sañjayasya vacaḥ śrutvā prajñācakṣur nareśvaraḥ। tataḥ saṅkhyātum ārebhe tadvaco guṇadoṣataḥ ॥5-59-1॥
[सञ्जयस्य (sañjayasya) - of Sanjaya; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रज्ञाचक्षुः (prajñācakṣuḥ) - the wise one; नरेश्वरः (nareśvaraḥ) - the lord of men; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सङ्ख्यातुम् (saṅkhyātum) - to count; आरेभे (ārebhe) - began; तद्वचः (tadvacaḥ) - those words; गुणदोषतः (guṇadoṣataḥ) - by merits and demerits;]
(Having heard the words of Sanjaya, the wise lord of men then began to count those words by merits and demerits.)
Upon hearing Sanjaya's words, the wise king began to evaluate them based on their merits and faults.
प्रसङ्ख्याय च सौक्ष्म्येण गुणदोषान्विचक्षणः। यथावन्मतितत्त्वेन जयकामः सुतान्प्रति ॥५-५९-२॥

(The wise lord of men, having accurately ascertained strength and weakness, then indeed began to assess the power.)

देवमानुषयोः शक्त्या तेजसा चैव पाण्डवान्। कुरूञ्शक्त्याल्पतरया दुर्योधनमथाब्रवीत् ॥५-५९-४॥

(By the power and brilliance of gods and men, indeed the Pandavas, and the Kauravas by lesser power, then Duryodhana spoke:)

दुर्योधनेयं चिन्ता मे शश्वन्नाप्युपशाम्यति। सत्यं ह्येतदहं मन्ये प्रत्यक्षं नानुमानतः ॥५-५९-५॥
duryodhaneyaṃ cintā me śaśvannāpyupaśāmyati। satyaṃ hyetadahaṃ manye pratyakṣaṃ nānumānataḥ ॥5-59-5॥
[दुर्योधने (duryodhane) - in Duryodhana; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; चिन्ता (cintā) - worry; मे (me) - my; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - constantly; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - even; उपशाम्यति (upaśāmyati) - subsides; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truly; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - think; प्रत्यक्षं (pratyakṣaṃ) - directly; न (na) - not; अनुमानतः (anumānataḥ) - by inference;]
(In Duryodhana, this worry of mine constantly does not even subside. Truly, I think this is directly, not by inference.)

आत्मजेषु परं स्नेहं सर्वभूतानि कुर्वते। प्रियाणि चैषां कुर्वन्ति यथाशक्ति हितानि च ॥५-५९-६॥
ātmajeṣu paraṃ snehaṃ sarvabhūtāni kurvate। priyāṇi caiṣāṃ kurvanti yathāśakti hitāni ca ॥5-59-6॥
[आत्मजेषु (ātmajeṣu) - in sons; परं (param) - supreme; स्नेहं (sneham) - affection; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; कुर्वते (kurvate) - do; प्रियाणि (priyāṇi) - dear things; च (ca) - and; एषां (eṣām) - for them; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - do; यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - to the best of their ability; हितानि (hitāni) - beneficial things; च (ca) - and;]
(In sons, all beings do supreme affection; they do dear and beneficial things for them to the best of their ability.)

(Thus indeed, we generally observe that good people desire abundantly to reciprocate a great favor.)

