the dwarfs out of compassion.
अन्धाश्च सर्वे स्थविरास्तथैव; हस्ताजीवा बहवो येऽत्र सन्ति। आख्याय मां कुशलिनं स्म तेषा; मनामयं परिपृच्छेर्जघन्यम् ॥५-३०-३९॥
"All are blind and old, as well as many elephant keepers who are here. Having informed me that they are well, one should inquire about the well-being of the last one."
मा भैष्ट दुःखेन कुजीवितेन; नूनं कृतं परलोकेषु पापम्। निगृह्य शत्रून्सुहृदोऽनुगृह्य; वासोभिरन्नेन च वो भरिष्ये ॥५-३०-४०॥
Do not be afraid of the sorrow and miserable life; indeed, sins have been committed in other worlds. By subduing enemies and favoring friends, I will provide you with clothes and food.
सन्त्येव मे ब्राह्मणेभ्यः कृतानि; भावीन्यथो नो बत वर्तयन्ति। पश्याम्यहं युक्तरूपांस्तथैव; तामेव सिद्धिं श्रावयेथा नृपं तम् ॥५-३०-४१॥
Indeed, I have done deeds for the Brahmins, and they are for the future, but alas, they continue. I see appropriate forms just so; you should inform the king of that success.
ये चानाथा दुर्बलाः सर्वकाल; मात्मन्येव प्रयतन्तेऽथ मूढाः। तांश्चापि त्वं कृपणान्सर्वथैव; अस्मद्वाक्यात्कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥५-३०-४२॥
Those who are helpless and weak always strive only in themselves, then they are foolish. Dear, you should also inquire about the welfare of the miserable ones in every way, according to my words.
ये चाप्यन्ये संश्रिता धार्तराष्ट्रा; न्नानादिग्भ्योऽभ्यागताः सूतपुत्र। दृष्ट्वा तांश्चैवार्हतश्चापि सर्वा; न्सम्पृच्छेथाः कुशलं चाव्ययं च ॥५-३०-४३॥
O son of a charioteer, those who have aligned themselves with the sons of Dhritarashtra and have arrived from various directions, upon seeing them and the worthy ones, you should inquire about their welfare and their unchanging state.
एवं सर्वानागताभ्यागतांश्च; राज्ञो दूतान्सर्वदिग्भ्योऽभ्युपेतान्। पृष्ट्वा सर्वान्कुशलं तांश्च सूत; पश्चादहं कुशली तेषु वाच्यः ॥५-३०-४४॥
Thus, O charioteer, after inquiring about the welfare of all the king's messengers who have arrived from all directions, I should be informed about their well-being.
न हीदृशाः सन्त्यपरे पृथिव्यां; ये योधका धार्तराष्ट्रेण लब्धाः। धर्मस्तु नित्यो मम धर्म एव; महाबलः शत्रुनिबर्हणाय ॥५-३०-४५॥
There are no warriors like these on earth, who have been obtained by Dhritarashtra's son. However, my duty is eternal, and it is indeed my great strength for destroying enemies.
इदं पुनर्वचनं धार्तराष्ट्रं; सुयोधनं सञ्जय श्रावयेथाः। यस्ते शरीरे हृदयं दुनोति; कामः कुरूनसपत्नोऽनुशिष्याम् ॥५-३०-४६॥
Sanjaya, convey this message again to Dhritarashtra's son Suyodhana: The desire that pains your heart, I shall guide the Kurus to overcome without rivals.
न विद्यते युक्तिरेतस्य का चि; न्नैवंविधाः स्याम यथा प्रियं ते। ददस्व वा शक्रपुरं ममैव; युध्यस्व वा भारतमुख्य वीर ॥५-३०-४७॥
There is no strategy for this; we cannot be as you wish. Either give me Indra's city or fight, O chief hero of the Bharatas.
