kṣatratejā brahmacārī kaumārādapi pāṇḍavaḥ। tena saṃyugameṣyanti mandā vilapato mama ॥5-57-1॥
[क्षत्रतेजा (kṣatratejā) - with the brilliance of a warrior; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate; कौमारादपि (kaumārādapi) - even from childhood; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; तेन (tena) - by him; संयुगम् (saṃyugam) - battle; एष्यन्ति (eṣyanti) - will come; मन्दा (mandā) - foolish ones; विलपतः (vilapataḥ) - lamenting; मम (mama) - my;]
(The Pandava, with the brilliance of a warrior and celibate even from childhood, will come to battle by him, the foolish ones lamenting my.)
The Pandava, known for his warrior-like brilliance and celibacy from a young age, will engage in battle, leaving the foolish ones lamenting my fate.
दुर्योधन निवर्तस्व युद्धाद्भरतसत्तम। न हि युद्धं प्रशंसन्ति सर्वावस्थमरिंदम ॥५-५७-२॥
duryodhana nivartasva yuddhād bharatasattama। na hi yuddhaṃ praśaṃsanti sarvāvastham ariṃdama ॥5-57-2॥

(Duryodhana, turn back from battle, O best of the Bharatas. Indeed, they do not praise battle in all situations, O subduer of enemies.)
Duryodhana, retreat from the battle, O noble Bharata. Battles are not praised in every situation, O conqueror of foes.
अलमर्धं पृथिव्यास्ते सहामात्यस्य जीवितुम्। प्रयच्छ पाण्डुपुत्राणां यथोचितमरिंदम ॥५-५७-३॥
alam ardhaṃ pṛthivyās te sahāmātyasya jīvitum। prayaccha pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ yathocitam ariṃdama ॥5-57-3॥

एतद्धि कुरवः सर्वे मन्यन्ते धर्मसंहितम्। यत्त्वं प्रशान्तिमिच्छेथाः पाण्डुपुत्रैर्महात्मभिः ॥५-५७-४॥
etaddhi kuravaḥ sarve manyante dharmasaṃhitam। yattvaṃ praśāntimicchethāḥ pāṇḍuputrairmahātmabhiḥ ॥5-57-4॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मन्यन्ते (manyante) - consider; धर्मसंहितम् (dharmasaṃhitam) - righteousness-bound; यत् (yat) - that; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रशान्तिम् (praśāntim) - peace; इच्छेथाः (icchethāḥ) - desire; पाण्डुपुत्रैः (pāṇḍuputraiḥ) - by the sons of Pandu; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great souls;]
(Indeed, all the Kurus consider this as righteousness-bound. You desire peace with the great-souled sons of Pandu.)

अङ्गेमां समवेक्षस्व पुत्र स्वामेव वाहिनीम्। जात एव तव स्रावस्त्वं तु मोहान्न बुध्यसे ॥५-५७-५॥
aṅgemāṃ samavekṣasva putra svāmeva vāhinīm। jāta eva tava srāvastvaṃ tu mohānna budhyase ॥5-57-5॥

येषु सम्प्रतितिष्ठेयुः कुरवः पीडिताः परैः। ते युद्धं नाभिनन्दन्ति तत्तुभ्यं तात रोचताम् ॥५-५७-८॥

रथो वेदी स्रुवः खड्गो गदा स्रुक्कवचं सदः। चातुर्होत्रं च धुर्या मे शरा दर्भा हविर्यशः ॥५-५७-१३॥

(The chariot is the altar, the ladle is the sword, the mace is the armor, the assembly is the fourfold sacrifice, and the beasts of burden are my arrows, sacred grass, offering, and glory.)

(By self-sacrifice, O king, having worshipped Vaivasvata in battle, having conquered, we shall return ourselves with enemies slain, enveloped in glory.)

अहं हि पाण्डवान्हत्वा प्रशास्ता पृथिवीमिमाम्। मां वा हत्वा पाण्डुपुत्रा भोक्तारः पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥५-५७-१६॥

(I indeed, having killed the Pandavas, will be the ruler of this earth. Or, having killed me, the sons of Pandu will be the enjoyers of this earth.)
I will be the ruler of this earth if I kill the Pandavas. Alternatively, if they kill me, the sons of Pandu will enjoy this earth.
त्यक्तं मे जीवितं राजन्धनं राज्यं च पार्थिव। न जातु पाण्डवैः सार्धं वसेयमहमच्युत ॥५-५७-१७॥
tyaktaṁ me jīvitaṁ rājandhanaṁ rājyaṁ ca pārthiva। na jātu pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ vaseyamahamacyuta ॥5-57-17॥
[त्यक्तं (tyaktam) - abandoned; मे (me) - my; जीवितं (jīvitam) - life; राजन् (rājan) - O king; धनं (dhanam) - wealth; राज्यं (rājyam) - kingdom; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O prince; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pandavas; सार्धं (sārdham) - together; वसेयम् (vaseyam) - would I live; अहम् (aham) - I; अच्युत (acyuta) - O infallible one;]
(Abandoned are my life, wealth, and kingdom, O king, O prince. Never would I live together with the Pandavas, O infallible one.)