अग्निः साचिव्यकर्ता स्यात्खाण्डवे तत्कृतं स्मरन्। अर्जुनस्यातिभीमेऽस्मिन्कुरुपाण्डुसमागमे ॥५-५९-८॥
agniḥ sācivyakartā syāt khāṇḍave tat kṛtaṃ smaran। arjunasya atibhīme asmin kurupāṇḍusamāgame ॥5-59-8॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; साचिव्यकर्ता (sācivyakartā) - assistant; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; खाण्डवे (khāṇḍave) - in the Khandava; तत् (tat) - that; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; स्मरन् (smaran) - remembering; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; अतिभीमे (atibhīme) - very fearful; अस्मिन (asmin) - in this; कुरुपाण्डुसमागमे (kurupāṇḍusamāgame) - Kuru-Pandava meeting;]
(Agni may be the assistant in the Khandava, remembering that which was done, in this very fearful Kuru-Pandava meeting of Arjuna.)
Agni might serve as an assistant in the Khandava forest, recalling the deeds done during the intense meeting between the Kuru and Pandava factions, especially concerning Arjuna.
जातगृध्याभिपन्नाश्च पाण्डवानामनेकशः। धर्मादयो भविष्यन्ति समाहूता दिवौकसः ॥५-५९-९॥
jātagṛdhyābhipannāśca pāṇḍavānāmanekaśaḥ। dharmādayo bhaviṣyanti samāhūtā divaukasaḥ ॥5-59-9॥
[जात (jāta) - born; गृध्या (gṛdhyā) - greed; अभिपन्नाः (abhipannāḥ) - overcome; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - many; धर्मादयः (dharmādayaḥ) - Dharma and others; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; समाहूताः (samāhūtāḥ) - invited; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the gods;]
(Born of greed and overcome, many of the Pandavas, Dharma and others, will be invited by the gods.)
Due to their greed, many of the Pandavas, including Dharma, will be summoned by the gods.
भीष्मद्रोणकृपादीनां भयादशनिसंमितम्। रिरक्षिषन्तः संरम्भं गमिष्यन्तीति मे मतिः ॥५-५९-१०॥
bhīṣmadroṇakṛpādīnāṃ bhayādaśanisaṃmitam। rirakṣiṣantaḥ saṃrambhaṃ gamiṣyantīti me matiḥ ॥5-59-10॥
[भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; कृप (kṛpa) - Kripa; आदीनां (ādīnāṃ) - and others; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; अशनिसंमितम् (aśanisaṃmitam) - like a thunderbolt; रिरक्षिषन्तः (rirakṣiṣantaḥ) - desiring to protect; संरम्भम् (saṃrambham) - anger; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought;]
(From fear of Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others, like a thunderbolt, desiring to protect, they will go in anger, thus is my thought.)
My thought is that out of fear of Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others, they will act with the force of a thunderbolt, driven by anger to protect.
ते देवसहिताः पार्था न शक्याः प्रतिवीक्षितुम्। मानुषेण नरव्याघ्रा वीर्यवन्तोऽस्त्रपारगाः ॥५-५९-११॥
te devasahitāḥ pārthā na śakyāḥ prativīkṣitum। mānuṣeṇa naravyāghrā vīryavanto'strapāragāḥ ॥5-59-11॥
[ते (te) - they; देवसहिताः (devasahitāḥ) - with the gods; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - sons of Pṛthā; न (na) - not; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible; प्रतिवीक्षितुम् (prativīkṣitum) - to be defeated; मानुषेण (mānuṣeṇa) - by a human; नरव्याघ्राः (naravyāghrāḥ) - tiger among men; वीर्यवन्तः (vīryavantaḥ) - valiant; अस्त्रपारगाः (astrapāragāḥ) - adept in weapons;]
(They, the sons of Pṛthā, along with the gods, cannot be defeated by a human; tigers among men, valiant and adept in weapons.)
The sons of Pṛthā, accompanied by the gods, are invincible to any human; they are like tigers among men, possessing great valor and mastery in weaponry.
दुरासदं यस्य दिव्यं गाण्डीवं धनुरुत्तमम्। वारुणौ चाक्षयौ दिव्यौ शरपूर्णौ महेषुधी ॥५-५९-१२॥
durāsadaṃ yasya divyaṃ gāṇḍīvaṃ dhanuruttamam। vāruṇau cākṣayau divyau śarapūrṇau maheṣudhī ॥5-59-12॥
[दुरासदं (durāsadam) - formidable; यस्य (yasya) - whose; दिव्यं (divyam) - divine; गाण्डीवं (gāṇḍīvam) - Gandiva; धनुरुत्तमम् (dhanuruttamam) - the best bow; वारुणौ (vāruṇau) - Varuna's; चाक्षयौ (cākṣayau) - inexhaustible; दिव्यौ (divyau) - divine; शरपूर्णौ (śarapūrṇau) - filled with arrows; महेषुधी (maheṣudhī) - great quivers;]
(Formidable is he whose divine Gandiva is the best bow, and whose great quivers, Varuna's inexhaustible and divine, are filled with arrows.)