यावद्धि सूच्यास्तीक्ष्णाया विध्येदग्रेण मारिष। तावदप्यपरित्याज्यं भूमेर्नः पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥५-५७-१८॥
yāvaddhi sūcyāstīkṣṇāyā vidhyedagreṇa māriṣa। tāvadaparityājyaṃ bhūmernaḥ pāṇḍavānprati ॥5-57-18॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; हि (hi) - indeed; सूच्याः (sūcyāḥ) - of the needle; तीक्ष्णायाः (tīkṣṇāyāḥ) - sharp; विध्येत् (vidhyet) - pierces; अग्रेण (agreṇa) - with the tip; मारिष (māriṣa) - O honorable one; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; अपि (api) - also; अपरित्याज्यम् (aparityājyam) - not to be abandoned; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the land; नः (naḥ) - our; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pandavas; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(As long as the sharp needle pierces with its tip, O honorable one, so long also is it not to be abandoned, our land towards the Pandavas.)
O honorable one, just as a sharp needle pierces with its tip, we must not abandon our land to the Pandavas.

sarvānvastāta śocāmi tyakto duryodhano mayā। ye mandamanuyāsyadhvaṃ yāntaṃ vaivasvatakṣayam ॥5-57-19॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; वस्तात् (vastāt) - from the dwelling; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I lament; त्यक्तः (tyaktaḥ) - abandoned; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; मया (mayā) - by me; ये (ye) - who; मन्दम् (mandam) - slowly; अनुयास्यध्वम् (anuyāsyadhvam) - will follow; यान्तम् (yāntam) - going; वैवस्वतक्षयम् (vaivasvatakṣayam) - to the abode of Yama;]
(I lament all from the dwelling, Duryodhana, abandoned by me. Those who will slowly follow, going to the abode of Yama.)

रुरूणामिव यूथेषु व्याघ्राः प्रहरतां वराः। वरान्वरान्हनिष्यन्ति समेता युधि पाण्डवाः ॥५-५७-२०॥
Rurūṇām iva yūtheṣu vyāghrāḥ praharatāṃ varāḥ। varān varān haniṣyanti sametā yudhi pāṇḍavāḥ ॥5-57-20॥
[रुरूणाम् (rurūṇām) - of deer; इव (iva) - like; यूथेषु (yūtheṣu) - in herds; व्याघ्राः (vyāghrāḥ) - tigers; प्रहरतां (praharatāṃ) - of attackers; वराः (varāḥ) - best; वरान् (varān) - best ones; वरान् (varān) - best ones; हनिष्यन्ति (haniṣyanti) - will slay; समेता (sametā) - assembled; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas;]
(Like tigers among herds of deer, the best attackers, the assembled Pāṇḍavas will slay the best ones in battle.)
The Pāṇḍavas, assembled for battle, will slay the best warriors like tigers attacking herds of deer.
प्रतीपमिव मे भाति युयुधानेन भारती। व्यस्ता सीमन्तिनी त्रस्ता प्रमृष्टा दीर्घबाहुना ॥५-५७-२१॥

(Seeing the army burnt by Bhimasena, with chariots and elephants killed, like the movement of fire, you will remember my words.)
You will recall my words when you see the army scorched by Bhimasena, with its chariots and elephants destroyed, resembling the path of a fire.
महद्वो भयमागामि न चेच्छाम्यथ पाण्डवैः। गदया भीमसेनेन हताः शममुपैष्यथ ॥५-५७-२७॥
mahadvō bhayamāgāmi na cecchāmyatha pāṇḍavaiḥ। gadayā bhīmasenena hatāḥ śamamupaiṣyatha ॥5-57-27॥
[महत् (mahat) - great; वः (vaḥ) - your; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; आगामि (āgāmi) - approaching; न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; शाम्यथ (śāmyatha) - you cease; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pandavas; गदया (gadayā) - by the mace; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; हताः (hatāḥ) - killed; शमम् (śamam) - peace; उपैष्यथ (upaiṣyatha) - you will attain;]
(A great fear is approaching you if you do not cease by the Pandavas; killed by the mace of Bhimasena, you will attain peace.)
A great fear is coming your way if you do not make peace with the Pandavas. You will find peace only after being killed by Bhimasena's mace.
महावनमिव छिन्नं यदा द्रक्ष्यसि पातितम्। बलं कुरूणां सङ्ग्रामे तदा स्मर्तासि मे वचः ॥५-५७-२८॥
mahāvanam iva chinnaṃ yadā drakṣyasi pātitam। balaṃ kurūṇāṃ saṅgrāme tadā smartāsi me vacaḥ ॥5-57-28॥
[महावनम् (mahāvanam) - great forest; इव (iva) - like; छिन्नम् (chinnam) - cut down; यदा (yadā) - when; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; पातितम् (pātitam) - fallen; बलम् (balam) - the strength; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; तदा (tadā) - then; स्मर्तासि (smartāsi) - you will remember; मे (me) - my; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(When you will see the strength of the Kurus fallen like a great forest cut down in battle, then you will remember my words.)
When you witness the might of the Kuru warriors fallen in battle like a great forest that has been cut down, then you will recall my words.

एतावदुक्त्वा राजा तु स सर्वान्पृथिवीपतीन्। अनुभाष्य महाराज पुनः पप्रच्छ सञ्जयम् ॥५-५७-२९॥
etāvad uktvā rājā tu sa sarvān pṛthivīpatīn। anubhāṣya mahārāja punaḥ papraccha sañjayam ॥5-57-29॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; राजा (rājā) - the king; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पृथिवीपतीन् (pṛthivīpatīn) - the lords of the earth; अनुभाष्य (anubhāṣya) - addressing; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; सञ्जयम् (sañjayam) - Sanjaya;]
(Thus having spoken, the king, addressing all the lords of the earth, O great king, again asked Sanjaya.)
After speaking thus, the king addressed all the lords of the earth and then asked Sanjaya once more, O great king.