वानरश्च ध्वजो दिव्यो निःसङ्गो धूमवद्गतिः। रथश्च चतुरन्तायां यस्य नास्ति समस्त्विषा ॥५-५९-१३॥
vānaraśca dhvajo divyo niḥsaṅgo dhūmavadgatiḥ। rathaśca caturantāyāṃ yasya nāsti samastviṣā ॥5-59-13॥
[वानरः (vānaraḥ) - monkey; च (ca) - and; ध्वजः (dhvajaḥ) - flag; दिव्यः (divyaḥ) - divine; निःसङ्गः (niḥsaṅgaḥ) - unattached; धूमवत् (dhūmavat) - smoke-like; गतिः (gatiḥ) - movement; रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; च (ca) - and; चतुरन्तायाम् (caturantāyām) - in all directions; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; समः (samaḥ) - equal; त्विषा (tviṣā) - in splendor;]
(The monkey and the divine flag, unattached, with smoke-like movement; the chariot in all directions, in which there is none equal in splendor.)

महामेघनिभश्चापि निर्घोषः श्रूयते जनैः। महाशनिसमः शब्दः शात्रवाणां भयङ्करः ॥५-५९-१४॥
mahāmeghanibhaścaapi nirghoṣaḥ śrūyate janaiḥ। mahāśanisamaḥ śabdaḥ śātravāṇāṃ bhayaṅkaraḥ ॥5-59-14॥
[महामेघनिभः (mahāmeghanibhaḥ) - like a great cloud; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; निर्घोषः (nirghoṣaḥ) - sound; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; जनैः (janaiḥ) - by people; महाशनिसमः (mahāśanisamaḥ) - like a great thunder; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; शात्रवाणां (śātravāṇāṃ) - of enemies; भयङ्करः (bhayaṅkaraḥ) - frightening;]
(The sound like a great cloud is also heard by people; the sound like a great thunder is frightening to the enemies.)

यं चातिमानुषं वीर्ये कृत्स्नो लोको व्यवस्यति। देवानामपि जेतारं यं विदुः पार्थिवा रणे ॥५-५९-१५॥
yaṁ cātimānuṣaṁ vīrye kṛtsno loko vyavasyati। devānāmapi jetāraṁ yaṁ viduḥ pārthivā raṇe ॥5-59-15॥

(Whom the entire world considers superhuman in prowess; whom even the gods know as the conqueror, the kings in battle.)

शतानि पञ्च चैवेषूनुद्वपन्निव दृश्यते। निमेषान्तरमात्रेण मुञ्चन्दूरं च पातयन् ॥५-५९-१६॥
śatāni pañca caiveṣūnudvapanniva dṛśyate। nimeṣāntaramātreṇa muñcandūraṃ ca pātayan ॥5-59-16॥
[शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; पञ्च (pañca) - five; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; इषून् (iṣūn) - arrows; उद्वपन् (udvapan) - shooting; इव (iva) - as if; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; निमेष (nimeṣa) - blink; अन्तर (antara) - interval; मात्रेण (mātreṇa) - only; मुञ्चन् (muñcan) - releasing; दूरं (dūraṃ) - far; च (ca) - and; पातयन् (pātayan) - causing to fall;]
(Hundreds and five arrows indeed are seen as if being shot, releasing and causing to fall far within the interval of a blink.)

(Whom Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Ashwatthama, and indeed the king of Madra, also Shalya, and the neutral men said:)

युद्धायावस्थितं पार्थं पार्थिवैरतिमानुषैः। अशक्यं रथशार्दूलं पराजेतुमरिंदमम् ॥५-५९-१८॥
yuddhāyāvasthitaṃ pārthaṃ pārthivairatimānuṣaiḥ। aśakyaṃ rathaśārdūlaṃ parājetumariṃdamam ॥5-59-18॥
[युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; आवस्थितं (avasthitaṃ) - situated; पार्थं (pārthaṃ) - Arjuna; पार्थिवैः (pārthivaiḥ) - by kings; अतिमानुषैः (atimānuṣaiḥ) - superhuman; अशक्यं (aśakyaṃ) - impossible; रथशार्दूलं (rathaśārdūlaṃ) - tiger among charioteers; पराजेतुम् (parājetum) - to defeat; अरिंदमम् (ariṃdamam) - subduer of enemies;]
(Arjuna, situated for battle, by kings with superhuman abilities, is impossible to defeat, the tiger among charioteers, the subduer of enemies.)

क्षिपत्येकेन वेगेन पञ्च बाणशतानि यः। सदृशं बाहुवीर्येण कार्तवीर्यस्य पाण्डवम् ॥५-५९-१९॥
kṣipatyekena vegena pañca bāṇaśatāni yaḥ। sadṛśaṃ bāhuvīryeṇa kārtavīryasya pāṇḍavam ॥5-59-19॥
[क्षिपति (kṣipati) - throws; एकेन (ekena) - with one; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; पञ्च (pañca) - five; बाणशतानि (bāṇaśatāni) - hundreds of arrows; यः (yaḥ) - who; सदृशं (sadṛśam) - similar; बाहुवीर्येण (bāhuvīryeṇa) - in arm strength; कार्तवीर्यस्य (kārtavīryasya) - of Kārtavīrya; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava;]
(Who throws hundreds of arrows with one speed, similar in arm strength to Kārtavīrya, the Pāṇḍava.)

तमर्जुनं महेष्वासं महेन्द्रोपेन्द्ररक्षितम्। निघ्नन्तमिव पश्यामि विमर्देऽस्मिन्महामृधे ॥५-५९-२०॥
tamarjunaṃ maheṣvāsaṃ mahendropendrarakṣitam। nighnantamiva paśyāmi vimarde'sminmahāmṛdhe ॥5-59-20॥
[तम् (tam) - that; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; महेष्वासम् (maheṣvāsam) - great archer; महेन्द्र (mahendra) - Indra; उपेन्द्र (upendra) - Upendra; रक्षितम् (rakṣitam) - protected; निघ्नन्तम् (nighnantam) - slaying; इव (iva) - as if; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; विमर्दे (vimarde) - in the battle; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; महामृधे (mahāmṛdhe) - great war;]
(I see that Arjuna, the great archer, protected by Indra and Upendra, as if slaying in this great war.)

इत्येवं चिन्तयन्कृत्स्नमहोरात्राणि भारत। अनिद्रो निःसुखश्चास्मि कुरूणां शमचिन्तया ॥५-५९-२१॥
ityevaṃ cintayankṛtsnamahorātrāṇi bhārata। anidro niḥsukhaścāsmi kurūṇāṃ śamacintayā ॥5-59-21॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; कृत्स्न (kṛtsna) - entire; अहोरात्राणि (ahorātrāṇi) - days and nights; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; अनिद्रः (anidraḥ) - sleepless; निःसुखः (niḥsukhaḥ) - without happiness; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; शम (śama) - peace; चिन्तया (cintayā) - by thinking;]
(Thus, thinking in this way for entire days and nights, O Bharata, I am sleepless and without happiness, due to thinking about the peace of the Kurus.)
In this manner, O Bharata, I spent entire days and nights sleepless and joyless, pondering over the peace of the Kurus.
क्षयोदयोऽयं सुमहान्कुरूणां प्रत्युपस्थितः। अस्य चेत्कलहस्यान्तः शमादन्यो न विद्यते ॥५-५९-२२॥
kṣayodayo'yaṃ sumahānkurūṇāṃ pratyupasthitaḥ। asya cetkalahasyāntaḥ śamādanyo na vidyate ॥5-59-22॥

(The great decline and rise of the Kurus has arrived. If there is no end to this conflict by peace, there is no other way.)
A great change is upon the Kurus, marked by both decline and rise. If this conflict does not end in peace, there is no other solution.
शमो मे रोचते नित्यं पार्थैस्तात न विग्रहः। कुरुभ्यो हि सदा मन्ये पाण्डवाञ्शक्तिमत्तरान् ॥५-५९-२३॥
śamo me rocate nityaṃ pārthaistāta na vigrahaḥ। kurubhyo hi sadā manye pāṇḍavāñśaktimattarān ॥5-59-23॥
[शमः (śamaḥ) - peace; मे (me) - my; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; पार्थैः (pārthaiḥ) - by the sons of Pṛthā; तात (tāta) - dear; न (na) - not; विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; कुरुभ्यः (kurubhyaḥ) - than the Kauravas; हि (hi) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; मन्ये (manye) - I think; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; शक्तिमत्तरान् (śaktimattarān) - more powerful;]
(Peace always pleases me, dear, not conflict by the sons of Pṛthā. Indeed, I always think the Pāṇḍavas are more powerful than the Kauravas.)
